Margel Amenda, of Monticello, Illinois, formerly of Decatur, Illinois, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at 11:17 a.m. in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Amenda was born in Mattoon, Illinois, a daughter of Curtis and Eva Walters Wisley.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Monticello, and the Order of the Eastern Star and worked as a legal secretary for Henson, Morthland, Bolen, & Morthland Attorneys for 55 years.

She also worked at the Signal Depot, Borg Warner, and the United States Postal Service. She married George Amenda in Decatur, Illinois, on January 6, 1936.

Surviving are sons, Jeffrey L. Amenda and his wife, Bonita of Monticello, Illinois; Mark D. Amenda and his wife, Lynne of Streator, Illinois; grandsons, Corey, Mark Jr. (Crystal), and Kenneth (Heather); granddaughter, Janet (Ryan); and seven great grandchildren.

• Jeffery L. Evans, 51, was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Aug. 11 on a Will County warrant for failure-to-appear.

• Forrest J. Durancik, 21, was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Aug. 11 on a charge of retail theft. He was given a Sept. 15 court date.

She was preceded in death by her husband on July 13, 1992; two brothers and one great grandchild.

Private family services with no visitation will be held. Entombment will be in the Star of Hope Mausoleum at Graceland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to, Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Born July 13, 1953, in Joliet, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Rogers. Raised and educated in Morris, Linda graduated from Morris High School, with the Class of 1971.

She loved lighthouses, and would travel to visit as many as she could, and even had a large collection of lighthouses. Linda was passionate about maintaining a beautiful home, keeping a meticulous garden and landscaping.

Survivors include her daughter, Shannon (Robert) Cupp of Morris; sister-in-law, Cheryl Rogers of Oak Park; nephew, Joseph Rogers of Oak Park; and her beloved canine companion, Gretchen.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, William Rogers, Jr. A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 3:00PM, in Evergreen Cemetery in Morris, where Linda will be laid to rest with her parents.

jbourque@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – For a 90-yearold piece of parchment, the Coal City VFW’s original charter looks pretty good.

Considering the charter was tucked inside post member Frank Spinozzi’s garage for the past four years, it looks even better.

“Is this really the original? You’ve doctored it all up,” a surprised Spinozzi said Wednesday, after seeing the charter for the first time since its restoration.

The VFW St. Juvin Post 1336 had the document refurbished, making it ready for public display. The charter was signed in March 1925 and includes names of each founding member, written in calligraphy.

Members of the St. Juvin Post gathered Wednesday at the Coal City Public Library, where the historic document was placed on display. The library will house the charter indefinitely as part of the library’s local history section.

The library’s head of reference, Irene Shepkoski, is compiling a book of obituaries and articles about each of the original St. Juvin Post members who signed the document. The book will go on display with the charter, so the public can read about each of the founders.

“It’ll share with the community the links they may have to these families,” Shepkoski said. “A lot of these families are still in the community.”

Such was the case for Coal City resident John Dite, who was at the library Wednesday morning, checking out a book, when he happened to look at the charter.

He was surprised to see his grandfather’s name, Emil Dite, included in the list of founders.

“I had no idea he was a member,” Dite said. “I’m going to come back to take a closer look [at the charter].”

According to Brown, the VFW retains the right to take back the charter if the post purchases a new building, but said that is highly unlikely.

Shepkoski said the charter will hang on the second floor of the library, among other local, historical artifacts.

“It’s just an interesting view into the past,” Brown said. “You don’t get to see things like this very often.”

Morris kid’s steer gets $100K at state fair auction

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Shaelye Varner knows it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to raise an award winning steer.

But nothing prepared the 12-year-old from Morris to have her Grand Champion Junior steer sell for $100,000 at the Governor’s Sale of Champions in Springfield on Tuesday night.

The sale set records at the state fair, being the first animal sold for a six-figure sum.

