Schools cope with high heat

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Ruth Lines died in July 2013, her family asked donations be made to Immaculate Conception School in her honor.

The idea was the $2,500 donation would buy something permanent for the school.

Students reaped the benefits of that donation Monday, as temperatures reached 89 degrees with high humidity, making the day feel much warmer.

The donation in honor of Ruth purchased five of the 10 air conditioners installed in the school last spring.

“Every year about this time we talk about air conditioning.

The school was built in 1962 and has never had it, other than a couple of newer rooms,” Principal Kim DesLauriers said. “In six weeks they won’t be on, but right now we are grateful for them.”

In the past, the school has opened windows and run fans to cool classrooms.

OBITUARIES WILMA J. WINSOR Born: June 16, 1935 Died: Aug. 24, 2014 Wilma J. “Billie” Winsor, 79, of Morris, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2014.

Born in Morris on June 16, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Ronald and Catherine (Horrie) Belt. Billie was raised and educated in Morris.

In 1952, she married Lyle “Duke” Winsor in Morris. He preceded her in death in 2011. They farmed for over 40 years in Norman and Vienna Townships.

She was employed for over 25 years for Dr. John Roth and the Morris Medical Group. Billie had many interests: she was an avid reader, enjoyed cake decorating and gardening, loved to sing, and was artistic and a self-taught dec-

Heat changes activities Morris Community High School students have air conditioning in their rooms, but not in the field house, which houses physical education classes.

Superintendent Pat Halloran said physical education met in the auditorium instead Monday. They planned to treat the period as a study hall because of the high temperatures.

“The field house floor also gets slippery when we have such high humidity, so for the safety of the children, we don’t hold it there,” Halloran said.

Coal City Unit District 1, Morris Elementary School District 54 and the Morris Chiefs football team and cheerleaders canceled afternoon practice because of the extreme heat.

football players were told to come to practice in helmets only, instead of pads, to help students during practice.

Storms keep pool closed The city of Morris had planned to open the Morris pool Monday evening to give people a chance to cool off, but early evening thunderstorms rolled in, causing them to stay closed.

“We wanted to offer some folks the opportunity to chill out,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Pool Manager Jim Hitchcock said staff were at the pool ready to open when thunder started, causing the facility to stay closed.

Kopczick said the pool typically closes as schools go back in session, since many of the lifeguards are students, and the manager works as a teacher.

But after seeing the forecast Sunday, enough lifeguards were pulled together to add an extra evening.

The National Weather Service forecasts a chance of storms each day through Friday, with a high today of 86 degrees, Wednesday and Thursday of 79 and Friday of 82.

Street in Morris. A Celebration of Billie’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Morris with Pastor Steve Larson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Billie’s name to Grundy Community Hospice or to First Baptist Church of Morris.

Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

CENTURY OF FARMING Grundy County Farm Bureau gives voice to area farmers, aids community

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For 100 years, the Grundy County Farm Bureau has provided service to the community, and Saturday night, members celebrated its anniversary on a farm owned by Terry and Carol Seggebruch.

“In 1914, 11 men came together out of their desire to improve farming practices in Grundy County,” farm bureau President Steve Kodat said Saturday. “They came together to prevent deadly livestock diseases and to have a voice in government regulations affecting farms.”

Farm bureau Manager Tasha Bunting said the organization wanted to host a celebration to remind the community of its involvement here, and to celebrate its history.

The celebration started Saturday morning with an old-fashioned tractor drive, with 34 tractors making their way from the Seggebruch farm to downtown Morris.

The weather held out long enough for the tractors to make it to Morris and be on display around the courthouse for a little while before heading back to the farm for lunch.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness 5K runners honor family lost by disease

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Stewart Hipes first ran in the Ovarian Cancer Awareness 5K in August 2012, six months after he lost his mother, Evelyn Hipes, to ovarian cancer.

“After I ran in 2012, I told my family that next time we all need to run in honor of mom,” Hipes said.

On Saturday morning, Hipes was joined by three sisters and one brother, as well as nieces, great-nieces and a great-nephew to take to the pavement in honor of his mom.

