WILLIAM W. MCCLINTOCK, SR. Born: Dec. 15, 1929; in Joliet, Died: Aug. 25, 2014; in Hinsdale William W. McClintock, Sr., age 84, of Minooka, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014, at RML Specialty Hospital, Hinsdale, with his loving family at his side.

Born December 15, 1929, in Joliet, he was the son of Ernest and Elsie (nee McCloud) McClintock, and was raised on the family farm in Troy Township known as McClintock Acres. He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1951 to 1956. Bill worked his entire life as a carpenter, first for 31 years for U. S. Steel on Collins Street in Joliet, and then for seven years at Collins Street Correctional Center.

He was a die hard Cubs fan and an avid sports enthusiast and gardener.

He loved watching all of his grand-

children’s activities and enjoyed fishing and golfing trips with his sons and grandsons. He will be remembered for his handy work remodeling many homes in the Minooka and Channahon area.

Bill was a member of Channahon United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir for 75 years.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Donna (nee Chiovatero) McClintock; his children, Cathy (late Jerry) Glover of Minooka, Julie (Scott) Hellem of Evansville, MN, William W. (Diane) McClintock, Jr. of Braidwood, Lori (John) McClintock of Alexandria, MN, Roseanne (Mark) Matteson of Coal City, Patty (John) Gretz of South Wilmington, and Mark (Liza) McClintock of Clearwater, MN; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, William (Rita) Chiovatero of Minooka; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; Mary and Phil Pittman and children, who were like family; and Bill and Donna’s lifelong best friends, Chy and the late Art Johnson.

Preceded by his parents; one son, Jimmy McClintock (1968), one brother, Oliver (Donna) McClintock;

one sister, Wilma (Jack) Schultz; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Grace) Chiovatero.

The family wishes to thank the physicians and nursing staff of Morris Hospital ICU and RML Specialty Hospital for the care and compassion.

Electronic recycling event planned MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County Environmental and Resource Conservation Office has scheduled an E-Waste/White Goods Collection for Sept. 12 and 13.

The event is for businesses and residents and will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Environtech Landfill in Morris, 1800 N. Ashley Road. Volunteers will be on hand to assist all of the residents with transferring all electronics from the resident’s vehicles, according to a news

release from the county.

The drop off for businesses/ residents is Sept. 12 and residents-only will be Sept. 13. You need not be a Grundy County resident to participate in the event.

MORRIS – For the past two seasons, Morris cross country runner Jacob Wantland has had hip surgery. This year, his senior year, he has a clean bill of health.

It showed Wednesday at the Morris Early Bird Invitational, as Wantland finished fourth overall to lead the Redskins in the 11-team meet.

“It was good to get out on the course,” Wantland said.

“The last two years, I have had hip surgery. I knew I took good care of myself,. and I had a good summer coming into my senior year.

“Coach Babson and my teammates have really helped me work hard this summer, and I don’t give my hips a second thought when I am out there running. It’s nice to get out there running, especially on our home course where we are all comfortable. I love running on this course.”

Not only did Wantland give the Redskins their best time, but he also gives them some inspiration every day, said coach Joe Blumberg.

“These kids watch Jake and see how hard he works,” Blumberg said. “He has run more than 300 miles in 10 weeks over the summer. It’s no secret how to get better in distance running. The more you run, the more you can run.

“Hopefully, these other guys on the team see Jake working hard and take from his lead. They have been doing a good job so far. We had a few guys that we kept out today for precautionary reasons. We would rather them be healthy later in the season and help us out than go out and try to run injured during the early going.

Plus, Zach Chapman [who finished second in the JV race] would have helped our varsity score, but we wanted him to run in a few JV races to build himself up to varsity pace full

Rocha, a Class 2A all-stater last year, took second.

“Mya has absolutely nothing to hang her head about,” Blumberg said. “She went up against two of the best we will see. Daly Galloway is unbelievable, and Rocha was an all-stater last year. For Mya, to take third behind them in her first race, is very good. I don’t know if we have had a freshman do as well in her first meet.”

Finishing after Shannon for Morris in the meet were Katherine Gallick, Alexis Holcomb, Emily Burling and Brooke Baudino.

“We know that the gap between Mya and our fifth runner has to get closer,” Blumberg said. “But those girls are all veterans. They know that and their times will get better.

We also had Lily and Sophie Tibbott that ran well in the JV race. This was their first meet, too, and we wanted to give them some confidence before we sent them into the fire with the varsity runners.”

