Born: Dec. 13, 1921 Died: Aug. 18, 2014 Ruth G. Grieff (Larson), age 92, of Dwight, passed away peacefully, Monday, August 18, 2014, at Heritage Health, Dwight.

Ruth was born December 13, 1921, to Gebhart and Genieve (Olsen) Larson. She married Lyle H. Grieff November 15, 1941.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Muzzarelli; son, Dale (Lynn) Grieff; and sister-in-law, Lois Kelly.

She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Gebhart and Genieve Larson; husband, Lyle Grieff; son-in-law, Keith Muzzarelli; granddaughter, Lori Muzzarelli; sister, Anna Mae Hill (Norman); and brothers, Leo Larson (Kay) and George Larson.

Ruth was affiliated with the Methodist church. She was a farming homemaker. She enjoyed bowling at the Dwight bowling alley. She also played euchre and loved bingo.

Services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Dwight Methodist Church. Visitation will be held prior to services from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Lance Leeds will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Heritage Health of Dwight, Illinois.

Wayne Edward Sorensen, age 93, of South Wilmington, IL, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014, at Morris

BRIEFS Hospital in Morris, IL. Born March 3, 1921, in Custer Park, IL, to the late Charles and Minnie (nee Wieski) Sorensen.

Wayne retired from Caterpillar Tractor in Joliet, IL, following 26 years of employment. Married the former Esther Marie Residori on August 22, 1943, in South Wilmington.

Veteran of the United States Army, having served in the 78th Infantry during WWII, European Theater.

Member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington. He was a former board member of the South Wilmington Fire Department, the South Wilmington City Board, and the South Wilmington Fireman’s Club.

He was one of the original members of the Elbow Benders. Wayne, along with his wife, Esther, owned and operated Sorensen’s Tap in South Wilmington.

Surviving are his wife, Esther, of South Wilmington; son, Randy (Robin) Sorensen of South Wilmington; daughter, Linda (late Billy) Carmack of Gardner; five grandchildren, Kellie (John) Sippel, Tom Carmack, Attilio (Nina) Sorensen, Brandon (Melanie) Sorensen, and Harmony (Frank) Labanowski; twelve great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; three sisters, Marcella Staffan of Pampa, TX, Rita Anderson of Bothell, WA, and Helen Stella of Enid, OK; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was his sister, Mabel Cramer.

Funeral services will be from the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., South Wilmington Chapel, Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. to the St. Lawrence Catholic Church for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Rev. John Hornicak will officiate.

Interment with military honors will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery in Braceville, IL. The visitation will be Monday, August 25, from 5-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

MAP begins telephone solicitation in Minooka MINOOKA – The Minooka Police is informing residents the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, which represents the department’s officers for the purpose of collective bargaining and other legal services, will soon begin its annual telephone solicitation.

People making the calls are not members of the Minooka Police Department, as telephone solicitations for money from this department is prohibited, according to a news release from Police Chief Justin Meyer.

Those making the calls represent MAP and the donations will fund the services MAP provides for officers. Donations do not become property of the police department, according to Meyer.

Nonprofits encouraged to apply for energy grant State Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, is encouraging area nonprofit organizations to apply for the Reduce Your Use For Good Grant Program.

Direct Energy, a major electricity, natural gas and home service provider in North America, has established the program to award grants that will help organizations reduce their energy usage to lower their energy bills.

501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organizations may apply for the program. If chosen, the organization will receive

a $5,000 grant to improve energy efficiency.

Nonprofits can apply by visiting www.reduceyouruseforgood.com. The application process is relatively short and requires details about whom the organization serves and how the grant would be used, according to the news release.

All applications must be received by Aug. 31 and applicants will be notified of their application status via email by Sept. 30.

State provides funding for I&M Canal, I-55 work GIBSON CITY – Gov. Pat Quinn announced last week capital investments of more than $1.6 million for construction projects in several counties, including Grundy and Will.

The projects aim to create jobs and improve transportation safety and efficiency, according to a news release from Quinn’s office, and are funded by the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program. The Illinois Department of Transportation will manage the projects.

