GOTTA DO IT Tire recycling event set for Aug. 14 and 15

MORRIS – The Grundy County Land Use Department will host a tire recycling event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 and 15 at the Olson’s Recycling center, 354 W. Jackson Street (West Route 6) in Seneca.

The Environmental and Resource Conservation Office of the Land Use Department will host this tire event through its partnership with Liberty Tire Recycling. The event is paid for through the Green Energy Funds received from the Grundy County EDP Renewable Wind Farm Top Crop.

Event rules are as follows: • No commercial, industrial or agricultural tires will be allowed.

• All tires must be off the rims or they will be declined.

• Only passenger truck and car tires will be allowed for recycling at this event. All other tires will be rejected.

• Be able to unload and assist in the loading of tires.

• Six tire limit per vehicle.

at 10 a.m., Forte Arts Center Rezin, Anthony to host children’s health, safety fair demonstration at 10:30 a.m. and MORRIS – Local families are invited to attend a free Children’s Health and Safety Fair on Aug. 15 with State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield.

The Children’s Health and Safety Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Saratoga School, 4040 N. Division St. in Morris.

The event will feature more than 40 state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations and businesses covering a wide range of educational, health and child care, recreational and community services for families and children. Special attractions include the popular Touch-A-Truck exhibit, featuring more than 20 trucks and a medical helicopter located in the parking lot.

Admission to the event is free with complimentary refreshments and a drawing for giveaways. Information will be available on topics such as cyber bullying, fire safety, bicycle safety, after-school programs, day care, nutrition, internet safety and volunteering opportunities.

• Ginger M. Gomer, 32, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a charge of driving under the influence. She was given an Aug. 24 court date.

• Kevin Marquez, 36, of Streator, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on charges of possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given an Aug. 31 court date.

CHANNAHON – A group of 5- to 9-year-olds gathered Tuesday morning on the freshly mowed lawn of Three Rivers Public Library District in Channahon to undergo, of all things, math exercises.

“You guys always say math is so boring, but then you don’t want to leave,” Carmen Bates, youth services assistant, said to the children as she explained an exercise that required the use of marshmallows.

In the second of four days at “Math Camp,” Channahon-area children are experiencing math outside in a fun environment, Bates said.

Because it’s different than sitting at a desk with a pencil, children don’t think of it as doing math, she said, which likely would be met with stiff opposition given that school isn’t in session.

Children were separated into groups for the initial exercise.

Two single-file lines formed, where each camper was armed with a marshmallow and a slingshot-like device they made out of a pencil and spoon, held together with a rubber band.

Another group held tape measures and was given the task of measuring the distance each marshmallow flew when launched off the spoon.

Not only was the exercise different than the typical math lesson, it turned into a friendly competition.

The top three participants recorded launch distances between 90 and 100 inches.

“With school around the corner, the goal is to have them thinking of math in a fun way,” Bates said.

Budget hearings continue, two remaining

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee finished five of its seven budget hearings Monday night and are set to hear the final two in the following weeks.

The hearings are scheduled so elected officials and department heads can present where their budgets are this year, as well as give a forecast to next year’s financial needs prior to the county creating its next fiscal plan.

“We are through five of our seven scheduled hearings with the Finance Committee and have been able to move through the process on schedule to this point. I appreciate

the effort from the department heads and elected officials to help bring all of the information together and make this process go smoothly,” Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said.

Board Vice Chairman David Nelson said he feels the hearings have gone well and he appreciates the information given by those presenting.

“Without exception, all of the elected officials and department heads have been responsive,” Nelson said. “I feel like we’ll be asking for further reductions at this point, though.”

Nelson said after hearing from the departments, he realized reductions are much harder for departments man-

dated by law to provide services at a cost to the county.

The board heard Monday from Judge Robert Marsaglia about expenses created during court cases that state law says the county must provide.

“In one case we’ve had $20,000 to $25,000 in attorney fees in a year-and-a-half,” Marsaglia said. “The county has to pay those fees. It seems to cycle every four years, and we are in the middle of one of those cycles.”