Hamilton dominates STARS field in Pavement Nationals SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Nothing, not even a torrential downpour, could stop Kyle Hamilton during Saturday night’s D’Arcy GMC Pavement Nationals presented by Bell Helmets at Grundy County Speedway.

A heavy mid-afternoon storm soaked the 1⁄3-mile, paved oval, but that was not enough to pull the plug on the event. A relentless effort by the track crew to dry the racing surface allowed the night’s events to begin with only a slight delay.

In qualifying, Hamilton, known as “The Professor” in racing circles, claimed his fifth fast qualifying time in five STARS appearances this season. The quick lap also set a new STARS record as he collected his record ninth fast qualifying time in his career.

In the first heat, the story remained the same as Hamilton wasted no time getting to the front from his sixth starting spot and was able to pick up his first career heat race win in STARS action. Plainfield’s Nick Baran, who was gunning for his shot at coming one step closer to taking the $2,000 bonus for winning the Safety-Kleen Triple Crown, took the win in the second heat race.

Three-time UMARA champion, David Gough, and current STARS National Midget series point leader, Austin Prock, led the 17-car field to the green flag in the 50-lap feature. Gough got the jump on Prock at the start and took off to a comfortable advantage. While Gough was pacing the field, Hamilton methodically picked his way through.

On Lap 15, Hamilton got on the inside of Prock while entering turn three and it resulted in the two waging in a spectacular side-by-side battle for the next two laps. On Lap 17, Hamilton was finally able to clear Prock heading down the back straightaway, and then immediately dove to the low side in turn three to overtake the top spot from Gough.

From that point, it was all Kyle Hamilton, who led the remaining 32 laps to take his third win of the season and the seventh victory of his STARS career in only his 14th feature start, which moves him into sec-

Hamilton earned the first sweep in the history of the STARS National Midget series by turning the fastest lap in qualifying, winning his heat race, and then taking the checkered flag in the feature.

The next STARS event comes Saturday, with the Bob Lockard Memorial STARS National Midget race. Also on the agenda are the Illini Racing Series Midgets, STARS Classic Modifieds, INEX Legends, and the CSR Super Cups.

Adult tickets are $12. Kids ages 5 to 12 get in for $2. Children age 4 and younger are free. Pit gates open at 2 p.m., grandstands open at 5 and racing starts at 6:30 p.m.

“Our team was able to push through, even when we were down,” Perinar said. “When the points were critical, we were able to push through that which is a good sign for the season. Just knowing we can do that is going to take us really far this year.”

“I think we will be very solid,” Indians coach Chris Hoelscher said. “They are a wonderful group of girls. They are positive and they work hard.

They work for each other. That is one of our core values. We play for each other. They describe themselves as a cluster of grapes. They are all different, but very close to each other.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Chris Drey wasn’t initially credited with his squad’s lone score in Wednesday’s season opener against Lockport.

But that was okay with the Minooka junior, who was quick to credit fellow captain Mason Messina for his excellent free kick, which set up the goal in the 80th minute.

That combination helped to secure a 1-1 draw in the nonconference match against the visiting Porters, who looked like it might prevail, thanks to a goal in the 29th minute in addition to some fine play in the net from its three keepers.

“I got a great pass from Mason, and I just flicked it,” said Drey, who shares captain’s

duties with Luke St. Paul, David Esparza and Messina.

“It was a smart kick, and he just lobbed it up so that anyone could have gotten it. We have a really good team and we keep fighting. We have a young team but they’re ready to work every day. I’m excited about the season.”

Drey’s goal with just 37 seconds remaining capped what had been a frustrating afternoon for the Indians (0-01), who had many more good chances than did Lockport (00-1) but just couldn’t find the net.

Part of the reason for that were the efforts of Porter keeper Justin DeYoung, Jacob Krawczyk and Brian Moore, who all came up with big saves during the match.

LOCKPORT – After watching the sophomore teams battle in a close three-set match Tuesday, Minooka beat Lockport in a nailbiting two sets, 30-28, 25-22. Saying that the season started with excitement would be an understatement.

During the first set, the Indians and Porters battled neck and neck for each point.

Ginger Perinar blocked Olivia Witsaman, giving Minooka a 19-16 lead. Lockport called its first timeout and after play continued, the Porters stormed back.

The second set was similar to the first. The teams continued to battle each other, point for point. Like the first, Minooka came out on top.

“This is the first time that Minooka won its first game, ever,” Minooka setter Kelly Clucas said. “We won both matches, so it was really exciting. We played together as a team, and we pushed through.

We have a lot of potential this year because everyone plays well together.”

STAFF REPORTS LELAND – Make it two in a row for the Morris boys soccer team.

