MORRIS – Sitting on a curb watching firefighters battle a blaze in their second-story apartment isn’t how Doug Howard and Crystal Koetz planned to spend Howard’s birthday Monday. The couple returned home from lunch and found a fire in their living room.

When they opened the door to their apartment, Howard said the fire blew out the windows facing Washington Street.

No one was injured as the two escaped the building.

Neither of their two neighbors were home when the fire started, according to Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes. Firefighters had water on the fire within four minutes, and he credited the quick response of the engine from Sta-

tion 1 for getting the fire out before it spread.

“The fire was just coming into the hallway when they got up there with the water line,” Steffes said. “If they had to come from Station 2, it would have been much farther.”

He said he previously initiated a change to staffing, increasing the staff from four to seven and adding an engine company back downtown to fire Station 1 for situations such as the Monday afternoon fire. He said many of the downtown buildings are older and connected via the basement, or in some cases their upper floors, which can allow a fire to spread rapidly.

Steffes said the dollar amount of damage was uncertain, as the businesses – Red Carpet Travel and Our Home to Yours – below the affected apartment also have damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Steffes said.

Kenney, treasurer for the cemetery board, worries how members can keep the cemetery looking nice for those buried there as the organization has come into financial difficulties paying for the cost of mowing and insurance.

“The sad thing is we have $26,000 that we are not allowed to touch that is ruled by the [state] comptroller’s office,” Kenney said. “We can borrow it if we need to, but it would have to be paid back by the end of the year.”

Kenney said these problems aren’t unique to the small rural cemetery, as other cemeteries throughout Illinois are facing similar issues.

Phyllis Breisch, who has sat on the board for more than 28 years, said 15 percent of the money used for purchasing a plot goes into the comptroller fund for perpetual care.

In years past, the fund’s interest helped pay operating expenses, but with interest rates at 1 to 2 percent, and the small amount Brookside has in the fund, it isn’t enough to pay the

The cemetery board pays for mowing, garbage disposal and insurance required on the land. The only income it has is when a plot is sold.

“Our expenses are small.

It’s just insurance, disposal service and mowing,” Breisch said. “We don’t have enough to

pay even the mowing.”

She said it has come to the point that there is less than $1,000 in the account.

Kenney said the cemetery has been in this position before, three years ago. The board asked for and received donations.

Kenney said she donated a

portion last time, but is unable to do so again. She hopes others will step forward and help the group take care of the cemetery.

“We really need help,” she said.

Breisch said the only alternative the board has is to hand over care to Mazon Township,

which it doesn’t want to do.

“If the township has to take over it will be a strain on the township,” Kenney said. “That will have to come from taxpayers.”

There are three cemeteries in the town of Mazon, and if all end up in the same position, the township would be responsible for all of the cemeteries.

The all-volunteer cemetery board has had its share of expenses and work that also took some of the finances.

Several years ago there was a mausoleum that deteriorated to the point the board felt the building needed to be torn down.

The board chose to rebury those who were in the mausoleum and give each a headstone.

The board covered the expense.

“A lot of them had no family left,” Kenney said. “We had to bury them and give them a headstone.”

Diamond, Ottawa among new enterprise zones approved by Illinois

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity announced Monday that 49 new enterprise zones were approved – but not certified – for this year, including the Ottawa, LaSalle & Grundy County Enterprise Zone that was set to expire in 2016. The approval also includes a new enterprise zone for Diamond.

But IDCEO Director Jim Schultz said in a written statement the agency will not certify the 49 newly named enterprise zones because of current fiscal uncertainty and the state’s ongoing budget impasse.

“Local and state tax incentives are important business development tools, but cannot be truly effective while the state continues to bleed jobs due to high costs of doing business,” Schultz said in the statement.

The original Ottawa zone has added Channahon, Coal City and Morris, according to

Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of the Grundy Economic Development Council, while Diamond applied for and received it’s own zone.

“The good news is not just ours was approved but Diamond too,” Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said.

“We’re happy to be through this part of the process.”

The enterprise zone program was created in 1982 to stimulate economic growth and revitalization in depressed areas of the state, according to the website of the IDCEO. The zones guarantee sales tax abatements, and local taxing districts are free to negotiate further tax incentives within the stimulus areas.

With a change in state law, all of Illinois’ 97 enterprise zones had to be replaced instead of being renewed or extended.

“It was a no-brainer to jump on board and apply,” Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said.

Kernc said the village has a strategic plan in place for eco-

nomic development along the Route 113 corridor and the enterprise zone fits with the plan to move forward.