He said he tries to negotiate fees with attorneys on each case to provide cost savings for the county.

Other costs associated with the courts include national training, which is required for the county to continue hav-

ing specialty courts like drug court and mental health court.

The cost to the county to send the entire team is about $20,000, and the last time the whole team attended was 2013.

Marsaglia said initially the county was on an every-other-year schedule for the training, but they cut back and only sent a few people this year because of budget restraints.

The challenge is more than just unfunded mandates, according to Pryor.

Pryor said the county will see almost $2 million in lost revenue.

About $1.7 million of that comes from the loss of supplemental sales tax after the Regional Transportation Authority sued Morris and Chan-

nahon, as well as other municipalities in the state, for using taxing strategies enticing companies to open small purchasing offices in Grundy County to take advantage of low sales tax rates, also known as point of sale.

In addition to lost revenue, the matters of if, when and how much the county will be paid from the state also are issues.

“We still have uncertainty with respect to some funding coming out of the state, both in terms of grants and local funding,” Pryor said. “We are working as best we can to forecast these revenues today, and will be watching progress in Springfield closely as it effects our local budgeting process.”

6 Morris City Council approves budget

amendment for funds after audit

MORRIS – Morris City Council unanimously approved Monday night a budget amendment of four funds after an annual audit by CPA William Crawford.

Each fund went over the budgeted amount for the year, but in each case money was still available to cover the new cost, officials said in a Finance Committee meeting held before Monday’s City Council meeting. It is the last budget prepared by retired City Clerk John Enger.

The revenue and interest fund went over budget by $100 because of an unforeseen increase in service charge fees.

The police drug and forfeiture fund went over budget by $200 because of unexpected expenses incurred for the K-9 unit program.

The project became available after the budget’s startup fees of $12,666.43 were reim-

bursed by the Grundy County State’s Attorney Office. As a result, the total fund revenue was over-budgeted by $18,335.45.

The motel tax fund needs a budget amendment of $5,400 as it was over budget by $5,387.32 in expenses because of the unanticipated participation with the Morris Downtown Development Partnership in the lighting of Chapin Park in November 2014.

The airport development fund needed a budget amendment of $27,000, as it was over budget by $26,995.06 because of an unexpected engineering bill for the airport runway extension in the amount of $127,351 being received.

“For the most part, these are housekeeping items,” Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said.

In other business, the Morris City Council voted, 8-0, to approve the disclosure and waiver of potential conflict of interest of Scott M. Belt &

Associates PC, in relation to a request by MKM Oil Inc. for a preliminary and final plat approval in a minor subdivision at 150 Commercial Drive.

The plat approval also was approved.

The conflict of interest arose, Belt said, because his law firm is representing MKM Oil, Inc. in a matter unrelated to Morris government.

However, because of codes or statutes that govern law practice, Belt is required to disclose the legal representation. Belt’s firm has represented the city since the early 2000s, so the procedure has occurred before, Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

The purpose of the subdivision of the MKM Oil, Inc. property is to eliminate an unnecessary and unused easement on the property running under the gas station. The property is split into four lots with structures on two of them, but the gas station originally was built over the easement.

Key survey findings

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Human service agencies statewide are dipping into cash reserves and providing services to fewer people as they grapple with the state’s budget impasse, according to a new statewide survey conducted by United Way of Illinois.

Of the 400 human service agencies that responded to the survey, more than one-third said they have tapped into cash reserves to endure the government shutdown, according to a United Way news release. And of those, about 70 percent say they have three months or less of cash on hand.

A prolonged state impasse would lead to deepened cuts, said Karen Nall, executive director for United Way of Grundy County, which serves as a funding arm for many charities and nonprofits in the county.

“We haven’t seen any programs cut yet, but we are on the cusp,” Nall said. “It’s a shame; there are so many people who need services. Once these are gone, they will fall through the cracks. We’ll create a domino effect.”

Survey respondents represented a range of service categories, including youth development, early childhood education, mental health, emergency housing, senior services and employment training. Respondents varied in budget sizes, some with less than $500,000 to more than $15 million.

