video-game discussion delayed

MORRIS – A vape shop is coming to Morris.

The Morris Judiciary and License Committee granted Monday a business license to Dianna Rodriguez, who intends to open a vape shop called 24 Vapor at 1840 N. Division St. The business will sell electronic cigarettes and the liquid used in them.

Rodriguez said some streets in municipalities to the north have multiple vape shops on one street and noted the usage of electronic cigarettes is doubling each year. Electronic cigarettes allow the user to decrease the nicotine they use over the course of time and it has become a technique to quit smoking, Rodriguez said.

“I want to bring a healthier alternative to Morris,” she told the committee.

As are cigarettes, the electronic devices would be sold to customers 18 and older, and be stored behind a counter.

In other news, during open

City Council discussion Monday, Alderman Randy Larson asked fellow councilmen to provide feedback in regard to the possibility of creating a liquor license that would allow Bonnie Ferrari to operate a video-gaming business named Lili Mae’s, at 1828 N. Division St. Larson said he emailed council members, but received no replies.

Ferrari applied in May for a Class E liquor license and was denied. A Class E license allows for the sale of beer and wine but no carry-out sales. According to state code, a liquor license is required to operate a video-gaming business.

Morris has one business, Hook’s Hideaway, that functions as primarily a video-gaming business. Hook’s Hideaway has a Class D license, which is an open bar that can sell any kind of alcohol, but no carry-out.

Ferrari tried to apply again July 6 because two businesses, which were not for video-gaming purposes, were granted licenses since the May meeting.

But Larson suggested the committee and council try to create a license that would allow limited alcoholic beverage sales and specific hours.

Mayor Richard Kopczick described it as an “E-1 license” rather than creating a whole new category. As for specifically what it would entail, Kopczick said Tuesday that would be up to the aldermen. Ferrari is tentatively scheduled to discuss the license again at a Sept.

8 meeting.

Ferrari and her husband, Paul, have stated at each meeting they have no intention of attracting a typical bar crowd, and their clientele at Dwight and Pontiac locations are mostly senior citizens who want to relax.

Alderman Don Hansen has said at both the May and July meetings that he is opposed to allowing more video-gaming businesses in the city. He’s also stated he wants to see how Hook’s Hideaway performs over a year’s time before granting more liquor licenses for the purpose of video-gaming.

• Caitlynn A. Avery, 20, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police Saturday on a Will County warrant on charges of retail theft. She posted bond and was released with a Will County court date of Sept. 16.

• Jonathan L. Cox, 29, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on a charge of domestic battery. He was given a Sept. 14 court date.

• Edward G. Sutkus, 33, of Wilmington, was arrested by Morris police Sunday on a charge of driving under the

influence. He posted bond and was released with a Sept. 14 court date.

• Matthew D. Lyons, 23, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis between 2.5-10 grams.

Liquor store robbed by gunman

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A masked gunman robbed a liquor store Monday night in Channahon. The holdup occurred shortly after 9 p.m. when a man in black clothing and a black ski mask entered USA Liquors, 25228 Reed St., according to Deputy Police Chief Adam Bogart.

“He came in [with] a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money. After taking the cash, he told the employees to lay down on the floor and fled,” Bogart said.

It was not known Tuesday if the bandit left the scene on foot or in a vehicle.

Three employees were in the store at the time of the robbery, according to Bogart, but no customers were present. No one was injured.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call detectives at 815-467-2112.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Donations continue to come into the Community Foundation of Grundy County relief fund for victims of the June 22 EF3 tornado that struck Coal City, Braidwood and unincorporated Grundy County.

But when and how the $255,000 – and counting – is dispersed still is being considered.

“It’s the first time going through a disaster this size, with fewer resources [than the tornado that struck Diamond in 2013], and the elaborate case management system,” Community Foundation Executive Director Julie Buck said.

The June tornado resulted in four times as much damage as the November 2013 tornado in Diamond, but the fund has accumulated about half the donations as the Diamond tornado did, Buck said.

“In the end, we can assure that all money will go out to tornado relief in some form.

We just don’t know how yet,” she said.

“The main push here is to make sure tornado families are registered so data can be collected,” Buck said. “Ev-

eryone needs to be assigned a case manager, even if it’s just to check in or talk things through.”

