RONALD T. MOIR Ronald T. Moir, age 48, of Coal City, IL, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Morris Hospital in Morris, IL. Ron was currently the Principal at Jefferson Elementary School in Ottawa, IL, he previously was employed at Shepherd Junior High, also in Ottawa. He was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1983, he received his first Bachelor’s Degree from College of St. Francis, second Bachelor’s Degree from Illinois State University, and his Master’s Degree from Governors State.

He was a member of the Coal City Area Club and the CECO Recreation Club, both in Coal City, the Braidwood Recreation Club, where he was also on the Fishing Council, Pheasants Forever, and the CART Team. He enjoyed helping with his son’s baseball teams and also previously umpired many high school football, baseball, and basketball games. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Blackhawks fan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Born: May 5, 1921; Coal Creek, NE Died: Aug. 12, 2014; in Morris, IL Warren Ritz, 93, of Diamond, IL passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at The Morris Hospital.

He was born on May 5, 1921, in the settlement Coal Creek, Nebraska to the late George and Ella (nee Plambeck) Ritz. Warren was a WWII veteran and a retired local 179 Teamster.

He is survived by, four children, Wade (Kathleen) Ritz of Pea Ridge AR, Cindy (John Dennis) Pavlis of Coal City, Debbie (Robert) Sayers of Jackson MO, and Jody (Linda) Ritz of Coal City; a daughter in law, Becky Ritz of Tampa Florida; five grandchildren, Christine (Mike) Mullin, Duane (Amy) Ritz, Janine (Bruce) Firth, Bree Sayers, Rob Sayers, and Hayley Ritz; five great grandchildren, Morgan, Maddy Alison, Shelby, and Brandon; two great-great grandchildren: Thomas and Aubriana, and numerous nieces nephews and cousins.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, a son Tim Ritz, a grandson Darren Pavlis, and twelve siblings.

Cremation rites will be accorded and private family services will be held with inurnment in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Lawyer gets probation for punching person in Braidwood

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A lawyer was sentenced Thursday to a year’s probation for punching a stranger in a Braidwood bar two years ago.

Judge Edward Burmila also ordered Kenneth Grnacek not to use alcohol while on probation and perform 75 hours of community service to benefit a shelter for bat-

tered women.

Grnacek, 70, was found guilty of aggravated battery during a bench trial in April for giving Caryn Miller a bloody lip on Dec. 24, 2012, inside the Korner Keg, 285 E. Main St. Grnacek was drinking in the bar and ordered a pizza from bartender Kiley Murphy, which he complained took too long to arrive.

Grnacek faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison, but since he had no prior criminal record, it was expected he would receive the recommended sentence of

probation. He declined comment on the sentence.

Grnacek, who is known around the Will County Courthouse as “The Hawk,” has practiced law for 40 years.

Grnacek’s conviction will be reported to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. He could face professional sanctions from the ARDC, but will not be automatically censured or disbarred.

Members participated in the opening segment of the afternoon and were in each classroom as freshmen went from class to class, following their new schedule.

Student council president Leah Lines told them not to

worry too much. If any of them had any questions, they could approach any student council members who were there Thursday. They’d also be available during regular school hours to help.

“I’d tell them ‘don’t be nervous, don’t freak out’,” student council member Taylor

Cole said. “High school is fun.

You just have to enjoy it.”

Hussey told the group he’d be their biggest cheerleader and demonstrated by leading them all in a cheer before they started their schedules.

MORRIS – Morris Community High School freshmen are preparing to start their lives as Morris Redskins.

No longer will they be Braves, Hawks, Foxes, Knights or Angels. Instead, they are the Morris High School Class of 2018.

That was the message Principal Kelly Hussey shared with them at freshman orientation Thursday afternoon.

“High school is the steppingstone to their future,” Hussey said before the assembly started. “Their freshman year is the most important year. We don’t judge the individual based on their peers.

We tell them to look into the mirror and be the best you you can be.”

Trevor Tanke and Joey Lyle, who are entering the school after graduating from Saratoga last spring, are both excited about playing Redskins football, but they both have anxiety about starting their high school career.

“I’m excited for the experience,” Lyle said. “Not so much for the school work, but I passed elementary school so I should be OK.” Tanke said he’s worried about how friendships will be affected. But he’s also excited about making new ones.

Arlene Valerio and Alexis Munoz, both coming to the high school from Shabbona Middle School, said the most exciting part of high school is meeting new people and making new friends. That is the scary part, too.

“Having to meet new people and start all over is going to be hard,” Valerio said.

Jazmynn Geist from Saratoga is looking forward to extracurricular activities such as marching band and attending dances.

Like many young people, she also has fears about bullying.