According to United Way of Illinois, agencies resorted to

planning commissioner

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The village’s newest Planning and Zoning commissioner was approved Monday by the Channahon Village Board.

Dennis Sullivan, an IT consultant with his own company, Sullivan IT Solutions Inc., was appointed by Village President Missey Schumacher and approved by the board, with trustees Sam Greco and Chantal Host absent.

Sullivan was named to replace Host, who recently left her position to serve on the Village Board.

“I think he’ll be a good addition to the Planning and Zoning Commission,” Schumacher said.

Sullivan thanked the board and said he was looking forward to becoming more involved in the community.

After the meeting, he said he was particularly interested in helping with the development of Channahon’s Town Center, which was completely stalled during the recession.

Sullivan stated on his application for the position he feels he will offer objective, unbiased opinions on issues raised on the commission.

Sullivan said he also has donated his time to create websites for area nonprofit or-

ganizations, including Shorewood Hugs, Madison C. Angus Foundation and the Chanooka Braves, and found the work rewarding. He also has coached baseball, softball and soccer.

Village trustees also took care of a few public works matters, including approving a one-year contract for traffic signal maintenance with Meade Inc., of McCook, at a rate of $200 a month for each signal. Channahon is responsible for the upkeep of three signal lights along Route 6 at Ridge Road, Yellow Pine Road and at the entrance to the Minooka Community High School South Campus. The village is partially reimbursed for the costs by other governmental entities.

Trustees also approved the purchase of a new crane to replace an old one that is out of service. The IMT 3203i crane will be purchased from Auto Truck Group of Bartlett for $10,866. Truck repairs in the amount of $18,700 to be performed by Kankakee Truck Equipment also were approved.

Director of Community Development Mike Petrick also gave the board an update on the aftermath of the hailstorm that hit the village in June. So far, he said, 494 roof permits have been issued by the village because of the storm.

By JOE MANDAK The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Elsie Hillman, a philanthropist and political activist who helped propel moderate Republicans to state and national offices, died Tuesday. She was 89.

Her death was confirmed by her husband of 70 years, billionaire industrialist Henry Hillman, and their four children.

Elsie Hillman is a former Republican National Committeewoman who used her political acumen and money to help President George H.W. Bush get elected in 1988 and congressman Tom Ridge get elected governor in 1994.

Hillman was also known to have advised or supported former Republican Govs. William Scranton and Dick Thornburgh, former U.S. Sens. John Heinz and Arlen Specter, and former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller.

“The death of Elsie Hillman marks the end of an era in American politics and our nation is the poorer for this loss,” Thornburgh said in a statement. “Elsie was a true patriot, devoted to the principles that made our political system work for all of our citizens.”

Her friendship with Bush began in the 1940s, when he was an oil entrepreneur with her brother, Toby Hilliard.

In a statement Tuesday, Bush called her “one of the brightest points of light and finest political activists” in the country.

“She seemed to know everyone,” Bush said. “And she had respect and admiration even from those with whom she did not always agree on issues.”

Hillman was known for her moderate views and support of abortion rights, as well as

for her unpretentious clothing and habit of always being late.

When she retired after 20 years as a GOP national committeewoman in 1996, Pennsylvania state Sen. Robert Jubelirer hailed her as “the heart and soul of the Pennsylvania Republican Party.”

Her support of moderates was credited with helping Republicans win statewide office despite a Democratic registration edge in the state.

Before helping Ridge win as governor, she supported Heinz, who was elected to the House in 1971 and the Senate in 1976 and was considered a

presidential hopeful before he died in a plane crash in 1991.

Over the years, her views put her at odds with more conservative Republicans.

In 2009, she publicly lamented her friend Specter’s switch to the Democratic Party but said it should come as no surprise – and she planned to vote for him in 2010.

“While I am a Republican and will most likely be one for the rest of my life, I have seen our party move further to the right, leaving little room for those of us in the middle,” she said in a statement. “In so doing the Republican Party runs the risk of becoming a minority party.”