The Redskins won their second “D” pool group game Tuesday night, 4-2, against a relentless Rochelle team. Nick Borgstrom started the scoring with a nice goal three minutes into the game. Matt Borgstrom had a save in goal two minutes later, but three minutes after that, Rochelle was awarded a penalty kick in the box to tie the game at 1.

With 17:00 left in the 30-minute half, Ricardo Del Toro drove around the right corner of the field and was able slam a cross pass to Borgstrom, who converted his second goal in tight space.

The second half began with Del Toro once again providing an assist after tangling with several defenders on the left side 18-yard mark to a charging Luke Rodriguez coming in from outside the right post with a perfect one-touch goal into the empty net to make it, 3-1.

Midway through the second half, Conner Shaw had a cross from the left into the box that was played well by first Brian Haldorson, then Adrian Luna to a patient Conner McGlynn, who made a nice one-touch strike for the Redskins’ fourth a final score with 14:00 to play.

Rochelle scored on a hard charge to make the final score of 4-2, but, led by captains Kyle Schroeder and Tyler Pletsch, the Redskins were resolute on defense.

By winning Pool D in the tournament, Morris advances to take on Pool C second-place finisher Winnetka North Shore Country Day in the quarterfinals at 8:40 tonight in Earlville.

Brian W. Fosnaugh, age 56, of Gardner, formerly of Manhattan, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Tuesday, August 26, 2014.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Phyllis Fosnaugh of Manhattan; his children, Brooke and Kyle Fosnaugh of Gardner; his siblings, Keith Fosnaugh of Beecher, Jill (Al) Gothard of WI, Eric (Kay) Fosnaugh of Gardner, and Phillip (Sue) Fosnaugh of Manhattan; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Phillip and Matilda Triem; and his paternal grandparents, Carl and Mabel Fosnaugh.

Brian was a proud member of The Teamsters Local 179, working at Columbia Pipe and Supply Company for over 31 years.

He enjoyed fishing, rock-n-roll, cooking on the grill, was an avid Bears fan, and had an incomparable work ethic.

Above all, Brian was a dad, his life revolved around spending time with and taking care of his children whom he loved, he will be dearly missed.

Funeral service for Brian will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2014, at Forsythe Funeral Home, with Rev.

BURNETT E. ISHAM, JR. Born: Sept. 25, 1949; in Morris, IL Died: Aug. 26, 2014; in Mazon, IL Burnett E. Isham, Jr., age 64, of Mazon, passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2014. Born in Morris on September 25, 1949, he was the son of the late Burnett E. and Lillian (Hynd) Isham, Sr. Burnett was raised on the family dairy farm and attended Mazon High School, graduating with the Class of

1968. After high school, he continued farming with his family, raising dairy cattle.

On June 8, 1969, Burnett married Deborah Hanson. He was the owner and founder of Isham Granite. Burnett loved farming and enjoyed teaching his sons many skills and trades around the farm. He was a master welder and master of many trades that he would pass along to his children who continue to operate the Isham Granite and farm today.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau.

Survived by his wife, Debbie; sons, Shane (Kathy) Isham of Coal City, Scott (Melissa) Isham of Mazon, and Dustin (Charlene) Isham of Mazon; sister, Lela (Ralph) Haldorson of Wilmington; brother, Gene (Nancy) Isham of Mazon; and sister, Diann (Gary) Rink of Coal City; grandchildren, Levi, Lillian, Brandon, Ashley, Michael, Madelyn, Daniel, Sophia, and Lorenzo.

Burnett was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Burnett will be held on Friday, August 29, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris.

A private family service will be held immediately following the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded.

GRUNDY COUNTY – The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit from Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital will be at the Morris American Legion on Sept. 8.

The unit will be at the Legion Hall, 212 W. Washington St. in Morris, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8, according to a news release.

The Mobile Medical Cen-

ter will again visit Grundy County from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sept. 15, at a location yet to be determined.

The Mobile Medical Unit also will offer flu shots beginning in October. Availability will be dependent on getting the vaccine at Hines in time.

Give a good diet a chance Just in time for the millions of young people who have returned to college comes a study in The Journal of Nutrition that warns of the health risks of that fast and cheap campus favorite, ramen noodles.

A two-year survey of 10,711 South Koreans showed that eating two or more servings of ramen noodles a week can result in an increase in heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and stroke. Next thing you know, they’ll be telling students that large quantities of pizza and beer aren’t good for them either.

No one needed a medical study to demonstrate that a package of processed ramen noodles is not a healthy food choice. All you have to do is read the nutrition label on the side to see that it contains a large dose of sodium.