“I’m worried about bullying by the upperclassmen, or not fitting in,” Geist said.

Highway department to patch roads, save on energy costs

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Highway Department crews will patch and paint a number of Grundy County roads in upcoming weeks.

The county approved bids during Tuesday’s Grundy County Board meeting to complete the two projects. The patching project will only affect a handful of county roads, including sections of Braceville, Carbon Hill and Ridge roads.

“We’ve got some bad areas, so we’re going to take that out and put asphalt in,” Grundy County engineer Craig Cassem said Thursday.

The county agreed to

pay AC Pavement Stripping $71,854 to complete the paint striping, and pay D Construction $97,355 to complete the patchwork. All money will come from the highway department fund.

Cassem said the county tries to repaint road stripes every three to four years.

“They fade after awhile so we’re re-striping them,” he said. “We’re not doing all of them, just some of the ones that need it.”

Also approved Tuesday by the full board was an agreement with Constellation NewEnergy that will save the highway department on its electricity bills.

On average, the department pays about $600 a month to keep the county’s more than 40

The agreement with Constellation will not alter the energy supply for the lights, but it will eliminate many of the fees charged by ComEd, which will provide some savings, Grundy County Administrator Heidi Miller said.

With the new agreement,

ComEd will keep its role as the pole service, meaning it will replace and maintain the county street lights.

“It’s going to save a little bit of money. I mean, it’s not tons of money, but it’s something,” Cassem said.

He estimated the county would save about $30 a month on electricity bills through Constellation’s program, but those savings could fluctuate between contracts, Cassem said.

The highway department’s agreement is in-line with the rest of the county.

Last month, the board approved a different agreement with Constellation to supply energy for all Grundy County facilities.

Miller pursued the agreement with Constellation because the county would see savings in the thousands.

“It’s a substantial savings from what we were paying,” she said.

Miller said it’s been about 10 years since the county entered into a competitive electricity supply contract like the one with Constellation and has subsequently missed out on some electricity bill savings.

“Since deregulation, there’s a lot of energy supply companies out there,” Miller said.

With the added suppliers, the county secured a much more competitive energy price.

Superintendent Pat Halloran said there are few changes expected this year.

“Other than starting five minutes earlier and getting out five minutes earlier, everything is staying pretty much the same,” Halloran said.

He said brief adjustments were made to the day to help with shared transportation

with Saratoga and District 54.

“Nothing jumps out as being different or new this year,” Halloran said. “That in itself is exciting.”

The district has kept student fees the same as last year. Book fees are $150. The IHSA fee is $50 a sport or activity, with a maximum of $100 a student.

An invoice with any remaining class fees will go home Sept. 5. Payment can be made online with E-Pay or by submitting payment to the main office.

Committee asked to revisit salary freezes

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Lana Phillips may be the Grundy County clerk and recorder, but she addressed the Personnel Committee as a member of the public Thursday.

During public comment, Phillips asked the committee to reconsider the elected official salary freezes recommended by the committee in April and approved by the full County Board in May. Those freezes applied to the clerk and recorder’s position, the treasurer’s position and sheriff’s position, all of which are up for election this November.

Phillips will be retiring from her post this year and is not running for re-election this fall.

“This does not involve me. I am not on the ballot, but I ask you to revisit this,” Phillips told the committee.

Her plea was prompted by recent public comments made by board member Chris Balkema and board Chairman Ron Severson indicating the county’s finances are not as dire as once predicted.

Earlier in the year, county officials feared losing $1.8 million in sales tax revenue would strain the budget, but they are now finding other revenue sources are mitigating the budget hole.

“We are realizing that we’re going to walk out of this fiscal year with reserves higher than what we thought two or three months ago,” Balkema said during Tuesday’s County Board meeting.

In a Tax Committee meeting held earlier this month, Severson mentioned instituting a potential property tax rebate program to help whittle down some of the county’s millions in cash reserves.

With that in mind, Phillips asked the committee to reconsider raising the salaries to levels discussed in previous meetings.

The total combined raises would cost the county $12,584 over four years.

“It is my hope that you would revisit this. Vacate that resolution that you adopted in May. We are not talking about excessive amounts of money,” Phillips said.

The salary raises would put the clerk and treasurer at $78,613 per year.

This would put them level with the coroner and circuit clerk, whose salaries were both raised to that level two years ago.

“I ask you, I implore you, to visit it again. It is unfair that two elected officials will receive more than the others for the next two years,” she said.

The committee did not respond to Phillips comments.

Personnel members were scheduled to discuss pay raises for all other nonunion county employees Thursday, but the committee tabled the discussion for fear of interfering with ongoing negotiations.

“We need to wait, maybe, until they have completed their conversations and negotiations,” Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said.

