Born: May 24, 1946; in Streator, IL Died: Aug. 7, 2014; in Seneca, IL Thomas “Tom” F. Green, 68, of Seneca, IL, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving

family.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, August 14, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Church in Seneca with Rev. Ray Guthrie officiating. Tom’s request was casual dress only. Osborne-Nelson Funeral Home is entrusted with his arrangements.

Tom was born May 24, 1946, in Streator, Illinois to Theodore and Agnes (Keeney) Green. He married Diana “Dee” Buckle on March 15, 1989, in Ottawa, Illinois. He retired from Caterpillar after 31 years of service. After retirement he worked for Timmons Farms and helped many people with home improvements.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Seneca.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dee; six children, Janet Green of Crest Hill, Karen (Mark) Buckner of Fort Myers, FL., Terri (James) Barry of Lincoln, IL., Mark (Rebecca) Buckle of New Lenox, Traci (David) Buckle of Minneapolis, MN., and Sarah (Lee) Friedman of Skokie; seven grandchildren, Paul and Megan Barry, Shani, Noa, and Natan Friedman, Jack and Max Buckle; one brother, Joseph (JoAnn) Green of Morris; three sisters, Louise (William) Kloepping of Pearl City, Alice (Bill) Fiedler of San Antonio, TX., and Dorothy (Jim) Fiedler of Seneca; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronald Hauge, Wanda and Ed Williams, and Dean Glenn.

In lieu of flowers Tom requested that memorials be directed to St. Patrick’s Church in Seneca Capitol

JERRY J. WARNER

Born: June 8, 1935; in Junction, NE Died: Aug. 11, 2014; in Oxford, MS Jerry J. Warner, born on June 8, 1935, in McCool Junction, Nebraska, son of Don and Cleo Warner, passed away on August 11, 2014, surrounded by his wife of fifty six years and three children.

A memorial service celebrating Jerry’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford, Mississippi, on Saturday, September 20, 2014, with visitation from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, with service at 2:00 pm. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry is survived by wife, Nancy Priedeman Warner; two sons, Lee John Warner (Kathy) of Birmingham, Alabama and Michael Dan Warner (Jaime) of Lake Zurich, Illinois; a daughter, Janice Warner Brown (Jeff) of Memphis, Tennessee; five grandchildren; a brother, Don Warner (Pat) of Austin, Texas and a cousin, Robert Slagel (Marilyn) of Savannah, Georgia.

Jerry grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Benson High School. He attended college at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, graduating with a degree in Geological Engineering. Upon graduation, he married Nancy Priedeman, of Asheville, North Carolina, in 1958.

After serving his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, he started his career in Illinois with a natural gas production and distribution company. Jerry worked in all phases of the natural gas industry, including exploration, gas processing and distribution.

Jerry’s passion was always his family. An avid fisherman all his life, the sport took him to many remote and interesting places.

Other hobbies included woodworking, golf and traveling with Nancy.

Jerry was also a family historian and he researched and wrote about many former ancestors who helped settle America.

Jerry was loved and respected by his family and many friends he made throughout his life. He spent forty years active in leadership roles with the Presbyterian Church organizations both in Morris, Illinois and Oxford, Mississippi.

ALLEN J. WERSCHING

Born: June 8, 1947; in Chicago, IL Died: Aug. 9, 2014; in Morris, IL Allen “Al” J. Wersching, age 67, of Coal City, formerly Glenwood, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Morris Hospital.

Born June 8, 1947 in Chicago, Al was the son of Joseph and Margaret Sosnowski-Wersching. He was raised and educated in Chicago, graduating from Mendel High School with the class of 1965. Al would go onto serve honorably in the United

States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict.

On June 19, 1970, he married Carolyn Loseke in Spokane, Washington. After moving to Coal City, Al became a member of the Coal City United Methodist Church, and was well known for his ability for fixing things as a handyman. In his spare time, he enjoyed doing word searches, but will be most remembered for his passion for family and being a wonderful papa to his beloved grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn; two children: Stacey (Darren) Roach of Coal City and Brian (Kristine) Wersching of Ramstein, Germany; four grandchildren: McKenna, Hayleigh and Aubrey Roach and Liam Wersching; one sister: Joann (Roger) Barbero of Atlantic, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014, between the hours of 4:00pm and 8:00pm at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City.

Funeral Services will be on Friday, August 15th at 10:00AM in the funeral home with the Reverend Walter Carlson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

GOODFARM TOWNSHIP – No one knows exactly when the music stopped, but some say it’s been 40 years since anyone’s fingers danced across the keys of the Trinity Lutheran Church pipe organ.

The church, in Goodfarm Township, purchased and installed the organ 115 years ago. Dwindling congregation numbers and laborious upkeep silenced the beautiful, historic organ.

Until now.

A group of dedicated church-goers worked the last four months to refurbish the instrument. They plan to unveil their hard work Sunday during a re-dedication service.

The praise service is open to everyone – church members and non-members alike – and will coincide with the church’s 160-year anniversary. After the singing service, all attendees are invited to join the church for a catered meal.

“Anyone who loves music or organs, I think, would appreciate hearing this,” organist and lifelong church member Barb Morphey said.

The restoration was made possible through hours of volunteer work, along with countless donations and endowments from former and current church members.

About 75 percent of the organ was disassembled, cleaned and restored as part of the refurbishment process.

