The Canal Corridor Association has scheduled a series of free events from Lemont to LaSalle next weekend to kick off a year-long celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor.

Ana Koval, the association’s CEO, billed the Aug. 2324 Canal Corridor Caravan as “a roadtrip to discover history and explore nature in your backyard.”

“We want to show off some of the many special places along the historic corridor with ‘mini’ tours at nearly 20 stops,” Koval said.

The two-day, eight-town event will showcase sites that helped make the Illinois & Michigan Canal the backbone of the nation’s first National Heritage Corridor, Koval said.

Scheduled stops for Aug. 23 include: • Lemont: H i s t o r i c S t .

James Church and cemetery, tours of the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area or historic downtown Lemont, followed by lunch at The Inn at Smokey Row. • Lockport: Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery (Quilting Exhibit and new River Weaving Sculpture set in the I&M Canal), followed by a tour of Will County Historical Society archives.

Mazon man finishes second at Ill. State Fair in tractor pull

His mother, Tammy, said the first time he pulled all she could think was, “I don’t care, as long as he drives stick straight.”

Stick straight is the name of the game when it comes to tractor pulling. Keeping the tractor in a straight line heading down the track is the biggest challenge a driver faces while steering mostly with the brake pedals.

She said that first pull when he was 17 years old taught him a lot. He chose to not accept the first pull, although in hindsight, he should have. Instead,

he went for a second pull. The tractor blew an oil line and sent oil and smoke billowing from the engine.

“He didn’t panic, even with the oil and smoke going everywhere,” Tammy Halterman said. “He drove it stick straight.”

She said the announcer gave him a lot of credit and said how nice it was that Sam was spending his time at 17 years old on the track instead of on the streets.

He said there aren’t words to explain the rush as he gets when the engine starts and he goes all out to haul his load down the track. He participates in both the Illinois Tractor Pulling Association and the Illinois Pullers Association, to compete more.

Kevin Halterman, his dad, was doing the same thing in the 1970s.

“I did it in the ’70s, and then I seen the light and quit,” he said.

He didn’t really quit, not entirely. He’s just behind the scenes now, as he and his wife, Tammy, help haul the mini rod to the next pull, which is sometimes three or four times a week.

MAZON – Sam Halterman is following in the footsteps of his father, Kevin, on the tractor pull circuit, powering his mini rod pulling tractor all over southern Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.

“I love everything about it,” Halterman said. “Once you are out of high school, there isn’t a lot of things that the family can come watch, but my family comes out to see me pull.”

Halterman is in his fifth year of driving the souped-up mini rod he had custom painted pink to support breast cancer awareness.

“My grandma, Marie Wilkinson, had breast cancer,” he said. “We went through it with her twice and I wanted to do something for her. Since then, my girlfriend’s mom was treated for breast cancer, and she’s doing OK now, but it’s still important.”

He built his “Pulling for the Cure” tractor with a purchased chassis and the help of friends, as well as an engine by his dad’s friend Bill Sontag. He said he knows his grandmother would be proud of the bright pink tractor.

It’s a 379 engine blown on alcohol, as loud as it is strong, pulling about 15,000 pounds down a dirt track.

Halterman placed second this week at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, where he pulled 349.23 feet of a 350-foot pull, with the Illinois Tractor Pulling Association. His second-place finish was only about 10 inches short of first place, which was won by Jay Butson,

Grundy EMA hires new deputy director

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After a threemonth search, Grundy County has a new deputy director for its Emergency Management Agency.

The county hired Tom Kulasik earlier this week to fill the role, which was left vacant when current EMA Director and former Deputy Director Joe Schroeder took over the department.

Longtime EMA Director Jim Lutz retired from the EMA in April after more than 30 years with the county, leading to Schroeder’s promotion to the director role.

Aside from volunteering with the Grundy EMA for the last two years, Kulasik brings 22 years of fire service experience to the position.

“Within that two years [as a volunteer], I attended quite a few sponsored classes as well as

some other seminars all geared toward the emergency management,” Kulasik said.

As the new deputy, Kulasik will oversee operations for the entire agency, which includes managing the EMA’s many volunteer workers and organizing EMA programs.