AT&T, Monsanto, and DeKalb Asgrow combined to bid the $100,000 – which comes to $75.19 a pound, with the steer weighing in at 1,330 pounds.

“This is my second year showing at the state fair,” Shaelye said. “Ted [the steer] has everything a judge wants to see. I had high hopes going into this, but that’s a lot of money.”

She said she will put the money in the bank to save for college. The proceeds also will help someone else go to college, as 10 percent of the winnings go to FFA and another 10 percent to 4-H for a scholarship fund.

Shaelye comes from a long line of cattle showers: Her mother, Laurie Baudino, and her uncle, Eric Baudino, both grew up showing cattle at the state fair, and her cousin, Kevin Carey won state Grand Champion in 2008 with

a then-record-setting auction price of $50,000.

“My cousins, Eric and Laurie, both showed cattle but never got to win at the state show,” Carey said. “Me winning was the icing on the cake. Shae put the candles on the cake. I couldn’t be 155 percent more proud of her.”

Carey said Shaelye does double the work he ever did to win the grand champion spot.

Shaelye’s dad, Frank Varner, said his daughter puts in six to eight hours a day with her steer, starting at 4:30 a.m.

“It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication,” Frank Varner said.

6 Son of woman killed in I-55 crash sues truck driver

COAL CITY – The son of a Coal City woman killed in a deadly chain-reaction crash last month on Interstate 55 near Channahon has filed suit against the driver charged with causing the accident.

Joshua Johnke filed the wrongful death lawsuit Friday in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of his mother, Vicky L. Palacios, 54. She was among the five killed in the July 21 crash.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz and Espinal Trucking are listed as defendants, according to court documents provided

by Johnke’s attorney, Joseph Curcio, of the Chicago personal-injury firm Curcio Law Offices.

The suit alleges Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, acted “carelessly, negligently and improperly” and “willfully and wantonly” the day of the crash, disregarding the construction zone’s speed limit, failing to slow and stop his semitrailer and improperly

The suit also accuses Espinal-Quiroz of carelessly and willfully violating federal law by driving beyond the number of hours allowed by law and falsifying his log book. The suit is seeking damages in “excess of $50,000.”

Espinal Quiroz pleaded not guilty Tuesday during an appearance at the Will County Courthouse on criminal charges related to the accident.

He is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond and is next scheduled to be in court Sept. 9.

Legislative lunch held in Channahon Moving forward, Walsh said a potential $200 million project – which as proposed would build a bridge over the Des Plaines River at Houbolt Road – could reconfigure industrial traffic, avoiding Route 53 or Chicago Street and providing the trucks with direct access into the intermodal parks.

“The anticipation is that it would be privately funded.

There would be a toll bridge for trucks, and it would be free lanes for cars,” Walsh said.

Rezin and Walsh also touched on issues in Springfield, including the state’s budget.

“We adopted a budget that was neither the doomsday budget nor the recommended budget,” McGuire said.

According to McGuire, the budget was a middle ground in which the state will maintain the same levels of funding as the previous year without changing.

Rezin stressed that bringing Illinois’ budget out of a deficit is possible as she cited many other states that have transformed their deficits into surpluses.

“It can happen,” Rezin said. “But it comes with policies. It comes from direction.

It comes from leadership and understanding that you can’t only continue to tax and tax and raise fees to pay for government.”

CHANNAHON – Local lawmakers talked traffic, budgets and education Wednesday during a legislative luncheon organized by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, and state Sens. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Sue Rezin, R-Morris, were the event’s keynote speakers, providing updates from their respective legislative districts and highlighting problems they are working to resolve.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, was scheduled to speak but was unable to attend due to a conflicting committee meeting.

For Rezin, connecting local students with job opportunities within Grundy County has been a major priority.

Aside from helping found the Grundy Economic Development Council summer internship program two years ago, Rezin said she is fostering a new technology training initiative at a local community college.

“I’m hoping next time I’m standing here that I’ll be able to talk to you about a program at the local community college that I’m incredibly excited about,” Rezin said.

