Born: April 24, 1921; in Essex Township Died: Aug. 9, 2014; in South Wilmington Frank Hibler, age 93, of South Wilmington, IL, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 9, 2014, at his home.

Born April 24, 1921, in Essex Township to the late George and Cenka (nee Bajt) Hibler. Frank was a lifelong farmer in the Reddick and South Wilmington area. He also was a member of the Laborer’s Union, Local #75 in Joliet, IL. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mildred (nee Holm) of South Wilmington; sons, Frank of West Plains, MO and Larry (Tina) of Coal City, IL; daughter, Bobby of Coal City; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Julia Halpin of Cullom, IL, Dorothy Slejko of New Berlin, WI, and Emma (James) Schultz of Gardner, IL; two brothers, Harold (Elena) Hilber of Braidwood, IL and James (Diane) Hibler of Reddick; two sisters-inlaw, Josephine Hibler of Joliet and Luella Christensen of Gardner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born: May 14, 1944; in Morris, IL Died: Aug. 10, 2014; in Morris, IL Sylvia Ann (Larson) McCormack, 70, of Verona, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 10, 2014, at the Morris Hospital surrounded by her family. Born in Morris on May 14, 1944, she was the daughter of Oscar Larson and Frances Terry.

Sylvia was a graduate of the Morris High School, class of 1963. She enjoyed donating her time to Under His Wings and St. Vincent DePaul charities. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting.

Sylvia married William Warren McCormack on October 19, 1963.

She is survived by her husband William of 50 years and is also survived by her children: Don (Cynthia) McCormack of Mazon, Cindy McCormack of Morris and

ELEANOR L. PHILLIPS

Born: Aug. 14, 1923; in Mazon, IL Died: Aug. 9, 2014; in Dwight, IL Eleanor L. Phillips, age 90, of Coal City, passed away Saturday morning August 9, 2014, at Heritage Health of Dwight.

Born August 14, 1923, in Mazon, Eleanor was a daughter of the late

Forrest and Louella (Steinberger) DeGrush. She was raised and educated in Mazon and Coal City, and in 1947, Eleanor married John F. Phillips in Coal City. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City and worked as a caterer for Kit and Dahl Catering.

Eleanor will be remembered for her love of playing cards and cooking, and cherished by her canine friend Abbey.

Survivors include her sons Bob “Bubba” Phillips and Terry Phillips, and two brothers: Eugene “Peewee” DeGrush and Howard “Shorty” DeGrush, all of Coal City,and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as special friends who she played cards with.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Vernon (Dorothy) DeGrush, Hap (Louise) DeGrush, Barney (Jen) DeGrush, Wayne DeGrush, Kenneth “Curley” (Lucille) DeGrush and Lyle (Dorothy) DeGrush; two sisters: Evelyn Wendell and Gladys (Warren) Trotter and three sisters-in-law: Addy DeGrush, Margaret DeGrush and Mabel DeGrush.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 11:00 a.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Reverend Robert Noesen from Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City will officiate. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

By GEORGE LAMBOLEY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Saturday’s Morris Cruise Night not only brought in a record amount of cars that thousands of spectators walked the streets to view – but there were even airplanes.

“It was a great night. We had a flyover, 8,000 spectators and 917 cars,” said Herb Wyeth, Morris Cruise Night organizer.

Wyeth was able to arrange with pilots at Morris Municipal Airport to do a fly over to add to the event. A formation of stunt planes buzzed over the tops of downtown buildings causing the masses to crane their necks upward.

The Community Nutrition Network and Senior Services Association were on hand to sell raffle tickets as beneficiaries for the evening. The nonprofit organizations help to make sure senior citizens and people with disabilities are property fed through programs such as Meals on Wheels.

“Last year, we raised over $6,000 through Cruise Night,” said Anne Cooper, chief executive officer of the organizations. “It’s a huge opportunity for us, and we really hope we’ll continue to be selected.”

Cooper explained that fundraising opportunities such as Cruise Night make it possible for the Community Nutrition Network to provide more than 2,500 meals daily to senior citizens and those in need. Cruise Night can easily amount to 30 percent of the funding for the associations in Grundy County.

“Federal programs offer a wealth of resources, but to keep serving meals, we rely heavily on outside fundraising,” Cooper said. “Getting to be active in the community at events like this while raising money for our cause makes it feel like so much more of a group effort.”

More than $9,000 was raised through the 50-50 raffle, half of which went to the Community Nutrition Network.

