MORRIS – “Create more, and do better every day!” is a motto Principal Kelly Hussey developed to remind us all of the importance of continuous improvement and making an impact daily. Signs throughout our building contain this and a multitude of other motivational quotes – all designed to keep our mission as a school and community alive. The MCHS mission statement is anchored by the phrase: “The goal is to provide each student the opportunity to achieve to his/her fullest potential.” I was reminded again last week how many important opportunities happen beyond the walls of Morris Community High School.

My job takes on a different vibe every year. Many of the responsibilities of leading a school district are cyclical.

This summer, the June tornado impacted our family, so my focus and routine was naturally much different. I appreciate the hard work of the MCHS staff in keeping the ship on course.

I needed something to “jar” me back into leadership mode.

It turned out to be five MCHS students who took advantage of an opportunity

presented to them that could have an impact on their future.

The educational and business communities in Grundy County have developed a positive working relationship over the years. Internship and employment opportunities are growing as schools and employers work together to prepare students with the skills needed in the workforce. This spring, Dresden Generating Station teamed up with MCHS and created a unique learning opportunity.

Dresden Station Vice President Shane Marik and MCHS graduate Leah Kutches from the human resources department presented the idea of a safety project related to the timing of stoplights in Morris. The project included a presentation to the Morris City Council and follow-up work depending on the outcome. MCHS teachers Ryan Hansen, Jodi Brodbeck and Craig Ortiz volunteered to recruit and lead the students in this problem-based learning

experience.

Jason Jurak, Max Dudley, Alyssa Trobl, Dawson Moore and Ryan Wills made an excellent presentation Aug. 3 to the Morris City Council explaining their purpose, data they discovered and recommendations moving forward. The council asked questions, discussed the data and suggested the students attend a committee meeting to further explore the topic.

A meeting with the Illinois Department of Transportation also is being arranged. Not bad for a group of high school kids!

The “jarring” moment for me was the first slide of the presentation where the students used Principal Hussey’s motto “Create more, and do better every day!” to introduce the project. They took that theme and used it as the cornerstone of their purpose – demonstrating once again the importance of creating a positive learning environment. One of our main roles as leaders is to continue to look for and facilitate opportunities for students. This was driven home with me through the work of these student leaders.

The Dresden employees working with the students have

been amazing. Randy Earley, Jeff Markland and others really provided a real-world work environment experience for the students. The importance of teamwork, data collection, planning, presentation skills and organization has all been driven home through this experience. It will be interesting to see the results of their recommendations.

As I walked through the high school last week, I saw the line of students waiting to pick up their textbooks they will use this coming school year. I encourage students to take advantage of the many opportunities that MCHS offers through a variety of clubs and activities. I wish everyone an exciting and rewarding school year. “When opportunity knocks, answer the door.”

She gently placed her hands on a poster, making sure all of the blank spots were gone before she called her handprint masterpiece finished.

Willow, along with more than 130 other children from the Coal City area, gathered Saturday for a morning full of fun at the free Back to School Camp Day at Coal City Middle School, sponsored by the Morris YMCA. On the grounds of the middle school were inflatables, a petting zoo and horse rides, a strategic game of gladiator dodgeball, an arts and crafts tent and snacks, as well as rides on the Grundy County Corn Fest train.

Parents dropped off children of ages ranging from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade for a morning of fun with camp counselors from the Galowich Family, Smith Family, C.W. Avery Family and Morris YMCA branches.

The free camp day was created when Morris YMCA Executive Director Missy Durkin visited Coal City Superintendent Kent Bugg two days after the tornado, asking what she could do for the community.

“I talked to Dr. Bugg and went back to work, and spoke with the CEO and COO of the YMCA and told them that we needed to do something for the Coal City community,” Durkin said. “Then I talked to Dr. Bugg to come up with a plan where the kids could have fun, as well as the parents.”

Durkin and Morris YMCA Program and Membership Director Sarah Porzel put their heads together to create a free mini day camp and family lunch.

Cruise Night for Rotary Club MORRIS – Mustangs, Corvettes and Bel Airs oh my!

