MDDP also supports nonprofits MORRIS – When many think of the Morris Downtown Development Partnership, they think of the events we bring to downtown Morris.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy our downtown festivals, sporting events and holiday celebrations, and the MDDP has the opportunity to showcase our beautiful downtown.

What many may not realize is these events have another purpose. MDDP is able to support nonprofit organizations in our community, while giving these organizations the opportunity to raise funds and awareness.

Last week, Gus Macker-Morris gave $6,000 to various nonprofit organizations that assisted with our 2015 tournament.

Over the past 13 years, we have been pleased to donate more than $113,000 to numerous nonprofit organizations from Gus Macker-Morris proceeds.

This summer, the MDDP brought the new Liberty Arts Festival to downtown Morris. This event also provided opportunities to give back.

Annual 5K/10K in Morris raises money, awareness for ovarian cancer discovered how easily it could be treated.

“The symptoms can easily be overlooked as symptoms of getting older,” Trotter said.

“My mom, like myself, was unaware of the symptoms, and she said when she was diagnosed in November that she wished she would have gone to a doctor months earlier when she was noticing differences in her health.”

Trotter created this race to honor her mother, who was a Chicago marathon finisher just two years before her diagnosis, and to create awareness of this silent killer.

Money raised goes to help local women fighting ovarian cancer and for awareness campaigns.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Jamie Foster of Dwight was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer to years ago after a three-year break in her regular gynecologist visits.

Foster said if she had only been faithful in her healthcare, this cancer would have been found at an earlier stage.

“Now that I look back on my symptoms, I was writing them off as signs that I was getting older, not cancer symptoms,” Foster said.

Foster, who had surgery and chemotherapy for her cancer, is now back in treatment because of a spike in her blood counts.

“Women need to go every year to get their earliest possible detection,” Foster said.

On Saturday, more than 120 runners lined up at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers parking lot, ready to race down Gore and Saratoga roads at the Running for Life Ovarian Cancer Awareness 5K/10K. The race, now in its fifth year has had changes of venue and length as it grows, offering a variety to the runners.

“Morris has quite a few 5kK runs,” Corri Trotter, event founder said. “Last year we expanded by offering a 10K course, and a lot of people were using the same course

Morris Redskins cheerleaders brought spirit to the game by pumping up the crowd to cheer the football team to its 49-6 win over Chicago Austin Polytechnic in the season opener Friday night.

Standing along the track that circles the Morris Redskins football field, cheerleaders shout, flip and fly through the air to pump up the crowd to cheer on the football team battling it out on the field.

Cheerleaders always have been an important part of “Redskin pride” in Morris.

Morris YMCA continues to grow membership Learn more

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Less than a year after the Morris Community YMCA opened its first official location in Morris, the membership has exceeded expectations and new programs are being rolled out.

The organization has surpassed its initial membership goals and is climbing toward 800 unit memberships, accounting for almost 2,000 residents.

“We continue our climb toward 800 unit memberships, which doesn’t take into account the other programs we offer, which are attended by nonmembers,” Executive Director Missy Durkin said.

“We had over 500 kids playing in the Morris and Coal City youth basketball league last year.”

The Morris YMCA, 320 Wauponsee St. in Morris, just released its first fall program schedule, which highlights many of the new classes and events offered.

Ian Stewart, the health and wellness director, said he’s excited about the new lineup of classes available for residents.

One of his new programs, Jump Start Teen Fitness, focuses on tweens and teens, from ages 9 to 13, who want to learn about nutrition, healthy-eating habits and physical fitness.

“It’s important for these kids to get started,” Stewart said. “They learn by example.

The classes will meet at 6 p.m. Mondays. The YMCA is offering two sessions so all kids have a chance to participate.

In addition to the new teen fitness, Stewart said the organization is taking wellness across the spectrum of generations that utilize the facility by offering personal training both individually and in small groups.

It is holding a wellness certification class for ages 13 to 15 so teens can use the weight rooms in addition to the other areas of the center.

The YMCA isn’t just about fitness, according to Durkin.

It also offers programming for all ages.

Sarah Porzel, membership and program director, said new preschool classes are scheduled for 2 to 4 year olds that will help children learn about different topics, such as dinosaurs, underwater creatures and animals.

Tuesday nights also will offer three separate artist classes for children based on their age.