To date, 366 households have begun their case manage-

ment file and are registered to be eligible for assistance, Community Foundation Program Director Devan Gagliardo said.

More than 800 properties were damaged by the tornado.

The Long-Term Relief Committee is cooperating with case management to identify unmet needs within the community and determine the means of distributing the contributions to those in need, according to the news release.

The LTRC focuses its efforts in six areas – crises counseling, volunteer coordination, construction coordination, community assessment, finance/ donations and case management.

D-201 approves more teachers Morris D-54 waives

MINOOKA – Once again, Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 has approved the hiring of more teachers. Because of late enrollments and expanding subdivisions, seven new positions were approved, four of them already assigned and three serving as backups, as growth during the academic year is anticipated. The action was taken during a special board meeting held Monday.

“Two years ago our district tried to be conservative and got caught with large classrooms and needed to hire more teachers in the middle of the year,” Board Vice President John Clucas said Tuesday. “We can’t help the growth, so we want to provide the best classrooms possible.”

Superintendent Kris Monn said of the four new positions posted, three are elementary school (two second-grade and one kindergarten) positions

and one is for a junior high position. He said “yesterday the trickling of enrollment stopped, but last week we had quite a few still registering, pushing classes to 26 to 27 in the second-grade classes for example.”

Board President Jim Satorius said the board wants to be “proactive rather than reactive” in unanimously approving the hiring of up to three more teachers, instead of having to call another special board meeting in the future.

“If we see a need for a new teacher is coming, we can get them in as soon as possible.

That’s why it’s important to do this now,” Satorius said. “We have 185 more students so far than we did last year, and by semester time, we expect even more.”

Monn said the rise in numbers this close to the new school year is because of both late enrollment and growth in Minooka.

“We are seeing the closing of houses, more excavating of

basements and new neighborhoods,” Monn said.

The schools pushing the classroom size limits are Jones and Aux Sable elementary schools. Satorius said Jones is seeing growth because of new construction across from the school and Aux Sable “is always higher due to the boundaries that are set for that school, and home sales in the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Clucas said the board also discussed possibly leasing a school in Channahon that may be closed for those in the Minooka 201 district with Channahon addresses.

For now, the board hopes they are, and Satorius said they are looking for ways to get people in the district to register their kids at an earlier time to avoid a last-minute crunch. ”We tried incentives such as last year’s rates before as certain date, but it’s only a $4 difference, so that’s not much of an incentive. All of the efforts we tried weren’t successful,” Satorius said.

MORRIS – Compared to other Illinois elementary school districts, Morris Elementary School District 54 ranks in the lower 25 percent when it comes to dollars spent on administration.

By ranking 345 of 375 elementary districts, the board approved, 6-0, at Monday’s meeting a resolution for a waiver of administrative costs limitation hearing.

Board member Bonnie Cap was absent.

“A hearing is typically required any time a school district has more than a 5 percent increase in administrative costs,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said Tuesday. “Because we spend so little, the state allows us to waive the hearing.”

With the addition last year of Jessica Boe as dean and activities director at Shabbona Middle School, the cost increased to $226 a student.

Shaw said even with the additional cost, the district still falls in the bottom 25 percent of Illinois districts when it comes to administrative costs.

The district, which has 1,150 students, has consolidated jobs to keep costs low.

Before the hiring of Shaw, for instance, the district employed a separate business manager.

Fritz said village officials are concerned about residents, as they’ve noticed patience wearing thin while new issues arise that may not always be monetary. Fritz encourages those affected to be mindful of the mental and emotional recovery just as much as the potential of receiving donations.

“We know people are dealing with so many issues,” Fritz said. “It’s a high level of stress when trying to move on while shouldering the burden.”

Crises counseling services are available at Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 E. McArdle Road, Coal City, with Pastor Brad Shumaker, Fritz said. Supplies are still being distributed at Help 4 Hope, 1630 S. Broadway St., Coal City.

The Tornado Call Center remains open and available for questions at 815-518-3047. Information regarding available assistance continues to be distributed through the Grundy County COAD Facebook site as well as other involved agencies and governments.

Buck said a key issue is insurance problems need to be settled before the severity of everyone’s needs can be determined. It’s not as simple as Diamond in 2013, when everyone received the same amount of money from the donated funds, she said.