Herb Wyeth, Morris Cruise Night committee head, said everyone has been waiting to hit the streets in their hot rods after several area shows have been rained out. He estimated there already were more than 600 cars as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with more pulling in.

Each Morris Cruise Night benefits a local nonprofit; Morris Rotary Club was Saturday’s benefactor.

John Carr, president of Morris Rotary, said the money would help pay for Rotary charities, including the Blessings in a Backpack program, which will be back in full swing as soon as school starts.

Through its Blessings in a Backpack program, students in need are given nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods that are sent home in backpacks Friday afternoons to ensure they have something to eat until they return to school for breakfast Monday morning.

County faces fine for SHOPPING unregistered fuel tank FOR A VEHICLE?

MORRIS – Grundy County will have to pay $500 in fines, as well as a $100 registration fee, for an underground fuel tank it is removing.

The tank, which was installed near the generator at the Grundy County Administration Building, apparently was never registered with the state, according to maintenance director Tony Arnold.

“We found out the tank was never registered with the state, and there is a $500 fine.

And we will have to register it for $100, then get it removed,” Arnold told the Facilities Committee Thursday night.

County Administrator Doug Pryor said Friday the tank was put in with the initial generator, probably when the facility was built, and the new replacement generator installed this year has its own above-ground tank.

Pryor said there was still a small amount of fuel in the bottom of the tank and the lev-

els have not changed, so officials are not concerned with the tank leaking. But he said he understands there are state regulations for the removal of a tank.

Arnold said there will need to be several soil samples as part of mandatory environmental engineering studies, which will cost the county between $2,000 and $3,000.

The fines, registration fees and environmental studies are in addition to the about $10,000 it will cost to remove the tank.

Board member Debra Jo Kinsella said the county needs to do what is required by law, despite mistakes made by previous people involved in the installation.

“It is what it is,” Kinsella said. “We have to be in compliance.”

The county also is looking at estimates to repair or replace carpeting in various areas of the administration building. Arnold said the carpet is about 23 years old. He noted carpet has an average lifespan of 10 years.

Crime Stoppers seeks information on various Grundy County crimes Crime Stoppers of Grundy County is seeking information on several incidents that occurred recently in the area.

One is a case of criminal damage to property and attempted theft from coin-operated machines at Gardner Laundromat, 307 E. Washington St., Gardner, that took place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 31.

Crime Stoppers also is seeking information about criminal damage to property in cornfields in the areas of Shabbona, Southmor and Buffalo roads, where a vehicle was driven through fields containing mature corn, causing

considerable crop damage, according to a news release.

Lastly, Crime Stoppers is looking for information about criminal damage to property and theft that occurred between the evening of July 26 and morning of July 27 on green 17 at Nettle Creek Country Club in Morris.

A flagstick and flag were reported missing, and damage was caused by a vehicle on the green.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call the Crime Stoppers line at 815-942-9667.

Callers may remain anonymous, and rewards up to $5,000 are offered for information that leads to arrests.

Melva Myre, 99, of rural Seneca, died on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Ottawa, with Rev. Tim Johnson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Melva was born on June 25, 1916, in South Ottawa Township, to Ole and Matilda (Oftedahl) Anderson.

She married Marshall S. Myre on Nov. 22, 1935 in Yorkville. She was a graduate of Ottawa Township High School. Melva worked as a cook at Milton Pope School, had a dry cleaning business in Seneca, and a General Store and Antique Shop in Stavanger.

She was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church and Sons of Norway. Melva and her husband, Marshall, farmed in the Stavanger Area for many years, and were active in the Illinois Tractor Pulling Association and National Tractor Pulling Association.

