Grundy County Legislative Committee waits to address vehicles on private property

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – An ordinance that aimed to allow the county to address inoperable vehicles was brought to the Grundy County Legislative Committee on Tuesday night, but it was tabled indefinitely after multiple concerns were raised about it.

“When I see something like this, I want to know why,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said. “There is no specific trigger and no current need that I am aware of.”

Pryor said Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman drafted the ordinance after discussing the issue with attorney Scott Belt, who represents several municipalities in Grundy County.

“It is happening elsewhere so it’s being presented to the county,” Pryor said.

Committee members discussed at length whether an inoperable vehicle on property in rural, unincorporated areas – which falls into the county’s jurisdiction – is an issue as it may be in a municipality. The overall consensus was that it isn’t.

“I can see how it could be an issue in the villages, but in the rural it’s different,” committee Chairwoman Debra Warning said. “There are also some Fourth Amendment concerns.”

Grundy County Board Vice Chairman David Nelson said the ordinance is a bit premature.

“I’m very cautious when it comes to going onto someone’s private property and take their possessions,” Nelson said.

• Brandy Werkmeister, 24, of Morris, was arrested July 1 by Morris police on a warrant for failure to appear on a charge for unlawful possession of drug equipment in Grundy County, and a second warrant for failure to appear on a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor in Will County. She posted a $1,075 bond on the Grundy warrant and was given a July 27 court date. She posted $575 on the Will County warrant and was given an Aug. 5 court date.

Gardner Mayor Mike Serena said Wednesday that Belt, the village’s attorney, drafted an ordinance for the village that officials will soon enforce.

“Gardner has had issues with towing vehicles,” Serena said. “We are going to have to start using the ordinance.”

He said the village tries to be polite and asks residents to clean up inoperable cars, but there always seem to be a few around town, and some residents aren’t taking care of the issues themselves.

He said the village will start enforcing the ordinance and call law enforcement if the problem persists.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Sarah Fisher has traded in her glass beads for books as she transitions from local artist to adult services coordinator at Morris Public Library.

Fisher started the part-time position three weeks ago and hit the ground running, according to Library Director Lorene Kennard.

“Library programs are the hidden gems of a community,” Kennard said. “It’s very difficult to get people to come in, so our goal is to change that.”

She hopes with the addition of Fisher to the team, local residents will consider two questions when they are deciding what to do: “What’s playing at the show?” and “What’s going on at the library?”

Fisher recently retired from her full-time job creating glass beads and jewelry, which she has been doing from home for 15 years.

“I retired from making glass beads, our daughter, Molly, is starting high school and my husband, Eric, and I asked ourselves what we will be doing in four years when she leaves,” she said.

Fisher said the job is a perfect fit for her creative side as it allows her to share her talents and love of the arts with others. She took the part-time position while her husband took a job as executive director of We Care of Grundy County.

“It’s my newfound second passion. I love it,” Fisher said.

“I want to stay late every day.”

The position was left unfilled for several months after Nancy Wilson retired last September.

Kennard said the library filled the position for a while until that person was offered a full-time job elsewhere. She was thrilled when Fisher took the job.

Kids get break from tornado recovery effort

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Rain on Wednesday morning may have put a damper on the expected turnout, but Coal City area children enjoyed a day of play at the park.

The Channahon Park District, with help from seven other area park districts, hosted “Kids Day at the Park” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Coal City Elementary School, to benefit children affected by the EF3 tornado that damaged 884 properties last month.

Nicole Vaira, Channahon Park District program manager, said she lives in the area and realized many kids needed an opportunity to play and enjoy their summer.

One such case is Jarod Garrelts of Coal City, who said his mom learned from Facebook about the event and told him he should go.

The 13-year-old Garrelts, who was sporting a “Field of Dreams” T-shirt, said his family lost most of their house from the tornado.

In the 16 days since the storm hit, the only outdoor activity that stood out to Garrelts was playing wiffle ball at his grandpa’s house.

“This is fun,” Garrelts said

The children moved around quite a bit. They played basketball, soccer, Monopoly, Jenga, Apples to Apples and bean bag toss.

