VICTORIA H. STRUCK

Born: April 29, 1920; in Morris, IL Died: Aug. 16, 2014; in Morris, IL Victoria “Vickie” Helen Struck, died unexpectedly in her home at the age of 94 on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

She was born on April 29, 1920, to Michael and Anna (Matyga) Such and was a life-long resident of Morris. She was raised by her father and her sister, Angela, following the death of her mother in 1928. She was educated in the Morris Schools and also attended the Chicago Beautician’s College.

She proudly served the United States military in World War II from 1943-45 as a Staff Sergeant as an Army WAAC and Air-WAC and in the Photographic Surveillance Division. She earned the decorations of the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American

Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. She returned to Morris and operated Vickie’s Beauty Shop in the Baum building for many years.

Victoria was married to Mr. Walter A. Struck on May 29, 1948, by Monsignor McDonough at Immaculate Conception Church in Morris. Together they lived their entire married lives in Morris always proud of their home and respect for their neighborhood. She continued to operate her beauty shop until the birth of their daughter at which time she became a full time mother and homemaker. Her love of nature and flowers, especially roses, was evident in her beautiful gardens where she spent her time and energy until her death.

Her daughter, Dr. Ann Marie Struck and her husband Paul Jung survive Victoria Struck along with four sistersin-law and a brother-in-law, Mrs. Esther Struck of Morris, Mrs. Elizabeth Struck of Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Bernice) Voss of Joliet and Mrs. Stella Burnetti of Joliet along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Her husband, Mr. Walter Struck preceded her in death in 1985; her parents, three brothers who died in infancy; her sisters, Mrs. Angela Bogacz, Miss Antonia Such and Mrs. Sophie Fosen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas(Helen)Adamowski, Mr. and Mrs. Leo(Mary)Daniels, Mr. and Mrs. John(Elaine)Struck, Mr. Joseph Struck, Mr. Theodore Struck and Mr. Raymond Struck.

Victoria Struck was a life-long member of Immaculate Conception Church.

She was also a weekly volunteer at the Morris Community Hospital for over 25 years in the Surgical Waiting Room.

As a proud Polish-American she was also a life-long member of the Polish National Alliance. She also served the community in the schools as well as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Edward J. Howe, CR officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery with military honors provided by the Morris Color Guard.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.

Memorial gifts designated in memory of Victoria Struck may be directed to Mayo Clinic for Cardiovascular Research or Head and Neck Cancer Research.

Affordable Care Act participation detailed

fsarver@shawmedia.com Officials in Grundy and Will counties are gearing up for the next chance people have to get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act. More than 622,000 Illinois residents have been enrolled in health care plans under the efforts of Get Covered Illinois, the organization reported last week. The annual report for the six-month open enrollment period, which ended in March, details how Get Covered Illinois exceeded expectations through grassroots campaigns, community partnerships and advertising.

The report said about 217,000 people were enrolled through the health insurance marketplace, while about 405,000 others were enrolled through the expanded Medicaid program.

The costs of promoting health insurance coverage under the federal health care law were shown to be some of the highest in the nation, according to an Associated Press report in June.

Residents who didn’t enroll during the first period will have another opportunity to do so from Nov. 15 through Feb. 15. It’s a shorter time frame than last time.

People in Grundy County should contact the health department there for information on health insurance enrollment, said Phil Jass, administrator for the Grundy County Health Department.

He said a count was not available for the number of people enrolled in the county, where people were helped by Jo-

liet-based Services Inc. Jass said Services Inc., Aunt Martha’s Youth Service Center and Health Center and Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers will try to educate and enroll people once again this year.

“We don’t know if it is going to be the same navigators, but we plan on rolling them out in the county,” he said.

Will County health officials plan to try to get as many as 15 people enrolled a week.

“Hopefully there will be community awareness since we’ve gone through this once before,” said Vic Reato, Will County Health Department spokesman.

The Will County Health Department helped enroll more than 3,500, with 860 of them enrolling through the health insurance marketplace, he said. The health department is waiting to hear on funding for the next enrollment phase and plans on hiring additional navigators.

Many people who are eligible for Medicaid coverage don’t believe they are, said Cindy Jackson, in-person counselor manager. She said those people should contact the health department, as well as people interested in enrolling during the next period.

“They can be in front of the line to get enrolled,” she said.

Grundy County residents seeking more information can contact the health department at 815-941-3404. The Will County Health Department hotline for learning more about health insurance coverage for the next enrollment period is 815-727-5990.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Clouds of dust rose into the air Sunday as horses raced around barrels and poles at the Grundy County Fairgrounds.

