Pam Heavens, executive director for the WGCIL, said she’s “very excited” about the upcoming event, which is centered around the 1939 classic starring Judy Garland.

For a $50 ticket, guests can enjoy dinner, dancing, a photo booth, raffle drawings and a live auction. Members of the center’s fundraising committee will be dressed in Wizard of Oz-themed costumes, Heavens said.

The name of the event – “Yellow Brick Road to Independence” – encompasses the center’s mission, Heavens said.

On September 24, 1977, Debbie married Victor Howard in the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington.

Debbie’s previous employment entailed Kevin’s Corner in Braidwood as well as Wilmington Lanes.

She was an avid animal lover, who took pleasure in camping and fishing. Debbie enjoyed traveling and game nights, playing cards.

Many memorable times were made picnicking and poolside with a good bloody Mary. Debbie will be remembered for her courageous defeat of cancer and her never ending love of family and her grandchildren.

Snapping a photo of the bricks and posting to the center’s Facebook pages, calling in by phone or notifying the center via email, people can enter into a drawing for a year’s supply of yogurt from The Country’s Best Yogurt, also known as TCBY, in Shorewood.

Liking the center’s Facebook page will also enter you into the drawing, Heavens said.

Daily clues are posted on the center’s social media pages, but there’s no need to wait for those to come out each day. A list of the sponsors is available on the center’s website.

“I hated school with a passion,” Dumbauld said. “Nothing interested me, and I wasn’t good at arithmetic.”

It took him 10 years to graduate from grade school, but he got it done, and never looked back – or forward – to high school.

Dumbauld didn’t receive a high school diploma but received a lifetime education when he was drafted in 1946 to the U.S. Army.

“I got my training in the service. I went to mechanic school and stayed in 13 months before getting out and going to diesel school in St. Louis,” Dumbauld said.

He was a jack of all trades, working as a Merchant Marine on the Illinois River, as a service manager at a car dealership, and finally owning his own business.

He bought and built kit cars using a Volkswagen chassis; he built the rest of the car from the ground up.

He took an old Volkswagen Beetle, cut it apart and created a custom truck.

In 1957, he started building kit planes. He had a local pilot test fly this first ultralight air-

Bob Dumbauld turned his garage into a workroom, so he can continue to tinker with everything mechanical during his retirement. plane because he didn’t know how to fly – yet.

“I taught myself to fly with the ultralight, and I took lessons in a Cessna,” he said.

Ron Terry of Seneca said Dumbauld is one of the most interesting people he’s met, and he often works with him on projects. The two had a mutual love of Ultralight planes and could be found together at Terry’s home in Seneca with one of the small aircraft.

“When I flew the ultralights, it was a feeling I can’t describe,” Dumbauld said.

“That’s really something, when you get off the ground and look down at the countryside.”

But owning an ultralight caused another issue – how would he transport it? He built a 20-foot trailer to haul the aircraft from one location to the next.

Once he found he could build a trailer he decided to build his own teardrop travel trailer and he started welding the axles together. He built the trailers from scratch and used different plans to create the

perfect recreational vehicle.

After a few trailers were built, he moved on to watercraft. The first boat he built was from a Sears & Roebuck kit.

In 1999, he rebuilt a hovercraft, and later, he customized other boats to hold his fishing poles.

For 10 years he had a cabin in Northern Wisconsin where he did a lot of fishing, so he had to have the proper fishing boat.

After attacking and conquering every plane, boat and

automobile, Dumbauld decided it was time to jump on the next bandwagon – computers.

After he retired from his automotive shop Dumbauld taught himself how to work on computers and he bought, rebuilt and debugged desktop computers in the workshop in his garage.

“I started buying, selling and repairing computers before iPad came out. I’m not an electronic-type person, but I could replace a hard drive and put in Windows,” he said. “I sold a lot of them.”

With more people switching to laptops and iPads, Dumbauld has moved on to the next phase of his industrious life.

Three years ago he started fixing riding lawn mowers, and he’s even sold a few.

“I love mechanics, I love repairing things,” he said. “I do the repair work that others shake their head at. I just love doing something people appreciate.”

Most days he can be found sitting his his garage turned workroom among lockers filled with drills and containers full of nuts and bolts, just where he wants to be.

“I’ve traveled in a motor home, went fishing in Wisconsin, I haven’t completely ignored my wife Bev,” he said.

“But now I’m just comfortable here, the way it is now.”

