Emergency responders train for water rescues

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District has been involved in several water rescue and recoveries this year. Training for those emergencies is what allows them to be able to respond quickly.

“We go out every year to review the different procedures with the two boats we have,” Lt. Dave Wiechen said. “It’s important to remain sharp with these skills year-round.”

The firefighters spent one week in August taking the department’s boats down to the Illinois river where staff could go over the many procedures required when doing water rescues.

“Whether or not you have incidents, the training needs to be done,” Wiechen said.

“When you don’t have incidents, I’d say it’s even more important because you haven’t had to do it.”

“It helps me to learn about the river,” firefighter Dave Ritter said. “It allows us to know our area of the river.

Morris Hospital fills We Care’s Pantry MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – On Aug. 22, Morris Hospital donated $750 to help We Care obtain 6,617 lbs. of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

“We Care of Grundy County does a great job taking care of the needs of our community,” Mark Steadham, president & CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, said in a news release. “We are happy to partner with them on a number of initiatives including Fill the Pantry. It’s all part of our commitment to improving the health of area residents

A deserving day off for workers everywhere For the lucky ones, Monday is a day off. Maybe you’ll sleep in, fire up the grill and enjoy one last summer hurrah.

Monday is Labor Day, a day to celebrate the social and economic achievements of workers. Everyone who works deserves recognition for the contributions they bring to the economy. A day off that honors workers seems the least the country can do.

Granted, those who aren’t working – but looking for a job – deserve a day to be recognized, too. It hasn’t been easy for years for many of our residents.

The picture might be getting a little brighter: In July, the unemployment rate in Illinois stood at 6.8 percent – down from 9.2 percent a year ago, according to the Joint Economic Committee for the U.S. Congress.

In Grundy County, the unemployment rate for July was 7.2 percent – down from 8.1 percent in June, and from 11.4 percent in July 2013, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Statewide, private sector jobs in Illinois grew by 11,200 jobs in July. Since February 2010 (the national low point for private-sector employment), Illinois private-sector employers have added 260,400 jobs, according to the Illinois Economic Snapshot from the congressional Joint Economic Committee. There were 445,400 Illinois residents unemployed during July, down from a recent high of 753,500 in January 2010.

Still, there are 78,300 more people unemployed in Illinois than when the recession began, according to the Joint Economic Committee. The state’s unemployment rate lags behind the country’s, which was

6.2 percent in July, and other Midwest states.

And while private sector employment is growing, Illinois ranks near the bottom of the country in overall job creation since the Great Recession ended. The Associated Press reported July 18 that Illinois ranked 42nd in job creation, with 5.81 million jobs in June 2014, up 3 percent from 5.64 million in June 2009, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

There still is much that can be done to improve the working climate in Illinois – and we should be pressuring our lawmakers to take action.

The 67-percent “temporary” personal income tax increase and 46 percent corporate income tax rate passed in 2011 should be allowed to sunset as promised in January. Lower taxes could encourage business growth. There have been improvements in workers compensation – it was announced in July that the National Council on Compensation Insurance recommended a 5.5 percent cut in the rates for next year – but statewide, business leaders have said more needs to be done to create a more hospitable business environment.

And, of course, we’d like to see serious action that actually addresses the state’s ever-growing pension liability. Those who earned a pension deserve to know what they can count on, and all taxpayers deserve to know the state is committed to easing taxpayers’ burden.

Labor Day is the unofficial end to summer. It’s often also considered the kick off to earnest campaigning for the November elections. We encourage all our readers to educate themselves on where candidates stand when it comes to improving the state’s work environment.

Labor Day is a day to celebrate American workers and the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to our communities. In 1894, Labor Day was approved as a legal national holiday by Congress after many states had already established such a day of celebration, parades, and speeches on the labor movement.

This day was originally established to bring attention to workers’ rights, and to be a “workingman’s holiday”. Today, the holiday has evolved into both a tribute to the labor movement throughout the

Unfortunately, no one quite as witty as Yogi was around, so most of the comments were of the “You’ve got to be kidding me! Not again!” variety.

The skies threatened to open up midway through the sophomore game before finally clearing and allowing the varsity game to start, albeit a bit late at 8:30 p.m.