Schroeder said Kulasik’s experience working alongside the volunteers will prove useful.

“I think he’ll be able to adapt into the volunteer program really well because he used to be a volunteer, so he’s familiar with that,” Schroeder said.

An interview committee consisting of county officials Heidi Miller, Debra Johnson, Ken Iverson and Schroeder interviewed three candidates. Kulasik impressed the committee with his extensive emergency service background and volunteer experience, Schroeder said.

“The candidates were all pretty comparable. From the paper point of view, as far as the

resume, Tom stood out a little more than the others. In the interview process, Tom shined a little bit brighter than all the others,” Schroeder said.

After three months with no deputy, Schroeder said it’s nice to return to normal staffing levels. Kulasik started working this week and is still becoming acquainted with the agency’s day-to-day work.

“Right now, we’re going to start Tom off slow and refresh on some policies and programs,” Schroeder said. “It’s just a matter of getting Tom acquainted with the program and getting him in a position to start fulfilling some of his duties.”

Kulasik said he looks forward to working alongside Schoreder, who held the position previously and can show him the ropes.

“I know the volunteer aspect of it – I know what they do. But I’ve got to get a handle on what Joe’s old job was,” Kulasik said.

MORRIS – The second installment of the 2013 real estate tax is due Sept. 2.

Second installment tax payments must be paid on or before the due date to avoid penalty, according to a news release from the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office.

Payments may be made at the various Grundy County banking institutions listed on the back of the tax bill or directed to the Treasurer’s Office either in person, by mail or the drop box located in the sheriff’s parking lot.

Mailed real estate tax payments for the second installment must be received on or before Sept. 2, otherwise the

payment must include a late fee of 1½ percent a month.

Partial months count as whole months, according to the news release.

The first installment currently has a 3 percent late charge assessment. Local banks, listed on the back of the tax bill, will collect real estate tax payments through Sept. 2.

After that, all payments must be directed to the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office.

Braidwood Area Historical Society opens museum

B R A I D W O O D – B r a i dwood’s early years were shaped by the men and women who came to the town to put down roots, farm, build businesses, and work in the mines or for the railroad.

The original Chicago and Alton Railroad Depot is home to the Braidwood Area Historical Society. The depot looks much the same today as years ago, with original wood floors. A desk displays many original artifacts, including timetables and the hot wax seal used to secure the payroll envelopes.

As the recipient of the annual Bowker-Ostrem-Holderman Endowment, the library purchased new furniture, shelving, a rug, books and other materials for teens in grades six through 12.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County stewards the grant funds of the endowment, which was set up by the Holderman granddaughters to benefit the library and lifelong learning.

The curbs and pavement along Washington Street between Wauponsee and Route 47 are getting a makeover this week and next. The construction has curtailed parking in the area, but Morris engineer Guy Christensen estimates the curb work will be finished by Tuesday and should not affect the Grundy County Farm Bureau anniversary parade next week. MORRIS – The public is invited to a reception Sunday afternoon to welcome the new Morris Area Public Library director Lorene Kennard.

“We are happy with Lorene. She’s come up with a lot of good new ideas,” Board President Jo Dergo said. “It’s been such a long haul.”

The board voted in June to hire Kennard, a Morris native.

Kennard, born and raised in Grundy County, attended Morris Elementary School District 54 until sixth grade, when the family moved to Mazon. She graduated from the former Mazon-Verona-Kinsman High School.

She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in English from Illinois State University, and her master’s degree in library information science from the University of South Carolina.

Kennard worked at White Oak Library District – which covers Crest Hill, Romeoville and Lockport – before accepting the position at Morris.

“I’m really excited to be the director of my hometown library,” she said when she was hired in June.

Goose Lake Prairie photo contest set to accept entries

Photo submissions will be accepted from noon to 3 p.m.

Sunday at Goose Lake Prairie Visitor Center 5010 N. Jugtown Road in Morris. All photos must have exclusively natural subjects.

“They must all be nature shots. They can’t have anything about man in them – no concrete posts, no asphalt, no fences, no electric lines. This is supposed to be a nature show,” said Susie Johnson, contest chairwoman and co-founder.