She is survived by one son, William Martin Myre of Morris; one daughter, Marsha Timmons of Seneca, and one sister in law, Magdeline Anderson of Ottawa; 6 grandchildren, Cathy Page, Angie Woodin, William Myre, Jr., Richard Timmons, Patty Jo Morris, and Michele Timmons; 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Melva was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Myre on Sept. 1, 1983; two sisters, Evelyn Skartveit and Delores Krug; three brothers, Orion Anderson, Marshall Anderson, and Norman Anderson, her son in law, Raymond Timmons; her daughter in law, Lynda Myre;

Pro Football Hall of Famer Frank Gifford dies at 84

By BARRY WILNER The Associated Press NEW YORK – Frank Gifford, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who led the New York Giants to the 1956 NFL title and later teamed with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith in the “Monday Night Football” booth, died Sunday.

He was 84.

In a statement released by NBC News, his family said Gifford died suddenly at his Connecticut home of natural

causes Sunday morning. His wife, Kathie Lee Gifford, is a host for NBC’s “Today.”

“Frank Gifford was an icon of the game, both as a Hall of Fame player for the Giants and Hall of Fame broadcaster for Frank CBS and ABC,” Gifford NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

“Frank’s talent and charisma on the field and on the air were

important elements in the growth and popularity of the modern NFL.” Gifford was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1956 when he led the Giants to the championship. He played running back, defensive back, wide receiver and special teams in his career, a versatile star in a time of greater specialization, and went to the Pro Bowl at three positions.

“We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful

and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being,” his family said in the statement. “We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.”

Gifford was the centerpiece of a Giants offense that went to five NFL title games in the 1950s and ’60s.

Beginning in 1971, he worked for ABC’s “Monday Night Football,” at first as a play-by-play announcer and then as an analyst.

Later in life he stayed in the spotlight through his marriage to Kathie Lee Gifford, who famously called him a “human love machine” and “lamb-chop” to her millions of viewers.

“He was a great friend to everyone in the league, a special adviser to NFL commissioners, and served NFL fans with enormous distinction for so many decades,” Goodell added. “We will always remember Frank’s contributions and miss his friendship.”

OPINION Many crises ahead in budget impasse There are those who believe strongly that one side or the other is “winning” our latest and perhaps greatest statehouse impasse in Illinois history. I think it’s too early to judge, and, frankly, I think everyone is going to end up losing here anyway.

As you know, the governor has refused to negotiate a budget until the Democrats accede to his demands to essentially neuter the power of labor unions. The Democrats won’t ever back down from his more radical proposals, including forbidding school teachers from negotiating their own salaries.

Many who think Gov. Bruce Rauner is winning point to the fact that about 80 percent of the state’s General Revenue Fund’s budget is being spent under court order or signed legislation. State employee wages and pensions, Medicaid-reliant hospitals in Cook County, part of the state child care program, debt service, transfers to local governments and human service programs tied to federal consent decrees are all being funded. In addition, Rauner signed the K-12 budget, so schools are being paid on time.

But there are plenty of crises to come. For instance, the state’s Monetary Award Program can’t distribute money to 125,000 poor college students without an appropriation. As of Friday afternoon, Western Illinois University was planning to inform its students they would have to replace that state aid with other sources or out of their own pockets.

Mark Brown at the Chicago Sun-Times has been doing a great job documenting the impact of Rauner’s child care program changes, which is wreaking havoc throughout the state. There also are serious problems with federal grants matched with state dollars. If

VIEWS Rich Miller there’s no state appropriation by the end of September, the state could lose a whole lot of money in the next federal fiscal year.

There’s also more than $3 billion in non-federal human service appropriations which can’t be spent. We definitely will see some all-too-real horror stories very soon. Then there are all the fiscal problems in Chicago. The city’s media tends to give the mayor a whole lot of credence in disputes with governors, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been cranking up the heat on Rauner lately, so that’s a major pressure point.

Not to mention that former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar publicly chided Rauner the other day for not dropping his more extreme anti-union demands and focusing on the budget. That attack could give cover to pro-union Republican legislators to eventually break with Rauner. Right now, I think voters are giving the new guy the benefit of the doubt.

Add those who approve of his job performance to the undecideds in the last statewide poll we’ve seen, and you have a 57 percent majority.