The organ’s keys were cleaned, sanded and sent to Wisconsin for further restoration.

For historical purposes, the original bellows and wind chest were left intact inside the organ, but a new wind chest was built and installed behind the organ.

Each of the 300 individual pipes – filled with dirt, cobwebs and even nests – were thoroughly cleaned before being re-installed.

Morris church member Lois Hahn said she cleaned coal dust from the pipes, a testament to how long the instrument has remained dormant.

“I was washing coal dust out of them because that’s the last time it was played, when there were actually little coal stoves in here,” Hahn said.

The stoves were used to heat the church before congregants switched to conventional heating, church member Paul Roeder said.

Although a handful of members helped refurbish the instrument, the church also recruited Ron Hartman, who has experience restoring pipe organs.

“The interesting thing about this organ is that it has not been tonally changed,” Hartman said. “By tonally changed, I mean the pipework that came from the factory is as it was. Never been altered.

And that’s very important.”

The organ was purchased in 1899 from Hinners and Albertson Organ Company of Pekin, Illinois. The congregation paid $500 for the instrument, a significant sum for a church of Trinity’s size, Roeder said.

Roeder and Morphey grew up attending Trinity church and said they fondly remember singing hymns accompanied by the loud, melodic

Grundy County Board appoints Nelson

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Minooka resident David Nelson shook hands and accepted congratulations from County Board members Tuesday evening after being sworn in as the county’s newest board member.

Nelson, a Republican from District 2, replaces former board member Teryl Lundeen who resigned in June when her residency within Grundy County was questioned and investigated by the State’s Attorney’s office.

In her resignation letter, Lundeen said she was resigning for “personal, family and business issues.”

After the meeting, Nelson said he looked forward to working with the board and

filling Lundeen’s shoes as he believes she worked hard for the county.

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected,” Nelson said.

“It’s important to me that Grundy County remains a great place to live, to work and to do business,” he continued.

The Grundy County Board appointed Nelson in a 10-1 vote, with Frank Halpin voting against Nelson’s appointment. Halpin did not say publicly why he opposed the appointment.

Members John Almer, John Galloway, Ann Gill, Doug Boresi and Jim Ryan were absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

In the Republican primary elections held in March, Nelson was the top vote-getter among the District 2 candi-

dates, making him a logical selection by the Grundy County Republican Central Committee.

The central committee approved recommended Nelson to the County Board earlier this month.

Nelson will serve for a brief period of about two months before facing an election. By law, the position must be included in the November general election, since Lundeen completed less than half of her term.

The winner of the November election will serve until the expiration of Lundeen’s term in 2016.

Nelson said he has lived in Minooka with his wife and three children since 2007, and has a background in business with a master’s degree in business administration. He cur-

Income, costs increase Bus sharing results in savings for D-101 “The expenses we’ve in District 101 budget saved in transportation

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Next year’s tentative budget for Morris Community High School District 101 shows a $60,000 increase in expected revenues, while expenditures show a decrease of a little more than $250,000.

The district’s tentative budget shows about $14.87 million in projected expenses across all its funds versus about $12.53 million in projected revenue.

The district has a nearly $2.3 million deficit in its Education Fund. Operating this fund on a deficit has been standard for the district since Midwest Generation closed and the district lost 35 percent of its local equalized assessed value in 2004. It then began issuing working cash bonds to operate.

The tentative budget includes a $1.4 million working cash bond. Last year, the district had a $1.45 million cash bond.

“There will be more fine-tuning before the September meeting when we have the hearing,” Superintendent Pat Halloran told the board Monday night.

The school board approved the tentative budget Monday by a 6-0 vote, with Eric Monson absent. Final budget approval is scheduled for September.

Halloran told the board that balances at the end of fiscal 2014 were higher than expected, with the education fund coming in 17 percent higher than projected and the transportation fund coming in 15 percent higher.

“The education fund has a higher ending balance mainly due to two things: we received a fifth categorized payment and lower than expected expenditures,” Halloran said.

The education fund is seeing increases in total direct revenue, the Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax, general state aid and special education reimbursement, while seeing a decrease in local sources and in the property tax levy.

The education fund is also seeing a decrease in expenditures in benefits, supplies and capital outlay, while seeing an increase in salaries and purchased services.

Halloran said a $74,740 increase in salaries represents a 1.7 percent increase, which he said wasn’t bad considering it was a collective bargaining year.

The district removed staff, but also hired a special education social worker, which Halloran said meant the district saved about the same amount of money it was paying the Grundy County Special Education Cooperative for social work services.

The district advised the Grundy County Special Education Co-op last October of the district’s intention to decentralize its special education coordinator and social worker positions.

Halloran told the board a positive note was that the local EAV was only down two percent instead of the projected five percent decrease originally anticipated.

He said General State Aid is almost making up for the EAV decline and will continue to pay at a rate of 89 percent.

“We’re happy state aid is staying at 89 percent. We looked at some scenarios were it was as low as 65 percent,” Halloran told the board.

“We are very pleased with where we are at,” Board President Dennis Best said. “We are pleased with Pat and the hard work he does on the budget.”

MORRIS – The inaugural year of the Morris schools shared busing program finished with more savings than anticipated for Morris Community High School District 101.

Saratoga, Morris Community High School District 101 and Morris Elementary School District 54 have shared special education transportation since 2002, saving the districts an estimated $4.7 million in the past decade.