Morris took the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards in 6:25, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown run by sophomore Keagan Sobol. Minooka answered quickly, as sophomore quarterback John Carnagio connected with Jake Adams for a 42-yard gain. A facemask penalty on Morris gave the Indians 15 more yards and Nathan Gunn scored from 13 yard out. The kick was no good, and Morris maintained the slim, 7-6 lead.

Morris again controlled the clock on its ensuing drive, but was unable to come up with a score in the red zone, turning it over on downs on the first play of the second quarter.

Carnagio and Adams again combined to get the Indians out of the hole, as they connected for another long gain to the Morris 35. The Redskin defense held, taking over on its own seven, but Minooka forced a three-and-out. The punt gave Minooka the ball at the Morris 34, and Gunn scored on a three-yard run before taking in the two-point conversion to make it 14-7 with 5:57 to go in the first half.

Morris suffered another three-and-out deep in its own territory, and again Minooka took over in Redskin territory as Cameron Dirk returned a punt to the Morris 27. Gunn found the end zone for the third time, scoring from a yard out with 1:58 to play in the first half, and Minooka took a 21-7 lead.

At halftime, Seneca had tied the game at 7-7 when Zach Russell scored from two yards out on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak with 2:39 left in the third quarter. Seneca, after starting its first drive of the second half at Dwight’s 35, turned the ball over on downs, but allowing

the Irish to start at the Dwight 23 proved too much for the Dwight defense on the second series.

Seneca’s offense, which has only one returning starter, got off to a promising start when Casey Pifer broke off a 24-yard run on its first play. It was the only Irish first down of the first half. The Irish only totaled a net gain of 2 yards by halftime. None of their three offensive series in the first half began in Trojan territory.

before leaving due to injury early in the second quarter. It was with backup Michael Bennett under center, however, that the Trojans put together their scoring drive.

The game was Dwight’s first since leaving the Interstate Eight Conference, even if it was against a longtime former Interstate Eight rival in the Irish. Seneca is the only Interstate Eight opponent Dwight will face this season.

Seneca had owned a sixgame winning streak on the Trojans, who had last defeated the Irish, 34-28 in 2007, going into the game.

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent BRAIDWOOD – A 55-minute lightning delay forced fans into the Reed-Custer field house in the middle of the first quarter as the Coal City Coalers kicked off their season Friday night in Braidwood against the Comets.

Before the lightning slowed things down, it was Coal City making sparks fly in the early going. The Coalers forced a turnover on the first play from scrimmage, and five plays later senior runningback Jack Dibble scored to put the Coalers up 7-0.

Reed-Custer responded on the next drive when quarter-

back Mason Dransfeldt scored on a keeper from 65 yards out to tie the game.

Lightning forced both teams off the field with 6:14 left in the first quarter.

When play resumed, Coal City finished a 14-play 63-yard drive with a five-yard Brad Churnovic TD run that gave them a 13-7 lead.

Bears waive Jordan Lynch, cut 4 more to get roster down

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com The Bears waived running back and former Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch on Friday and reportedly gave Lynch no assurance of making the practice squad, which they can form starting Sunday.

The 10-man practice squad is Lynch’s best shot in the NFL, and the Bears likely don’t have to worry about another team claiming Lynch off waivers before then.

Lynch should pay attention to what happens with fellow undrafted rookie running back

Senorise Perry, who may make the 53-man roster, but if not, would also be a practice squad candidate. If the Bears signed Perry to the practice squad, they would be designating two spots for running backs if they also included Lynch.

Lynch played only seven snaps on offense in Thursday’s final preseason game against the Browns in Cleveland and had six carries for 18 yards, with a long of 8 yards.

The Bears gave Lynch significant special teams reps – 16 – in punt coverage and on the kickoff return team.

“I got a lot of reps on spe-

cial teams,” Lynch said after Thursday’s loss in Cleveland.

“It’s something new to me; that was the second time I got reps on special teams in the preseason. I thought I did well.”

In the preseason opener against the Eagles, Lynch had seven carries for 24 yards.