If anything, the ramen noodles report should sensitize college students and their parents about the general need to maintain a sensible diet while away from home.

Two years ago an Auburn University study reported that researchers tracked 131 students through four years of college and learned that 70 percent of them had gained weight by graduation. The average gain was 12 pounds; the maximum was 37. So much for the “Freshman 15” – college weight gain hits more than freshmen and can add more than 15 pounds.

The study by the Alabama university also said that the percentage of students who were overweight rose from 18 percent to 31 percent. But not all those pounds came from salty noodles.

College students gain weight not just because they’re no longer eating from their parents’ refrigerator but because they keep irregular hours (for studying, of course), rely on quick snacks too often, are tempted by fatty cafeteria foods and get insufficient exercise.

With a new school year underway, let’s hope that America’s collegians take this as food for thought: Weight watching is not just for freshmen, but for life.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Holder is leading the rush to judgment One thing an old Ivy League revolutionary can’t stand is people noticing that he represents the Establishment. That he embodies the System to a point where he can make it stop and make it go. He will go to great lengths to convince himself, if not others, this is not so.

Take Eric H. Holder Jr., Columbia College Class of 1973, Columbia Law School Class of 1976, now into his sixth year as U.S. attorney general of the Obama Imperium. The man really wants us to think he also is not “the man.”

Yes, he is “the attorney general of the United States,” as Holder told a group of St. Louis Community College students in Ferguson, Missouri, this week. “But I am also a black man.”

Holder took himself to Ferguson to spur the federal civil rights probe by more than 40 FBI agents into the shooting death of

VIEWS Diana West 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black, by 28-yearold police officer Darren Wilson, who is white. As the Justice chief declared at local FBI headquarters: “We’re looking for possible violations of federal civil rights statutes.”

Even the dark suits and American flags fail to obscure the 21st-century lynch mob at work. According to the snap judgment of federal and state authorities, Wilson shot the 6-foot4, 292-pound man multiple times for “racist” reasons.

The other story out there gathering reportorial mass is that Wilson fired as Brown charged him after having beaten Wilson to the point of fracturing his orbital socket and rendering the six-year veteran cop nearly unconscious, but,

heavens, don’t let what’s quaintly known as the judicial process function unimpeded to ascertain the facts.

Keep that media circus going because the nation’s top cop is ringmaster.

Holder’s remarks continue. “I think about my time in Georgetown – a nice neighborhood of Washington,” he added, grossly underselling Washington’s fabled section for WASP bluebloods – “and I am running to a picture movie at about 8 o’clock at night. I am running with my cousin. Police car comes driving up, flashes his lights, yells, ‘Where you going? Hold it!’

I say, ‘Woah, I’m going to a movie.’ Now my cousin started mouthing off. I’m like, ‘This is not where we want to go. Keep quiet.’ I’m angry and upset. We negotiate the whole thing and we walk to our movie. At the time that he stopped me, I was a federal prosecutor. ... So I’ve confronted this myself.”

The point is not simply that Holder’s experiences are not racially unique.

Nor is it that he seems to be using them to feign “street cred” with young people less privileged than he.

What should outrage every American is the spectacle of an attorney general serving not the principle and practice of the law, but rather using his considerable powers and influence to scapegoat a policeman who is presumed innocent, who hasn’t been charged, let alone tried. Serving to perpetuate racial animosity, not justice, the U.S. attorney general is leading the rush to judgment.

In the 1940s, a man named Walter Morrison remembered the fun he had throwing Frisbee® pie tins while a student at Yale. He invented a way to make a similar throwing toy out of plastic. He called it a Frisbee® disc in memory of the pie tins turned into toys.

When the owner of a toy company called Wild Planet went to meet with some children to talk about how to improve their toys, she asked the children to do some inventive thinking.

To start, she asked them what different things could be done with a glove.

His canvas pants sold as quickly as they were made. Levi gave up the idea of gold mining and ordered more cloth.

He had found his fortune.

The students at Yale University loved Joseph Frisbee’s pies. They even loved his pie tins!

Tossing empty pie tins became a favorite way to pass time between classes. With a firm flick of the wrist, the tin would sort of float through the air.

Coogan, Brydon shine in ‘The Trip to Italy’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now In 2011, American art house audiences were caught unaware by the delightful, hilarious, thought-provoking and delicious faux documentary “The Trip,” in which British actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, playing slightly skewed versions of themselves, drove all over England, dining in fine restaurants and publishing stories of their experiences.

