IEMA encourages residents to register for The Great ShakeOut earthquake drill District of Columbia and several countries around the globe are expected to participate in The Great ShakeOut, according to the news release. The drill is designed to raise awareness about earthquake risks and the ways people can stay safe when the ground starts shaking.

Illinois has participated in ShakeOut drills for the past four years. In October 2013, more than 523,000 Illinoisans took part in the nationwide earthquake drill. To date, more than 237,000 people in Illinois are registered for the October ShakeOut event.

Since then, they’ve learned to streamline the harvesting job, getting it to people’s tables within hours of being picked.

The Marengo farm works with the food depository and the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which services Grundy County.

So far this year, the NIFB and Greater Chicago Food Depository have brought in 20,000 pounds of sweet corn – even before the Jeschke farm donated the two tractor-trailer loads harvested last week.

Some of that harvest was sent directly to We Care of Grundy County, which came and picked up a load of sweet corn for its clients.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents to take part in a worldwide earthquake drill set for Oct. 16.

“The Napa Valley earthquake is a reminder that earthquakes happen without warning,” IEMA Director Jonathon Monken said in a news release.

“With two major seismic zones here in the central U.S., we all need to be prepared to take quick actions to stay safe during an earthquake. The Great ShakeOut is a good way for schools, businesses, families and others to practice the life-saving ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ moves.”

By SARAH GISH The Kansas City Star Every night before bed, Sue Patterson packs her 10-yearold daughter, Emmy, a lunch that resembles a work of art.

Picture a heart-shaped roast beef sandwich nestled into a Hello Kitty container with colorful cups of dried fruit, olives, organic cheese and yogurt-covered pretzels.

Or a pink Japanese-style bento box with a California sushi roll, shelled edamame, red grapes and kiwis cut into cute fan shapes.

Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich would be easier. But Patterson says she’s a big believer in eating a variety of healthy, organic food, so spending 15 to 20 minutes preparing her daughter’s lunch is no big deal.

“It’s totally worth it so she can have a good, high-quality lunch every day,” Patterson says.

Not all healthy lunches have to be Pinterest-worthy.

With a little planning and a fridge full of convenient kid-approved foods, parents can send their kids back to school with a midday meal that’s as fun as it is nutritious.

Gary Hild, executive chef at the Culinary Center of Kansas City, says a great lunch begins with great ingredients.

“A sandwich is fine,” he says, “but be sure to be a good label reader.”

The chef recommends bread that says “100 percent whole wheat” on the label, mayonnaise made with olive oil and sliced turkey or chicken that’s free of fillers such as gelatin.

Rinse quinoa well, then put it in a saucepan with 2 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until all water is absorbed (about 15 minutes). The quinoa is done when the grain appears soft and the red becomes translucent.

The germ ring will be visible along the outside edge of the grain. Allow to cool to room temperature.

While quinoa is cooking, mix dressing ingredients together.

Toss cooked quinoa with onion, black beans, avocado and cilantro. Add dressing and toss until evenly distributed. Serve at room temperature.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com LELAND – It might not have been exactly as Morris boys coach David Valdivia had asked for, but it was awfully close, as the Redskins opened their season with an 8-1 win over Lisle in the War on 34 Tournament on Wednesday.

“I told the kids before the game that I wanted to win, 7-0,” Valdivia smiled. “I will take 8-1, though.”

Senior Ricardo Del Toro, whom Valdivia has nicknamed “El Matador,” did his best to live up to the moniker, as he scored four goals, including the first two of the season.

He added an assist on Nick Rodriguez’s goal in the first half as the Redskins built a 3-1 lead at intermission.

Del Toro continued his assault on the Lisle defense early in the second half, as he scored off an assist from Brad Haldorson just 30 seconds into the second half and added another one off an assist from Rodriguez three minutes later.

“I was very pleased with Ricardo Del Toro coming out and leading the team,” Valdivia said. “He did what he does best, scoring goals. It was nice to see him get a hat trick plus one in the first game of the year.”

Morris, which took on Rochelle, who earlier beat Lisle, 1-0, took a little longer to get going in the first half, as Del Toro misfired on his first three attempts before finally finding the back of the net with 24:30 to play in the first half. The game was played in 30-minute halves instead of the standard 40 due to the number of games scheduled on a Leland field with no lights.