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Equipped with a police scanner, emergency radio and weather alert systems, Morris resident Tim Pfaff is prepared for unpredictable weather.

But Pfaff is still on the fence about buying a city-subsidized weather alert radio. The radios were made available over the past three months.

“I’m still thinking about it,” he said. “It’s good to play it safe. The weather is interesting. You never know what it’s going to do.”

In June, Morris began distributing Midland Weather Alert radios to residents at a discounted cost of $10, but the city was unable to sell all the radios it purchased.

Of the 800 devices on hand, the city distributed 695, according to Morris Fire Commissioner Robert Coleman.

“We budgeted for 2,500, but we ordered 800 this first time around, just to see. We could always order more,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

However, the city is not likely to purchase more unless demand grows. While he is happy with the program, Kopczick said he hoped to have all the radios distributed by now.

“I’m just curious. Do people already have them? Do they not care? Do they think $10 is too much?” Kopczick said.

“If we don’t have any great demand coming for it, we won’t purchase anymore,” he added.

The battery-powered radios are linked with the National Weather Service and are programmed to broadcast localized severe weather alerts directly from the weather service.

Sold at several major retailers and recommended by the Department of Homeland Security for emergency preparedness, the radios cost anywhere from $30 to $40 when purchased new.

The Morris weather alert radio distribution program wrapped up Friday, but the city still has about 105 radios for sale. The city subsidized the radios, so they are available for $10. a lower cost thanks to a partnership with Walgreens.

“We were the first municipality to partner with Walgreens on this,” Coleman said.

Since implementing the radio distribution in Morris, Coleman said he’s been contacted by community leaders

from area municipalities who also want to pursue the program.

The radio purchase is a result of Morris’s long-term natural disaster mitigation plan, enacted last year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency required the city to en-

act the plan to receive federal funding.

Ensuring every household had a NWS-certified radio was included in that mitigation plan.

“Really, it’s about saving lives,” Kopczick said.

Although the distribution

program officially ended Friday, the city is selling the remaining 105 radios. To purchase one, residents should bring a copy of their most recent water bill to City Hall.

“I hope that if anyone would still like one, they would call City Hall,” Kopczick said.

Unique perspective sets 6-year-old’s photos apart

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – What started with Olivia Peterson toying around with her parents’ cellphone cameras led to a local art gallery showing for the 6-year-old.

Peterson’s interest in photography was piqued while using her parents’ phones to take pictures of things that interested her.

That love led to her first camera, which she got for her sixth birthday in June.

“It’s fun because you can take any picture you want,” she said.

After she started taking photos with her Canon Powershot, she decided she needed to do something with them, so like any digital photographer, she loaded them onto her home computer.

Since her father is a photographer, she had access to photo editing software, and she wanted to learn how to make her photographs even better.

“I showed her how to edit her first photograph and then she took over and did it on her own,” her dad, Adam Peterson, said.

The longer she took photos, the more she slowed down as the family went places.

“I thought she was just doing it for fun,” her mother, Trisha Peterson, said. “When we went to the zoo, she’d just take pictures.”

When she’d stop to take photos in a parking lot, her father would think, “Why are you taking that?”

“When I saw them on the computer, I realized she had such a cool perspective of the world around her,” he said.

One set of images from the parking lot at Disney World’s Epcot in Florida showed everything from tires to the word “Stop” written on the pavement.

“When I looked at them, they were amazing,” Adam Peterson said. “I said, ‘I’m never rushing this child again.’”

Her father isn’t the only one who thinks her photographs are amazing. Local art gallery owner Lonnie Mathison, who owns Lonnie’s Arts Gallery, heard about them from her

dad and decided to have a look.

“I hear quite often from people, ‘My son or my daughter is good,’” Mathison said.

“But when Adam said the photos shocked him, I thought, I want to see them.”

Mathison purchased one of Olivia Peterson’s original prints for his own collection.

It’s just one of five photographs he has purchased from artists.

“When you purchase a photograph, you are buying their eye and the way they see the world,” Mathison said. “Olivia chooses great subject matter.”

According to her teacher Mary Korthauer, Lunden loved spending time with her classmates.

“She had a really, really good support group, and her family has been the same thing for us in the classroom,” Korthauer said. “So it doesn’t surprise me that the first thing they thought to do was something for the school. That’s just the kind of people they are.”

At school, Lunden fell in love with the children’s book character Pete the Cat, featured in several books. Lunden’s Pete the Cat doll was so beloved that it made it into her official school photo.