That film began life as a mostly improvised six-part BBC TV series, directed by Michael Winterbottom, who then whittled it down to movie length for American consumption. Last year, the BBC dangled the carrot of a second helping, this time in Italy, in front of the director and stars, resulting in another six-part series. Now another movie, “The Trip to Italy,” is being served.

It’s more of a remake, rather than a sequel, featuring the two quick-witted, well-read, intelligent guys with a penchant for doing impersonations of movie stars once again hopping in a car, eating at fancy restaurants, making yummy sounds, chatting about literature, film and music, pining

about getting older, and holding one-on-one competitions involving who can do a better vocal impression of Michael Caine and Sean Connery.

Both films had outlines concerning what would be discussed at the restaurants and in the car, but then the A-one improvisatory skills of Coogan and Brydon were let loose, to hilarious effect, most notably when they launch into a lengthy and absurdly funny spree on how difficult it was to understand Tom Hardy’s muffled dialogue as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

There’s a suggestion that the two friends haven’t seen each other for a while, so there’s plenty for them to talk about, and topics end up ranging from the friendship and poetry of Lord Byron and Percy Shelley to the songs of Alanis Morrisette.

Because this a move that features food, taking place in a country that loves food, the focus keeps returning to the six restaurants they visit and dine at. It makes little sense that these guys would have assignments to review and report on food since they don’t seem to know much about it beyond what looks good and tastes good. But that’s never brought up, and the cameras

stay busy getting right up into their faces as they eat, and keep cutting away for quick glances into the busy kitchens where the meals are being prepared.

Yet the film is more about both the relationship between – and the private inner thoughts of – the two men, and there are moments that are quite moving. Amidst the comedy, it’s subtly revealed that when they’re not together, they’re both kind of lonely, and are each experiencing midlife crises. The divorced Coogan has uncomfortable Skype talks with his teenage son, and the supposedly happily married Brydon finds that his wife always has an excuse not to talk with him when he phones her. At night, in their separate hotel rooms, Coogan reads Byron aloud, and Brydon loses himself in rehearsing lines for an upcoming movie audition.

A major difference between the two films is that in the first one it was Coogan who was offered the writing assignment, and brought Brydon along, but this time it’s Brydon being asked to write the articles, and giving a call to Coogan. Both of them are once again presented as being between acting gigs, so are

able to get away. The other difference is that the first time around, Coogan played it as brash and ambitious and egotistical, and now he’s calmer, while Brydon gets to be the more rambunctious of the two.

But the main mood keeps returning to the comedy coming out of their constant banter. Coogan sometimes can’t even get a word in during a Brydon rant, and Winterbottom gives viewers the gift of leaving in a Capri-set sequence (yes, there are also boat rides) where Brydon cracks up Coogan for real.

The film runs a tad long and it ends too abruptly. But it’s hard to complain when there are so many comic tangents, such lovely drives through the bucolic countryside, an unexpected reverence displayed for the city of Pompeii, and, along with the poppy and raucous sounds of Alanis Morrisette, the glorious and sweeping ones of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler – a curious choice since neither was Italian.

Dear Abby: My mother-in-law is 80 and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. She lives alone an hour and a half from us. She also has a professional who takes care of her once a week. My husband, “Fred,” goes to help and entertain her every weekend, and I sometimes accompany him. She has enough money to stay in an assisted living facility, but Fred wants to build a motherin-law apartment for her on our property.

Abby, I DON’T LIKE HER. She was a bully when she was younger, and she’s still manipulative. She has made some comments about me hitting her, which never happened. Of course, Fred believed me. If she lives with us, I will be her main caregiver because I have a homebased business and a flexible schedule.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips I have already said no to Fred’s idea, but I don’t want to be the bad guy. His two brothers live states away and don’t want to be involved because of the way their mother treated them during their teens. Fred is the only son willing to overlook past issues and has made peace with her.

Caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease is a full-time job because the disease is PROGRESSIVE. While Fred’s mother can live alone with the help of a professional once a week now, that

will soon not be the case. She will become increasingly helpless and so confused that should an emergency arise in her apartment she will be unable to think sequentially enough to know what to do.

She may no longer recognize who you are and become agitated and combative.

For these reasons your mother-in-law should be in an assisted living facility staffed with caregivers who have been trained to take care of people with Alzheimer’s. Because you have a business to run, it can’t be you.

Since Fred has made peace with his mother, he should visit her often to ensure she is well-treated. But he should NOT expect the responsibility of caring for her to be yours because it is unrealistic.

Age-related changes affect the GI tract Dear Doctor K: As I’ve entered my 70s, I’ve noticed that my eating and bowel habits have changed. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: Well, I could tell you what it says in the medical textbooks, or I could speak from personal experience. The answer would be the same: It sure is normal.