“If we offer any changes here, it could give leverage,” she continued.

Courtney, whose career goal is to be an international missionary doctor, realized when researching colleges and finding none appealing to her that God was calling her to a different educational timeline.

While researching different gap year ideas, Courtney found The World Race. Although she did receive the blessing and support of both her parents – Chris Peterson of Minooka and Eric Peterson of Shorewood – Courtney said she would participate even if she did not have it.

However, to prove her sincerity and dedication, Courtney said she assembled a presentation for her father, outlining the trip’s details and her reasons for pursuing it.

He responded by contributing some of her college fund and admiring the extremely driven young woman she has grown to be, he said.

“She is already doing everything she can to accomplish her goals at 18,” Eric said. “As a woman, she’ll be able to accomplish anything she wants in life.”

If Courtney Peterson, 18, of Minooka doesn’t raise that amount by Monday, she won’t be able to spend nine months ministering to the people in the Philippines, Swaziland and Nicaragua.

It’s part of The World Race, an extended mission trip to 11 countries in 11 months to serve the poor, according to www. theworldrace.org. Courtney has signed up for the September 2014 Gap Year program for young adults age 18 to 22, a modified program with fewer countries and less time away.

She plans to blog about her experiences until she returns in May 2015.

Since the beginning of 2014, Courtney has raised $12,487, a combination of her own funds and money people have donated to her. In addition to the $2,150, Courtney also needs another $1,000 – for airfare as well as immunizations, since her health insurance won’t cover them, she said.

Although Courtney is racing against time, she is not worried or anxious.

“If the Lord is calling me to do something, he will provide for it – on his time, not my time,” Courtney said.

Courtney’s love for mission work goes back to childhood.

She always had wanted to go to Africa, she said, just to see for herself that the TV commercials showing children living in extreme poverty were really true.

But when Courtney finally did experience mission trips – through Joliet Catholic Academy, when Courtney was a student – both were on native soil. For the first, Courtney worked at an Ohio farm that ministered to newly released juvenile offenders. The second was in Indiana, at a place that helped women affected by do-

But Courtney still wanted to serve the African poor, so she messaged a former JCA student through Facebook whom Courtney knew had participated in one such mission trip.

That student, Courtney said, recommended the organization that has arranged her trip.

Courtney raised the $5,000 required for that mission trip through requesting donations from family and friends. She attended a training camp in Florida the last week of June 2013 and then spent a month in Uganda before returning for a debriefing session and then home, she said.

Unlike many teens who generally attend such a trip with their school or church youth group, Courtney went without knowing anyone on her team.

She, along with four leaders and the other two dozen teens, worked at building a septic tank in a village in Uganda.

While there, they slept in tents inside a three-wall structure, took bucket showers and washed their clothes in buckets, too, and ate a combination of packaged food they brought along with local chickens and eggs.

The proliferation of cellphones in that village amazed Courtney – everyone they encountered had one, she said.

Despite strict safety precautions, the team did battle a gastrointestinal bug, she said.

“Our water filter broke and we didn’t realize it, so we were all drinking dirty water,” Courtney said. “Being sick with a squatty potty is not

Mazon firefighters invite community to first-ever spaghetti dinner, raffle

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – The Mazon Fire Department is looking to the communities it serves to help raise money for new equipment and training.

The department will host its first-ever spaghetti dinner and raffle on Saturday at the Mazon American Legion.

“We’ve done pancake dinners in the past, but the turnout was getting lower each year, so we decided to host a spaghetti dinner as our new fundraiser,” firefighter and first responder Robbie Clavey said. “We want to make this a big fundraiser that people remember.”

Clavey, the event coordinator, said he remembers the fire department hosting a dance at the park when he was a child.

The whole town turned out because it was something to do all day.

Being on the Village Board as well as the fire department, Clavey hopes to some day combine the fundraiser with the village and turn it into a Mazon fun day.

“We went door-to-door and asked the community personally to come out and support us,” Assistant Chief Thomas Sereno Jr. said. “The funds are

important so we can replace equipment and further our training.”

The Mazon Fire Department is a volunteer organization, so no one gets paid for their service. It has 15 volunteer firefighters and will offer information about joining the department at the event to anyone interested.

The department offers aid to surrounding communities as they are available. The hope is people will come from everywhere to help support the department and its volunteer staff.

The event will have a DJ and a bounce house, face-painting, carnival games and a kiddie water fight.

There also will be raffle items, auction items and a 50/50 drawing.

“This is a family friendly event,” Clavey said. “The more kids, the merrier.”

IDOT reopens portions of I-55 over Des Plaines River JOLIET – The northbound lanes of Interstate 55 over the Des Plaines River have reopened, state transportation officials announced Thursday.