Buck said 90 percent of residents affected by the tornado are insured, but it’s not fair to distribute the money to those uninsured. Final decisions will come down to specific needs.

Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz said many needs are not identified in the short term, so the LTRC is trying to make sure it doesn’t deplete the fund because some needs don’t present themselves until later.

Place Apartments, a subsidized apartment complex for elderly and disabled residents.

“The whole north wall of the building was torn off, and her items were sucked out,” Marlene Dennison said. “She lost everything.”

Marlene Dennison said immediately following the tornado, the family received supplies and some furniture from Help 4 Hope in Coal City, but they didn’t know where else to turn.

Her daughter had contacted people, she said, but was told there wasn’t help available for her and she didn’t know where else to turn, until Grundy Community Organizations Active in Disaster posted on its Facebook page where residents should call to register for help.

“We saw it posted on Monday, and she’s registering today through We Care,” Marlene Dennison said Tuesday.

“She is bringing in pictures to them.”

Marlene Dennison said she became frustrated knowing money had been donated to help the residents, but not knowing where to go to receive the help.

Through this aid, separate from the foundation’s assistance fund, agencies such as the Tzu Chi Foundation donated Visa gift cards, and The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities provided victims with cash, rent assistance and car repairs, to name a few, Gagliardo said.

6 Final decisions will come down to specific needs “Our Home is Your Home” • TORNADO

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Village Board is taking some extra time to consider a zoning matter that has one resident up in arms.

Jeffrey Dames attended Monday’s board meeting with his attorney to protest a planned rezoning of Dames’ next-door neighbor’s residential property from Residential-1 to Agricultural-2.

According to Channahon Director of Community Development Mike Petrick, the 5-acre property at 24545 S. Ford Road, owned by Dennis Bubinas, is next on the village’s schedule of code-aligning for certain residential properties with detached garages.

Detached garages are not allowed on lots zoned R-1, but are allowed on R-2 and A-2 properties.

Earlier this year, trustees changed the zoning of nine such properties from R-1 to

R-2, Petrick said.

Dames said this particular property also should be zoned R-2, rather than A-2. No A-2 property exists anywhere near the area, he said.

“Agricultural zoning is not in the best interest of the village,” Dames said. “Agricultural zoning does not belong in the middle of an environmentally sensitive area.”

Dames said he was concerned the owner would bring in race cars or turn the property into a “mini-farm,” both of which, he said, would take away from the tranquil nature of the area.

Village Administrator Tom Durkin said an A-2 designation is a “rural resident district” and is more appropriate for the site than an R-2 designation.

It’s a larger property, he said, and the land immediately to the north – also known as Lake Shokakana – is A-1. Zoning the property as R-2 would leave it open to the option to subdivide and add more hous-

es, which Durkin said would “change the whole character of the property.”

According to village code, an A-2 designation is designed “to provide use of lands optimally suited to neither prime agricultural nor urban uses because of location, topography, soil characteristics, wetness, vegetation or other natural or man-induced factors.”

Horses and other large animals are allowed, as are agriculture and crop fields in a limited manner.

Bubinas told the board he preferred an A-2 designation over an R-2, as the former would allow him to build a larger garage that he might like for his hot rod hobby. He does not want to raise large animals on the property.

“I have no intention of raising cattle,” he said.

A vote on the matter was scheduled for Monday, but trustees decided to give it additional consideration until a specially scheduled meeting Aug. 24.

Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO moves to county children’s advocacy center

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lisa Morel Las said the only person who could pull her away from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties was Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

“I’ve worked with him in the past, and I’ve always admired his vision and commitment to the community. He’s not only a strong prosecutor, but he really cares about the community and reaching out to vulnerable people,” she said.

Glasgow said Las’ success at Big Brothers Big Sisters “brought this important community organization to the highest possible level of service on behalf of local children who need mentorship and support.

“We’re pleased she will put her passion and skills to work for the Children’s Advocacy Center as we plan for the expansion of services to sexually abused children and their families,” he said in a news release from his office.

Las said it was a difficult decision, but she chose to take the opportunity and leave her position as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“I feel bittersweet. I’m really proud of everything we were able to accomplish at Big Brothers Big Sisters. But at the same time, it’s really sad to leave,” she said.