Aging most definitely affects our eating and bowel habits. The human digestive system – our gastrointestinal (GI) tract, or “gut” – is a series of hollow organs linked to form a long, twisting tube. It begins at the mouth and winds down through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. These organs break down food into components that the body can absorb and use for energy. What’s left is expelled by an efficient disposal system. (I’ve put an illustration of the GI tract on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Here are some age-related changes you may have noticed: • The mouth. As we age, the number and sensitivity of our taste buds decline. Our chewing muscles also weaken and we begin to lose teeth. The food we swallow next enters the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach, called the esophagus.

• The esophagus. Food does not simply drop down the esophagus;

When they are stimulated by the presence of a lump of chewed food, they just automatically squeeze the food downward.

Unfortunately, the muscles of the esophagus weaken as we age.

They contract less vigorously around food after swallowing, and this can make swallowing more difficult.

Weakened muscles in the esophagus also can cause a second problem. Muscles at the bottom of the esophagus, where it enters the stomach, normally squeeze down hard after food passes through.

This keeps stomach acid from squirting back up into the esophagus. When those muscles become weaker with age, it can contribute to acid reflux.

And it may make acid reflux and “heartburn” less of a problem.

But lower levels of stomach acid can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. That’s because stomach acid helps the small intestine absorb vitamin B12 in food. Lower levels of stomach acid also can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.

• The colon. The final stage of digestion happens in the colon, or large intestine. Just as happens in the esophagus, muscles in the wall of the colon squeeze the waste downward. Moving one’s bowels may be the most frequent GI challenge associated with aging. In general, people have more trouble having regular bowel movements after they reach age 65. Weakness and poor coordination of the muscles of the colon are a major reason for this.

Although our gut ages along with the rest of us, and that can contribute to some of the infirmities of growing older, there are effective treatments. We’ll discuss these in future columns.

• The stomach and small intestine.

The stomach is a storage and processing facility where food is prepared for digestion. The stomach produces acid, which helps break down food. As we age, the stomach

He is my soul mate, and we are getting married on my 20th birthday in October. In high school I dated Tyler for two years. He is a nice guy and we stayed good friends even after we broke up. Now she is upset because I’m watching poker on TV. She told my dad that watching “that junk” will cause me to one day become a gambler. That’s simply not true. I watch murders on television and I’m never going to murder someone just because I saw a person murdered on television.

Now my dad has restricted me from watching poker on the tube, so I’ve got to go over to my friend’s house to watch Texas Hold ’Em. This week we are looking at active and passive defense. The defenders either strive to take winners (active) or sit back and wait for declarer to give them tricks (passive). First, the defenders listen to the auction. But when that does not help them to know which plan to adopt, they must take the dummy into account. Is it threatening or not?

Threatening is a dummy with a short suit, giving declarer ruffing tricks, or a long side suit, offering declarer a second source of winners. Unthreatening is a balanced hand.

In this example, how should East defend against four spades after West leads the diamond two and East takes dummy’s queen with his king?

I would have raised to three no-trump with that North hand because of the strong doubleton – and gone down in flames after a diamond lead.

East, since the dummy is so flat, should return a diamond at trick two, which removes that dummy entry.

If declarer is psychic, he can make the contract: heart to the queen, two rounds of trumps, diamond ruff in the dummy, second heart finesse, cash the heart ace, and run the club nine. East wins with his 10 and returns a low club, but South plays low from his hand to lose only one diamond and two clubs. However, he is unlikely to find that line and will go down.

With a relatively flat dummy, stay passive.

That is a question brothersin-law Dick Parker and Dave Welsh are used to hearing. The answer, they said, is simple: “because the door was open.”

Parker, 74, and Welsh, 67, took to the skies again Sunday to free fall from an airplane at 13,500 feet at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa. It was the first time either had done that particular kind of jump in nearly four decades.

The pair have racked up an impressive number of jumps: Parker, for instance, made 776 free fall jumps before 1977. In addition, he has done 15 military jumps, some while in the Army and some after he was out. Welsh made 116 civilian skydives before 1976, with an additional seven military static line jumps, some while in the service, and more since he left the Army.

When he wasn’t jumping out of airplanes Parker boxed in the Golden Gloves, played fast pitch softball, played basketball in Morris Cage League and over 30 league until he was 5-years-old. He has ran road races with his daughter Dana, coached his daughter Addie in fast pitch softball and coached his grandson Brody McNabb in baseball.

Parker plans to continue his fast-paced, sports-filled life by coaching his granddaughters Camryn Mullen and Audry McNabb.