“She always had Pete the Cat with her. Just always,” Chappell said.

For Saturday’s auction, the family secured signed copies of Pete the Cat, sent directly from the book’s author and illustrator, who were moved by the Chappells’ story.

MORRIS – Those who knew 3-year-old Lunden Chappell say she was full of energy, constantly moving and laughing, and brought joy to her classmates, teachers and loved ones.

Last May, Lunden’s family received the shock of their life when the Wilmington girl was found accidentally drowned in a pond.

“She was a very, very, smart little girl and a lot of fun,” remembered Beth Chappell, Lunden’s aunt.

To honor Lunden’s memory, the Chappell family started the Lunden Chappell Memorial Fund, raising money for local families in need and the Reed-Custer Primary School, where Lunden was enrolled in a special education preschool program.

The first-ever fundraiser for the memorial fund is scheduled for Saturday in Coal City.

The event will feature family entertainment from nationally known juggler Andy Head, as well as a silent auction and raffle.

“This benefit is not raising money for the family. That’s not what this is for. It’s to benefit [Lunden’s] school, which helped her so much, and it’s for local families in the area that have needs,” Chappell said. “Specifically families that might have children who are ill, children with special needs or maybe a family who has had a child pass away.”

10 Local employees combat the negative effects of sedentary jobs

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Jean Koerner of Coal City knows she has a sedentary job.

A bookkeeper in the Grundy County administration building for 26 years, she has been a bookkeeper for a total of 34 years.

Koerner exercises during her free time. She bicycles around the neighborhood with her daughter and granddaughter, and does calisthenics at home.

But last fall, when an email circulated through the administration building announcing a lunchtime exercise program, Koerner decided to participate.

“It sounded like fun,” she said.

The group, The Walking Warriors, began the program by walking outside. When the winter weather hit, they moved inside to the board room, where they exercised to a DVD walking program.

“The more you exercise, the healthier you are,” Koerner said. “It’s important muscular-wise and cardiovascular-wise. And I just feel better when I exercise.”

Grundy County Director of Nursing Judy Bailey organized the group. When The Walking Warriors are not walking outside, they walk in place and perform side-to-side movements, squats, leg lifts and other exercises.

The DVDs are suitable for every fitness level, Bailey said.

As a health professional, Bailey knows the negative effects of being too sedentary. It affects metabolism, she said, and circulation.

She found the actual exercises, while promoting fitness, had an extra bonus.

“It also helped us with our stress levels during the day,” Bailey said.

She also hits the gym before work three mornings a week. She, too, notices additional perks from exercising.

“It makes it easier to chase the kids around,” McCarthy said, “and I like to be a good role model for them, too.”

It’s a fun group, too, she said, and the members enjoy talking with each other during their workouts.

“It gives me more energy for the afternoon,” McCarthy said. “It’s a good mental break.

It’s something I look forward to.”

It’s smart strategy on the part of The Walking Warriors.

Family physician Dr. Deirdre Greathouse, with C&R Medical Group at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, said the harmful health effects of working a sedentary job are too great even to be overcome by exercising after hours.

“Eight hours is a long time to be sedentary,” she said.

The prolonged inactivity, she said, increases the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome,

obesity, varicose veins, leg cramps and back pain. Sitting all day also can accelerate degeneration of the bones in people who have osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.

A 2013 study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity suggests that getting up and moving every 30 minutes might be a good idea.

Greathouse said incorporating an exercise plan into a lunch period is a great idea.

Nurses on her floor walk up and down a stairwell for exercise during their lunch breaks.

She also recommended parking a good distance from the workplace entrance, leg exercises while sitting at the desk, and getting up frequently to walk around the office building.

A quick walk also is a good way relieve midday fatigue, she added, much better than drinking energy drinks, which can be harmful to one’s health.

The American Heart Association has advice on how to incorporate physical activity into sedentary workplaces, at www.heart.org.

• Physically active jobs now make up only about 25 percent of the workforce.

• America’s average work week keeps getting longer. Today, we work 164 more hours a year than we did 20 years ago.

• Heart disease is this country’s No. 1 killer. Exercising for as little as 30 minutes each day can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Employees that add physical activity to their sedentary jobs experience: • Increased well-being, self-image and self-esteem.

• Improved coping skills with stress or other factors affecting health.

• Improved health.

• Lower costs for acute health issues.