In the 11 years she was CEO, she helped increase the organization’s profile and footprint

across Will, Grundy, Kankakee and Iroquois counties to serve more children. She was able to raise more than $1 million in federal funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In her new role, Las said she plans to do the same: raise the profile of the Children’s Advocacy Center and attract more donors to support children.

“I’m really excited to bring it to the next level. … [The center] is kind of Will County’s best-kept secret, which is unfortunate because of all the work it does,” Las said. “Bottom line, it’s there to serve our most vulnerable children.”

Glasgow established the center 20 years ago to improve investigations into cases involving sexual abuse of children, according to the news release. Interviews recorded at the center have been used in the prosecution of thousands of child predators in the past 20 years.

Nashville music producer Bob Johnston dead at age 83

By LUCAS L. JOHNSON II The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Music producer Bob Johnston, who played a key role in landmark recordings like Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” and Johnny Cash’s “At Folsom Prison,” is being remembered as a maverick who helped bring folk rock to Nashville.

Johnston died Friday.

He was 83.

Peter Cooper, an editor at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Johnston helped open Nashville up to music and musicians from other places.

He said Johnston was responsible for Dylan coming to the Music City, and that Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” was one of at least three recordings Dylan and Johnston made in Nashville.

In his memoir, “Chronicles: Volume One,” Dylan wrote that Johnston called him on the phone one day and asked if he was thinking about recording. “Of course I was,” Dylan added.

On the album “Nashville Skyline,” when Dylan can be heard asking, “Is it rolling Bob?” at beginning of one song, it was Bob Johnston he was talking to, said Michael Gray, another editor at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Dylan wrote that working with Johnston “was like a drunken joyride.” He described the producer as “built like a wrestler, thick wrists and big forearms, barreled chest, short but with a personality that makes him seem bigger than he really is ...”

He added, “His idea for producing a record was to keep the machines oiled, turn ‘em on and let ’er rip ...”

Johnston’s influence is showcased in an exhibit at the museum called “Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City.”

Johnston grew up in a musical family in Texas and began pursuing a career in music after a stint in the U.S. Navy.

In the early 1960s, after a short career as a rockabilly artist, he began writing songs for Elvis Presley movies, and traveling to Nashville to record demos.

He would later get a job at Columbia Records in New York. One of the first recordings he produced there was Patti Page’s “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte,” which became a Top 10 hit in 1964. Following that success he began working with Dylan, eventually persuading him to come to Nashville.

Since this recipe takes just minutes to make, these are perfect for entertaining.

By MELISSA D’ARABIAN The Associated Press In the summer, we eat outside nearly every day. Which translates into three months of meals to cook on the grill; more if you live in San Diego, like we do.

Throw in Memorial Day, July Fourth and Labor Day, and even the heartiest of recipe repertoires can be stress-tested. We grill fish, meats, veggies, bread for crostini, lemons for garnish and even leafy greens for trendy salads. Desserts on the grill are part of the plan, too.

We toss on slabs of sweet juicy pineapple, slender triangles of mango or papaya and give char marks to thick slices of watermelon.

This year, though, we grilled something new for the first time – a plantain.

It all started at my daughters’ slumber party. A gaggle of girls decided they wanted to do an impromptu s’mores roast in the backyard. Since we didn’t have any gluten-free graham crackers on hand for my daughter Valentine, I had the idea to use a banana instead. It worked, but the smokiness overwhelmed the delicate banana a little more than we had hoped.

Enter the plantain! It’s a relative of the banana, but it’s a bit sturdier and starchier.

Plantains can be used in both savory and sweet dishes, and can range from potato-like when unripe (green skin) to downright sugary if very ripe (black skin). For most sweet recipes, look for skin that is a mix of yellow and black.

Plantains are a good source of vitamins C and A, and like bananas they are an excellent source of potassium. While they are relatively high in calories (about 200 a plantain, with 28 grams of sugar), half a plantain makes for a very satisfying dessert. Feel free to top the plantain with chocolate chips and marshmallows for a slumber party.

GRILLED TROPICAL PLANTAINS

Start to Finish: 15 minutes Servings: 4 2 large, yellow-brown plantains 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted Grilled tropical plantains get their 1 teaspoon vanilla extract richness from coconut oil, un- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar sweetened coconut and macada1/2 teaspoon kosher salt mia nuts.

