“It’s a similar budget to last year, but not encouraging,” Halloran said last week.

The education fund is classified by Halloran as a major fund within the budget. The fund is expected to see an overall 2.1 percent decrease in revenue, according to district calculations.

The expected decrease is a result of several factors: a $155,365 drop in total direct revenue; a $146,080 drop in property tax levies; a $25,000 drop in corporate personal property replacement taxes; a $81,636 drop in special education reimbursement; and a $184,283 drop in local sources.

“Revenue from local sources is not nearly as much as last

year,” Halloran said.

The decrease would have been more severe if not for a $322,168 increase in general state aid. State aid follows a year behind the equalized assessed values, or property tax revenue, which Halloran said appears to be leveling out.

“State aid goes up as the EAV goes down,” Halloran said.

As for expenditures, the education fund will see a $149,183 increase in salaries, which is standard because of teachers’ salary scheduling, which factors in tenure and advanced education. There will also be a $1,410 increase in benefits.

The district expects a $117,476 decrease in purchased services, a $8,196 decrease in

supplies and a $5,704 decrease in capital outlay.

Halloran requested the school board meet next month to get ahead on its financial projections for the next few years. Halloran said last week the district soon should discuss ways to address its working cash bonds situation.

“We can’t take a $300,000 to 400,000 hit each year in the education fund,” Halloran said last week.

Halloran said it looks as if the state might shift the responsibility of paying pensions to the districts as a result of the state budget reform.

He said it looks as if it will be spread out over 12 years with an annual increase in cost to districts.

“Dr. [Superintendent Pat] Halloran, we appreciate all you’re doing to balance this budget,” Board President Denny Best said. “It’s complicated.”

Fiscal 2016 revenues are down .07 percent, or $86,861, from the fiscal 2015 amended budget submitted in June. But expenditures are down 5.02 percent, or $724,451, compared to the 2015 amended budget.

Mazon resident has added to his ninja warrior training course

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – In a small Mazon backyard, a structure has risen, aimed at training warriors.

Ninja warriors.

Dan Matzen of Mazon created a ninja warrior training course, with a 17-foot warped wall, a salmon ladder and a rolling log that spins with the competitor holding on for their life in an effort to practice to get on the “American Ninja Warrior” television show.

The course will be the home for the second annual ninja warrior competition to benefit Cure It Foundation. Matzen created the course last year in order to help him qualify for the show, which he did not make, but is still working toward.

“We learned a lot last year.

There were too many stages, and it wasn’t difficult enough,” Matzen said.

Since the Sept. 11, 2014 event, he has added more obstacles to each stage. The third is the most difficult and can only be achieved by advanced athletes, because the obstacles become increasingly more difficult. Matzen previously was a tester for the obstacles on the show, and his dream is to end up on the program.

“It went really well last year,” Dan Polizzi of Oswego said. “We’re making it better with little changes here and there.”

Polizzi, a 6-foot 2-inch man of muscle who works as an Aurora firefighter, competed on the TV show with a 6-foot-6 Streamwood firefighter, Brandon Mears. The two were nicknamed the Towers of Power and made it to the semi-finals in Kansas City before Polizzi was knocked out of the competition.

Polizzi said he has seen a lot of kids entering the various ninja warrior training gyms, and he’s excited to be able to help them. Matzen has added

“We’ve had a lot of kids interested and there is only about five spots left,” Matzen said.

He said the kids will break into four or five groups and work with adults who will teach them how each obstacle works and how they can complete it. The main competition Sunday will be for adults who think they have what it takes to complete all three stages.

This year’s competition also will be open to spectators who want to watch the event.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The public filled the basement of the Morris Area Public Library Monday night to protest the firing of children’s librarian Carol Hutchings, during the regular board meeting.

Hutchings was terminated after 37 years of employment, two years before her full retirement on July 27, by Library Director Lorene Kennard. Kennard said she could not comment on personnel and declined to give a reason for the termination.