The organizations sponsoring the event employed help from a large group of volunteers. While patrons looked over the automobiles and strolled through the downtown streets, volunteers prepared concessions, directed motorists to their designated areas, and kept track of the event’s data and statistics.

and LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – Police said Monday the gun a man used to kill himself recently in Sheridan is the same weapon used 12 days earlier in the shooting deaths of two Dwight women.

Former Morris resident Joseph R. Sipple, 27, shot himself June 26 in Sheridan while under a police investigation on charges of possession of stolen property. Sipple shot and killed himself during a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies.

The weapon – a .40 caliber Glock handgun – was also used to kill Donna J. Denker, 60, and her daughter Kelli L. Denker, 30, June 14 in their home, Dwight Police Chief Tim Henson said Monday.

Autopsies showed the two women died from gunshot wounds.

The weapon was recovered at the scene where Sipple took his life. The gun came from a Morris home police allege Sipple burglarized in May. When asked whether Monday’s confirmation that the same gun was used in both Sipple’s suicide and the double murder points to Sipple as the person responsible, Henson said police are “not to that point” in the investigation.

MORRIS – Alderman Brian E. Feeney is scheduled to be back in Will County court Aug. 28 for a hearing related to his aggravated driving under the influence arrest last week by Joliet police.

Feeney, 54, of the 800 block of North Street in Morris, was arrested Wednesday by Joliet police and booked into the Will County Detention Facility.

According to the Will County online circuit court records, Feeney has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony.

He also is being cited for two counts of improper lane usage and failure to make notification when causing damage to

The Illinois Valley Public Transportation Study was initiated in early 2014 to assess, analyze, and plan for enhanced public transportation options to residents in Grundy, Kendall, and LaSalle Counties.

The purpose of the public open houses are to present the study process and schedule, the draft Existing Conditions and the Market Assessment Reports, and to gather public input regarding mobility and ways to address these needs, while developing the vision for the future of public transportation in the Illinois Valley Region.

Before the most recent appointment, Feeney was on the council for 16 years, but did not seek re-election in 2007 because of a new job. But in 2008, another alderman resigned and Feeney was appointed to finish that term. In 2009, he lost the election to former Alderman Drew Muffler in a close race.

In between stints on the council, Feeney was arrested for DUI in July 2010 by Illinois State Police. He was not an alderman at the time. He was sentenced to 24 months supervision, fined and ordered to attend counseling, the Victim Impact Panel as well as DUI school.

Committee approves changes to insurance plan County will save by adding VAC

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The county will save about $13,000 in insurance fees by incorporating the veteran’s commission into the county insurance plan.

The Grundy County Finance Committee approved Monday changes to the county’s insurance trust, allowing the Grundy County Veteran’s Assistance Commission to be covered through the insurance trust for a significantly lower premium.

Ongoing court battles with former Grundy County VAC Superintendent Elton Monson have caused increases to the VAC’s liability insurance premiums and maxed out its budget for legal fees this year.

The commission is slated to

be about $35,000 over its fiscal 2014 budget, thanks to the increasing legal fees and insurance premiums.

“The biggest overages are insurance and legal fees this year,” current VAC Superintendent Ken Buck told the Finance Committee Monday.

Finance Committee Chairman John Galloway said the decision to enroll the VAC into the trust was simple.

“We’re doing this because of the insurance savings we’ll see by wrapping him into our program,” Galloway said after the meeting. “It will reduce the VAC insurance by about $14,000 and would increase the county’s payments by $800. It just makes sense.”

During previous committee discussions, Buck proposed the creation of a VAC tax levy equivalent to about .02 percent to help fund the commission and help to cover its climbing legal costs.

After approving the insurance changes, the committee

decided against the tax levy.

Instead, finance members favored using cash reserves to bridge any future VAC budget gaps.

“Personally, I don’t think we need that levy right now.

We can fund the VAC with the reserves we have and still give them a fair budget,” committee member Dick Joyce said.

“Down the road, it’s a tool we may need to use, but as far as right now, I don’t think we need it.”

The county should save about $23,000 a year by installing new light fixtures and light bulbs through a grant-funded opportunity.

The finance committee approved Monday to pay Genesis Energy about $13,500 to move forward with the energy project which involves replacing several of the outdated light fixtures within the county administration building.

“It’s awesome,” said Carolyn Buchmiller, who runs The Name in Pictures of Montgomery. She explained that she does two or three markets a month, and typically every weekend during the holidays.

Kelly Desmond, who was vending for her Geneva business, Desmond Brown Design, estimates she is in about 40 shows a year.

“I love it,” she said, of the local market. “And I’ve made friends with vendors. It’s fun.

It’s one of the more fun markets I do.”

