Sponsorships make perfect ‘cents’ MORRIS – United Way of Grundy County raises money through annual campaign presentations conducted at local businesses and companies.

Employees pledge funds to our United Way through payroll deduction. In addition, some companies strengthen their employees’ pledges by matching the funds raised, to make an even greater impact.

Campaign funds raised are awarded to local nonprofit agencies that provide programs and services to Grundy County residents through our annual grant application.

But how do businesses and companies give to United Way if they are not able to logistically conduct a United Way campaign?

I hear this question quite a bit from local business owners who want to be involved in making a difference in the community, but are not able to conduct an annual United Way campaign. In this case, sponsorships would make perfect “cents.”

Sponsoring an event is a great way for a business to support our United Way of

Some businesses may not have grant money to donate annually through holding a United Way campaign, but might have marketing funds available to sponsor an event. Sponsorships help our United Way reduce costs for the event, meanwhile supporting an avenue to raise funds, which in turn helps generate more funding that is granted to the local nonprofits we support annually.

Our United Way of Grundy County is seeking sponsors for our upcoming annual campaign celebration dinner, which will take place Sept.

9. This annual event is our opportunity to celebrate our successes throughout the year, thank our donors, and commend our 29 community partner agencies that provide programs and services to Grundy County residents.

I encourage our local businesses to be a part of this year’s celebration and consider sponsoring this event.

There are several sponsorship levels available. In addition, we are also seeking donations of various items for our auction and raffles.

The theme for this year’s dinner is the fabulous ’50s.

As in the past, we encourage dressing up for the theme, which makes it a fun evening for everyone. Reservations are $50 a person and available by calling our office at 815-9424430.

The money raised by our United Way stays local. Nearly $400,000 is awarded annually to local nonprofit agencies that provide vital programs and services to residents in Grundy County. Our United Way also assists the community in other ways through staff and board involvement in several local community networks. In addition, we lend a hand during other times of need, such as the recent disaster relief efforts. Our United Way serves as a member of the Grundy County COAD

(Community Organizations Active in Disaster) and the Long Term Recovery Committee that was developed after the recent tornado.

The United Way of Grundy County has been providing support in the community since 1946. Grundy County is a great community where people help one another in times of need. I think as a community, everyone in Grundy County works together to not only plant those seeds, but also keeps them nourished so they continue to grow, which is what makes Grundy County a great place to live and work.

MORRIS – Jase Jones weighed only 1 pound when he was transported in a Lifestar helicopter immediately after his birth.

Now 8 years old, Jase stared Saturday morning into the same helicopter as it rested on the lawn of Saratoga Elementary School.

“I rode in this before,” he told the Lifestar crew.

They told Jast they’re glad he’s feeling better, not knowing just how young he was when he flew in the helicopter.

Adults have a difficult time recovering from something severe enough to require helicopter transportation, let alone a 1-pound child.

“We call him ‘the miracle baby,’ ” said Jeff Middleton, Jase’s stepfather.

Now old enough to understand the role first responders and other entities play in the safety of communities, Jase joined other children and their parents in attending Saturday morning’s Children’s Health and Safety Fair. The fair was sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield.

Mud, Sweat and Tears MARSEILLES – Despite the heat index reaching into the lower 90s Sunday, thousands of racers and spectators gathered at The Cliffs Insane Terrain Off-Road Park for the fourth annual Spartan Race.

The course, which pushes racers to their limits, spans between 5 and 8 miles, depending on each racer’s experience level. More than twenty different obstacles, including mud pits, barricades and even a smoldering fire, dotted the course as well.

Race Director Laura Plourde said the race has grown by leaps and bounds since it started in 2011.

Welter named one of 40 Edgar Fellows Youngest county board chairman in Illinois nominated by state Sen. Rezin

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter was one of 40 up-and-coming leaders from Illinois selected as a 2015 Edgar Fellow.

The Edgar Fellows Program is an initiative to inspire bipartisan, inter-regional cooperation in addressing challenges for the future of the state, according to a news release from the Edgar Fellows Program.

“The premise is to get Republicans and Democrats to work together throughout the state,” Welter said after returning from the program held earlier this month. “I learned a lot while I was there.”

The biggest takeaway from the week was there needs to be compromise on issues, he said.

“They taught us that compromising on issues is not a bad thing as long as you are not compromising on your values,” Welter said.

The 40 people chosen to participate were from 140 nominees of men and women who reflect the diversity of Illinois, according to the program.

Participants included elected and appointed officials from all levels of government, as well as individuals who have made their mark in the business world and civic engagement, according to the news release.

