DIAMOND – Two suspects were apprehended after an armed robbery was reported Tuesday night of the Stop N Smoke store in Diamond.

According to the Grundy County Jail log W e d n e s d a y , Leemelvin L e e m e l v i n J . J. Counsell Counsell, 18, of Braidwood, is being held on a charge of aggravated robbery.

Wilmington also was taken into custody and is being held at River Valley Justice Center in Joliet.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said formal charges would be filed Thursday when the suspects are expected in court. The two were arrested about an hour after sheriff’s deputies responded to the armed robbery call at the store at 2565 E. Division St. in Diamond.

“We had a deputy respond within one minute of the call, and he was able to get a good description of the suspects,” Grundy County Sheriff Kevin

Callahan said Wednesday.

Callahan said his office received a call about 5:30 p.m. concerning two males who stole an undisclosed amount of cash and cartons of cigarettes and fled toward the mobile home park on the other side of Division Street.

Callahan said no gun was recovered, but police reports state the employee of the store reported the two suspects came behind the counter and the juvenile lifted his shirt, gesturing to something in his waistband, and appeared to be threatening her with a weapon.

“There was no weapon displayed or recovered,” Callahan said.

Another call came in that two suspects were in the backyard of a home at the mobile park.

After a police chase on foot, the suspects were apprehended by sheriff’s deputies, according to police reports.

The juvenile was reported missing to police in Kankakee just before the alleged armed robbery, Callahan said.

Grundy County Chamber leader moves on to Joliet Junior College

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As Caroline Portlock leaves the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce to work at Joliet Junior College, she said she intends to continue helping local businesses after accepting the role.

Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved Portlock, executive director of the chamber, to become the new workforce development director.

She will start in the middle of September and plans to help the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce transition with the hiring of a new executive director.

“I’m really excited about Caroline the role and the role I can Portlock play in helping business with their workforce needs,” Portlock said.

She said the Chamber is ac-

cepting applications for the executive director position, and résumés already have been submitted.

Portlock wanted to join JJC after seeing firsthand the effect workforce training can have on a community.

She said she is familiar with that training from her time serving the Grundy Kankakee

Special needs day at Three Rivers Festival continues to grow; more than 1,000 attend

CHANNAHON – James Kopin, 7, of Channahon sat Wednesday next to his cousin, with his “Star Wars” hat pulled on tight as the caterpillar ride climbed steadily up its tracks.

As the ride rushed down the hill and around curves, laughter erupted from his family members and friends around him.

Laughter was the only sound that could be heard on the Fantasy Amusement Carnival ride Wednesday afternoon at the Three Rivers Festival in Channahon. The miniature roller coaster carried fun-seekers while the lights and music were shut off so those attending who have sensory issues could enjoy their time at the carnival.

“This is our third year coming here,” said James’ mother, Jill Kopin. “It’s huge for us. He can come here and there isn’t a thousand people and all the lights.”

Wednesday marked the fifth year the Three Rivers Festival opened specifically for people with special needs for an afternoon before the public opening Wednesday night. The event is hosted by the Rotary clubs of Channahon-Minooka, Joliet and Morris.

One of the special guests of Wednesday’s exclusive day was James Kopin, who has autism. Autism spectrum disorder is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

For many with ASD, the mix of crowds, lights, loud music and other noises associated with a carnival makes it difficult for them to attend because of sensory issues. So

Mike Rittof, Three Rivers Festival co-chairman and Joliet Rotary Club member, said organizers got the idea of hosting a special needs day after doing research on Fantasy Amusement Company.

“The idea originated when we changed to Fantasy Amuse-

ment. When we were calling references we found out they did a special needs day with another Rotary Club,” Rittof said. “We went to see how it worked and decided to offer it here.”

Fantasy Amusement Company donates all its services in order to have rides running so children and adults with special needs can enjoy the day with friends and family.

“It gives the opportunity to special needs individuals who can’t go to a regular carnival for a day of fun,” Rittof said.

Jill Kopin said the opportunity has enriched her son’s life. It’s made it easier for him to go to carnivals because he knows what to expect. But the day open to just the families of guests with special needs is much easier.