• Lower out-of-pocket costs for health care services (such as reduced premiums, deductibles and co-payments).

• Increased access to health promotion resources and social support.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – A dispute among neighbors in what would seem like a tranquil residential setting has led to an order of protection, an arrest and two sides pointing surveillance cameras at each other.

The neighbors were in Will County Court on Tuesday on a motion to determine whether a “stalking-no contact” order Mary Williams has applied for will be issued against Donald R. Kinzler.

The dispute had already escalated by Sunday, when Kinzler, 52, turned himself in to Braidwood police and was charged with criminal trespassing and vandalism.

Kinzler is the engineering project manager in the Channahon Public Works Department.

Kinzler, who resides in the 700 block of West Kennedy Road, had previously been served with a court order of protection accusing him of stalking Williams, who lives in the house next door.

Kinzler’s and Williams’ residences back up to a large pond that has been frequented by ducks and geese. Williams and her husband, Ken Banderman, said they’ve fed the waterfowl, but Kinzler has shot the birds with paintballs, thrown rocks

Before discussing how to get teeth whiter, let’s start with what makes teeth darker. Smoking, red wine, dark soda, coffee, and tea are just some examples of substances that tend to stain teeth making them look darker. At the same time, certain medications can stain teeth as well. And the only way to remove those stains is by a dental professional cleaning. No amount of brushing will remove stain. Teeth that are stained will also not bleach well. There are different options for bleaching teeth. Any whitening toothpaste will give marginal results.The over the counter whitening strips work relatively well, but often do not stick well on the teeth. The most important factor in any whitening is how much hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is in the product.

The higher the percentage, the more teeth will bleach. But at the same time, the higher the percentage, the more likely that you will be sensitive. A dental professional typically has two methods of bleaching. The first way is through bleaching trays. Custom trays are fabricated that fit to your teeth and you are given strong bleach material to use in the trays. Typical results occur after two weeks.

The other method is in-office bleaching, where teeth are bleached in an hour. Patients go home with whiter teeth. Sensitivity is highest with the in-office bleaching. For the best results, a combination of the in-office bleaching and bleaching trays is the way to go.

Mathison then offered Olivia a chance to show and sell her work at her own gallery show, complete with a “Meet the Artist” reception.

“A lot of people came, more than I thought,” Olivia said.

Olivia Peterson said she likes post-production work almost as much as taking photos. She lightens them, makes the shadows lighter or darker depending on what she likes.

She also makes them different colors.

“I make the whites brighter and I put either a black or a white edge on the pictures,” she said. “It’s fun because you can make it look how you want.”

Her favorite photo is one she took of her own shadow falling against lush green grass.

Her advice to other young people who want to take photos is to start with their mom’s and dad’s phones.

Politicians’ spats don’t belong in the courts Even in the no-holdsbarred world of Texas politics, the indictment of Gov. Rick Perry last week was a low blow. A grand jury in Austin, a Democratic Party hotbed, indicted Perry, a Republican with presidential aspirations, on two felony counts for allegedly abusing his power. His offense? Threatening to veto funding for the county district attorney’s Public Integrity Unit unless District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, a Democrat, resigned. But the Texas governor has the legal authority to veto spending, which makes the dispute between Perry and Lehmberg essentially a political one. And the courts are the wrong place to settle political scores.

The Public Integrity Unit has long been a thorn in Texas Republicans’ side, having brought criminal charges against then-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (prosecutors ultimately abandoned the case) and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (his convictions were overturned on appeal). More recently, it spent more than a year probing grant-making decisions by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, an agency that has been championed by Perry.

Lehmberg, meanwhile, had worked at the Travis County district attorney’s office for 32 years before voters elected her to the top job there in 2008 and 2012. In 2013, county sheriff’s deputies pulled her over on suspicion of drunken driving, and videos from the scene and the jail captured her intoxicated belligerence as she was arrested and booked. Although she quickly pleaded guilty to the charge, Republicans said her behavior showed she was

unfit to oversee the Public Integrity Unit.

There seems to be little dispute over what happened next. Eager to oust Lehmberg, Perry zeroed out the Public Integrity Unit from the 2013-14 budget, but offered to restore the funding if she stepped down. Had Lehmberg done so, Perry would have been able to name a replacement, presumably a Republican, to run the office until the general election this November. Lehmberg refused.

This is hardball politics, and it’s ugly to see a governor try to superimpose his will over the local voters’.