Rob Gleason, chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, said Tuesday that Hillman “was an icon of Republican politics in Pennsylvania.”

Former Republican Gov. Tom Corbett said, “Elsie was a mentor to me and was someone I sought counsel and advice from throughout my career.”

Hillman chaired the Elsie G. Hillman Foundation, was a trustee of the Hillman Family Foundations and supported a wide variety of causes, including Pittsburgh’s public television station and its symphony orchestra, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Johanna Vogen and grew up there on his family’s farm.

He married Barbra Dickinson in 1972 in Iowa. In 1974, he received his PhD in Audiology from the University of Illinois at Carbondale.

He was predeceased by his parents, and 14 siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Barbra; daughters, Heather Bradley (Indiana) and Jeanne (Shahir) Rajabzadeh (California); 4 grandchildren and brother, Bill Vogen (Illinois.)

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at United Lutheran Church, 309 E. Jefferson St., Gardner, IL. Funeral service will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. with burial to immediately follow at Braceville Gardner Cemetery, Braceville, IL.

New Zealander and last WWII ‘Dambuster’ pilot dies at 96

By NICK PERRY The Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A New Zealander who was the last surviving pilot from the specialized World War II “Dambuster” mission targeting German infrastructure died Tuesday. Les Munro was 96.

The team of top pilots secretly trained in 1943 to master flying at high speeds, low altitudes and in the dark.

The British team was tasked with flying over Germany and dropping a specially designed bouncing bomb to destroy dams.

More than 50 of the 133 airmen died during the raid, but it was considered a success after two dams were destroyed.

The mission’s success flooded factories and killed more than 1,000 German citizens in the Ruhr valley, while also boosting morale back in Britain.

Munro himself was unable to complete the mission after his Lancaster bomber was hit by enemy fire and was forced to return to base.

The mission inspired a book and a 1955 movie, “The Dam Busters.”

For many parents, back to school time means back to packing lunch for the kids.

And that means it’s time to revisit that old lunchbox mainstay, the peanut butter sandwich.

The star ingredient tends to come one of two ways – heavily processed or ultra-natural. The more processed peanut butters generally are pumped up with added fats (as if peanuts don’t have enough), sugar and salt. Not a happy choice. Meanwhile, natural peanut butters may shed the added ingredients, but they often make up for it with gains in price. Ouch.

I’ve decided there is a better way. Homemade, do-ityourself peanut butter is not only healthier (you control what goes in it), it’s also way cheaper. And it’s a snap to make.

You start with the recipe’s only required ingredient: peanuts, raw or toasted. I prefer using toasted peanuts. You can buy them toasted or get raw and toast them at home in the oven.

Either way, you just pour the toasted peanuts into a processor or sturdy blender and let it rip until they’re ground.

The grinding involves two stages. First, the peanuts turn into a fine powder. If you keep going, they then turn into a smooth paste. Keep in mind that food processors and blenders tend to overheat if they’re forced to run for a long period. That’s why I prepare peanut butter in small batches, grinding only 1½ cups of nuts at a time.

I also like to add 1 tablespoon of a neutral oil. My preference is grapeseed, but sunflower or safflower also work. The oil makes it easier to grind the nuts, which keeps both the machine and the nut butter from becoming too hot.

If you like your peanut butter chunky, start this recipe by pulsing about 1⁄3 cup of additional nuts in the processor.

Once they’re nicely chopped, dump them out of the processor and set them aside. When the rest of the nuts have been ground to a paste, transfer to a bowl and stir in the chopped nuts.

Flavorings? You might add ¼ teaspoon of fine salt in the beginning. Other options are vanilla extract or paste, honey, cinnamon or whatever suits your fancy. Just hold off on adding these until you’re otherwise finished processing.

Once you have the consistency you want, then mix in any flavorings.

The beauty of this recipe? You don’t have to limit yourself to peanuts. Almonds and cashews work great, too.

And whichever nut you use, your homemade nut butter will keep in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to three months.

I’m pretty sure it’ll be eaten well before then.

2005 proved to be a special year in Morris VIEWS Rob Oesterle There was something in the air heading into the 2005 high school football season.