The riders hung on tight as they raced against the clock during the annual Silver Spurs Horse Show fundraiser. Sometimes, they even had to work against their free-spirited horses, who didn’t want to cooperate as they were urged around the ring.

“It’s a fun day,” said 9-year-old Luke Hawkins, with the Coal City Community 4-H club. “My favorite is the plug race because you have to go as fast as you can and I like going fast.”

The event was open to any interested rider, regardless of whether they were a 4-H member. This sets the show apart from horse competitions held during last month’s 4-H fair.

Liz Collins, who was with Silver Spurs 4-H club when she was younger, came back to compete in the 19 and older division against other area adults.

“I am the club’s horse project leader, and I help the kids all summer prepare to compete,” Collins said. “I like watching the kids who come

with their horses. It’s fun to watch them grow.”

Collins took the weekend off from her typical horse shows with the National Open Horse Association and open breed shows, where she has competed every weekend since May, to participate in the local show.

“I like this show because it’s a laid back competition, and if you don’t do well it’s not a big deal,” Collins said.

Skeeter Ehrman said the show gives people a place to show their horses and show what Grundy County 4-H has to offer, while raising money for the Silver Spurs club.

“We’re lucky enough to still have enough interest in horses that our program is always on the rise,” Ehrman said.

Ehrman’s daughter Aubrey Ehrman, 13, said she likes the show because it gives her a chance to test the skills she spends three days a week perfecting.

Public works project proves GOP nominate Kinsella for County Board not as costly as anticipated

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A project originally intended to be “in-house” will cost the city $34,650, thanks to a shortage in public works labor.

Replacing curbs and gutters along Park Boulevard was on the to-do list for Morris public works crews, but a busy summer clearing storm debris kept city workers from getting to the project.

“We were planning on doing that project in house,” Morris Mayor Kopczick said.

“However, due to the storm that hit and the massive amount of clean up that has been required, we just don’t have the time to dedicate to that.”

Kopczick added the city lost about 15 student workers once kids returned to school this week.

“Now, we don’t have the folks we need,” he said. “We’ve got Corn Fest coming, and we don’t have all of our kids so things get a little tougher this time of year.”

With no extra workers, the city extended its annual street maintenance program, being completed by D Construction, to include the Park Boulevard project.

The Morris City Council approved Monday the $34,650 extension to the street maintenance budget.

Although unexpected, the added expense will not put the city over its annual budget, Kopczick said.

“Every year, hundreds of people are killed and thousands are severely injured as a result of alcohol and drug-related crashes in Illinois. It only takes seconds to become a victim without warning or choice. Impaired drivers make choices. They choose their weapons – vehicles and alcohol, or drugs.”

MINOOKA – Longtime Minooka resident Debra Jo Kinsella has been nominated by the Republican Central Committee to run for Grundy County Board in a special election scheduled for November.

“The Republican Party has been very supportive, so I was happy to have my name Debra Jo put forward,” Kinsella Kinsella said.

The Nov. 4 special election is for the county board seat Teryl Lundeen held. Lundeen was two years into her four-year term

when she resigned in June amid questions about her residency.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland has said Lundeen’s residency in Will County while serving on the board was legal based on a Illinois Supreme Court decision.

David Nelson of Minooka was appointed at August’s county board meeting to fill Lundeen’s position, a seat he will hold until the special election determines who will serve Lundeen’s remaining two years, Republican Central Committee Chairman Mike Mattingly said.

Nelson is running for a four-year term on the board.

Kinsella is the first candidate put forth for the special elec-

tion for Lundeen’s seat.

“Grundy County has been very good to me for a lot of years,” Kinsella said. “I’d like to have a chance to sit in that seat and give some of that back to the county.”

Kinsella was the director of the Grundy County University of Illinois Extension for more than 17 years and has raised her family in Grundy County.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing and a master’s degree in Business Administration. She works as a certified instructor for Joliet Junior College and is active in many community organizations.

Mattingly said the winner of the special election will likely begin in December.

MORRIS – Several Morris Community High School administrators decided Monday to take on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Jeff Dinelli challenged Principal Kelly Hussey on Monday morning to take part in the challenge, and Hussey went on to challenge other administrators – superintendent Pat Halloran, assistant principal Jeff Johnson and athletic director George Dergo – to see if they were interested in participating.

“I saw it coming. My son got the challenge, and I thought about how to fulfill it when it came,” Hussey said. “What a great idea to further the effort across the country and across the world.”