But it’s not illegal. (Nor, by the way, did the budget cut end the unit’s work.) And yet the complaint that led to Perry’s indictment at the hands of a special prosecutor and a Travis County grand jury accused him of nothing else.

The courts certainly have a role to play in stopping officials from taking steps that are beyond the bounds of statute or the Constitution.

They do not, however, belong in the middle of a fight between politicians over policy or power. If lawmakers can’t muster the votes to overturn a spending veto or repeal a law they don’t like, they shouldn’t run to the judicial branch for help. That’s just as true for Washington Republicans aggravated by the continuation of Obamacare as it is for Austin Democrats aggrieved by the governing style of Rick Perry. They should find a way to win either the debate or more elections.

Highway to the danger zone Remember MacGyver? He was the fictional television secret agent of 1980s television who would get out of world-threatening jams using only duct tape and a Swiss Army knife.

Listening to Pope Francis in Korea the other day, I had some flashbacks to the primetime show.

Pope Francis, who has described the Church as a field hospital, doesn’t even need hardware-store items; he bandages wounds with invitations to the Gospel and the sacraments of the church.

As Christians and other religious minorities are being forced out of Iraq; as tear gas was used on protesters after the death of an unarmed young man in Missouri; as news reports continued to go into graphic detail about the suicide of the beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams; as North Koreans couldn’t attend any of his Masses in their divided country, Pope Francis pointed to hope.

He said: “The hope held out by the Gospel is the antidote to the spirit of despair that seems to grow like a cancer in societies which are outwardly

In civilization that has become so secularized – even hostile – to real religious faith, Pope Francis reminds Christians that living their faith in the public square – in every aspect of life – and sharing it is part of their Gospel mandate. Also, do not be robbed, he’s said, of “community” and “fraternal love,” and, perhaps most importantly, joy.

“The human heart aspires to great things, to important values, to profound friendships, bonds that are strengthened rather than broken by the trials of life,” Pope Francis said earlier this summer.

“Human beings aspire to be loved, and to be loved definitively. Do not let yourselves be robbed of the desire to construct great and solid things in

your lives! Do not be satisfied with half-measures!”

Warm feelings abound about Francis, certainly. But what is the Pope saying? His point is that we were created for a life so much better than the one we’re currently living.

Not pain-free, mind you, but one where suffering matters, where it is redemptive.

If a few more of us lived Christian hope, the rest of the world might see the difference and want it for themselves, or at least want people of real religious faith around. Until then, Western culture will become increasingly intolerant of people who want to live their faith in the world.

For the sake of Christians the world over who will live and die for their faith, we ought to work some MacGyver moves of our own, joining Pope Francis in trying to end the highway robbery that we’ve brought upon ourselves, and even acquiesced to. The highway to heaven is a whole lot better.

MORRIS – When it comes to golf, the lower number is usually best way to go. In the case of the Morris boys golf team, however, it’s a high number that has coach Matt Lafond excited.

The Redskins have 20 players in the program entering the 2014 season, and a bulk of those are freshmen or sophomores.

“When I see numbers like that, I think future,” Lafond said. “That’s not to take anything away from our seniors and juniors. They are very good golfers. But, to see this many freshmen and sophomores that are out, and that are good golfers, is exciting.”

The seniors for the Redskins are Dalton Onsen, Hailey Hoagland, Kendall Enger and Gabe Sajnaj, and they will be four of the eight Lafond will count as members of the varsity team.

The other four spots are up for grabs, with juniors Nick McPherson and Nick Bomono and sophomores Jake Hulbert and Dylan Callahan in the mix heading into today’s season-opening match at Dwight.

“Of course, that could all change three weeks into the season,” Lafond said. “We make changes throughout the year based on how they play in practice and how they do in competition. Sometimes, you get that player that hits an extra gear when the competition starts and just has that extra focus or concentration.

One thing that will help the Redskins is the presence of Morris Country Club professional John Keegan, who has been instrumental in giving the Morris team instruction.

“Help is an understatement for what Mr. Keegan has done for us,” Lafond said. “He makes sure we get time on the course, even if he has another event going on. He will work around us, and that is such a big help

for us.

“And I have seen a lot of our kids playing out here this summer, which is good. Even if they aren’t playing, if they are working out here, just being around the game and talking about it and listening to others talk about it, it all helps out. I can see it in the improvement of the kids.”

Lafond hopes to see improvement throughout the season from his young group.