Johnson said photos within Illinois State Parks are preferred, but submissions depicting natural scenes from anywhere in Illinois are acceptable.

She said she started the event nearly a decade ago to encourage more people to explore Goose Lake Prairie.

Contest sections are always reserved for photos taken at Goose Lake, highlighting the natural area’s flora and fauna.

“We have special categories in black and white, and in color, for photos from the Goose Lake Natural Area itself,” Johnson said.

All ages can submit photos,

and each contestant can enter three photos for each category, Johnson said. There are more than twenty contest categories, between the youth and adult sections.

Three accomplished photographers from the Morris Camera Club will judge the contest.

Local photographer Denise Rogers usually submits her photos each year. But she is excited to judge this year.

“I love seeing the pictures,” she said. “I enter a lot of contests around Illinois, and I like this one a lot because you get to see so much wildlife.”

She encouraged everyone to submit – even those new to taking photos – because the judges will provide feedback for each using a scale and multiple categories.

In years past, Johnson said the contest has drawn about 120 area photographers, ranging from professional to beginner.

The winning photos will be selected Aug. 23 and displayed next weekend at the Goose Lake Prairie visitor’s center.

Spectators can vote on their favorite photo, and the votes will be tallied for the people’s choice award.

“We would love everyone to visit and look at the winning photos,” Johnson said. “We have plants, flowers, wildlife – there’s lots of things to see.”

The Women of Distinction Award is given to women who have made a difference in Grundy County and who are representative role models as leaders in their fields and communities. Nominations are being taken now, and the honorees will be chosen by a selection committee from Grundy County.

A welcome reception in October will provide networking opportunities that will precede lunch and the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will honor women of distinction and provide honorees with an opportunity to share their stories.

Schroeder said drivers should understand that, as they get closer to a school bus, the driver is less able to see them. He asked that students and others wait until a bus comes to a complete stop before approaching.

He also suggested getting students out to their stops early, so they do not have to run for their buses, he said.

Statistically, school buses are the safest transportation option for students. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, students are 50 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they take a bus than either driving themselves or riding with friends.

With the school season arriving, authorities are cautioning motorists to take care around the most popular mode of transportation for budding young minds everywhere – school buses.

Motorists can help keep young people who ride the bus twice a day safe by obeying speed zones in school areas, traffic lights and directions by crossing guards.

“It’s important for motorists to remember that children are walking to and from bus stops. Not just in school zones,” Coal City Police Chief Tom Best said. “It’s important to not only obey speed limits, but also pay attention to their surroundings as school starts back up and kids are walking.”

A common problem bus drivers at Channahon School District 17 encounter is people blowing off stop signs that extend from school buses, said Michael Schroeder, the school district’s chief school business official.

“It’s really intimidating our students who are very, very young,” he said. “And they can step into a stop sign [area]. When a driver passes a stop sign, they put everyone

With a total of 9,007 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 60 pounds of food, including 15 pounds of frozen meat and a variety of other items, including fresh potatoes, carrots, sweet corn, lunch meat, cheese, cakes, coffee cake and bread.

The next mobile food pantry is sponsored by Mazon State Bank, ITW Filtration and Seco Systems and scheduled for Sept.

Authors’ ideas may help ex-senator at RTA State Sen. Kirk Dillard, a Republican from Hinsdale, stepped down from the Senate the other day.

We normally object when a legislator quits in midterm for no good reason.

However, Dillard had a good reason.

He has accepted the chairmanship of the Chicago area’s Regional Transportation Authority, which provides financial oversight for the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra commuter rail and Pace bus service.

Dillard, 59, is best known for his strong showings as a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor during the past two election cycles.

In 2010, Dillard lost the primary by only a few thousand votes to state Sen. Bill Brady, who went on to lose to Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

This past March, Dillard put up a strong fight against businessman Bruce Rauner before falling short in the GOP primary.

Dillard already has ideas for improving mass transportation in Chicagoland.

For example, he wants to establish one “seamless” system of payment for all riders, so that they don’t have to pay to access different parts of the transit system in different ways.

