White Oak school hosts first day of kindergarten

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Justin Kowalczyk walked leisurely along the sidewalk up to White Oak Elementary School on Tuesday morning with his parents, Vince and Sherrie Kowalczyk, for his first day of kindergarten.

“I’m excited to go to school,” he said after the crossing guard escorted him across the street from the school parking lot.

His parents said he was looking forward to going, and he had already met his teacher, which he likes.

Lani Hanley, another kindergarten student at White Oak was as nervous as she was excited for her first day of school.

District 54 superintendent Teri Shaw said the the morning drop off exceeded expectations as the new traffic pattern was put to the test on the first day of school.

“The new traffic pattern went really well,” Shaw said.

“We had a couple of parent calls, and a few who didn’t receive a call from the bus company, so the parents brought them, but otherwise it went really well.”

Shaw was on hand outside the school opening the car doors to welcome students to school.

Molly Passerman, a first grade student at White Oak thanked Shaw for holding the door open and said she was happy, because she likes school.

In the back of White Oak bus students were dropped off and the incoming kindergarten students were greeted by their teachers, so they could line up by class before releasing balloons to celebrate their first day back at school.

Recess had to be held inside for district 54 and Saratoga because of mid day rain showers in Morris.

“Indoor recess on the first day is never fun,” Shaw said.

Ashlyn Punke, a second grade student at Saratoga said her first day at school was awesome, even though they had to stay inside for their second recess.

“We had to stay in for our second recess and read books instead,” Punke said. “But that’s OK because I like to learn.”

Saratoga principal Joe Zweeres said Tuesday was a successful first day.

Things went well, and we’re underway,” Zweeres said.

“We’re looking forward to day two.”

Zweeres said a few minor adjustments had to be made but nothing out of the ordinary for the first day of the school year.

Students at Nettle Creek had an early dismissal on their first day back because of teacher’s institute on Tuesday afternoon, where teacher’s were given annual mandatory health training’s by the school nurse.

Families get back-to-school help from Operation St. Nick

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For some families, the end of summer and the start of the school year brings added stress as they try to afford new clothes, shoes and school supplies.

Fortunately, there’s help out there. Operation St. Nick has completed its Back-ToSchool program for 2014, assisting 381 children from 208 families throughout Grundy County as they return to school.

The economy may be improving, but many families still struggle to put food on the table and pay their monthly bills despite working, said Joe Schmitz, president of Operation St. Nick.

“Many parents are out of work because of health issues, being laid off or they just make minimum wage, which makes it difficult to make ends meet,” Schmitz said.

The program supplies each child with $50 in school supplies and $100 in clothing.

Operation St. Nick was one of the founding agencies of the Grundy County Back To School Fair, and they have assisted 4,258 children during the past 10 years. The amount the organization provides annually depends on donations, but so far it has spent $541,881 in 10 years.

In 1992, when the program began, 100 children were assisted providing $75 a student, $50 for clothing and $25 on school supplies.

Schmitz said the amount spent per child increased the first few years, but has held steady at $150 for the past seven years.

“We never know for sure how many families will complete and submit the application and qualify for assistance,” Kathy Dale, coordinator of the Operation St. Nick Back-To-School program said in a news release. “The application process is quite lengthy, but the information gives us the insight to see

Dale said it’s important to minimize the financial burden for struggling families, so their children can look forward to returning to school

with the proper supplies and new clothing they picked out themselves.

The Back-To-School program is funded by the annual Christmas in July party on July 26 at Clayton’s Tap in Morris. The event raised

$40,000.

Lois Darlington of Clayton’s Tap said her committee, led by Jan Close and Karen Looper, worked from right after Christmas until July to pull the event together.

“When you realize that this

great community of Grundy County has donated more than a half million dollars over the past 10 years to help assist families in need have the school supplies and clothing their children need to go back to school and feel good about themselves, like the rest of their classmates, it shows why Grundy County is such a wonderful place to live and raise your family,” Schmitz said. “I know of no other place like it.”

Operation St. Nick is nonprofit charity that helps families in need with six programs during the year.

Besides the Back-To-School program, it has a spring new bike program; runs a literacy program to help children improve their reading skills; helps food pantries throughout Grundy County keep their pantries full; assists 12 military families a year during the holiday season with a dream wish; and gives children gifts off their own Christmas wish list, as well as food for their family, through their Christmas program.

Grundy Animal Control to pay for ventilation repairs

“The dogs push them out and we’ve had them get their heads caught,” Krull said.

“They’re older cages. We’ve had them for years and this just needed to be done,” she added.

The money will come from the department’s pet population fund, which has about $88,000 available, according to an estimate by County Administrator Heidi Miller.

“That fund has been building up for a number of years,” Animal Control Director June Krull said. “We accumulated all of that money and now I’m so glad that we have it so we can use it for things like this.”

