GEDC promotes Nikki Wills

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy Economic Development Council has promoted its longtime office manager, Nikki Wills, to business director.

“I’m most looking forward to working with our prospects, investors and community leaders,” Wills Nikki Willis said Thursday.

Wills has worked as the office manager since 2006. In her previous capacity she was instrumental in technology upgrades, managing office finances and media promotions, according to a news release from the GEDC. In her new role, she will support business development activities, implement the retention program and provide statistical analysis for GEDC clients.

Wills promotion follows the departure of GEDC Vice President Doug Pryor in June, who left to become the Grundy County Administrator.

“I am excited to announce Nikki’s promotion. She has worked very hard and been a valuable asset to the GEDC for the last nine years. Thanks to her previous experience, she will be able hit the ground running,” CEO Nancy Norton Ammer said in the release. “Nikki has established important relationships with business and community leaders and will do a great job in her new capacity as business director.”

Wills received her Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Lewis University. She and her husband Darin live in Coal City. Their two sons graduated from Coal City High School and are attending college.

“It makes the most sense to get back into the field now that my boys are both in college,” Wills said.

Wills said she feels it will be a natural transition and noted she’s learned a lot from her co-workers. She’s stayed in tune with everything at the GEDC. Norton Ammer said Thursday the office manager position will be filled with a part-time office assistant.

Man who caused police hunt in Morris arrested

By SHAW MEDIA MARSEILLES – The suspect who had Illinois State Police, Morris, Grundy County and other local officials looking for him most of Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Issac Joles.

Authorities differed on where the 41-year-old is from: The LaSalle County Jail has him from Lincoln, Issac Joles Nebraska, while the Illinois State Police said his last known address was Whitehall, Arkansas.

ISP officials were notified Wednesday by the U.S. Marshal’s Office of a man wanted

on a violation for previous weapons and first-degree murder charges in Arkansas, according to a news release from ISP. According to the U.S. Marshal’s Office, Joles was believed to be traveling through Illinois and local police agencies were notified.

ISP officers observed the suspect in Marseilles and conducted a traffic stop, taking Joles into custody without incident, according to the news release. Joles is being held at the LaSalle County Jail for processing and extradition to Arkansas. According to court documents, Joles pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and possession of

When the Morris woman walks into a store, she has the blue bag close at hand. When she is driving down the road, it’s next to her. It’s there to catch whatever her body rejects, whenever it decides to reject it.

Augie is living with achalasia, a disorder of the esophagus that makes it difficult to swallow solid or liquid foods.

It often causes vomiting.

“It’s really hard to see her in so much pain all the time,” her 16-year-old daughter Sam Watson said.

Sam and her twin brother, Craig, said at times the condition can be embarrassing, especially when they are out in public.

“I know she can’t help it.

She always gets sick when we go to Wal-Mart, and it feels like everyone’s looking at us sometimes,” Sam said.

For Augie, that’s one of the most difficult parts of the disease – never knowing where she will get sick. It could be in a store, the car, or a classroom at Saratoga School where she is an aide.

She worries about what others will think of her, or if it will bother those around her. To avoid embarrassment she no longer goes to friends’ homes for cookouts, or out to eat at the family’s favorite restaurants.

It’s been a complete lifestyle change for the entire family.

September is Achalasia Awareness Month, and Augie is on a mission to educate people about the disease. She has teamed up with Martin Mueller IV and the Martin Mueller IV Achalasia Awareness Foundation. The foundation provides support, education and information.

Augie Watson serves her family dinner – a meal she can’t eat – as she has achalasia, a disorder of the esophagus that makes it difficult to swallow solid or liquid foods. Her meal was a protein shake.

A family adjusting

The family has changed its eating habits, with Augie having a protein shake while the rest eat a meal. Other times, the temptation is too great and Augie has a few bites, unsure how her body will react.

“I’m getting more used to it,” Craig said. “Now if she grabs something she can’t have I take it from her. She’s going to be sick anyway.”

He said that tough love is his attempt at helping, although he knows the struggle is hard for his mother.

Although she first had symptoms of the disorder in 1995, doctor’s weren’t able to diagnose it until 10 years later.

Instead they treated her gallbladder, appendix and other ailments they thought it might be.

When she was tested and diagnosed at Loyola Medical Center, she had never heard of the disease that affects about 3,000 people a year in the Unit-

ed States.