He did run for a first down on third-and-one against the Browns.

“I went out there every day, 100 percent in practice. Obviously my reps were limited in game time, but I thought I made the most of it every time I came out,” said Lynch, who did not respond to a text message seek-

ing comment Friday afternoon.

STAFF REPORTS GARDNER – The Gardner-South Wilmington volleyball team came out on top after a match that took three competitive games to decide the winner Thursday night, as the Panthers beat Wilmington, 2523, 17-25, 25-21.

Sophomore Marlana Ferrari led the offense with eight kills while senior Bryanna DeMoraes contributed six kills along with a team-high 13 digs. Julie Chambers tied the team high in digs, with 13, and Lexi Posing added five blocks, and Sophie Barna had 12 digs to help the Panthers to their second win of the season.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Seneca 25-27, Spring Valley Hall 19-25: The Irish won their season opener behind six kills each from Madison Wyss and Lexi Wilkinson. Jessi Clubb had a team-leading 16 digs to go with seven service points, including two aces, while Wilkinson had seven points and three blocks.

By MARK JENKINS Special To The Washington Post For Western audiences, Korean period dramas can require too much historical knowledge or rely too heavily on patriotic fervor.

Neither is a problem with “Kundo: Age of the Rampant,” a mid-19th-century escapade whose electric-guitar flourishes announce its irreverence. Director Yoon Jong-bin’s principal interests are rollicking combat scenes and rousing underdog triumphs.

The movie’s narrative backdrop is genuine. The late Joseon Era was known for corruption among the aristocracy, and poverty and hunger for nearly everyone else.

Bandit clans called “kundo” were common, and some of them had the Robin Hood-like ethic of the group celebrated in this tale.

The history lesson pretty

much stops there, however.

The movie owes less to real events and more to Chinese kung fu flicks – yes, there’s a battling monk – and Akira Kurosawa’s classic “Seven Samurai.” And the Ennio Morricone-derived score is just one echo of the spaghetti westerns that also inspired “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” a 2008 Korean romp.

Like that film, “Kundo” combines dynamic action sequences with swaggering humor. The earthy dialogue may seem a little forced in subtitled translation, but the well-choreographed bedlam is freewheeling. Some of it borders on slapstick, although the movie is too bloody to be termed a comedy.

The first half of the morethan-two-hour tale introduces a bewildering number of characters.

Ultimately, though, the movie becomes a grudge match between two men

who’ve been wronged in very different ways: baby-faced villain Jo Yoon (Kang Dong-won) and well-meaning roughneck Dochi (Ha Jung-woo).

Both suffer because of their origins. Jo Yoon is the son of a nobleman, but his mother was a courtesan. For a time, he’s the only male heir, so his father accepts him. When a rival is born, Jo Yoon is displaced. That’s when he starts plotting of the deaths of various relatives, including a pregnant woman.

Dochi is a butcher, a member of Korean society’s lowest caste. When Jo Yoon offers him a job as an assassin, it seems like a step up.

But Dochi balks at murdering a mother-to-be, so Jo Yoon sends thugs to punish him. He escapes, badly burned, and joins the kundo.

Where a samurai-style hero might brandish two swords, Dochi attacks with a cleaver

in each hand.

Dochi’s getaway is a turning point both for him and the movie.

In its second half, “Kundo” becomes robust and exhilarating. The filmmakers stage cast-of-dozens battle scenes and one-on-one showdowns with equal brio.

When it opened in Korea last month, “Kundo” set a box-office record, only to have it toppled seven days later by the equally bold and brutal “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” a 16th-century naval epic.

Both are fine examples of the energy that today’s Korean cinema is drawing from the past.

• “Kundo: Age of the Rampant” received two-anda-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains violence, torture, partial nudity and profanity. It is in Korean with subtitles and runs 137 minutes.

HARRIS J. ENERVOLD Harris J. Enervold, age 88, of Morris, passed away Friday morning, August

29, 2014, at Morris Hospital, with his loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steven Heilmann officiating. Interment will follow in Saratoga Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Morris Color Guard.