The Grundy County Education Committee agreed Monday to allow Krull to proceed with the three purchases.

The most expensive purchase will be for repairs to the building’s ventilation system, which is projected to cost about $37,500.

Post-construction problems have plagued the facility, built about two years ago. For months, a strong odor of feces and urine, as well as incredibly high humidity levels, have

“When they came in and said they needed to put Vix under their noses to get through the building, we knew it was not conditions people should work in,” Education Committee member Ann Gill said during Monday’s meeting.

Also needed is a new truck to pick up animals throughout the county. The department’s current truck has racked up more than 185,000 miles and has a broken fuel pump.

“We patrol all of the towns so there is a lot of area covered every day,” Krull said.

The truck is estimated to cost about $21,000, but Krull said she budgeted about $12,500 for a new vehicle this year in anticipation.

The education committee also agreed to sell the old truck in the county’s surplus sale.

Accident occurred Tuesday near Morris High

MORRIS – A five-vehicle accident outside of Morris Community High School caused no major injuries Tuesday.

The accident occurred just as school was letting out and involved many high school aged kids.

“Several of the people involved are underage,” said Bob Wills, deputy chief for the Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District while on the scene.

“It was at a bad time, because they were all coming out of the high school,” he continued.

CHANNAHON – An open house has been scheduled for Saturday for a day care center in Channahon.

The LLCS Kids Connection, 24913 S. Sage St., Channahon, will hold an open house from

MORRIS – Public officials from across Illinois Valley are studying commuter rail service between Peru and Joliet, and they want resident feedback.

The Illinois Valley Public Transportation Study steering committee will host Thursday a public meeting at the Morris Municipal Services Building aimed at gathering public input and explaining the study.

The meeting will be an open house format, so residents can attend anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Once there, attendees can view an audio-visual presentation, review exhibits, provide comments and meet individually with study team representatives.

“In trying to be as transparent as possible, they’re giving people the opportunity to participate in the process,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Kopczick is a part of the Illinois Valley Commuter Rail Steering Committee. Other representatives are from Channahon, Marseilles, Minooka, Joliet, Seneca, North Utica, Ottawa and Peru.

The committee was formed in 2002 with assistance from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Phase one of the four-phase feasibility study showed there were no fatal flaws preventing the project, Kopczick said.

“Since that first phase study, the county’s bus system under Sherey Zerbian has picked up dramatically,” Kopczick said.

Thursday’s meeting will be centered on phase two of the study, which will examine mobility throughout Grundy, LaSalle and Kendall counties.

Phase three will provide a detailed five-year plan for stakeholders regarding the project, and the fourth and final phase will provide a 20-year plan.

Channahon hires police officer from New Lenox

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Trustees have approved the appointment of a new Channahon police officer.

Justin Bennett serves as a community service officer with the New Lenox Police Department, and trustees approved his hiring during a brief meeting Monday evening.

“I think he will be a very good fit for our department,”

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

“I know he’ll do a wonderful job here,” Village President Joe Cook added. “It’s a big family here, and these guys do a good job at making it feel like a family.”

At the meeting, Cook also asked area drivers to take care around bus stops, now that school has begun. Children may not be watching carefully for cars.

“Keep it slow and take it easy,” he said, “and be cau-

tious and aware.”

Safety training, concrete testing approved

Also Monday, trustees approved a one-year agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 that will allow Public Works staff to continue training at the Wilmington facility.

For $5,760, a rate of $480 an employee, staff may train for occupational safety and health administration requirements

and on how to use equipment such as backhoes.

Trustees also approved a $13,695 material testing proposal from Midwest Testing Services. The company will provide quality assurance testing on concrete, base course and asphalt done as part of Channahon’s road maintenance program. The work will take place at the business’s plant and on site.

for a retail center and two restaurant buildings on 13.17 acres on the empty land at the southeast corner of Route 6 and Bluff Road. MKM Oil proposes the project and submitted a concept plan, though staff said a concept plan was not necessary since there is no need to subdivide the property.

Woman transported to hospital after Stratton Park accident

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A woman was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by LifeStar helicopter Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle struck a tree on the west entrance road to Stratton Park.

“A call came in that we had an accident with extrication

with one patient pinned in the car,” Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said.

Steffes said Tuesday afternoon there was no information available on the victim’s condition.

Morris Deputy Police Chief John Severson said the accident is under investigation and that police would release

more information when it was available.

Stratton Park was closed about 2 p.m. Tuesday after the accident, to allow a LifeStar helicopter to land in the park to assist at the scene.

District 54 hires tech consultant

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – District 54 has hired Unified Concepts for technology support instead of hiring a new IT director.

The District 54 school board voted, 6-0, with Dave Obrochta absent, to hire Unified Concepts instead of filling the open IT position.