“We decided to wear mom’s favorite color, red,” he said.

“I know that goes against the ovarian cancer awareness color, teal. We thought, let’s do this for mom. She would look down and be smiling; this would make her day.”

After losing her mother after a 14-month battle with ovarian cancer in January 2005, Corri Trotter worked diligently to share the symptoms of ovarian cancer with others.

To raise ovarian cancer awareness, Trotter hosted the third “Running for Life” Ovarian Cancer Awareness 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday in Morris.

“We decided to wear mom’s favorite color, red,” he said. “I know that goes against the ovarian cancer awareness color, teal. We thought, let’s do this for mom. She would look down and be smiling; this would make her day.”

“It went well. The numbers were low but the temperatures were high,” Trotter said. “We had 152 participants, which is down a bit, but we also took last year off.”

This year, she changed the location from White Oak Elementary School to Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, 2400 Richie Road, Morris.

“People liked the location and the course, so we plan to hold it there again next year,” she said.

one of six kids and I wanted to thank her for all she did for me. So I ran and talked to her.”

Hosting the run isn’t just a way to raise money. Trotter wants to raise awareness, hoping it may save someone’s life.

“I want people to be aware of the symptoms because they are often overlooked,” Trotter said. “Chances of survival

are slimmer if it is not caught early.”

Ovarian cancer symptoms include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, feeling the need to urinate urgently or often, fatigue, upset stomach or heartburn, back pain, pain during sex, constipation or menstrual changes.

Three Rivers hosts talk on Alzheimer’s Learn 10 warning signs of disease MORRIS DAILY HERALD MINOOKA – Learn the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease at Three Rivers Public Library District’s Minooka Branch on Sept. 9.

An associate from the Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will separate myth from reality and address commonly held fears about Alzheimer’s in America starting at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at the library branch, 109 N. Wabena Ave., Minooka.

Attendees will hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. There also will be a question and answer session after the program.

Warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. Early detection gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future.

Story behind the fairy tale The Three Rivers Public Library District presents “Grimm’s Grimmest: The Darker Side of Fairy Tales” from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30.

Professional storyteller Judith Heineman and musician Daniel Marcotte will offer a chilling dramatic performance of several Grimm tales, some set to music, as they were originally intended for adults.

This program is free and open to the public, though the stories are recommended for ages 10 and up. Due to limited seating, registration is required.

More than 3,000 attend annual event despite early rain, storms

“I was set to bring down my 2014 Camaro, but I don’t let it get wet and wasn’t about to take a chance,” said Darryl Markson of Morris. He still made the trip, only in his wife’s car.

The low attendance didn’t keep the event from a profitable and positive ending, according to members of the Cruise Nite Committee. More than 3,000 attendees took part.

“The rain definitely kept people away, but all the vendors were happy to be here and we want to keep this event alive in the coming years,” Hamilton said.

SENECA – Thunder, rain and the rumble of unique automobiles accompanied the annual Seneca Prairie Shipyard Cruise Nite on Saturday.

Heavy rain moved through the area in the morning, with clouds breaking in the late afternoon.

As the sun peeked from behind the clouds, cars began filing down Main Street toward their designated positions.

The slow trickle was narrated

by Jim Stuckey of 3-D Sound Company.

Stuckey announced the make and model of each car entering, promoting the various causes raising money through the event.

As Main Street filled with an array of exotic modes of transportation, families made their way through downtown, socializing and catching up on the closing summer’s excitement.

“It’s really become a huge social event for members of the community,” Seneca Public Property Commissioner Gary Hamilton said. “People get a chance to get out of the house and talk to one another as well as support the many local organizations who use the opportunity to raise funding.”

All the vendors present at Cruise Nite were local nonprofit organizations, Hamilton said. Several tents lining the street offered goodies, such as hand-squeezed lemonade and a “walking taco,” offered by the Seneca chapter of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority.

People of all ages remained in the streets as the sun set and the raffle drawing was completed. Charlene Wienrich of Seneca walked away with a cash prize of $2,500. More than 50 door prizes also were given away. Half were distributed at random based on car numbers, while the others were chosen based on correct answers to trivia questions.

