’97 Mercury catches fire Wednesday in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District reported to a car fire about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said Thursday responding firefighters found a 1997 Mercury fully engulfed in flames

in the ditch along North Route 47 between the Route 6 interchange and the eastbound Interstate 80 entrance ramp in Morris.

The driver escaped the vehicle on his own.

Steffes said the driver of the vehicle stated as he was approaching the intersection he had no brakes.

He then steered the car into the ditch.

Once the vehicle was resting in the ditch he noticed smoke coming from under the hood and called the fire department.

Steffes said the car was a total loss, but does not have an estimate on the value of the car.

Portlock takes job at Joliet Junior College after 12 years with organization

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – In less than a month, the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry will lose one of its biggest assets.

After 12 years of service, Executive Director Caroline Portlock, is leaving the chamber and taking a position as the workforce development director for Joliet Junior College.

“I like to set a goal for myself. I want to see how I can make an impact on the workforce regionally, using my experience at the chamber,” Portlock said.

The JJC board Tuesday unanimously approved hiring Portlock at an annual salary of $75,083. She will replace Paige Vanderhyden, who resigned June 26.

Since Portlock has been with the chamber, she has led the group in the purchase of the property it was renting when she arrived, developed satellite offices in Coal City and Minooka, almost tripled the number of members, grown an education foundation and more.

“When I started this job, the chamber had 237 members, a staff of three people and one office. Today, we have 600 members, a staff of five and three offices in the area,” she said.

cult to replace because she was always in tune with what the community needed.”

Even though Portlock is beginning a new professional chapter in her life, she has fond memories of her time in Morris. She said she will miss all of the random phone calls the office fields daily that have nothing to do with the chamber’s duties. Portlock said the office even created a top 10 list of questions it has received over the years.

“I took a call once and a lady was asking me how to clean her copper-bottomed pans. I told her I wasn’t sure, and didn’t know pans even had copper bottoms to be honest,” Portlock said. “So, while I had her on the phone I was on my computer looking on Google for information.”

The chamber is seen as a resource for the community, so the office fields many questions the chamber does not necessarily have the answers for. Portlock and the chamber employees had directed the callers to the person or office that can help.

As her time at the chamber comes to a close, friends and colleagues stop by the office to say their goodbyes. Joan Sereno, executive director of Grun-

dy Community Volunteer Hospice, bid Portlock farewell Thursday with the claim to fame that she taught Portlock to be a “hugger.”

“She would never hug and one day I told her that she was going to hug me. Now she finds me in a crowd and gives me a hug. We all need human touches.” Sereno said. “I’m sad she is done. She has done so much for this organization to make it grow.”

Portlock will have a quick turnaround on Sept. 11, which is her last day at the chamber; Sept. 14 is her first day at JJC. JJC President Debra Daniels said Portlock is a good fit for the position and will be managing workforce grants and working with agencies across the state with training development.

“Caroline comes to us with workforce development background and that, combined with her role at the chamber, puts her in the position of knowing community and business and what is needed in workforce and agencies,” Daniels said.

County interns meet, exceed expectations

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Nathan Guth, a recent graduate of Morris Community High School, interned this summer in civil engineering at SPACECO Inc., in Morris.

Guth was authorized by company Vice President Jason Wiesbrock to change figures on a large contract proposal.

The wrinkle, however, is Wiesbrock was out of town and coaching Guth through it over the phone.

“You could tell, he was so nervous,” Wiesbrock said

Wednesday night at the first Grundy County Internship award ceremony.

Guth emailed the file to Wiesbrock, but it kept showing up blank. Guth troubleshooted it and eventually figured it out and sent the correct file.

Wiesbrock told Guth when he spoke at Wednesday’s dinner that SPACECO secured the contract this week to a round of applause from the audience.

Guth was one of 25 young adults honored at the awards dinner, held at the Four Rivers Education Center in Channahon.

Of the 419 applications sub-

mitted to Grundy County Internship Program this year, 25 summer interns were chosen by nine businesses after interviews. The program first began in 2013 with 12 internships from three companies.

The program has grown since then.

All interns met or exceeded expectations, according to the survey given to each business.

About half received an “outstanding” performance rating.

The interns benefit from exposure to responsible behavior and professional work environments. McAdam asked these companies to reach out to others and tell them, “It worked.

You should try it.”

“I’m blown away it’s grown to this level,” McAdam said.

A growing program

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, who spearheaded the program in 2013 with the Grundy Economic Development Council, said she met

with GEDC CEO Nancy Norton Ammer four or five years ago and mapped out the business and industry assets in Grundy County.

With the foundation of nuclear plants and the chemical company corridor along Route 6 as well as other locations, they recognized the area had a foundation of companies with well-paying jobs where young adults could gain valuable work experience.

