Coal City nears FEMA requirements Village properties, residences given notice before necessary demolitions

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Coal City Village Board heard updates from Village Administrator Matt Fritz on tornado activities in regards to FEMA status, unsafe buildings and the status of donations.

“ComEd has spent $7.8 million after the tornado that goes uncharted,” Fritz said. “That amount goes towards the scope of incident.”

by ComEd goes a long way toward the $18.3 million needed to trigger the disaster declaration from the federal govern-

ment. FEMA declaration from the federal government helps the municipality in more than one way.

“It allows two-part assistance,” Fritz said after the meeting. “Money comes back to the community from the federal government and it opens the residents to individual assistance.”

He said if the federal government reimburses the community 75 percent, it will help taxpayers who won’t see taxes rise to pay for the full amount of damage incurred by the village.

Mayor Terry Halliday said they have been tracking the

amount spent to know when they reach the amount needed.

Fritz said Joe Schroeder with Grundy County Emergency Management Agency has told him FEMA still is in the process of reviewing the public assistance from government associations.

He said Shroeder told him the Small Business Administration originally indicated they might have met their requirements to offer assistance in the community.

Trustee Neal Nelson said he is disappointed he hasn’t seen Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, visit the village after the tornado.

“It’s important for residents to know they need to start the discussion,” Fritz said. “We need to know what is going on at that house.”

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City High School football players, coaches and administrators knew there would be a presentation Monday night of a $50,000 check from the Chicago Bears.

But they didn’t know former Bears linebacker and future National Football League Hall of Fame inductee Brian Urlacher would be there to answer their questions and present the donation. The money is helping to cover the noninsured repair costs the school was left with following the devastation of an EF3 tornado June 22.

“I didn’t know a player was coming,” Coal City High School football coach Lenny Onsen said.

As players finished practice at about 5:45 p.m. with some conditioning work, they were told to make a quick change, get a drink of water and head back to the field.

Onsen looked on as a tall man in a blue Bears polo shirt, khaki shorts and a white golf hat walked through the parking lot with just a few Bears media employees.

“Who is that?” Onsen said.

Seconds later, the players figured it out and tried to contain their emotion as Urlacher walked up the hill to the north end of their practice field. Before long, Urlacher was sharing stories about his high school days.

Players asked him questions about his high school days in New Mexico, where he was the only player to make it to college football on a scholarship.

He told the players to enjoy high school football, because after that football – and life – becomes more serious.

“I wish I could go back to high school,” Urlacher said to the team.

Historical society gets rare coal-burning stove

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A coal-burning stove that once warmed the parlor of a wealthy Illinois resident moved Monday to its newest home – the Grundy County Historical Museum.

The rare antique stove, a Royal Acorn No. 47, was donated by Jerry and Kathy Sidenstick of Diamond in memory of their daughter Geri Lynn, who died in 2011 from leukemia.

“My father was a hard working man. He took the stove apart and cleaned it and had it renickled,” Jerry Sidenstick said of his father, Howard, who in his will left his son the stove.

Little is known about the stove, which is valued at $6,000, other than it was originally sold for less than $100 and would have been used as a showpiece in a wealthier person’s parlor when guests came to visit.

“It was built to impress,” local historian Debbie Steffes said. “Having it in our museum as a focal point is like having the Hope Diamond here.”

Howard Sidenstick was an avid collector of antiques, from coins to furniture to the decorative stove.

After it was restored in the 1960s, it remained in pieces for years, in several boxes.

In 2012, a year after he lost his daughter, Jerry Sidenstick

“Since it was coal burning, and with coal burning being predominant in the county, this would make a good home,” Kathy Sidenstick said.

The stove has been placed in the one-room schoolhouse portion of the museum, since it doesn’t have a proper parlor, and the one-room schoolhouse was heated by wood-burning or coal-burning stoves.

The event begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Nettle Creek Country Club in Morris and ends at 1:30 p.m. Special Connections of Grundy County President Jennifer Price said the outing is the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser and spots in the field usually sell out.

“It’s been a great hit and a lot of fun,” Price said.

Last year’s golf outing had more than 100 golfers and raised more than $10,000.

Founded in 2010, Special Connections of Grundy County serves individuals with disabilities in Grundy County and the surrounding area.

Price said Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget, which would significantly cut funding to disability services, wouldn’t have a direct effect on Special Connections because the organization is fund-

ed through donations. However, there are agencies that may be forced to shut down or borrow money to stay open, she said.

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County was chosen this year as the sponsored charity for Exelon’s United Way campaign.