The administrators decided to meet after school in front of the main office doors outside the school, where the captains of the football team could pour large buckets of ice and water over their heads.

The challenge originated online and has taken off since July 29, with more people taking the challenge each day.

Many people are not only doing the challenge but also contributing to the ALS Association financially.

“As an administrative team, we decided to donate $100 to the association,” Jeff Johnson said. “We’re challenging the executive board of the student council to participate and raise even more.”

According to www.alsa.org, as of Monday, the ALS Association has received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to Aug. 18). These donations have come from existing donors and 307,598 new donors to the association.

CHANNAHON – Just in its third year, Will County Forest Preserve District’s Music at McKinley is fast becoming a popular summer event in Channahon.

The car show started at 6 p.m. Saturday and by 6:30 p.m. sheriff’s police were routing cars to a field farther down the road. The peninsula on the Des Plaines River was packed with vehicles, so Forest Preserve volunteers in golf carts were shuttling families back and forth to Kerry Sheridan Grove for the event.

Others were content to make the hike on foot, carrying lawn chairs and coolers; some with kids in tow.

“This event continues to grow better and better every year,” Forest Preserve District board president Don Gould said.

The outdoor concert and car show is a big event for Channahon, Gould said. New this year were fireworks scheduled for the end of the night.

The cars registered in the show nearly doubled from the previous year and reached 180.

Brett Wheeler, owner of Body Werks in Joliet, brought his 1969 Cougar to display.

“This is by far the best event of the season,” he said.

The Forest Preserve District purchased what was formerly known as Moose Island in 2007. The property was developed and now includes the Four Rivers Environmental Center, walking and hiking trails and a covered pavilion

BRAIDWOOD – An update to Braidwood’s prostitution ordinance could mean additional village revenue.

The village will now impose a $750 fine on anyone involved in prostitution. It also allows the village to seize property associated with the crime, including drugs, vehicles and cash.

The ordinance was passed during the village’s July board meeting.

Mayor Bill Rulien said the village does not have a problem with prostitution, but Braidwood officials have made an effort to combat drug use in the area.

He said the fine is just another method of attacking the local drug problem, particularly in instances when people exchange drugs for sex.

“It’s just another tool we can use to fight drugs,” Rulien said. “This is a town where we have really stepped up our drug enforcement. We’re really big about breaking down doors here. Our police department has conducted about 19 or 20 raids in the last year or so.”

According to state law, exchanging sex for anything of value is punishable with probation, prison time, rehabilitation programming and expensive fines. Second and third offenses carry dramatically harsher punishments.

Braidwood Administrator Rich Girot said he discovered the village’s ordinance did not mirror state law and included no local-level fines.

As it was, the ordinance only fined the person who owned the business or residence where the act was committed. It had no provisions for the people actually engaged in the crime.

“We had an old ordinance.

It was about 40 years old.

We’re just trying to update it so it mimics the state statutes.” Girot said.

“We didn’t really have any fines or a way to prosecute people,” he continued.

Rulien said drug busts seizures have represented a substantial source of village revenue. Property seized during prostitution arrests will only add to the village’s seizure fund.

“We bought a boat-load of new squad cars and computers with the forfeiture money from the drug seizures,” Rulien said.

However, Girot said the update solely stemmed from the village’s desire to be in accordance with state law.

“We like to make sure all of our ordinances are up to date,” Girot said.

While village officials do not anticipate too many violations, Girot said it’s important to be prepared.

“Now, we are ready in case we need to take action,” Girot said.

Braidwood imposes new prostitution fine

Minooka hosts mobile veterans medical unit

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit of Hines VA Hospital was available to area veterans Monday morning and afternoon in the Minooka Village Hall parking lot.

“It’s the first time we’ve been out here to this location,” Mobile Medical Unit social worker Tyler Goodwine said.

“It’s been a little slow, but it’s still been a good day.”

Goodwine said most of the veterans who visited the unit Monday came in for assessments.

Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Ken Buck said the unit comes to the American Legion in Morris the first Monday of every month. Beginning this summer, the unit has added other Grundy County locations to its stops on the third Mondays of each month.

So far, it has visited Coal City, Gardner and now Minooka. Buck said he is trying to get a site secured for a Mazon stop next month.

“We don’t have a VA clinic in Grundy County,” Buck said, “so this is nice because it gets services we want veterans to have access to nearby. We are trying to bring more services that our veterans need here.”