Once the Redskins found their groove, they kept it going. Five minutes after Del Toro scored his first goal, he scored again, then got the assist on Rodriguez’s goal a minute later. Lisle finally got on the board with a penalty kick with 3:30 to play in the first half on one of the few

“We did a good job of controlling the ball,” Valdivia said. “We came out pretty confident, and I thought we looked pretty sharp for a first game.

We do still have some position battles going on, so it was nice to get a lot of kids in there to get some time and see what they could do.”

After Del Toro went to the bench after his fourth goal, Rodriguez took a ball up the right side and crossed a pass to the center of the field. Freshman Conner Shaw stepped into the middle of the group and headed it in for one of the prettier goals Morris will see all

season. That made the score, 6-1 before Konner Wilhelm showed his former team what it was missing.

Wilhelm, a junior who spent his freshman year at Lisle, scored twice from long range late in the game to provide the final score.

“I was very proud of Konner,” Valdivia said. “He wanted a chance to play against his old team and he promised me he would score. Then, he went out and scored twice. That was nice to see.

“It was also good to see Luke Rodriguez play well. He can play either forward or right outside for us, and he did a good job at both today.”

“I asked [Rose on Monday], and he said, ‘I feel great,’ ” Krzyzewski told reporters. ‘‘He did everything. He’s fullgo. I think there’s a part of him that’s like, ‘Quit asking me how I feel. I’m good.’ So I’m not going to ask him anymore.”

You’d hope someone has to, because while FIBA World Cup tournament play doesn’t start until Saturday, Rose continued to look like a guy whose game never made it through customs.

Coming off the bench behind Kyrie Irving for a second consecutive game, Rose

looked unsure with the ball, evident in three turnovers in his 20 minutes. He was a pedestrian 3 for 6 from the free-throw line, missed an uncontested layup and seemed passive on offense (0 for 3) and inconsistent on defense (minus-4 in the plus/minus category).

He wasn’t the player who first showed up to Las Vegas last month, wowing teammates and coaches on both sides of the ball.

But for now, Rose gets a free pass. He missed two days of practice and an exhibition game in New York while battling fatigue last week, and of course there’s the elephant in the room of having played just 10 regular-season games since the 2012 playoffs because of season-ending surgeries to both knees.

Not that Rose minds being a decoy rather than a highlight film – a mentality he has preached since checking in to USA Basketball.

Aside from quarterback David Fales, who did not play so the quarterbacks could get their reps, Jordan Lynch and Marcus Trice are the only two who did not play that still are with the team.

They both survived the first set of cuts.

It never is a great sign to not play in a preseason game when one is on the roster bubble. It’s a missed opportunity to put together quality tape, but Lynch will get a lot of chances to prove something in the preseason finale Thursday in Cleveland.

“I expect you’ll see quite a bit of him. I’m sure he’ll have an opportunity to carry the football, to do a little

bit of what he did a couple of games ago when he got a couple of reps and did very well running the football,” coach Marc Trestman said after Tuesday’s practice. “So it’ll be a good opportunity for him to get out there and show what he’s learned and how he’s improved over the last month of playing a completely new position.

“That’ll involve pass protection, as well. You know this is a team that brings the blitz, so he’ll have an opportunity to get in the pass protection, as well, and catch some balls outside the pocket and stuff like that. I’m excited for him and his opportunity.”

In the preseason opener, the only time Lynch got reps on offense, the former Northern Illinois quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist had seven carries for 24 yards, including a 12-yard run. He played in five special teams

snaps against Jacksonville.

“It’s a very exciting week, now I get to actually go out there and kind of showcase my talent. I’m really excited,” Lynch said. “I’m prepared for this and I just love football. I get a chance to go out there fly around and have fun.”

The Bears will cut their roster down to 53 players, releasing 22 players, at some point before Saturday afternoon. Lynch is a long shot to make the team, and certainly is a candidate for the practice squad. But he also knows a good performance against the Browns helps his cause to join another team’s roster or practice squad.

“Like the coaches said, you’re not only auditioning for this team, you’re auditioning for 31 other teams,” he said.