The one-year contract will provide an outsource team with monitoring and a technician on-site two days a week for eight hours, at an annual cost of $66,880.

“We would like to add an additional three days a week for the technician at the beginning of the school year, for up to six weeks, to get us through the roll out,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

During the August Committee of the Whole meeting, District 54 heard a presentation by Ted Lemmy with Unified Concepts, hired to do a technology audit for the district.

Unified Concepts offers Information Technology services to different school districts and Shaw said its references were impeccable.

The company would provide someone on-site at the schools two days a week, in ad-

dition to providing web-based help, a help desk and education for teachers who want to learn more about technology, including adding video to their teaching.

“In the end, we come in, go through what is going on and are able to cut from your IT cost more than what our fee is,” Lemmy said at the committee meeting. “The cost is about the same as one person, but you get a whole team.”

Shaw said the previous IT director made $45,000 a year, plus benefits. The $66,880 contract would include all but the three extra days a week at the start of the year, which would come at an additional cost.

The board discussed Unified Concepts’ belief that about 80 percent of the district’s help desk issues could be handled remotely by the help desk team.

“It will be nice if they can do 80 percent of it and we don’t need anyone five days a week,” board member Carol Narvick said.

The district will choose which two days a week the technician is present at the schools, but once those days are chosen, they can’t change week-to-week. Added support days can be added as needed basis for an additional cost.

D-54 board approves retirements, resignations in personnel shakeup

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Grade School District 54 board members have approved the retirement of art teacher Joan Workman, as well as six staff resignations and the employment of two teachers and eight support personnel.

The staff resigned for various reasons, including continuing education, the need for a full-time position and for jobs closer to home.

The board accepted the personnel changes by a vote of 4-2, with Dave Obrochta absent and Bonnie Cap and Jerry White voting no.

During discussion, Cap said she had an issue with the art teacher position.

“I have a problem with the art position and the posting of the position,” Cap said. “I was called by a member of the community, and I checked for the posting every day and it was not there.”

Cap said she emailed Board President Scot Hastings with her concerns, but did not get a satisfactory response from him.

said Hastings asked her for proof of the date the job was posted online. She responded with a computer screenshot of the web page the district posts the information on, which shows a posting date of July 29, 2014.

That’s two days before the formal letter from Joan Workman announcing her intent to retire before the school year.

Cap said the screenshot did not meet her expectations, since anyone could fill out that portion and take a screenshot. It did not guarantee an actual online posting.

“I believe it is a legal issue, and I don’t think any board member should vote on this tonight,” Cap said.

Caroline Cummings told Cap she believed the school board meeting was not the place to get a problem solved and suggested that if Hastings didn’t answer Cap to her satisfaction, she should have called Shaw personally.

Shaw said in a phone interview Tuesday that she gave Hastings what she was asked for and if she knew it wasn’t to Cap’s satisfaction, she could have been prepared

to show the entire board the whole process.

“We received 18 outside applications,” Shaw said.

“You don’t get 18 applications without posting the job.”

Shaw said the school district often posts a job opening as soon as officials know it’s going to happen, especially in the late summer months, so they have time to interview and have someone in place when the school year starts.

“It was a heavy accusation and unfounded,” Shaw said.

“It was uncalled for, inappropriate and unnecessary.”

Shaw said she spoke with the board’s attorney Tuesday morning; the attorney’s office did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

White made an appointment to meet with district Principal Chris Maier on Tuesday and saw the online application process as well as the posting history and a list of applicants.

“I didn’t doubt that Mr. Maier posted it,” White said.

“I voted no because I was unhappy with other board members’ reactions. I should have abstained.”

Corey Shaw, age 52, of Morris, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, at The University of Chicago Medical Center, from complications of Amyloidosis, a rare ailment he fought for nearly two years.

Born December 13, 1961, in Idaho Falls, Idaho where he was raised and educated. Corey joined the Air Force after High School, and while en route to an assignment, he met Donna Mestemaker, an Ohio native who, while beginning a vacation, boarded the plane Corey was on.

She eventually would become his wife.

In addition to his beloved wife of 32 years, Donna, he is survived by his daughters, Cari (Rick) Archer of Tampa, FL, and Tara Shaw of Morris, IL; is mother, Priscilla (nee Ball) Shaw of Idaho Falls; father, Dennis (LeeAnn) Shaw of Idaho Falls; grandmother, Helen Shaw Arbuckle of Idaho; two sisters, Denise (Shawn) Martin of the Boise, ID area and Diana (Dennis) Tracy of Idaho Falls; one brother, Kelly (Kellie Jo) Shaw of Idaho Falls.

Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Corey will also be missed by the Mestemaker family, who thought the world of him, rallying with him through his difficult journey.

Corey, a self-employed race car designer and builder, enjoyed living in several locations in the United States, throughout his adult years.