Adam Steffes of the Wilmington Island Park District stepped up to be Ramirez’s partner in bean bag toss when his partner took off.

“We’re just trying to make the best of the situation,” Steffes said. “We had a good turnout in terms of help. Several people went home because of the rain.”

Steffes said Wilmington Island Park District staff saw the post on Facebook and reached out to participate. They were expecting more children with a clearer day, but Steffes said they’d be open to hosting another event.

Little Caesars provides for tornado victims, volunteers

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Little Caesars Love Kitchen was churning out pizzas Wednesday from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for volunteers and families affected by the EF3 tornado that struck Coal City on June 22.

The Love Kitchen travels across the continental United States and Canada, meeting the needs of the hungry, the homeless and disaster survivors.

Local Little Caesars franchise owners and company regional offices donate all food and labor costs for the Love Kitchen servings.

Jim Back said his daughter runs Little Caesars franchises in Bourbonnais and Kankakee, and intends to open a location soon in Diamond.

Before the tornado struck, the Love Kitchen was scheduled to make a stop at The Salvation Army in Kankakee, Back said.

A plan was put into place, allowing the Love Kitchen to serve Coal City, while The Salvation Army operation is carried out by Back’s Bourbonnais and Kankakee stores.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Back said. “I wish we had the Love Kitchen here from day one.”

Alison Tune of the AmeriCorps St. Louis Emergency Response Team has been in Coal City since June 27. Tune and Emily Stursma of the Conservation Corps Iowa picked up two stacks of pizzas from the Love Kitchen and brought them to volunteers they’ve been leading.

Tune said the groups have helped many homeowners while leading volunteer crews.

3 French Hens’ third SHOPPING market of season set FOR A VEHICLE? MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

MORRIS – The 3 French Hens’ third market of the season will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the banks of the Illinois-Michigan Canal in downtown Morris.

At least 130 vendors are scheduled to sell, according to a news release from event organizers. The Hens will be welcoming back many market favorites, including the whimsical Name in Pictures, one of a kinds by Mijon Rose, organics and herbs grown by Creekside Farms and artisan cheeses from Stamper Cheese.

Several new vendors will sell a variety of goods, from garden art crafted from upcycled vintage glassware, to one of a kind customized pendant necklaces. Other vendors will be selling bedding plants, planted containers and perennials. An array of shabby chic, painted primitives, traditional antiques, industrial finds, as well as restored, recycled and patina finds will be available.

Actress Amanda Peterson dies at 43 The ASSOCIATED PRESS GREELEY, Colo. – Amanda Peterson, best known for her role in the 1987 romantic comedy “Can’t Buy Me Love,” has died. She was 43.

Sgt. Mike Moran with the Greeley, Colorado, police department said Peterson was found dead at an apartment complex Sunday. She was alone, and an investigation into her death is ongoing. No

Restaurant owner Juli Soler dies at 66 The ASSOCIATED PRESS MADRID – Juli Soler, who co-ran the world-acclaimed restaurant El Bulli and discovered top chef Ferran Adria, has died.

He was 66.

Soler died on Monday at his home in Rubi, near Barcelona.

Adria announced the death on his official Twitter account. He called it “the saddest news I wish that I have never had to bear.”

On arriving at El Bulli in 1981, Soler was an essential

figure in what became one of the world’s most influential restaurants.

Alongside Adria, who he signed up in 1984, Soler revolutionized diners’ experiences to the point that El Bulli maintained the almost unattainable Michelin threestar status for over a decade.

It was rated the world’s best restaurant five times by British magazine The Restaurant.

Adria said on his Twitter account, “Bulli followers, don’t forget none of this would have happened with-

out him.”

El Bulli, located in Montjoi cove in northeastern Spain, was closed in 2011 so as to start the Bulli Foundation, a food research center.

No cause of death was given.

However, Soler left the Bulli Foundation in 2012 after being diagnosed with a neuro-degenerative disease.

National health care researchers Professional Research Consultants gave out the awards. It is a firm that conducts patient experience surveys on behalf of Morris Hospital, according to a news release from the hospital.