The districts entered a similar agreement for regular education transportation beginning in 2013. The shared busing system was estimated to save Morris High School $115,000 over the previous year’s transportation expense, which was $395,000.

JOLIET – Bridge work on Interstate 55 near Channahon – marred with seven fatalities and more than 100 accidents over the course of two construction seasons – will likely wrap up next week.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews could complete repairs as early as next week, but the reopening of lanes won’t start until the week of Aug. 25, state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Tuesday.

Labor Day is still considered the target completion date, but IDOT officials are working to complete the work “as soon as possible” and reopen lanes prior to the holiday weekend, IDOT spokeswoman Paris Ervin said in an email.

Northbound lanes will likely reopen first, Walsh Jr. said, while southbound lanes will take a little longer because cement barriers have to be removed.

The $7.65 million construction project called for repairs to the twin 58-year-old truss bridges’ pier, abutment and structural steel, along with new decks and a paint job.

News of the bridge construction nearing completion comes just three weeks after five people, including two from the area, died as a result of a July 21 collision involving a semitrailer in the I-55 construction zone.

Last year, sudden backups resulted in 172 crashes and two fatalities between July and November. A second collision that same day resulted in the death of a sixth man.

I-55 over the Des Plaines River Bridge has been plagued with major traffic congestion during the past two construction seasons, but last month’s fatal-chain reaction crash brought the issue back to the forefront.

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said in an email statement Tuesday he was “encouraged” by the near-completion of the I-55 construction, while noting much more needs to be done to reduce the number of trucks along Route 53 through Elwood – a route often used by semitrailers as an alternative to I-55.

8 Semitrailer driver pleads

not guilty to charges related to fatal I-55 crash

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An Indiana semitrailer driver pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges related to last month’s fatal chain-reaction crash on Interstate 55 near Arsenal Road.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, faces several charges after he was arrested on charges that he caused a multi-vehicle collision July 21 that led to the deaths of five people, including one child. Another person died in a second collision.

On Tuesday, Espinal-Quiroz formally entered his not guilty plea during an appearance at the Francisco W i l l C o u n t y Espinal Courthouse. He -Quiroz is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 9. Espinal-Quiroz’s attorneys said they expect all evidence to be turned over by Aug. 26.

“Our position is that this was a tragic accident,” said Sarah Toney, one of his attorneys.

Charges against Espinal-Quiroz include falsifying a log book and failing to maintain a log book. Police also cited him for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Espinal-Quiroz has a history of traffic violations that date back to 1991 and include three speeding tickets since 2012.

His attorneys said they hope his charges are not upgraded. Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jim Long has previously said other charges, including reckless homicide, are possible as state police continue their investigation.

During Tuesday’s hearing, a judge granted a motion to preserve evidence that was filed

Aug. 7 by Espinal-Quiroz’s attorneys. His attorneys said they were concerned about evidence being destroyed during tests.

According to the motion, evidence included interviews, recordings, pictures, vehicles involved in the accident and blood and urine samples taken from Espinal-Quiroz.

His attorneys said they were not aware of any results from blood tests conducted or if reconstruction of the accident was completed. Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said crash reconstruction is ongoing, as is the state police’s investigation of the accident.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suspended the operating authority registration of Espinal-Quiroz, who does business as Espinal Trucking, according to an Aug. 8 news release.

The suspension was the result of his failure to cooperate in an investigation of the carrier’s compliance with federal safety regulations. FMCSA officials said investigators were denied access to company records by an Espinal Trucking representative.

Authorities said Espinal-Quiroz was traveling 15 mph over the speed limit at the I-55 construction site July 21 when he slammed into vehicles at 2:17 p.m.

Those who died on the day of the first collision were Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana; Vicky L. Palaciocs, 54, of Coal City; and Ulrike P. Blopleh, 48, of Channahon. Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, also was involved in the first collision and was pronounced dead Aug. 6.

A second collision occurred at 2:33 p.m. July 21 in the southbound lanes near Route 6, when one semitrailer rear-ended another. Deividas Mockus, 41, of Darien was killed as a result of that collision.

Morphey played the organ a handful of times as a young teenager and is excited to play it again, forty-some years later.

“The founders have given [the organ] to us , without any question. We have the responsibility to give it to future generations,” Morris church member Elwood Hahn said.

Aside from debuting the revamped organ, Sunday’s celebration will also mark 160 years of service for Trinity Lutheran Church, originally founded by a group of Bavarian immigrant farmers.

The group settled near Goodfarm Township sometime in the mid-1800s and held their first fellowship in 1854, according to church records.

Like the organ, the church’s sanctuary was built in 1899.

All of the church’s infrastructure is original, carefully and lovingly preserved by its members.

Morphey and four guest organists from the surrounding area will play Sunday in a service consisting almost entirely of singing hymns.

Felony dispositions announced in Grundy County MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

“The State’s Attorney’s Office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a careful consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history, and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist,” the state’s attorney’s office said in a news release.

• Jessica Baburek, 24, of Morris pled guilty to retail theft of more than $300, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to 180 days in the county jail and was placed on probation for 30 months. Baburek must pay restitution in the amount of $692 to the victim and court costs of $250. Baburek must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and report for periodic drug testing. In addition, Baburek must surrender a FOID card and firearms.

• Jacob Ellis, 26, of Wilmington pled guilty to retail theft of more than $300, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to 180 days in the county jail and was placed on probation for 30 months. Ellis must pay court costs of $247, a $250 DNA fee and restitution in the amount of $728. Ellis also must complete substance abuse counseling and submit to random drug testing.