Deb Sanders, who was busy selling her items from Fairytopiacreations, reflected on how big the market has grown.

Sanders of Morris, said she has done other shows, but she has eased up on that because she also sells in stores.

“But I will continue to do this market because it’s such a good one,” she said.

Also featured was a fundraising campaign called the Chicago Submarine Memori-

al Fund. The idea is to build a memorial in Chicago for 28 submarines that were built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and used during World War II. The submarines sailed in the area through the Illinois River, the workers pointed out.

Market co-organizer Spence-Vogel is in the process of moving to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, with her husband, Jeff, but she won’t be missing the markets. She will be opening a shop there called Bleu, but plans on making the monthly excursion to Morris for the market.

Her and Tessone already are busy working on the next markets, and an additional event Oct. 10 – a Farm to Table Dinner, which will raise money for a sensory garden for Special Connections of Grundy County.

“It was a gorgeous day,” Spence-Vogel said. “There are so many people who come from out of town, and they love our little city.”

MORRIS – The first time was the charm for Kathy Lombardi of Custer Park.

Lombardi, working from her Old Vintage Shoppe booth, was impressed with her surroundings during her debut as a vendor at the 3 French Hens French Country Market on Saturday in Morris.

“I love it,” said Lombardi, the owner of the Wilmington-based shop. “There’s a lot of people. ... Beautiful day, great setup, perfect food. ...

Wonderful.”

She may not have realized it at the time, but Lombardi was witnessing a record-setting crowd at the event, now in its sixth season. Monica Spence-Vogel, a 3 French Hens organizer along with with Traci Tessone, estimated the attendance at 5,000.

Spence-Vogel noted the market had 120 vendors, which falls about 10 short of the average. She explained that some were on vacation, however.

“Today is super busy,” Tessone observed. “I think people were really excited because the last time it rained. A lot of people didn’t make it out [for the last one], but surprisingly our vendors did really well even though it rained. It looks like shoppers are buying [today], and the vendors are happy.”

Caroline Norrington, owner of Paperjack Studio, was among the happy vendors.

“I like it,” said Norrington, who repurposes furniture at her store in Gardner. “It’s a very good market ... and it has really grown.”

Scouts learn science lessons at Airfest

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Channahon Troop 444 Boy Scout Christian Martinez flew with Scouts of other troops over the Joliet area, catching close, aerial glimpses of the Chicagoland Speedway and landmarks along the Des Plaines River.

Martinez was selected to represent his troop for the Discovery Flight at the Scout AirFest on Saturday, where Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs from several states learned about aviation and science.

“I’ve been in larger commercial airliners,” said Christian, who already had an interest in flying. “But this was small and low to the ground, so we got a better view. It reinforces my interest.”

Scouts of all ages at the AirFest learned about science, technology, engineering and math fields through demonstrations like the Discovery Flight, experiments and information stands placed throughout the university and Lewis University Airport.

Attractions included inside looks into modern and historic airplanes, tours of emergency vehicles, flaming hot air balloon burners and information on aviation and science-related fields.

“It’s a good thing for Scouts to go on and learn about science,” said Frank Garrett, whose son, Griffin, constructed a rocket only using a small water bottle, construction paper and tape, then tested it during AirFest, where it spun six feet in the air before crashing down. “STEM is the future.”

“I’d say it’s been pretty good,” Brose said, comparing the AirFest to other Boy Scout events. “I hope they have this next year.”

Ties to Morris burglary

In early May, Morris police responded to a call of a residential burglary on Jodi Court. Officers discovered firearms, jewelry, clothing and electronic goods were stolen, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Monday.

Morris police called in the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit to help process the scene.

“During the investigation, Joseph Sipple was identified as a person of interest in the investigation through a number of sources,” Dite said.

Morris worked with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department, Dwight and state police to obtain a search warrant for where Sipple was staying in Sheridan, Dite said. The warrant was executed on June 25.

“As a result, there was a recovery of a large quantity of items that were stolen in a number of burglaries in Morris and Grundy County,” Dite said.

The following day, LaSalle County authorities were pursuing Sipple on a possession of stolen property warrant when he shot himself.

On Aug. 3 authorities conducted a search of 26 acres in LaSalle County for more of the stolen items. In total, seven of the eight stolen firearms from

Morris have been recovered, Dite said.

The investigation also has shown Sipple was involved in a residential burglary of the Denker house in Dwight in August 2013. In that incident, a large sum of money was taken from the home, but no one was injured and no weapons were used, Henson said Monday.

Sipple was a former acquaintance of Kelli Denker, police confirmed last month.