“We are putting everything in place for economic development, to attract development and jobs,” Kernc said.

Norton Ammer said she is encouraged by the director saying in the release that the department intends to evaluate the appropriate time to certify the approved enterprise zones.

“It’s an important step and welcomed news,” Ammer said.

“It’s a powerful economic development tool that will keep us in competition with neighboring states as well as other communities within Illinois.”

The state DCEO is only accepting up to 49 new zones in its first round of applications that were submitted in 2014, according to its website, which means almost half of the existing zones won’t be created in the initial round. The statute keeps the number of enterprise zones at 97, but will award them during a five-year span.

Circus comes to town; firefighters wash elephants If you go

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Residents might see or hear the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District serving the community every day, but there’s a rare opportunity this week to see them wash elephants.

The 79th edition of the Carson & Barnes Circus is performing four shows, at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday. The shows last about two hours and are at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, 8890 N. Route 47.

But before the shows, each day at 3 p.m., the stars of the circus – the “Pampered Pachyderms” – are scheduled to receive a spa treatment from head to toe, said Carson & Barnes Circus owner Kristin Parra. The public is invited to watch Morris firefighters help lather, scrub, exfoliate, moisturize and pedicure the elephants before the show, for free.

West Nile detected in Morris mosquitoes SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department recently collected mosquitoes in Morris that tested positive for West Nile virus. It is the second positive batch in Grundy County this month, as a positive pool of mosquitoes also was collected in Minooka.

The health department anticipates more positive mosquito pools being detected as late summer continues, according to a news release.

Health officials encourage everyone to take steps to avoid West Nile virus by following the Illinois Department of Public Health’s recommended practices: reduce, repel and report.

• Reduce exposure by avoiding the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Eliminate sources of standing water.

The Oakland County medical examiner’s office says Emma Didlake died Sunday in West Bloomfield, northwest of Detroit.

Didlake was a 38-year-old wife and mother of five when

she signed up in 1943 for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

She served about seven months stateside during the war, as a private and driver.

She was born in Alabama.

She moved with her family to Detroit in 1944.

Serb army officer convicted of war crimes dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS LISBON, Portugal – Portuguese authorities say Mile Mrksic, a former Serb army officer sentenced by a U.N. tribunal to 20 years in prison for his part in the 1991 torture and killings of nearly 200 Croatians during the Balkan wars, has died. He was 68.

The Portuguese Prison Services Directorate, which oversaw his incarceration at a high-security prison in Lisbon, said Monday that Mrksic died at a public hospital Aug. 16 from a “progressive and irreversible” disease. It provided no further details.

Mrksic surrendered to the U.N. Yugoslav war crimes tri-

bunal in 2002.

He was convicted in 2009 of withdrawing troops who were guarding Croatian prisoners of war, thereby allowing paramilitary forces to massacre them.

The court found he also failed to prevent torture and cruel treatment in the atrocity.

BUSINESS Morris cancer program earns national kudos MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Morris Hospital cancer program has received a three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons based on results of a voluntary on-site survey.

Morris Hospital has been accredited by the CoC since 1986, according to a news release from the hospital.

Approval by the CoC is given only to facilities that voluntarily have committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance, including meeting or exceeding 34 CoC quality care standards, being evaluated every three years through

a survey process and maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

According to CoC, only 30 percent of all hospitals in the United States have accredited cancer programs, including 79 hospitals in Illinois.

The cancer program at Morris Hospital encompasses diagnostic services, surgical treatment, inpatient care, pathology, cancer registry, support services, community outreach for prevention and early detection, and the Radiation Therapy Center where patients have access to many of the latest cancer treatments.

Dr. Kristopher Oswalt, general surgeon, serves as the chairman of the Morris Hospital Cancer Committee and liaison to the American College of

Surgeons.

Morris’ Korte has eyes on making history

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Among all of last season’s area volleyball players, one stood out with a notable offensive record: Kaylin Korte. Korte ended her junior year only five kills shy of 400.

“Kaylin is a phenomenal volleyball player,” Morris coach Taylor LaFond said.

“She is such a strong player all around, which makes her so great. She has a great vertical jump, a powerful swing and great court sense, which makes her a great player not only offensively but defensively as well. Kaylin has that eye for court, where she can see where the holes are and take advantage of them. That is something that you cannot really teach to a player.

“She also has an amazing passion for the sport. She is so dedicated, determined and committed to perform at a higher level. This girl lives for the sport, and it’s fun to watch her play and see that passion come out.”