Buck said when the unit is in Morris, it averages visits from about 10 veterans. Mobile unit staff include a nurse prac-

Despite health reform, demand remains for clinic

JOLIET – Despite the advent of the Affordable Care Act this year, Will-Grundy Medical Clinic Executive Director Shawn West believes there still is a need for a free care clinic in the area.

Even with Obamacare, many fixed-income families will find premiums and out-of-pocket expenses unaffordable, she said.

“We are a safety net provider for health care,” West said. “We have some patients that are Medicaid eligible, but they’re waiting for their application to be processed, so we still see those patients. Others have been quoted a rate from the marketplace that they can’t afford.”

Many patients served through the clinic sometimes wait months for dental and medical care. That list will only grow if health care volunteers don’t step up, West said.

The clinic remains entirely dependent on a strong volunteer base, she said, but the numbers have declined over the years.

“We want to serve even more patients,” said West, who stepped into the new leadership role in December, replacing longtime executive director J.D. Ross. “The dental wait-list is significant. People are waiting months to get in for dental.”

That’s even with the decline in patient visits since open enrollment in Obamacare started earlier this year. The clinic saw about 570 patients – including those needing prescriptions – in July 2013. A year later, that number had dropped to 450.

More patients could be served if more volunteers, including physicians, nurses and office staff, would give of their time, West said.

The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic serves patients who otherwise would “fall through the cracks,” said Janet Long, spokeswoman for Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

“Will-Grundy Medical Clinic helps fill the gap for those without coverage,” Long said.

“We recognize the clinic for what they do for this community. The clinic is completely aligned with our own mission – that is, to improve health of area residents. And they do that regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.”

From December until July, the clinic experienced a decline in patients served, but – unlike other free health care clinics nationwide that are closing their doors with the advent of Obamacare – Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is in it for the long haul, West said.

The clinic’s success helps reduce emergency room visits and re-admissions to hospitals, according to Beth Hughes, president and CEO for Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

“Regardless of health reform, we’re still seeing a great deal of patients who are under-insured or uninsured coming into the ER,” Hughes said.

“The free clinic serves as a safety net. We want to serve far more patients at the clinic far more than we have historically.

To do that, we need more people to volunteer.”

These are services not typically offered through expanded Medicaid programs, but would be free to patients at the clinic, she said.

The University of Illinois Extension is offering its services to the clinic by providing training to volunteer nurses on nutrition counseling, too, West said.

“That’s the direction health care is going in,” West said.

“Prevention really is key. If you want to impact someone’s life, help them develop good eating and exercise habits.”

What originally started as a cottage town and summer retreat destination has evolved into the roughly 15,600-population village of Shorewood.

While Shorewood was incorporated on November 27, 1957, with just 177 ballots cast, it had a long history before that, according to the village’s website.

Shorewood began as a small fishing and resort community, known as Troy. Albert H. Bruning purchased farmland from the Meyer family in 1926 and subdivided the land, selling small lots along the DuPage River for summer cottages. These cottages today are charming year-round homes nestled in the Oaks along the DuPage River.

Lifetime resident Cookie Kirkland, also a village trustee, recently spoke with her mother about the area’s history. Her mother moved to the area in 1937. Her mother’s family rented a home on Grove Street be-

fore moving to a house on the water.

Kirkland’s mother shared that prior to the 1940s, families used to come out for the summer and stay in the beach cottages. Every year, the Shorewood Beach Improvement Association would dam the river and put rafts out for swimming and diving.

Somewhere around the 1940s, Kirkland’s mother said people began staying in the area year round. When those living in the community decided they wanted to incorporate the village, they had to raise the money to hold elections for incorporation, according to Kirkland.

When they still fell short, resident Edwin McHugh and Paul Puhl provided the rest of the money, according to Kirkland. At its incorporation, the village had a population of just 358 people.

“I love it here,” Kirkland said. “That’s why I never left.

Even though we’re not so small anymore, I still feel like we have that small town feel.”

Lack of coverage of Edgar at State Fair perplexing I’m not sure why, but the surprise appearance by former Gov. Jim Edgar at the Illinois State Fair’s Republican Day last week didn’t generate much media coverage.

Despite the fact that Edgar is a Republican, this was not an easy “get” for Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner. I’m told it took weeks of careful wooing and negotiations through one of Edgar’s old cronies.

Edgar backed state Sen. Kirk Dillard in the GOP primary against Rauner, but he has also expressed public and private concerns about how Rauner is portraying himself on the stump and about how that confrontational attitude could manifest itself if he’s elected governor.