“Angela Robinson is an art teacher who will be teaching these classes for us,” Porzel said. “She is a local artist that has some fun ideas.”

There also is a new club

a technology class, for those 50 and older, called “Seniors Gone Wired,” which will cover topics from how to use a smartphone to learning about Skype.

Program Director Ken Iverson is bringing back the youth basketball league, as well as starting an adult volleyball league for those 14 and older.

MORRIS – Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan is running for re-election in 2016 to keep the office he has held for the last 18 years.

He was appointed by the Grundy County Board in 1998, and then was elected in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012, according to a news release from Callahan.

He began his career in law enforcement as a sheriff’s deputy in LaSalle County. He later attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science, which prepared him to take the chief deputy position in 1994 in the Grundy County Coroner’s Office. The coroner’s position was later left vacant and the county appointed Callahan, according to the news release.

Callahan has completed the National Boards of Medicolegal Death Investigation at the University of St. Louis School

of Medicine. He belongs to the National DMORT team which allowed Callahan to work in New York during the 9/11 attacks and also in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. Callahan sits on “Brian’s Law Committee” which reviews inmate’s deaths.

“I have a great passion for helping people and I love the investigation aspect of death investigation, which is a perfect fit for the Coroner’s Office,” he said in the news release. “I meet so many wonderful people, unfortunately often at the worst of times in their life. I can only hope that I have helped them with the answers regarding their loved one’s death.”

Callahan also participates in many drug and alcohol awareness programs and actively works with 4-H groups.

He also has been board president for the Grundy Community Hospice for 10 years.

Gus Macker donates most proceeds in four years

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Downtown Development Partnership donated the most proceeds from the Gus Macker Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament since 2011. On Tuesday, Gus Macker-Morris volunteers gathered to be recognized for their support of the tournament and were presented with checks to their organizations to thank them for their part in making this year’s tournament a success, MDDP Executive Director Julie Applegate said.

During the past 13 years, it has given more than $113,000 back to community organizations whose volunteers have assisted with the tournament, according to a news release from the MDDP. Because of the success of this year’s tournament, the MDDP was able to give an additional $1,000, which was spread among its volunteers.

“We try to do everything we can to save on expenses,” Applegate said.

“We just had to get our group of volunteers together to help with tear-down,” Peterson said.

Habitat for Humanity received a donation of $1,100. The proceeds will go toward the construction of the 12th Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity home for the Enger family. The home’s outer framing was just put up, Peterson said, so it has a long way to go. But the goal is to finish it by Christmas, as is always the goal with Habitat for Humanity homes.

“It’s great the MDDP gives local nonprofits this opportunity,” Peterson said.

1st black actor to play Valjean on Broadway dies

By MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Kyle Jean-Baptiste, the first black and youngest person to ever play the role of Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables” on Broadway has died after falling from a fire escape, according to a show spokesman.

He was 21.

Jean-Baptiste died Friday night following the show’s evening performance at the Imperial Theatre, said representative Marc Thibodeau, who called it a “tragic accident.”

“The entire ‘Les Misérables’ family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of Kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic – and history – in his Broadway debut. We send our deepest condolences to his family and ask that you respect their privacy in this unimaginably difficult time,” a statement from the production reads.

Author, neurologist Oliver Sacks dies at 82

By MALCOLM RITTER The Associated Press NEW YORK – There was the blind man who had the disastrous experience of regaining his sight. The surgeon who developed a sudden passion for music after being struck by lightning.

And most famously, the man who mistook his wife for a hat.

Those stories and many more, taking the reader to the distant ranges of human experience, came from the pen of Dr. Oliver Sacks.

Sacks, 82, died Sunday at his home in New York City, his assistant, Kate Edgar, said. In February, he had announced that he was terminally ill with a rare eye cancer that had spread to his liver.

As a practicing neurologist, Sacks looked at some of his patients with a writer’s eye and found publishing gold.

In his best-selling 1985 book, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat,” he described a man who really did mistake his wife’s face for his hat while

Sacks’ 1973 book, “Awakenings,” about hospital patients who’d spent decades in a kind of frozen state until Sacks tried a new treatment, led to a 1990 movie in which Sacks was portrayed by Robin Williams.

It was nominated for three Academy Awards.

Still another book, “An An-

thropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales,” published in 1995, described cases like a painter who lost color vision in a car accident but found new creative power in blackand-white, and a 50-year-old man who suddenly regained sight after nearly a lifetime of blindness.