The case remains under investigation by Dwight and state police. Items of evidence have been submitted to the Illinois State Police’s crime lab for testing, Henson said, but he declined to go into further detail due to the “sensitivity of the case.”

“I will continue my promise that as soon as we have more details we can release, we will,” said Henson, who said he has remained in contact daily with the victims’ families.

Another man, who has yet to be identified, was shot during the June 14 shootings but survived.

The man provided emergency medical personnel a description of the shooter at the time of the murders but “did not know the shooter,” Henson said. The man was initially hospitalized but has since been released and is in good health.

Illinois State Police Spokeswoman Monique Bond could not be reached for comment Monday.

The Women of Distinction Award is given to women who have made a difference in Grundy County and who are representative role models as leaders in their fields and communities. Nominations are being taken now, and the honorees will be chosen by a selection committee from Grundy County.

Morris Community High School’s marching band is changing with the times as it takes to the field this year in new band uniforms.

Since the band started competing, it has won several awards, including a Best Visual trophy. The visual appearance stands to improve as the band’s uniforms go from the for- Pat Halloran mer cardinal red to the newly designed maroon and gold school colors.

The Morris High School Band Boosters raised $15,000 earlier in the spring, money combined with $15,000 from the Morris Community High School District 101 budget to purchase new jackets, plumes and gauntlets.

“I think the uniforms are certainly something that was overdue,” Superintendent Pat Halloran said Monday. “The new uniforms give a new sense of pride to the students.”

On Saturday night, the boosters held the first-ever Morris High School Booster Bash at Clayton’s Tap in Morris, raising more than $5,000 toward the purchase of the rest of the marching band uniforms. That includes pants and hats, according to a news release from the Boosters.

“I am thrilled with the turnout, the money raised and the dedication and creativity of the Band Boosters – they did a great job of organizing and setting up,” Julie Buck, band booster president, said in

the release. “We have a very strong group of band parents and they are doing a great job of supporting our kids.”

Buck said the new goal is to raise $12,000 to purchase new black pants, known as “bibbers” and hats.

“We can continue using the old pants and hats, but they are old and showing wear and tear,” she said. “The new bibber pants will be a lighter-weight material and have adjustable hem pant legs.”

Halloran said the district will continue working with the boosters to help where they can.

“They’ve done a great job,” he said.

Entertainment Saturday night was local celebrity Tony Kidonakis, with Halloran as special guest singer, performing Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” while accompanied by Kidonakis. Buck said the performance was a hit.

“New director of bands, Mr. Jeff Muraida, attended with his wife, Becky,” Buck said in the release. “They were celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary and we were thrilled to have them spend it with us.”

The River Road Trio also performed, with the event featuring numerous raffles and auction items.

He made signs saying “Redskin Strong,” and he set out his display at the exit to the Morris Community High School student parking lot, which every football player who left practice by car had to pass to get home.

While he worked his stand, Sara Davy said she would look down toward him from time to time from the tennis courts where she was teaching tennis. She could see him waving his arms and calling for people to buy refreshments.

Davy said he’d do it all again. It made him feel thoughtful and proud of himself.

“They are having lifetime situations,” he said. “Not temporary, like me wanting the clubs.”

MORRIS – Twelve-year-old Eli Davy of Morris wanted a new set of golf clubs this summer, so he set out devising a plan to raise the money to buy them.

That’s when a new idea came to light.

“First I thought, ‘I want to get some new golf clubs,’ ” Davy said. “I got the idea that I could sell lemonade to football players after practice.”

As he worked on his plan, he decided to change his strategy to Gatorade and water, and he started devising a plan.

But after a little more thought, he decided he didn’t need a new set of golf clubs.

There were other people who could use the money more than he could.

“I don’t need new golf clubs, I have some, and they are just fine,” he said. “I decided I should raise money for people who need it.”

Davy decided to raise money instead for two Morris residents, Tricia “Tee Tee” Shannon and Ryan Bernickus. Both are battling cancer.

In three days, he raised $520, which he will split between the two residents.

“I thought it was great,” his mother Sara Davy said. “We’d been praying for Tricia, so he

knew about her.”

Davy said his sister, Monica, is friends with Shannon’s daughter Peighton, and Shannon was on the same Morris Redskins softball team as his mom. He heard she was diagnosed with breast cancer, so he wanted to do something for her.

“I was completely overwhelmed that a 12-year-old, little boy could think about me and Ryan over his own wants,” Shannon said. “He’s got it figured out more at 12 years old than most adults do.”