Ethan Scheidt, 11, of Minooka has cerebral palsy and

utilizes a wheelchair for mobility. The day makes it easier for him and his family to get from ride to ride and gives him access to more opportunities.

After he was carried from the bumper cars by his father, Patrick Scheidt, Ethan smiled and pointed to the next ride he wanted to get on.

“This is our second time attending,” Patrick Scheidt said.

“It’s awesome because the experience allows him to get on the rides quick.”

Oftentimes as a family, they decide outings based on the other childrens’ wants and needs, he said. To have one day centered around Ethan is a great way to spend family time.

For brother and sister Aidan, 8, and Mikayla Morrison, 10, of Channahon the day was just one of many filled with sibling fun.

Mikayla enjoys helping with her little brother, who has Down syndrome. She said the day was awesome as she escorted her brother from another ride.

As Aidan climbed off the motorcycle ride, he pumped his fists in the air as he yelled “I did it!”

Soon Mikayla was being dragged to another ride that also featured motorcycles, something Aidan’s parents said he enjoys.

Rittof said the event has grown since its inception five years ago when about 150 people attended. This year, more than 1,000 signed up to attend.

Lunch was provided by Carnagio Enterprises, franchise owners of six McDonald’s restaurants including the one on Mondamin Street in Minooka. Dessert was provided by TCBY in Shorewood.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD MORRIS – In Kevin Callahan’s 32 years at the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, he has only used one sick day.

On Tuesday, the Grundy County Board passed a resolution paying him $36,974 for his accrued sick time and five weeks vacation he didn’t use before becoming sheriff.

As a sheriff, he doesn’t get sick days or vacation, which is the case with most of the county’s elected officials. It’s a salaried position that is paid whether they are behind their desk or not.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said it is standard practice that if a person who is employed by the county seeks election and wins, they are entitled to the same payout of sick time and vacation time they would have

earned if they had retired.

“It’s standard practice – the same as in retirement that is covered in our policy,” Welter said. “As an example, Kay Olson is another employee who was paid for her sick time when she was elected as the county clerk.”

Olson worked for the Grundy County Clerk’s Office for 11 years before she was elected.

Welter said the policy to pay accrued sick time is an incentive the county uses with its employees so they don’t abuse the use of the sick days, which in turn can cost the county more money.

“The sheriff’s office is a 24hour office. It costs the county more money if we have to pay someone overtime to cover a shift when a deputy calls off,” Welter said.

Callahan said it’s in the contract with department employees for them to receive

50 percent of their sick time, while the other 50 percent goes into their pension.

“It’s a way to encourage them to not use sick days they don’t need to,” Callahan said.

Sick pay is determined by the number of hours worked and the rate of pay. He said he was paid for 560 hours of sick time along with 200 hours of vacation he received as chief deputy, at the rate of $48.65 an hour he was being paid.

He said the vacation time was given to him at the beginning of the county’s fiscal year, which starts Dec. 1 – and with the death of Sheriff Terry Marketti on Dec. 14, 2012, he hadn’t used his vacation before he took office.

Welter said the policy for county employees outside of the sheriff’s office is a payment of 25 percent of their unused sick time when they retire or leave.

Grundy County included in ag disaster designation

By MORRIS HERALD–NEWS Grundy County is among the 87 counties in Illinois the U.S. Department of Agriculture has included in an agricultural disaster area designation that will make farmers eligible for low-interest emergency loans.

Gov. Bruce Rauner requested in a July 23 letter the declaration, which also includes 14 contiguous counties, to help farmers who suffered losses because of rain and flooding this year, according to a news release from Rauner’s office.

The 19 members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation also signed a letter to

President Barack Obama to endorse the governor’s request for this designation.

Counties eligible for assistance were determined through the Loss Assessment Reports reviewed by the USDA. Farmers should contact their county Farm Service Agency office if they think they are eligible for assistance.

Loan applications are considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the extent of losses, security available and applicant’s repayment ability.

D-101 board considers program

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School Winterguard and Colorguard presented Monday to the District 101 board an update on its program, which is moving into its third year.

