Hoffman, a head coach of Morris Mustangs Youth Baseball and Morris Tomahawks teams, is coordinating a Morris Mustang Charity All-Star Game as a benefit for Coal City Youth Baseball to help rebuild the fields that were damaged by the June 23 tornado. He said he’s seen an outpouring of support from local residents and businesses since announcing the event.

“The response has been incredible,” Hoffman said. “It just as easily could have been [Morris] that got hit. I know Coal City would’ve stepped up and helped us.”

The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 18 at Morris McKinley Field, 504 McKinley St., Morris, and will feature nine- and 10-year-old All-Stars.

Hoffman said the Morris youth league has an All-Star game each summer, but with the unfortunate circumstances in Coal City, the league decided to make this year’s edition a fundraising event.

“I feel if a youth league nearby has a problem, it’s our responsibility to help,” Hoffman said. “The field we played at in Coal City two weeks before the tornado is damaged and there’s no reason those kids shouldn’t have another opportunity to play.”

Hoffman said trees fell on the bleachers, and dugouts and fencing were torn apart.

“My son [Carter] can’t wait to play in the game,” Hoffman said. “He thinks we should be helping them out.”

Each player and coach participating will donate $10 to the rebuilding fund. Volunteers will sell 50-50 raffle tickets, accept donations and sell water and candy bars at the game.

Hoffman said the Wal-Mart in Morris will donate a $100 gift card to be auctioned off. Dolphin Car Wash and Detailing Center has donated a booklet

Missing Seneca boater found in Illinois River

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SENECA – The remains of a boater who entered the Illinois River in Seneca to swim Saturday and went missing have been recovered.

The 33-year-old Aurora man Orlin Geovanny Palma Cruz entered the water from an anchored boat approximately three-fourths of a mile east of the Seneca boat ramp, according to a news release sent Monday afternoon from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and LaSalle County Coroner. Cruz was found in the Illinois River near Fosse Road in Ottawa and was pronounced dead at 7:18 a.m. Monday by the LaSalle County Coroner’s

office. Seneca Fire Chief Jerry Sears said the department responded with its search and rescue boat at 1 p.m. Saturday when a report was received that a boater was missing in the water.

“We were at the river and searched until about 9 p.m. Saturday and we went back out Sunday morning until about 5:30 p.m.,” Sears said.

Firefighter Karen Osmond said the department called in boats from Marseilles and Morris to aid in the search, along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and a U.S. Coastguard helicopter.

“We were told they were just east of the train trestle on the south side of the river,” Osmond said. “We found out during lat-

The two All-Star teams will be made up of the four best players from the six Morris Mustang League teams, as determined by coaches. The winner of a home run derby featuring one representative from each of the six teams will win a gift card from a place yet to be decided, Hoffman said.

The Morris White Sox will be coached by Lew Berman, Adam Wills and Frank Franzetti. The All-Star players are: Zachary Berman, Aaron Wills, Hoffman, Patrick Stroup, Matthew Stark, Carter Laudeman, Tayden Thacker, Gavin Quevedo, A.J. Franzetti, Tyler Semlar, Zach Smolkovich and Kyler Engelman.

On Sunday efforts were aided by Marseilles Fire District, Ottawa River Rescue and Reading Volunteer Fire Department.

Sears said Monday staff were scheduled to meet to go back out when they learned a body had been recovered in Ottawa that matched the description of the person they were looking for, so the search was halted.

An autopsy was performed Monday morning and a positive identification was made.

The matter is under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the LaSalle County Coroner’s office, according to the news release.

INDICTMENTS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced July 1 that the grand jury has returned the following indictments. The public is advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Ryan Andrew, 24, of Shorewood was indicted for unlawful possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony.

Curtis Claudin, 37, of Peoria was indicted for driving with a revoked license, a Class 4 felony.

Justin Gray, 30, of Minooka was indicted in two counts for domestic battery, both Class 3 felonies; and aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony.

Kevin Pinkerton, 20, of Minooka was indicted in two counts for burglary, both Class 2 felonies.

Richard Reichman, 33, of Morris was indicted for driving while under the influence of alcohol, a Class 2 felony.

Jake Seibert, 21, of Seneca was indicted for the unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

Immaculate Conception School principal Kim DesLauriers finishes his 35th year

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In the summer of 1980, Kim DesLauriers walked into Immaculate Conception School as the new principal, only the second layman principal of the grade school.

This year he finished his 35th year as principal, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon.

“I came here from a school smaller than this where I was teaching half a day on top of being principal. And I had no secretary, so I did it all,” he said. “When I came here I thought I made the big time. I had a secretary. I didn’t have to teach.”

Although he was no longer in a classroom, he was teaching from the moment he started, according to former student Eric Davy.

“I was in eighth grade his first year here,” Davy said.

“His presence was felt right away.”

Davy said it was DesLauriers encouragement years later that sent him back to school to become a teacher.

DesLauriers knows what it’s like to change career paths. His college degree was in business education and he did some student teaching, but jobs were hard to find in 1970 and 1971, he said.