Rezin, whom Norton Ammer called the “arm twister” on the business end, said much of the workforce in the county is nearing retirement.

A bridge needed to be created, she said, for the next generation of employees. She hopes many of these interns will return to the businesses they interned for as full-time employees one day.

Grundy approves support for MVK rescue district MORRIS – The Mazon Verona Kinsman Rescue Squad District is still working to close the gap on the finances needed to hire two EMTs for five, 12-hour shifts.

On Tuesday the Grundy County Board voted, 15-0, with Debra Warning and Kerry Courtright absent, to approve temporary funding of $25,000 a year to the district for two years.

“We greatly appreciate the efforts the county board put forth to assist us toward our goals to staff the district,” MVK Rescue Squad District President Tammy Halterman said Thursday.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said after identifying the public safety need, it was an important issue to address.

“We need to prioritize funding to the district until they are up and running and self-funded,” Pryor said.

The district estimates it will need $90,000 a year to keep the district staffed from 6 a.m. to 6

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MONTREAL – Bob Fillion, who won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1944 and 1946, has died.

He was 94.

The team’s alumni association said Thursday that Fillion attended most home games in recent years until becoming ill near the end of last season.

“He always came to the building and took notes,” said Rejean Houle, head of the association. “He followed the team very closely.”

Fillion became the oldest surviving Canadien when his former teammate Elmer Lach died at 97 in April. Gerry Plamondon, 91, who played between 1945 and 1951, is now believed to be the oldest surviving Canadien.

Fillion came from a family of seven hockey-playing brothers. One brother, Marcel, made it to the NHL, playing one game for the Boston Bruins in 1944-45. The others played in senior and minor pro leagues.

After his hockey career, Bob Fillion worked as a manager at a mine in his hometown of Thetford Mines, Quebec. In recent years, he lived in St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS BALTIMORE – A cardiologist who served as dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has died.

The school announced that Richard S. Ross, a cardiologist who also served as president of the American Heart Association in the early 1970s, died Tuesday.

He was 91 and had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Ross was dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1975 to 1990, the second-longest tenure in its history.

Dyer formed COPE animal rescue in 2003 in Joliet. Its goal is to help spay and neuter feral cats.

Better concussion protection is on the way If area students haven’t gotten the message yet that summer vacation is nearly over, reality will soon slap them in the face.

For some, that happened Monday, when high school football practice began.

For others, it started when they headed back to class, like Minooka Community High School did Wednesday.

Some students look forward to going back to school. Others aren’t so sure.

But all students should appreciate legislation – which was co-sponsored by our own state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris – passed by the Legislature and signed earlier this month by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The legislation offers them greater protection, not when they’re

slapped in the face by reality, but when they’re hit hard in the head.

We speak of the concussions that some high school athletes suffer during the course of games and practices.

Those brain injuries are serious business.

Unless brains are allowed to properly heal, many residual problems can afflict a concussion victim.

If a second concussion is suffered before the first one has healed, the problems get worse.

A state law enacted in 2011 put into effect standards for the proper care of high school concussion victims.

The new law adds more protections.

Students who suffer a concus-

sion must now get permission from a doctor or trainer before they may fully return to class or sports.

That will keep them from returning too soon, before their brains have healed.

In addition, some concussion-related measures already in place in high schools were extended to elementary, middle and private schools.

And all schools are now required to create plans for dealing with concussions.

We salute the Legislature and governor for their responsible response to this serious issue.

If for no other reason, students can look forward to a new school year where the best interests of their brains will be even better protected.

Morris hopes to keep streak alive

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris boys soccer team has established a tradition under coach David Valdivia.

It wins regional titles.

The Redskins have won four straight regional crowns, and despite having lost 15 seniors from last year’s club, they hope to take a fifth this year.

Their first game is Aug. 27 against Herscher in the Earlville Tournament.

“They have a tradition to uphold now,” Valdivia said.

“When I came in, my goal was to win regionals. That’s definitely a goal we still put forth, along with conference and then sectionals.”

The team will look different this season because alltime leading scorer Ricardo Del Toro has graduated, along with 14 others. But that doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare.

The Redskins return standout goalkeeper Matt Borgstrom, who provides a wealth of experience behind the defense.

“We do have a lot of holes to fill,” Valdivia said. “But one thing we do have is a big leader in the back with Matt Borgstrom in goal. He’s been stepping up a lot this year.

He’s matured a lot, and is just a different kid from last year.

He accepts his role as a leader.

He knows the game and can direct the defense.

“We will have six or seven sophomores that will start, but a lot of them either started or saw a lot of time as freshmen last year, so they aren’t your typical sophomore starters.”

Valdivia will reach into his playbook to direct the team’s fortunes this year.