As a sophomore, Korte committed to University of Illinois; and in her junior year, she was the Morris Herald-News’ Player of the Year after posting 395 kills, 310 digs and 54 blocks. In both of those years, she was the Northern Illinois Big 12 East Player of the Year.

The 6-foot outside hitter has been a two-time Joliet Herald-News All-Area honoree, a two-time 2014 AVCA/Max Preps Player of the Week for Illinois, and a two-time AVCA Phenom Nominee, among other honors.

How did she get that many accolades before her senior year?

“I am really passionate about the sport,” Korte said.

“I love it. I would play it every day if I could. I am a very competitive person and I hate losing. I take private lessons all of the time and am always striving to be a better player.

“I feel like no one loves volleyball like I do. On the court, I get excited for every point.

I never get down, and I think that helps a lot.”

Korte followed in the footsteps of her sister, Kendall, and started playing club volleyball at UNO when she was 10. Playing libero at age 13 might explain why Korte is a special volleyball player. Last season, she finished with more than 300 kills and 300 digs.

“It all starts with defense and passing,” Korte said. “I take that part very seriously.”

Because she takes every aspect of her game seriously, she stands out. To put her defensive abilities into perspective, her statistics more closely match liberos, not hitters.

Because she is a huge threat in both areas, Korte has the chance to break multiple school records in her senior season. The records include digs, blocks, attack attempts and kills. She also can get to second place in service points.

Korte’s goal is to reach 1,000 career kills this season. That

will break the school record of 727 that Tori Rezin set in 2007.

Korte has 660 career kills Provided she is just as successful this season as last, she will come close to breaking everything. Korte worked hard after the school season to get even better. She started playing for 1st Alliance Volleyball Club on the 17-1 team.

“I loved everyone on my team, and we worked really well together,” Korte said. “It was the best volleyball team that I’ve ever played on. Playing with better players makes you better because you’re trying to be better than that person. I love competition, and it’s competitive at 1st Alliance because you’re with a bunch of

girls that have the same skill level as you.”

Even though reaching that milestone is her personal goal – along with improving her skills, which is always a goal – Korte wants her team to get better as well.

Many opponents be alerted to her early and try to defend her attacks, but that doesn’t worry Korte. Having people trying to make it harder for her to get kills will only help her when she’s playing club or playing for the Fighting Illini.

If there’s a triple-block on her, she’ll work on her shots.

If she’s not able to put the ball away, she’s confident one of her teammates will.

Not many, however, are able to put the ball away the way she does.

“I think my team gives me the ball to get points,” Korte said. “I take that as my role, and I like it. I like the pressure.

It was the first of five yellows over the next nine laps, most of them with dire results for those who caused them.

Only nine of 19 cars finished the entire 47 laps, notable victims being John Nutley, Chris Cooling, David Einhaus and Brett Sontag.

Eddie Hoffman was the last to suffer a dismal fate, blowing up his motor with four laps remaining after spending many laps battling Schüler while with his oil pressure light blinking on and off.

The Schüler-Hoffman battle was a beauty, as Schuler was most tenacious protecting the bottom.

Schüler held off Boris Jurkovic after the restart, prevailing by 0.355 seconds. Andy Jones was third, followed by Josh Nelms, Joe Vinachi and Clubb.

Jake Bradley qualified eighth fastest out of the 12 street stocks, but had no problems racing, winning both his heat and the feature.

In the main event, Bradley took the lead from Alex Clubb on the 15th lap. He went on to win over Zach Sontag, Seth Blommaert, Christy Penrod, Cheryl Hryn and Bill Serviss.

Spencer Leake led all 15 laps of the 4-cylinder feature, but was penalized four positions for breaking out (on speed). The win went to Mike Yuris over Michael Tobuch and Jim Gross.

Pullara also was the hitting star, collecting five hits, including a home run and two doubles. Payton Hutchings scored five runs and Gavin Elrod had two RBIs.

Woman with abortion in past is stung by man’s accusation Dear Abby: Two years ago, I met a gentleman, and he eventually decided we were “soul mates.” I agreed. Over time, we shared our life stories, good and bad. I confided that I’d had an abortion at the age of 18, which has haunted me all my adult life.

Recently he was reciting a chronology of my life. When he got to the abortion, he said, “... and then you became a child murderer.” His comment stunned me. He finds nothing wrong with it. Dear Abby: I’m a 33-year-old man in academia, and it has been two years since my last relationship ended.