Receivers Morgan, Holmes get ready for preseason finale

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – It’s cliché when Josh Morgan says his focus is just about getting better every day, without thinking too much about playing for a job in the preseason finale Thursday in Cleveland.

But Morgan is no stranger to this situation, despite some more comfortable roster situations previously in his career.

He has played in the preseason finale in each of the past five seasons, making 10 catches for 81 yards.

“You can’t really worry about anything else, you can’t really focus on anything else, especially the business part of football,” Morgan said after Tuesday’s practice. “You just go in there, put in your work.

If you’re getting better, regardless of the business part, you did your job.”

Morgan has eight catches for a team-high 125 yards this preseason and is still competing to be the No. 3 wideout.

Santonio Holmes is a little less familiar with playing in a preseason finale. He last did it in 2010, when he had four catches for 97 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown. Normally, he would have rested, but he faced a four-game suspension to start that season and the Jets gave him the extra work.

Holmes has to continue to cram to learn the offense and prove he gets it, and is healthy enough to make an impact. As for any pressure he may have, all things considered, Holmes responded to a reporter, “I’m a former Super Bowl MVP. There’s no pressure.”

Brown, Frey waived: The Bears’ final two cuts to get the roster to 75 by Tuesday’s deadline were familiar names: offensive lineman James Brown and cornerback Isaiah Frey. Brown led the team in snaps in the preseason opener, but then didn’t even play on offense in Seattle. He spent 2013 with the Bears but was inactive for all 16 games. Frey, who injured his hamstring Aug. 5, was the nickel corner last season but had only one pass defensed while playing on almost 50 percent of the snaps and was behind Kyle Fuller, Kelvin Hayden and core special-teamer Sherrick McManis on the depth chart. Should the Bears carry six corners, Frey’s absence opens the door for players such as Demontre Hurst and C.J. Wilson.

Update aging technology to help state’s issues Illinois state government is in trouble again.

This time, the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services let Illinois have it for its faulty way of withdrawing federal Medicaid money.

The federal audit, released last week, found that the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, during fiscal 2010 through 2012, averaged withdrawing $60 million more quarterly in Medicaid money than it actually needed.

That’s a no-no.

The extra Medicaid money was deposited in the state’s general fund and used for purposes for which it was not intended, such as transportation, education and pensions.

That’s another no-no.

And during the time period that was audited, Illinois was two to six months late in repaying the Medicaid money, which cost the federal government nearly $800,000 in lost interest.

Oops.

State officials said they justified all the money they withdrew.

The problem, according to Michael Casey, a state finance administrator, is the state’s outdated, 30-year-old computer system.

It’s so old it can’t do daily calculations for the reimbursement rates for a half-dozen different programs. So officials basically give their best educated guess as to the dollar amounts needed.

Blaming the computer is as old an excuse as the computer age itself.

But in this case, Casey is right.

The authors of “Fixing Illinois: Politics and Policy in the Prairie State” reported the findings of a 2009 report by the Taxpayers’ Action Board.

James D. Nowlan and J. Thomas Johnson wrote that Illinois’ human services departments have “dozens of legacy computer systems,” and many of them are 30 to 40 years old.

Such antiquated, fragmented systems “inhibit worker productivity, prevent Illinois from reducing costs, and challenge cross-department collaboration,” they wrote.

That prompted Nowlan and Johnson to offer No. 27 of their 98 suggestions to improve state government.

They call on the state to develop a modern information technology system for human services, where all agencies can share information about clients.

To pay for all the new computers, software and networks, the state’s bonding authority should be used for “this desperately needed long-term capital investment.”

Nowlan and Johnson have an excellent point.

The aging computer systems in state government are dragging it down.

Upgrades across the board could greatly lessen problems in human services agencies, and very likely other state departments and agencies.

While Mr. Casey was quoted as saying his department is due to receive new computers by the end of 2017, we say that’s not soon enough.

It’s time for state governmental leaders to get serious about addressing the state’s aging information technology before it gets Illinois into any more trouble.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Feeling nostalgic for rotary telephone and a simpler time SPRINGFIELD – I bought a “new” phone the other day.

My 6-year-old, Anna, gave it a perplexed look.