He was formerly a resident of Virginia, Illinois and California (while serving our Country), Michigan and Idaho. He was a military buff who enjoyed several hobbies, including fishing (for fish and cats), camping, hunting, flying,cooking, sports cars and playing the trumpet.

He loved his family immensely and will forever be proud of his daughters.

All friends and relatives are invited to gather for a visitation in the Narthex of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 516 E. Jackson Street, Morris, on Friday, August 22, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held also at Immaculate Conception Church Saturday, August 23, 2104, at 10:30 a.m., with Fr. Ed Howe, C.R. officiating. As it was Corey’s wish, cremation rites have been accorded, and his final earthly remains will be going home to Idaho Falls at a later date.

Farm harvest means it’s tomato time

It’s the bruschetta phase of summer for Ariel Pressman, which makes him a happy farmer.

He stands in his field with row upon row of tomato plants, like a backyard gardener who got carried away.

Fifteen rows of tomato plants, in fact, each 300 feet long. By the end of the season, he expects to harvest 1,000 pounds a bed, if the weather cooperates.

That’s two-thirds of an acre of summer’s favorite vegetable, only part of his 40-some crops on the Clear Lake, Wisconsin, leased property he calls Seed to Seed Farm.

Pressman, 28, is in his third year of farming on his own.

His story – city kid becomes farmer – has, surprisingly, become familiar in the past decade. His version: Grew up in Philadelphia, went to college in Massachusetts where he studied social cognition, and then landed an office job that didn’t make him happy.

Maybe it was his mother’s big garden that nudged him into farming. He doesn’t know for sure, but two internships tilling the soil (in Vermont and Osceola, Wisconsin) convinced him he wanted to work the land.

Some of the organic vegetables he grows – a little bit of almost everything, from peppers to beets and radishes, celery and herbs to kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and fava beans – are divvied up among members of his CSA (community-supported agriculture) who get weekly allotments. (“I like doing some random interesting stuff for the CSA,” he said.) Cabbages go to the Minneapolis public schools’ lunch program. Other produce lands in the kitchen of Twin Cities restaurants and, of course, customers at the farmers market.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

To the Editor: It’s that time of year; students of all ages are headed back to school.

Today, eight out of 10 Illinois jobs require some education or training beyond high school.

As employment opportunities evolve, the opportunities made available to students for a quality education and career training must progress, as well.

It is important, now more than ever, that we assure students graduate high school giving them the opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education or other training.

By fostering a quality educational system, we give our

students the skills necessary to be competitive in the workforce today, in turn attracting new businesses to our area.

Specifically, studies show participation in an early childhood education program increases the chance students will succeed academically throughout life. Investing in early childhood education provides students with a solid base upon which to build their success. By continuing to support education funding at all levels, as well as new technical training facilities, we can assure our students have access to the education they need to succeed in today’s employment market.

Perry’s indictment damages governor and the state For a long time, Texas Gov. Rick Perry walked too fine a line between politics and policy. It caught up with him late last week.

For months, a grand jury has investigated charges that Perry abused his power by going too far in trying to get a Democratic county district attorney removed from office.

The DA, Rosemary Lehmberg, pleaded guilty to drunken driving last year, served 45 days in jail and went into treatment.

But she refused to resign.

That wasn’t good enough for the governor.

He wanted her out, and when she wouldn’t leave, Perry just couldn’t let it go.

Instead, he used his veto power to withhold millions of dollars from the state’s public integrity unit, which Lehmberg oversees

and which investigates misdeeds of state agencies and officials. The county had to stitch together funds to keep the crucial agency operating on a shoestring.

Of course, an indictment is a long way from a conviction. A judge and jury will have the final say on that.

In recent years, Perry has been focused less on governing Texas than on making sure his base understands just how conservative he is. If he had done more governing and less politicking, ousting Lehmberg would not have been a priority and he wouldn’t be where he is today.

Now he’s the guy under indictment for abuse of power. That’s even worse.

Choice in education up to the parent I was chatting the other day with a fellow who, along with his wife, homeschool their children.

He expounded on the benefits his youngsters have derived from being taught at home: a customized curriculum, religious values instilled and extra time with parents.

And then he added, “One of the great things about homeschooling is that I haven’t been hassled by anyone in government over how we choose to educate our kids.”

Of course, homeschooling isn’t for everyone. But it is a wonderful option.

There are other good choices out there, too: parochial schools, private secular schools, public schools, charter schools, online learning and other options.

That’s why I support school choice. Folks ask me, why?

After all, I went to public schools. Don’t I support public education?

My answer is straightforward: I support education. I don’t really care if that education is provided by a public school, a private school or in the home. What matters is whether our next generation is being prepared.

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder Unfortunately, there are some in public education who want to maintain monopolies on educating children from poor and working class families.

After all, those from middle class and wealthy families can afford to make choices for themselves. Not so for others.

