building needs work

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In an effort to update technology at the Morris Municipal Services Facility, the Building and Grounds Committee has approved two quotes for work to be done in the near future.

The committee OK’d price quotes Tuesday with Aldermen Randy Larson’s and Don Matteson’s approval.

Alderman Doug Hayse was absent.

City Clerk Carol Adair, Assistant City Attorney Brad Nolden and Mayor Richard Kopczick also were present.

A quote of $4,760 was received from MidCo, a telephone and security system company, for a new computer and software update for the building’s security system, Kopczick said Wednesday.

Kopczick said the computer currently running the security system has gotten to the point where it no longer accepts software updates.

“We’ve been experiencing some issues with our key fobs and doors locking out at random,” Kopczick said.

A key fob is an electronic key with built-in authentication abilities that allow veri-

fied users to enter buildings.

Kopczick said a new computer is needed for the security operating system to support the necessary software. He expects the work to be completed soon, which would fix the unreliable system.

The committee also approved a quote of $500 from Black Box to replace the power supply for the building’s phone system. Kopczick said building phones randomly have been shutting down.

The building phones experienced several shutdowns before rebooting and coming back on during a July Emergency Operations Center drill, Kopczick said. On a recent Saturday, a Morris police officer entered the building and reported that all phones were shut down.

“It’s one of those freak things,” Kopczick said. “And you never know what could happen.”

The work will be performed at night to have as little interference with employees as possible, Kopczick said. The city is working to arrange plans with Black Box. The expenditures will appear on a list of bills at the City Council meetings that come after the work is completed.

“You two can be friends,” Misener said.

When the class walked through the doors, they placed their backpacks in the cubby holes, or the preschool equivalent of lockers. Students then sat on a bench waiting for direction from their teacher. It was a small victory when Jankowski noticed five consecutive students waiting.

MORRIS – A range of emotions surfaced Wednesday morning at the rear entrance to White Oak Elementary School as students assembled in the organized chaos known as the first day of school.

From a few third-graders with a slow but upbeat jog into school as they were greeted

by District 54 Principal Chris Maier, to the first student in line for Brooke Olson’s kindergarten class crying, the excitement and sometimes fear of the first day were evident.

Preschool and kindergarten students arrived in buses or their guardian’s car, and then were guided to a single-file line according to which teacher’s name was on wearable name tags.

Maier said of his five years in the district, Wednesday was by far the smoothest first day of them all.

Fire district fundraiser grows in Mazon Second annual event includes dinner, full day of activities

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – The Mazon Fire Protection District is bringing fun to fundraising Saturday as it hosts the second annual spaghetti dinner to raise funds for needed equipment.

The event has grown from just the dinner to a full day of events with something for the whole family.

“We are excited it is getting bigger,” said Kristen Webster, a firefighter and first responder. “We used to have Mazon Fun Days that lasted the whole weekend. This will bring some of that back to the community.”

Robbie Clavey, Mazon district president and event coordinator, said organizers listened to feedback after last year’s event and have made a few changes.

“Last year, I was nervous about how it would turn out, and the community came out in full force,” he said. “This year, we’ve changed the dinner to bigger portions and all you can eat after hearing feedback from the community.”

Organizers also added a band and a beer garden to take

the party into the night.

The money raised will be used to update equipment for the small all-volunteer district.

Last year’s inaugural event raised $6,000, Webster said. The district recently purchased new air packs for the nine active firefighters and now need to replace pants and coats, which have reached their safety lifespan.

Clavey said the fire protection district is different than the newly formed MVK Rescue Squad district, which has been raising funds to hire part-time EMTs to staff during the day when the fire district personnel are at their regular jobs.

The group was able to expand the day to include the new events thanks to sponsors such as D Construction, Brickey Heating and Cooling, Chicagoland Speedway and Matt Seidel with Country Financial in Morris, according to Clavey.

“We are trying to bring back a fun time for the residents, so they don’t have to leave Mazon to have a good time at one of the bigger festivals,” Clavey said.

In addition to the festivities, there will be raffle items, an auction and a 50-50 drawing.

Attend Braidwood Generating Station’s Community Information Night on Aug. 27 and see firsthand how operators safely harness the power of the atom to provide electricity to more than 2 million homes and businesses.