“Where’s the buttons, Daddy?”

“There isn’t any, dear. It’s what’s called a rotary phone.”

She gave it another skeptical look and walked away.

Yes, when I dial, I actually dial.

An hour or so later when my wife got home from work she, too, gave it a bewildered look and said, “Why did you install that old thing? It doesn’t even have Caller ID. How will we know whether to answer the phone or not?”

Folks, it’s not about nostalgia.

Sometimes, I think I just need a break from technology. Growing up, all the phones in our house had dials. The idea of push button technology was in its infancy.

No one ever got stuck in voicemail hell.

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder I remember watching a news program back in the ‘70s where the reporter noted that someday people might have phones small enough to carry in their pockets – that weren’t connected to wires.

My father just shook his head and said “I wouldn’t want to have a phone where I could be called anytime, anywhere.”

Flash forward 40 years and now he carries a cellphone with him wherever he goes.

I’m the same way — electronics seem to be taking over my life. My kids make bookmarks at school, but I have no way to use them with my Kindle.

I bicycle 17 miles daily, but not through the country roads of Sangamon County.

Instead, I’m on a stationary bike at a gym, peering at movies on my iPad. And I have a phone in my pocket with an app for just about everything but curing cancer.

Today, they are a source of entertainment. When I walk into a restaurant, I see faces young and old enthralled with whatever is on that tiny screen.

Don’t people talk to one another face-to-face anymore?

Installing a dial phone won’t make those frustrations go away, of course.

But it does remind me of a simpler time when it was possible to hang up on technology – without pushing button.

Brad Paisley’s country expands borders as good as it gets.”

He’s the closest country music has come to Norman Rockwell.

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post Country music is supposed to be about real life, and in real life, Brad Paisley is sipping Perrier.

Will we ever get to hear a Paisley lyric about French bubbles in little green bottles? This is a man who hung his star over Nashville singing about the perils of ticks, tanning beds and online dating.

So, yeah, maybe we will.

Nashville loves to agonize over what country music should and shouldn’t be, and that’s the tangled yarn ball Paisley’s been spinning on his finger for more than a decade. Of any country superstar working today, he’s the guy with the songs most intimately connected to the contemporary American experience – the blood, the sweat, the tears, the beers and everything else in the grocery bag.

He populates his lyric sheet with people who don’t normally appear in country songs, gilding their unfamiliar dramas in deeply familiar melodies.

Sometimes, there’s a political message.

More often, there’s a punch line.

“I defuse everything I can with it,” Paisley says. “Humor is such a great shield. You’re going to get flak if you tell the wrong joke, but it’s still the wrong joke. Give the wrong speech, you take it on the chin.”

That’s exactly where Paisley took it in April of last year when critics locked their ears on “Accidental Racist,” an earnest duet with rapper LL Cool J about racial healing that went wrong, then went viral. “I’m just a white man coming to you from the southland,” Paisley sings on the refrain, “trying to understand what it’s like not to be.”

The song was ridiculed by bloggers, blasted by critics, eviscerated by Stephen Colbert and parodied on “Saturday Night Live.” Then the great digital outrage machine did what it always does. It moved on to something else.

Paisley didn’t. “I’m still on a journey to learn this stuff,” the 41-year-old says, relaxing on his tour bus before a recent concert in Atlanta. “I want to hear what the professors and the pundits have to say. I had great conversations with a couple of people who were vocally upset, and I’m trying to learn what I can do better.”

As a songwriter, one of Paisley’s central themes has always been “taking pride in progress” – in America’s and, perhaps subconsciously, his own.

Accordingly, his 11th album, “Moonshine in the Trunk,” out this week, finds him bouncing back from contro-

He’s been on tour, giving the late country legend Roger Miller a run for his money as a guitarist and a cutup.

He’s been on television, serving as a judge on ABC’s latest singing game show, “Rising Star.” He’s been at home on his farm outside Nashville, soaking up time with his young sons, Huck and Jasper, and his wife, actress Kimberly Williams. And he’s been online, executing his own rogue publicity campaign, leaking songs from “Moonshine in the Trunk” on Twitter, one by one.

He calls the album “a Mason jar half-full” – which means lots of drinking songs and lots of optimism.