At Morris, Dan Darlington, who had been the coach since 1977, no longer was on the sideline. He was replaced by George Dergo, whose son John was a returning running back from the previous season.

John gained more than 2,000 yards and helped the Redskins to a second-place finish in that previous season’s Class 5A to Joliet Catholic Academy.

Morris had more than just the Dergos in its powder keg.

The Redskins were stacked with talent on the line, with Dane Zumbahlen and Jamie Cumbie at tight end – this was a time when Morris ran a two tight end set with Alex Perry at tackle. Zumbahlen went on to play at Illinois State, while Perry went to Indiana.

Cumbie, who dominated on defense like few since, became a full-time defensive end at Clemson.

I remember covering the season opener against Geneva when I was working for The Joliet Herald-News. Early in the game, John Dergo ran a sweep toward the Morris sideline. It looked like a nice 10 to 12-yard gain before he got run out of bounds. But Dergo suddenly shifted gears and turned on a dime, going for a touchdown that covered about 60 or so yards. I later told George Dergo that John looked like he had gained a step or two, and George just smiled.

This was the start of something special.

Morris rolled through the regular season, with Dergo picking up yards in chunks rarely seen outside of video games or movies. In the new Herald-News publication, GRIDIRON, he was a fixture on the Players of the Week page. The discussion was, “Okay, who’s a player of the week besides Dergo?”

To cut a long story short, Morris capped the regular season by beating Geneva (41-19), Yorkville (41-0), Lemont (42-7), Riverside-Brookfield (61-8),

Plainfield South (21-7), Minooka (42-7), Oswego East (61-0), Oswego (45-14) and Plainfield Central (49-34).

The Redskins were placed in Class 6A for the playoffs and gave Crete-Monee a 42-8 drubbing in the first round before beating Geneva 32-6 in a rematch from the season’s first week.

Once the playoff matchups were announced, all eyes were on a possible matchup between Morris and JCA. The football gods smiled on this and gave us that duel in the

quarterfinals. And, for the first time, JCA would have to come to Morris.

It was playing out like a Disney movie. The plucky underdog finally gets its chance against the big, bullyish team that ruled the roost and defeated the underdog at every turn.

But that year was different.

John Dergo wore No. 5, and the 5 on his chest looked a lot like an S. All he needed was a cape and he’d be Superman.

Maybe he was wearing one under his uniform that

night, a night in which people were climbing trees to get a better view of the game because there was no room to stand. Every inch of grass between the football field and the fieldhouse was occupied by spectators, and both sets of bleachers were full beyond capacity. It’s a wonder the visitors’ stands didn’t collapse.

JCA got the ball first and Morris held them at bay, getting the ball back at their own 19-yard line. On the Redskins’ first scrimmage, Dergo took a handoff

from quarterback Donovan Monahan and went off-tackle to the left. He got through the line, stutter-stepped to freeze a defender and took off down the sideline. He didn’t stop until he crossed the goal line 81 yards away.

The Hilltoppers didn’t flinch, even when Dergo scored twice on runs that each covered 67 yards. Monahan added a touchdown pass to Cumbie, and Morris held a 2821 lead late in the game.

JCA drove down the field as time dwindled and threw a pass to the end zone with about 20 seconds left. Dergo, who had already intercepted a pass in the end zone earlier in the game, stepped in front of this one, too. He ran out of bounds with his hands held high. Monahan took a knee to run off the closing second and then bedlam erupted.

The Morris fans stormed the field. Fans and players alike had tears in their eyes.

Morris had slain the dragon.

All Dergo did was run for more than 350 yards, score three touchdowns, kick all four extra points and prevent two touchdowns with interceptions in the end zone.

It was said that evening that Superman wears John Dergo pajamas.

But the ride wasn’t over.

The Redskins still had two games to play in order to be state champions. They went on to beat Crystal Lake South, 33-13, in the semifinals before topping Normal Community, 14-9, to finish the year – undefeated – as state champions in Class 6A.