The free event will be at Braidwood’s Services and Training Center from 4 to 7 p.m. The training center is at 36400 S. Essex Road, Wilmington. Station employees will be available to educate visitors on station operations, engineering practices, environmental stewardship, industrial safety, radiological safety, site security, emergency preparedness and more. Visitors also can tour the plant’s main control room simulator, which is used to train reactor operators. Food will be served and participants can register to win an Apple TV. “Community Information Night is a great opportunity to learn more about a working nuclear station and meet the men and women who are dedicated to running it safely and reliably,” Braidwood site Vice President Mark Kanavos said in a news release. “We look forward to hosting this event each year and sharing our commitment to nuclear safety and environmental stewardship with our neighbors.”

MORRIS – Local resident Katie Sheedy of Morris is hosting a fundraiser to run in the 2015 Chicago Marathon to raise money for the American Heart & Stroke Association.

The event starts at 2 p.m. Aug. 30 at the upstairs hall of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Morris.

There is a $7 entrance fee, kids younger than 10 are free. At the event, there will be raffle prizes from local business, food and music. Sheedy, a regular runner, is raising money for the American Heart & Stroke Association in honor of her father, uncle and grandparents who have had heart problems.

How does Grinding and Clenching Affect Teeth?

Many people do not know that they clench or grind their teeth at night. Most of the time, a significant other can tell if their spouse is grinding. If you are unsure if you grind or clench, look at your top front teeth. If they are flat and are the same height, you are a grinder. Upper front teeth are meant to be at different heights, that’s what makes a smile look good. But once they are the same height, you are grinding them. Grinding and clenching leads to fracturing of the teeth which leads to root canals and crowns.

The more often you clench and grind, the more likely a chance you will kill the nerve in the tooth. When a nerve dies, you have a sudden onset of pain triggered by nothing in particular. Grinding and clenching is a subconscious activity and unfortunately, it is difficult to stop. Q: I just turned 60 years old and I decided to get the

Shingles vaccine. I know that Shingles can affect the eyes and I’m wondering how long this vaccine will actually work.

A:

The Shingles vaccine loses most of its preventive effect after approximately 10 years according to a recent report from the Shingles Prevention Study. Investigators Jeffrey J. Blanco, O.D. found that the efficacy against shingles incidents fell from 46% in year 7 to 14% in year 10. By the 11th year, efficacy was negligible.

These numbers suggest that a single dose of herpes zoster vaccine administered at age 60 is unlikely to give protection for the duration of one’s life.An editorial cautiously suggests “rethinking the public health recommendations” and possibly endorsing a second dose of the vaccine about eight years after the first.

Based on these relatively new observations, it certainly seems reasonable that perhaps after eight years revaccination might be in order.We will leave it to the CDC and the infectious disease epidemiologists to establish firm guidelines in the near future.

SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, along with officials from several communities along the Illinois River, like Ottawa and Marseilles, spoke at the Illinois State Resiliency Academy in Springfield on Aug. 11 about the Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance.

Rezin discussed the IVFRA’s successes as well as how it can be used as a model for other regions of the state and other parts of the country, according to a news release from Rezin’s office.

“Our first goal when we started this alliance was to have every community in the region have a certified flood plain manager,” Rezin said. “I am proud to say we now have 24 certified flood plain managers throughout my district. Communities up and down the Illinois and Fox rivers are now on the same page. There is more communication, better standards are in place, and flood ordinances are being enforced. All of this helps us better fight flooding as a region, which saves lives and infrastructure.”

The IVFRA is competing for a $1 billion federal grant. In July, at the IVFRA’s quarterly meeting, Mike Sutfin, Ottawa’s building and zoning official, announced that the IVFRA is

in Phase 2 of the grant competition, which is sponsored by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. While several other areas in Illinois are in competition for the grant, the state has chosen to partner with the IVFRA .

“If we can receive even some of this grant, it will be huge for our region,” Rezin said in the release. “Whether it’s building up our levees, purchasing homes and other structures in designated flood plains, or purchasing new flood fighting materials, continuing to be proactive will only help us in the long run. I am so thankful for all those involved in this Alliance, as other communities are taking note of our successes and following our lead.”

In 2013, Rezin helped establish the Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance. The IVFRA brings communities, local governments, and emergency personnel together to help them prepare for extreme weather events, especially floods, through education, communication and the purchasing of flood prevention materials.

The 38th Senate District has about 130 miles worth of river frontage, one of the most in the state. Illinois has the largest collection of inland bodies of water and rivers in the continental United States.