We encourage Dillard to consider ideas from other sources, such as the authors of “Fixing Illinois: Politics and Policy in the Prairie State,” which was published in May. In the chapter titled “Transportation: Maintaining Our Greatest Strength,” Jim Nowlan and Tom Johnson direct their attention toward the Regional Transportation Authority, which Dillard now

heads.

The problem for the RTA, they write, is that a competing agency – the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning – also has responsibility for transportation planning.

So you’ve got two agencies essentially trying to do the same job.

That’s not an unusual situation in Illinois, where multiple layers of government add up to the state having the most local governmental units – 6,963 – of any state in the nation.

Nowlan and Johnson support a proposal by Metropolis Strategies, a civic group, that the RTA merge with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to improve overall planning and decision making.

That’s No. 58 on their list of 98 proposals to change the workings of government in Illinois for the better.

Nowlan and Johnson also believe the Illinois Department of Transportation should create a Freight Division to mitigate rail and trucking congestion.

They call for an end of the practice of diverting transportation-related state revenues to general government purposes.

And they call for a review of how repairs, maintenance and construction of the state’s transportation infrastructure are financed.

“Fixing Illinois” also proposes reforms in the areas of state budgeting, education, human services, health care, economic development, re-engineering government and fighting corruption.

As Dillard takes on his new leadership duties, he would be wise to keep in mind the sound proposals put forth by Nowlan and Johnson.

MINOOKA – The first time Minooka football coach Paul Forsythe saw star tailback Nate Gunn, he thought somebody was playing tricks on him.

Gunn, who was in seventh grade at the time, was just coming off a third-place finish in the 155-pound division of the IESA state tournament and he didn’t exactly look the part of a 13-year-old.

“I saw him, and I didn’t know who he was. I though he was a junior transferring in,” Forsythe told Bob Narang in a Sept. 5, 2013, story in the Chicago Tribune.

Now, Gunn is the unquestionable centerpiece of Forysthe’s offense as the Indians hope to rebound from a disappointing 3-6 season in 2013 and earn their first playoff berth since 2011.

Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 210 pounds, Gunn is one of the most imposing backs in the state. Last season, Gunn powered Minooka to a season-opening victory over Morris with a 151-yard, two touchdown performance.

On the season, he rushed for 860 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Now after an offseason of working to improve his speed and his overall game, Gunn is looking to the Morris game again to start what he hopes to be a big senior season.

“That’s the big game,” Gunn said of the annual matchup with Morris. “After we play Morris, we are already talking about Morris next year. Last year was the first time we beat them in 14 years, and it was exciting.

“We’re pumped and I know the stadium is gonna be pumped. Everyone is gonna be out there and we want to go out there and get after ’em.”

Of course, Gunn’s ultimate goal is to get Minooka back to the playoffs, and he’s looking at the opener as a chance to springboard the Indians’ season.

Optimism abounds as fall season starts

roesterle@shawmedia.com During the course of this week, I have spent a lot of time at early season practices at varying shools and varying sports. One common theme has emerged, as it usually does at the start of a season.

Enthusiasm.

It flows from players and coaches. Not only are they excited to be back in the swing of things, but they are excited about the prospects of the season ahead. And, for the football teams around here, that enthusiasm seems to be justified at first glance.

Seneca is coming off a 9-3 record and its first playoff season in more than a decade and has increased numbers in the program. Both are reasons for enthusiasm, and it would be nice to see the Irish come back to their former prominence on the gridiron.

Coal City’s playoff machine just keeps rolling. They lost in the first round last year to finish, 5-5, but it marked the 24th time in the past 27 years that the Coalers were in the postseason. That’s a remarkable string of success, especially for a small public school, and there is no reason to believe it won’t continue.

In Minooka, coach Paul Forsythe enters his third year, so his system is starting to take hold. The Indians were 3-6 last season, but the Southwest Prairie Conference is so balanced that anything can happen on any given week. A few breaks this year that they didn’t get last year, and don’t be surprised to see the Indians in the playoffs. Of course, playing Morris and Providence Catholic the first two weeks before heading into conference play isn’t doing them any favors. But, with a running back like Nathan

As far as Morris, the Redskins are coming off a very un-Redskins-like 3-6 season. However, the optimism and enthusiasm for the season is high in camp, thanks mainly to 15 starters returning from that team. Coach Alan Thorson has liked what he has seen from the work turned in over the summer, particularly on the offensive line, and he has quarterback Griffin Sobol and running back Jake Walker returning as two big offensive weapons. In nine games last season, Walker ran for more than 1,000 yards and should be a key cog in the offense again this season.