• Corey Gibbons , 19, of Minooka pled guilty to unlawful possession of more than 10 but less than 30 grams of cannabis with the intent to deliver, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to 18 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Gibbons will be on one year of mandatory supervised

• Allan Green , 25, of Marseilles pled guilty to forgery, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to 2 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Green will serve one year of mandatory supervised release upon completion of the prison sentence and pay a $357 fine.

• Eric Johnson, 21, of Buffalo Grove pled guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on section 410 probation for a period of 24 months. Johnson must pay court costs of $247, a $100 Illinois State Police Lab fee, and a mandatory $500 drug assessment. Johnson must perform 30 hours of community service and submit to periodic drug testing.

• Rita Male , 51, of Morris pled guilty to the unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on section 410 probation for a period of 24 months and ordered to serve four days in the county jail.

Male must pay court costs of $247, a $100 Illinois State Police Lab fine and a mandatory $500 drug assessment. Male must also complete 30 hours of community service, submit to periodic drug testing, and successfully complete substance abuse treatment.

• Eugene Marshall, 63, of Minooka pled guilty to theft of less than $500, a Class A misdemeanor, and was placed on

conditional discharge for 24 months. Marshall must pay restitution in the amount of $6,810 and must complete substance abuse counseling. Marshall also must refrain from consuming alcohol and entering any premises wherein alcoholic beverages are served as a primary part of the business during the period of conditional discharge.

• Jason Mathias, 39, of Chenoa pled guilty to 2 counts of theft, both Class 3 felonies, and was sentenced to serve 4 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Mathias must serve one year of mandatory supervised release upon completion of the prison sentence.

• Shayne Pinson, 21, of Godley pled guilty to the unlawful possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to 24 months of second chance probation. Pinson must pay court costs of $250, a $100 Illinois State Police Lab fee, a mandatory $500 drug assessment, and a $250 DNA fee. Pinson must report for periodic drug testing and obtain a substance abuse evaluation and complete the recommended treatment.

• Robert Price , 39, of Minooka pled guilty to forgery, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to four days in the county jail and was placed on 30 months of conditional discharge. Price was assessed court costs of $247 and must pay a $250 DNA fee.

• Shawn Rozak, 24, of Morris pled guilty to the unlawful possession of more than 10 but

Russell must surrender his FOID card and firearms.

• Michael Torres, 51, of Minooka, pled guilty to theft of more than $500 but less than $10,000, a Class 3 felony, and was placed on 24 months of second chance probation. Torres was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2,500, court costs of $247 and a $250 DNA fee. Torres also must complete 30 hours of community service.

• Sharon Verrucchi , 28, of Ottawa, pled guilty to the unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on section 410 probation for a period of 24 months and ordered to serve 10 days in the county jail. Verruchi must pay a mandatory $500 drug assessment, a $100 Illinois State Police Lab fee and court costs of $247.

Verruchi also must complete substance abuse treatment and perform 30 hours of community service.

Klukas from SA’s office to be honored

Attorney Award for his commitment to seeking justice for victims of impaired driving crashes.

Klukas will be honored at AAIM’s Annual Benefit, scheduled for Oct. 26 in Addison, according to a news release from Helland’s office. The award is presented to someone in the State’s Attorney’s Office for his or her dedication to the needs of impaired driving crash victims and their families, according to the news release.

Klukas has worked at the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office for more than 16 years.

AAIM was founded as a grassroots organization by victims of drunken driving in 1982 in order to save lives on Illinois roadways. In 2013, more than 300 people were killed in Illinois and thousands injured and many left financially devastated due to drunken driving, according to the news release.

Is there anything more American than the state fair?

Small-town pride. Prize-winning bulls. Proud children showing off their favorite ponies and sheep. State fairs are so American, they even have a contest for the best apple pie.

Some of us go for the music.

Some go for the exhibits. Some go for the rides. But let’s be frank: A lot of us go for the food.

Fair food is a world unto itself, a secret, guilty place we visit to indulge in the foods that we would never ordinarily consume, the artery-clogging, brain-rotting, heart-stopping, certain-death foods that taste soooo good even while you suspect they may not be the healthiest things you could eat.

Only at a fair would you even think of trying a deep-fried Twinkie or Snickers bar. Only at a fair would anyone ever serve deep-fried butter. Only at a fair would anyone even consider the concept of deep-fried Coke – and yes, if you haven’t been to a fair lately, that’s a real thing.

The Illinois State Fair runs through Sunday. If you want, you can get all of your fair-food cravings of there and can also enjoy the music, the exhibits and the rides.

Or you can make your favorite fair dishes yourself. Just be sure to have a defibrillator nearby and an ambulance service on speed-dial.

Making your own fair food is easy. Just: 1. Take something that is very bad for you, and 2. Fry it.

Best wishes for a fabulous school year Spring is usually considered a time of hope and renewal.

But we can’t help but think that right now, as students get ready to return to the classroom, also is a fitting time for both.

The first day of school conjures images of students dressed in new outfits and armed with freshly sharpened No. 2 pencils, spilling off buses into classrooms decorated by teachers eager to create engaging learning environments.

There’s the promise of potential.

Starting this week and continuing into next week, students return in droves to classrooms throughout Grundy County.