Southbound lanes between Arsenal Road and Bluff Road are set to reopen Friday or Saturday morning, weather permitting, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Intermittent nighttime lane closures should continue to complete some work on and near the bridges.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Wednesday he hopes the reopening of lanes will alleviate some of the semitrailer traffic congestion along local roads.

He said he hopes truckers will now make use of the I-55/ Arsenal Road interchange, completed two years ago to handle the truck traffic around CenterPoint Properties’ two trucking intermodals in Joliet and Elwood.

“Ever since the Arsenal Road interchange came in, there’s always been some type

of construction going on that kind of diverted some traffic from utilizing that,” Walsh Jr. said. “Once this corridor opens up and truckers realize the ease of getting in and out of the industrial parks by way of I-55, I think you’ll see some of the traffic ease up a bit on our other routes.”

I-55 over the Des Plaines River bridge has been plagued with major traffic congestion during the past two construction seasons, but last month’s fatal chain-reaction crash brought the traffic issue back to the forefront.

Five people, including two from the area, died as a result of a July 21 collision involving a semitrailer in the I-55 construction zone. A second collision that same day resulted in the death of a sixth person.

Last year, sudden backups resulted in 172 crashes and two fatalities between July and November.

The construction project cost about $7.65 million. It included repairs to the twin 58-year-old truss bridges’ pier, abutment and structural steel, along with new decks and a paint job.

Morris soccer hopes to extend regional streak Redskins have won three straight titles

If you picked boys soccer, you are right.

The Redskins have won three straight regional titles under coach David Valdivia, and they are hungry for their fourth as the 2014 season officially began Wednesday.

Morris went 14-5-5 last season, setting a school record for wins in a season. The plan is to increse that this year, and to add a Nothern Illinois Big 12 Conference title to the mix as well. As the program progresses and continues to set school records, there is one record that won’t be taken away. Valdivia was on the first Morris varsity soccer team and scored the first goal in program history.

“One of our goals, obviously, is to win that fourth straight regional,” Valdivia said. “But, we also want to take that next step in the sectional, too. We know that’s going to be tough, because Peoria Notre Dame always seems to be in the sectional, and they are a powerhouse.

But, we hung right in with them for most of the game last year.

It was 2-1 until late when they scored and made it look worse at 3-1 than it was.

“One thing we really want to do is win the conference.

We have had Kaneland and DeKalb blocking us from that the last few years, but I know that DeKalb lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team, so that will help. We have seven players that saw a lot of time, not all of them started, but they all saw a lot of time, coming back, so that’s a good start for us.”

One player who will be a key for the Redskins is Ricardo Del Toro, who amassed 32 goals in the Redskins’ 24 games last season.

“Ricardo was the MVP of our team and he was all-conference as well,” Valdivia said. “He had just an amazing year. One good thing about our team is that there is no jealousy over who scores goals. It’s like everyone has their job, and one of Ricardo’s main jobs is to get the ball in the net. When he does his job, it makes everyone happy.”

But Morris promises to be more than a one-man show on offense, as Valdivia is counting on returning players Nick Borgstrom and Luke Rodriguez, among others, to increase their offensive production. Freshman Connor Shaw has also been impressive in summer camps, according to Valdivia, and may see time up with the varsity club.

Defensively, the Redskins will count on Tyler Pletsch and Kyle Schroeder to keep the ball away from the net, but if it does get close, Valdivia is confident that keeper Matt Borgstrom will be up to any challenge.

Kyle are real strong defenders,” Valdivia said. “They play very good structural defense and they both know how to pass out to the midfielders very well. If the ball isn’t getting close to the goal, that’s the easiest way to keep it out.”

That could only mean one thing. I looked further under the trailer and sure enough.

The leaf spring had snapped.

That would explain the clanging sound.

Once again, my nerves jumped. We could have had a major blow out and didn’t. I showed what I had found to the rest of the family. It was at the at point that Cody piped up, “I thought when I turned around to look at the trailer, the wheel was rubbing.” Great. Just great. Maybe next time he will actually tell me.

That was two scary trailer mishaps in just a few months. I hope that things do not always happen in threes. What did I learn? Never take trailer maintenance for granted. Check, check, and double check.

Seneca hopes to enjoy home cooking on football schedule

Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Dwight and Seneca have played annually in football for many years, yet their opening-week game in 2014 will offer some unique aspects from the perspective of both teams.

The game will be Dwight’s first as a Sangamon Valley Conference member, although it is a nonconference game.

For Seneca, it will be the first regular-season game against a non-Interstate Eight Conference opponent since 2001, even if Dwight was an I-8 school through the 2013-14 school year.