In order to free fall, the duo had to take seven hours of refresher classes, which they split between Friday night and Saturday morning.

After class they diligently went through their prejump checklist, viewed the landing area and got instructions on how they needed to guide themselves into the right landing area after jumping from the twin otter plane used for skydiving.

As they awaited their jump time, storm clouds rolled in and their jump was canceled for Saturday, but that didn’t deter the brothers-in-law, who have jumped together since Welsh graduated high school in 1964.

“We went back on Sunday at 8 a.m.,” Welsh said. “We got to jump at about noon.”

Parachutes have changed a lot since their last free fall jumps, Parker in 1977 and Welsh in 1976. The parachutes used today bear little resemblance to the classic round parachutes that Welsh and

He enjoys restoring motorcycles, tractors and anything else on wheels. He enjoys showing motorcycles and cars at car shows.

According to the Skydive Chicago website, nearly all jumpers use “ram-air” parachutes. These are rectangular in shape and, when open, act like an airplane wing. They are more like gliders than umbrellas.

Sarah Beckers, the instructor who jumped with Parker, said most of her clients don’t

have the experience that Parker and Welsh have, but a lot has changed since they last free fall jumped, which was before she was born.

The two did a military static line jump in Florida last February and have plans to go back next year, and they are excited about their next free fall opportunity, which they

Rauner visits Morris, Braidwood

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner stressed the importance of small town families and diverse backgrounds as he swung by Grundy and Will counties Wednesday morning to kick off the second leg of his Shake Up Express Bus Tour.

The Rauner campaign stopped by the Talty Chevrolet at 1850 N. Division St. in Morris, then headed to Golden Mine Family Restaurant, 111 S. Front St., Braidwood.

“Grundy County is a burgeoning county with great people who need a champion in Springfield to help them continue to grow,” Rauner said. “Grundy County is an integral part of Illinois’ agricultural industry and I look forward to going to work for the people of Grundy County and all of Illinois.”

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, rode with Rauner from the starting point in Sheridan to Morris and on to Braidwood.

“It was really great to get to spend time with him,” Anthony said. “He is really interested in places like Morris.

What I like about him is that he wants all voters of all types to come out and support him.”

Along with continuing the remaining 23 counties on his tour, Rauner said he’s planning to campaign hard in Cook County to grab some of the vote from the Democratic stronghold.

During his Braidwood visit, he touched on several of his talking points, including instituting term limits, eliminating hikes in income taxes and a hot topic recently, he promised to move his family into the governor’s mansion in Springfield if elected.

“I think if we as parents aren’t involved in the political process, then neither will our kids,” Hasselbring said, adding that she made it a point to speak out about the lack of support and credit homeschool parents receive.

Braidwood resident and Chamber of Commerce President Angie Hutton said she was surprised Rauner came to her small town, but it was a good event for the city.

“All the businesses need more support,” Hutton said, hopeful that Rauner, if elected, can help.

Rauner chose Braidwood.

“If you live here you know this is a small, nice and quiet community,” Ajrulaj said, adding that businesses could use more help to grow the economy.

Braidwood Mayor Bill Rulien also said it was nice that a state-wide candidate seems to be paying attention to the smaller towns.

“For the towns to prosper, the state has to prosper,” Rulien said.

Rauner urged residents at the restaurant to vote because the election could be very close between him and Gov. Pat Quinn, who he called “the worst governor in America.”

“This is a big team effort,” Rauner said. “We’re going to win this race.”

and DAVID GOOD dgood@shawmedia.com A Morris youth swim coach accused of slipping a pill into a woman’s drink at a Lombard bar was arrested this week during open registration for the Joliet and Morris Stingrays, according to Lombard police.

The arrest happened at Morris Community High School, where practices are held. The club is not affiliated with the high school but rents the facilities for D. Jay Andersen practice.

D. Jay Andersen, 49, of the 200 block of Ottawa Bend Drive, Morris, was charged just after 6 p.m. Monday with misdemeanor counts of assault and disorderly conduct, Lombard Det. Benny Ranallo said.

Surveillance video from the bar on Roosevelt Road in Lombard showed Andersen on June 7 dropping something into the beer bottle of a woman who had accompanied him to the bar after she stepped away from the table to use the

restroom, Ranallo said. When she returned, she saw the bottle had been moved, noticed a pill in the bottle and did not drink from it, he said.

Lombard police conducted an undercover operation at a Morris bar on July 3. The woman who contacted Lombard police about the June 7 incident worked with police in the operation there.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said his department was made aware of the ongoing investigation at that time.