“At first I could eat what I wanted to,” Augie said. “I was sick about one time a month. It wasn’t that bad.”

Then, with regular life stress came complications.

She had surgery where a balloon was used to stretch her esophagus, which was closing from the spasms caused by the disorder.

She said the initial surgery

worked well for about seven years before her life became stressful again. Her mother was diagnosed with cancer and died.

Soon Augie found herself driving to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to find out if there was anything that could be done for her.

“I had to do something.

By that time I had gone four weeks without keeping food

down, and limited fluids,” she said. “Mayo verified my diagnosis and said I was in the final stage of what can be done.”

She underwent another surgery for a portion of her esophagus that had closed off.

She was told the worst-case scenario was she could wake up with a feeding tube.

She said at the time she was scared, and told them she would rather be dead than have the tube.

“It was really scary,” Sam said. “I was nervous the whole time. She was scared about surgery, and when she’s scared, it’s scary.”

The surgery was successful in removing the closed portion of her esophagus, but she still has a “pouch” in her esophagus, which often holds food and fluid and keeps it from entering the stomach.

Sam said she would just like people to know that just because you can’t see it, her mother does have a disease.

She can’t help getting sick and there isn’t a cure.

“It’s hard for people to understand, I know,” she said.

“She’s trying her hardest to live a normal life.”

Commission talks self-storage

BY MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Planning Commission made positive recommendations Wednesday to the Morris City Council regarding a self-storage business on Wauponsee Street.

Michael and Thomas Kinzler, owners of 900 Wauponsee St., have been converting the property to a self-storage facility. Committee member Jim Jennings abstained from voting and discussion because he is in the self-storage business and wished to avoid a conflict of interest, Morris Building and Zoning officer Bill Cheshareck said Thursday.

There was a public hearing on a request by the Kinzlers for a zoning text amendment to the Morris Municipal Code to include indoor and outdoor storage facilities as a conditional permitted use within a

Business-3 commercial zoning district, Cheshareck said.

The 900 Wauponsee St. property is zoned B-3 and is the former Beatty Lumber Yard, north of the railroad tracks on the west side of Wauponsee Street.

There were three conditions recommended.

First, self-storage businesses within the B-3 district shall not have frontage on Route 47 or Route 6. City planner Mike Hoffman of Teska Associates Inc. wrote in a memo that self-storage facilities do not generate sales tax revenue like a restaurant or retail store, and as a result some prime locations should not be allowed.

At the same time, Hoffman wrote, storage businesses are a needed service in the community and do not generate significant traffic, although they produce property taxes that can benefit taxing bodies.

outdoor storage’ as listed in the request, we would recommended continuing to call such facilities by the self-storage category in the existing code,” Hoffman wrote.

Second, any outdoor storage must be screened from adjacent residentially zoned property consistent with standards noted in the zoning ordinance.

Third, any indoor or outdoor storage facility shall receive site plan approval as outlined in the zoning ordinance.

The commission recommended the amendment, and Cheshareck said two audience members were present. One, Roger West, purchased property and is interested in turning it into self-storage, as well.

Cheshareck said West was just gathering information, and no one was opposed in audience.

The recommendations will be discussed by the full council at the Sept. 8 Morris City Council meeting.

MINOOKA – With a new school year comes growth and new beginnings for Minooka School District 201.

Newly hired Superintendent Kris Monn held his first school board meeting Wednesday where he thanked everyone for the warm welcome and shared what he has been doing since he took office Aug. 1.

“I’ve been out of the office most of the time since the beginning meeting with principals, staff and teachers. I have

stopped by every building on the first day of school,” Monn said. “Kids were trying to comprehend what the superintendent does and it was interesting to hear the teachers explain. Some said I am the principal’s boss, some said head honcho.”

Monn plans to meet with staff and create reports on what the needs of the teachers, administrators and staff are. He said he wants to open dialogue with business owners and local government.

Continued from page 4 Most of the district’s 34 new teachers attended the meeting, and Monn said the hiring was needed because enrollment has increased by 180 this year.

Policy discussion

The first reading was held of the amended policy 7:40 that will allow nonpublic school children living in the district to participate in school extracurricular activities. It was decided to put into the language that children not attending public school could participate, but only in noncut sports, allowing sports with limited space to be reserved for the students who attend public school.