In Grundy, LaSalle and Will counties, the Illinois and Michigan Canal will receive 138 historical markers and way-finding signs from the city of LaSalle to the village of Romeoville for $53,684

by Western Remac Inc. of Woodridge, the lowest of four bidders.

Funding also will go toward pavement patching on Interstate 55 between McLean County line and Grundy County line for $460,950 by G. M. Sipes Construction Inc. of Rushville.

“I’ve always wanted to work with animals and had to decide what to do with FFA,” Doloski said. “I found an organization and applied to see if I could pick up a dog to train.”

“I have the puppy for 17 to 20 months and teach it basic commands,” Doloski said. “I teach it basic commands, take it in the car, and go to stores with it.”

A senior at Seneca High School, Doloski is training her second dog “Beck,” a golden retriever black lab mix who she said has a distinctly different personality than the first dog she had. Beck is a more laid back dog.

“Whenever we have an opportunity to inspire the next generation, we like to help,” Hospital Manager Matt Johnson said. “They have the opportunity to see more than they do when they are in the exam room with their own pet.

More families relying on food stamps Area nonprofit provides aid when government programs aren’t enough

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Several years ago, Grapevine Mission founder Judy Pershey came across two young kids digging through dumpsters, looking for their next meal.

“It was heartbreaking,” Pershey said. “They were so excited that there was leftover pizza thrown away. We started bringing them food.”

Helping those two kids compelled her and Mark Pershey to establish Grapevine in Dwight, a nonprofit organization that helps local families by delivering food, “dignity packs” and offering other services.

As a volunteer-based operation, Grapevine’s resources are limited. Pershey will often encourage clients to apply for government aid.

“Many of them don’t know

the system or how the benefits work,” she said.

The most well known and widely used government food assistance resource is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP. Locally, Grundy County has seen an increase in the number of SNAP recipients in the past five years.

Although the demand is greater, the amount of aid available is not. SNAP money received per household has decreased in Illinois over the last five years.

In 2007, the United States Department of Agriculture reported 3.7 percent of the Grundy County population – or 1,859 people – relied on food stamps.

By 2010 – the most-recent data available for Grundy – that number rose to 3,134 people, or 6.2 percent of the pop-

In 2013, the average Illinois household received $276.75 per month in benefits, down from $285.85 per month in 2009, according to the USDA. The SNAP program was a topic of much debate during the 2012 Farm Bill discussions.

In the end, Congress approved a $8.6 billion cut to the SNAP program.

“We do find that because of the socioeconomic times, people need more food and

they need more money to purchase food. But there have been some really big cuts,” said Phylicia Malone, registered nurse for the Grundy County Health Department.

“In Grundy County alone, we took some major cuts in the last year.”

In dealing with families who receive SNAP, Pershey said food stamps will only cover about three weeks of every month.

Her clients rely on food banks such as Grapevine and We Care of Grundy County to provide food for the remainder of the month.

Pershey said there is a misconception about SNAP recipients, that they are all using the system to make money.

In reality, the system is not providing enough for them to survive.

“People who have never experienced poverty see it as a

handout. They think it’s greed and not need,” Pershey said.

“They’re not seeing the mass lines of people. They’re not seeing the individual person.

They’re not seeing that mom who is trying to figure out how to feed her kids so they don’t go to bed hungry.”

Malone said she sees a lot of women, infant and children participants combining their benefits with SNAP to make ends meet.

She added that many of these programs have strict guidelines, not only about what a person can buy, but how often they are looking for work.

With more cuts to the SNAP program and more hungry mouths, Malone said it’s becoming harder to serve everyone in need.

“If SNAP was working perfectly, then we wouldn’t be here,” Pershey said.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought,” Woods said after witnessing the amputation.

“I want to go into veterinary medicine, and this showed me I can do it. I need to learn how, but I know I can handle it.”

Schroeder was a little more hesitant about witnessing the surgeries, but afterward, she was proud that she did better than she expected.

“I thought I’d have to leave,” she said. “It’s amazing how they stay calm the whole time.”

Kinsella said she didn’t think about the many services veterinarians provide aside from shots, so the procedures were interesting to watch.