Before the meeting Hutchings said she wants her job back.

“I want my job back. I’ve been very dedicated for 37 years,” she said. “I have a mission as a children’s librarian, and I want to continue to encourage kids to read.”

As of press time, the board still was in executive session and had made no public comment regarding Hutchings’

termination.

“I was born here, I was raised here, I live here and I plan to be buried here,” Morris resident David Perry said during public comment. “The rumor mill churns awful quick here.”

He said he fears the firing is a strategy based on the library’s budget and that it is a way to prevent her from continuing to work and adding to her pension.

Sue Morse, president of the Friends of the Morris Library, said she’s had several members call and cancel membership. She said members are important to the library as they provide volunteer services.

“Members are sad, mad and feel disenfranchised,” Morse said.

The 127 members of the community who signed in support of Hutchings when they entered the meeting, weren’t all from Morris.

Debra Warning of Minooka

said she has brought her children, who are now in college, to the Morris Library where they viewed Hutchings as “their librarian.”

“Carol is honest, she has integrity and she is caring,” Warning said to the board.

To the public she said, “If you don’t get what you’re looking for tonight, you are welcome to come to Minooka and Channahon libraries.”

Several other members spoke out in support of Hutchings during the public portion, most asking why she was fired, and asking the board to reconsider before the going into executive session to discuss personnel matters.

A petition has been circulating on Facebook, created on change.org, asking for Hutchings to remain in her position.

As of press time, more than 1,500 had signed it.

Morris man self-publishes humor book If you go

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Albert Sloan and his wife, Pixie, stood at their kitchen counter Monday while their grandkids spent a last bit of summer vacation splashing in the backyard pool of their Morris home.

Pixie Sloan couldn’t hold back tears as she said how proud she is of Albert Sloan for being a great husband, father, grandfather and teacher.

“He succeeds in everything he does,” Pixie Sloan said.

And now, a dream of Albert Sloan’s has come to life.

His book, “What God Reads in His Spare Time,” was released July 10 and is available online through Amazon.com.

“This is one more thing for him to succeed at,” Pixie said.

The book is a collection of 40 humor articles Albert Sloan wrote since spending time in the hospital a few years ago.

During his stay, he decided it was time to pursue something he put on the back burner for years.

“I thought, ‘If this works out – if I get out of here – what do I do?’ ” Sloan recalled.

In the early 1980s, he submitted picture ideas and dabbled in writing contests over the years, but was never able to put the necessary time into being a published author.

He said writing is therapeutic for him and he’s not doing it for the money. The average self-published author sells 200 copies, Albert Sloan said.

“I guess my goal would have to be 201,” he said.

Pixie Sloan said the book is about sharing his life and making people laugh.

“I’d like people to see this part of him,” she said. “He loves to make people laugh.”

A book signing is scheduled for Saturday at Montage Wine Bar and Spirits in Morris.

Sloan hopes people will attend to enjoy each other’s company, visit and talk about the book.

“It pairs best with alcohol, too,” he said.

The club decided to donate the proceeds of the 50-50 drawing from the event held in July to the Disaster Relief Fund at Berkot’s Super Foods in Coal City.

Berkot’s has agreed to double any donations up to a total

of $10,000, according to a news release from the Morris Lions Club.

Because the winner of the 50-50 did not claim half of the funds raised, the Lions were able to donate a total of $686 to Berkot’s to help the victims of the recent tornado.

People with oral, head and neck cancers find support

Bill McGrath, 68, of rural Minooka, originally dismissed the symptoms of his tonsil squamous cell cancer.

“A lump grew on the side of my neck,” McGrath said.

“I kind of dismissed it at first.

I always had problems with my ears, and I thought it had something to do with that.”

DiVenere was McGrath’s physician and recommended surgery and radiation therapy. Overwhelmed with the diagnosis, McGrath said he immediately wanted to talk to the head and neck cancer survivors in the support group, where he found information and support.