“What is the rationale for splitting the two? Both sets of parents pay taxes,” board member Doug Martin said.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but the committee came to the conclusion that we will never be apples to apples when comparing home-schooled children and public school children. We can’t monitor their behavior

and grades like we can of those children in school,” Monn said.

Martin asked if they could see how the policy works as it stands and have room to change, and Monn said it could and there will be basic ongoing policy management.

Some policy highlights are: • Any nonpublic student who chooses to participate in an extracurricular activity is subject to all policies, registration requirements, regulations and rules applicable to participants.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Stopping a vehicle for a seat belt violation is not always as harmless as one might think.

The driver may be wanted on a warrant and knows he or she could go to jail that night.

Or, as in a seat belt stop Grundy County Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Cory made last year, the driver could be fleeing the scene of an attempted murder, where he had stabbed and slashed the throat of an 86-year-old Michigan man, robbed him and stole his car.

For Cory’s actions, he received the Illinois Looking Beyond the Safety Belt Award at this month’s Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge luncheon in Tinley Park. Sheriff Kevin Callahan described Cory’s work as “outstanding.”

“He’s out there every day,” Callahan said. “He puts forth 100 percent effort every day, and I’m very proud of him.”

The award recognizes Illinois law enforcement officers who initiate a safety belt violation traffic stop that results in an arrest for other more serious crimes.

“This is another example of our exceptional traffic unit,” Callahan said. “The goal of [stopping seat belt violators] is not just getting people to comply with seat belt enforcement.

The crime took place June 1, 2014, in St. Joseph County, Michigan, when 28-year-old Joshua Webster – who had a record of forgery, larceny, malicious destruction of property, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, escape and flight, escape from a felony jail sentence and more – was walk-

According to a report issued by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Webster went to the home of 86-year-old Nelson Wooster to borrow his car so he could pick up his children. When Webster asked Wooster if he could borrow his car and some money, Wooster told him no.

three times and slit his throat with a knife.

As his victim lie bleeding, the report states Webster stole money, a credit card and his car and fled the residence.

When he told his friend what he did, the friend jumped out of the car and ran to the nearest house to call 911. Webster continued his getaway all the way to Grundy County.

Deputy Cory noticed Webster the next day driving along Route 47 around Stonewall Road, just north of Dwight.

The gold Cadillac turned into a driveway, then pulled back out again. Cory noticed he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and pulled him over. There was a strong odor of alcohol coming from the car.

A check of his identification showed the driver had a warrant for forgery and a probation violation, so Cory arrested him. There was no posting of Webster being wanted for attempted murder at that time, but after Cory ran the vehicle’s VIN number, dispatch advised him the vehicle was reported stolen and the occupant may be armed.

Then the message came through that Webster was wanted for assault with intent to murder and armed robbery.

Webster was taken to the Grundy County Jail and was eventually extradited back to Michigan, where he faces several charges.

By TIM REYNOLDS The Associated Press Darryl Dawkins, whose board-shattering dunks earned him the moniker “Chocolate Thunder” and helped pave the way for breakaway rims, has died. He was 58.

The Lehigh County, Pennsylvania coroner’s office said Dawkins died Thursday morning at a hospital. Later Thursday, Dawkins’ family said a heart attack was the cause of death. Officials said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

“Darryl touched the hearts and spirits of so many with his big smile and personality, ferocious dunks, but more than anything, his huge, loving heart,” his family said in a statement. “His family, wife Janice, children Dara, Tabitha, Nicholas and Alexis, along with countless family,

The lockdown lasted about 45 minutes and officers were at both schools.

After several hours of Morris police and Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies searching for Joles and his vehicle, his cellphone was then pinged in LaSalle County, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Wednesday.

Former Blackhawk, Ron “Chico” Maki, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS TORONTO – Ron “Chico” Maki, a member of the Blackhawks 1961 Stanley Cup champions, has died.

He was 76.

A notice on the Hawks’ website said Maki died Monday at his home in Port Dover, Ontario.

The right wing spent 15 seasons with the Hawks (1961-76), playing in three All-Star games.

Maki had 143 goals and 292 assists in 841 regular-season NHL games.

He had 17 goals and 53 points in 113 playoff games.

Maki’s late brother Wayne played two seasons with the Hawks and also played for St. Louis and Vancouver.

Chico Maki played junior hockey with St. Catharines and was the captain of a Memorial Cup-winning team.

A visitation will be Friday in Simcoe, Ontario, with a private family funeral on Saturday.