Meanwhile, four years ago I wrote that Gov. Pat Quinn wouldn’t know a campaign theme if it was bleeding to death in his front yard. His 2010 State Fair Governor’s Day speech was rambling, disjointed and unfocused.

Not this year. Quinn’s theme so far is pretty darned clear: Bruce Rauner is an out-oftouch billionaire, whose policies would harm working people.

But can it work? So far, the attacks seem almost juvenile, catty and not well produced. “Look! Over there!

Rauner is rich! He’s rich, I tells ya!”

The Quinn campaign appears to be following the Obama 2012 script very closely (and that script was based in part on Quinn’s 2010 campaign against Bill Brady). The first thing they have to do is establish in voters’ minds that Rauner is a plutocrat. Once that message is baked in, the big hits connecting him to nursing home and hospital deaths and whatever else the Quinnsters have in their opposition

In contrast, the GOP operatives who attended Republican Day four years ago were upbeat and hopeful, but quite concerned about the physical mechanics of GOP nominee state Sen. Bill Brady’s campaign. Those fears turned out to be justified. This time around, there were few if any fears expressed about the way their guy is running his show.

And probably for good reason. The Rauner folks say the Republican Governors Association has been tracking the number of contacts made at the doors by GOP gubernatorial campaigns.

Rauner’s door-to-door contact effort so far ranks No. 1 in the nation – even ahead of Texas, which has a far larger population than Illinois.

Rauner, by the way, left after his State Fair appearance for a 38-county bus trip blitz through Downstate Illinois.

The schedule looks brutal.

The idea is to pack as many Downstate appearances in before Labor Day and then focus mainly on the Chicago media market until November. It’s the smart move because Downstate is so huge that it can’t be easily and quickly traversed.

The governor, on the other hand, has focused much of his summertime attention on the Chicago area, perhaps because polls show he has real trouble with his Democratic “base.”

COAL CITY – It’s not often that you see a playoff-quality baseball game in the third game of the season. Then again, it’s not often two teams of the quality of Minooka and defending IESA Class 3A champion Coal City lock horns, either.

The two Illinois Valley Conference rivals met Monday afternoon on Coal City’s field, and staged an instant classic.

In the end, Coal City’s Mickey McDowell walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, forcing in Austin Pullara with the game’s only run as the Warriors (3-0) came away with the 1-0 victory.

“A walk-off walk isn’t the greatest way to win a game, but we’ll take it,” Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said.

“This was a very good junior high baseball game. There’s usually a little more scoring than this, and a tight game will be 6-5 or 5-4. But this one, the pitching was very good on both sides and both sides played good defense.

“I am sure we will meet up with Minooka again a couple more times before the season’s over, and those games will probably be just as good.”

McDowell’s pitcher, seventh-grader Payton Hutchings, was very, very good Monday.

Hutchings went the full seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out nine against no walks. He worked his way out of a few jams, and his defense helped him out, too.

In the top of the first, Minooka’s Zack Stoner and Gage Conner led off with singles through the middle, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Hutchings then struck out the next two batters before inducing a fly out to right to end the inning. In the top of the fifth, Minooka’s Tim Barys led off with a single, but was picked off first by Coal City catcher Dustyn Muzzarelli. But what they don’t anticipate is a three-way competition for a spot, especially at starting quarterback.

However, that’s the case facing coach Joe Curry and his staff at the University of St. Francis as the 2014 campaign draws near.

Senior Ryne Van Gennep and juniors Trace Wanless and Mitch Brozovich all are in competition to determine who will be under center when the 20th-ranked Saints kick off their season Sept. 6 against Olivet Nazarene at Memorial Stadium.

Van Gennep, a Lincoln-Way East graduate, has been at USF throughout his five-year career. Wanless, from Glenbard South, is in his third season after transferring from Saint Xavier. Brozovich, a Minooka graduate, is new to the school after transferring from Minnesota State.

It’s a far cry from recent years when the Saints relied heavily on E.J. White to lead the way. During the past four years, White threw for more than 10,000 yards and accounted for 96 percent of the 1,400plus passes USF attempted.

“The bottom line is that we’re going to be pretty darn good at the quarterback position,” Curry said. “Pretty much what we’ve been doing in camp is circling the three of them in with our starting

They’ve been competing every single day and know that if they have a bad practice, they move down the depth chart. So that competition has made our football team a ton better.

“This is a problem that we haven’t had here. We had (Morris graduate) John Goolsby and E.J. White, who were both our guy. Now we’re in a situation where it’s ‘Who’s next?’ You can’t replace an E.J. White but I don’t know if there’s going to be much of a

dropoff when you see us play quarterback. This is the first time since I’ve been here that we had this type of a situation at any position. At the NAIA level, you don’t have three quality guys at the same spot.