For the program, Rezin is partnering local companies with the community college

in hopes of providing area students skills needed to work at Grundy County industrial plants.

“We want our students to stay here, live here and get their training here,” Rezin said.

Walsh and McGuire talked extensively about semi-trailer traffic in the area.

“One of the big issues we’re facing is this congestion of traffic through all of the commerce that’s coming out of these intermodal facilities,” Walsh told the group of public officials, business owners and community representatives.

“We have begun to sit down and look at serious solutions to what’s going on with this truck traffic,” he continued.

Safety measures and new traffic monitoring systems were put into effect this year and were working well, Walsh said, up until last month when accidents on I-55 claimed six lives.

“It was really working. Until the day that tragic accident happened, there was only three accidents in that zone,” Walsh said.

McGuire reiterated the need for better traffic systems in the county, especially with the amount of semi-trailer traffic that moves through the area.

“Certainly one of the fundamental duties of government is to keep people alive,” McGuire said.

“The Grundy County Farm Bureau was created April 1, 1914, when a group of farmers in Grundy County got together to preserve agriculture, and give farmers a voice in legislative issues,” said Tasha Bunting, Grundy County Farm Bureau manager. “One-hundred years later, we’re still here.”

As a way to celebrate this year, local farmers and other antique tractor enthusiasts will get together to travel through Grundy County with a stop in Morris at the Grundy County Courthouse.

The tractors will meet at the farm of Terry and Carol Seggebruch at 6 a.m, at 7940 Pioneer Road. They will then begin their route at 8 a.m. when they will travel from Nelson Road to Scott School Road to Nettle School Road to Old Stage Road, where they will then travel into town for staging at the Court-

As the steer grew over the winter, the workload was rather light, but as summer approached, the work picked up.

“It’s an extreme amount of work for a 12-year-old,” Laurie Baudino said. “She gets up before 5 a.m. and is out washing him by 5 to 5:30 a.m.”

Baudino said other than giving her a morning off here and there to sleep in, Shaelye has gotten up and worked without complaining, giving up time with friends to raise the steer.

“Raising the steer is teaching her a huge responsibility.

It’s a huge job and you can’t not do it just because you don’t feel like doing it,” Baudino said.

In addition to the state fair, Shaelye has shown and won with this steer at the Illinois Beef Expo and at the University of Illinois.

Shaelye plans to continue to show steer at the state level and hopes to earn even more for her college education. She wants to go to college to major in agriculture, or to become a teacher.

Morris volleyball hopes less is more Redskins start practice with six players on varsity roster

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For most of the summer, Morris girls volleyball coach Jackie Litwiler was pretty secure in the fact that she had a solid roster of 12 girls for her 2014 team.

When practice started Wednesday, however, injuries and players moving away had trimmed that roster of 12 to just six, putting the Redskins in wait-and-see mode.

“We have had two season-ending injuries and four

players move away over the summer,” Litwiler said. “We have six right now to start our practice.”

Joanna Nowicki and Alex Kjellesvik are both lost to injuries, but all is not lost for the Redskins, who are coming off a three-year stretch under Litwiler that has seen them win 23, 21 and 19 matches. For starters, junior Kaylin Korte, who has already made a verbal commitment to play for University of Illinois, will be the main offensive threat on the outside. Morris will also have seniors Taya Torkelson as a setter, Amber Misek as a defensive specialist and Emma Thomas in the middle, along with juniors Maren Bashor (outside hitter) and Addison Polite (setter).

On Wednesday, the Redskins were able to wear shoulder pads for the first time, with full pads and full contact coming Saturday in preparation for their Aug. 29 season opener at Minooka.

While Litwiler noted that sophomore Jenelle Brehm seems to be a sure thing to be called up from the sophomore team to the varsity to help fill out the roster, all the other positions are up in the air, making for a spirited competition on the lower levels in practice.