2 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut 2 tablespoons chopped macagrilled tropical plantains, which get their richness from damia nuts coconut oil, unsweetened 1 lime, quartered

Heat the grill to medium-high.

Slice the plantains in half lengthwise, keeping the peel intact.

In a small bowl, mix together the coconut oil and vanilla.

Brush the cut side of each plantain half with the coconut oil-vanilla mixture, then sprinkle the halves evenly with coconut sugar and salt.

Use an oil-soaked paper towel held with tongs to oil the grill grates, then place the plantains, cut side down, on the grill.

Grill for 6 minutes, then flip and

sprinkle the shredded coconut and macadamia nuts over the top of the cut sides. Grill for an additional 3 minutes.

Serve immediately with a wedge of lime for squeezing over the tops.

AIMING FOR A BIG SEASON Minooka Indians rebuild, test their roster after graduating four from last year

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Last year, the Minooka girls volleyball team battled from a 23-18 deficit to force a Game 3 against Normal Community in the Class 4A Normal Community Sectional semifinal.

The Indians trailed, 21-17, in the final set, fought back to

earn game point and then lost the match in a heartbreaker, 25-19, 23-25, 29-27.

Three returning starters – Ginger Perinar, Allison Papesh and Emily Hise – put everything on the court, but it wasn’t enough to beat thirdplace state finisher Normal, and the loss left a bad taste with the team.

This year, the Indians look

like a completely different team since they graduated four starters. The different look includes more firepower that can help Minooka end this season in a different way.

“Last year, we had a lot of potential to go far,” Perinar said. “We were that close and just missed it. Based off camp alone this year, I think that we’ll be pretty successful with

our postseason regionals and sectionals. I’m really hoping that we do because this is my last year. I want to go as far as we can, because we haven’t made it past sectionals since 1999.”

“I think that they will succeed more because they do have that sour taste,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said.

“I remember talking to Ginger

after the game last year. They were right there. This year, they really want it.”

The three returning starters are not the only players who want to take this season a step further.

Continued from page 11 sophomore levels. Because the Indians will have a younger team, they will rely on senior leadership from Perinar, Hise, Maddie Alessio and Sydney Arlis. Prosek said the four seniors already have provided excellent leadership, whether it’s setting up the drills on their own or leading by example on the court. The Indians play their first match Aug. 28 at the Plainfield North Invitational.

Although they have a positive outlook going into the season, that tournament will be the first test.

“Once we play in that tournament, we will be able to know where we can go and set realistic goals of what we want to do,” Perinar said. “We don’t know right now because we’re just out of camp, but I think that we have a lot of potential, and it could be a very successful season.”

Minooka could face six area schools – Providence, Plainfield North, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Lemont, Bolingbrook – at the tournament. The Indians will

Although facing strong teams does excite the players, it’s also a good opportunity for Prosek to play with the lineup.

Many players on the team are so athletic that they can play numerous positions. One of those is three-sport athlete Brooklyn Bachmann. She can compete with year-round volleyball players despite not playing club because of her athleticism.

Other athletic players who are position players will fight to become a starter. The tournament also will be an opportunity for one senior to show what she has to offer.

“Senior Maddie Alessio is going to take over the libero

spot,” Prosek said. “She wants it because she’s been waiting in the background to get on that court. All summer and all tryouts, she wants to show that she can do it. Sitting back and waiting to play has made her ready to shine.”

The Indians are excited for this season to begin. Even though many new players are on the roster, some things don’t change. The school pride is there and the rivalry between Minooka and schools such as Joliet Catholic, Plainfield North and Plainfield Central always will be there.

“I’m really looking forward to this season,” Hise said. “It’s going to be a really good year.

It’s going to be different. We’re going to learn because we will be a young team, but I definitely feel like we’re going to play well together. I don’t see any drama on the team because we’re really close.

“We have a lot of good competition, but I’m looking forward to that and conference.

Plainfield North and Central are going to very good, so I can’t wait to play them. It’ll be a battle, but we’re matched John Patsch for Shaw Media pretty evenly. I’m looking for- Minooka’s Emily Hise and Allison Papesh go up for a block against ward to it.”

Pete Rose at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday STAFF REPORTS JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers will welcome Pete Rose to Silver Cross Field on Wednesday for a special one-game appearance. Major League Baseball’s all-time hit king will be in uniform, coaching the Slammers during the game, and be available to meet and sign autographs with fans.