Doloski said she was interested to see what her service dog would be like after his surgery, because he’s such a mellow dog.

“It’s really cool to see all of this. Dr. Bauer walked us through the entire procedure,” she said Johnson graduated Seneca High School in 1994 and also was an FFA member under Jeff

FFA sponsor, said Doloski is learning a lot about responsibility through her project.

She has to work with the dog every day and be its teacher.

She picked up Beck when she was returning her first dog to Ohio, where it would undergo six to nine months of additional training.

“I had the first one for 17 months and took it back when I picked up Beck,” she said.

“You have to not get too attached to the dog because it is not your dog.”

She knows she’s working for a bigger cause, and there is a greater need than many might realize.

“I remember FFA being a great program. Some of my favorite courses were animal sciences,” Johnson said. “I always knew I wanted to go into veterinary medicine.”

Remembering his own passion for the program, Johnson naturally wants to inspire today’s FFA members.

Maierhofer said this was the first time the program has partnered with a veterinary hospital. He was excited to of-

fer the opportunity to his members.

“One of the things FFA does is, it strengthens people and takes them places they wouldn’t be able to go,” he said.

Seneca FFA regularly goes to places such as the Chicago Merchandise Mart and the Federal Reserve.

Johnson said the hospital normally donates Vet for a Day certificates to preferred charities, bringing about 30 children a year through its doors to witness surgeries or treatments.

“You have to not get too attached to the dog because it is not your dog.”

To get the dog acclimated to different settings, Doloski takes it to school with her for at least one day. She’s already taken it to FFA events with many people around. The dog did well, she said.

Doloski is financially responsible for the dog, which must have a special diet and requires veterinary care.

Maierhofer said she has received help from local FFA grants. She reached out to Animal Care Hospital in Morris, which donated some services and gave her a discount on neutering.

Hospital Manager Matt Johnson said he and Dr. Megan Bauer agreed to help, because as former FFA members, they understand the importance of the FFA project.

“The thing that you will never see as giveaways anymore are matches and ashtrays,” Sroczynski said.

“We’re not supposed to be smoking anymore,” Steffes added.

Kitchen utensils served as popular advertising ploys, targeting stay-at-home moms who spent hours a day cooking.

Sroczynski said women would order the utensils through a local business for a cheap price, and the cookware would come inscribed with a business’s name or logo.

The spatulas, spoons and knives in the historical society’s display are from Grainco, Steffes said.

“Utensils like that were good advertisement because the wife would tell the husband, ‘I got these nice new things and they were half price,’ or something, and the husband might go back to that business,” Sroczynski said.

MORRIS – Donating to the Grundy County Historical Society’s latest exhibit could be as easy as digging through your junk drawer.

Those piles of seemingly useless clutter could be historical treasure troves, society President Donna Sroczynski said.

“I’ve been telling people, look in junk drawers and desk drawers and think of donating those things you’re never really going to use,” Sroczynski said. “History is being thrown out. People don’t think that anything is important, but everything has some historical value.”

The historical society is collecting old advertising gimmicks: pens, pencils, matchboxes and other manner of bric-a-brac handed out by local businesses of yore.

Throughout the years, the society has accumulated enough advertising memorabilia to create a small display, but Sroczynski and Grundy Historical Society curator Debbie Steffes are asking residents to continue contributing.

“This is the first advertising exhibit we’ve ever done,” Steffes said.

As it is, the collection features memorabilia from throughout the decades, the oldest piece a 105-year-old ice pick from Melvin Matteson’s ice house, formerly located on the Illinois River.

A standout item is a board game titled “Game of Grundy County,” which looks noticeably similar to a Monopoly board.

Replacing properties such as Boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue are several Grundy County businesses from the time.

“From what I can surmise, it was probably produced by the Chamber of Commerce during the ’80s as a promotional thing,” Steffes said of the game. “On the board, it

Orphans enjoy summer in Morris Siblings play, meet potential adoptive families at various events

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two Colombian orphans have enjoyed themselves this summer in Morris with their host family Eric and Anne Rasmusson.

The Rasmussons were considering adoption last fall when they found the organization Kidsave, an advocacy group that focuses on finding families for children nationally and internationally. They decided to help.