Undercover Lombard officers took Andersen into custody then, Ranallo said. He was later released, until a warrant for his arrest was issued.

“There are other reports to other police agencies alleging similar behavior, but this incident is the only one we are aware of that occurred in Lombard,” Ranallo said.

A call to a man who identified himself as Mitch Zuchara, administrator of JAMS, declined to comment at this time.

Calls and an email to the phone number and email listed on the JAMS website for D. Jay Andersen were not immediately returned or answered Wednesday.

Andersen posted 10 percent of his $5,000 bond and was released Monday. His court date has not yet been posted.

MINOOKA – Minooka village trustees have agreed to pay $199,983 annually for 9-11 communication services to Grundy County – despite nearly unanimous disapproval of a huge jump in the village’s annual contribution.

In a 4-2 vote Tuesday, trustees approved a three-year contract with the county for the service. Trustees Dick Parrish and Barry Thompson voted against the contract, while Ray Mason, Dennis Martin, Rudy Martin and Terry Houchens voted in favor.

“While I think this agreement is not good, I am going to vote for it because it’s the best we have,” Houchens saidbefore the vote.

When the consolidated emergency system – which serves four villages, the county and nine fire districts – was put into place three years ago, the county paid for the program strictly through county taxes.

Last year, the county divided up the operating costs among participants, and Minooka’s portion was $100,000.

Now that the cost has nearly doubled, the Village Board has major concerns about the program, including the way the county is allocating costs.

Village taxpayers are paying twice for emergency services – through county property taxes and again through village property taxes, Dennis Martin said.

The only exception are residents and industry in unincorporated areas, who only contribute to the system through the county, since they don’t pay village taxes, Thompson said.

Most industrial companies are not in village limits, Dennis Martin said.

“I think the whole taxing mechanism is outrageous,”

Houchens said.

While the village’s portion increased almost two-fold, the county’s portion was reduced by $91,000. The county pays 58.89 percent of the system’s operating budget.

The costs are allocated by calls made to the 9-1-1 system, Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said. But that includes service and event calls; not all calls made to dispatchers are bad.

“If you have an active [police] department, you have a lot of calls,” Meyer said.

The agreement was approved in order to continue receiving services, but the board will explore what other options are available for the future.

Thompson said he warned the board a few years ago to be careful with this particular contract.

“We have no idea what our [future] burden is going to be,” he said.

Houchens said he hopes taxpayers will pay attention to the issue.

“They [the county] pass the buck to municipalities,” he said.

HISTORY When Welsh graduated high school in 1964, Parker was just out of the Army and he asked Welsh if he was interested in jumping. At only 17, Welsh had to get his mother to sign for him to be allowed to jump.

“I thought he was crazy,”

Welsh said. “But I went along with him.”

He found out it wasn’t so bad.

Their first jump together was in Streator, and from there, they started jumping where they could.

They created the Midwest Sky Masters at Morris Airport, and approached Frank Welch at the Grundy County Fair and asked if they could jump into the middle of the race track, which was located in Mazon at that time.

“Frank said don’t be surprised if no one watches when you jump,” Parker said. “Everyone stopped and watched us

The group continued to jump for different local events, and Welsh said he’ll never forget the time they were hired to do an exhibition jump for a Boy Scout troop in Dwight.

“We landed and no one was around but a couple of people who started clapping,” he said.

“They canceled the event and no one told us.”

Founded in 1869 along the Rock Island Railroad, the village of Minooka was originally called “the summit” by railroad workers because it was the highest point along the railroad line.

According to The Electronic Encyclopedia of Chicago, Minooka was named by early settler Dolly Smith, after a Pottawatomie word for “good land” or “high place.” According to information on the village’s website, compiled by Michele Houchens, at the time of the village’s incorporation, Leander Smith, husband of Dolly Smith, was named village president with A.K. Knapp, William Jordan, Thomas Harris and S.B. Alsdurf as elected trustees.

St. Mary’s Church was organized in 1862. The current church was built in 1905 after a fire destroyed the original church. The Minooka Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1856, though the original church was destroyed by

a tornado in 1917. The current church was built soon after the tornado, according to the information from Houchens.

Transportation played a large role in turning Minooka into the booming community it is today. In 1852, the first train entered Grundy County in what is now Minooka. In the 1960s, Interstate 80 was built, which gave easier access to Minooka, according to the village website.

At the 2010 census, the population of the village was 10,924. Its 2013 population is estimated at 11,129, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In a welcome message from Village President Pat Brennan, Minooka is a vibrant, growing community and with the help of its residents, will continue to improve every day and keep the village “a nice place to call home.”