Fair fun unfazed by rain Monthly activity moved inside during storms

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Park Pointe Senior Living residents spent only a few minutes outdoors with their friends and family Saturday at the Old Fashioned Fair before the clouds let loose.

The band Hit or Miss quickly packed up and left; the pie-eating contest was canceled; and the ring toss, Bozo buckets and pluck-the-duck children’s games were disassembled.

But the fun continued inside. Staff still offered burgers and hot dogs, snow cones and cotton candy, a bake sale, miniflea market and a magician.

The day was set aside for good times for residents and their guests. Such activities are offered every month or so, according to Park Pointe’s Marketing Director Peg Spear.

“It’s to give our residents a nice opportunity to have their families in and to show them the spirit of our community and what it’s all about,” Spear said.

“Every month, we bring in entertainment and events.”

Spear said the rain and lightning dampened the day a little, but the event was still successful.

“Everybody was here enjoying their meals under the tent,” she said. “Then Mother Nature intruded. But we’re not daunted.”

Jerry Pfeifer had several friends and family over Saturday, including Lou Witt from Mazon. Pfeifer has lived at Park Pointe since it opened five years ago. She started there with her husband Mike in a one-bedroom apartment. When he died, she moved into a smaller one.

She said she was enjoying visiting with her guests at the fair and wished the rain would have held off.

“I was so disappointed that we had to come inside,” Pfeifer said. “It was so nice out there.”

She said she likes living at the facility.

“Every day there’s something,” she said. “We go to the grocery store or to Pizza Hut. ... We went to Starved Rock last fall, and we went to Brookfield

Zoo last spring. And we have an excellent library.”

Sylvia Randolph manned the flea market spread out on tables in one of the hallways Saturday. She had moved into the facility one week earlier.

“I’m really trying to get involved in things here,” she said.

“Ten years ago when I first looked at something like this, I just wasn’t ready.”

A former Joliet resident, Randolph said her daughter lives in Morris. She loves the residence’s offerings, especially Monday and Friday bingo games.

Park Pointe resident Lorraine Welter had nine family members visit Saturday. She also loves the celebrations the facility holds.

“I go to almost all of them,” she said. “They have all kinds of things. The kids really like it.”

“We lucked out with the weather,” Bunting said. “We only lost one tractor due to mechanical issues. We’re very happy with the first attempt at hosting a tractor drive.”

Frank Halpin, a farm bureau board member, said the bureau’s legislative action working toward farmer’s rights often gets overlooked.

“The farm bureau is more important today than it was in the past,” Halpin said. “We’ve participated in ‘Ag in the Classroom’ for over 35 years.

You used to ask if the children had relatives on a farm and a large number said yes. It’s rare that they have farmers in their family now.”

MARSEILLES – Operators at LaSalle County Generating Station declared an “usual event” at 8:12 a.m.

Monday due to a faulty fire alarm that activated. The event was terminated within an hour.

Operators verified there was no fire and deactivated the alarm within 20 minutes, according to a news release from the station.

The fire detector will be replaced.

Both units continue to operate at full power.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations require operators to terminate a fire alarm within 15 minutes or designate the activation of an “unusual event.”

An unusual event is the lowest emergency level in the NRC’s emergency classification system.

Station personnel notified all appropriate federal, state and local government officials.

MORRIS – The Globe of Death riders and the “Smallest Elephant in the World” are among attractions coming to town Sept. 8 when the Carson & Barnes Circus arrives.

The big top, family-owned circus of 78 years has scheduled a pair of two-hour shows at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, 8890 N. Illinois Route 47.

“We have a traditional circus under the big top,” owner Barbara Miller-Byrd said.

“We think, if you don’t have a big top and elephant, you aren’t a true circus.”

Tickets can be bought for a reduced price of $14 a adult and $8 a child at www.carsonbarnescircus.com before Sept.

8. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of the circus for an extra $2 each ticket.

Using a downloadable coupon, one child can enter free for each adult ticket purchased.

The circus will include traditional attractions such

as clowns, acrobats, jugglers, rides, popcorn and animals.