Born July 13, 1926, in Lisbon, he was the son of Bernard and Hazel(Johnson) Enervold. He received his education in the schools of Lisbon. Harris married Carol Severson in 1947 and they

lived most of their married life in Seneca and Morris. He was employed at Dunn Brothers Grain Elevator in Seneca, Lisbon Center and Romines Standard in Morris.

He was a W.W. II veteran and served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

Survivors include, two sons, Harion (Nancy) Enervold of Verona and Olaf Enervold of Morris; five grandchildren; one great grandson; one brother, Richard(Earlene)Enervold of Morris; three sisters, Joann of Pontiac, Mary (Ray) Donell of Dallas, Oregon and Barbara Jenkins of Morris; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Carol on August 12, 1998; and one son, Merritt on March 20, 2010.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he served on the board of trustees and he was a charter member of John Martin Steele Post 6049.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed model railroading, bowling and was a former boy scout leader.

ADVICE Engaged man shares money with mom Dad’s drinking drove Dear Abby: I’m a 22-year-old college student. My boyfriend of seven years and I are engaged.

Because we were high school sweethearts, we have watched each other grow into the people we are today. For the most part, I’m very proud of the person he has become.

When I quit my full-time job to continue my education, he stepped up to support me. I never asked for it, nor did I expect it from him.“Liam” is very frugal. (“Cheap” might be a better word.)

I never understood it because he makes enough money to support us both and put plenty into savings. However, I recently learned that every payday, his mother calls, and he goes to her house and gives her money. It wouldn’t bother me if she was ill, unemployed, etc., but she’s well-off and earns a

Dear Fiancee: You and Liam need to have a frank talk about money. There may be a reasonable explanation why he gives his mother money every payday.

(She may invest it for him.) But you’ll never know if you don’t ask.

While “Mama” may not have been overjoyed at the amount her son spent on your engagement ring, it appears she did approve his chipping in for your education, so she’s not what I’d call a miser.

That said, I cannot stress enough how important it is for you and Liam to be on the same page when it comes to finances and how decisions will be made after your marriage. Premarital counseling covers subjects like this.

Chronic subdural hematomas can heal slowly Dear Doctor K: My mother is in her 70s. She fell a few weeks ago but seemed fine. Then she started to have double vision and some trouble with balance. A CT scan revealed a subdural hematoma. Her doctor advised only bed rest and medication. Does this seem reasonable to you?

Dear Reader: A subdural hematoma (or hemorrhage) occurs when blood vessels near the surface of the brain burst. Blood collects beneath the dura mater.

That’s the outermost layer of the brain’s protective covering. (I’ve put an illustration of a subdural hematoma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Most subdural hemorrhages result from trauma to the head.

In some cases, blood accumulates rapidly after injury, putting pressure on the brain and causing symptoms within just a few days. This is an “acute” subdural hemorrhage. It can cause loss of consciousness, paralysis or even death. It usually requires emergency surgery to drain the hematoma and control bleeding.

Other times, as in your mother’s case, bleeding may develop over weeks or even months. If symptoms begin more than two weeks after the head trauma, it’s called a “chronic” subdural hematoma. The symptoms your mother experienced – double

Although subdural hematomas can occur at any age, they are most likely to occur in people your mother’s age. That may be because blood vessels are more fragile as people reach their 70s.

Sometimes, chronic subdural hematomas develop without any head trauma at all – or at least without any head trauma a person remembers. I once had a patient with a subdural hematoma who had no memory of any head trauma. Later, his wife remembered that he had banged his head walking into the edge of a partially opened door at night.

Some conditions can cause subdural hematomas that occur without any head trauma. Weakness in artery walls can cause them to start leaking blood. Certain types of cancer that spread to the brain’s protective covering also can cause bleeding.

Treatment is based on symptoms and the size of the hemato-

ma. A doctor can determine the amount of bleeding from a computed tomography (CT) scan or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

If your mother’s hematoma is small and has caused only minimal symptoms, then it’s reasonable for the doctor to recommend bed rest and medications. The medications should help control swelling and prevent seizures.

Symptoms should improve as her body gradually reabsorbs the blood. The doctor should carefully monitor your mother during treatment.