“They all bring us something different. Ryne is very smart and puts the ball where we want him to. Trace has a great arm and makes a ton of plays, like he did last year for us at receiver. And Mitch is great in the run game and throws the ball OK and is right there. I think the thing that determines who wins

the job is which one does not turn the football over because that’s going to make our team better and give us a chance to win games.”

Beside competing for the quarterback spot, Brozovich is just happy to be playing a whole lot closer to his family and friends.

“This is very unusual and it’s probably the only position on our team where three guys are battling it out,” Brozovich said. “You only get limited

chances in practice, so you have to make them count and if you don’t, then you’re kind of out of luck.

“All three of us are decent athletes, so they can pretty much stick us anywhere on the field. I missed my family quite a bit being seven hours away. I like how on the field it’s a battle but off the field we’re friends. And I like the camaraderie of the players and coaches.”

For their part, the trio is excited about the competition and believe, like their coach, that the unusual situation will only make the Saints better.

“With everything up for grabs this year, it makes it fun,” said Van Gennep. “Once E.J. left, we all knew that the spot was up for grabs. E.J. was a great quarterback and I had the pleasure of backing him up for four years, so I got to know the offense.

“At the end of the day, when we’re at meetings, we’re friends, but when we’re on the field, it’s business and we all understand that. The expectations for this year are high but they’re not overwhelming. We want to have fun, get after it and be the best team that we can be.”

Wanless caught 48 passes for 494 yards and had five touchdowns, thanks to hookups with White a year ago, to earn all-conference honors.

Now, he hopes to throw to returning All-American Troy Torrence, who like him, started his career at Saint Xavier.

MORRIS – Brett Sontag was more than happy to have fellow competitor John Nutley roll the dice to decide the invert for the third and final segment of Friday’s Frank Welch Memorial at Grundy County Speedway.

Nutley rolled a seven, which happened to be where Sontag finished in the second segment.

Sontag took the pole position and ran with it, leading all 34 laps of the final segment to claim the overall title.

The third feature wasn’t much of a battle, although Sontag did have Larry Schuler lurking relatively close behind

during the final half.

Schuler held on for second, while Ricky Baker, Eddie Hoffman, Chris Cooling and Dave Gentile Jr. completed the top six.

The first feature, lined up with the fastest qualifier on the pole, saw Baker lead all 30 laps. There was a brief battle for second between Paul Shafer Jr. and Anthony Danta, but Shafer eventually settled in to claim the spot. Third went to Sontag, ahead of Hoffman, Danta and Gentile.

Holmes looks to repair his NFL career in Chicago

aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Santonio Holmes will spend the next two weeks trying to revive his NFL career with the Bears.

He’s a former Super Bowl MVP and 1,000-yard receiver.

The 30-year old Holmes also arrives with a reputation as a malcontent, one who threw teammates and coaches under the bus regularly.

He reunites in Chicago with former Steelers and Jets teammates, all of whom said Monday that despite his reputation, Holmes has no relationship repairing to do with them.

“They didn’t consult me at all, but I would’ve vouched for him,” said left guard Matt Slauson, who was in the huddle Holmes was reportedly jettisoned from by his teammates as the Jets were trying to clinch a postseason berth in Week 17 of the 2011 season.

“I like the guy. I think he’s a great teammate. Things out in New York got overblown just because of the way things went on there.”

Slauson, whose locker is directly next to Holmes’, called him a “passionate guy,” but said Holmes wasn’t the only player frustrated in the Jets locker room. Holmes was released in March, however, with two years left on a fiveyear, $50 million pact.

Tight end Matt Mulligan, teammates with Holmes in New York from 2010-11, said he knows Holmes better than any media outlet, and has the utmost respect for him as a teammate and player.

“We all got along up there,” Mulligan said. “I respect Santonio; he’s a great player, and

I think he’ll really be able to help this team.”

Coming off consecutive injury-shortened seasons, Holmes can help the Bears without being the explosive playmaker he was in Pittsburgh. The Bears have a gaping hole at No. 3 receiver, and Holmes’ punt return experience might also be of value.

But no current Bear had a closer glimpse of Holmes’ dynamic skills in Pittsburgh than safety Ryan Mundy, a rookie the same season Holmes was crowned Super Bowl XLII MVP after his last-second catch beat the Cardinals.