But the show’s centerpiece is the Carson & Barnes Asian elephants.

Performances include Flying Cavallini’s “Smallest Elephant in the World,” Rosales Family Juggling Legend, Masters of Magic and Illusion, Canine Capers, Equines of Excellence featuring Appaloosa Stallions. Arial Ballot, Teenage Singing Sensations and the Spectacular Ponderous Pachyderms.

The newest addition is the Globe of Death riders, who drive their motorcycles around and upside down inside a big metal globe.

The circus previously performed in Morris in August of 2012.

It also came in 2007, 2005 and 2001.

“Morris has historically been a good place for us,” Miller-Byrd said. “We like a community that enjoys wholesome family entertainment.

It’s a good all-American city with lots of families.”

LyondellBasell conducts safety drill MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – LyondellBasell recently conducted a full-scale incident responsiveness training drill at its Morris Complex.

More than 150 first responders from the company and 14 other agencies and organizations participated in the training exercise, which simulated how responders would effectively manage a tornado touchdown at the plant, according to a news release from the company.

“This type of training is crucial for building a strong relationship with local first responders. LyondellBasell has a world-class safety culture and routine emergency training showcases that commitment,” Morris Complex site manager Brian Angwin said in the news release. “Working side by side with a variety of emergency responders, this type of training also provides invaluable experience for everyone to better ensure the safety of our workers and the community.”

Support for wage hike may up voter turnout A recent Chicago Tribune poll result appears to indicate support for raising the minimum wage in the state’s largest city may be enough to increase voter turnout for a non-binding November ballot referendum.

The poll found 84 percent of registered Chicago voters support a city task force recommendation to increase the minimum wage to $13 an hour over the next three years.

According to the poll, 78 percent of whites and 92 percent of African-Americans and even 71 percent of Chicagoans making more than $100,000 a year back the plan.

Democrats have been hoping to use the statewide non-binding referendum to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour as a tool to help spur turnout in what is rapidly developing into a big Republican year. And with numbers like the Tribune’s backing a much higher minimum wage, it does seem likely the issue can be effective, particularly among African-Americans.

Support above 70 to 80 percent is generally seen as having a ballot impact. Get above 90 and it’s sure to drive votes.

Then again, the comparatively “stingy” state ballot proposal, when compared to the Chicago proposal, might garner lesser enthusiasm.

Proponents are hoping to use the issue to convince 400,000 people to sign “pledge cards” stating they will definitely vote this November. So far, they’ve collected 70,000 cards, which they will use to track the signatories through Election Day. The bigger question, however, is what Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan does with all the money he’s been raising to push the ballot initiative. Madigan, who also

Everybody who chipped in to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in 2012 is being paid a visit. Labor unions alone spent more than $20 million on that race, and Madigan is telling those labor leaders they can spend the money now to defeat the anti-union Bruce Rauner, or spend the money later to fight Rauner after he’s elected.

The Republicans are attempting to convince themselves that Madigan will spend that cash on his hottest state legislative races instead of in Chicago and south suburban Cook County, where it would do the most good for the statewide ticket because of high numbers of African-Americans. Democrats have often complained in the past that “coordinated campaign” money has been redirected to Madigan’s legislative races, and they’re not sure what he’ll do this year.

Most are fairly certain Madigan won’t have his candidates run away from the top of the ticket. The Speaker tried that in 1994, during a huge Republican wave. Late in the game, photos of Republican Gov. Jim Edgar started appearing in Democratic legislative mailers. But that backfired in a major way. It just helped Edgar win by a larger margin, which swept away Madigan’s candidates. Madigan has to do whatever he can to boost Gov. Pat Quinn’s prospects within his districts, and that means lots of voter registration and get out the vote activities. And none of

those all important districts are in Chicago or south suburban Cook County.

But it won’t be easy. I’ve seen some private polling results recently show Quinn doing even worse than expected in suburban counties where Madigan has some other tough races. My own polling has shown Bruce Rauner doing quite well in suburban Cook County, which has trended Democratic over the years and will be the scene of several hotly contested Illinois House races.