The experience was a disaster; the man’s brain could not make sense of the visual world.

It perceived the human face as a shifting mass of meaningless colors and textures.

After a full and rich life as a blind person, he became “a very disabled and miserable partially sighted man,” Sacks recalled later. “When he went blind again, he was rather glad of it.”

Despite the drama and unusual stories, his books were not literary freak shows.

“Oliver Sacks humanizes illness ... he writes of body and mind, and from every one of his case studies there radiates a feeling of respect for the patient and for the illness,” Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, said in 2001.

Nabzdyk is in the middle of her third diagnosis and is awaiting her doctor’s plan of treatment next week.

MORRIS – If Morris had anything unexpected going into the season, it was probably its offensive line.

With the exception of returning starters Jackson Shannon and Michael Galifos, the Redskins were untested up front.

It didn’t take long, however, to show folks the offensive line need not be as big a concern Friday night as the Redskins rode a power running game to a 49-6 win over Chicago Austin.

The line produced holes for the backs to exploit, as well as took on linebackers and defensive backs so Morris could make big gains. In the first half alone, Morris accumulated 202 rushing yards and five touchdowns on only 16 running attempts.

On the Redskins’ first drive, the line sprang fullback Keagan Sobol for a 32-yard gain and, after a personal foul penalty for blocking after the whistle, Michael Feeney went through a big hole in the middle for a 41-yard touchdown.

The offensive line consists of sophomore Brennan Goff at left tackle, senior Will Ringer at left guard, sophomore Nolan Feeney at center, senior Galifos and right guard and Shannon at right tackle, along with senior Delaney Stutzki at tight end.

Morris’ efficiency continued through the game as Redskin runners routinely capitalized on gains of 10-plus yards, many before the opponents’ defense got close.

“We did a pretty good job of working together,” said senior co-captain Shannon, the starter at right tackle. “We jelled better, and we pretty much did what we wanted when we had the ball.

Return to field a welcome distraction for Coal City

The high school’s athletic director admitted that the Coalers’ game against ReedCuster carried symbolic significance to himself and others in the community because it was 67 days since an EF3 tornado ravaged Coal City.

“It’s just normalcy. Getting back to normalcy,” Hutchings said. “It’s just nice for our kids to get back in a routine, coaches get back in a routine.

We had a community come out here and support ’em. We had a great crowd tonight.”

Senior quarterback Nick Micetich said the team was excited for Friday, but not any more than it would be for a season opener. The pregame festivities, the buzz and the game itself, Micetich said, all had a feel typical of a season opener – which was welcome in a community where so little was normal the past several weeks.

For some Coaler players and fans, however, what happened after the game – and what happens after practice each day – remains atypical.

“You always say, ‘Let’s get back to normalcy,’ ” longtime football coach Lenny Onsen said. “And still these kids, some are displaced, things like that. But (when) they’re here, they get to be with their second family with us. We put

The performance of the football team itself was not adversely affected by the storm and its aftermath – the Coalers’ claimed a 47-0 victory over Reed-Custer. Micetich said while the tornado was something nobody wanted, the healing process helped produce a close-knit team.

“I think it’s brought us closer as a team, for sure,” Micetich said.

OPINION Illinois should keep students in state SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is experiencing a brain drain.

Just as adults are migrating to states with better business climates, so too are new high school graduates when they choose where to attend college.

In fact, in 2013, 40 percent of new Illinois high school graduates who chose to attend public four-year universities went out of state. And many never may return to live in the Land of Lincoln. Each time this happens, we should ask ourselves: How did we let down our next generation?

Look no further than Eastern Illinois University.

Enrollment at that school has dropped from 11,630 students in 2010 to 8,913 in 2014.

That’s a 23 percent drop in just four years. And the story doesn’t end there. Enrollments also are down markedly at Western Illinois University in Macomb and at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

And in Champaign-Urbana, the University of Illinois has seen interest from in-state students plummet.

As I noted last week, according to university data, in 2006, 58 percent of Illinois students offered admission to the U of I attended. In 2013, that number dropped to 45 percent. This problem has caught the attention of state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, a member of the House Higher Education Committee.

Often, once financial aid packages are factored in, it is less expensive for students to earn degrees elsewhere.