WWII fighter ace Fritz Payne dies

By JOHN ROGERS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Frederick R. “Fritz” Payne, a World War II fighter ace who left his mark on aviation and wartime history by shooting down six Japanese warplanes during the Battle of Guadalcanal, a bloody, months-long confrontation that helped change the course of the war, has died at age 104.

The retired Marine Corps brigadier general, who was believed to be the oldest surviving U.S. fighter ace, died Aug. 6 at his home in Rancho Mirage.

Hundreds had turned out to honor him last Memorial Day at the Palm Springs Air Museum, which on Tuesday confirmed his death.

By FRAZIER MOORE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Yvonne Craig, who played the sexy, crime-fighting Batgirl in the 1960s TV hit “Batman,” has died. She was 78.

Craig died Monday at her Los Angeles home from complications from breast cancer, her family said.

She began her career as a ballet dancer, the youngest member of The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, with which she toured for three years.

Then she was discovered by Hollywood, appearing in a 1958 episode of “Perry Mason” and in the 1959 feature “The Young Land.”

After that, she won dozens

of roles in TV shows, as well as co-starring in two 1960s Elvis Presley films, “It Happened at the World’s Fair” and “Kissin’ Cousins.”

But she was best known as Batgirl (and her alter ego, librarian Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter) in the 1967-68 season of ABC’s “Batman.” Another memorable TV role, from an episode of the original “Star Trek”: the green Orion Slave Girl who wanted to kill Captain Kirk.

Her many other TV appearances included “Dobie Gillis,” “77 Sunset Strip,” “Dr. Kildare,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “Mod Squad,” “Love, American Style,” “Kojak” and “The Six Million Dollar Man.”

Michele “Mickey” A. Welch, age 58, of Joliet, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015 in Joliet.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015 at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris.

A celebration of Mickey’s Life will follow at 7:00 p.m.

LongtimeOhio Congressman Louis Stokes dies at age 90

By MARK GILLISPIE The Associated Press CLEVELAND – Former U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes, a 15-term congressman from Ohio who took on tough assignments looking into assassinations and scandals, has died at the age of 90, his family said Wednesday.

He died peacefully at home Tuesday with his wife, Jay, at his side, a month after he announced Tony Dejak he had brain and lung cancer.

“During his illness, he confronted it as he did life – with bravery and strength,” his family said in a statement.

Stokes was elected to the House in 1968, becoming Ohio’s first black member of Congress and one of its most respected and influential.

Just a year earlier, his brother, Carl, had been elected mayor of Cleveland – the first black elected mayor of a major U.S. city.

The White House issued a statement from President Barack Obama that noted how Stokes overcame hardships while growing up in Cleveland and praised him for his belief that everyone should have a chance to succeed.

First Christian sponsors mobile food pantry MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – About 150 families took part in We Care of Grundy County’s Mobile Food Pantry on Aug. 12, hosted and sponsored by First Christian Church of Morris. With 8,510 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 57 pounds of food, including 11 pounds of frozen meat and a variety of consumables according to a news release from We Care.

We Care of Grundy County provides a mobile pantry each month that is available for anyone who resides in Grundy County and is in need of food with no restrictions on household income.

The next mobile food pantry will be sponsored by Mazon State Bank, Seco Systems and ITW Filtration. It is

scheduled for Sept. 9 at Mazon Verona Kinsman Middle School, 1013 North St., Mazon.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring a container to carry items. Attendees are asked to provide proof of residency either with a valid driver’s license, state ID or utility bill with their current Grundy County address. For information, call 815-942-6389.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, clothing, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Morris soccer team gets ‘Battle-Tested’ routine

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Throughout the summer, Morris boys soccer coach David Valdivia focused on building unity on his team.

The Redskins lost 15 seniors to graduation from last year’s club, and with a young team rebuilding, Valdivia is looking for any edge he can use.

The summer gave the Redskins several opportunities: a skills camp, a junior skills camp, a Saint Louis University camp, help from the Morris Soccer Association in constructing nets and line fields, and pitching in as a team to help Coal City any way they could after the June tornado.

On Wednesday, they added another team-buiding activity to the mix, as motivational trainer Blake Williams brought his “Battle-Tested” workout to practice.

Before he put them through their paces, Williams told the members of the team he wanted them to take three things away from the day. First, feel good about their effort. Second, feel closer to each other.

Third, be challenged to live a greater life.

The first of the challenges he set for them was to break up into three teams and form the letters M, H and S with their bodies and then perform a pushup, with everyone in the group being able to get their stomach off the ground.