And the current system often is denying children in low income areas access to quality learning experiences.

I live in a rural school district with a high level of poverty. One of my neighbors shared that his daughters couldn’t get admitted directly into engineering school because their high school didn’t offer the advanced math classes they needed.

Our children deserve better.

Education is about opportunity.

Yet many in the public education establishment oppose offering alternatives to students who want to excel but whose schools can’t accommodate their needs.

So youngsters from poor areas are left with few choices

but second-tier educations.

That is morally reprehensible. It’s not just a rural story. A college friend of mine graduated near the top of his class at one of Chicago’s most impoverished high schools.

He was bright, talented and motivated. He wanted to be an engineer. But he found himself in college remedial math. His high school hadn’t adequately prepared him. Eventually he flunked out.

Folks, that’s just plain wrong. We are a nation based on opportunity. We value choice, yet we give neither to children born into poor or working-class families.

That’s why school vouchers have merit – they empower parents to make wise choices for their children. Every parent wants to see their child succeed and offering education choices is the way to see that happen.

After all, our children deserve the best.

It’s a responsibility that the Morris seniors take seriously.

“It’s different and it’s exciting at the same time,” defensive specialist Misek said. “The low numbers will definitely make things challenging, but on the other hand, it will help prepare some of the players on the lower levels ready for the future.

We know we are helping the program move forward.”

“We definitely have to make a lot of adjustments,” said Thomas, the team’s only middle for now. “But we are getting used to it. We know we have to use our senior status and experience to help things go as well as they can.”

Torkelson, one of the Redskins’ two setters, is another player that hopes to help push the program ahead.

“We hope things work well as far as getting the team to take the next step,” she said.

“It’s nice to know that we can be a part of doing that.”

Besides the seniors, Litwill-

er is also counting on Korte, who has not only the talent to have already committed to the University of Ilinois, but also the court time to take a leadership role as a junior.

“She has definitely had more time on a volleyball court than anyone,” Litwiller said.

“And, she is able to take some of the taller sophomores in practice and teach them things.

That’s something she seems to like doing, and the girls listen to her. She’s a leader, and we are going to need that from her.

“We are going to need leadership from all six of the original varsity players, and they have been very good about it so far. We know this isn’t the best situation, but we have to make the best of the situation we have. If some girls have to move around and play positions other than they normally would, they will be better-rounded players. That can work to our advantage. For now, we just keep working hard and see what happens.”

MORRIS – It’s been a week since Morris girls volleyball coach Jackie Litwiller started her team’s first practice with only six players on the varsity level.

And, it’s just more than a week before the Redskins have their first match, Aug. 28 at Coal City.

When practice started, the varsity roster consisted of seniors Taya Torkelson, Amber Misek and Emma Thomas, as well as junors Kaylin Korte, Maren Bashor and Addison Polite. Since then, Litwiller has bumped up Janelle Brehm from the sophomore team to full-time varsity, and there will be more on the way. Which ones is anybody’s guess.

“Right now, it’s hard to tell,” Litwiller said. “We are practicing with the varsity and sophomores together, and we are gearing the practices to a more varsity-oriented pace.

The sophomores are getting used to moving around and playing a faster game, so hopefully that will help them, not only in the sophomore matches they will play, but so they will be ready if they are called up to help the varsity.

“It’s going to be a work in progress for a while. We are going to have to see what combinations work. One thing we definitely need to come up with is another person who can play in the middle.”

What began as a patchwork project is something that Litwiller hopes can transform into a cohesive unit. It will definitely take a team effort, and she will be leaning on the team itself to carry on that duty.

“I need to the six original varsity players to help me out,” Litwiller said. “And they really have been. Whether it’s little things like locker room stuff or organizational things. Usually, I would have a lot more seniors that would be able to help with that, but with only three, the juniors have had to step in and help, too. With adjusting to being in school and all that goes with that, things have gone pretty smoothly so far, so I am

Minooka’s Smith to anchor USF’s offensive line

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Kenny Smith and Samie Sabbah were both recognized for their play along the offensive line for the University of St. Francis last season.

And the two senior captains, who were all-conference selections from last year’s 7-4 squad, figure to play a key role in whether the Saints can improve upon last year’s mark.

Smith, a Minooka graduate, and Sabbah, a Bolingbrook alumnus, will lead the way for an offensive line that will take on a different role this year for coach Joe Curry.

With the offense expected to be more run-oriented after the departure of record-setting quarterback E.J. White, much of USF’s success on that side of the ball will be because of the efforts of its veteran offensive line.

Smith, a first-team allleague pick in 2013, started all 11 games at right tackle. He also played at Saint Xavier, where he was a starting guard with the 2011 national champions. A second-team all-conference pick a year ago, Sabbah started all 11 games at right guard in 2013 and was a starter at right tackle the previous two years for the Saints.