“Of course, every team is looking for that weekend of Oct. 18th, the state tournament,” he said. “Realistically, I think we have a very good shot at getting out of the regional, then we will see what happens. In the conference, we have the power schools of Kaneland, DeKalb and Yorkville, but we have some individuals that have some high expectations and I don’t think they are wrong about that. I think we can advance some guys pretty far.

“And we have the young guys below that will be pushing all year. That will be nice to see because competition tends to bring out the best in players.

NEW LENOX – The girls golf teams from Providence Catholic, Minooka and Lincoln-Way Central all have high hopes as they kick off the 2014 season.

That’s why it wasn’t too surprising that the three squads were on pretty competitive terms when they met up Tuesday for Central’s triangular at The Sanctuary Golf Course.

The Celtics, who opened their season the day before at the Marian Catholic Invite, took top honors with a 183, while the Indians (189) edged the Knights (190) in both squads’ debut.

Providence’s Alyssa Gromala, a returning state qualifier, took medalist honors with a round of 41, while Celtic teammate Annie Corso and Knight Anna Suppes both fired 44s.

The Celtics, who have qualified for sectionals the past two years, also received a 46 from

Anna Goggins and Angela Duensing turned in a 52.

“We have a strong returning team,” Celtics coach Molly Schulte said. “Alyssa has put in a lot of work this summer; and the same goes for Anna, who’s been playing well lately, and Annie had a great round today.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget series makes its return to the Grundy County Speedway on Saturday night for the D’Arcy GMC Summer Pavement Nationals presented by Bell Helmets. Though the Shoot-Out is only four years old, it quickly has established itself as one of the premier races on the pavement midget racing calendar.

The total purse of more than $14,000 with a winner’s share of $3,500 has the STARS Midget competitors taking notice.

The race is also Round 2 of the Safety-Kleen Triple Crown, which could net Illinois State Championship feature winner Nick Baran a $2,000 bonus at the end of the season.

If he is unable to win Saturday night’s race, the shift turns to which driver can earn the most points throughout the Triple Crown, which concludes with the Alex Pruett Memorial on Sept. 27. The driver and team that accomplishes that feat will earn a $750 bonus.

In the first year of the Pavement Nationals in 2011, it was Auburn native and Grundy County Speedway’s one-lap track record holder in

a midget, Mario Clouser, who took the checkered flag. The two most recent editions of the race were won by a pair of drivers who have been familiar faces in victory lane this season: Austin Prock and Kyle Hamilton. Hamilton, the 2012 winner, has only run a limited schedule this season, taking part in only four features, but has won two of them. Prock, who won the most recent Pavement Nationals event in 2013, is coming off yet another win a week ago at Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Prock, who leads the STARS point standings, is also batting .500 this year after winning his fourth race in the eight features.

Hamilton, the Danville, Indiana, native who makes his home in West Lafayette, Indi-

ana during the school year as a student at Purdue University, has shown his prowess at Grundy County in recent years, particularly in the 50lap features. In fact, all five of Hamilton’s midget wins at Grundy have come in the 50-lappers.

The purse of $14,075 for the Pavement Nationals is the biggest payout of the STARS season. The pursuit of big money is an enticement for drivers to step up their game The recent internet phenomenon, the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge,” has Hamilton getting involved in the fundraising campaign for a great cause.

“I don’t really see the money that is earned from race wins,” he said. “We put that money back into the pot that

keeps us racing throughout the season, although, this week will be a little different.

I was challenged by a few people to do the ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge,’ so I’ll donate a portion of my winnings to the ALS Foundation along with completing the challenge.”

Along with the STARS National Midgets, the D’Arcy GMC Summer Pavement Nationals presented by Bell Helmets features the STARS Classic Modifieds, INEX Legends, CSR Super Cups and Legacy Midwest Series. Adult tickets are $12. Kids ages 5 to 12 get in for $2. Children age 4 and younger are free.

Grandstands open up at 5 p.m.

Racing starts at 6:30. Grundy County Speedway is located one mile north of Interstate 80 on Route 47 in Morris.

Conte eager to return to mix on the defense

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – Considering all Chris Conte has endured over the past seven months, perhaps the toughest part has been not being physically able to completely move on from his recent past.

Conte underwent offseason surgery to repair his right shoulder, forcing him to miss the Bears’ entire offseason program and most of training camp before being cleared to return Aug. 10. At the same time, he was left to deal with a barrage of criticism leveled against him for his play in the Bears’ regular-season loss to the Packers. As much as he has tried to ignore outside opinion, constantly being reminded of his shortcomings made not being able to get back on the field even more difficult.