Rather than focus on winning or losing, I really wish the state’s leaders (all of them) would start focusing on solving problems. The governor should stop trying to stick it to the unions, and the Democrats absolutely need to help him come up with some alternative ideas.

Forget about “winning.” Try governing.

Every winter near Valentine’s Day, there are baseball fans who say that the greatest four words in sports are, “Pitchers and catchers report.”

Those words signal the start of spring training and therefore the baseball season.

More and more, with the continuing thirst for high school football, many folks in the Morris area look forward to four different words: “IHSA practice starts today.”

That’s what we have today, as local teams Morris, Minooka, Coal City and Seneca have the official go-ahead from the IHSA to start practices in preparation for the nine-week race for the playoffs.

The regular season begins Aug. 28, when Morris hosts Chicago Austin Polytechnic, Minooka visits Stagg, Coal City plays host to Reed-Custer and Seneca travels to Dwight.

It’s true most teams nowadays get together during the summer to compete in plenty of 7-on-7 competitions, weightlifting challenges, lineman challenges and the like. But they aren’t together as a full unit, making full contact in full pads.

That’s what the official start of practice signals. Everyone gets to come together as a unit and see how they can put the pieces together into a cohesive group.

Football is the only sport that can start today. The other fall sports – boys golf, boys soccer, girls volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf, girls swimming and boys and girls cross country – have their official start dates Wednesday.

The first competition scheduled for any team from the Morris area is the Redskins’ boys golf team, which travels to Whitetail Ridge golf course Aug. 17 for the Plainfield North Invitational.

It should be an interesting fall season all around. The beginning of any season brings

show what hard work and preparation in the offseason can do. There are new coaches sprinkled throughout the area in different sports, waiting for a chance to make a difference in their respective programs.

It seems like it was not long ago that the area’s high school season ended, but time marches on and the new year has begun. All signs point toward a good one.

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Fight and effort is nice, admirable even, but it isn’t getting the White Sox anywhere as the dog days of August settle in.

They came back twice against the Kansas City Royals, the defending American League champions, the class of their division and their longtime nemesis, but all they had to show for trying hard was a third loss by one run in three games in the series, the last one a 5-4 defeat to complete a series sweep.

The Sox have been good enough to piece together two nice winning streaks this season, a six-game run in May against the Brewers and A’s, and a seven-game sizzler right before the All-Star break against the Indians and Boston.

Unable to cope with prosperity, they followed the first streak with seven losses in eight games and the latest one with eight losses in 10 to drop them to 51-57.

And to think the Sox were toying with hanging around in the Wild Card chase. That latest streak was just enough to coax them into keeping Jeff Samardzija around, but now they are seven games behind in the Wild Card chase with five teams between them and a berth.

And with no ability to sustain consistency, be sure that the front office is mapping out the remainder of the season with next year in mind.

“These guys are grinding,” manager Robin Ventura said of his team after the Royals showed the Sox where they stand by defeating them for the 10th time in 13 games.

The up-and-down Sox fought back from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 but the Royals had

the final say with a run in the eighth.

The Sox had tied it on Melky Cabrera’s two-out single scoring Adam Eaton (double) from third in the top of the eighth, but the Royals answered in the bottom of the inning with a run against right-hander Jake Petricka (3-3) on Omar Infante’s infield single that pushed home Alex Rios (double) from third. Infante hit a spinner toward first baseman Jose Abreu, who charged and made a barehand pickup, but Rios beat the high throw to catcher Geovany Soto.

“If everything would have gone perfect, sure, but the game is so fast,” Petricka said when asked if Abreu had a shot. “He made a great play on it and you have to try to get that out.

“The team that puts the ball in play gets breaks like that.

Hats off to a team that just fights like that.”

The Sox, on the other hand, didn’t put it in play after Trayce Thompson (single) reached third with one out in the fourth.

Reliever Kris Medlen, summoned early to replace quickhooked starter Danny Duffy right then and there, struck out Tyler Flowers and Gordon Beckham with runners on second and third.

Adding to a log of negatives on the bases this trip, Adam Eaton was picked off first when his foot slipped off the bag as he went back standing up, Eric Hosmer applying the tag for the first out of the fifth.