As expected, Kevin Hayes, the Blackhawks’ first-round draft pick in 2010, did not sign with the team Friday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Hawks will receive the 54th pick in the 2015 NHL Draft as compensation.

“We offered Kevin what we believed was a generous and fair contract,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a release. “Unfortunately, he felt it was in his best interests to become a free agent.

Just a few quick look-ins on how our local professional pitchers are doing.

Mike Foltynewicz of Minooka is up with the Houston Astros. His fastball is bigtime, as a couple of them hit 100 MPH in his most recent outing Thursday night against the Red Sox. However, his

location seems to need a little work as he has allowed 13 hits in seven innings. However, he has only walked one, though, and has six strikeouts and sports a 7.71 ERA. Houston seems to be committed to giving him big-league innings, though. There’s a lot of season left, especially for a young talent, such as Foltynewicz, to make a mark.

In Triple-A, Morris’ Zach Petrick continues to be a solid performer for the Memphis Redbirds in the Cardinals’ organization. He is 6-5 with a 4.42 ERA. In 106 innings, he has struck out 69 and walked 32.

Minooka grad Tony Bucciferro recently made the jump from Single-A to Double-A in the White Sox organization.

With the Birmingham Barons, he is 1-2 with a 5.71 ERA. In 171⁄3 innings, he has struck out seven and walked four while allowing 26 hits.

Hayes, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound power forward, had 27 goals and 38 assists as a senior at Boston College this past season, playing on the best line in college hockey with Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold, both of whom were signed by the Calgary Flames. Neither he nor his agent, Bob Murray, have explicitly said why Hayes didn’t want to sign with the Hawks, but there are several possible reasons.

The most obvious is the

simple fact that Hayes is a right winger, and with Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Ben Smith and Kris Versteeg, among others, in his way, there’s no clear path to the NHL for Hayes, who, at 22 years old, is considered NHL ready.

Another possibility is he wants to follow his linemates Gaudreau and Arnold to Calgary, or his brother Jimmy to Florida. There has been speculation that Hayes is angry with the Hawks for the way they handled Jimmy Hayes before dealing him to Florida, but a source said that’s not an issue.

Moderator change on ‘Meet the Press’

The Washington Post People can finally stop speculating about “Meet the Press.” NBC News President Deborah Turness announced that David Gregory, who has been hosting for almost six years, will leave the network and that Chuck Todd will replace him as moderator beginning Sept. 7. Andrea Mitchell will serve as moderator of “Meet the Press” this weekend.

“I leave NBC as I came — humbled and grateful. I love journalism and serving as moderator of MTP was the highest honor there is,” Gregory Tweeted.

Gregory took over in December 2008, after Tim Russert’s death in June of that year, and has presided over a significant drop in ratings.

For weeks, there were rumors that NBC would dump Gregory, and this week, Politico’s Mike Allen reported that Todd would be the “likely successor.”

CNN’s Brian Stelter first reported Thursday that Todd would take over at “Meet the Press.”

For NBC, the hope is to return the program to at least a semblance of its standing in Russert’s glory days, when the show consistently clocked in atop the Sunday-talk show ratings.

Fans of Todd say that’s what NBC will be getting from the new host.

“They share the same boyish enthusiasm for politics and Washington and the process for it all,” says Amy Walter, who replaced Todd when he left the Hotline (she says that Russert handpicked Todd to go over to NBC). “He’s critical without being cynical. He doesn’t give politicians a pass but isn’t disdainful of them.”

It’s the go-to compliment for Todd. He’s from politics the way Russert was (both worked for politicians before becoming journalists).

NBC officials were even throwing around the term “the David Gregory Problem,” and when Politico reported on his imminent departure, Dylan Byers didn’t beat around the bush: “He was widely disliked within the organization and his ambition and vanity rubbed important colleagues at NBC the wrong way.”