“We’ve put the adoption on hold, but we saw the opportunity to help,” Anne said prior to the arrival of siblings Danilo, 11, and Angelica, 12.

After arriving Aug. 1 in Chicago, the pair made their way to the Rasmussons’ farm north of Morris, where they’ve learned many new things.

The children don’t speak much English, but spoke with the Morris Daily Herald through a translator.

“We’ve played and we went on a scooter and in a pool,” Angelica said. “We’ve had two bonfires and got to go to a festival.”

Danilo said he has enjoyed his time in Morris and is surprised by the fine manners of the people living here.

The kids are told the trip is a summer vacation they get to go on, but they know there is a chance someone will adopt them.

Danilo is afraid of not being adopted by his 12th birthday next spring, when he will age out of the foster care system and go to a more institutional type setting, in his words. He’s even more afraid of what will happen when he turns 18 and will be out on his own.

The past three weeks, Danilo had a chance to forget his

circumstances back home for a little while and do things all kids do: play tag in the yard, go to the beach and learn to ride a bike for the first time.

“The kids come and stay for a four- or five-week visit,” Kirkland said. “We’ve found this to be a very effective formula and 75 to 85 percent of the children who have participated have been adopted.”

The last group event is Saturday in Orland Park.

Kidsave believes every child needs a family, and by finding families for these children, their chances of completing school, finding a good job and building a life and family of their own greatly increases.

Without a supportive family, the children will be on their own after they leave the system, usually between the ages of 16 and 18.

MORRIS – The best thing for the Morris football team at Friday night’s intrasquad scrimmage? Well, it depends on whom you ask.

“We like to do this as a fun type of practice for the kids.”

Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “They have been working real hard all summer and so when they get a chance to get in front of the fans, it’s good to let them have some fun.

“The biggest thing that we as coaches get out of it is that we have an officiating crew here. That’s something we don’t normally have in a practice, so now we have a week to know what it is we have to clean up penalty-wise. That information is very valuable to us heading into that first week of the season.”

The players, on the other hand, enjoyed a different aspect.

“No sprints after practice,” said more than one of the Redskins.

In all seriousness, though, the Redskins were excited to get back on the field at MCHS, where they are eager to make the 3-6 record of 2013 a distant memory.

“We just want to get going,” Morris senior Robbie Meucci said before the scrimmage.

“We are getting tired of hitting ourselves. We want to hit someone else. But it’s fun to get out here and play on the field.

“After spending most of the summer practicing and doing things by ourselves, it’s nice to get out here and do it in front of the town of Morris. That’s what it’s all about.”

Sobol is the quarterback and Walker figures to get most of the carries as the Redskins’ main running back and also will play in the secondary on defense. Layne will anchor an offensive line that hopes to be one of the Redskins’ strengths this season.

“Our line looks a lot stronger,” Thorson said. “They have a year under their belts and they have worked very hard in the offseason.”

So has the defense, which allowed an uncharacteristic 30.2 points a game last year.

“We feel like we know our offense will be pretty good,”

Meucci said. “That was our strength last year, too. But the defense has gotten about 10 times better over the summer.

It feels like we are way more intense than we were last year.

“I feel like we are a lot more aggressive on defense.

We lacked a lot of experience last year, but this year, we have all played and we are a lot more comfortable. We all know where the other guys are going to be, and that lets us be more aggressive, knowing that someone is going to have our backs. We know we can go 110 percent because if we make a mistake, we would rather make it an aggressive mistake than a passive one. If you are being aggressive, then

good things happen more often.

“Also, our defensive coach [John Courter] has done a good job of making sure we communicate on the field a lot better than we did last year.

We are excited to get going.”

STAFF REPORTS DWIGHT – In the season-opening match for the Morris boys golf team, it came down to the fifth man on the scorecard.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, the Trojans got the better of them in that regard and came away with the win. The two teams tied with identical 185s after the first four players’ scores were tallied up, but Dwight’s fifth man, Braden Marks, shot 52 to get the best of Morris’ fifth, Gabe Sajnaj, who shot 53.