The event will start with a VIP meet and greet session in the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame.

The meet and greet will include a reserved seat ticket to the game, a Slammers baseball to be autographed by Rose, a photo of each participant with Rose and the opportunity to hear a short speech by Rose.

There are a limited number of meet and greet packages available, so fans interested should call the Slammers at 815-7222287 to reserve tickets while space is available.

After this session, Rose will participate in the ceremonial first pitch on the field, and will be on the field during the first two innings as both the Slammers’ first-base and third-base coach during the 7:05 p.m. game.

This will be Rose’s first onfield appearance in uniform in the Chicago area since 1989.

Rose also will be available for autographs on the concourse during the game.

Fans wishing to get an autograph will need to buy a voucher to receive a Rose au-

tograph, and he will sign Joliet Slammers merchandise.

Special event ticket pricing will be in place and no ticket exchanges, vouchers or coupons will be accepted.

Rose played for 24 years in Major League Baseball with the Red, Phillies and Expos.

He holds the record for most hits in a career with 4,256 as well as the record for most career singles (3,215), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and plate appearances (15,890).

During his career, he was a 17-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year, MVP, World Series MVP and three-time World Series champion. In 1999, he was named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

Mundy has eyes on, is confident about becoming starting safety

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com After his second training camp with the Bears and seventh overall, Ryan Mundy knows what he is. The question now is whether the Bears do, too.

This month, Mundy has had to stand on the sideline and watch players in their first or second year start in the safety spot he held down for all 16 games last season.

First was second-year Brock Vereen starting the preseason opener Thursday.

The latest was rookie Adrian Amos running with the first team this past weekend and holding the top spot on the second unofficial depth chart the team released Tuesday.

All the while, Mundy has been Mundy, the defense’s spokesman, one of five players the Bears chose to address the media the first day of camp and the only one who spoke to reporters after Family Fest.

He’s said the right things – but he’s held some confidence in his voice.

Mosquitoes are culprits in spreading West Nile virus Dear Dr. K: I’ve been hearing about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis.

How do these illnesses spread?

What can I do to protect myself?

Dear Reader: West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) are both viral diseases spread by mosquitoes. Infections with these viruses can be dangerous.

In some infectious diseases, as with these, the disease-causing microbe lives in an insect.

When that insect bites a person, the microbe is transferred from the insect to the person.

Often these microbes don’t cause any illness in the insect -- just in us.

West Nile virus was first detected in the United States

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff in 1999. It has now spread through most of the continental United States, and the number of infections has increased dramatically. In 2012, the number of reported cases jumped to 5,674, with 286 deaths. In the U.S., West Nile virus occurs primarily in the late summer or early fall.

Most infected people have no symptoms. Of those who do, most develop what is called West Nile fever. Symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. Occasionally a person might have a skin rash on the

trunk of the body, swollen lymph glands or eye pain.

West Nile fever may last a few days or several weeks.

In a small number of severe cases, West Nile virus can cause encephalitis (a severe inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain). Some of these cases are fatal.

So the good news about West Nile virus is that most people who become infected with it don’t get sick. The bad news is that some get very sick. We don’t understand what makes some people more vulnerable to the virus.

As with West Nile virus, many people infected with EEE have no apparent illness.

In those who do become ill, symptoms range from a mild, flu-like illness to inflammation of the brain, coma and death.

EEE virus is more serious than West Nile virus: About 35 percent of people infected with EEE die. Anyone who develops symptoms should be treated in a hospital.

The best way to protect yourself against both West Nile virus and EEE is to avoid mosquito bites. Use an insect repellent with up to 30 percent DEET. Another repellent, permethrin, should not be used on the skin, just on clothing or mosquito netting.

Since insect repellents are not perfect, you should also try to avoid being exposed to mosquitoes as much as possible.

Mosquitoes are most abundant between dusk and dawn, so try to be indoors at those times.

If you are going to be outside, wear lightweight, long-sleeved tops and long pants sprayed with repellent. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.

Make it a habit to dump out buckets or kiddie pools at the end of each day.

Don’t let this column ruin your summer. Just a tiny fraction of people who get mosquito bites become sick with either West Nile virus or EEE. Enjoy the summer, but take the precautions noted above.