And, the other day, a top Democratic strategist derided the Quinn campaign’s attempt to convince Illinoisans that the job and economic situation is starting to turn around as “stupid.”

“They’re telling voters not to believe their own lying eyes,” he complained. Focus groups, he said, are finding voters “are so mad at the state of things that it insults their intelligence to tell them things are changing, especially in the Downstate communities.”

The Democrat had knowledge of one particular Downstate congressional focus group which found people were “openly hostile to Quinn – like punch him if he was in the room at the time hostile.” Madigan has one Tier One contest in that congressional district and another adjacent to the district.

So, keep an eye on Chicago and south suburban Cook County “get out the vote” efforts. It’s Gov. Quinn’s best hope right now and a likely drain on Madigan’s resources.

If he spends lots of cash there, Quinn just might make this thing a close one.

Morris impresses in scrimmage Coaches, referees applaud team’s discipline after intrasquad game

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – All things considered, Morris football coach Alan Thorson thought of Friday night’s intrasquad game was a success. The Redskins were able to run through some plays in front of a crowd of fans in the stands, and no one got hurt.

“It all went well,” Thorson said. “We had no injuries, and I felt like we looked real good on the field.”

With as many returning players as Morris has this year – seven on offense and six on defense – one would expect the club to look pretty sharp. Looks can be deceiving, but Thorson was more than pleased with the look of things when he viewed the tape of the practice.

“We looked at the film,” Thorson said. “And honestly, we did look good. Last year, we looked at the film and spent two hours going over things with the kids the next day. This year, we looked at the film and we looked real sharp and gave them the day off from practice Saturday.”

Not only were the Redskin coaches impressed with the returning starters, there were several newcomers to the varsity who put forth some impressive performances.

Thorson said juniors Joey and Jacob Webb played well at wide receiver, and running back Tommy Balentine showed good speed. Thorson also was impressed with sophomore Keagan Sobol’s showing at linebacker and fullback, where he split time with senior Matt Feiden.

“We expected our returning guys to put on a good show,” Thorson said. “We were really impressed with a lot of the younger guys, too. Those were the guys we were really keeping a closer eye on, and they did real well.”

“The officials actually complimented us on how well-disciplined a team we are,” Thorson said. “They pointed out some things that are going to be points of emphasis this

year, like targeting and other things; but penalty-wise, we really came out of the scrimmage pretty clean.

“That’s definitely something you like to see coming out of a scrimmage like this one. We

cleaned up a lot of things that hurt us last year in that respect.

Now, we have to continue to do that when the season starts for real.”

Morris starts the season for real Friday night when the Redskins travel to Minooka.

The Indians beat the Redskins last year, 21-14, marking their first win in the series since 2000, and the first time ever that they won in Morris. The next week sees Morris hosts perennial downstate power Metamora, which the Redskins defeated, 17-14, last year.

Thorson also was pleased with the public turnout for the scrimmage, as it let the team

get the feel of playing in front of a crowd.

“It’s nice to get these kids in front of a big group of fans,” he said. “They have been working so hard all off-season, and to have people cheering for them again was real nice.”

The players enjoyed that aspect of it as well.

“We have lifted weights and practiced all alone since last season ended,” senior captain Robbie Meucci said. “It’s nice to get out on the field in front of the town of Morris. That’s what this is all about.

“But, we’re ready to stop hitting each other and hit someone with another colored jersey.”

Morris QB Club hosts annual Kickoff event Live auction, raffle helps raise money for football team

By CRAIG LINCOLN Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Morris Redskin Football Quarterback Club hosted its seventh annual Kickoff at the Morris Moose Lodge on Saturday. The Kickoff dinner featured a raffle, draw down, live auction, silent auction, beanbag toss and apparel sales. The picnic is the Quarterback Club’s best opportunity to raise funds for the team.

Dozens of volunteers and businesses support the Quarterback Club all year. The Morris Warriors Youth Football presented a check for $500 to the Quarterback Club. Many of the Warriors go on the play for the Redskins. Shawn Hornsby auctioned off everything from donated signs and Bulls tickets to autographed photos and footballs.