Laura Zomboracz, a science teacher at Morris High School, is coach of the Winterguard and Colorguard. In the 2014-15 school year, Zomboracz and the team put in 840 hours of practice time, according to sponsor Heidi Pfaff.

The board watched a recording of the Winterguard’s March performance at the Midwest Colorguard Circuit in La Porte, Indiana, where the team placed seventh out of 14 teams.

The performance was inspired by World War II, when many did not return from battle. Voice-over actors read love letters placed over the soundtrack of “See You Again” by Carrie Underwood.

Zomboracz said the performance was of emotional importance to the team because several members have relatives who have served or are

serving in the military.

“It was a moving show,” Zomboracz said.

Board President Denny Best asked about the upcoming year’s performance at the board meeting. Zomboracz said the Winterguard will perform an Alfred Hitchcock-inspired theme this year, noting there is a different theme each year and the possibilities are endless.

Zomboracz thanked Superintendent Pat Halloran for finding funds in the band budget for purchases that have helped the team, which doubled in size in two years.

The team is gearing up for a performance at a high-profile show later this year in St. Louis.

Although Colorguard/Winterguard is not an IHSA competition, Halloran said some expenses are covered through the school’s budget. The competition season begins in October and ends in April. The Colorguard took first place at a Sandwich High School competition last fall.

Pfaff said the program intends to list as a co-ed team.

There was one male on the team last year. The group

also wants to be referred to as “Colorguard/Winterguard” rather than “Flags.” Halloran said Wednesday the request already is reflected in the student handbook.

The team intends to form a booster group to help fund its expenses and further expand the program.

Halloran said board action is only required when accepting donations from booster clubs, and the team will be informed of bylaws regarding booster clubs.

Pfaff said the program intends to request a stipend for Zomboracz for her time and effort going forward. Pfaff said Zomboracz’s work provides well-being and instills social responsibility in the students, and they believe Zomboracz should be compensated for her work.

Halloran said Wednesday there is one more year on the district’s collective bargaining agreement with teachers and it likely will be addressed in re-negotiations.

“It’s an emerging activity,” Halloran said Wednesday.

“We’ve supported expansion of the program. Mrs. Zomboracz is doing a great job.”

Painting to give glory to God

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Arol McFadden, lead pastor at Minooka Bible Church, had just sold his 4-by-4-foot Statue of Liberty painting, when state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, stopped to admire it and asked if he would commission a 3-foot version for her.

McFadden, who said he dabbles in art only occasionally, was happy to do so. When he completed the new rendition, Rezin came to Minooka Bible Church to pick it up.

“He has a unique style that I have not seen,” Rezin said.

The festival that started it all

McFadden hadn’t considered participating in Morris’ Liberty Arts Festival until he was invited to do so. McFadden said he had sold one of his works at a Morris gallery last year and thought it might have spurred the invitation.

It was an opportunity to use up the pile of 100-year-old maple floorboard piled up in his garage, a gift from a friend who remodeled their apartment. For McFadden, the wood was the perfect canvas.

“Each piece had been beaten up, scratched, dinged and stained, so it already had a history,” McFadden said. “I wanted to paint something on it that told a story.”

However, the stories had to reflect the wood: challenging and imperfect, but full of beauty when one looks back on it, McFadden said. Some of his depictions included the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus’ entire poem “The New Colossus,” and Martin Luther King Jr. on the road to civil rights.

McFadden said he painted 10 to 12 different works.

Their creation took McFadden about six weeks total, working at odd times, such as when his children were playing outside or sleeping. To further enhance the depiction of those stories, McFadden said he used a combination of different paints – acrylics, oil and spray.

“It’s a fun process to experiment and see what works best,” McFadden added.

Canine actor Uggie, known for role in ‘The Artist,’ dies

By SUE MANNING The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier who became a canine star for his scene-stealing role in the Oscar-winning movie “The Artist,” has died.

Uggie was euthanized Friday after a bout with prostate cancer, his owner, Los Angeles animal trainer Omar Von Muller, said Wednesday. The dog was 13.

“He was a real friend. He was very special,” said Von Muller, who plans to bury the dog in his backyard.