Seneca’s schedule will be a bit different from what it has been for the past few years in some other ways. Its Week 2 opponent, Nokomis, is a newcomer to the Fighting Irish schedule. Nokomis has made 12 playoff appearances since 1995 – six in Class 1A, five in 2A and one in 3A. The Sept. 6

“Dwight is a [nonconference opponent] that we obviously know, and then we get to see a team we do not know for what should be a real good game,” Seneca coach Ted O’Boyle said. “There’s no real tie [between Nokomis and Seneca]. They happened to be open, we happened to be open

and it should be a good test both ways.”

Seneca has faced its Week 4 opponent, Herscher, in each of the past two seasons, but this year’s meeting is different because it is a conference game, as the Tigers are dropping down to the I-8’s Small Division after several years in the Large.

In Weeks 8 and 9, the Irish will play I-8 crossover games

against opponents in Plano and Coal City that they have not faced since 2011.

“We haven’t played Coal City since I’ve been here,” said O’Boyle, who is in his third season at Seneca. “From what I’ve heard, that’s always a big rivalry game. With that being a Week 9 game and it being [at Coal City], there could be some major playoff implications for both teams.”

To Irish quarterback Zach Russell, a game against an opponent with whom the Irish are very familiar stands out above everything else on the schedule. Wilmington will bring what is currently a 32game winning streak in the I-8 Small and a 12-game winning streak against the Irish to Seneca on Oct. 10.

Not only did Wilmington hand the Irish their only conference loss in 2013, Russell said that his teams also have lost every time they have faced opponents from Wilmington going back to his youth foot-

ball days with the Seneca Pride.

“It would be about the best feeling you could have,” Russell said of beating the Wildcats, “especially to have it happen my senior year.”

Center Colin Griffin said the 2013 game between the Irish and Wilmington only furthered their desire to dethrone the longtime conference champion.

“The atmosphere when we lost, 14-6, in Game 5 last year was incredible,” Griffin said.

“There were hundreds and hundreds of fans lined up all around [the stadium]. It was an adrenaline rush all the way through.”

One advantage the Irish will have this season against Wilmington that they lacked in 2013 is that they will face the Wildcats at home. It is an advantage they will enjoy often. They are scheduled for six home games, including two to begin the season and three straight in Weeks 6 through 8.

You always hear people talking about how things happen in threes. If someone you know breaks an arm, someone else might get pneumonia, and then a third person might need surgery. I don’t know if that old adage is true or not, but it sure seems that it is. I, however, hope it is not true.

Especially since I have had two troublesome incidents this summer regarding trailers and fishing.

The first instance occurred as a friend and I were trying to head to the DuPage River to take a float trip for some awesome smallmouth bass. We always take two vehicles since we put into the river at one place and take out at another.

My friend was following me and I had a small 8-foot boat on a trailer attached to my vehicle.

Everything was going just fine, until we crossed the Des Plaines River bridge on Interstate 55. The trailer bounced

Frank Welch Memorial takes place at Grundy tonight STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – The fifth annual Frank Welch Memorial “94” presented by Rod Baker Ford will take place tonight at the Grundy County Speedway.

The program will consist of a 94-lap event in three segments 30, 30 and 34 with three different inverts and possibly three different segment winners. In other words, something for everyone.

A unique scoring system of consistency a competitor must maintain will declare the overall winner, lowest score wins.

The 94 Lap Super late model event will carry a record purse for tonight’s competition, with a star-studded field expected.

The event will also feature a full program of Street Stocks and STARS Promotion 4 cylinders.

The event honors the legendary Frank Welch, who was a member of the Grundy County Agricultural District Fair Board for more than 50 years, and served as its president for more than 30 years, as well as serving as Race Promoter for the Grundy County Speedway from 1971 until his death in June 2009.

Past Frank Welch 94 winners include Brett Sontag (2010), Eddie Hoffman (2011

and 2012) and Ricky Baker (2013).

The gates open at 6 p.m.

Friday, with time trials set for 6:45 p.m. and the first race getting the green flag at 8 p.m.

Three Division feature races will highlight the program Including Illinois Truck & Equipment Super Late Model, Street Stocks, and STARS Promotion 4 Cylinders.

Tickets for adults are $15, seniors are $12, and children ages 11 and younger are free.

As always, there is free parking.

Bulls open against New York

The NBA announced the 2014-15 regular-season schedule Wednesday, with the Bulls opening up against Carmelo Anthony Oct. 29 in New York.

There will be little time to breath, coming back for the home opener on Halloween night, and hosting LeBron James and the new-look Cavs.

It will be one of four meetings with James and their division rivals, going to Cleveland Jan. 19, hosting Cleveland on Feb. 12, and then back to Cleveland on April 5.