“We hope to get some help from the lower levels,” Litwiler said. “It hasn’t been the best summer for us, that’s for sure. But, it could be something that helps the program in the long run if we are able to find the right mix of kids

“One thing I like is that we do have a lot of girls that have worked hard since last season.

Hopefully, that will make for a better season for us. We were kind of middle of the pack as far as the conference goes last year. It would be nice to see us move to the top of the pack.

That, and get more girls to state and move the ones that have already been there a little farther along.”

“We have gotten great student support the last few years, and we hope that keeps up,” Litwiler said. “The girls get really pumped when the students are there cheering for them, and they are going to need that this year, especially early as we are finding our way.”

MORRIS – After one of the more successful seasons in school history, Morris girls tennis coach Becky Ortega is hoping for one thing this year.

More success.

“We are pretty excited about the prospects for this year,” Ortega said. “One of our goals is to get the three girls who made it to state last year back there and go a little further. We also hope to get more players to state.”

The Redskins sent three players to the state tournament in the Chicago suburbs last year. The doubles team of Monica Davy and Leah Lines returns, as the seniors reached the state tournament

Lines went 2-2 at the state tournament last season, while Megan Davy was 0-2 at the tourney.

Other varsity players for the Redskins this season will be junior Emma Dingbaum, who made a deep sectional run last year, junior Hanna Burblys, sophomore Rachel Burblys, junior Autumn See, junior Rachel DeGrush and sophomore Alyssa Larsen.

5 Players to watch on ‘D’ vs. Jaguars

harkush@chicagofootball.com There are very few guarantees in the National Football League but one of the rare ones is, if the Bears’ defense doesn’t make significant improvement in 2014, they will once again be an 8-8 team, or worse.

While the belief things will be better on “D” in Chicago is rampant because of a huge influx of veteran free agents and the use of four of their first five picks in the draft on defense, we’ve received no proof so far this preseason.

The Bears’ second preseason game against Jacksonville could offer some comfort. Here are five key players to watch: 1. Will Sutton: Veterans Jared Allen and Jeremiah Ratliff may bring stability and occasional playmaking impact, but at best both are well down the home stretch of their careers.

Sutton looked to me to be the best three-technique tackle in this year’s draft and could make a huge impact sharing time at the three with Ratliff if he’s NFL ready. I’ve seen the lightning first step in Bourbonnais that might make him a disruptive force in opposing teams’ backfields, but now it’s time to see it in an NFL game against at least second team competition, if not the ones.

2. Jon Bostic: Bostic was having an excellent training camp until the first preseason game against the Eagles, when he appeared to have forgotten everything he’d learned during the offseason. His natural position is weakside linebacker, which he will not get a crack at as long as Lance Briggs is a Bear. But he will be on the field with Briggs whenever the

Bears are in the “Nickel,” and he needs to make some plays against the Jags, or at least be in the right place at the right time a lot more than he was as a rookie or in the Eagles game.

3. Christian Jones: It’s difficult to project an undrafted rookie free agent even making the team, let alone earning meaningful playing time, but Jones is the only true natural strongside linebacker on the roster. He would have been a mid-round draft pick were it not for a diluted drug test and he needs to prove it against the Jags to generate some urgency in the competition for linebacker spots on the roster.

4. Adrian Wilson: With all the veteran safeties the Bears have in camp, we know Wilson is the only one who can actually move the needle on this defense if he has anything left.

The Bears need to know sooner rather than later to help sort out the rest of the group.

5. Brock Vereen: After running with the 1s through most of the offseason OTAs and minicamp, Vereen was demoted early in camp and it’s not really clear why. The Bears said it was to see how he’d handle adversity. Apparently not so well, since he hasn’t been back with the 1s since. All of the vets at safety are career journeymen, with the exception of Wilson. If Vereen can’t play Robin to Wilson’s Batman, it’s unlikely the Bears will take a meaningful step forward at the position.

An anniversary we should keep in perspective Forty years ago last week, the president of the United States announced his resignation.