It wasn’t as easy as it sounded, and it took three or four attempts for each group to get everyone up.

This taught the players to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and put themselves in position where their strengths would greatest help the team and their where weaknesses would hinder it the least.

After the letter-shaped pushups, the teams had to form a line as quickly as they could, with each player putting their feet on another player’s shoulders without anyone in the line falling to the ground.

“I have expanded my radius to anywhere within 3 to 3½ hours from home,” said

“They all wanted to do this. I have really been trying to have this team build a closeness. That was something that was missing a little bit from last year’s team, and I don’t want to have that happen again.”

David Valdivia Morris boys soccer coach Williams, who is based in Elk Grove Village. “I send out emails with videos from some of my sessions and will do events like this for teams that want to take part.

“This is my fourth year of doing this part-time. My first year, I was more focused on individual athletes, but I have really come to enjoy working with the teams. It serves a dual purpose. It helps teamwork and it really gets them

to focus.

“I didn’t grow up with the best influences, so I like to teach younger people and try to be a positive influence in as many lives as I can.”

That’s what Vaidivia had in mind for his team.

“Mr. Williams emailed

me,” he said. “I saw the video he sent and thought, ‘I want to do this with our team.’ So, I showed it to some of the kids on the team and they thought it looked awesome.

“They all wanted to do this.

I have really been trying to have this team build a close-

ness. That was something that was missing a little bit from last year’s team, and I don’t want to have that happen again.”

The Redskins begin their season Tuesday in the War on 34 Tournament in Earlville against Herscher.

INDIANAPOLIS – At the risk of being the master of the obvious, the Bears have a real problem at receiver.

It was great to see Alshon Jeffery roaming the practice field on the Bears first day at the Indianapolis Colts’ facility sans crutches and walking boot, but it would be a huge mistake to assume Jeffery’s return to health will cure all ills for the Bears at wideout.

Watching the Bears’ first team offense run against the Colts’ starting defense in seven on seven drills and team, it lined up Eddie Royal wide on one side, Marquess Wilson across the field and Josh Bellamy rushed in when they wanted three receivers on the field.

While the depth chart continues to be a work in progress and we are warned not to read too much into any one player’s reps a, next up after Bellamy appears to be Marc Mariani and then undrafted rookie free agent Cameron Meredith.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler visits with the media once a week and for the second straight week he informed us “I mean I thought they (Colts defense) got after us, they won the day.

Last week it was the Bears defense that took its own offense to task, this week according to Cutler the Colts.

But is it the entire offense?

The Bears’ running game has looked good. The coaches are clearly enamored with Jacquizz Rodgers behind Matt Forte, rookie Jeremy Langford appears to have a chance to be special and both Ka’Deem Carey and Senorice Perry are demanding reps rather than making themselves easy cuts.

Where the offense breaks down is when they go to throw the football.

During Wednesday’s entire practice against the Colts, Cutler did not throw the ball more than 12 to 14 yards down the field to anyone in 7-on-7s or team drills.

The obvious question is, are the Bears just saving work on the intermediate and deep passing game until later in camp, or are they not bothering with something they don’t think they can do without Jeffery and Kevin White on the field? When Cutler was asked if it benefits the club to have backup receivers getting so much work he replied, “Yeah, I mean I would like to work with Alshon and Kevin but it is what it is.

“We’re shifting some guys in there, some guys are getting some work with the 1s and some of the 3s are getting work with the 2s, so it’s a good thing we’re seeing everybody right now.”

Is it really? The main beneficiary of the situation is Wilson who Cutler pointed out is still one of the youngest players on the team four weeks shy of his 23rd birthday.

John Fox was less than celebratory in his observations of Wilson. “I think he’s shown good improvement. He’s getting better, we’re leaning on him some. He’s a guy we saw a little bit on tape a year ago and felt pretty good about. He’s getting plenty of opportunities and I’m excited to see where he goes with it.”

But has Wilson shown anything in his third Bears preseason to suggest he’s ready to be a productive starter in the NFL? Even with Jeffery back it appears the Bears will start him, Wilson on the other side and Royal in the slot.

It is getting harder and harder to imagine the Bears not bringing in another veteran receiver or two before the final roster is set.

Teenage boys need reliable advice about contraception Dear Abby: In my family alone, three young women have – by their own admission – gotten pregnant on purpose to get their boyfriends to marry and support them.

None of these marriages worked out. The horrible relationships were and still are hurtful and damaging, not only to the children, but also to the rest of the family.