Morris’ Jake Hulbert took medalist honors with a round of 41 at Dwight Country Club, while teammate Nick McPherson shot 42. Dylan Callahan and Kolton Jacobsen each shot 51 for the Redskins, who were scheduled to play at Broken Arrow in the Lemont Shoot-Out on Friday night.

Dwight was led by Nathan Zabel, who shot 42, followed by Seth Galloway (45), Nick Schultz (47) and Drew Jensen (51).

On the junior varsity level, Jack Galloway’s round of 47 led Morris to a 202-223 win, while teammate Keaton Cryder shot 48.

Pitcher part of 2013 trade with Cubs, Orioles

By BRIAN SANDALOW Chicago Sun-Times CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta hasn’t forgotten his time with the Baltimore Orioles.

Instead of simply moving on from that part of his career, the Cubs righty still draws on both the positive and negative experiences he had in Baltimore.

It was clear during Friday’s 4-1 win over the Orioles those years haven’t been wasted.

“You think about it all the time. That’s just part of my development. Those years still are very important to me, for a lot of reasons,” Arrieta said. “Regardless of how certain situations went – negatively or positively – they all

impacted my career in a certain way.”

In July of last year, Baltimore traded Arrieta to the Cubs with Pedro Strop and two international signing slots for Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger. The deal was the end of an up-and-down four years with the Orioles for Arrieta, who went from a 2012 Opening Day starter to a piece of a trade for another pitcher after struggling with consistency and his control.

Those problems seem to have been fixed with the Cubs.

“He’s just being more consistent. He always has [had] the good stuff,” Strop said.

“It’s just being consistent and he’s being focused on what he needs to do.”

By the time he was traded to the Cubs last year, Arrieta was 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA lifetime with the Orioles and languishing in Class AAA, needing of a change of scenery.

He got it, and has matured into the Cubs’ best starter, lowering his ERA this year to 2.53 with a seven-inning, onerun outing that started with him retiring the first 13 batters he faced.

“I’m thankful for those times over there, those years there and I’ll continue to use them for future reference, to reach back in the memory bank and think about certain times and certain situations that I had there that I have now and how I react and handle those,” Arrieta said. “I think about it a lot.”

Rose not worried about starting for USA Guard doesn’t mind coming off bench

Last week in Chicago, Derrick Rose was asked if he needed to be in the starting lineup for Team USA. “As long as I can step on the floor, knock this rust off, I’ll be fine,” Rose said. “I don’t mind coming off the bench.”

That was tested on Friday, as USA Basketball had their last warm-up game for the FIBA World Cup on American soil, and sure enough, Rose was a bench player in the 112-86 win over Puerto Rico.

A bench player with an asterisk, however.

After missing Wednesday night’s exhibition game with

the Dominican Republic because of “fatigue,” as well as sitting out of two practices at the start of the week, the decision was made to start Kyrie Irving for a second-consecutive game.

Rose had been the starter Aug. 16 against Brazil.

But Rose wouldn’t have to wait long to see the Madison Square Garden court, taking the floor with 4:29 left in the first quarter, and more importantly, easing some minds with the way he played, not only scoring six points, but looking like the team’s best playmaker in the way he distributed the ball for four assists.

As far as the growing concerns that Rose might be better served to walk away from Team USA and focus on the upcoming Bulls season, well, his coach Tom Thibodeau

had a different opinion on that.

“I think it’s the best thing for [Rose],” Thibodeau told ESPN. “Obviously, because of the depth of the team he doesn’t have to play a lot, just find the rhythm of the game, go out and do your job, and this is a good build-up for him, so it’s all positive.”

Thibodeau, who is serving as an assistant coach for Team USA, has been pushing for Rose to participate in the FIBA cup since back in the winter, when Rose was first recovering from season-ending surgery on his meniscus.

Considering Rose played in only 10 regular-season games since the 2012 playoffs, Thibodeau was sounding like it was almost a must that Rose stayed the course this offseason, participating in USA Basketball.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey is more comfortable with his defense than he was at the beginning of fall camp.