McGrath’s cancer was di-

agnosed one year ago. He had surgery in August, then 37 radiation treatments after that.

The cancer appears to be gone, but the effects of treatments are not.

Along with dry mouth and some difficulty eating certain meats, occasionally a bone shard will appear through McGrath’s gums. Still McGrath said he is well enough to cut his own grass – all 3½ acres of it – and fish and trap shoot

Papillary cancer survivor Barton Vest, 73, of Gardner said he was one of the group’s charter members. Vest’s cancer was diagnosed in 2011, after he had trouble swallowing.

Vest underwent two surgeries – one for each side of his neck – and now has an ear-toear scar. He then was given radioactive iodine tablets to destroy any remaining cancer cells. But the cancer returned.

Another surgery and 33 radiation treatments later, Vest said the cancer appears to be gone. However, Vest now also has a dry mouth, no feeling in his jaw and trouble swallowing. That’s why the support group is valuable.

“With the support group, everybody had the radiation, and you’re talking to people who know what it’s like,” Vest said.

In addition to the otolaryngologist and pathologist, treating head and neck cancers may require medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, prosthodontists, dentists, plastic surgeons, dietitians, physical therapists and speech therapists.

DiVenere said recovery can take six months to a year – especially with advanced cancer – so patients can feel medically overloaded. This is why a support group is a good idea, he said.

MORRIS – Treating cancers of the head and neck can be difficult and side effects may be lasting.

Sharon Bernico, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers radiation therapy nurse, said some cancer survivors have little visible evidence of their surgeries and radiation treatments. Others, she added, have had radical resections or skin problems because of the radiation.

“To go through these cancers is tough,” Bernico said. “I think it’s one of the toughest to go through, but it usually has a wonderful outcome.”

Bernico and speech therapist Ali Bute are co-facilitators of the Oral and Head and Neck Cancer Support Group at Morris Hospital. It began a year ago at the request of Bernico’s patients.

“Just about everyone comes away from treatment with problems with swallowing, dry mouths and foods they will never eat again,” Bernico said. “I think the guys wanted to know there were other people out there who were going through the same thing they were.”

All members of the support group are men. The National Cancer Institute states that twice as many men are affected, but Bernico said she sees a much higher ratio at her clinic.

According Dr. Scott DiVenere of ENT Surgical Consultants of Joliet and Morris, these are cancers that originate in any areas of the head and neck except the spine and skull. They include malignancies of the thyroid; salivary glands; mucosal surfaces in the mouth, nasal areas and throat; the tongue; voice box; and bone – even muscle and skin if they go deep enough.

“Anything that causes chronic irritation or inflammation is a risk factor for the typical head and neck cancer,” DiVenere said. “Major risks are alcohol, tobacco, and especially the combination of the two, as well as chronic acid reflux.”

Poor dental hygiene also can increase the risk of these cancers, he said, as can the human papilloma virus.

Carolyn loved to play cards and enjoyed working in the yard. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

BUSINESS Youth program needs students MORRIS – It wasn’t all that long ago that I was an involved high school student full of enthusiasm to change the world.

During that time, when presented with an offer to participate in an organization, volunteer, or attend a workshop or camp, I jumped at the chance.

I truly wanted nothing more than to be involved and learn as much as I could about the world around me.

I know there are local high school students out there with the same attitude, and I am looking for them!

Last December, the Community Foundation of Grundy County started a Youth Philanthropy group with students from Seneca Township High School.

The purpose of the group was to engage area youth in philanthropy, to educate them on the nonprofits in and

around Grundy County, and to instill the importance of giving.

In the end, the students were able to grant $5,000 to area nonprofits, making an impact on four very deserving organizations.

Like most projects or programs the goal is to continuously make them bigger and better.

To help get new ideas flowing, our summer intern and I attended a two-day youth philanthropy conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, early this summer.

The conference was a great way for us to network with other youth philanthropy programs in the Midwest, as well as an opportunity to see how other programs are structured.