For the first time, three physicians from Morris Hospital received 5-Star Patient Experience Awards, which are based on the percentage of patients who gave an “excellent” rating when asked about the physician’s overall quality of care.

Fire Starter of the Month nominated MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Tracy Barth of Morris has a passion for health care, a passion for people and a passion for Morris Hospital.

She is a role-model employee who treats each patient with respect, is attentive to patients’ individual needs and circumstances and goes the extra mile to ensure patients receive excellent service.

Because of all that she does to personify Morris Hospital’s core values, Barth was selected Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for June, according to a news release from Morris Hospital.

Barth started working six years ago as a patient service representative at the Channahon Healthcare Center. After six months, she transferred to the Morris Healthcare Center where she served in the same role for the rheumatology practice.

“Tracy is the perfect role model for all employees,” Dr. Hadi Hedayati and Dr. Deena Raval wrote when nominating Barth for Fire Starter of the Month. “She has the highest standard of work ethic and will accept nothing less than excellent from everyone. She always helps when needed and often offers before she is asked.”

“Tracy has an excellent impact on every patient she engages with,” the nomination continues. “She is able to greet most patients by name and

always makes them feel welcomed, important and our priority. Her strong customer service to her patients, coworkers and physicians helps us all in our day. She takes care of everything we need her to do and more.”

Barth said connecting with patients is easy to do, particularly since rheumatology patients often require office visits on a regular basis.

“It is almost like family with our patients,” Barth said in the news release. “I do have a soft spot for people in pain.

You can even tell by their voice over the phone. But they come here, and a week later, you can see the progress and know the treatment is working. I’ve seen people walk out of here crying because they feel so much better, and that touches me. That’s the most rewarding part of my job.”

Minooka’s McAsey helps Illinois to Big 10 title

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com Joe McAsey makes history every year for the University of Illinois men’s track and field team.

Last year, the Minooka graduate won the Big 10 title in the 800-meter run, turning in the ninth-fastest time in school history.

He also was a member of the second-place 1,600 relay team and helped the Illini to a second-place finish at the conference meet for the second year in a row.

He also qualified for the NCAA Championships at legendary Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

This season, on the campus of Michigan State University, McAsey was a key figure for the Illini as they won their first Big 10 title since 1994.

He finished second to Penn State’s Brannon Kidder in the 800, and teamed with Cam Viney, David Kendziera and D.J. Zahn to win the 1,600 relay. After that, he qualified for the NCAA Championships again, where he finished 24th.

“This was a good year,” McAsey said. “The team won the Big 10 title, which was our main goal heading into the year. We had been second the last two years, so we knew we were right there. We knew we were ready to do something.

“Everything just came together that day. The seniors [who] had been there since 2011 did great. All the field events and all the running events just had great performances and we got the win as a team. Being on a team that won a Big 10 title is something I will never forget.”

Even though McAsey didn’t repeat as conference champ in the 800, he wasn’t disappointed.

“I was pretty happy with that result,” he said. “The guy who beat me (Kidder) is a great runner. He went on and got second in the NCAAs. It was a very tough race. It came down to the last stretch and he was a little bit faster than me.

It definitely gives me something to come back and shoot for next year.”

“The four-by-four relay was great to be a part of,” he said.

“It’s different because of the team aspect. It was fun to be on it with D.J. We came in as freshmen the same year and we were on that relay that year and didn’t score a point in the Big 10 meet. This year, we were the Big 10 champions.

It’s awesome to be a part of that.”

McAsey also got to run at Hayward Field for the second year in a row.

For track and field athletes, performing at Hayward – the former home of legendary coach Bill Bowerman and track notables such as Steve Prefontaine, Mac Wilkins and Alberto Salazar – is the equivalent of playing baseball at Yankee Stadium or football at Lambeau Field.

“It’s great just being at Hayward,” he said. “There’s so much history there, plus you have the best athletes in the nation that you get to compete against.”

A welcome sight for McAsey this year at U of I was his sister, Moira.

She is a freshman who runs for the Illini women’s track team.

“I saw her at least once a day,” he said. “We would usually see each other before or after practice. I hadn’t seen her that much for a couple of years, with me being away at school and her at home, so it’s nice to have her down here.”