The campaign began at Braidwood Station with a luncheon and fundraiser, which included raffle items, food and games for Exelon employees.

We Care, along with United Way of Grundy County, was invited to give presentations before joining in, according to a news release from We Care.

Jeremy McNabb and Jenny Hackler, who chaired the fundraiser for Exelon, gathered volunteers from Braidwood Station and came to We

Care to work on projects in the new building at 530 Bedford Road in Morris.

Over the course of two days, volunteers painted We Care’s clothes closet laundry room, bought and assembled new shelves, provided plastic storage totes for its storage area, touched up and painted unfinished areas in the pantry and reconfigured the plumbing for the loading dock sump pump.

“We sponsor an agency every year, and this year we chose We Care because of the work that they do in the community, the help that they gave during the Coal City tornado and the work they do to help people get food and clothing,” McNabb said in the news release. “We felt that it

was a good organization to get behind, and we wanted to help them get settled into their new warehouse. It feels good to give back to the community where we work.”

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, clothing, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

We Care is a United Way partner agency and is funded primarily by private donations.

Route 47 construction underway in Morris

By SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation has started resurfacing work on Route 47 in Morris.

A contract for about $1 million was awarded to D Construction Inc. of Coal City for the work, which includes milling and hot mix asphalt resurfacing of Route 47 from North Benton Street to Interstate 80, according to a news release from IDOT. Also included in the work is the replacement of the traffic signal detector loops and reconstruction of existing sidewalk ramps at various intersections along Route 47.

Due to the nature of the work, a significant traffic impact is anticipated. In an effort to minimize disruption, milling and resurfacing will take place at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

However, daytime lane closures might occur for sidewalk ramp construction and pavement marking.

The work is expected to be complete by late November, according to the news release.

Motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution when traveling through the work zone and to be alert for changing traffic patterns, flaggers and all other workers.

Seneca FFA members attend leadership camp MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MONTICELLO – Lane Weber, Logan Vandenberg, Brandon Calhoon, Sydney Poyner and Alyssa Gates of the Seneca FFA chapter attended the 2015 Illinois FFA Leadership Camp, held from July 28 to July 31 at Allerton Park near Monticello.

They were among the 320 campers from across the state who gathered to develop leadership skills and learn more about the FFA, according to a news release from the Seneca FFA. Campers participated in challenge courses to develop teamwork, Ag olympics, FFA power sessions, dance and a large water balloon fight to escape the heat.

Satellite offices available for area nonprofits

MORRIS – Hopefully by now you’ve heard that the Community Foundation of Grundy County is moving offices.

As of Sept. 1, our address will be 520 W. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

Does that address sound familiar? It used to be We Care of Grundy County’s condo in the Canalport Community Center at the far west end of Illinois Avenue.

The CCC is a nonprofit hub. Our neighbors are the Grundy County Historical Society, the Christian Youth Center of Morris, the Morris Theatre Guild, and Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice.

In our first years, the foundation was in about 600 square feet on the second floor of the Baum Building.

In 2009, we moved to our current location at 102 Liberty St. – with about twice the space.

Now we’re moving into what should be our permanent home as it’s a purchase rather than rent and about 3,500 square feet!

So what will we do with all this space?

This is the exciting part – we have built three satellite offices for nonprofits to rent at low cost.

The first offers are going out to agencies who serve Grundy County but are based elsewhere.

It is our mission to improve the quality of life in Grundy County through

leadership and philanthropy, so our goal is to offer this lowcost, part-time rental space to agencies who otherwise wouldn’t have office space in Grundy.

By having them here, it helps our residents by not making them travel to services outside of Grundy County – the services will be offered closer to home.

Each of the three offices is about 8 feet by 10 feet and will be available at $10 a half day and $20 a full day.

So if an agency wants to rent one for three mornings a week, that would be $120 a month. Similarly, a full-time rental will be $400 a month.

Each rental office will have access to a small conference room (3-4 people), free Internet access, storage and parking.

Renters will be able to use the copier/printer and pay per usage.

Phone usage also will be a case-by-case basis depending on whether the agency wants to forward a phone line or use staff cellphones.

If you know of a nonprofit that would like office space in Morris, please share this information.

Our plan is to keep the rental price low so nonprofit budgets are spent on programs rather than overhead.

Our condo also includes management of the community conference room, which seats 20 to 25 people, plus it has A/V equipment and a conference phone.

It’s been a wild summer with tornado response and condo remodeling, so we are happy to see at least this part wind down.