If your mother’s hemorrhage was larger or was causing more severe symptoms, a doctor would likely recommend surgery.

Most people who have a chronic subdural hemorrhage eventually get back to normal.

With any brain injury, however, symptoms can be slow to go away after treatment. And some symptoms may be permanent.

Hopefully, your mother will recover on her own, as her doctor thinks she will. If so, she will most likely not experience permanent symptoms.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and in love with a wonderful guy who is four years older than I. We are totally compatible and he confesses to love me more than any girl he has ever gone out with.

While working with teens who had severe psychological problems at Healthcare Medical Center in Southern California, I had the opportunity to observe the 12 questions being asked of teens who suspected a sibling or parent might have a serious drinking

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace problem. The following questions were asked: 1. Has the person stayed home from school or work more than once because of drinking?

2. Does the person drink to feel more confident or to build self-esteem?

3. Does the person drink alone?

4. Does the person drink to escape problems?

5. Does the person feel guilty after being drunk?

6. Does it bother the drinker if someone accuses him of drinking too much?

7. Does the drinker need alcohol when stressed?

8. Has the drinker lost friends because of his or her drinking?

9. Has the drinker ever been arrested for being under the influence?

10. Has the drinker ever been obnoxious and ruined a special occasion?

11. Does the drinker feel a sense of power or well-being when drinking?

12. Has the drinker ever felt the need to apologize for his behavior after drinking?

Each question that requires a yes answer is a warning signal of a problem in the making.

If the person answered yes to three or more questions, it was agreed that there’s a definite problem with alcohol and treatment was prescribed.

In this deal, South is in four spades. How should East defend after West leads the heart king?

West opened with a weak twobid, showing a good six-card suit and 5-10 high-card points. East applied the Law of Total Tricks.

(When your side does not have the high-card values for game, bid to the 10-trick level with 10 combined trumps.) He hoped to silence the opponents, but South had enough to overcall four spades. (Whenever the opponents pre-empt to four hearts, intervene with a bid of four spades with any reasonable excuse.)

East, when seeing two losing hearts in the dummy, should not thoughtlessly encourage with his seven. South will happily ruff West’s heart continuation, draw trumps and run the diamonds.

East knows that West has six hearts and, therefore, that South has only one. And dummy’s diamond suit is threatening.

East should actively overtake the heart king with his ace and shift to the club queen. Here, this works perfectly, resulting in four spades one down instead of one over.

share her passion of sewing with 4-H members. A few have went to state with their projects, and that makes her proud.

She feels many of the projects, like public speaking, are important for a child’s growth because it is something they will use throughout their life.

That doesn’t mean she doesn’t like to see the kids get down and dirty as they show cattle, sheep, and pigs down in the 4-H fair barns.

Her grandson, Perry Harlow, said he is amazed she continued with volunteering for 4-H after her children were out “many moons ago.”

“She is always looking to members with their projects or just talk to them about how their project is going,” Perry Harlow said. “I am very proud that my grandma didn’t stop helping the 4-H community.

Her age is just a number to her.

That doesn’t stop her from doing of what she loves.”

This year celebrated the 10year anniversary of the award, said Angie Barnard, director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation.

All but 10 inductees were in attendance for the ceremony held Aug. 9 on the director of Agriculture’s lawn on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

“These long-time volun-

teers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” Angie Barnard, director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation said in a news release. “They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Nominations for the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame are made by University of Illinois Extension staff. Each inductee received a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“The Grundy County Unit of University of Illinois Extension was pleased to nominate Rita Mills of Mazon, Illinois, for the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame,” Youth Educator John Davis said. “It was a pretty easy pick this year. We looked at her whole body of work with 4-H, and she’s been active for over 50 years.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes one 4-H volunteer per county for exemplary service to the Illinois 4-H program as a Hall of Fame winner.

“In 1942 or ’43, I joined 4-H in LaSalle county where I completed projects, but I’m not sure if any went to the fair,” Mills said. “In 1955, I had a leader who lived across the street from me so I put my daughter in, in Kendall County.”

When all of her children completed 4-H in Kendall County, Mills stopped participating for a while.