When Davy told her he was raising money for her, she said it was the first time she had shed a tear since learning of her diagnosis. Not because of what she is going through, but because Davy was performing such a selfless act.

Davy had never met the other benefactor. He just knew Ryan Bernickus’ brother, Matt, and had heard he had cancer. Ryan also was close friends with Davy’s cousin, Trevor Lines.

It didn’t matter that he didn’t know these people well.

He just knew they needed the money more than he needed golf clubs.

“Anyone would be proud of their son for doing this,” his father Eric Davy said. “But I’m not surprised; he has a

Lines of cars rolled into the south entrance off Route 47, filling the streets and purveying the illusion that everyone drives a hot rod or tricked-out muscle car in Morris. Chrome and neon lights became the norm on Liberty Street as the scents of high-octane fuel hung in the air.

As the sun began to set, many in the crowd stopped to admire Herb Carey’s wooden 1969 Buick Skylark. Carey, from Kankakee, made the drive in his wooden automobile for the opportunity to show off his street-legal creation.

“The car took me and a friend over a year to build,” Carey said. “It started out as

just a funny idea, and we just ran with it.”

The wide variety of automobiles is what attracts many, allowing many different subcultures to exist and interact on the same stretch of street.

“It’s great to see so many different types of cars and genres represented,” said Gary Holder, a first-time patron from Bolingbrook. “It’s surprising to see this much variety packed into the same event.”

“Everyone seems really relaxed and happy to help each other,” Holder continued. “It gives me a good feeling about coming back.”

OPINION What the heck happened in the Ford investigation?

As you probably know by now, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago has agreed to drop all felony charges against Illinois state Rep. LaShawn Ford, D-Chicago, and has charged him instead with a simple misdemeanor.

The original 17 federal counts of bank fraud and submitting false information to a bank each carried potential sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine – meaning Ford was essentially looking at spending the rest of his natural life behind bars for allegedly falsely obtaining a higher credit line that he wasn’t eligible for and using part of the proceeds for things unrelated to the loan’s stated purpose.

The new charge of delivering a false tax return to the IRS is calculated in the plea agreement to be a term of zero to six months.

The assistant U.S. attorney who was in charge of Ford’s case also handled state Rep. Derrick Smith’s investigation. Smith was recently convicted of accepting a cash bribe, but one of the jurors in the trial told the Chicago Tribune after the verdict that some of his colleagues struggled with what they considered to be “sleazy” federal tactics.

At the time of Ford’s indictment, the U.S. Attorney’s office claimed the investigation fell “under the umbrella of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force,” which the feds claimed was investigating “significant financial crimes.”

But an FBI report from May of 2011 shows that a mortgage broker under indictment was asked by the FBI about a loan officer who worked out of an office owned by Ford. The broker

VIEWS Rich Miller was asked if he’d ever spoken with Ford, if he knew whether Ford had other offices and if he knew whether Ford managed his campaign office out of his realty office.

The case title on the FBI form was “CSLPO,” which means “Corruption of State and Local Public Officials.”

Ford’s lawyers wrote that the federal probe was “undeniably a politically motivated investigation.”

Whatever happened, U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon deserves plaudits for reexamining this prosecution.

From the very start, the case appeared to be heavy-handed and overly charged and nowhere near in line with the financial task force’s goal of prosecuting “significant” crimes. It’s not often that a top federal prosecutor will back down, but Fardon obviously did, and that’s to his great credit.

The new charges agreed to by Ford state he overvalued a property’s rehab costs by about $23,000 when calculating his capital gains on the property’s sale, which wound up costing the IRS $3,782 in lost taxes.

“I regret this mistake,” Ford wrote to his colleagues last week, and concluded by saying he hoped the ordeal “will make me a better person and a more effective Member of the Illinois General Assembly.”

Ford obviously has his flaws, but I hope he can now move forward with his life.

Morris looking to erase memories of 2013 Redskins eager to start as season officially begins

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Ever since the final horn sounded on Morris’ 49-14 loss to Kaneland to end last year’s football season, the Redskins have been waiting for Monday, the first official day of practice.

Even though the various groups on the team have been to different camps and 7-on-7s throughout the summer, Monday was the IHSA’s official start date.

“We had a camp at the end of July,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “So this is basically an extension of that.

We are still doing a lot of conditioning and a lot of one-onone drills since we are just in helmets for a couple of days.

It’s more of a review when we run plays, but it’s good to get everyone together as a team and on the same page as far as what we want to accomplish.”

The main goal the Redskins want to accomplish in 2014 is getting that memory of last year’s 3-6 final mark out of their minds. It was the first time since 1976 that Morris had won fewer than four games and only the second time since then – 2000 being the other – that the Redskins lost more games than they won.