Like Slauson and Mulligan, Mundy said he has fond memories of Holmes, a playmaker he recalls regularly “taking quick slants 60 yards to the house,” but none of the player who would go on to burn bridges in Pittsburgh and New York.

Mundy did acknowledge that the Steelers’ veteran locker room wasn’t conducive for that type of behavior, and he sees a lot of similarities in the environment coach Marc Trestman has created with the Bears.

“That’s the first thing that I felt when I came here in April – wow, this kind of reminds me of Pittsburgh,” Mundy said. “… And that’s a good thing.

You come here, you’re a Chicago Bear, and we’re going to embrace you with open arms.”

For his part, Holmes on Monday said whatever reputation has preceded him in prior stops remains in the past.

“It’s neither here nor there right now,” Holmes said. “…

Being in this new organization is a new move for me and a great opportunity for me to take advantage of and be part of a great organization.”

Moss more than Peggy Olson

Special to The Washington Post NEW YORK — Elisabeth Moss, best known as Peggy Olson, “Mad Men’s” buttoned-up but ambitious secretary-turned-copywriter, smiles with her whole face while talking about her latest project, “The One I Love.”

The film, written and directed by newcomers Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell, respectively, centers on a married couple (Moss and Mark Duplass) trying to navigate the growing space between them with help from a quirky therapist. He suggests a retreat, which causes both to consider dimensions they never knew were possible. After getting a taste of the eccentric Charlie Kaufman-inspired powers of the properties’ guesthouse, Moss’s character suggests with a gleeful curiosity that they might explore this new world. If that sounds vague and slightly confusing, it’s by design. The filmmakers don’t want viewers to know much going into the movie, and that sometimes trickled down to the cast.

“The scene where I have to explain to Mark what’s going on in the guesthouse, I walk in and he’s freaking out, and I have to tell him what’s happening — I so barely understood what was happening myself!” Moss enthusiastically explains.

It required 10 takes and a combination of Lader’s intricately constructed Albee-esque dialogue and carefully calibrated improv between Moss and Duplass, who’s an accomplished writer, director and producer in his own right. In fact, the genesis of this project was a single sentence he had scribbled down and passed to Lader and McDowell.

“We didn’t want it to sound like improv. We didn’t want to be one of those indie movies where

I like those movies, but we wanted this to have a more classic feel,” Moss explains. The 32-yearold actress, who’s been in show business a whopping 24 years, had experience with broader improv with Jonah Hill and Russell Brand in “Get Him to the Greek,” but this process felt quite different.

“This wasn’t about making everyone laugh all the time. It was about telling a story,” she says.

“Every night, Justin would write the scenes for the next day. We’d sit and go over it. Sometimes it would take 10 minutes and sometimes an hour.” Moss and Duplass would chart lines they would each say. “We just need to make sure we get to this point or hit that emotional beat,” Moss emphasizes. The last 30 pages, she’s quick to point out, are entirely scripted, including her favorite scene, which is impossible to describe without spoilers.

“You don’t want to know what happens in a movie.

You know when you watch

a trailer and they tell you the whole movie and you’re totally [mad]? We don’t want to do that to the audience.

It’s not like ‘The Sixth Sense’ or anything,” Moss emphasizes.

Moss was particularly drawn to the relationship that’s at the heart of the film, and many conversations during filming were focused on the specifics they were creating along with more general and philosophical ruminations on coupling. “The idea that you present this person in the beginning of a relationship.

You bring out all your best qualities, and you’re like 20 percent better than you are.

You bring out this shiny version of yourself, but then after four years, you’re more yourself. And whatever that means. How does that affect the relationship, and how do you get back some of that magic you had in the beginning?”

This led to talks about the ideal partner and how a man’s ideal differs from a woman’s. Moss and producer Mel Eslyn represented the women. “One of the big

things that we discovered was that men think that women want them to be super cool and slick and smooth, but in reality, women find that creepy and sleazy,” Moss says. Outside the sometimes complicated process of measuring nuance between nice and doting (which is also apparently a turnoff), Moss says sweetly, “We actually just want you to make us laugh and make us feel like you’ve been listening to what we’ve said.”

These revelations (along with shooting) took place in two weeks on an idyllic compound in Ojai, California, that doubled as lodging for the cast and crew. The experience reminded Moss of summer camp. “I lived next door, and we all lived around or on the property.

We ate dinner together every night. On our days off, I’d wander into the house and people would just be hanging out on their computers or going to the pool.”