“It’s been a long time coming. [It’s] just been a lot of time watching other guys play. But I get the opportunity this week to just go out there and play football.”

Chris Conte Bears safety Coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday he expects the veteran safety to play in Friday’s preseason game in Seattle. How much time Conte will see or what his role will be has yet to be determined.

But after months of not being able to get onto the field, having his return only days away has brought Conte’s stressful offseason to an end.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Conte said Wednesday. “[It’s] just been a lot of time watching other guys play.

But I get the opportunity this week to just go out there and

play football.”

Conte has made 40 starts over the past three seasons.

Even though he wasn’t cleared until this month to return to the field and the ongoing competition between veterans Ryan Mundy, Adrian Wilson, Danny McCray and rookie Brock Vereen has gone on without Conte, Bears coaches left the door open that he again could move back into a starting role.

Trestman said he likes what he has seen from Conte.

“He’s had a good week of practice,” Trestman said.

“He’s running around. He’s involved in terms of what we’re doing. So we’ll see.”

At times, Conte has found it difficult to remain engaged mentally, especially lately, when he felt like his body was ready for him to rejoin his teammates on the field.

Despite remaining sidelined, Conte has been an active participant in the safeties’ meeting room, digesting defensive back coach Jon Hoke’s game plan.

His teammates are impressed with how Conte has kept himself in the game, albeit while doing it while being physically unable to go.

“It’s been cool to see,” McCray said Wednesday. “I know how it feels not to be able to practice and play, and so it’s good to see him get out there and get his feet back under him. It looks like he’s moving pretty fast.”

Conte’s biggest test will come Friday against the Seahawks. Trestman is excited to see whether Conte can show coaches that he is worthy of the consideration they’ve given him to return to the starting lineup. Physically, Conte insists he is ready, which he said will aid in mentally shaking off last year’s struggles.

Asked Wednesday whether it’s easier said than done to put last year behind him, Conte paused, considering his words.

“I don’t know,” Conte said.

“It’s just something where you just have to go out there and play football. I don’t know if it’s easy, hard or what, but it’s just something you have to do.

“It’s a different defense now and it’s a new year, and you have to treat it that way.

I just have to try and get out there and do my job.”

Fictional essay takes readers 379 years into the future

By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now In the fictional essay “The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future,” authors Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway take us 379 years into the future.

A scholar in the Second People’s Republic of China enumerates the reasons why scientists failed to avert the catastrophic environmental crisis that redrew the world and annihilated millions.

The scholar does not dwell on the scope of the disaster that dates back to 2093.We do learn that rising sea levels overtake some countries, while others, like the United States, reduced in size and resources, regroup with lesser clout and fewer resources. China, we discover, emerges as a world leader.

On the tercentenary anniversary of Western civilization’s demise, the scholar searches for reasons why scientists didn’t act when data gathered, analyzed, published and shared at conferences all but guaranteed the disaster. The scientists, who require at least a 95 percent confidence level in their work, are too reticent in the face of ever-alarming data.

A neoliberal stronghold in Western civilization — particularly the United States and Canada — is also to blame.

Opposed to any governmental involvement in free enterprise, ideologues thwart any centralized attempts to intervene in the degradation of the environment. The absence of an empowered government means that it cannot quickly respond to the growing climate crisis in the same way that China, with its traditionally strong centralized government, can.

The powerful communist rule that the United States so avidly feared now holds a commanding role in the world order.

Also responsible is the “carbon-combustion complex” — that conglomeration of fossil fuel companies, the automobile industry, utilities, and the many others that want to support and maintain their obscenely profitable status quo and who, of course, lose

everything in the collapse of culture as they know it.

This short read, like “California,” another book I recently reviewed, speculates on a near future that’s imagined from the facts at hand. The authors of “The Collapse of Western Civilization” are historians with strong science backgrounds.

Oreskes is a professor of the history of science at Harvard University and professor of earth and planetary sciences. Conway is a historian of science and technology.

Their book includes a joint interview with Oreskes and Conway, a lexicon of

archaic terms and extensive notes. The book is based on existing science and posits a strong point of view — global warming is real and dangerous; thus, there are those who may find it objectionable.

It will preach to the proverbial choir. Or it may land with a quiet thud. Or it may live on to taunt us with an “I told you so” that falls on defeated ears.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Abby: My husband prefers leftovers to sandwiches for his work lunch. He generally takes them in reusable plastic bowls that claim to be dishwasher and microwave safe.