“The cost of doing business is high in Illinois,” Batinick said. “The cost of liability insurance has gone up 1,000 percent over the last 20 years for the U of I. The cost of workers’ compensation has gone way up significantly for our state universities. And kids work part time on college campuses, and

VIEWS Scott Reeder our minimum wage is higher than other states. All of these things make it more expensive for universities and businesses to operate in this state.”

And college in Illinois is expensive. For example, if you are an engineering student entering the U of I this fall, you can plan to spend $35,340 a year for tuition, room and board and other expenses.

That’s $141,360 for the degree – if you are able to graduate in four years. But Batinick said that tells only part of the story.

“There is a laundry list of mandates that are imposed on our universities that also make it more expensive for them,” he said.

And that, of course, jacks up tuition and means fewer dollars for financial aid.

And if you think Illinois universities are struggling to compete because the state doesn’t provide adequate funding for colleges, think again. Illinois ranks third in the nation for its state spending for each full-time university student, Batinick said.

Yep, he said, third.

And much of that money flowing to state universities is going to toward our state’s unsustainable pension system.

Our state is in desperate need of pension reform.

Until Illinois addresses fundamental businesses issues, this migration of students and workers will continue.

Last week, we looked at elimination and endplay by declarer. In those deals, the defenders could not avoid being trapped. Sometimes, though, they can defend effectively. There is one key point that must be borne in mind, which is highlighted in today’s layout.

South is in four spades. West cashes two heart tricks, then exits with a diamond. What happens after that?

So many inexperienced players bid the suit that they prefer at a minimum level regardless of point-count.

A minimum bid shows 0-8 points.

With 9-11, advancer must jump in his suit. (With 12 points or more, he cuebids the opener’s suit.)

Declarer mustn’t concede two club tricks. However, since only 13 highcard points are missing, surely the club finesse is losing.

After winning trick three, South draws trumps and cashes dummy’s diamonds. Now he leads a club. If East plays low, declarer covers with his eight.

This endplays West; he must either return a club away from the king or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

However, if East knows about defense against an elimination and endplay, he will play the club 10 at trick nine.

This gets West off the endplay and defeats the contract.

When declarer is trying for an endplay, it’s second hand high.

Toenail fungus has many remedies but hard to cure Dear Dr. K: I have a toenail fungus that just won’t go away. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Fungal toenail infections occur when a fungus infects the area under the surface of a toenail. Fungi love warm, damp environments, and the space inside our shoes provides the perfect habitat. As the infection takes hold, it creates a strong, unpleasant odor.

The toenail thickens and turns yellowish-brown. Eventually the nail may separate from the nail bed.

Fungal infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of, but there are things you can do to stop their spread and improve your toenail’s appearance.

First, visit a doctor to make sure your infection is,

A number of conditions, including age and psoriasis, can masquerade as fungal infections. If you are dealing with a fungal infection, you’ll have many treatments from which to choose:

OVER-THE-COUNTER (OTC) PRODUCTS. There are many

OTC antifungal preparations available in pharmacies.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that they work for toenail fungus (though they work for “athlete’s foot,” another fungal infection of the skin between the toes).

PRESCRIPTION TOPICAL

TREATMENTS. The FDA recent-

ly approved two new prescription antifungal products: efinaconazole (Jublia) and tavaborole (Kerydin). Both are applied daily, much like nail polish. It can take up to a year to see improvement.

ORAL MEDICATIONS. Newer medications, itraconazole (Sporanox) and terbinafine (Lamisil), are taken by mouth.

They work well. But they can harm the liver, so your doctor will need to perform blood tests periodically to check your liver function. Itraconazole also interacts with many other drugs, including statins.

So if your doctor prescribes this, ask if any of the medicines you might be taking could interact with it. (While doctors should check this in prescribing a new medicine,

the fact is, because of the pressures of time, we sometimes don’t.)

DEBRIDEMENT. In some cases, a doctor can scrape off the infected part of the nail.

LASER TREATMENT. One or two laser treatments will kill the fungus. But the infection often reappears.

SURGERY. Surgical removal of the nail will completely eliminate the infection. But your nail will not grow back afterward.

HOME REMEDIES. A study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found that applying Vicks VapoRub every day for 12 weeks eliminated the fungus in five of 18 people and reduced it in 10 others. I don’t know what prompted the doctors to do that study, but

I’ll bet they got the idea from patients who had tried it and found it successful.