After her daughters, Charlene Morris and Doreen Harlow, moved to Grundy County and had children of their own, Mills found herself right back in the 4-H saddle.

“When my granddaughter joined Highland Ag at 10-yearsold, I really tried to be involved,” Mills said.

Her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Harlow, said it meant a lot to the four grandchildren to have grandma at the fair.

“Not only was she there for support but she acted as a resource for us and many other 4-Hers,” Harlow said. “Her breath and depth of knowledge helped us through the fair during judging time and even after the fair when we were preparing for the state fair or even brainstorming for next year.”

Lions Park gets new playground equipment Bench honoring local resident also part of the dedication

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Lions Club member Louie Eliakis loved watching the kids play in Lions Park on Michael Drive in Morris.

So when the Morris Lions Club had new playground equipment installed, they included a special bright yellow bench with “Lion Louie” etched in the back.

“He always cared for the kids and liked cleaning up the park in the spring,” Lions member Judy Miller said.

As his wife Georgia Eliakis, daughter-in-law Marcy Eliakis and grandson Kris Eliakis looked at the shiny new bench Thursday, Georgia wiped tears from her eyes.

“I miss him very much,” she said. “I remember all the years, 57 years, we used to have picnics in the park, without picnic tables.”

“I’m very proud they recognized him today,” Marcy Eliakis said. “He was a member of a fine organization.”

The memorials donated to the Lions raised the money for the bench that will help others remember Lion Louie.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick and representatives from the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce were on hand Thursday night to officially open the new playground equipment at the park.

The Morris Lions Club has been working all year to make improvements, starting with $3,990 for new roofs on the pavilion and washroom building.

The new playground equipment and benches cost $24,802, and installation costs were $9,775.

Morris resident wins Goose Lake photo competition

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris resident Gerald Diederich vividly remembers the morning he spotted a Scarlet Tanager perched on a tree branch near Holderman Road, because luckily, he had his camera.

The photo he took of the bright red tanager would go on to win top honors at this year’s Goose Lake Prairie photo contest, which had about 16 contestants and 84 entries.

“I’m pretty much into birds, and the photography was more of a sideline,” said Diederich, who entered eight photos in the contest and won four awards, including best in show.

This was the Morris resident’s first year entering the Goose Lake photo competition.

After competing in the Grundy County Corn Festival, Diederich was urged by friends and Goose Lake organizers to enter the contest.

a lot of ribbons,” said Susie Johnson, President of Goose Lake Prairie partners and organizer of the event.

This marked the eighth consecutive year for the Goose Lake photo contest which typically draws nature photo enthusiast from all over Illinois.

This year’s photo contest saw contestants from across the state, with about 10 different cities represented, including Northbrook, Kankakee and Lockport.

Judges from the Morris Camera Club reviewed the entries for a few hours before choosing the winners.

“They were all exceptional photos. The judges had a really tough time deciding this year,” Johnson said. “The judges did a really nice job for us.”

on display for two days last week at the Goose Lake Prairie visitors center, 5010 N. Jugtown Road off Pine Bluff Road in Morris, and attracted people who never had been to the natural area.

“We had two people who hadn’t come just to look at the

prints,” Johnson said. “That’s kind of what we’re looking for.

We want to bring people out who have never enjoyed the park before. And if you happen to bring your camera out to take pictures, then that’s a possible entry for next year’s photo show.”

MINOOKA – When Keenan Kuzma, 16, lived in Minooka, his guardian, Jane Kuzma sent him to Royal Family Kids Camp – less for the summertime activities and more for the eternal benefits this camp offers foster children.

“It gave the kids a week being surrounded by pure love, without worries,” said Jane Kuzma, who has sent her other foster children to the same camp. “They really do treat them like kings and queens. The staff really do care for them.”

Although the family now lives in Missouri, Keenan returned to Joliet this year as a volunteer, a way of saying “thank you” for great childhood memories, he said. His sister, Reanna Kuzma, 15, will do likewise next year, she said.

“I grew in leadership because so many people encouraged me,” Reanna said, adding that she takes an active role in her church because of those camp experiences.

Why would children in foster care need a special camp?