The team will practice with helmets for two days before putting on shoulder pads Wednesday and getting into full pads Saturday.

That, Thorson said, is when the real fun will start.

“These day these kids are really getting excited for is Saturday,” he said. “We will do mostly conditioning today and Tuesday, and then put on shoulder pads Wednesday.

That’s a little better, but the big day for these guys is Saturday. That’s when they can get in full pads and hit somebody

for real for the first time in a while.”

The Redskins hope that experience will be on their side this season. Last season, Morris was a young team, having seen most of the starters from the 2012 Class 5A state runner-up graduate. This year, Thorson said there will be 15 or more players that saw significant playing time last year in the starting lineup.

“We’re excited to have that many guys returning,” Thorson said. “It will definitely make things different than they were last year. We have a lot of guys with a year under their belts, plus they have that attitude of wanting to prove something after last year. We are hoping that will be a good combination for us.”

Meucci said that the team wants to prove it is better than last year’s 3-6 record.

“We put up a sign that said ‘3-6’ in the weight room and kept it there,” he said. “It’s a big reminder to every player on every level that we have a lot of work to do. We want to set the tone for the season from the first practice to the first game and for the rest of the season.”

And yet, as much as they

want to use last year as a motivational tool, they know this year is a new one.

“We have a clean slate now,” Layne said. “Last year is over. We have to learn from it and move on and keep moving forward from here on out.”

Coach Alan Thorson believes his players made the right choices as far as choosing their on-field leaders.

“Honestly, if you would have asked the coaches, those are probably the four guys we would have picked,” he said.

“There are six or seven guys, if we wanted to have that many, that would be good choices.

But, we tend to stick with four, and those four guys are as good as any. They will be very good leaders for us.”

MORRIS – One of the traditions at Morris Community High School is that the players choose the captains. More often than not, the players have the same idea as the coaches and everyone is happy.

This year presented a unique problem for the Redskins, though, as there were more solid choices for the honor than in a normal season.

They ended up selecting quarterback Griffin Sobol, lineman T.J. Layne, linebacker Robbie Meucci and running back/defensive back Jake Walker.

“It feels good that our teammates chose us,” Walker said.

“We definitely have more experience this year.”

Sobol was an obvious choice, as the quarterback usually is selected as a captain, but he knows it’s still an honor and a sign of respect.

“It feels like we are much closer as a team than we were last year,” he said. “The four of us have the labels as captains, but there is a lot of leadership on this team. There were a bunch of others that would have been just as good of a

Kyle Hamilton claims another 50-lap STARS feature SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – In recent years, when a 50-lap midget race is run at Grundy County Speedway and Kyle Hamilton is in the field, he is the man to beat.

Hamilton, an aspiring elementary school teacher from Danville, Indiana, was able to follow his lesson plan into victory lane after chalking up his second D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget feature win of the season in Saturday night’s “Border Battle” that was co-sanctioned

by USAC. All five of Hamilton’s wins in a midget at Grundy County Speedway have come in 50-lap features. Furthermore, it was Hamilton’s second straight “Border Battle” win and the third consecutive season that Hamilton won a USAC race at the 1⁄3 mile paved oval.

Hamilton was absent from last week’s STARS race after losing an engine during the running of the Bob Tattersall Challenge two weeks ago. On Saturday, Hamilton had to rely on the Esslinger engine that was under the hood of the car that Hamilton previously had piloted in the STARS season opening race in May. From the car rolled off of the trailer, the team didn’t miss a beat. After

setting the top speed in both hot lap sessions, Hamilton followed it by setting fast time during qualifications with a lap of 14.176 seconds. Hamilton had to line up in the fourth spot at the start of the feature because of the inversion. That put Kyle O’Gara on the pole alongside STARS National Midget point leader, Austin Prock, on the front row.

As the green flag dropped, it was clear the drivers were not going to waste any time getting to the front despite the 50-lap distance. As the frontrunners crossed the line at the completion of lap one, the challenge for the top spot became a threewide border battle between Indiana natives Prock and O’Gara on the outside and Illinoisan Mario Clouser on the inside.

Clouser and Prock swarmed O’Gara on both sides going into turn one and continued their side-by-side battle for the lead going into turn two when Clouser spun down the back straightaway, bringing out the night’s first caution. O’Gara’s night came to an end while Clouser restarted from the tail of the field.