This year, we would like the Youth Philanthropy group to be comprised of teens from each town in

Grundy County.

The group will plan to meet on the third Sunday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning on Sept. 20 and continuing through May at the Community Foundation office in Morris.

Although the group will focus on similar aspects of philanthropy as last year, we also will be digging deeper into the nonprofit world and grant writing. In addition, we may also visit some area nonprofits and get involved with some service projects.

The Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy group is open to high school students who either live in Grundy County or attend one of the following schools: Coal City High School, Gardner-South Wilmington High School, Minooka Community High School, Morris Community High School, or Seneca Township High School.

It is preferred that students be either sophomores or juniors; however, freshmen and seniors who are interested still are able to participate.

I am looking forward to growing this program and believe it has the potential to make a large impact on Grundy-area nonprofits for years to come.

Leadership program provides insight to museum displays MORRIS HERALD–NEWS CHICAGO – The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program Class of 2016 held a three-day media relations seminar in July in Chicago, and the class included Dan Mehochko of Mazon, a business relationship manager with GROWMARK, according to a news release.

After touring the “Farm Tech” exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, class members met with Kurt Haunfelner, vice president of exhibits and collections, and Patricia Ward, director, science exhibitions and partnerships, to exchange ideas on telling the story of modern agriculture.

Morris eager as football season begins

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The numbers keep getting smaller on the white board in Morris Community High School’s weight room.

Since the past season’s loss to Peoria in the Class 5A quarterfinals, the Redskins have been counting down to this season’s opener.

On Monday, the official first day of practice as set by the IHSA, the number displayed was 18.

“I was telling the guys before practice today that I can remember when that number was in the 250s,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “It’s down to 18 now. We were in the weight room the Monday after we lost to Peoria.”

It’s that dedication Thorson likes to see out of his team as it went through drills in just helmets Monday. In accordance with IHSA guidelines, the team will put on shoulder pads Wednesday and will be in full gear Saturday.

“The first couple of days will be spent reviewing stuff,” Thorson said. “As much as these guys do over the summer with the 7-on-7s, weighlifting and conditioning, they would like to be able to come out here and hit. But we’ve had the last 10 days off, so it’s kind of nice to get out here and get refreshed on everything.

“Even though we’re only in helmets, football has officially started. The intensity is a little higher already than it was during the summer. The kids are anxious to get going, and I like that they are eager to get to that.”

The Redskins are 18 days away from their season opener Aug. 28 at home against Chicago Austin Polytechnic, and they are eager to see what the upcoming season holds.

The team captains will be seniors Jackson Shannon, Ryan Niewinski and Nathan Guth as well as junior Keagan Sobol.

“We have good leaders,” Thorson said. “The kids voted for them. We as coaches have the final say, but we agree with the choices the kids made.

“Another thing that I have liked about this group is that we had outstanding attendance at all of the stuff we did over the summer, whether it was 7-on-7 or weightlifting or camps or conditioning. During the summer, the groups were kind of split up. The skill guys

went to 7-on-7s and the linemen were in the weight room a lot. Now, we can pick up in the intensity and finally fit all the pieces together to see how

it looks as a whole.

STAFF REPORTS John Nutley had an uphill battle ahead of him on Lap 5 of Friday night’s late-model feature at Grundy County Speedway.

Nutley was running fourth at the time, and the three cars ahead of him were pretty fast.

Then, the hill suddenly disappeared – not in a puff of smoke, but in a cloud of dust, rocks, dirt and parts.

Second-place David Einhaus got into leader Larry Schuler, turning him around.

Third-running Eddie Hoffman was collected, as was fifthplace Brandon Clubb.

He threaded the needle with his No. 96 between Schuler and

Einhaus as carnage ensued and the yellow flag flew. When they restarted the race, he was declared the leader.

Nutley put on a power show over the final 25 laps, running away from the field to record his second victory of the season.