Welter said he was nominated by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and was proud to take part in an initiative she also participated in.

Rezin said she nominat-

ed Welter because she knows firsthand the benefits of the program; she was an Edgar Fellow in 2014.

“The network of people you meet is amazing,” Rezin said.

“It’s important to hear what others think. You may or may not agree with their views but the dialogue is important.”

Rezin said Welter’s being the youngest county board chairman in the state was a big part of the reason. She said she wants to encourage bright young people to reach their potential.

“Since we launched this initiative in 2012, we have seen Democrats, Republicans and Independents, from the neighborhoods in Chicago to the rural areas of deep southern Illinois, discover they have much in common even as they develop an appreciation for other viewpoints,” former Gov. Jim Edgar said in the news release.

“I am confident this class of fellows also will form bonds that will serve them and our state well as they climb the leadership ladder.”

The training program was created by Edgar and the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

Welter said the group was in Champaign from Aug. 2 to 6, where he met a lot of people he doesn’t believe he would have had the opportunity to encounter otherwise.

“I was able to meet people who work for the state, speakers, administration and others who I was able to build relationships with,” Welter said.

Julian Bond, civil rights activist, dies at 75

By JESSE J. HOLLAND and JEFF MARTIN The Associated Press ATLANTA – Julian Bond’s life traced the arc of the civil rights movement, from his efforts as a militant young man to start a student protest group, through a long career in politics and his leadership of the NAACP almost four decades later.

Year after year, the calm, telegenic Bond was one of the nation’s most poetic voices for equality, inspiring fellow activists with his words in the 1960s and sharing the movement’s vision with succeeding generations as a speaker and academic. He died Saturday at 75.

Former Ambassador Andrew Young said Bond’s legacy would be as a “lifetime struggler.”

“He started when he was about 17 and he went to 75,” Young said. “And I don’t know a single time when he was not involved in some phase of the civil rights movement.”

Bond died in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, after a brief illness, according to a statement issued Sunday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an advocacy group he founded in 1971 and helped oversee for the rest of his life.

The son of a college president burst into the national consciousness after helping to start the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, where he rubbed shoulders with committee leaders Stokely Carmichael and John Lewis. As the committee grew into one of the movement’s most important groups, the young Bond dropped out of Morehouse College in Atlanta to serve as communications director. He later returned and completed his degree in 1971.

“If this was another movement, they would call him the PR man, because he was the one who wrote the best, who framed the issues the best.

He was called upon time and again to write it, to express it,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, who was Bond’s colleague on the student committee and later wrote a friend-of-the-court brief for the American Civil Liberties Union when Bond’s case was before the high court.

President Barack Obama called Bond “a hero.”

“Justice and equality was the mission that spanned his life,” Obama said in a state-

ment. “Julian Bond helped change this country for the better.”

In 1968, he led a delegation to the Democratic National Convention, where his name was placed in nomination for the vice presidency, but he declined because he was too young. He served in the Georgia House until 1975 and then served six terms in the Georgia Senate until 1986. He also served as president of the law center from its founding until 1979 and was later on its board of directors.

Bond was elected board chairman of the NAACP in 1998 and served for 10 years.

He was known for his intellect and his even keel, even in the most emotional situations, Young said.

“When everybody else was getting worked up, I could find in Julian a cool serious analysis of what was going on,”

Young said.

Bond was often at the forefront of protests against segregation. In 1960, he helped organize a sit-in involving Atlanta college students at the city hall cafeteria.

“We never thought that he really would participate and be arrested because he was always so laid back and cool, but he joined in with us,” recalled Carolyn Long Banks, now 74, who said Bond never sought much recognition in those early years.

Bond was “a thinker as well as a doer. He was a writer as well as a young philosopher,” said Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a journalist who struck up a friendship with Bond in the early 1960s, when she was one of the first two black students to attend the University of Georgia. At the time, Bond was an activist in Atlanta with the newly formed committee.

Gul’s tenure at the ISI and his outspoken backing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and other extremists highlighted the murky loyalties at play years later when the Sept. 11 attacks and their aftermath tested the U.S.-Pakistani alliance.

Gul came to be seen as an increasingly out-of-touch braggart later in life, as he appeared on countless Pakistani TV programs warning of conspiracies and demanding his country militarily confront its nuclear-armed neighbor India.

“The unruly mujahedeen commanders obeyed and respected him like no one else,” Gul’s online autobiography reads. “Later on with the advent of the Taliban’s rise, he was equally admired and respected.”

Gul died late Saturday night at the hill resort of Murree near the capital, Islamabad, his daughter, Uzma Gul, told The Associated Press. She said Gul suffered a brain hemorrhage.