On the restart, Prock built a sizable advantage over Hamilton. Over the next 45 laps,

Baker claims seventh late-model win at Grundy Speedway SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Ricky Baker thanked his crew after his seventh late-model feature win Friday night at Grundy County Speedway for adjusting a car that almost spun out during qualifying.

He also owed a debt of thanks to the yellow flag, without which he would have had a hard time getting to victory lane. The yellow allowed Baker to close the gap on leader John Nutley.

Nutley opened a big advantage after taking the lead from James Gregait on Lap 14. It was typical of a few other races this season where Nutley has led the most laps – but not

the last one. Things dramatically changed this time when Gregait went around Eddie Hoffman in turn four on Lap 20. The yellow came out, and both were sent to the back.

Suddenly, what seemed to be a runaway turned into a bumper-to-bumper battle.

Still, Baker wasn’t sure.

On Lap 25. Nutley dropped in right behind him and hung with Baker for two laps, but eventually fell back by about five car-lengths. Baker beat Nutley to the finish line by 0.822 seconds. Billy Knippenberg was third, followed by Larry Schuler, Chris Cooling and fast qualifier Pat Kelly.

Ricky Wilson made the outside groove work to perfection in passing the top two cars en route to his first pure stocks victory of the season.

Wilson spent several laps working on second-place Alex Gay before passing her via the upper groove. He then tracked down leader Nick Clubb and made the winning move just four laps from the finish.

At the finish it was Wilson by 1.286 seconds over Mike Yuris. Clubb, Zach Sontag, Gay and James Gross completed the top six. Pure stocks heats were captured by Austin Blackwell and Mikey Slabenak. Justin Mikel was the fast qualifier.

Street stock points leader Eddie Ligue made it five feature wins on the season with a near wire-to-wire run. Ligue took the top spot from Rob Scamen on Lap 2 and never was headed. John Senerchia came the closest, easing past Jake Bradley for second and staying within 0.399 seconds of Ligue at the checkered flag.

In the Mid-American main, points leader Tommy Knippenberg won for the eighth time in a runaway over Jason Hendron, Matt Clemens, Kevin Murphy, Joe Vinachi and Jeremy Clubb.

Seinfeld’s new venture: Coffee talk

By EMILY YAHR The Washington Post Jerry Seinfeld could have taken his gazillion-dollar “Seinfeld” fortune, gone merrily on his way and never worked again, but he decided two years ago to launch the Web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” on Sony’s Crackle. com.

The show is exactly what it sounds like: Seinfeld in conversation with his funniest celebrity friends, including David Letterman, Tina Fey, Mel Brooks, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart, Aziz Ansari and Sarah Silverman, among others.

The series, which is in its fourth season this summer, has collected more than 40 million views and an Emmy nomination.

How has it done so well? Obviously having the name “Seinfeld” attached doesn’t hurt. But the best explanation is that it’s a talk show without actually being a talk show.

If that sounds like Seinfeld-ian nonsense, well, that’s what it is. Following tradition, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” is basically a show about nothing – except cars and coffee, sort of.

Every Thursday at noon, a new episode (generally about 15 to 20 minutes long) is posted, each kicking off with Seinfeld

asking a famous pal to join him for a cup of joe.

Then they take a ride in a classic car to a coffee shop and talk about everything from comedy to careers to kids to hobbies. It’s essentially eavesdropping as stars chat, so you learn all kinds of fun facts. For example: Jon Stewart has a three-legged dog. Tina Fey doesn’t have a driver’s license. Every night, Mel Brooks goes to Carl Reiner’s house where the two comedy legends eat dinner on TV trays and watch “Jeopardy!”

As it’s always an entertaining peek behind the scenes, the question becomes “When is Seinfeld going to take the show to television?” At this point, we know the drill: First comes the Web show, and if it’s really good, it’s picked up by a network for true stardom. Even in a world where Netflix reigns, we’re still ingrained to think of television as the ultimate platform.

Seinfeld’s answer, however, has always been the same: Never. And that’s probably for the best. Everyone knows that talk shows can have a rough time in the television world. Daytime and late-night TV are littered with failed ventures (“Bethenny,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Totally Biased,” “Katie,” to name a few) for many reasons. Network interference. Hosts and producers

having different visions. The scramble to fill an episode every day or week.

Plus, Seinfeld isn’t a fan of modern-day talk shows, calling them “promotional vehicles for the industry.”

“They’re not talk shows, per se, they’re kind of setup talk shows – ‘I’m gonna ask you this, then you say that,’ “ he told the Hollywood Reporter. “The shows are pretty cheap, too, so until it becomes an unworkable business model, I don’t think you’ll see change.”