We will have an open house for the community in October (let’s get through Corn Festival first), and we invite you come see our new space.

Morris opens season with loss to L-Way North

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A new era for Morris volleyball began Monday night when Taylor Lafond coached her first varsity match as the Redskins’ head coach against Lincoln-Way North.

That era is still looking for its first mark in the victory column after Lincoln-Way North came away with a 25-19, 25-19 win.

Morris (0-1) got off to a good start, as Janelle Brehm started the season with an ace, then Kaylin Korte delivered a kill for a quick 2-0 Redskin lead.

Morris held leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the early going before the first set was tied at 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Lincoln-Way North then pulled away a bit with a 6-0 run to take a 13-7 lead, forcing a Morris timeout.

The Redskins, who host Coal City on Thursday, closed the gap to 14-9 on a block by Korte before North opened up a 20-11 lead.

Morris refused to go away quietly, clawing back to within 21-14 and then 23-18 before North won the first set on a Redskin serving error.

“This was definitely a tough match to open up with,” Lafond said “Lincoln-Way North is a very good team. I saw a lot of good things out of our team, but a team like Lincoln-Way North will definitely let you know what you still need to work on.

“I thought our defense did a good job. We were hustling after everything and didn’t give up on any ball. Our energy was up. Even when they would go on a four- or fivepoint run, we maintained our energy. That’s big, because things can turn in volleyball very quickly and you have to be ready at all times.”

The second set started much the same as the first, as Morris jumped to a 4-1 lead.

Lincoln-Way North forced ties at 4, 5, 6 and 7 before opening a 12-9 lead. Morris tied it at 12 on an ace by Addison Polite, who also led the team with 11 assists.

Korte led Morris with 10 kills and added two digs, while Brehm had five kills and four digs.

“Kaylin had a good match for us,” Lafond said. “And Janelle stepped up, too. Jas-

mine Cook did a nice job in the back row as the libero.

“We still have some work to do as far as working together. We had some first-game jitters. Some of our serves were a little long and some of our attacks went long. I think our next match, we will be cleaner

and more relaxed.

“Lincoln-Way North was very clean tonight. They were crisp on offense and they work well together. We need to work on closing our block.”

As far as her first match as a varsity coach, Lafond is glad to have it out of the way.

“I was a little jittery going in,” she admitted. “All day at school, I was thinking about everything, trying to make sure I didn’t forget anything, all the head coach stuff I never had to do before. I hope our next match goes smoother for me, too. I’m sure it will.”

The members of the I & M Gymnastics team have received much support from both individuals and businesses throughout the community.

Coal City wins Morton Tourney: The Warriors had a pro-

ductive weekend traveling down to Morton and coming home with 1st place after winning 3 games.

On Friday night, Payton Hutchings pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Coal City defeated Normal Parkside, 3-0.

Parkside had defeated Coal City in last year’s state tournament. Saturday morning, the Warriors shut down Pleasant Plains by a score of 5-1 as Austin Pullara pitched a four-hitter. In the championship game, Coal City shut out host Morton, 7-0.

Connar Best recorded eight strikeouts in five innings on a two-hitter. Top hitters on the weekend for Coal City (71) were Connar Best and Jack Bunton, while Colin Meece had a run-saving diving catch.

Scalpelli nabs late-model win STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – Tony Scalpelli started things off by setting the fast qualifying time at 15.214 seconds and finished his night with a late-model feature victory. Scalpelli won the 47-lap main event Friday night at Grundy County Speedway. Boris Jurkovic ran second, followed

by John Nutley, Larry Schuler, Brett Sontag, Eddie Hoffman, Brandon Clubb, James Gregait, Andy Jones and Scott Tomasik.

In the 30-lap late-model feature, meanwhile, the top six

places, in order, went to Hoffman, Jurkovic, Schuler, Tomasik, Scalpelli and Ricky Baker.

Chris Cooling won in the first heat, with Billy Knippenberg second and Brian Tedeschi third. Schuler took the second heat ahead of Gregait and David Einhaus. Nutley captured the third heat and was followed by Tomasik and Baker.

Tom Knippenberg won the 25-lap Mid-American feature.

Matt Clemens, Kevin Murphy, Marty McKinney, Jim Kachel and John Ventrello rounded out the top six.

Murphy set the fast time at 16.570. John McMahon captured the first heat ahead of Mike Slabenak and Kachel. Clemens took the second heat, with Knippenberg second and Ventrello third. The 25-lap street stock feature went to Tim Stewart. He was followed by Seth Blommaert, Cheryl Hryn, Rita Fields, Christy Penrod and Zach Sontag. Jake Bradley set the fast time of 17.613. Stewart, Bill Serviss and Darell Gay finished 1-2-3 in the first heat. Fields won the second heat ahead of Penrod and Hryn.