Richard M. Nixon, weakened by two years of metastasizing scandal that had begun with a moronic burglary, conceded certain impeachment and conviction. Shortly after noon the next day, Gerald Ford was sworn in as our 38th president and told us our “long national nightmare” was over.

Even Americans old enough to remember might forget just how nightmarish it had become. Nixon himself insisted, amid successive revelations about the seediness of his presidency, that “a year of Watergate is enough.” Sadly, worse revelations were yet to come.

In the four decades since Nixon’s resignation, and with increasing intensity over the last two, “impeachment” has somehow evolved from government’s unlikeliest and most profoundly regrettable corrective responsibility to an almost routine political threat. One president has actually been impeached, under circumstances history will almost surely regard as somewhere between politically frivolous and constitutionally ominous; and impeachment threats against the two succeeding presidents have been thrown around with stunning civic irresponsibility by people who know better.

Maybe, in that context, this is an anniversary of critical historical importance.

Richard Nixon was not fundamentally corrupt, politically incompetent or zealously partisan. He was a brilliant diplomat whose foreign policy triumphs have, arguably, never been eclipsed. But political vindictiveness and paranoia left him vulnerable.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

As George Will recently related in a column, Nixon had already ordered a break-in at the Brookings Institution a year before the Watergate burglary. Edmund Muskie’s presidential campaign was sabotaged with a phony racist letter.

After Daniel Ellsberg helped leak the so-called Pentagon Papers – the Defense Department’s secret history of Vietnam, a war the Kennedy/ Johnson brain trust had long ago concluded was unwinnable – Nixon operatives burgled Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office.

And just six days after the burglary of Democratic headquarters at the Watergate Hotel, Nixon was recorded on his own Oval Office taping system crafting a massive conspiracy.

That’s the short list.

Those still tempted to think of impeachment in political terms should reflect on a couple of historical realities. The political backlash after Nixon’s downfall was not against the opposition party, but against President Ford – a good and decent man whose politically unselfish decision to pardon Nixon and thus spare the nation further turmoil probably cost him re-election in 1976.

Contrast that to the Clinton impeachment, from which the president himself emerged virtually unscathed, while his political opposition suffered at the polls.

Americans are not stupid.

Political hyperbole aside, we share a core value that says negating the will of the voters is not something that should ever be undertaken recklessly.

Those behind the bully pulpits of both parties might want to keep that in mind.

Jazz might be easy to mock, but it’s music that still matters

Special to The Washington Post NEW ORLEANS — When I was 16, I enthusiastically confessed to my guitar teacher that I wanted to become a professional jazz musician.

After the lesson, he told my mother: “Don’t let him do it.

He’ll be doomed to a life of frustration.”

I didn’t listen.

In the 20 years since that afternoon, I have definitely experienced that frustration.

But it doesn’t define my life, and I hardly feel “doomed” to it. The jazz sub-culture is alive and, if not exactly well, as determined as ever to stay alive. We know that what we do is valid, even important, in the way that any art form is important. It is a creative act rather than a destructive one, and that makes it a valid human endeavor.

Yes, our work is underappreciated and poorly remunerated at times. That’s OK; we knew what we were getting into. Nobody lied to us about fame and fortune when we were young. We’re chasing a peak experience: When we improvise and everything comes together, when it falls perfectly into place, there’s nothing like it.

It’s otherworldly. We’re happy to share this with you, but if you’re not interested, that’s OK too! We’ll keep playing.

And sometimes things turn out beautifully. As I finished a tour of Japan last week, I felt great. The gigs had been wonderful, the audiences enthusiastic, and everywhere I went in Japan – bars, shopping malls, coffee shops – I heard jazz. (Everywhere except Starbucks, anyway.)

The scolds of the world mean well, and they are very sensible in their bitterness.