And while the album’s excessive sunshine might seem a little tone-deaf to anyone who’s been following the news this summer, Paisley is far from oblivious.

His music doesn’t just chronicle the America we live in. It envisions the America he wants to live in.

“Thinking, ‘Boy, are we blowing it, now’ – I don’t want to do that,” Paisley says. “I have two little boys. I want to say, ‘Here are the possibilities.’ This is the best time to be alive in the history of our country. And hopefully, this isn’t

The great art critic – and Music Row songwriting veteran – Dave Hickey had a terrific understanding of what Rockwell was really about.

“This is what [Rockwell] celebrates and insists upon: that ‘normal’ life, in this country, is not normal at all,” Hickey wrote in 1995, “that we all exist in a general state of social and physical equanimity that is unparalleled in the history of humans.” On Rockwell’s fundamental message, Hickey spelled it out: “Hey! People are different. Get used to it.”

Paisley, who embarked on his songwriting career immediately after graduating from Belmont University in Nashville in 1995, loves Rockwell, too – and he’s quick to volunteer a favorite image. He saw it hanging at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch: two janitors taking a break from mopping a theater to leaf through the playbill. “Love that one,” he says, blinking hard so he can see it on his eyelids.

It’s easy to imagine Paisley in a songwriting session, conjuring similar characters with his eyes clamped. He has a knack for singing from other perspectives, sometimes playing an opinionated narrator on the brink of a big realization.

On the new album, there’s “Gone Green” – a song penned by Paisley’s bassist, Kenny Lewis – in which a “redneck” reluctantly embraces environmentalism in a world that’s “done gone green.” On 2013’s “Those Crazy Christians,” Paisley sings from the position of a grouchy atheist willing to admit that, “If I ever really needed help, well, you know who I’d call is those crazy Christians.”

And all those ditties about the ups and downs and upside-downs of alcohol? They’re inspired by the sloshiness Paisley sees at his concerts. He doesn’t really drink.

And while the controversy over “Accidental Racist” raged almost completely outside of the country music world, it’s worth remembering that Paisley was sending that message to country fans, a bloc that’s overwhelmingly white and completely unaccustomed to being confronted with songs about race.

“I found incredible consolation in their reaction,” Paisley says, “which was, ‘Huh, I never thought about that.’”

Studies suggest link between obesity and lack of sleep Dear Doctor K: I recently saw a headline that said children who sleep less weigh more. Is that true?

Dear Reader: I believe you’re referring to a study recently published in the medical journal Pediatrics. Researchers from Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital for Children kept track of more than 1,000 children from the ages of 6 months to 7 years.

They asked mothers how much sleep their children got at the age of 6 months, 1 year, and then every year until the end of the study.

Between ages 7 and 8, researchers measured the children’s body fat and body mass index (BMI). They found that kids who were the most sleep-deprived were about 2 1/2 times as likely to be obese as those who consistently got enough sleep. They also scored higher on other measurements of body fat.

This study further confirms a link between sleep and weight.

Many previous studies have also shown that when children and adults don’t get enough sleep, it increases their risk of being overweight and having heart disease.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff These are the recommended daily amounts of sleep for young kids: 6 months to 2 years: 12 hours; 3 to 4 years: 10 hours; and 5 to 7 years: 9 hours.

Here are some ideas for improving the amount and quality of your child’s sleep: •Set and enforce a regular bedtime.

•Limit TV, especially before bedtime. The kind of light emitted by a TV can make it harder to fall asleep.

•Have soothing bedtime routines, such as bathing, quiet time and reading stories.

•Consider room-darkening curtains or a white-noise machine.

Why would sleeping less increase a child’s (or an adult’s) weight? We don’t know for sure that it does. But in recent years we’ve discovered some ways that it could. Most of the studies have been done with adults, not kids. In adults, experiments that restrict sleep to four to five hours each night lead to a fall in blood levels of the hormone

leptin.

Leptin travels in the blood, reaches the brain and has two effects. First, it decreases appetite. Second, it speeds up metabolism, which leads the body to burn more calories.

So lower-than-normal levels of leptin would increase appetite and cause the body to burn fewer calories.