After a short time, these bowls become terribly stained.

Not only are they unsightly, but sometimes they harbor odors.

Even though they have been thoroughly washed, they seem unclean.

I have tried soaking the bowls overnight in dishwashing detergent and even using a small amount of bleach, but the stains remain. Palliative care can help patients with incurable disease Dear Doctor K: My mother has advanced cancer and has only a few months to live. How can we help her live out her remaining days with as little pain and as much peace as possible?

Dear Reader: In your mother’s situation, palliative care can help maintain quality of life and lead to a “good death.”

Palliative care focuses on both emotional and physical needs. It makes relief of pain and suffering a top priority. It also provides active support to loved ones and caregivers, including information about how to take care of someone at home.

A recent study conducted by Harvard-affiliated researchers surveyed almost 400 men and women with advanced cancer a few months before they died.

Their caregivers were also asked about the person’s end-of-life experience.

The study found that human connection, rather than heroic life-saving efforts, mattered most to patients and their families.

Most, but not all, of my patients want to be entirely in con-

trol of decisions made about their medical care. They want to know what their options are – and the benefits and risks of each option.

They understand that the best we doctors can do is give them estimates. If their condition is incurable, they want an estimate of how much longer they might live with a particular treatment.

And they want to know what symptoms they might suffer both without treatment and from the treatment.

After they get this information, they want to make the decision about what to do. They often discuss this with the family and friends they trust before making their decision.

You could become a hero Dr. Wallace: Last night my older brother became a hero. Our family was celebrating my grandfather’s birthday at a restaurant when a neighboring diner got something stuck in his throat and he couldn’t breathe.

He stood up and tried to gasp for air, but he was unsuccessful.

No one at his table knew what to do, but someone yelled, “Please help! This man can’t breathe!”

My older brother hurried over and used the Heimlich maneuver. After two jerks, a piece of meat flew out of the man’s mouth.

The poor man was weak and very scared, but he was alive with no real damage to him.

His wife was so happy with emotion that she hugged my brother for quite some time.

The owner of the restaurant was also thrilled that the choking victim was saved from a certain death.

Our tab for our family celebration was over $150, and the owner refused to accept payment. That was a very nice gesture.

My brother learned the Heimlich maneuver when he was a paramedic.

Is it possible you could print how to successfully use this method on someone who is choking? Last night my brother taught all of our family members how to do it. We all took turns practicing on one another.

Even my grandparents participated.

The American Red Cross says that before the Heimlich maneuver is applied, you should have the person stand and hang his head.

Then give him four sharp slaps between the shoulder blades.

If this should not clear the breathing lane, use the Heimlich maneuver as follows: Stand behind the choking victim and wrap your arms around his waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it thumb side against his abdomen between the rib cage and the navel. Grasp the fist with your other hand and press with a quick upward thrust.

If this still doesn’t get the job done, do it again and press a little harder.

This really works!

Since I have learned this easy maneuver, I’ve had to use it twice, on a friend at dinner and on a stranger in a restaurant.

Teens, please practice this maneuver on your parents now so you can use it in an emergency. Don’t be overly aggressive as you could break a rib or two.

Practice makes perfect and in this case can save a precious life.

Everyone should learn how to successfully use the Heimlich maneuver. It doesn’t take long to learn, and it could make you a hero!

At the bridge table, if you get pushy in the bidding, you had better take the play seriously to complete the job successfully.

In today’s deal, West leads the heart king against six spades. How should South play?

In this modern auction, North’s fit-showing redouble indicated exactly three-card spade support. South’s threeheart cue-bid was a game-force.

Four hearts was a control-bid (cue-bid), showing first-round control in that suit and expressing slam interest. Four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood, the reply indicating three key cards (here, two aces and the spade king).

South would like to draw trumps and establish dummy’s club suit by cashing the ace and king and ruffing down the queen. However, even if that worked, there would be no immediate dummy entry to get to the last three clubs. Instead, South must hope West has the club queen.

South wins with his heart ace and cashes the spade ace.

But then he must not proceed too quickly. When West drops the 10, declarer must carefully unblock dummy’s nine. Next, South plays a spade to dummy’s queen, finesses his eight on the way back, and draws East’s last trump. Finally, declarer runs the club 10 and makes his contract. He takes five spades, one heart and six clubs.