They likely have a mixture of feelings churning inside as they prepare for that first day. Excitement to start the new year, maybe a little anxiety about a new teacher or starting at a new school, and a little bit of sadness at the end of summer vacation.

Whatever the feelings are that first day, we’re sure students and their parents have hopes and dreams for this academic year.

Maybe those wishes include getting straight A’s, making the team, getting the lead in the fall musical or making new friends. Maybe last year wasn’t a great year, and they’re excited about the potential that a new year brings.

We also have hopes for this academic year at schools in Grundy County.

We hope students come to class every day ready to learn something new and build on the knowledge they have. We hope they take advantage of opportunities to get engaged in their schools, whether that’s through academics, athletics or extracurricular activities.

We hope parents help their children transition into the new year by helping them get organized, talk to them daily about how their day went, lend a hand with homework and get engaged with each child’s teachers. Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom, and success at school needs to be a partnership between parent and educator.

We hope each school is gifted with teachers and administrators who want to share their love of learning with every student who walks through their doors.

We hope our local communities embrace opportunities to partner with their local school districts, whether it’s through providing mentoring or internships to students, attending football games and school plays, or contributing to a PTO. We hope state and federal lawmakers don’t burden local districts with more unfunded mandates that take money away from what schools are here to do – educate.

Most of all, we hope students, parents, teachers and the community embrace the potential a new academic year brings.

COAL CITY – Last season, the Coal City football team finished 5-5, earning a spot in the Class 4A playoffs before bowing out in a 33-14 first-round loss to Quincy Notre Dame on the road.

Although a bulk of the offensive has graduated with the loss of quarterback Brennan Shetina and receiver Nick Peters, the Coalers have reason for optimism that 2014 promises to shape up as a better year.

As with most teams, it starts up front, and that’s where the strength of the Coaler team lies, according to coach Lenny Onsen.

“Right now, I would say that the strongest part of our team is the offensive line,” said Onsen, who sports a 107-47 record in his 14 seasons as the Coalers’ head coach. “Matt Long and Curtis Smith will return as starters for us there, and they have done a great job being leaders for this group. Andrew Mathena is another guy who saw a lot of playing time that will be returning on the line for us, too.

“We have good size up front, but we are still trying to figure out where everyone fits the best.”

The big boys up front – Long is 6-foot-5 and weights between 300 and 305 pounds and Smith and Mathena aren’t far behind – will pave the way for speedster Jack Dibble to run out of the backfield. Dibble has missed most of the past two seasons with separate ACL injuries, but enters camp healthy this year.

“I have been real pleased with Jack’s comeback,” Onsen said. “He is ahead of schedule from his last ACL injury, and he looks 100 percent. I knew he was fine when we had a camp for little kids earlier this summer, and he was darting around with them. You know how you play with kids and you move back and forth real quick trying to dodge them? Jack was doing that and having a great time with them and wasn’t worried at all about how his knee would hold up.

“A lot of times with an ACL, you can still run in a straight line, but you have trouble with

the cuts, but I don’t see Jack having any problems cutting at all right now. That’s a huge plus for us because he gives us that big-play ability any time he touches the ball.”

Dibble is pumped for the season to start and to get back on the field.

“My knees feel great,” he said. “They are 100 percent. I haven’t played a full game in a long time, so I just hope to get out there and score some touchdowns. I haven’t scored one since sophomore year.

“I just know that I feel great right now. There isn’t even a hint of doubt when I try to make a move.”

Long also is excited to be blocking for Dibble.

“I get chills when you mention Jack Dibble being back,” Long said. “He is just a playmaker. If he gains 20 yards, I’m disappointed in the kid that he didn’t go farther, maybe take it all the way.

“We have looked good early on. Our goal every year is to win every game, but we learned last year that we have to take things one game at a time. You can’t look ahead.

You have to prepare for each week and win that week. So, even though you want to win every game, you have to worry about each week that week.”

Anchoring the defense for the Coalers will be linebacker Parker Czaja, along with Long on the defensive line and D.J. Budde in the secondary. Onsen, the defensive coordinator, likes things that way.

“I always try to have a returning starter on every level of the defense,” he said. “On the line, the linebackers and the secondary. They help keep things in order out on the field.

“Parker Czaja is a very good linebacker and he will be our anchor in the middle.

Matt will play on the D-line, and D.J. and Cory Jurzak are both good defensive backs that we have returning.”

“We know the defense has to be a little better this year,” Czaja said. “But, we have some good defensive backs, and we will have some huge guys on the line to help stop the run.

Minooka’s McAsey wins Big Ten 800-meter title STAFF REPORTS When Joe McAsey was on the track team at Minooka High School, his method of running the 800 meters was a thing of beauty. He would keep close to the leader until about 200 meters remained, then pick up the pace. Coming out of the final turn, if he was close, no one was going to beat him in the final 100-meter sprint.

It seems that method still works for him, as McAsey, now a member of the University of Illinois track and field team, won the title in the 800 at the Big Ten Championships in May at Purdue University.

That earned McAsey a sophomore, a trip to the NCAA Championships at the legendary Hayward Field on the campus of University of Oregon,

where he claimed second-team All-America honors by finishing 14th.

“My coach said for me to get out, getting myself in good position,” McAsey said after the Big Ten meet. “I felt great through 400. With 300 to go, a gap opened up, and I just took a chance on the inside and got back in. My coach told me to make it a 100-meter race because I can take anyone with the kick. I just trusted in my kick. I knew my coach believed in me, so I gave it all I had.”