She signed with the Bandits via open tryouts in May 2014 and made her National Pro Fastpitch league debut in the circle against the Akron Racers on May 30, 2014.

She pitched the Bandits to her first win against the Pennsylvania Rebellion in a complete game outing on July 26, 2014.

She posted a 1-0 record with one save and 13 strikeouts in her first season with the Bandits.

The other day I needed to make a trip to the store. On my way in the front door, I noticed a man staring toward the sky.

He studied, thought, rubbed his hand across the stubble on his chin, and then marched into the retail giant.

When I reached the place he stood a few minutes earlier, I saw what captivated him.

A giant, tripod, deer stand hovered over me.

While strolling the aisles I saw him once again, this time he struggled with a massive flat cart. A box containing the tree stand weighed it down.

He looked happy, surely dreaming of future hunts from his new lofty perch. Opening day is fast approaching and now is the time to make sure that our stands are up and ready for the season.

If you are like me, you haven’t really thought about your deer stands as they guarded their position, silently, all summer long. Mother Nature can do a lot of damage to a tree stand and each of them needs to be checked with care before climbing up to them in the dark.

If you have a homemade, wooden, stand built into the loving arms of a giant oak or cottonwood, then a careful inspection is a must. Our area has endured countless storms over the past year and many days seeing high winds. Trees sway. This constant motion can loosen nails and screws and render even the most sturdy wooden creation unsafe.

I have seen very large lags sheared in half after a storm.

Rebuild and reinforce your wooden stands with care.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers If you have a manufactured stand the same attention to detail needs to be taken. Most of us fasten a lock-on stand to the tree with ratchet straps of some sort. While these straps provide secure fastening points, they do rot and break over time. One stand of mine even saw the straps chewed through by a squirrel.

As you start to climb up the ladder or climbing sticks, climb with care and feel to make sure everything is sturdy as you move upward.

Never assume everything is just as you left when the season ended in January.

It is also a great idea to

check your stands with a buddy. Besides the extra hands, if something does happen, you have the safety net of someone else who can assist you and possibly call for help.

In regards to your cellphone, when climbing trees, always make sure that phone is on your body somehow. A shirt pocket, pants pocket, whatever. Never leave the phone in a bag and hoist it up later. If you fall and cannot move, having the phone with you might just save your life.

Once your stand is checked and you feel it is safe, turn around and have a seat in it. Odds are there are several new branches and other obstructions in front of you.

Shooting lanes need to be reopened and now is the time to do it, not opening morning.

Hunting from an elevat-

ed stand is a unique aspect of deer hunting. It provides us with a view not normally available. The outdoors unfolds below our feet and we have the opportunity to watch the action as both a spectator and participant.

Enjoy the time preparing your stands. It is a great excuse to get outdoors and spend some time in the solitude. Yes, it may seem like a chore. It may may not always be the best of times battling the mosquitoes and trimming brush.

But it should be cherished as part of the ritual that leads to opening day. Be safe. Have fun. And may giant bucks walk beneath your stand this season. Good hunting.

I think on Aug. 19, a new and brief window of opportunity opened that finally could help wrap up this long and drawn-out state legislative overtime session.

But that window will only be open for 15 calendar days – the time the state constitution gives each legislative chamber to vote on a veto override.

I spoke with some Rauner folks last week and, man, are they ever on the warpath about the Senate’s Aug. 19 override of the governor’s veto of the AFSCME bill – the House has 15 days from that date to take its own action.

Even though AFSCME never has invoked its binding arbitration power with state corrections’ officers (who cannot strike by law), the governor and his people clearly see this bill as an outrageous intrusion on executive branch powers.

The governor has called the legislation the “worst bill in Illinois history.”

He has ginned up editorials all over the state, privately warned all Republicans that a vote to override guarantees a primary opponent next year, and made it clear to Democrats the best way to ensure a 2016 GOP opponent would be to vote “Yes” on this motion.

One Senate Democratic operative only half-jokingly said last week that the governor was “flipping out” about the bill.

The governor also was quite blunt the day of the Senate vote when he said this override was a “test” of Senate President John Cullerton: “Is he controlled by Speaker Madigan, or does he make his own decisions for the benefit of the people of his district in the Senate?”

After the Senate’s override, the Rauner folks were vowing revenge. Cullerton “walked his members out on a plank,” one said.