Quarterback Club president Ed Hansen explained why he volunteers.

“For me I guess it was never a question of, ‘Would I volunteer?’ ” he said. “If I were given the opportunity to bring

something positive to a great organization like the Morris Redskin football team, I would not hesitate. It has helped to be surrounded by like-minded people who share that same feeling of pride and will do what they can to continue that tradition.”

Last year the Quarterback Club provided weights, stencils for field painting and other equipment costing just over $7,000, in addition to awards to Mason Dryfhout and Dalton Ness. The club also organizes pizza parties, spaghetti dinners, sideline chain gangs and provides Coach buses for away games. The Quarterback Club hopes to raise just as much this year.

Morris head coach Alan Thorson appreciates the support.

“I talk to a lot of other coaches but other schools do not always have a booster group that is as involved. It makes my job a lot easier. They really give back to this program.”

Redskins senior quarterback Griffin Sobol, one of the team’s four captains, also appreciates

the backing of the community.

“The football kickoff is a great event for the Morris football team,” he said. “This year was very well run by a great group of parents, and we are all very thankful for their commitment to our team.”

This year’s theme is Old Tradition, New Attitude, and will be featured on a new T-shirt for the opening game at Minooka.

Another new T-shirt design in Vegas Gold will be available at home games.

As to this year, Coach Thorson said, “This has been one of the best offseasons I can remember. Last year was humbling and we have learned from it.

Now is the time to see the results on the field.”

Sobol summed it up in his own way.

“I think that our team’s potential is unlimited,” he said.

“We need to keep this intensity and attitude for the next 14 weeks and very good things will happen.”

The Morris Redskins will open the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Minooka.

MORRIS – Eddie Hoffman battled Larry Schuler for second place for most of the Late Model feature Friday at Grundy County Speedway.

Hoffman finally pulled clear of Schuler with nine laps remaining, then chased down leader Chris Cooling and passed him with four laps left en route to claiming the victory.

Cooling settled for second, followed by points leader Ricky Baker, Schuler, John Nutley and Mark Sontag Jr. Baker set the fast time, and Cooling and Ron Vandermeir Jr. won heats.

Tom Knippenberg captured his ninth Mid-American feature of the season and is headed toward his second straight track title. John Ventrello finished a distant second, followed by Josh

Nelms, Joe Vinachi, Kenny Benson and Luke Baldwin.

Ventrello and Cody Clubb won heats, and Knippenberg set the fast time.

Points leader Eddie Ligue won his sixth street stocks feature of the season after leading most of the way. Fast qualifier Jack Bradley was second, followed by Josh Nelms, Bob Davis, Timmy Stewart and Peter Hernandez. Ligue and Logan Love won heats.

Pure stocks points leader Austin Blackwell survived a late challenge from Zach Sontag to win the feature, his second victory of the season. Following Blackwell and Sontag were Mikey Slabenak, Dan Schmeissing, Justin Mikel and Jim Gross.

Notre Dame grad’s attention to detail, strong work ethic win job

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – For all of the offensive uncertainty regarding backup battles at running back and receiver, the Bears confirmed Sunday what we’ve expected to hear since early in training camp – Jimmy Clausen will be the No. 2 quarterback behind Jay Cutler.

Clausen’s arrival in early June, after the Bears had held three of five offseason training activities, was the first sign they weren’t set on thenNo. 2 Jordan Palmer, part of the club’s first wave of cuts Sunday.

The former Notre Dame standout and second-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2010, Clausen’s edge over Palmer in terms of physical tools was evident from the first time he stepped on the practice field. His passes had more accuracy and zip, and his footwork and mobility in the pocket were much smoother.

One of the few questions Clausen needed to answer was how quickly he’d grasp the offense.

Coach Marc Trestman reiterated Monday that Clausen’s attention to detail and strong work ethic to quickly grasp the playbook impressed him.

Trestman pointed to not only Clausen’s youth and experience – at 26, Clausen is four years younger than Palmer and has started 13 NFL games compared to none by Palmer – but the way he handled adversity early in his career as positives that convinced Trestman that Clausen was the right choice.