Driving his battered No. 8 off the track, Hoffman went directly to his pit, where his crew feverishly went to work.

Hoffman started in the back and, lap by lap, seemed to get faster.

Eventually he took the high side, where he passed several cars until he reached second-place Scott Koerner with four laps remaining.

Hoffman used the high side to pass Koerner as well, and

although he was six-plus seconds behind Nutley at the end, took home a runner-up finish.

Koerner held on for third ahead of Einhaus. Joe Vinachi, in his late model debut, was fifth, and Schuler sixth.

Cheryl Hryn claimed the 33-lap Candyman Special for street stocks, when apparent winner Chris Woodall was disqualified for a carburetor violation.

Woodall beat the field by plenty, but Hryn still ran an impressive race, holding off a late charge by Jake Bradley, while Rita Fields, Seth Blommaert and Christy Penrod finished behind them.

Tom Knippenberg continued his second half resurgence, capturing his fifth

victory in the Mid-American feature.

Knippenberg nosed out Kevin Murphy by 0.676 seconds.

Well behind them, Kenny Benson finished in third ahead of Luke Baldwin, Jim Olson and John Ventrello.

Bryce Leake eased to his first 4-cylinder feature win of the season, topping Jim Gross by 0.547 seconds. Derek Vertheen, Ricky Wilson, Alex Gay and Kyle Royster completed the top six.

Morris tryouts: Any boys or girls interested in playing on the Morris High School golf team should know that the preseason team outing has been

rescheduled for Wednesday and Friday.

Golfers will play nine holes each day, and tee times will begin at 7 a.m.

Wood not alone on the team in feeling upbeat

By TONI GINNETTI For the Chicago Sun-Times CHICAGO – Reliever James Russell can tell stories about Lou Piniella’s days as the Cubs’ manager.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo can remember when the Cubs won 61 games in 2012, a total they already have surpassed this season.

Reliever Travis Wood has a résumé that includes being the Cubs’ All-Star representative in 2013 with a 9-12 record and 3.11 ERA after receiving the lowest offensive support (2.79 runs per game) of any major-league pitcher.

For those three and shortstop Starlin Castro, who are the longest-tenured Cubs, the old days weren’t exactly good ones. It’s why these days of winning and contending mean so much to them.

“It’s amazing to see how things have progressed over the years and with the guys we have now,” Wood said. “It’s still a young team, but they

brought in some veteran guys who are really pushing the young guys and showing good examples. We’re playing good ball right now.”

Wood had to accept his own change, moving to the bullpen after he struggled in the rotation.

“Going to the bullpen was a bit of a transition, but it’s still taking the ball when they ask you to and trying to get hitters out, and that’s kind of the way I’ve tried to approach it,” he said.”

Wood said winning has helped his transition and helped to make this August the kind he hoped for.

“There’s just a different feel all the way around, especially this time of year,” he said.

“You’re getting late in the season, and normally we were not doing well right now in years past.

“To be right there this year, guys are still upbeat and looking forward to coming to the ballpark and getting ready to play the best we can.”

I feel that when kids move out, they should take all their belongings. Kelly thinks I should keep the 10 to 15 trophies she won in beauty pageants when she was younger.

I’d like to turn her bedroom into a guest room where visiting relatives can stay, but I’m having difficulty getting my daughter to take all her stuff.

Although she has grown out of her childhood trophies, she expects me to hold onto them. I suggested she pack them up and store them in her attic so she can show her children her accomplishments one day. What do you think? – Beauty Queen’s

Dear Abby: A friend of mine and I have exchanged birthday cards for many years. Several years ago, she started sending me two cards each year – one on my birthday and another five or six months later. After a couple more years passed, the “second date” became the only card she sent.

I know I should have said something, but I didn’t want to embarrass her. This year on my “birthday” she even called to wish me a happy

one.

Is there anything I can do now? My REAL birthday is coming up soon, and I feel bad that I didn’t nip this in the bud in the beginning. –