Acho knows a small lead on OLB isn’t all he needs

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – In the race to Vic Fangio’s 3-4 outside linebacker spots, the most crowded field of contending starters on the team, Sam Acho was always going to enter with an edge.

First of all, he’s completely healthy, unlike Lamarr Houston and Willie Young, who still are working back from respective surgeries. More importantly, he has 3-4 experience, joining only Pernell McPhee on that front.

And it just so happens Acho is getting the first crack at outside linebacker with the first team through almost a week of training camp.

“He’s smart, he’s got good coverage ability, he’s played

the position at this level for some time,” Bears coach John Fox said was the reasoning.

Acho realizes the distinction only matters so much right now. Young and Houston are recovering, and the Bears so far have only had five practices and two live sessions in pads.

“Whether you’re going with the 1s, 2s, 3s, everybody’s got a battle that they’re fighting,” he said. “… I heard a coach say, ‘It’s one thing to be a starter. It’s another thing to be a productive starter.’ So at the end of the day, I’m trying to just master my craft.”

Besides, Acho has been a starter in the 3-4 already. He started 32 games in Arizona, although 26 of those came in his first two seasons before a broken fibula and ankle end-

ed his 2013 campaign after just three contests.

As much as training camp can look like experimentation, Acho said he feels it’s a time to clean up specific areas in one’s game that weren’t steady. For Acho, that could be adding a pass rush element, something he flashed prior to the injury before notching just one sack last season.

“He’s a beast, man,” fellow linebacker Christian Jones said. “He plays hard every down. He’s a physical guy.

That’s what we like to have on the edge, guys who can take on those blocks and be able to make plays on the edge.”

Acho said his top goal between now and the start of the season is to get better at stopping the plays he’s diag-

nosed in his head. He said his production will take off as a result and he’ll prove something, which is necessary for a first-year Bear on a one-year deal at less than $1 million. He might be a starter right now, but he said the entire future feels up in the air. So he quotes a verse from Hebrews: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and it’s the evidence of things not seen.”

He added, “There are things I hope for on the football field and off of it, but I can’t see it. But there’s gotta be something there, that substance there. So you’ve got to have a lot of faith to play the game of football, especially when you don’t know what the next play, let alone what the next year holds.”

The Mid-American Conference preseason media poll seemed like a set-up for a Rodney Dangerfield joke.

Despite winning the MAC West five consecutive seasons and the conference title three out of the past four years, Northern Illinois found itself predicted to finish third on its side of the MAC, behind Toledo and Western Michigan.

No respect at all.

With official practices set to begins hursday, the prediction caused an uproar for Huskies fans on social media. However, NIU coach Rod Carey, junior quarterback Drew Hare and senior cornerback Paris Logan said all the right things.

Sure, it provides a little extra motivation, but conference titles and bowl game berths aren’t made on preseason polls.

Besides, the fact that four media members predicted the Huskies to win the MAC West and somehow six picked them to win the MAC Championship game should show how much validity such polls have.

At MAC Media Day, Toledo coach Matt Campbell and Western Michigan coach PJ Fleck shared the same sentiment.

The road to the MAC Championship game still goes through NIU. “What Northern has done to sustain that at the top is really impressive,” Campbell said.

“Success helps breed success and one of the things they’ve been able to do is sustain the success and that culture.”

However, just because the Huskies have won the MAC West five straight seasons doesn’t make them a lock to win it a sixth consecutive time.

Last season, they had to fight and claw their way to several key conference wins and most likely, it will be more of the same in 2015.

There is no way to know how the heck this conference is going to sort out.

The Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Mavericks boys basketball players participated in their annual basketball camp recently under the guidance of coach Kirk Walker.

Walker guided the Mavericks to a berth in the IESA Class 8-2A state quarterfinals last season.

Symptoms of urinary tract infections change with age Dear Dr. K: I am a woman in my 80s. I went to my doctor because I suddenly developed back pain. It turned out to be a urinary tract infection that had spread to my kidneys. Why didn’t I have any other, earlier symptoms?