“I think the upside for Jimmy, his age, his experience and he came highly recommended from some people I trust in Carolina,” said Trestman of the key factors in making his decision. “His ability to handle the adversity that he had in his first year, his

One of those teammates, tight end Dante Rosario, agreed with Trestman’s assessment. He noted not only Clausen’s growth as a passer, but his football character and mental strength after a lot of the blame for a 2-14 season was levied in his direction as reasons he has so much respect for Clausen.

“When you have a season like that, you find out guys that really love playing football and guys that aren’t in it for that,” Rosario said.

“It’s not just improvement on the field but also as a leader.

Clearly he stuck with it, persevered, and he’s come out so much stronger because of it.”

As Josh McCown proved last season, when he parlayed his dynamite relief role into a multi-year contract and starting chance in Tampa Bay, being Cutler’s backup and learning under Trestman can lead to bigger things.

But from rookie starter to clipboard holder, then out of the league altogether last year to now being one big hit on Cutler away from starting, Clausen is happy the coaches have placed confidence in him, but his journey getting here helps shape his perspective.

“You have clarity that you’re the No. 2 guy,” Clausen said. “But it doesn’t change my mindset, … go out each and every day and prepare.”

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Every year at this time for the past decade, I put my movie ducks in a row and make a wish list of what I’d like to see – for work and pleasure – at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It’s the biggest fest in North America that’s open to members of the film industry, the press and the public.

If you love movies, get yourself to the sprawling city of Toronto, where TIFF runs from Sept. 4-14. Among the 393 films being shown on 28 different screens, there are features, shorts, world premieres and a couple of old classics. There’s also the chance of getting a glimpse of or spending a chat session with actors, directors, writers and producers from around the planet. TIFF is a world-class festival that runs the gamut of the movie-going experience. There will be films from major studios that will open in a few weeks but can be seen here first. There are independent features galore, some of which will open in theaters over the next few months, while others – even if they’re deemed terrific by some viewers – will go straight to disc or the stream, or never be heard from again.

In the years I’ve attended, I’ve had to see some films because interviews with filmmakers were set up in advance. But I’ve always made time to check out some titles I’ve never heard of, that I might not get to see on a big screen anywhere else.

I’ve only carved out enough time to be at TIFF for six days this year, and some interviews are already planned. For my “spare time,” I made an initial list of 61 films that looked promising, then, for reasons of maintaining sanity, carved that number down to 33. Well, even that ain’t gonna happen, but here’s a brief preview of the 15 that are calling out my name, and that I will make my priority.

Mark Schultz (Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum), and a road to murder.

“Hector and the Search for Happiness” – Sometimes funny, mostly serious, this tells of a psychiatrist (Simon Pegg) who, unable to properly explain “happiness” to some of his patients, sets off on a journey to find out what it really is.

“A Little Chaos” – Alan Rickman directs and stars as Louis XIV, for whom a female landscaper (Kate Winslet) is hired to design the royal gardens at Versailles.

“Love & Mercy” – Paul Dano plays the young Brian Wilson, John Cusack plays the older Brian Wilson, and Paul Giamatti played Dr. Eugene Landy, the controversial quack who played with the Beach Boy’s already messedup head.

“Maps to the Stars” – Emotional problems haunt a Hollywood family (as does a possible ghost) in David Cronenberg’s psychological study of the pursuit of celebrity and escape from the past.

“Men, Women and Children” – Director Jason Reitman looks at contemporary love lives in stories featuring high school teens and their parents, and how social media

has complicated and changed everything.

“Mr. Turner” – Timothy Spall won the coveted Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of the brilliant (and a bit crazy) British Landscape artist J.M.W. Turner. Directed

by Mike Leigh.

“Nightcrawler” – Busy screenwriter Dan Gilroy (“The Bourne Legacy,” “The Fall”) gets his first directing credit in this study of a freelance writer (Jake Gyllenhaal) who gets caught up in a nasty L.A. crime scene.

“Rosewater” – Remember when “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart took some time off a while back? It was to direct this film about a journalist who was imprisoned in Iran, partly due to an appearance he made on Stewart’s show.