So imagine my surprise (as I waited for boarding to

In it, a comedian pretending to be Sonny Rollins laments, “in his own words,” his choice to become a jazz musician. The piece was not funny; it was deeply negative, nihilistic even. It ended with “Sonny” declaring: “I hate music. I wasted my life.”

It’s not that jazz musicians lack a sense of humor.

As you’d expect, we have a pitch-perfect gallows sensibility, honed over a century’s worth of badly paid gigs and lack of respect from the monoculture. Jazz musicians are the funniest people I know. But why was The New Yorker so hostile to the jazz community? It upset many of us.

The real Sonny Rollins’s online response brought me back from the brink. Every aspiring artist, musician and creatively minded person should watch it and glean some wisdom and encourage-

ment from the master: www. youtube.com/watch?v=aYt8B2RkqrM. I made it back to the states, rejuvenated by Sonny’s positivity. Then, between sets on a Friday night gig, I saw an article in The Washington Post called “All that jazz isn’t all that great” in which the author lists five reasons why he thinks jazz is “insubstantial and hard to grasp.”

He begins this way: “Jazz is boring. Jazz is overrated.

Jazz is washed up.” What was going on? The author, Justin Moyer, doesn’t like jazz, that much is clear. Perhaps he prefers Big Freedia to Wes Montgomery; that’s a perfectly valid choice. But had August been declared national Kick-a-Jazz-Musicianin-the-Teeth Month while I was away?

Here’s the thing: Jazz has certainly not stopped evolving, as Moyer argues. When I graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (a performing arts high school) in 1998, I sounded like

Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Steve Masakowski and Pat Martino, with a bit of “Question and Answer”-era Pat Metheny thrown in. Since then, one of the greatest frustrations (and sometimes joys) of my career has been constantly returning to the proverbial “woodshed” to deal with all the innovation in the music since then.

On my instrument alone, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Peter Bernstein and Ben Monder (among many others) have taken music to new places.

The rhythmic and metric world of jazz has moved light years beyond 4/4 time, aided by “Black Codes”-era Wynton Marsalis, the Brad Mehldau trio and others too numerous to mention; the music of Brian Blade and Jon Cowherd in the Brian Blade Fellowship has incorporated harmony from the most sophisticated pop music as well as the spirit of the sanctified church.

Keeping up with all the innovation in jazz can feel like an exercise in futility.

It’s exponential!

If there is a sin that we’ve committed, it’s a sin against the market. By choosing to spend our lives playing music that isn’t easily branded or marketed, we confuse the mainstream. Jazz, at its best, is artistic entertainment – not as heady as 21st century classical music, but more esoteric and sophisticated than your average pop tune.

Pop is a commodity; jazz is artisanal. People around the world understand and appreciate its place on the spectrum of musical art and entertainment, but Americans have trouble with us.

Wife under pressure from spouse to drink Dear Abby: I’m not much of a

drinker. I have nothing against drinking or those who do. I just do not like the taste of alcohol. Worse, I have a very low tolerance for it. After only half a glass of wine, I become sleepy. It makes me feel physically awful.

My husband takes offense to the fact that I don’t want to drink. When we’re out with friends, he’ll have three or four beers and pressure me to the point of embarrassment in front of them until I finally give in and order a glass of wine. Of course, I then spend the rest of the evening feeling terrible.

When we get home, he’ll want to be intimate, but I just want to go to sleep, which aggravates him further.

I have tried for several years to discuss this with him, but he can’t explain why he does this.

When I finally confronted her about it, she went to her mother

and said I was bullying her because of her being gay. Her mother yelled at me and told me to “get my act together or get out of her life.” Her mother is like a second mother to me.

Other than this, Cecily has been a great friend. Abby, I have tried everything. Consider asking your mother to talk to Cecily’s mother and explain that you’re not homophobic but feel her daughter is being manipulative. If the woman hears it from another adult, she may talk to her daughter about it. However, if that doesn’t work, you may have to decide if it’s worth it to continue the relationship.