The circus trip will again be the longest road trip for the Bulls, beginning Nov. 17 in Los Angeles against the Clippers and ending Nov. 30, in Brooklyn.

The Bulls once will again have a Christmas game, hosting former power forward Carlos Boozer and the Los Angeles Lakers that night.

As far as the end of the season, the Bulls will finish at home against Philadelphia, at Brooklyn and then home April 15 against Atlanta.

It was more than just an endorsement.

A shaking of the head in almost disbelief usually is.

Asked in Las Vegas two weeks ago about the play of Derrick Rose, Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski was searching for adjectives.

He really couldn’t find enough.

But now this weekend, Bulls fans will get their first look at the hype, as Rose and USA Basketball resume training for the FIBA World Cup, as well as playing an exhibition game with Brazil at the United Center on Saturday night.

It will continue to be all eyes on Rose, who played just 10 regular-season games since the 2012 playoffs, undergoing two separate season-ending knee surgeries.

As for Rose, expect him to continue to keep it simple, even as good as he looked in the first week of the camp.

“We just have to keep talking to each other, keep giving each other confidence,” Rose said recently. “The thing is gelling quick. Learning players’ tendencies.

“I usually say whatever the game needs, that’s what I’m going to put into the game, man. I learned that by actually playing through my mistakes with the first injury. Just seeing that I was forcing everything. It wasn’t just the way I was playing, I wasn’t enjoying the game like I was before the injury. Now it feels like I appreciate it a little bit more, just enjoy being on the court and playing the game I love playing.”

Not that circumstances haven’t changed for Rose. Team USA suffered two tough losses, first with the Paul George injury and then with NBA MVP Kevin Durant dropping off the roster because of what

he claimed was exhaustion.

So while Rose may be counted on to do more than first anticipated, those that know his game aren’t worried about him trying to do too much.

“I don’t see him forcing anything,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman said. “I see him letting the game come to him and then when he has opportunities to make plays, he makes them. He’s playing with what appears to me great confidence.

“When I say he’s playing with confidence, he is playing with a real nice pace to his game. Obviously, he is so athletic that he’s going to make explosive plays. But I don’t see him rushing in anything that he’s doing.”

The responsibility part of corporate ‘personhood’ An ongoing trial in Georgia might or might not set any legal precedents, but it very well might be making a kind of history.

In Albany, three officials of the now-defunct Peanut Corp. of America are standing trial in connection with the infamous salmonella outbreak of 2008-09 that left nine people dead and more than 700 others sick in 46 states, and led to one of the most massive food recalls ever.

You read that correctly: People are standing trial.

Among details that have emerged in testimony so far: Food and Drug Administration officials came to a nearby Blakely in January 2009, shortly after salmonella-tainted peanut butter had been traced to the plant there. The plant manager, Samuel Lightsey, said the only test that had detected salmonella turned out to be a false positive.

“It was finally on day five that Mr. Lightsey revealed they had had three positives for salmonella,” FDA inspector Bob Neligan testified, “and that would have been in the last year or so. We had continuously asked that from day one.”

After the FDA ordered the company to turn over two years of records, inspectors discovered that the company’s own lab tests had found salmonella in 12 lots of peanuts, peanut paste and peanut butter since 2007.

lab results; Steward Parnell and quality assurance manager Mary Wilkerson are charged with obstruction of justice. Lightsey, the plant manager who concealed positive tests from the FDA, pleaded guilty in May to nine criminal counts.

Nobody who has followed accounts of corporate wrongdoing over the last few years needs an explanation of how significant this case really is. Whether the issue has been “mere” financial misconduct like banking or defense procurement fraud, or far more tragic problems like automobile safety defects, a deadly sugar plant fire or an offshore oil rig explosion, the process usually involves somebody signing a big check, and nobody ever really being held responsible.

But as we have noted before, companies – their shareholders, their financial backers and their millions of honest, hard-working officers and employees – aren’t responsible for these kinds of wrongs. In every one of the tragedies cited above, human beings with names, faces and moral responsibilities made fateful, and ultimately fatal, decisions.

The trial judge in Albany said it could take up to two months just for the prosecution to present its case, and the guilt or innocence of the defendants will then be up to the court to decide. Meanwhile, somebody seems to have figured out that thinly spread “collective” guilt for deadly irresponsibility is a gross perversion of justice.

It’s about time.

The dark side of fun funerals For centuries, religious believers have held solemn funeral rites that were then followed by social events that, in some cultures, could get pretty lively.

The funeral was the funeral and the wake was the wake, and people didn’t confuse their traditional religious rituals with the often-festive events that followed, noted author Chad Louis Bird, a former Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod seminary professor, who is best known online as a poet and hymn composer.