One area he’s been impressed with is the defensive line, an area where NIU lost four starters from last season – George Rainey and Joe Windsor at defensive end and Ken Bishop and Anthony Wells at defensive tackle.

Carey specifically mentioned the interior of the line as having a good camp. In terms of individuals, he specifically talked about tackles Mario Jones, Corey Thomas and William Lee, as well junior-college transfer defensive end Ben Compton as players who have stepped during the

“It helps because there’s no point in playing somebody if they’re tired,” NIU senior defensive end Jason Meehan said. “If you can’t give it 100 percent there’s no point in you being out there giving 50 percent when somebody else is fresh, so given that we have a lot of guys with good experience and guys we can trust we can rotate as many guys as we need to. So it helps us stay fresh and gives a lot of guys experience.”

OPINION Frantic Dems plead for more donations I’ve been getting a lot of emails from Democratic fundraisers lately. They seem very worried about November’s elections.

First came the highly publicized “Impeachment Red Alert” campaign, in which the Democratic congressional committee warned that Republicans will impeach President Barack Obama if they win control of the House and Senate. Though much ridiculed, the “Impeachment Red Alert” effort was a big winner, pulling in $2.1 million in small donations in a single weekend.

Despite that success, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s mood seemed to blacken in subsequent days as she asked for more and more money.

The subject line of Pelosi’s next appeal was “Kiss all hope goodbye.” Her message was all will be lost for the remainder of Obama’s term if Republican House Speaker John Boehner remains in power.

Then came a missive with the subject line “Byron, I’m pleading,” in which Pelosi pronounced herself “disgusted” by the prospect of Republicans “dragging the president’s good name through the mud.”

Vice President Joe Biden got in the game with a few emails, although he didn’t grovel like Pelosi. Finally, Obama himself began emailing. With everything the president of the United States has on his plate right now, you’d think he’d have more pressing things to do.

Apparently not.

“Nancy Pelosi has emailed you,” Obama wrote.

“Joe Biden has emailed you.

And now I’ve emailed you.

Twenty years ago, just before the Republicans’ stunning victory in the 1994 Clinton midterms, I also received a string of increasingly desperate-sounding mail – the paper kind – from the Democratic Party. Curious to see how the party was treating small donors, I contributed $10. After that, I got a series of progressively worried entreaties; by October 1994, Democratic fundraisers sounded as if they knew disaster was on the way. Turned out it was.

That was my last political contribution until this week, when, hoping to get a better look at Democrats’ small-donor technique, I finally clicked the $5 contribution box on President Obama’s email.

You’d think that would have made them happy.

But no – they immediately wanted more.

First they tried to get me to increase my contribution.

I declined. Then they asked I make my contribution an automatic monthly donation. I declined.

At the very least, I thought my $5 would buy a tiny respite from the crush of emails. It did not.

Can this continue until November? Yes, it can. But if Democrats already sound this frantic in August, it’s going to be a very long fall.

Foley’s murder exposes militants’ evil Those who serve as foreign correspondents in dangerous places are often asked: “Why would you put yourself in harm’s way?”

The answer typically is that the life gets in one’s blood, and the excitement produces an adrenaline rush.

Some correspondents spend virtually their entire working lives overseas, dodging bullets and chemical weapons and guerrilla fighters.

James Foley, a freelance photojournalist, lived that kind of life after growing up in the small town of Rochester, New Hampshire.

Foley now has become the latest journalist targeted by militants, this time the Islamic State, an offshoot

of al-Qaida. A video posted Wednesday showed Foley being beheaded, and a knife-wielding fighter promised that more American captives would die because of U.S. strikes on Islamic fighters in northern Iraq.

Life means little to these militants who slay children, women, aid workers and journalists.

They kill for revenge and indiscriminately. James Foley was not a soldier in the field against them. He was doing his very dangerous job.

Americans know such work is risky, from the World Wars and Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan where journalists have been at risk in the midst of combat. But

in early 2002, a Wall Street Journal reporter, Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped by Pakistani militants and killed on camera while on assignment in Pakistan. Like Foley, Pearl was no stranger to the hazards of his profession.

But Pearl’s murder showed that militants behind a particular ideology were willing to take any step, commit any act, to make their point.