“I created a formation my first year here on a whim,” he said. “We will use it again this year. But now, I am more knowledgable in the game and I know what talent should go where.

“We aren’t going to be a very big team. It’s a lot different from last year. We are fast in the opposing team’s third, but when it gets back to our third, we have to slow it down.

We aren’t big enough to hold onto the ball, so we have to get rid of it quick and play defense.

“We went to St. Louis University this summer for a camp and played two other teams there. We got a glimpse of our formation and who is going to take those roles.”

The lineup looks to be Collin Tucker, Brian Halvorson and Matt Samolis in the front, with Noah Poston, Connor Shaw, Alex Randall and Brian Pfaff in the middle, and Caleb

Hefford, Evan Gagnon and Connor McGlynn in the back with Borgstrom in goal.

“We still have a lot of guys back from last year,” Valdivia said. “We also have guys that are stepping up and on the borderline, pushing for playing time. Guys like Skylar Wills, Collin Weber have stepped up as sophomores and look good.”

As of now, the other captain for the Redskins is senior Brandon Vazquez, who will sub in as a midfielder and bring a lot of passion and heart to the field.

“Teams in our conference are big and physical,” Valdivia said. “Coaches are coaching that style. It’s a demand in college. Be ruthless to get the ball.

In the professionals, you see it too. Do not let anyone get the ball.

“We don’t have the size yet to do that. The YMCA adult league this summer helped the guys that played in it. They were able to see what physical play was all about. It gave them a taste of the next level.”

As far as the season goes,

Valdivia hopes it goes as some of the previous seasons, one in which a rugged conference schedule gets the Redskins ready to hoist another regional plaque.

“In my honest opinion, I don’t know what other conference teams may have lost,” he said. “But Yorkville will be tough. Sycamore, DeKalb and Kaneland are always

good. Our conference helps prepare us for regionals. That was the difference last year, when Streator was playing 1A schools and we were playing 2 and 3A schools and keeping up with them.

“I think our record was 9-11, but we still got the regional title. Our conference prepares us. I go into it with open arms because of that.”

With summer winding down, school starting up, and the thoughts of fall just around the corner, there are some dates that sportsmen need to be aware of.

First off, Sept. 1 is the dove opener. Each year, dove season marks the start of the hunting year for many outdoors enthusiasts.

Illinois manages lots of possible places where you can go dove hunting if you don’t already have access to private land. I drive by one such public access on occasion and the sunflowers are looking good. I’m sure the birds will be using that field in force.

Sept. 1 also marks the day in which the archery deer permits become available overthe-counter. This includes the combination permits, which cover both antlered and antlerless deer, antlerless only permits, and resident archery fall turkey permits. If you are not sure of your local vendors you can check the IDNR website.

Personally, I like to buy my archery turkey permit whenever I buy my archery deer tags. I don’t necessarily hit the woods with the thought of going turkey hunting, but you never know when a flock will mosey by your tree stand and present an opportunity.

For those hunters who love to chase the Ring-necked pheasant, Sept. 15 is the day you need to keep in mind. The IDNR controlled pheasant site permits open up at that time.

You may go to the controlled pheasant hunting portion of the IDNR website and put in for your dates of choice.

There were 20 sites where hunters could chase down pheasant in the state last year.

Of those, 16 were controlled by the DNR; independent concessionaires managed the other four.

Depending on the site in which you hunt, you may or may not have luck as a standby hunter. We live close to the Des Plaines Conservation Area and Kankakee State Park. Both sites offer controlled pheasant hunts.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers is more apt to have prime times available for a while longer. Both sites take standby hunters, but once again, you may or may not be successful in waiting for a permit at Des Plaines. I have never been turned away for a standby spot when hunting from Kankakee. If there are days you want to lockup, however, I would access the website on September 15.

Also be sure to grab your 2015-16 issue of the state Hunting Digest. All of the dates and seasons are listed in the front of the booklet, as well as the latest rules and regulations changes. In fact, pick up a couple copies. I prefer to leave one in each of my vehicles that I might take to the field. The state does a good job of highlighting regulation changes from one year to the next. They will be highlighted within the rules portion of the digest.

It’s not a bad idea to read through the digest from one end to the other. It can be difficult to keep up with the latest rules, and there is a good chance your hunting pals may not be aware of all the changes either. And we all know that ignorance of the law is no excuse.

I know for a fact that the hunting digests are a hot commodity at local vendors. Full boxes of them get passed out fast. If for whatever reason you can’t find one, the entire document is available in PDF for at www.dnr.illinois.gov.

With smartphones, you can download the digest and keep a copy right in your pocket wherever you may be.

Start to make your plans for the upcoming fall seasons. It will be here before you know it. Take the time to mark some days off on the calendar now, and you will be glad you did.