Smith hopes his second season at USF will be just as successful as his debut, with the exception of seeing his squad enjoying success in the postseason.

“This year I feel like we all have the same attitude and the same common goal of just going 1-0 each week,” Smith said.

“Everything that we’ve been doing in camp so far is all together – it’s for the team, not the individual, and that’s what I like most about this team.

“Coach said it last year. The success of our team depends on the offensive line, so as far as we go is as far as the team goes. We have a lot of potential since we all got playing time last year. We’re looking for something great this year.

We expect it and will go get it. I know what it feels like to win a national title, and it’s all about coming together as one.”

Sabbah, who redshirted at USF in 2008 before spending time at Joliet Junior College, has enjoyed being a part of the Saints’ recent success and hopes for bigger things this season.

“I feel like we’re a really close-knit group. And we don’t really get leadership from one or two guys – it’s pretty much all of the upperclassmen who are taking a part in it,” Sab-

bah said. “It’s a big honor for the two of us to be named as captains since we didn’t really have an offensive line captain the last two years. And what’s special is we’re all having a lot of fun.

“I’ve been here four years and earlier before taking two years off. I’ve been lucky enough to be here for three winning seasons, and the program has definitely turned around. I don’t really play for me; I play for Kenny and the rest of the O-line and to keep the quarterbacks and running

Junior Zack Webster, from Tinley Park, has started the past two seasons at left guard while junior tackle Ross Stremme, a Lincoln-Way North graduate, will be a twoyear starter. The Saints’ coach has also been impressed in camp with some of his true freshman, such as Brennan Mulroe from Lincoln-Way West, and Darrion Sole from Homewood-Flossmoor.

Curry feels that the group is up to the challenge and that its play will go a long way in determining whether USF is deserving of its 20th place NAIA preseason ranking.

“Our offense starts with the run, and that begins with the offensive line,” Curry said.

“And I could not be happier with the fact that we have Kenny and Samie coming back. We have four returning two- or three-year starters. It’s a veteran group and one that has a little nasty in them and understands that we have to run the football in order to be successful.

“I’m extremely happy with the physicality that they’ve brought every day. Once we establish the run, then it’s our pass protection, and that’s been really good the past few days. We have never been this deep on the offensive line with guys who are capable of going in there and doing it. But for us, it all starts with Kenny and Samie, who make things go.”

Bears’ QB Jay Cutler looks, acts like changed man Nothing makes me crazier than an analyst who believes he’s made a discovery but refuses to put his name on it for fear of being proven wrong.

Hey, nobody’s perfect, especially me, so I’m done tiptoeing around.

Through an entire offseason of OTAs, veteran minicamp and three full weeks in Bourbonnais, it appears to me Jay Cutler is a changed man.

In spite of his own warning to me today – I’ll get to it in a moment – that my pronouncement may be premature, I’m convinced we’re dealing with a new and better model of Cutler.

While it is one of the telltale signs, I’m not talking just about his relationship with the media.

“We’ve absolutely noticed,” offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said. “I think everyone in the building has noticed a difference in Jay. “None of us knew Jay very well before getting here last

year and we worked through the year and that first year is always hard on everybody. But we see, and what I see in Jay Cutler right now is a guy that’s leading the group. A guy that is approachable and is working to make everybody better because he realizes that it’s important that everybody is on the same page with him.

“He’s talked with receivers, he’s talked with linemen, he’s working with the running backs constantly and that’s a maturity on his part of knowing the offense, knowing what we want as coaches, and feeling good about being the leader that he is. It’s been a very good start of the year that way.”

If the old Cutler, whose most memorable moments as a Bear have included shoving teammates on the field and cussing out his coaches on national TV, isn’t gone forever, he is certainly deep in hiding.

“You know, Santonio [Holmes] was here, had signed his contract, and 60 minutes later he was on the field with Jay and throwing routes,” Kromer said. “That was totally him [Jay] doing it and just getting the timing, getting the feel for how fast he is, the speed, how he’s going to look getting in and out of cuts, so they started right away and they’ve continued since.”

I believe the notion Cutler is injury prone has always been overrated. In the seven seasons since he became a starter in Denver, Cutler has started 16

Bears offensive coordinator games three times, 15 games twice, and missed just 13 of a possible 112 starts.

My fear for Cutler has always been that his attitude and the way he’s carried himself, which prior to this year was petulant, angry, dismissive and disgusted with everyone around him a good chunk of time, would be his undoing at a position where, if he couldn’t lead, he would never succeed.

The most important single ingredient for the Bears to succeed this year is a new and better Cutler. Whether it’s married life, the birth of his second son or he’s just a late bloomer, I

think they may just have one.

So I asked the man himself today.

“Jay, are you more at ease this year with yourself, your teammates and the media, and if so why?”

“It might be true,” Cutler responded. “Anytime you are in an offense and have the same group of guys around you, it’s going to be more comfortable.