But something strange happened in American culture in the past decade or two: People started planning fun funerals.

“Our culture is anxious to avoid dealing with death. It seems the goal is for people to be able to keep their heads in the sand and not have to face what has happened to their loved one and in their family,” Bird said, in a telephone interview.

Thus, when it comes time to plan funerals, many people in the modern age – including many religious believers – have “lost that sense of the reality, the gravity of death itself,” he added. “The problem is that if

VIEWS Terry Mattingly death is denied, then it’s hard to understand the true meaning of life and our hope for the life to come.”

On one level, it’s easy to blame this on the baby boomers, that giant cohort of 76 million or so Americans who came of age during the cultural revolutions of the late 1960s and early ’70s.

This also was an era, noted Bird, when people increasingly began to define their lives in terms of consumerism and entertainment.

These services tend to focus on good times in the past, rather than on faith, grief and hope in the present. The result, argues Bird, is an “egocentrism that extends beyond this life into a kind of necro-narcissism.”

Bird said religious leaders shouldn’t be surprised that secular consumers are choosing – encouraged by funeral-industry experts – to stage upbeat end-of-life celebrations laced with references to their favorite movies, music, hobbies

and sports franchises. Want to end your “Celebration of Life” with your college fight song or a Beatles classic, like “The End”?

The spirit of the age says, “Just do it.”

The bigger question, said Bird, is why clergy and believers who embrace their own faith traditions would want to join in this trend.

“The funeral is one of the best opportunities that pastors have to preach on the central doctrines of the Christian faith,” he noted. “If you pass up the chance to do that, then you really haven’t honored anyone, including the person who has died or the people who are mourning. ...

“This is serious, because liturgical scholars say that when our liturgies – including our funerals – have changed to fit the culture, then that change is real. I don’t see this as a passing fad.”

‘The Giver’ is the original ‘Hunger Games’

More Content Now If you’re tired of all of these futuristic, post-catastrophe movies adapted from books about hard-headed youth rebelling against convention, maybe you should give this one a try.

“The Hunger Games,” “Divergent,” blah blah blah. They’re formulaic and predictable and, by the way, their authors – Suzanne Collins wrote “The Hunger Games,” Veronica Roth wrote “Divergent” – shamelessly “borrowed” from Lois Lowry, the author of “The Giver,” which was published way back in 1993. A variety of the usual problems (finding the money, getting the script just right, etc.) kept “The Giver” from being made first. Jeff Bridges bought the film rights about 18 years ago, with the thought of having his father Lloyd play the old man of the title. It’s ironic that enough time has passed that Bridges himself is now in that role.

What has resulted, after five tries at the script by different people, is a strong and mostly faithful adaptation of a good book – one that falls under the category of “young adult” fiction but is certainly accessible and of interest to adult readers.

Same goes for the film, even though it’s been Hollywoodized to a degree. (Translated: The film has Meryl Streep playing a strong-willed villain in a part that has been overly and unnecessarily expanded from the book.)

The story takes place well into the future, “after the ruin,” when society has undergone some major changes. There are “communities” here and there that consist of “sameness.” The

“The Giver” is directed by Michael Mitnick and rated PG-13. people in charge, referred to as the Elders, have made sure that there’s no room for any kind of nonconformity or spontaneity.

Everyone is one color (actually there is no color, and much of the film is in black and white), everyone dresses alike, everyone acts alike, there’s no such thing as weather. One day is the same as the next. People are assigned to different jobs, based on whatever capabilities show through their uniform upbringing. But all is kept on an even keel, for everyone’s supposed betterment.

Because they know no other way of life, everyone is happy, or at least content.

Even young Jonas (Brenton Thwaite) who, along with his younger (unrelated) sister, is living in a family unit with their designated “parents,” is fine. Until, when he reaches the end of his childhood (in the book

it was age 12; in the film it’s about 18, yet that change works fine), he’s notified of his life assignment. But it’s not like any of the normal jobs that his friends are getting, Jonas has been chosen by the powers that be to become the community’s “Keeper of Memories,” and will be trained for his position and taught “the secret history of the world” by the longtime current Keeper, now in his new role as the obviously distraught Giver (Jeff Bridges).

This is a place where adults that aren’t in power act like robots, just doing what they’re supposed to do.

There’s some warmth within the family units, but there’s no such emotion of or word for love. And youngsters moving into adulthood are strongly encouraged to act the same way, or they could be candidates for “release” from the community, after which they would go to live

in a place called Elsewhere.

The movie zips right along, featuring simple, streamlined storytelling, just as the book does, and it exudes a quiet creepiness.

Something is just not right about this village, but we’re not sure what, and the film continually grows darker, both for the innocent Jonas and for viewers.