While she’d been splitting her time between New York and Los Angeles for the duration of “Mad Men,” Moss is happy to be back on the East Coast and in New York, where she moved almost 13 years ago to do an off-Broadway play, Richard Nelson’s “Franny’s Way” at Playwrights Horizons.

It’s been reported that she’s in talks to star in a coming Broadway revival of “The Heidi Chronicles,” but she could offer only a coy smile in response. “I haven’t done anything since I did ‘The Children’s Hour’ in London, and I’m kind of itching to have that experience again. And it means I get stuck in New York for six months, which I love.”

She doesn’t favor Broadway or any medium for that matter. “I don’t care how big it is, how long it takes to shoot or what I’m making. If I think it’s a cool script and story and a character that I find challenging.”

And another thing: The young man might benefit from a cardiac support group to lessen his feelings of isolation or inadequacy. He suffered trauma that led to – and created – that scar.

As a baby makes his way through the vaginal birth canal, he may stretch – or even tear or damage – the pelvic floor muscles.

Komaroff You are more likely to have pelvic floor damage if your baby weighs more, if you’ve had more than one vaginal birth and if you spend more time in the “pushing” stage of labor. Having an episiotomy (a surgical cut made to expand the vaginal opening during delivery) also increases the risk of pelvic floor damage.

The following strategies can help you manage your incontinence: • Bladder training. This program of urinating on schedule enables you to gradually increase the amount of urine you can comfortably hold.

• Fluid management Cutting down on the amount of fluids you drink can help bring incontinnce under control.

• Pelvic floor exercises. These exercises strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.

• Cognitive behavior therapy.

This type of “talk therapy” is used to help people cope with, and control, both physical and psychological disorders.

• Avoiding certain beverages.

I’ve had patients who discovered that their incontinence improved if they avoided alcoholic and carbonated beverages, coffee and tea.

If it helps a patient, I urge them to do so.

• Losing weight. If you are overweight, losing weight may help improve your incontinence.

If these changes are not sufficient, ask your doctor about other treatment options, including medication and surgery.

Medications can be particularly helpful with urge incontinence.

Yet all medicines have side effects, and the strategies I mention above usually control the problem successfully.

A reminder to stay healthy Teens: Do you lay off junk foods, get proper rest, exercise, and ration your TV-watching time?

If your answer is yes, congratulations! But you are the exception, not the rule.

According to a study in The Journal of The American Medical Association, U.S. children 18 and younger are adding unwanted pounds at an alarming rate. In the past decade, the percentage of significantly overweight children has almost doubled.

In prior studies, it took 30 years for the overweight percentage to double. This is an alarming statistic.

Just a reminder: Obese teens usually spend their entire lives being overweight!

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to respond to the girl who was debating whether she should continue going steady with her boyfriend who was leaving for a four-year military stint. All her family and friends were encouraging her to break off the relationship for “logical” reasons, and you agreed.

I can understand where you are all coming from, but life itself isn’t always logical. My boyfriend is in the military overseas and has two more years left to serve of a four-year term. In the past two years, I have only seen him once and that was for a grand total of 20 minutes. He had a very short layover at an airport seven hours from my home. I drove there and back in one day.

Four years is just a minor inconvenience when we plan on being together the rest of our lives. Being separated from a loved one for 1,460 days isn’t easy. It takes heaps of courage, dedication and strength.

Get into the habit of good habits

Confucius said, “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that carry them far apart.”

That certainly applies to bridge players – although claiming that all players’ natures are alike would be stretching the truth.

This week we are exploring some common habits of players that can cost points.

Look at the North and East hands. Against four hearts, West leads the club six. How should East plan the defense?

South opened with a weak two-bid, showing a respectable sixcard suit and 5-10 high-card points.

One can be a tad liberal when nonvulnerable. North understandably took a shot at game. He knew that they might lose the first four tricks in the black suits, but maybe the contract was laydown, or perhaps West might lead a diamond, letting South run for home with hearts headed by the king-queen.

The adage that does not work on this deal is “return your partner’s suit.” That is much more likely to be right in no-trump than in a suit. Here, if East returns a club, West wins the trick but is endplayed. He cannot do better than to exit with a diamond to dummy’s jack. But South continues with the heart ace and another trump to take one spade, five hearts and four diamonds.

East can see three probable winners in the heart king, club ace and club king. (West would not have been likely to lead from jack-high clubs.) The fourth trick has to come from spades. If West holds that ace, there is no hurry, but if he has the king, there isn’t a moment to lose.

At trick two, East must shift to the spade seven (top of nothing).

Then the contract will fail.