Foreign correspondents will carry on, because that is what they do.

James Foley’s work showed the suffering that comes with war.

In death, he showed the Islamic State’s evil to the world.

‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ worth wait

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now “Sin City,” the groundbreaking, eye-popping, green screen-filled adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic books, was released in 2005. A sequel was announced almost immediately. It’s been a long time between that announcement and this new film, which is neither a prequel nor a sequel ... or maybe it’s both a prequel and a sequel. That part doesn’t matter; what matters is that it was worth the wait.

It’s great being back in Basin City, with its bizarre characters and quease-inducing situations. It likely won’t be great for anyone who hasn’t seen the first film, as many references to it are made. And it’s a bad idea for anyone who did see the first one and was completely turned off by its unflinching celebration of unspeakable violence, because that factor is upped here by about tenfold.

Most of the characters are back, though a few are played by different actors.

Not to worry, big Mickey

Rourke returns as big-hearted, extremely dangerous, and often confused Marv; Powers Booth is slimier than ever as power-crazed Senator Roark; and Jessica Alba proves she still knows how to pole dance as Nancy. But Josh Brolin has taken over Clive Owen’s role as Dwight; Dennis Haysbert now has the late Michael Clarke Duncan’s part of golden-eyed, pain-inflicting Manute (and we learn, in gruesome detail, how that golden eye came to be); and Jamie Chung has replaced Devon Aoki as “deadly little” Miho.

There are new characters to meet, the two most intriguing among them being slick and cool Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who comes to town with intentions of winning at the casino, and Ava (Eva Green, an actress who seems to very much enjoy parading around naked), the green-eyed, crimson-lipped dame of the title.

Different stories come spinning out of this movie like tires in its high-speed car chases. Some of them stand

alone, while others intertwine with each other. There are less rules in the telling of these stories than there are in lawless “Basin City.”

But there are certainly follow-through lines. For instance, like its predecessor, there is visual dazzle from frame one. The film is mostly in the starkest of black & white, with piercing spots of color that know just where to exist – such as Ava’s eyes and lips. Robert Rodriguez, who produced, directed, edited, photographed (and, hell, even wrote some of the music), makes the whites of people’s eyes glow brightly.

And while plenty of folks will be in the audience just because they like the look of the film, an equal number will be there for its audacity.

That previously mentioned violence, much of it done with guns and swords and fists and (watch out!) pliers, is fast and brutal. Same goes for the presentation of sex.

There are rugged fistfights, lots of backstabbing (both physical and emotional), decapitations galore, and a

steady diet of people crashing through windows – sometimes of their own free will, sometimes because they’re thrown.

If you actually need a story to go with all of this, oh, there are stories. Once again, it would be a good idea to know what happened in the first film before experiencing this one. That would make it a lot easier to understand why Dwight is trying so hard to forget so many of his bad memories, and would make it crystal clear why Nancy has revenge on her mind.

But there are plenty of fans who will be satisfied by witnessing the film’s generous amount of heavy drinking, or maybe its visits with the scantily clad, weapon-toting women of Old Town, or its suggestions that both lust and power have the ability to drive men mad.

Me? I rather enjoyed the outrageously cartoonish violence and the snappy, hardboiled dialogue, such as when an annoyed Dwight says to Ava, “I was born at night, but not last night.”

Choosing the right shoe can relieve bunion pain Dear Doctor K: I have a painful bunion. What is the best way to treat it?

Dear Reader: A bunion occurs when two bones in your foot no longer line up properly. Normally, a bone in the foot lines up straight with the first bone in your big toe. With a bunion, the joint where those two bones meet no longer is straight. Instead, there’s knobby bone bulging outward at the base of your big toe. And the big toe itself turns inward, bending toward, or even under, the other toes. As a result, the knobby bone at the base of your big toe points outward.

Bunions are a common cause of painful toes. One cause of bunions is thought to be years of wearing shoes that squeeze the toes into pointed or narrow toe boxes, forcing the toes to fold over one another. Since women wear such shoes, and since bunions are more common in women than men, that seems reasonable.

On the other hand, plenty of my female patients wear shoes that should torture their toes – but they don’t all get bunions.