Restricting sleep increases blood levels of another hormone, ghrelin. When it reaches the brain, it increases appetite – particularly an appetite for high-calorie foods.

Low blood levels of leptin and high blood levels of ghrelin are a kind of double whammy: They cause a person to consume more calories, and burn those calories less efficiently.

Sleep isn’t the only factor when it comes to childhood obesity. Along with making sure your children get enough sleep, make sure they are active for at least an hour a day. Limit sweetened drinks, and feed them a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

When a person is high on an inhalant, the behavior is almost the same as when a person is intoxicated. However inhalant use can cause serious health complications, even death. Sometimes, to get a greater amount of inhalant more quickly into their systems, users place a plastic bag over their heads. This is successful but, unfortunately, the person loses consciousness and dies from a lack of oxygen.

Others die when their lungs are coated with inhalant and oxygen cannot penetrate the gooey film, causing death.

The safest way to get high is to enjoy nature, love your family and spend time with your friends who inspire you to reach your goals.

Any substance that causes a person to alter a normal behavior should be avoided.

It’s hard enough getting through this life when our brains are functioning properly. We don’t need to have our brains “shutting down” for any reason!

Dear Abby: Five years ago, my husband got drunk and physically attacked me in front of his family. It was horrible. I was in shock, and our relationship never recovered.

The next four years were a series of court visits for custody of our child and eventually a divorce. Last year, his mother began requesting visits with our son. I was happy about it because I have tried to accommodate my ex and his family regarding our son.

Finally, late last year, I called my ex to ask if we could sit down and discuss our son.

We have met twice during the last two weeks, and each time had long conversations about everything. Many misconceptions were cleared up, and it’s obvious that we both have made many necessary changes within ourselves.

worked his entire life as a carpenter, first for 31 years for U. S. Steel on Collins Street in Joliet, and then for seven years at Collins Street Correctional Center.

He was a die hard Cubs fan and an avid sports enthusiast and gardener. He loved watching all of his grandchildren’s activities and enjoyed fishing and golfing trips with his sons and grandsons. He will be remembered for his handy work remodeling many homes in the Minooka and Channahon area.

Bill was a member of Channahon United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir for 75 years.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Donna (nee Chiovatero) McClintock; his children, Cathy (late Jerry) Glover of Minooka, Julie (Scott) Hellem of Evansville, MN, William W. (Diane) McClintock, Jr. of Braidwood, Lori (John)

McClintock of Alexandria, MN, Roseanne (Mark) Matteson of Coal City, Patty (John) Gretz of South Wilmington, and Mark (Liza) McClintock of Clearwater, MN; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, William (Rita) Chiovatero of Minooka; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and Bill and Donna’s lifelong best friends, Chy and the late Art Johnson.

Preceded by his parents; one son, Jimmy McClintock (1968), one brother, Oliver (Donna) McClintock; one sister, Wilma (Jack) Schultz; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Grace) Chiovatero.

Crime Stoppers looking for information on burglary MORRIS – Crime Stoppers of Grundy County is seeking information about a burglary that happened between Aug. 1 and Aug. 4 occurring at Grain Co F.S., 2490 W. Grand Ridge Road.

A Hustler-Super Z riding lawn mower was removed from a building on the property, according to a news release from Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Crime Stoppers line at 815942-9667. Callers may remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 are offered for information that leads to the arrest of this or any other criminal offense in Grundy County.

So it came as no surprise to Chris Harford when he heard his friends Paul and Donna Jeschke were planting a field of sweet corn to give away to those in need.

“I thought it was a great idea, not only to help people in need, but to promote agriculture,” said Harford, a member of the Grundy County Farm Bureau Young Farmers Committee. “I’m friends with the Jeschkes, and I wanted to help out in any way I could because they are friends and neighbors.”

The Jeschkes were approached by Chris and Cari Manns from The Trader’s Group a few years ago about planting a field of sweet corn that could be donated to needy families. They felt this year was the right time to help.

“It’s a good cause and it’s a small field,” Paul Jeschke said. “The opportunities just came together.”

Jeschke owns a 3.2 acre plot of farm field on Old Mazon Road, and it’s not fit to farm with his big equipment. So he reached out to others for help.