In an email to NBC News staff, Turness said Todd will continue in his role as NBC News’ political director and will “hand over his roles” as chief White House correspondent and anchor of MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.”

Todd came to Washington from Miami as an undergraduate at George Washington University and landed a job in 1992 at National Journal’s Hotline.

He worked for the morning tip sheet until 2007. For six of those years he was the editor in chief.

“He was a force of nature from day one,” says Craig Crawford, who was the Hotline editor when Todd started. “He was so deep

into politics that he was as enthusiastic about city council elections as presidential campaigns. He had to compromise just to keep the Hotline from being 300 pages every day.”

This is why Todd is known around town as a “political junkie” and as someone who loves the game. He certainly caught the eye of David Bradley, the millionaire owner of the Atlantic, the parent company of the Hotline.

Bradley, a “self-abashed Chuck fan,” emailed in this story to prove it: “If you use this, please note that this is not my everyday schedule,” he writes. “My wife and I were headed off for a small dinner honoring the King of Jordan. I dropped in on Chuck to ask him to talk me through the smartest thinking on the presidential election — of 2004. I took a few notes, repeated them at dinner, and proved to be more brilliant than, in fact, I am.”

Wonks are in these days.

When it comes to politics, Todd is the geek-in-chief.

“There is no one with a bigger passion for politics than Chuck,” Turness said in her email. “His unique ability to deliver that pas-

sion with razor sharp analysis and infectious enthusiasm makes him the perfect next generation moderator of this beloved broadcast.”

There is no doubt that the show needed some kind of a change. “Meet the Press” spent decades at No. 1, but the leader is now CBS’s “Face the Nation” (with a weekly average viewership of 3.35 million during the first three months of 2014 — 5 percent more than ABC’s “This Week” and 8 percent more than “Meet the Press.”) This past weekend, “Meet the Press” attracted 2.1 million viewers vs. about 2.9 million for “Face the Nation” and approximately 2.6 million for “This Week.”

As Todd’s former boss Crawford says, knowing the material is only half the reason that Todd will be a good fit at “Meet the Press.”

“The other half is having an engaging personality,” Crawford says. “He loves people and is chattier than Gregory. He’ll be able to break down barriers and get people off of their talking points.”

So it seems that each time somebody compares Todd to the popular Russert, each time somebody says that Todd is truly passionate about politics, or that he lives for the game, the implication is that Gregory does not. Not everyone thinks that’s fair.

“I don’t know why we have to compliment Todd at Gregory’s expense,” political strategist Hilary Rosen said in an interview. “David’s great, too.”

For weeks, the rumor mills were spinning at top speed. Competitors on Fox News even started feeling bad for Gregory: “NBC is throwing David Gregory under the bus and it’s drip drip drip,” Greta Van Susteren wrote. “It is so slow, so painful and wicked.”

As of Thursday afternoon, it no longer felt so slow. By Sunday, “Meet the Press” will have a new host.

Dear Abby: I have been single for a couple of years. I have always been levelheaded when it comes to romance, but I’m finding myself unable to control my feelings about the new man I’m seeing.

“Brent” is smart, intelligent, sweet and loving. We have been dating for a little over a week and he has already given me keys to his place. (I have a roommate, or I would have given him my keys, too!)

I love him. He loves me. I am so happy. I feel calm and confident about our progress.

This is a first for me. I know it’s unusually fast, but my parents got married six weeks after they met, and they’re still happy together after 37 years.

Keep things fun, safe when it comes to youth sports Dear Doctor K: I have a fourth-grader and a middle-schooler. Both enjoy playing sports. Is there anything I can do to reduce their risk of sports injuries?

Dear Reader: Injuries that result from youth sports are becoming more common -- and the injuries aren’t just the expected bumps and bruises that come with being active, either.

Doctors are seeing more serious injuries, some of which can lead to lifelong disability.

At the same time, regular exercise is really important to a child’s health. It also sets patterns for exercise when kids become adults, and that’s important to their health later in life.

Finally, playing sports teaches many lessons about friendship, teamwork and healthy competition.

So what can you do to keep your kids healthy and safe?