McAsey also was a member of the Illini’s 4x800-meter relay team that finished second at the Big Ten Championships, and earned second-team All-America honors as a member of that team, which took 10th at the NCAA Championships. His efforts at the Big

Ten meet also helped the Illini take second as a team, their best finish since 1994.

Clausen getting chance over Palmer in backup role

kfishbain@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS – It is in line with what we have heard from Bears coach Marc Trestman all camp about the backup quarterback competition, but it also makes sense based on what we saw this week and in the preseason opener.

Jimmy Clausen will be the first quarterback off the bench in the team’s second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night and play with the second team.

Jordan Palmer will get the third-team reps.

“Right now, Jimmy will relieve Jay,” Trestman said Tuesday after the team’s final practice of training camp.

“He’ll have the shot after Jay comes out of the game, whenever that is. But both of them will play.”

Palmer was the second quarterback in Friday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, so it comes as no surprise that Clausen gets his chance against Jacksonville. However, in Tuesday’s practice, as

well as Monday’s, Clausen got all the reps with the second string; there was no rotating.

Despite Clausen’s ascension since joining the team in June and his two-touchdown performance against Philadelphia, Trestman said no permanent decision has been made.

“They’re both making plays. They’re competing. I’ve talked to both of them that nothing’s set in stone from last week,” Trestman said about the backup competition. “We grade them every day. We’re watching all the tape. We’re making the corrections with each of them. It’s still a compe-

tition, and they know it. We’re repping them that way.”

Injury update: Jeremiah Ratliff, Matt Forte and Charles Tillman took the day off, while Lance Briggs returned after his veteran’s day Monday.

From talking shop on the sideline with fellow outside linebackers Matthews and Mike Neal, to blowing by hapless offensive linemen in one-on-one pass rush drills, Peppers was fully engaged and looking at home in a Green Bay defense priding itself on increased versatility.

Coach Mike McCarthy seemed pleased not only with his more flexible defense but the progress of its biggest addition.

“I think Julius is doing good,” McCarthy said. “We’ve asked a lot of him – we haven’t just lined him up in one spot.

He’s getting more and more comfortable. I think Julius is having a good camp.”

Peppers called his transition to outside linebacker “smooth,” saying he made some adjustments, but the position isn’t all that much unlike end, a role he

likely will continue to fill on occasion.

Indeed, the “elephant” role Dom Capers envisions for Peppers will include him spending time at outside linebacker and end but also three-technique and, on occasion, maybe even next to Matthews. The goal is to create pre-snap confusion, and the belief is that Peppers’ size and athleticism can create conflict for opposing blockers. The Packers think using Peppers less than the Bears did, closer to 50 percent of snaps than the 80-plus percent he was deployed last season, also will help maximize his productivity.

He might be rejuvenated, but Peppers remains the same quiet, subdued personality he was during four years with the Bears.

Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari, who as a rookie had the task of blocking Peppers, admitted as much when asked

if he’s had the chance to ask his foe-turned-teammate for any pointers.

“He’s a very quiet guy,” Bakhtiari said, “and the last thing I want to do is interrupt a quiet man in his own thoughts.

If he ever came up to me, of course I would love it.”

The Packers didn’t sign Peppers to give advice to Bakhtiari, or to have him suddenly transform into a dependable locker room sound bite. They acquired him to take heat off Matthews – a job Green Bay has struggled to fill – and fortify a Capers defense that failed to pull its weight last season, when the offense was weighted down by injuries.

“It’s about maximizing my abilities to try and fit into this defense and help this defense be more productive,” Peppers said. “I’m coming here to try and help this defense, help this team.”

Bears looks to improve in Year 2 of Trestman’s offense

mpotash@suntimes.com BOURBONNAIS – The small sample size is one of the many dangers of analyzing an NFL preseason. But after six years of watching quarterback Jay Cutler with the Bears in various offenses at various points of development and under various coordinators, the eye test already reveals one discernible difference this season: Cutler is working with the wind at his back.

The Bears’ offense is just getting on its feet, like any other NFL offense in August. But there already are signs that its biggest upgrade for 2014 – being in the second year of coach Marc Trestman’s system – is the real deal, a benefit to Cutler most of all.

At this point in previous training camps, Cutler still might be looking for the instructions or trying to find a missing part. This season, he looks like a quarterback who has done this

before.

“He’s getting better,’’ Trestman said. ‘‘He understands what we’re doing. The dialogue is fast. We understand what we need to get done. Our communication is very, very good. It’s a blast to work with him on and off the field.”

Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer offered a little more detail on Cutler’s improvement in his second year in the offense.

“Jay has learned to solve his own problems on the field,” Kromer said. “He’s much quicker this year with his reads. He knew them last year – don’t get me wrong – but it’s happening even faster for him.

“He’s understanding everything he’s seeing. He’s seeing the defensive line. He’s making the calls of who we want to ‘Mike‘ (identifying the middle linebacker). He’s directing everything and then getting us in the correct call if we give him more than one play. It’s just happening at a faster pace, and that’s going to help our offense.”

Even after a slow start in the preseason opener Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles, he finished 9 for 13 for 85 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and wasn’t sacked. For what it’s worth, in the preseason opener last year, he threw an interception on his first pass and saw another drive falter because of a sack.