Many services, resources available to care for ailing patients Dear Doctor K: I’m a working mother. I also care for my ill and aging father. Are there professionals or services that can help me care for him?

Dear Reader: There can be plenty of rewards in caring for an ailing parent. I’ve had many patients and friends who have told me that they got closer to their parents in the process of caring for them.

However, that care takes a toll, especially when you’re also juggling other responsibilities. Here are some services and professionals you might want to look into.

• Adult day services offer a variety of programs. They may include transportation, nursing care, meals, personal care (such as help with bathing or toilet use), social opportunities or rehabilitation.

• Certified nurse’s aides can help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and personal care. They cannot administer medications.

• Home health aides may administer medications. They also perform personal services such as

• Nurses offer skilled nursing care, such as inserting IV lines, cleaning wounds and changing bandages. They can also administer medications.

• Hired companions and homemakers. You can hire someone who is not a trained medical professional to help with meals, shopping and laundry. This person can provide companionship.

• Meal programs. Your father may be able to get hot, nutritious meals brought to the home through programs like the Meals on Wheels (www.mowaa.org).

• Case managers coordinate services and help manage red tape. They can also communicate information between patient, caregiver, family and physicians.

• Physical, occupational or speech therapists may do in-home therapy sessions.

• Respite care workers provide caregivers with time off from their caregiving duties.

• Transportation services.

Some communities, religious and community organizations and senior centers offer free or low-cost transportation to medical appointments for seniors or people who are disabled.

There are more support services for ailing older people today in the U.S. than when I went to medical school. It surprises me how many of my patients don’t know of this, and how many doctors don’t refer their patients to these services.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ website, www.healthfinder.gov, may be able to refer you to services in your community. Ask your father’s doctor about other resources in your community.

Take the teen drug use quiz Dr. Wallace: When my wife and I divorced two years ago, she received custody of our then-10year-old daughter and our then-14-year-old son.

Our daughter is now 12, and our son is now 16 years old.

Six weeks before school was out, Eric and his friends were caught lighting a fire in the boys’ restroom. He was expelled for the remainder of the school year.

His mother was at wit’s end and called and asked me if our son could live with my wife and me. She felt this was a good idea to separate him from his delinquent friends. I love my son, and my wife and I agreed to take him in and enroll him in our local school for the remainder of the school year and then for summer school so he could adjust to the new school and make new friends.

He seemed relieved that he had a new chance and started out doing really well.

Then lately he has been hanging out with some unsavory-looking guys and his grades are not as good as they should be although he has good intelligence.

My wife and I have discussed this, and she thinks that he might be doing drugs. When I confronted him with this possibility, he said that he is drug-free. He could be telling the truth, and we have searched his bedroom several times and we haven’t found any drug evidence but we are still worried.

Since we are not up on what to look for exactly to determine if a teen is doing drugs, we thought you could tell us what to look for. We would appreciate your help, and I’m sure there are other parents who

Can you think of a better way to find the best opening lead than to listen to the bidding?

Look at the West hand and the auction in today’s diagram.

What should West lead against four spades?

When the opponents are cruising toward a game or slam, pay attention. In particular, work out how many points each player has. And sometimes you will also know the distribution of at least one opponent’s hand -- as in this deal.

North announced five hearts, four clubs and three spades; his hand had 3-5-1-4 (or perhaps 3-5-0-5 or even 3-6-0-4) distribution. He also promised extra strength, usually 15 or 16 highcard points. With a minimum, he would have raised one spade to two spades.

South showed game-invitational values with three-card heart support. Then, when he preferred four spades to four hearts, he indicated five spades.

Given that dummy is very short in diamonds, leading that suit has little appeal. (Yes, it works if East wins the first trick and shifts to a low club.) A trump is too passive. The opponents have bid quite strongly, so it is probably right to lead actively. That means choosing the club jack.

East takes dummy’s queen with his ace and returns the suit. Then the defenders can take two clubs, one diamond and one heart for down one.