“Tusk” – It’s Kevin Smith’s newest film. I’ve decided to print verbatim what it says on the Internet Movie Data Base: “A man is captured by a maniac and tortured, physically and mentally, into becoming a walrus.”

ADVICE New life for ring from broken engagement Time to talk to parents Dear Abby: I was engaged several years ago, but the engagement didn’t last. We broke up and I gave him back his ring. We remain close friends, however, and hang out at least once a week.

I have been dating another guy for a couple of years, and we’re thinking about getting engaged.

I am wondering if it would be improper to ask my ex if we could buy my old ring from him. It was – and still is – my “dream ring,” and I know my ex has kept it in the glove box of his car ever since I gave it back to him.

‘Advanced’ cholesterol testing can be useful for some Dear Doctor K: Should I request “advanced” cholesterol testing at my next checkup?

Dear Reader: A standard cholesterol test, or lipid profile, measures levels of HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. So-called “advanced” cholesterol testing is a more detailed version of this test. Cholesterol is a waxy, yellowish fat. It travels through your bloodstream in tiny, protein-covered particles called lipoproteins. These particles contain cholesterol and triglycerides, a type of fat.

The smallest and densest particles are high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Also known as “good” cholesterol, HDL removes cholesterol from artery walls.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles are known as “bad” cholesterol. They add cholesterol to the artery walls. There, it creates artery-clogging plaque that can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Most doctors use LDL levels to predict heart attack risk.

But many people with heart disease have LDL levels that aren’t especially high. It turns out that not all LDL particles are created equal. Larger, fluffier LDL particles may have a harder time getting into arteries. Smaller, more tightly packed LDL may have an

And a particular protein on LDL – apoB – further increases heart disease risk. Advanced cholesterol tests measure LDL sub-particles as well as apoB. My colleague Dr. Jorge Plutzky is director of the Lipid/Prevention Clinic and co-director of Preventive Cardiology at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He says that for the average person, the additional detail from advanced lipid testing isn’t critical. It wouldn’t change the treatment a doctor would have otherwise recommended. Why does he say that? Because there are plenty of new tests that have theoretical value in determining a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke. But they should be considered standard, generally recommended tests only if they actually make the prediction of risk more accurate.

For a new test to become standard, it needs to be used along with standard tests in thousands of people. Those people then are

followed for many years. Some will develop heart disease or have a stroke, and some will not. The standard tests, since they’ve already been proven, will do a good job. While they won’t be perfect, they will identify people who are more likely to develop disease.

But will the new test, when added to the standard tests, make that prediction even more accurate?

That’s what has to be shown for doctors to use the new test.

Dr. Plutzky thinks that advanced cholesterol testing might help to better understand heart disease risk in certain groups of people. These include people with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) without obvious risk factors (such as high blood pressure or diabetes); a history of CVD before age 55 in men or before age 65 in women; and a parent or sibling with early heart disease.Whatever you decide about the test, don’t forget triedand-true strategies for lowering heart disease risk. These include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. Wallace: I had a really bad year at school last year because two boys called me names and hit me every day.

They made me give them my lunch money every day and threatened to beat me up every day after school if I told anyone.

They said nobody would believe me if I told on them because they would say that I made it up. I hated going to school and I was happy when summer vacation was here.

But now I am just dreading when summer ends and I’ll be going back to school again.

As a former high school principal, I fully understand the terrible position these bullies have placed you in – your situation is shockingly common.

And it won’t stop until you take some action and get people on your side. Start by telling your parents what is happening at school and insist that they meet with the principal when school starts in the fall.

The principal has the authority to see that this form of brutality and extortion is eliminated immediately.

Suspension followed by a parent conference is the least these two bullies should receive.

The problem should be effectively handled by the principal, but if for

I had good grades and wanted to start college in the fall, but my graduation class graduated without me and now I’ve since taken and passed the GED test and was given a high school diploma.

I don’t consider the GED diploma the same as a regular diploma and I’m wondering if it is accepted for college entrance. In today’s deal, what should West lead against four hearts?

Note that North is right to respond one diamond. With a good hand, responder bids his longest suit first.