At its heart, it’s a comingof-age story, but demands are made of Jonas to grow up a lot faster than he ever expected to, or perhaps is able to. Newcomer Brenton Thwaites (recently seen as Prince Phillip in “Maleficent”) makes for an appealing protagonist, and he is quite good with a lot of wordless acting, requiring him to get a large range of emotions across with facial expressions, though he’s equally good when speaking.

The best scenes involve him, as the student, paired up with Bridges, as the teacher.

I had severe arthritis in my right hip, the result of a sports injury when I was a young adult. I was limping, and that made me feel old. Worse, I loved long walks and I just couldn’t do it anymore. But I didn’t want to have surgery.

The pain from a bad hip or knee can come from the hip or knee joint itself. But it also can come from tissues and muscles near the hip or knee that are strained by trying to compensate for the bad hip or knee.

Fortunately, there are ways to relieve pain without drugs or surgery. Three non-surgical treatments are particularly helpful: • Ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound sends sound waves into tissues near your hip or knee.

• Gait retraining. Knee and hip problems can cause pain, restrict joint movement or weaken muscles. To compensate, you may change the way you stand, walk or run. Over time, your modified standing, walking or running patterns may further injure your joints. A physical therapist can analyze your gait, or walking pattern, and help you learn to move more efficiently.

I eventually needed surgery: My hip joint was basically destroyed. I’m glad I had the surgery, but I’m also glad I was able to get relief from non-surgical treatments. For some of my patients with hip or knee pain, the non-surgical treatments are all they ever need.

Girl bullies can be vicious Dr. Wallace: It seems like whenever there is a mention of bullies it is about boy bullies. A lot of people don’t believe it, but there are a lot of girls who have been bullied by other girls.

Girl bullies can be very vicious and sometimes they are even worse than the boy bullies They trip you, push you down the stairs, pull your hair, grab your books and throw them around, and that’s not to even mention the mean and nasty things they say to you and even spread untrue rumors about you.

I should know because I was bullied at my old school, but now I’m in a new school and I’m not being bullied here.

I can’t believe how happy I am now at my new school, and I look forward to going back in September! – Nameless, Springfield, Massachusetts Dear Nameless: When we all talk about bullies, we do tend to focus exclusively on the guys. In our mind’s eye, the face of a bully is male.

This turns out to be a mistake. You are correct.

Some girls can and do inflict misery on other girls.

While the boys are more physical than girls and more likely to be involved in fights, girls rule when it comes to inflicting psychological violence on one another, according to a study of U.S. students in grades six through 10 published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Boys were more likely than girls to bully or be bullied, but not by a whole lot.

The fact is that girls don’t fear boys; they fear other girls.

Almost 14 percent of the girls surveyed reported that they had been bullied by a female weekly or even more often; another 22 percent said they’d been bullied once or twice during the school year.

While both boys and girls commonly bullied others with belittling looks or speech, the girls were more apt to use rumor or sexual comments, and some even would try to destroy another girl’s reputation.

Some of the most vicious fights on school grounds were between girls, according to the study.

The problem of girl versus girl is much more severe than parents and educators believe. Many people still see girls as “sugar and spice and everything nice.” Some are, but some aren’t!

It’s time parents, and especially school personnel, identify bullying behavior among females and seek to eliminate it.

I’m very pleased that you are enjoying your new school and that bullying is a thing of the past.

Most people don’t even realize the terror and trauma a student suffers from being bullied. Only the student who is being bullied can relate.

It’s a terribly lonely feeling.

Mitch Hedberg, a stand-up comedian who died in 2005, said, “I would imagine that if you could understand Morse code, a tap dancer would drive you crazy.”

In a few bridge deals, the defenders can lead declarer through a merry dance by tapping him -- leading side-suit winners to make declarer ruff in one hand or the other. This is usually done either to make declarer lose trump control, or to strand a long suit so that declarer cannot establish and run it.

This deal occurred during a social game and the auction is given as it happened. After the first round, I think South should have made a negative double to show his heart suit, not responded one no-trump without a sure spade stopper. North did not know what to do over two spades. Not expecting his partner to have four hearts, North wondered about three no-trump and five clubs. So he cuebid three spades to ask South if he really could control spades. Now South tried four hearts, which North, reading correctly, passed.

Yes, perhaps he should have chosen five clubs, an easy contract to make.

Against four hearts, West led an imaginative spade king. South ruffed in the dummy and should have immediately played on clubs.

But before leading the club king, he drew two rounds of trumps, leaving the ace on the board.

East erred by winning with his club ace. Yes, ducking risks South’s having only a singleton, but declarer would surely have played a club at trick two in that situation. If East had taken the second club and led another spade to tap the dummy, the contract would have gone down in flames.