He typically plants seed corn and soybeans in his larger fields. Sweet corn is a bit more difficult to grow because it typically requires spraying for pests, he said. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the equipment for that.

“The GMO seeds made it much easier,” he said. “The crop looks very good.”

In addition to the Monsanto donation, the Jeschkes had help from other Young Farmer Committee members – Tyson Dollinger, Tim Kilmer, Jake Frobish and Nick Schaefer – as well as other farm community members.

The group gathered to harvest the field, with Dollinger driving the tractor, Jeschke working the harvester and others walking alongside to pick up any corn that didn’t make it into the awaiting basket.

Agencies making slow progress on aqueduct restoration

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Walking down the I&M Canal towpath, it’s hard to forget the Nettle Creek aqueduct is broken.

The loss of the structure has visibly altered the local landscape. Downtown, canal water sits stagnant, covered in a thick layer of green moss.

At Gebhard Woods, weeds have replaced water in the ponds, dried up months ago.

For years, the historic aqueduct carried canal waters over the Nettle Creek, but it was destroyed during the disastrous floods of April 2013.

Pressure from the rising water caused the structure to collapse.

“West of the creek is dried, and east of the creek is completely stagnant because the water isn’t flowing off of it as it did,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

More than a year after the flood, sections of the towpath remain closed and no visible progress has been made on the aqueduct’s restoration.

But behind the scenes, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Federal Emergency Management Agency – with input from several local agencies – have drafted a project plan now under federal review.

According to information from FEMA representative Cassie Ringsdorf, IDNR is proposing to demolish and replace the aqueduct.

The Grundy County Historical Society dates the original aqueduct to 1845 to 1848, but the structure was repaired and restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, according to IDNR. As a historical landmark, law requires engineers use as

The National Park Service, City of Morris, Canal Corridor Association and other private parties have signed a memorandum of agreement supporting the proposed project.

Aside from the changes in scenery, Kopczick said pedestrian traffic through Morris has decreased since the aqueduct’s decay.

uninterrupted for miles, all the way from Channahon to Buffalo Rock in Ottawa.

But today, a large section near the aqueduct is closed, forcing pedestrians to find alternate routes.

“It’s greatly reduced the amount of pedestrian traffic through the city of Morris,” he said. “You can’t make that trip because there’s a break in the path. There’s no easy way to get to one side to the other.”

The move out of Pioneer Path would save the district a few hundred thousand dollars a year on overhead costs alone, at least one board member estimates. Evans said she believes leasing out the space would not be difficult. She knows of at least two area organizations looking for such a site.

Evans presented the board with two possible consolidation options, both phasing Pioneer Path out by the 201617 school year. One plan adds third grade to N.B. Galloway School and adds fourth grade to Three Rivers School. Channahon Junior High School would remain with two grades.

The other option involves keeping Galloway as is, changing Three Rivers from fifth and sixth grades to grades third through fifth, and adding sixth grade to the junior high.

Superintendent search Evans is set to retire June 30, 2015, and the school board will begin searching for her replacement this fall. Members discussed whether to hire a search firm to find and vet candidates.

The cost of hiring a search firm, Evans said, would be at least $10,000 to $15,000, but a firm would help the board set its priorities.

Board member Joan Ferguson said she thought the board could do the search on its own, and Jim Bogacz thought an initial job posting might produce qualified candidates. But in the end, the majority settled on hiring a firm.

Evans said she would present three search agencies to the board for interviews.

Once a search firm identifies candidates, the school board will conduct candidate interviews. A group of one or more teachers, principals, paraprofessionals and community members would also provide input.

Evans said potential candidates from Will County have already expressed interest.

The future of Pioneer Path, as well as the search for a new school superintendent, were discussed at a school board work session Monday.` The board is looking at the possibility of closing Pioneer Path for the 2016-17 school year.

District enrollment has steadily declined for a few years and the trend is expected to continue. The board has discussed withdrawing students from Pioneer Path and operating only three schools.

Schuler leaves Morris for the winter, so she works at the beginning of the school year until she leaves. She returns to work when she comes home.

She likes choosing her own hours. She works two days a week from 8 a.m. to noon most days.

While Schuler doesn’t mind the paycheck, she said she’d work even if she wasn’t paid.