Because many of these campers have experienced unbelievable abuse and neglect, said Mark T. Fleming of Minooka, father of three children ages 9, 6 and 5 months. He is a former foster parent, current assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Will County School District 92 in Lockport and director for Royal Family Kids Camp No. 188.

“When you sit down with them, hear their stories ... you know there is evil in the world,” Fleming said.

This year – Fleming’s eighth camp – the Royal Family Kids Camp No. 188 had 55 kids, ages 7 to 11. Because these children are in foster care, their names, as well as the actual camp site, is private, Fleming said.

But the Royal Family Kids Camp is more than another Christian camp with the usual camp activities, although camp activities are an important part of the experience.

“We might have an 11-yearold camper that has taken care of three little siblings,” Fleming said, adding that many of these kids are the parent figures to younger brothers and sisters.

GAVC seniors Nick Harri, Clayton Labaj and C.J. Luttrell spend only one day a week in their CMT II class, working the rest of the week online from home or other off-site locations. the CMT class, and D.J. Layne does his homework whenever he has free time or in his free period.

Chris Cassidy took the class last year. He’s working on a computer or network security degree at college and works part time as the technology director at a special education cooperative.

“Typically, I was able to keep the discipline of getting the work done,” he said. “It was challenging, but rewarding. I was a little worried at the beginning about it being online, but I talked to another student who had taken it, and he said do everything that is assigned, read the chapters and keep up with the homework. ... I really buckled down and finished with an A.” Cassidy said he set aside his study hall time for the class, as well as spent some home time on it. It was nice to have the flexibility, he said, and it prepared him better for college, where he knew he would have to learn more independently than in high school.

“I think it taught me how to be really responsible with my time and deadlines and making sure I was keeping on top of things,” he said.

Dammann said the enrollment in the class has doubled since she began offering it online. To make it work, she records her lectures along with the same PowerPoint presentation she used to give to her in-class students.

“What they see online is exactly what they would see here,” she said.

Her students still have to come to class once a week before school where they work with real equipment.

Dammann said she has learned that parent/student/ teacher communication is even more important with the blended class, and when she sees a student start falling behind, he or she will have to start coming in to class every day until they catch up.

“When I see a pattern emerging,” she said, “I don’t let it go. It’s a difficult concept for them, and there is a lot of open communication between the students and the parents and me.”

Dammann also recommends her students don’t have a full high school schedule at the same time as the CMT II class. They need to have a free block sometime during their days, she said.

MORRIS – Leanne Dammann’s computer maintenance technology classes at the Grundy Area Vocational Center have been popular for years, with instruction in understanding computers, printers, cellphones, switches, routers and more.

But seniors trying to enroll in the second year of the series – CMT II – were having difficulty fitting the class into their schedules.

Advanced placement classes in particular interfered with scheduling, but other classes did, too, and many students who had an interest in technology found they couldn’t make room in their schedules for the class or had conflicts with the time slot.

So, three years ago, Dammann began thinking outside the box. “Blended” classes were becoming popular in schools across the country, with students spending some of their time in the actual classroom and the rest of their time at home, in the library or study hall learning the material online.

With permission from the participating high schools, Dammann experimented with a blended approach by allowing her CMT II students to not come to class for one week.

They still had assignments, and they still had to learn the material and prove to her they understood it. The trial run worked, and Dammann was able to start offering her CMT II course as a blended class beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

This year, she has 15 students in the class. They said so far they have managed to keep up by finding time during their daytime schedules to study.

MORRIS – Grundy County Senior Services has scheduled an informative meeting for 10 a.m.

Sept. 17 in the Grundy Administration Building entitled “What is Assisted Living.”

The Mobile Medical Center will again visit Grundy County from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at a location yet to be determined.

The Mobile Medical Unit will also offer flu shots beginning in October. Availability will be dependent on getting the vaccine at Hines in time.

The VA’s Vet Center will be at the GCVAC office, 1802 N. Division St., Suite 405 in Morris, from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. It is scheduled to continue visits on the first Thursday of each month.

To receive these services, veterans should bring their VA issued ID card or a copy of their discharge documents. The Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission can assist veterans with obtaining this information if they do not already have it.