“Having a good camp,” Cutler said when the final practice at Olivet Nazarene was completed Tuesday. “We’re not exactly where we want to be yet, but

there’s still plenty of time. But we’re definitely heading in the right direction.”

It’s dangerous to dissect two drives of a preseason opener, but the way the first-team offense performed against the Eagles shouldn’t be totally ignored, either. Cutler’s 10-yard touchdown pass to backup tight end Zach Miller – a well-conceived and well-executed play for any time of year – was his first touchdown pass in six preseason openers with the Bears.

Where in previous preseasons Cutler futilely was trying to develop a rapport with Devin Hester – remember the infa-

mous “back-shoulder throw” flap of the 2009 preseason opener? – this time he fired a 40-yard pass to Alshon Jeffery that looked like just another big gainer, not a revelation.

After that play was nullified by offsetting penalties, Cutler threw a 10-yard pass to Brandon Marshall, and the 13-play, 69-yard touchdown drive was on. That’s another day at the office for the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers or New England Patriots. Here, it’s progress.

Whenever Cutler has been asked about emulating those offensive powerhouses, his response has been hard to refute: Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady have been in the same offense for years. We have no idea what an advantage that is.

He’s right about that. We have no idea what an advantage that is. But – even if it’s just a glimpse in the second year of Trestman’s offense – we’re about to find out.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Seeing Julius Peppers sporting a greenand-gold uniform, numbered 56 for linebacker, rushing from a two-point stance opposite Clay Matthews was an unfamiliar sight for this Chicago Football writer Tuesday observing his first Packers practice of 2014.

The grace and fluidity with which the 6-foot-7 inches, 287-pounder flew around the practice field – however impossible it still seems – was as familiar as ever.

Even at age 34, Peppers, who joined the Packers on a threeyear deal with $7.5 million guaranteed shortly after being released by the Bears in March, remains one of the game’s elite athletes and most formidable physical specimens. The Bears simply couldn’t justify keeping a player with an $18 million cap

hit whose productivity and motor waned sharply last season.

That didn’t stop one team source in April from predicting a change of scenery would lead to a big rebound from Peppers, who certainly looked the part of a player enjoying a fresh start during and after practice Tuesday.

“We’ll see about that,” Peppers said when asked if he’s too old to make an impact. “I’m not going to really get into much of discussing what I can and can’t do – we’re going to let the film speak.”

Last season’s film spoke volumes. It showed a player still capable of taking over games, as he did in monster performances at Minnesota and Detroit. But in roughly 12 other starts, Peppers was close to invisible, a tough task for a man of his incredible stature.

Talkin’ ‘The Expendables 3’

More Content Now Fans of the first two “Expendables” films will be happy to know that while most of the series’ formula – insane action sequences, tight camaraderie and wiseguy humor – is intact in “The Expendables 3,” things have also gotten more personal.

Sly Stallone again stars as Barney Ross, the leader of a rather crusty team of government-backed mercenaries. The twist is that this story has Ross bringing in a batch of young blood – new youthful recruits to replace the aging crew.

The film also introduces a big-time adversary: Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), a former cohort of Ross who has turned into his bitter enemy. Stallone and Gibson sat next to each other in a Los Angeles hotel earlier this week to talk about their roles in the film, and hint at their future career moves.

Symkus: There’s a great scene in “The Expendables 3” where Stonebanks tells his back story, and reveals why he’s become Ross’ adversary.

Sly, did you write out that whole scene, and Mel, did you stay on script?

Stallone: I just wrote a guideline, and then Mel came up with some ideas.

Gibson: I worked on the script a little bit at night, then I came in and handed the pages to Sly and [director] Patrick Hughes, and they said, “Yeah, that’s cool.” It was a theme of somebody who’s subcontracted by his government, and then thrown under the bus.

Stallone: I think what gave it some heart is that he was saying something that had some truth, and it was valid, and I don’t believe he saw himself as the bad guy. But then you bring in the aspect of Cain and Abel, and two best friends becoming the worst of enemies, because usually when you love something

In that scene, I had some dialogue back and forth with him, but the more he did the scene, the more I realized that I shouldn’t speak. So I just let him roll.

Symkus: Everyone watching is waiting for the two characters to finally go at it mano a mano, and you guys don’t disappoint.

Stallone: It’s a good fight.

You know, there are situations in sports where two rivalries get together, two teams that have done very well in their own world.

Then you wonder how they would do against each other.

When that finally happens, it becomes an event.

Gibson: King Kong vs.

Godzilla.

Stallone: That’s right.

Contact is made, and you do get hurt, and it’s freezing, and you don’t want to do [the scene] again but you have to do it again. But Mel is very fast and he’s very strong and it was great being punched by him.

Gibson: There was no actu-

al contact.

Stallone (interrupting):

That’s a bald-faced lie.

Gibson (laughing): It was kind of like movie sex. You don’t actually do it. And of course, you’re battling arthritis. But it was fun.

Symkus: If each of you could take one of your earlier characters and make him an Expendable, who would it be?

Gibson: The obvious one is the crazy cop from the “Lethal Weapon” series. But maybe that whack job from “Conspiracy Theory.”

Stallone: I think Rambo, but then he would turn around and kill them all.

That’s the down side of working with him.

Symkus: Sly, your character in the film is talking about retirement. What are your own thoughts about retirement?