In “The Artist,” Uggie played the canine companion to Jean Dujardin’s fading silent-film star. The movie won Academy Awards for Best Picture, lead actor and director in 2011.

“The main message that Uggie would like to send to everybody out there is to please adopt,” Von Muller said at the paw-print ceremony. “He’s adopted. He made it. If you guys can adopt a dog, even if they don’t make it on the big screen, they’ll be big stars at your house.”

Von Muller made it a point to keep Uggie in shape and feeling young with exercise, including using a dog treadmill.

“If they don’t get their exercise, they get old too fast, just like people,” the trainer said in an interview three years ago.

Von Muller announced Uggie’s death in Facebook post, saying, “Our beloved boy has passed away.”

The Morris Elementary Education Association provided volunteers throughout the day to help collect donations and fill a bus donated by Illinois Central School Bus with school supplies.

“Stuff the Bus” is part of the Back to School Assistance program in which We Care teams up with Operation St. Nick and Keeping Your Kids in Shoes to provide assistance to low-income families in Grundy County. The program helps more than 350 kids a year, according to a news release from We Care.

“Each year, students come in who don’t have enough supplies or any supplies,” said Jill Lee, a third-grade teacher at White Oak Elementary School.

New coach Lafond excited about Morris’ chances

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Taylor Lafond took over as head coach of the Morris girls volleyball program in July, it was a bit like moving into a new apartment – not completely furnished, but containing most of the big pieces.

The Redskins return three starters – half of the starting lineup – from a team that went 18-13 last season. And the most crucial member, Kaylin Korte, is among them.

Korte, arguably one of the most heralded volleyball players in MCHS history, has already committed to University of Illinois and spent time this summer at the Illini camp as well as a Team USA camp in Iowa where she got to play against international competition.

“Obviously, it’s huge to have Kaylin Korte back for her senior season,” Lafond said. “She’s been on the varsity for three years now, so that experience will be a strength.

She did a lot of work outside our program over the summer, and she got to see a lot higher level of competition, so that should work in our favor.”

Korte said she is glad to be home.

“It was a busy summer,” she said. “I finished club season in Orlando, Florida, at the end of June, then went to the U of I camp the first week of July.

After that was Team USA in Iowa. Now, I get to come back and play school ball. I am looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be different this year with a new coach, but all of the girls have been working hard. I think I can be a leader. Both on and off the court, this team trusts me and knows that I know how to play volleyball. I am looking forward to a leadership role.”

Korte isn’t the only returning starter.

Also back are outside hitter Janelle Brehm and middle hitter Destiny Cano, making up a formidable front row.

“Having those three back is nice,” Lafond said. “We have some explosive players up front. The key for us this year is to play good defense. I will

“We want to be very scrappy on defense and get to some balls that maybe we didn’t get to last year. It’s nice to have the offense, but without the defense, nothing starts.”

The offense will run through setters Ashley Hood

and Addison Polite. Candidates for the libero position are Corrine Day, Claire Ferguson and Jasmine Cook, while Veronica Johnson and Ryan Friend also will be middle hitters. Right-side hitters include Colleen Soper, Laney Kief and Maren Bashor.

“I am very excited about our numbers,” Lafond said.

“Last year when practice started, there were only six varsity players because of injuries and people moving. This year, we have 15 on every level, so we will actually be able to practice against girls our own level. Everyone is excited to get going. We hope that the conference title comes our way this year, especially after finishing 2-6 in conference last year. We have a lot of talented girls who have a lot of enthusiasm.”

Lafond will be assisted on the varsity level by Josh Williamson, Laura Wills will coach the sophomore team and Hali Steffes and Scott Howell are the freshman coaches.

Each time the athletic trainers of Athletic Therapeutic Institute are on the field or court with a team, they never know what they might face – a minor cut, an injured knee or something more serious.

Because of that unpredictability, ATI Physical Therapy continues to host its annual Kickoff Week before the start of the school year.

The weeklong program is designed to sharpen imperative medical skills with seminars and hands-on instruction, addressing topics in the sports medicine such as concussion management, emergency response, acute injuries, CPR, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

A unique feature included in the week’s training is “In 2 Minutes or Less,” an interactive sports emergency management program facilitated

by Sports Medicine Concepts Inc. The prograim aims to simulate lifelike scenarios by requiring ATI athletic trainers to demonstrate proficiency in a range of critical care techniques.