This less than 24 hours after Geovany Soto was picked off second with Jose Abreu at bat.

These are the things that catch up to you, and in the Sox case this weekend, against a good team that beat them by one run each game, there is no margin for error.

“We play the first-place team in the division and tried to get wins but all three games

were for one run,” starting pitcher Jose Quintana said.

“These were hard.”

Quintana (62⁄3 innings, four runs) who has never beaten the Royals, made it hard on the Sox by allowing three in the first, the big blast a Kendrys Morales home run.

Many students ask me which conventions they should be using. I typically answer, “As few as possible.”

Some are beneficial, like transfers into the majors and negative doubles.

(I assume you are already using Stayman and Blackwood.) After that, if you play a lot with the same partner, give New Minor Forcing a try. Look at today’s South hand. North opens one club, South responds one spade, and North rebids one no-trump. What should South do now?

He could raise to three no-trump, but that would probably work badly, the defenders immediately taking four hearts and one diamond. How does South find out if partner has three-card spade support?

He could rebid three clubs or three diamonds, but each of those calls is not without risk. Instead, use New Minor Forcing.

South continues with two of the unbid minor. This shows at least game-invitational values and asks partner to describe his hand further.

Here, North bids two spades to show three-card support, and South raises to four spades.

West leads the heart two. East wins with his ace and returns the suit.

West takes the trick, cashes his diamond ace, and shifts to a club. What happens next?

Declarer wins in the dummy, plays a spade to his queen, and cashes the ace, claiming when the king drops -- or does he?

At trick five, a crafty East will smoothly play his spade king. Then, surely South will win with his ace and lead a spade to dummy’s nine, going down when East produces the 10 out of his back pocket.

No drug yet found offers Alzheimer’s protection Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard that certain common medicines used for other purposes may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Is there any truth to this?

Dear Reader: You’ve raised an important question. Unfortunately, research has not so far provided a clear answer.

• HORMONE THERAPY. For years, doctors believed that hormone therapy might protect women from Alzheimer’s disease. This therapy replaces the hormones that a woman no longer makes after menopause.

The possibility that hormone therapy might offer protection was raised by studies which found that women who took estrogen were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those who didn’t. These were “observational” studies: Large

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff numbers of women taking hormone therapy as they entered menopause were compared to women of the same age who were not taking hormone therapy. The women were usually between the ages of 45-55.

Because observational studies can sometimes produce misleading results, a large randomized clinical trial, the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS), was conducted. Such trials are regarded as stronger evidence than observational studies. The women in the study were in their 60s.

The women who took

estrogen-progestin hormone therapy were twice as likely to develop dementia as women who did not use hormones.

The researchers found that estrogen by itself (without progestin) also increased the risk. This study and others also found that hormone therapy increased the women’s risk of strokes. Strokes themselves can cause dementia.

In my opinion, hormone therapy may have different effects depending on a woman’s age. There is much evidence of this in the relationship of hormone therapy and heart disease. Hormone therapy among women entering menopause (in the 45-55 age range) may indeed be protective, whereas it may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in older women.

In any event, hormone replacement therapies now carry warning labels stating that they increase the risk of dementia. I surely do not recommend that women should take hormone therapy with the goal of protecting themselves against Alzheimer’s disease.

• NSAIDs. Examples of NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve) and aspirin. Several studies have suggested that using NSAIDs can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. However, other studies contradicted these results.

Scientists think that NSAIDs may protect against Alzheimer’s by reducing inflammation in the brain. And some experimental evidence suggests that ibuprofen may decrease the production and

accumulation of beta-amyloid, the harmful clumps of protein found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.

• CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING DRUGS. Statins are popular and effective cholesterol-lowering drugs. Some studies have found that they may lower the risk for Alzheimer’s disease, but other studies have failed to find this effect.

So, there are no drugs that I would currently recommend for the purpose of protecting against Alzheimer’s disease.

Several drugs show promising results, but are in the early stages of testing. I am hopeful they will work.