Dear Reader: If you had urinary tract infections (UTIs) when you were younger, you probably remember the burning, pain and intense urge to urinate frequently. But these symptoms don’t always appear in older adults.

UTIs commonly occur when bacteria from the rectum (such as E. coli) infect the skin around the opening of the urethra (the tube leading to the bladder). From there, the bacteria can work their way up to the bladder

A sharp drop in estrogen levels after menopause encourages bacteria to grow near the urethra. This increases the tendency of older women to get UTIs. UTIs may also occur when urine pools in the bladder.

This is more often a problem in older men than in older women. For example, an enlarged prostate gland can slow the outflow of urine and cause it to build up in the bladder.

In older women (and

men), pooling of urine in the bladder may be caused by problems with the aging of nerves that cause the bladder to empty.

Whatever the cause, pooling of urine in the bladder creates an ideal setting for bacteria to grow.

It’s not clear why an older person wouldn’t experience the same symptoms as someone younger. It may be because UTI symptoms are caused by the immune system’s fight against the infection. And the immune systems of older people may not fight as fiercely.

Another possibility is that conditions that affect the brain – such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and dementia – affect the brain’s ability to feel or describe

pain. And, just as aging nerves may make the bladder less efficient in passing urine, those nerves also may not feel pain as effectively as they once did.

UTIs produce subtle signs even when common symptoms don’t occur. For example, an older person may experience confusion or agitation, fatigue and loss of appetite.

Other signs may include cloudy and foul-smelling urine, abnormal urine color or blood in the urine. Back pain may be a sign that the infection has spread to the kidneys.

UTIs should be treated with antibiotics. Left untreated, a UTI may spread to the kidneys and then cause a potentially fatal infection in

the bloodstream.

To reduce your chances of developing another UTI, drink more fluids, which help wash away bacteria.

Also, empty your bladder as soon as you have an urge to do so. You should also empty your bladder after sex, to flush out bacteria.

If you have frequent UTIs, consider using a vaginal estrogen cream. The estrogen will help discourage the growth of bacteria near the urethra. A low dose of certain antibiotics, taken every day for several months, can also help prevent future UTIs.

2015 SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

Please take notice that on or after August 21, 2015, the Division of Aeronautics intends to enter an Order pursuant to Section 60 of the Illinois Aeronautics Act (620 ILCS 5/60) approving the application of the City of Morris for the Extension or Alteration to Morris Municipal Airport - Washburn Field. The airport is located near Morris, in part of the Southwest ¼ of Section 10, part of the West ½ of Section 15 and part of the Northwest ¼ of Section 22, all in Township 34 North, Range 7 East of the Third Principal Meridian, Grundy County, Illinois.

This airport was approved and a Certificate of Approval was issued to the City of Morris on July 27, 1956. On May 29, 1986, the Certificate of Approval for a Basic Utility 1 Public-use Airport was transferred to Irma J. Collins. On October 29, 1991, the Certificate of Approval was transferred back to the City of Morris.

Said extension or alteration will consist of lengthening Runway 18/36 & parallel taxiway on the north end by 500 feet to a total length of 5,500 feet.

Said Order shall provide for the issuance of a Certificate of Approval for a Public-use Airport, after sufficient completion thereof, as proposed by the application to meet all minimum requirements of the Division for the operation of an Airport, and in accordance with a final inspection; and, shall further provide for the nullification of said Order if the Order is not acted upon and a Certificate issued within 18 months from the effective date.

Said Order shall further provide that the Order and any Certificate of Approval issued pursuant thereto are not intended to and do not preempt, waive, suspend or modify any zoning regulations, building code requirements, or local ordinances adopted by any local governmental bodies having jurisdiction to control and impose land use restrictions.

All affected persons notified herein may, prior to the entry of said Order, file objections to (or comments on) the subject matter of said Order. After the entry of said Order such persons may enter written comments or request a hearing as to the validity or reasonableness of said Order within fifteen (15) days of the service date of the Order to: IDOT-Division of Aeronautics, Bureau of Aviation Safety, 1 Langhorne Bond Drive, Springfield, Illinois 62707-8415.