It is for me, anyway. I like the group of guys we have in the locker room, understand what we’re doing offensively. And it’s early. It’s still preseason with you guys.”

A year ago, I would have taken that last line as a legitimate warning. But, based on the big smile and chuckle he offered along with it, I’m pretty sure the new Jay was actually just having fun.

MORRIS – The Morris Chiefs varsity football team was the only one in the program to record a win in Saturday’s season-opening games, defeating the Wilmington Bobcast, 26-19.

Chad McElrath led Morris with 74 rushing yards, while Daqwon Hopper ran for 62.

McElrath added a 60-yard punt return and scored on runs of eight and seven yards. Hopper had a 27-yard run for a score, while Austin Hatcher returned a punt 37 yards for a touchdown. Hatcher also added a pair of extra-point kicks. Nathan Sendra ran for 11 yards for the Chiefs, while the defense was led by Dakota Revels with five tackles and Hatcher with a tackle and two sacks. Waving a red flag in the Ivy League

ST. LOUIS – In his introduction to “Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life,” former Yale professor William Deresiewicz describes today’s Ivy League as a highly competent zombie factory, one that “manufactures students who are smart and talented and driven, yes, but also anxious, timid and lost, with little intellectual curiosity and stunted sense of purpose: trapped in a bubble of privilege, heading meekly in the same direction, great at what they’re doing but with no idea why they’re doing it.” He then explains how the alleged best higher-education system in the world got this way — and what can be done to foster a top-tier college environment at once more diverse and less miserable.

From the racket of the U.S. News rankings to the overextended misdeeds of poseur-scholar James Franco, from the history of the “legacy” system (originally put in place to keep out Jewish students), to the overuse of adjuncts, there is little in the contemporary higher-ed landscape — in which he spent two and a half decades as both student and professor — that Deresiewicz leaves unquestioned.

In a recent email conversation, we discussed at least a fraction of what “Excellent Sheep” covers. Excerpts:

Q: Your tour for this book is almost exclusively to the very institutions you lambaste for their corporatized fostering of elitist mediocrity. Any awkward moments?

A: I’m speaking at those schools because that is the audience that most needs to hear my message. To the credit of the individuals or groups who have invited me, at least some people on elite campuses recognize as much. I’ve actually been

In fact, those conversations were instrumental in helping me develop the book – in giving me a sense not only of what’s going on with high-achieving students now, but of what they need and want to hear. So I’m not worried about awkward moments. I welcome whatever questions or responses students (and professors, and administrators) may have. Besides, I’ve found that today’s students are unfailingly polite — almost to a fault, I would say.

Q: In your early chapters, you present a heartbreaking paradox of students who are overworked and miserable. Will you tell me a little bit more about what you refer to as “the opportunities [elite education] closes down”?

A: I mean the opportunity

not to be rich — or high-status — and still live a good life. In other words, if you’re a smart, talented, energetic young person in America today (especially if you grow up upper-middle-class or

higher), if you’re the kind of kid who goes to these schools, you have the opportunity to live a life of meaning and purpose and still make a perfectly decent living. This is a very rare opportunity in human history, and the only thing that can screw it up for you is if you allow yourself to buy into the kind of standards that the system works so hard to instill, that desperate need for the constant affirmation of credentials and gold stars, whether in the form of A’s or of ultra-high salaries and prestigious titles.

Q: I’m sure you’re aware of the unintended consequences of talk of “doing what you love” and “vocation,” which is the monetary devaluation of artistic or creative work. Is there a Golden Mean between the soul-sucking $150K consulting job and the rhetoric of “vocation”?

A: Yes, I’m quite aware

of the way the rhetoric of love and vocation has been co-opted by people who don’t want to pay their workers (intellectual, creative, or otherwise) what they deserve. But that doesn’t mean

that love and vocation aren’t real things. People should strive to do work that’s meaningful to them, and they should also insist (to the extent they can, which is a lot greater if people act collectively) that they get paid a fair wage for that work. “Love” should matter to you; as far as your boss is concerned, it’s none of their business.

I should also add something very important: I am not telling students to go into any particular kind of work – the arts, academia, service work, whatever.

Being a lawyer can certainly be a very meaningful occupation. Purpose and pay are separate issues. The point is not what you do but why you do it, how you choose it.

Q: How do the younger kids you talk to react to your warnings about elite education?

A: I’ve gotten a fair

number of emails from high school students, most of which say, essentially: thank you. Thank you for giving me a perspective that my crazy peers/teachers/ parents don’t have. Though I should say that someone also told me, about the recent article, that the most offended readers are Ivy-bound 18-year-olds. To which I say, it’s never too early to start shaking them up.

Q: Any final thoughts about the initial reactions to the book?