Stallone: I’m not ready to sit at home and play with Pomeranians for 12 hours a day. Actors don’t want to retire; they’re usually forced to retire. And that’s sad, because you really get better as you get

older. You may not remember as much dialogue, but with the dialogue you DO remember, you’re better at it. We’re just adult children; we’re there to perform. I’ve always said that an artist dies twice.

The first death is the hardest, which is the career death, or the creative death. The physical death is an inevitability. So I think that everyone should just keep going, and I think that’s happening.

The genre is opening up, and television is providing more alternate careers or second acts in adult actors’ careers.

Symkus: Mel, are your plans leaning toward more acting or more directing?

Gibson: I think the most fun you can have standing up is directing a film. I think my gift is directing, and I’m going to pursue that. I’ve got a few irons in the fire, but it doesn’t pay to talk too much about it because industrial espionage is rife. The minute you say anything, somebody swipes the idea, and it ends up on TV. But that’s OK, too.

I’ll direct TV. TV is getting amazing.

Heavy sugar intake increases cardiac risk factors Dear Doctor K: I’ve read that sugar increases the risk of heart disease. How does it do that? Also, any advice for those of us with a sweet tooth?

Dear Reader: So far as we know, sugar doesn’t directly harm the heart. But it sure indirectly harms the heart, by promoting the following cardiac risk factors – problems that lead to heart disease: Obesity: Excess calories contribute to obesity. Added sugar is a major source of excess (and empty) calories. Overweight and obese people are at greater risk for heart problems. Today, we’re discovering that the cells containing fat make hormones that travel in the blood and have many harmful effects on the heart. The more fat cells, and the more fat in each fat cell, the higher the blood levels of these nasty hormones.

Diabetes: Sugar-sweetened drinks appear to play an important role in the increase of Type 2 diabetes. One reason for that is that the sugar is rapidly digested.

Metabolic Syndrome: The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that signals a sharp increase in heart disease

Sugar clearly impacts cardiac risk factors. But does that translate into actual heart attacks? It does. A long-term Harvard study of nearly 90,000 people found that those who averaged one sugary drink a day were 23 percent more likely to have heart attacks than people who drank no sugary drinks. The risk was even higher in those who had two or more sugary drinks per day.

Try these strategies: • Give up sugar-sweetened drinks. Quench your thirst with sparkling or tap water.

• Think fruit, not juice. Eat a piece of fruit instead of drinking fruit juice or drinks.

• Read the cereal box. Choose one with minimal added sugar.

• Read food labels. Many processed and packaged foods contain added sugars.

Bilingual population all part of living in a free society Dr. Wallace: I just returned home from Santa Barbara, California. Five of us spent a fun week there. We are sophomores at the University of Wisconsin on summer break.

This was our first time in California, and we were surprised at the number of people that spoke Spanish.

Some of the stores advertised in both English and Spanish. How many Spanish-speaking people are now living in the U.S.? – Kelly, Madison, Wisconsin Dear Kelly: According to the U.S. Census, about 32 million people speak another language in their homes. There are over 325 different languages spoken, and Spanish ranks number one, but no numbers were given.

Following Spanish as most frequently spoken in order were French, German and Italian.

The U.S. is unique and strong, precisely because of its diversity; we’re a mixture of people from every corner of this planet. Most immigrants who did not speak English in their native country do learn to speak English, but some of them never learn to speak English.

East opened with a weak two-bid, showing a respectable six-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. Then, after South overcalled three hearts, West raised spades, applying the Law of Total Tricks. With nine trumps, bid to the nine-trick level. However, in this instance, it was perhaps not the best choice. It effectively pushed North into bidding four hearts. And if West had then bid four spades, he would have given the opponents a fielder’s choice – double or bid higher.

Here, though, he allowed the prevailing vulnerability to keep him quiet.

There was a strong case for jumping straight to four spades over three hearts, to pressure North. And pressured him it would have. He might well have gone to five hearts.

Now to West’s lead. It is normal to select partner’s suit – except when you have an ace-king holding in an unbid side suit. Here, West should definitely lead the club ace. East will signal with the eight, starting a highlow (an echo) with his doubleton.

West will cash the club king and lead a third round. East will ruff it and the diamond ace will defeat the contract.

Note that after a spade lead, declarer will ruff his low spades in the dummy, draw trumps and lose only three tricks.

By Diane Krieger Spivak When summer hits Chicagoland, the heat index can wreak havoc on your landscaping.

While this summer has been a pretty rainy one, you need to be prepared for dry spells, which could come at any time.

That’s when your landscaping needs extra care to look its best.

During those dry spells grass will go into a dormant stage and turn brown, and unless you want to end up with a dry, dead lawn, mow your grass at a high level, 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Fear not, it will return to its green color with sufficient rainfall, To keep your plants from wilting give them a good soaking. A light sprinkling just won’t do. The water will just evaporate in the hot summer sun.

And on that note, always make sure to water early in the day or later in the evening so your plants can soak up the water before it evaporates.

If you normally fertilize your

lawn, don’t do it during the hot summer months. Save it for early fall, around September.

Also, save the herbicides for cooler weather.

Another step to keep your landscaping looking good is to make sure you remove weeds before they produce seeds so you don’t end up inadvertently sewing a new crop of weeds for next year.

Don’t forget your potted plants! Plants in containers lose moisture far quicker than plants in the ground. Make sure you soak them, as well.

Mulch is essential during hot weather to help plants retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. Use commercial mulch, grass clippings or straw, even on potted plants.