“I love helping. It’s so rewarding,” she said. “They are very appreciative. The work is easy, and it doesn’t take much.”

MORRIS – Connie Schuler of Morris read about the Seniors Supporting School program several years ago and thought it sounded like something she’d be interested in.

Since then, she has helped first-grade students at White Oak with their reading.

“I listen to them read and help with their sounds,” Schuler said. “I’ve even helped make s’mores in the classroom.”

Through the Seniors Supporting School program, district residents who are age 60 and older work at the schools for minimum wage and can earn up to the amount they pay in property taxes annually to District 54.

“We learned about the program during a conference and implemented it in our district the following year,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

“It works well. Any time you get the chance to add another helping hand to the classroom, everyone benefits having an extra ear, extra hands and an extra heart in class.”

Shaw said a bond is created between the seniors and the students. It’s this bond that Schuler said provides her the greatest reward.

“When they recognize you outside of the school and they stop to tell you ‘Hi,’ it’s really cool. They also give hugs, which I enjoy,” Schuler said.

Shaw said the schools try to find the best fit for the seniors, learning about what interests them and putting them in places where they can make the biggest difference. Some have been crossing guards.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Cyberbullying is becoming an increasingly dangerous threat, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

And as kids often surpass their parents in using Internet-driven applications, such as smartphones and social media, it’s becoming more important for parents to know how to spot cyberbullying.

That’s why Helland and the Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force are hosting an anti-bullying forum at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 in the auditorium at Morris Community High School.

“In my opinion, there has been an increase as far as complaints about issues happening in c y b e r s p a c e , ” Jason Helland said. Helland “It’s an issue that the schools are dealing with daily, as well as law enforcement.”

Paula Goodwin, who is with the task force, said meetings with school principals and counselors have yielded discussions about bullying.

Jonathan D. Taller, 29, of 2910 N. Country Oak Lane in Morris, was arrested on drug and reckless endangerment charges in Wisconsin after he allegedly almost hit three officers with a car Aug. 16. about 3:45 a.m.

Taller did not get out of the car after repeated requests at gunpoint, according to the reports. When Somerset Police Officer Brian Edwards went to open the door to apprehend Taller, Taller put the vehicle in reverse and crashed into a squad car behind him.

The facility manufactures low density polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene and propylene. The facility discharges treated process and sanitary wastewater, cooling water and raw water to the Illinois River.

The facility also discharges treated process wastewater, stormwater, wash water, raw water and groundwater to Aux Sable Creek.

Any interested person may submit written request for a public hearing on the draft permit, stating their name and address, the nature of the issues proposed to be raised and the evidence proposed to be presented with regards to these issues in the hearing. MORRIS – A Morris man was arrested at a music festival in Wisconsin after authorities said he tried to run down three police officers as they pursued him.

Jonathan D. Taller, 29, of 2910 N. Country Oak Lane, was charged by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department with three counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety, one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, and one count of possession with intent to deliver more than 50 grams of a Schedule I controlled substance.

He also was charged with his second offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and resisting an officer.

All the alleged offenses took place during the Summer Set Music and Camping Festival on Aug. 16 in Somerset, Wisconsin.

In a police report first reported on and provided to the Morris Daily Herald by the New Richmond-News, police allege Taller was in his car when he was approached by several officers attempting to take a male subject into custody on drug-related charges at

volleyball court 40 yards away.

Taller attempted to free the car, but the car’s wheels spun deeper into the sand.

Edwards caught up to the vehicle with the other officers and used a collapsible baton to break the front driver’s side window. He confronted Taller at gunpoint and Taller parked the car and surrendered.

Taller was handcuffed and searched. No weapons were found. But small bags he was carrying contained a white rock substance and baggies with a white powdery substance. He appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and told police several times “he was high.”

He was transported to Westfields Hospital in New Richmond, Wisconsin, to complete a legal blood draw kit before being booked into the St. Croix County Jail, where he remained in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

A search in the vehicle Taller was driving yielded dozens of bags with a white powdery substance and crystals, more than $5,000 in cash, and several used glass pipes, among other items identifying Taller.

No injuries were reported at the scene or at the tent Taller ran over.