Some of these techniques include: repositioning in the assessment of neurological injury, protection of in-line cervical stabilization, emergency management of protective athletic equipment, transfer and preparation for transport of the equipment-laden athlete, emergency airway management, delivery of high-quality CPR and emergency action planning “Our kickoff week is the single most important event we do each year,” said Jason Pequette, the senior sports medicine director at ATI Physical Therapy. “Our athletic trainers are provided with the cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on training they need to respond appropriately on the field. The safety of athletes is our top priority, and this week helps to ensure our team is ready to give the highest level of care in any situation.”

The athletic trainers of ATI Sports Medicine are certified healthcare professionals who work with athletes at all stages of their activities.

Athletic trainers are specialists in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. In addition to being present at games and practices to treat acute injuries, athletic trainers work closely with players, coaches, parents and physicians to improve the overall health of athletes in preventing future injuries. Locally, ATI Sports Medicine supports the high school athletes in Minooka, Coal City and Morris.

Sometimes understanding the engineer of a bidding convention takes some clear thinking. We are looking at New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor - one of a major – one notrump, two of the unbid minor by the responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information.

In this deal, when South bids two hearts, he indicates a four-card suit and denies three spades. Then, when responder continues with three clubs, it is natural and game-forcing. (With a weak hand and club support, North would have jumped to three clubs over one no-trump -- see yesterday’s column.) North should realize that if South has only two spades, he must have four or five clubs.

South’s three-spade bid shows a doubleton high honor. Then North uses Blackwood before signing off in seven clubs.

Note that in spades or no-trump, there are only 12 winners: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. But in clubs, a fifth club trick is available.

South takes the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace and draws two rounds of trumps, uncovering the 4-1 break.

Then he plays three rounds of hearts, ruffing the last in the dummy, draws trumps, and claims 13 tricks, the same 12 as in spades or no-trump plus the heart ruff. ******

Forward thinking can help parents deal with cancer Dear Abby: I’m writing in response to “Not Talking About the Future” (March 24), whose wife has breast cancer, was told she has only a few years to live, and feels sad when her kids talk about their futures.

My dad was diagnosed with stage four multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in 2006.

He was told that even the most aggressive treatment would buy him only two or three more years. Well, he’s now working on year nine.

While I must admit that it’s been hard at times for me to stay positive about his prognosis, I try not to let it show.

Instead, every chance I get, I talk about the future with him – holiday plans, plans for my wedding next year, projects around his house, etc. It helps to take his mind off the pain

Forward thinking has been great medicine for Dad. “Not Talking” and his wife don’t really know how much more time she actually has, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to think positively. – Looking Ahead In

involving the future. One thing my mom, who died last year, did for the future was to take a video of herself visiting with her grandnephews so they would have it to look at when they are older. She also bought – or gave us – things for our future adopted child, to give to him or her later on.

She crafted notebooks for us to hand out at her memorial service, so everyone would have something to cherish from her.

“Not Talking’s” wife may want to consider doing some of these things. I send her, and everyone else dealing with cancer, a prayer of peace. –

my father found out he had cancer. I didn’t know what it was, and no one in my family

sat me down and told me he was going to die. He passed away at a hospital out of town, and I wasn’t there when it happened. When I was told, I was heartbroken.

Now, as an adult, I am crushed I wasn’t able to have the conversations with him I needed – about his boyhood, grandparents, his time in the Navy, my dreams, and just spending precious time with him. I would suggest that “Not Talking” and his wife tell their teens about her prognosis of three to four years. They deserve to know. They should have the opportunity to discuss what’s going on in their lives and allow their mom to reflect on her own life, and her hopes and dreams for her kids.

is challenging, but having a dying parent can make it excruciating. No matter how mature the teens appear, they are not ready to deal with what is coming.

The family may benefit from the Stephen Ministries program (stephenministries. org). Stephen Ministers are trained lay volunteers assigned to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life. Many Christian denominations participate.