Network executives could promise to stay out of Seinfeld’s way, but the Internet still has much more freedom than broadcast or cable television could offer. With the Web show, there’s no pressure about when an episode needs to run, or for how long. No one gives notes. There are no pre-interviews.

Seinfeld can do whatever he wants, however he wants, and the result is a genuinely fascinating conversation.

The most important point, though, involves the comedians themselves. In front of a studio audience, they don’t open up the way they do in the relaxed atmosphere of Seinfeld’s low-key production.

That, in a nutshell, is why “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” works. And, as Seinfeld has learned through the years, you don’t mess with success.

Son’s football concussion is a serious matter Dear Doctor K: My son got a concussion playing football. His doctor said he shouldn’t play again until his symptoms have completely disappeared. What symptoms should we be looking out for?

Dear Reader: A concussion follows a physical blow or impact to the head that disturbs the way the brain works. While it sometimes causes a person to temporarily lose consciousness, it doesn’t always do that. It also can cause other symptoms that indicate the brain has been injured – and those can become apparent days or weeks after a person who has been knocked out regains consciousness. A concussion is a serious injury, more serious than we used to think. Most people recover quickly and completely from a concussion. However, as long as even subtle symptoms of a concussion last, the brain remains especially vulnerable to another injury. As your son’s doctor advised, it is very important that your son not return to playing football, or any contact sport, until he is completely

Not only can a second concussion that occurs before the brain recovers from the first slow recovery; it also can increase the risk of long-term problems. It’s rare, but repeat concussions can also result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage, even death.

Concussion symptoms can be wide-ranging. As you might expect, a concussion can cause physical symptoms such as headache and dizziness. But a concussion can also cause problems with thinking, sleep and mood.

Some symptoms may appear immediately and go away quickly. Others may not emerge for days or even weeks, and may last for a few months. Look out for the following concussion-related symptoms: Headache; nausea; dizziness; fatigue; blurred vision; difficulty thinking, paying attention,

remembering and learning; depression; irritability; poor sleep; frustration; and poor focus.

There is no specific medicine used to treat a concussion. The best treatment is rest from physical and mental activity. Watch your son closely and contact his doctor if his symptoms get worse or if his behavior changes. Ask the doctor if your son should be excused from gym class or if he needs to limit his activities during recess.

You may need to adjust your child’s schedule and schoolwork as well. As for returning to sports, the timing is different for every child. Symptoms often go away within a couple of weeks, but some children may take months to get better.

Once you believe your son’s symptoms are gone, get his doctor’s OK before you let him back on the gridiron.

Mom’s decision is sound Dr. Wallace: I’m a 14-year-old girl. I’m a good kid, get good grades and earn my spending money by babysitting.

I usually spend it for clothes and entertainment. I’m glad my mom does not require me to save any money because everything is expensive these days and I need it all.

My mom and I were shopping yesterday, and I was looking for a lightweight jacket. The one I picked out was really cute and fit just perfectly, but my mom wouldn’t let me buy it. I think that since I earn my own money for clothes that I should get to pick the ones I want.

Dr. Nameless: Parents who constantly compare their child to a friend or relative’s child are making a big mistake.

They are trying to encourage the student to do better, but this method is usually not effective. The reason is that the message is negative and translates to “You are not as good as your cousin.”

Wiser parents guide their children in a positive manner, giving praise and encouragement whenever possible.

Talk with your parents and do your best to explain how you feel. If they continue comparing you to your cousin, continue to do your very best, but allow their words to fall on deaf ears.

That is a good thought to keep in your mind when it seems that you are destined to end a bridge deal with a minus score. Fight on with stubborn fortitude.

In this deal, declarer does not face overwhelming odds, but the thought of being in four hearts with only seven trumps instead of playing in five clubs with nine trumps would daunt some players.

This layout arose during a pair event, where scoring the extra points from a major-suit contract can be very profitable.

Against four hearts, West starts with three rounds of spades. How should declarer continue?

South’s three-spade cue-bid asked his partner to bid three notrump with a spade stopper.

Yes, five clubs is much easier to make. But if South can bring home four hearts for plus 420, that will beat those declarers in five clubs scoring only plus 400.

South apparently has 10 top tricks: four hearts, one diamond and five clubs. But to run the clubs, he must first draw trumps.

And the six missing hearts will break 4-2 more often than 3-3 (a priori 48.45 percent versus 35.53 percent). And even if hearts are 3-3, South will always have a diamond loser. So, rather than ruff at trick three, South should discard a diamond.

If West persists with a fourth spade, South ruffs with dummy’s heart ace, draws trumps and claims.