Before he heads back to Champaign, McAsey plans to take a couple weeks off from running before beginning his training.

He won’t lack companionship, as he still remains in touch with high school teammates Danny Bahret, who ran for University of St. Francis, and Dan Popek, who runs for Augustana.

“It’s pretty cool that we stay in touch and work out together,” he said. “Before you know it, the indoor season is going to be here, so I have to start getting my miles in. I want to get another Big 10 title and get back to the NCAAs.”

Fighting abuse, neglect and theft in nursing homes We support a bill in Springfield that would allow for video and audio monitoring devices in nursing homes to help combat and prove abuse.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office said Illinois has more than 860 nursing homes with more than 76,000 residents. Those numbers likely will increase as the state’s population ages. As a result, the about 5,000 complaints per year of abuse, neglect or theft of property by nursing home staff also is likely to increase. The Illinois Department of Public Health found 106 allegations to be valid in 2013.

Allowing residents to install audio or recording devices in their nursing home rooms should help deter abuse of nursing home residents. It also should help prove incidents of abuse, neglect or theft

that might have been swept aside in the past because of a lack of evidence.

One key part of the bill makes it fair and not an invasion of personal privacy: All residents in a room would have to approve the installation of a camera. If one resident wants it installed but a roommate does not, then the camera will not be installed.

The legislation (House Bill 2462) also prohibits a nursing home from retaliating against anyone for using the devices.

Three other states allow for the use of audio and recording devices in nursing home rules. The bill is awaiting a signature from Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner.

We urge Rauner to follow suit and sign this piece of legislation that would help fight abuse, neglect and theft in Illinois nursing homes.

Back to basics with a more functional Washington Somewhere in the rainbow celebrations and dissensions of late, we may have missed something.

Pope Francis gave us a clue as to what that missing something is when, just a few days before the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, he issued an encyclical on creation. He looked to scripture and saints such as his namesake, Francis, to provide us with a lens with which we might see ourselves and the world differently – as gifts.

When we see everything in the world as a gift, we have a new relationship with the world.

In a piece in the Catholic newspaper OSV Newsweekly, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, the president of the U.S. Con-

ference of Catholic Bishops, pointed out the challenge to freedom that now looms: “(T)he freedom to run our ministries and participate in the public square while holding to the teachings of Jesus will likely be challenged,” with “laws and regulations” that “could threaten the life and work of the Church as well as other religious institutions and individuals of faith.”

Kurtz pointed to George Washington and a little book on civility that compiles the rules the first president of the United States tried to live by.

My friend and National Review colleague, Richard Brookhiser, edited an edition of these civility guides and writes: “There is a special

So how can we be great?

Even in these times of globalized indifference, hyper-connectedness and aggressive detachment, achievement and destruction, clarity and confusion, overload and crisis?

Some of Washington’s rules: “Every action done in company ought to be done with some sign of respect to those

that are present.”

“Sleep not when others speak, sit not when others stand, speak not when you should hold your peace, walk not on when others stop.”

“Read no letters, books, or papers in company, but when there is a necessity for the doing of it you must ask to leave. Come not near the books or writings of another so as to read them unless desired, or give your opinion of them unasked.”

“Reproach none for the infirmities of nature, nor delight to put them that have in mind thereof.”

“Strive not with your superiors in argument, but always submit your judgment to others with modesty.”

Modesty is such a lonely word, as Billy Joel might sing.

Here’s an important one: “When you speak of God or his attributes, let it be seriously and with reverence.”

Finally: “Labour to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.”

We are very far away from these precepts at this present moment, but perhaps we can restore some civility again.

Half the time, she’s loving and supportive and willing

to spend time with me. Other times, she is verbally and emotionally abusive. She’ll call me a failure and a disappointment, and cry for no reason (most likely to get attention).

She has done this since my childhood, and I want to escape her toxicity by shutting her out of my life as an adult. However, she has threatened suicide (she has tried it before).

My father is on her side and says he will refuse contact with me if I disown her. I want to keep them both in my life, but it has become too difficult to endure her abuse anymore.