VIEWS Rich Miller a single House Republican vote to replace any of his own conservative “No” votes, said another, even though one Senate Republican, Sam McCann, voted with the Democrats to override last week.

It was clear to me that they were declaring all-out war.

So, why is any of this positive news? The governor obviously has established his top immediate priority, which is preventing the first and clearly most important veto override of his brief career.

You either can negotiate or bull through it and fight.

Right now, the Rauner folks are itching for a fight.

But Rauner has a way to stop the override if he can see beyond his anger and realize he’s in a trap of his own making: Cut a deal on his “Turnaround Agenda,” fix the budget, declare victory and bring the overtime session to a conclusion.

Tellingly, the House Democrats made some discreet behind-the-scenes inquiries last week about possibly setting up negotiations on the governor’s agenda, which he said must be completed before he’ll talk about the budget.

The point is that on Saturday, we arrive at what could be the single most important moment in this overtime session.

After the 15-day clock runs out, we could very well look back on this as either the beginning of a negotiated truce or the start of the harshest, meanest political war we’ve ever seen. Whatever happens, everybody has a choice here.

ANOTHER VIEW

Inspirational lesson in true heroism American tourists and friends Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler didn’t wake up one morning last week with thoughts of becoming heroes.

Heroism stems from circumstances, when average people arise to perform uncommon actions in the midst of adversity.

These Americans’ circumstances? They were aboard a high-speed train Aug. 21 from Amsterdam to Paris, along with Ayoub El-Khazzani, a 26-year-old Moroccan wielding an AK-47, a pistol and a blade.

The men had decisions of a lifetime to make. Do they cower in fear and face certain death, or do they resist at the risk of being killed in the aisles? In an instant, they, along with British businessman Chris Norman, rushed and tackled the gunman, ending an attack that could have turned into a massacre.

And, over the weekend, they received the Legion d’Honneur from France’s president Francois Hollande

at the Elysee Palace, congratulations from President Barack Obama and the smiling approval from millions worldwide.

Could we have been as brave or as selfless as these men, or those passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93, who sacrificed their lives to thwart a bigger 9/11 terrorist plot? It is difficult to say, but this much is certain: Vigilance matters, and seconds count.

Sadly, such life-threatening moments have occurred in movie theaters, malls, schools, hotels, office buildings, military bases, and even outside police headquarters.

No place where people congregate is 100 percent safe.

Still, every attack on innocent people is a rebuke of the canons of civil society.

The train attack leaves us wondering whether security at train stations should have been tighter, whether global intelligence agencies missed signs of a possible terrorist attack.

El-Khazzani, who had

been identified as a radical Islamist, reportedly traveled recently to Syria to acquire weapons, yet managed to board a heavily traveled train with enough weaponry and ammunition to kill hundreds.

And he may have, had it not been for the quick actions of a National Guardsman, an Air Force serviceman, and a college student, all sharing a vacation in Europe.

Now the trio is globally celebrated, although Sadler said they were only responding to a crisis. “The gunman would have been successful if my friend Spencer had not gotten up,” he said. “I want that lesson to be learned. In times of terror like that … please do something. Don’t just stand by and watch.”

Society needs more true heroes, people like Skarlatos, Sadler and Stone, who displayed deeply rooted character and selflessness.

This time, the good guys won, and the world owes a debt to their courage.

This week, though, we have seen that at the bridge table, declarer can sometimes secure his contract with the noble assistance of an opponent.

In this example, South is in four spades. West leads the club queen.

How should South play?

Some players with the North hand would respond four spades, bidding to the 10-trick level with a 10-card fit.

But that does not necessarily apply in an uncontested auction. Here, with a balanced hand, North should rein in a notch or two. Advocates of the Losing Trick Count would respond with a game-invitational three spades, but it is a close decision.

When North settles for two spades, South shoots for game. Opposite three spades, South might dabble his toe in the slam water with a four-heart control-bid (cue-bid), which, here, North would reject.

South has one club loser, so must restrict his diamond losers to two.

Declarer should win the first trick with dummy’s club ace, draw trumps, cash his heart winners, and cast adrift with a club.

Whoever wins this trick must either open up diamonds or concede a ruff-and-sluff. In each case, South loses only two diamond tricks and makes his contract.

Finally, if South must play on diamonds himself, he should start with dummy’s jack, hoping that East fails to cover an honor with an honor (or has the ace and king).