And some of my male patients

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff have bunions. There’s also pretty good evidence that bunions run in families. So I doubt we really know all the causes of bunions.

Over time, a bunion can become extremely painful. You can relieve the pain by padding the bunion with felt, moleskin or a doughnut-shaped pad. Hot and cold compresses may help. Or try stretching the bunion area of your shoe with a shoe stretcher.

Orthotic shoe inserts can redistribute your weight so the bunion doesn’t constantly rub against your shoe. NSAID pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can also help relieve pain and inflammation. If these steps don’t work, surgery can restore your toe to its normal position. The surgery is a safe procedure, but you can’t walk on the foot for several weeks, so your mobility is affected. You need crutches or other devices to walk, and using stairs is tricky.

While surgery doesn’t always relieve all the symptoms, patients are generally happy with the result. If you decide to undergo surgery, the specific procedure will depend on the severity of your condition. To treat a mild bunion, for example, the surgeon might shave the enlarged portion of the bone before realigning nearby muscles, tendons and ligaments.

To correct severe bunions, the surgeon must cut and then realign a portion of the displaced bone in the toe. Pins, screws or plates will keep the bone in position. (I’ve put an illustration of the toe before and after this procedure on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

To prevent bunions from developing, or to prevent an existing bunion from getting worse, wear shoes with roomy toe boxes.

While shoes may not be the sole cause of bunions, they can aggravate the condition.

Dr. Wallace: I’m an average teenager. I get above-average grades and do my share of work around the house.

I don’t have specific chores, but I help my mom and dad whenever they need it. I’m an only child and, luckily, our family doesn’t have any serious communication problems. Everything at home was running smoothly – no real teen-parent problems.

Then one day my dad reads some article in a magazine written by an “expert” on teen behavior who advises parents to use a weekly “points system. The teen has to earn 25 points from Saturday morning to the following Sunday morning, and if the teen fails to reach the number, he is punished according to his earned credits.

I agreed to go on the point system only after a rather heated argument, which my father won.

The first week I earned 20 points. Since I was short 5 points, I had my allowance cut from $10 to $5. The next week I earned 21 points, which meant I had a 10 p.m. curfew on Saturday night. Dr. Wallace: How safe are condoms in avoiding pregnancy and avoiding sexually transmitted diseases? – Nameless, Batavia, Illinois Dear Nameless:: A certified school nurse contacted me to share with our teen readers who were sexually active that condoms have about a 13 percent failure rate in preventing pregnancy and are even less effective for preventing sexually transmitted diseases. The nurse cautioned that condoms can break and, if not used correctly, can fail.

I agree that condoms must be used by teens who choose to become sexually active, but latex condoms should be used, not natural membrane condoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory studies show that latex condoms provide a continuous barrier to microorganisms as well as sperm. Natural membrane condoms cannot make this claim.

Teens who become sexually active are living dangerously. Mother Nature makes it very easy for a female to become pregnant during sexual contact, regardless of the protection used. Sexual abstinence never fails to provide peace of mind.

At the bridge table, if you can legally distract your opponents, it will probably be to your advantage. How do you do that? By producing unexpected bids or, especially, plays.

Do you see something distracting in this deal? South is in three notrump. West leads his fourth-highest heart. East wins with his ace and returns the heart six. What happens after that?

Note that despite holding 30 combined high-card points, three no-trump seems destined to fail.

Let’s assume South takes the second trick with his heart king and West plays the two to indicate that he started with a five-card suit.

Declarer should cross to the dummy with a club and call for the diamond jack, trying to look like someone about to take a finesse for the queen.

But East should not be distracted.

He should realize that his partner has three heart winners, grab the trick with his ace, and lead his last heart, which results in down one.

At my bridge camp in Highlands, North Caronlina, in June, one player found a great way to distract West. Bill Geary of New Orleans, knowing that he was going to win only one heart trick, dropped his king under East’s ace at trick one!

When East led back the heart six, West should have ducked to keep communication with his partner.

But he distractedly won with his queen and played a third heart. Now Geary drove out the diamond ace and came home with an overtrick.