A: One of the arguments

I’ve seen, in published responses to my article, is that I exaggerate the depth of psychological distress among high-achieving students today. Kids are fine, people say; college students have always been unhappy. Well, they’re not fine, and they haven’t always been unhappy – not like this. We’re putting kids under the kind of pressure that no young person should have to face, and a lot of them are cracking, even if we can’t see it. We need to start to see it.

Retrograde ejaculation in men could cause infertility Dear Doctor K: For the past few months, I haven’t been ejaculating, even when I have an orgasm.

Why not? What’s wrong?

Dear Reader: It sounds like retrograde ejaculation. There is one tube, the urethra, which leads from the bladder and through the center of the penis. The urethra carries urine out of the body.

Two tubes, one on each side of the urethra, lead from the seminal vesicles and open into the urethra. The seminal vesicles are tiny glands that make semen.

(The prostate gland helps make semen, too.) Semen is a thick fluid that helps nourish sperm. Without healthy sperm, the human species cannot last. Sperm is made in the testicles and passes up to the opening of the seminal vesicles in still another pair of tubes. There, sperm mixes with the semen.

Here’s what is supposed to happen when a man ejaculates: The mixture of semen and sperm is thrust forward through a man’s urethra and out the tip of his penis. However, the urethra is an open tube. While one part of the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff tube leads forward and out of the body, the other part of the tube leads backward into the bladder.

To make sure that the semen and sperm move forward, and not backward, a tiny circular muscle at the bladder entrance shuts the opening to the bladder during ejaculation. This prevents semen from entering, and creates more pressure pushing semen and sperm out through the penis.

In retrograde ejaculation, the tiny circular muscle does not function normally. As a result, all or part of the semen travels backward into the bladder. Retrograde ejaculation does not interfere with a man’s ability to have an erection or to achieve

orgasm. But it can cause infertility because sperm cannot reach the woman’s uterus.

Retrograde ejaculation has several possible causes. Damage that occurs during prostate, lower back, pelvic or bladder surgery may cause the condition. So might nerve damage that can result from multiple sclerosis or diabetes. The condition is also a possible side effect of certain medications taken for prostate enlargement, depression and psychosis.

Only if the condition interferes with fertility does it require treatment. If it is a side effect of medication, your doctor will switch you to a drug that does not affect ejaculation.

Sometimes it is not possible to restore normal ejaculation. If this is the case, and you want to father a child, a fertility specialist may be able to help.

Drug addiction can affect females as much as males Dr. Wallace: I’m an 18-year-old female. I have never taken any type of illegal drug in my entire life, and I seriously doubt that I ever will.

I’m also positive that all of my many close friends are drug-free, and we all talk about not getting involved with guys who are doing drugs. We are thinking that it must be a male thing to be into drugs. Do you agree?

– Nameless, Goshen, Indiana Dear Nameless: I agree. The American Council on Drug Education has stated that of teen drug addicts, 72 percent are males.

But females do become addicted to drugs, and their addiction is every bit as serious as addiction for males. Please read the following letter from a young mother who had a difficult time overcoming her drug habit: Dr. Wallace: I’m a young mother of two sons. When I was in high school, I took every drug I could get my hands on. I met a young man shortly after I graduated from high school (don’t ask me how I graduated; all I remember of high school is that I wanted to pass driver’s education) and with his love and understanding I went straight. Don’t think it wasn’t a chore, because I was addicted to heroin.

After two wonderful years of marriage, I started taking cocaine and it didn’t take long to discover that I could supplement the family income by selling a little cocaine as a sideline.

Unfortunately (probably fortunately) for me, one of my customers was an undercover cop.

As I write this letter,

I am living proof that drugs can destroy a user’s life.

Dr. Lisa Ridgway at the University of Colorado gave hormone tests to 162 high-achieving teens before final examinations and this is what she found: A week before finals, girls reported significantly more stress than boys. By examination day, girls’ level of stress hormone had risen more than 50 percent – to three times the boys’ stress levels, which were unchanged.

At age 13, both boys and girls had the same stress levels before tests, but as they got older, girls felt more stress while the boys’ stress levels actually dropped.

But even as girls get older and more comfortable in female roles, they still tend to feel uncomfortable about competition, Dr. Ridgeway said.

While girls felt more stress taking examinations, it didn’t affect their grades. In fact, the girls had slightly higher grades.

East should have put the diamond ace back into his hand and instead led a trump. Then the contract would have failed, South being victim to the bad spade break.

“We have one Ford certified master technician and two other ASE-certified techs who work there full time, ”Larson said.

Quick Lane performs everything from maintenance to brakes, suspension, steering, engine diagnostics, drive trains and more, Larson said.

“We do heavy repair, light repair and oil changes. There’s not much we don’t do there.”

Quick Lane carries eleven top brand name tires like Goodyear, Continental, Michelin and more. Plus they will price match anyone on tires!