• Make sure they learn and use proper techniques for their sport. Many coaches are parents who are well-meaning, but have

When choosing leagues and coaches for your kids, ask the coaches about their experience and techniques.

• Don’t overdo practice. We all know that to excel at something takes practice. But the more hours young bodies spend in practice, the higher the risk of injury. I can’t say how much is too much; it depends on many things. For example, an hour of practice once or twice a week might be fine for a young child.

For a high school student, two hours every day after school.

It also depends on what is happening during practice. Pay attention to your child’s energy level, interest and any physical complaints.

• Think twice about contact sports. Over the past five years, there have been an increasing

number of reports about permanent brain damage from repeated head injuries. The evidence of permanent brain damage is strongest for head injuries that produce concussions.

There isn’t a lot of evidence yet that contact sports are dangerous for children. As a result, my pediatric colleagues are divided about what to tell parents.

I would follow the news carefully on this topic.

• Vary the sports and activities. Young children often end up playing just one or two sports all year round. This can lead to stress injuries.

Finally, don’t forget to keep things fun. Sometimes, sitting on the sidelines of a youth competition, you’d think that every child was headed for professional sports. Encourage your child to work hard and do his or her best.

Abuse takes many forms Dr. Wallace: I have a friend who has told me that she is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. She is 19 and he is 25. She says that she loves this guy and just can’t seem to break up with him. I asked her if he is hitting her and she said no. I’ve tried to pry out of her what the abuse might be, but all she says is that she doesn’t want to talk about it now, but later she will tell me everything.

If it’s not physical abuse, is she being abused sexually? What should I do to help her?

– Nameless, Omaha, Nebraska Dear Nameless: “Relationship abuse” is a pattern of unacceptable, and sometimes violent, behavior someone uses against a girlfriend or boyfriend. It can take many forms, including threats, insults, emotional abuse, isolation from family and friends, name calling and controlling what someone wears or who they can socialize with. It can also include sexual abuse. In most cases of relationship abuse, the victims are female, and the abusers are male.

To help your friend, let her know that you will always be available to offer assistance any time she needs to call on you. It is important for her to know that you will always be there for her.

Whenever you have the opportunity, ask questions about her relationship with this guy and encourage her to do her best to leave him. Also have her contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE).

They will direct her to a program or support group in her community.

Dr. Wallace: You wrote: “Running away

I don’t like your word “never.” What about the teen who is being abused both physically and sexually by a stepfather?

That’s what was happening to my best friend, and after discussing it with me, we both agreed the best thing she could do was to run away (with her boyfriend) and start a new life in another location.

Dear Nameless: Your friend was in a dangerous situation and clearly needed to leave her home as soon as possible, but I fear she may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Her best bet would have been to find shelter with a friend or relative -- and to notify the proper authorities. Her stepfather was engaging in criminal behavior and should have faced the consequences.

I know that some teens face unbearable situations at home and have no option but to leave. But they shouldn’t try to face the world on their own. It can be a cold, cruel place for a runaway.

I truly hope your friend and her boyfriend are safe. But never would I encourage a teen to run away from home. The teen has safer options.

In this deal, what should East do? South is in four hearts and West leads the club jack.

Over West’s one-diamond opening, North had a clear-cut takeout double. Yes, he would have preferred to hold better clubs, but he was 4-4 in the majors. South’s two-heart jump advance showed some 9-11 points. Although the diamond queen looked useless, the known eight- or nine-card heart fit was good compensation. Then both North and South were tempted by the vulnerable game bonus.

When West leads the club jack, it denies the queen (we lead the top of touching honors) and the ace (we do not underlead an ace at trick one against a suit contract). So East knows that South holds the club ace and queen. As a consequence, there is no point in third hand high.

South is bound to get two club tricks, but why let him capture two honors instead of one?

If East plays an encouraging club eight, West, when in with the heart ace, can lead another club. Then the defenders will take one trick in each suit for down one.

But if East wastes the club king at trick one, when West is next on lead, he cannot play a club without giving South three tricks in the suit. And if West leads another suit, declarer can benefit from the 3-3 spade break to take three spades, four hearts, one diamond and two clubs.