Six gymnasts from the I & M Gymnastics Team in Channahon traveled to the AAU Age Group Gymnastics Nationals earlier this summer, competing for Team Central.

Nationals were held June 10 through 14 at the Westgate Hotel and Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Coaches Tyler Yost and Izzy Broberg led the team into competition.

The competition opened with the Level 4 Women. Jordanna Cortes was the first from I & M to compete, placing sixth on the balance beam and in the floor exercise and ranked ninth in the all-around competition.

The next day, the Level 6 Women met. Gwen DeMaso represented Team Central with a solid vault, bringing home the silver medal. Gwen DeMaso also placed on the balance beam and the floor exercise, bringing home fifth-place medals in each. Her success in her events placed her in the all-around competition, ranking fifth in the nation.

Chloe DeMaso, a level 7, gave a strong performance on the uneven parallel bars. Her routine earned her the silver medal. She also placed with

her floor exercise (5th place) and her vault (6th place).

Chloe’s scores placed her sixth in the all-around competition.

Another level 7, Lexi Kronberger, had a rewarding performance. With her floor routine, Lexi Kronberger earned first place and brought home the gold. She also brought home a silver medal on the balance beam and a bronze medal on the vault. She ranked third in the all-around competition and brought home a bronze medal.

On the last day of the competition, the boys took the floor. Nic Strange and Mekhi Cortes represented I & M and Team Central. Nic Strange, a level 5, brought home five medals.

He won two silver medals – one on the rings and another on the vault. He also brought home the bronze medal for his performance on the floor exercise, and the fourth-place medal on the pommel horse.

His final medal was for the allaround competition, in which he ranked fourth.

Meanwhile, Mekhi Cortes, a level 6, brought home seven gold medals. He placed first on each of the six events and was ranked first in the nation.

Yesterday, I compared flipping a coin to an endplay. In the former, you have only a 50 percent chance of winning; but in the latter, it is 100 percent if you can draw trumps, keeping at least one in the dummy and your hand, eliminate the cards in two side suits, and give an opponent the lead when he has to help you.

Here is another example. How should South play in six hearts after West leads the spade queen? What do you think of the auction?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, promising four or more hearts and at least game-forcing values. The opener, without a singleton or void, rebid three hearts to show a maximum. (Four of his major would have indicated a minimum and three no-trump middling strength.) Four diamonds was a control-bid (cue-bid). Then South used regular Blackwood. (If North-South had been using Roman Key Card Blackwood, South would have known that North had the heart queen.)

At first glance, the contract appears to depend upon one out of two diamond finesses. But whenever declarer faces this position, he should try to engineer an elimination and endplay.

He wins the first trick, draws trumps, and cashes his other four black-suit winners, discarding the diamond five from the dummy. Now South leads a diamond to dummy’s 10 (or queen). After East wins with the jack (or king), he must either lead back into dummy’s diamond tenace or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Yes, a diamond lead is fatal to the contract. East should have doubled the four-diamond control-bid.

In fact, THREE groups of tax preparers have unlimited practice rights under Depart-

ment of the Treasury regulations to represent their clients on any matters before the IRS – certified public accountants, attorneys and enrolled agents.

None are more qualified than CPAs. CPAs are licensed by state regulators and must meet minimum education requirements to sit for their national licensing exam and then fulfill ongoing continuing education requirements, as well as abide by a code of professional ethics. Attorneys have a generally similar system.

Enrolled agents are often former IRS employees who are licensed by the IRS after passing an exam. Enrolled agents are competent and respected tax professionals, but the fact they are licensed by

the IRS does not mean they are better qualified or superior in serving clients than are CPAs or attorneys.

IRS.gov has a page explaining the different types of tax return preparers and their qualifications, which may be helpful to your readers. – Troy

Dearth, Assistant State's Attorney in the Circuit Court of Grundy County entitled 'In the interest of JARED T. HERNANDEZ, a minor', and that in the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington Street, Morris, Illinois on the 26th day of August, 2015, at the hour of 2:30 p.m., or as soon thereafter as this cause may be heard, a trial will be held upon the petition to have the child declared to be a ward of the court under that Act. The court has the authority in this proceeding to take from you the custody and guardianship of the minor, and to appoint a guardian with power to consent to adoption of the minor.