Seneca’s Viken signs with Millikin

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com Recent Seneca High School graduate Brandon Viken will attend Millikin University to play baseball during the 201516 school year.

Viken played shortstop and pitched for the Irish and earned a varsity letter for three years. During his senior season, he earned the Ace Award as a pitcher, throwing 55 innings with an ERA of 3.82.

He struck out 47 batters while walking only 25. Brandon earned co-MVP honors his senior year and was selected to play in the Interstate Eight Conference All-Star Game at the end of the season.

Pro updates: It has been a good week for Morris graduate Josh DeGraaf. Last Sunday, he threw two scoreless innings

for the Class A Vancouver Canadians. He followed that with a 2⁄3-inning stint on Thursday without giving up a run. On Saturday, he maintained three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out six.

In that span, he lowered his ERA from 5.25 to 3.50.

Morris’ Zach Petrick of the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds had starts on Aug. 7 and 12. In 121⁄3 innings, he struck out 12 and walked only one. For the year, he is 7-5 with a 4.31 ERA. At Class AA Birmingham, Minooka grad Tony Bucciferro threw five innings Friday, allowing one earned run and lowering his ERA to 5.10.

Fellow Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz struggled in a start Saturday for the Atlanta Braves against Atizona after getting a win last Saturday against Miami. For the year, Foltynewicz is 4-4 with a 5.61 Seneca graduate Brandon Viken signs to play baseball at Millikin University.

Last week, we looked at New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, two of the unbid minor by responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information. But readers asked two questions. First, what happens after one club - one diamond - one no-trump?

For many pairs, opener’s rebid denies a four-card major. However, even if opener may ignore a four-card major (especially with 4-3-3-3 distribution), most pairs treat responder’s rebids as natural. If he continues with two of a major, it is a reverse and forcing to game. But if you like, you could treat a two-club rebid as NMF. (If you do, then a three-club jump-rebid is a weak signoff.)

In this auction, North-South reached the only game that could be made. Over North’s three diamonds, South had an awkward call. He might have tried four clubs, but that probably would have led to five diamonds, where South would have lost two spades and one club.

Four hearts needed prudent play after West started with three rounds of spades. South carefully discarded his club loser. East’s best defense was a club shift. Declarer won with his ace, drew two rounds of trumps, cashed two top diamonds, and drew the rest of the trumps, discarding dummy’s last diamond. Then South took the last three tricks with his high diamonds.

Tuberculosis is still a killer disease, despite fewer deaths Dear Dr. K: Why does my doctor want to test me for tuberculosis? I thought that was eradicated a long time ago.

Dear Reader: It would be wonderful if tuberculosis (TB) had been eradicated long ago. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

The annual number of new cases in the United States has been dropping over the past 20 years. However, around the world, particularly in developing nations, TB remains a huge problem. More than 1 million people die of TB each year.

TB is an infectious disease, caused by a particular kind of bacteria. The infection usually attacks the lungs, although it can spread to other parts of the body. It is highly contagious.

When TB bacteria enter a person’s lungs for the first time, they often don’t cause any symptoms. At this point, the immune system usually can keep the bacteria from multiplying. But it cannot destroy them completely. The bacteria can remain in the lungs, inactive and unnoticed, for decades.

(People with an inactive infection are not contagious.) However, in the future, the bacteria can suddenly start to multiply and spread – and make the person very sick. This happens when the immune system is weakened, such as by another disease, or by immune-suppressing treatments.

The only way to tell if a person has an inactive infection is with a TB skin test. (It is also called the “Mantoux tuberculin” skin test.) If the test indicates that you do have a silent TB infection, you will need to take a combination of four drugs for about six months. By treating the TB now, when it’s not causing symptoms, you can greatly reduce the risk of ever getting sick.

When I entered medical school, we screened nearly everyone for TB. Since then, the number of people in the U.S. harboring TB bacteria has dropped greatly. Today, we perform screening tests only in people who are at somewhat increased risk. These include people who have been in close contact with others who have an active TB infection, people who have lived in parts of the world where TB is common, health care workers, people who work in prisons or homeless shelters, and people with weakened immune systems.

I get screened for TB every year because I’m a health care worker. When I was very young, a person close to me had active TB. That was before

there were good antibiotics to treat TB. Fortunately, tests showed that the TB bacteria never entered my body when I was young. But I still get retested each year because all health care workers are at risk of being exposed to new TB infections.

In my medical career, I’ve also taken care of quite a number of patients with active TB who were coughing, but fortunately they also did not pass the bacteria to me. I’m glad I get a regular screening, as it protects me against a disease that can be very serious.