“I was offered a job teaching sixth grade in a Catholic school and I thought, ‘I need a job,’ so I took it,” he said. “I thought quickly I wanted to be a principal.”

He gives teachers credit for staying in one room teaching all day, but said he likes to move around. And move around he does. DesLauriers is an avid biker, runner and often can be found skating through the hallways and down the street in Morris on his rollerblades.

City Council approves dispensary location

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A medical marijuana dispensary is coming to 2400 W. Route 6 in Morris.

Mayor Richard Kopczick and Aldermen Don Hansen, Julian Houston, Jeff Wachowski and Duane Wolfe voted in favor of it, while aldermen Doug Hayse and Randy Larson voted against and Don Matteson abstained. Alderman Bill Martin was absent.

The vote approved an ordinance granting a Conditional Permitted Use permit to Greenhouse Group LLC to open a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn. Kopczick granted Ted Ergo of Nettle Creek subdivision the opportunity to speak for five minutes prior to the council discussion on the dispensary location. Ergo prepared a PowerPoint presentation referencing crime and regulation in California and encouraged

Mitch Khan, CEO of Greenhouse Group, said in response that the California standards are vastly different than Illinois, noting they vary city to city. Khan said Illinois is a logical, methodical state in regards to regulation of granting medical marijuana licenses.

“We appreciate your consideration and hope we have a positive influence on the community and are able to provide medicine for people who need it,” Khan said.

Larson asked if Greenhouse Group looked at other locations in the area, to which he said the company understands residents’ concerns but believe, along with an independent consultant, that this

is a perfect location.

Assistant City Attorney Brad Nolden told Hayse that courts considered whether a location is of significant injury to a nearby area. Hayse, a former Morris police chief, has security concerns.

“California criminals are very similar to our criminals,” Hayse said. “I do believe crime we see in California is the crime we’re going to see here.

I believe that as a 33-year law enforcement veteran.”

Hayse said crimes can happen in the parking lot, down the street and in neighborhoods when criminals track customers.

“This is not about drugs, this is about medicine,” Khan said. “It is vastly different than 17- to 30-year-olds using marijuana.”

Khan reminded council that the state granted licenses, and people aren’t coming off the street to buy it.

“This is about zoning,” Kopczick said. “The question

is whether it meets our zoning.

It is not about crime.”

Kopczick was interrupted

by Ergo, who said it is about crime, and exclaimed that the location is in a flood plain.

As Ergo continued to shout, Kopczick threatened to clear the room and asked Ergo to be quiet before he was removed.

“I’m asking for respect as I finish what I’m saying,” Kopczick said.

Minutes later, Khan was speaking in response to another resident’s question about why it’s not being sold in a pharmacy like other medicine.

Khan responded that was decided by the state, when Ergo again interjected.

Alderman Julian Houston asked Nolden if the council could legally vote it down, and Nolden responded that he’d rather not go down that road.

After the vote was cast, several residents left the room saying Morris needs new government and should be ashamed.

Houston appointed by Kopczick to fill alderman seat

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Mayor Richard Kopczick appointed Monday night Julian Houston as Second Ward Alderman, filling a two-month vacancy for the city council seat.

The appointment came after Morris City Council members cast four “no” votes, one “yes” and one “present,” denying Kopczick’s appointment of Sid Nelson to fill the vacant Second Ward alderman seat.

Alderman Jeff Wachowski voted “yes” and Duane Wolfe voted “present.”

Prior to the vote on Nelson, Kopczick asked for a motion to vote, which received no response for close to 30 seconds.

“OK, so we want to play games?” Kopczick said.

Alderman Randy Larson took issue with the phrasing.

“Those are the wrong words to use,” Larson said.

According to Illinois Municipal Code, the mayor had 60 days from the vacancy created May 4 to appoint someone (Houston in May), at which time the council had 30 days to vote on the appointment. If the appointment was voted down, which it was, the mayor had 30 days from the vote to appoint another alderman (Nelson).

If that second appointment was voted down, which it was Monday night, Kopczick could appoint either of the two people he put before the council.

That person, Houston, will serve as alderman until the next election for the seat.

Kopczick chose not to appoint Tom Hougas, the Grundy County Republican Central Committee’s nomination for the vacancy. Alderman Doug Hayse took issue with it, say-

ing that the Republican Central Committee took time to vet Hougas.

Hayse said he’s known Nelson for a long time and considers him a great man, but preferred to go with Hougas or David Valdivia, the Republican Central Committee’s original nominee.

Kopczick responded that according to state statute, the nomination of a central committee, regardless of party, holds no weight.

The spot has been open since May 4, when 34-year Alderman Ken Sereno retired.

On June 1, Kopczick tried to appoint Houston, a former alderman who also is a Republican, to the open seat, but the appointment was voted down 3-4. Houston lost the Republican primary election to Hayse.

Minooka man humbled as Volunteer of the Year

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – When one finds the word “community” in a dictionary, words like fellowship, common attitudes, interests and goals and a group of people living in the same place grace the page.

Known for his sense of duty to his community, Minooka resident Jay Richie received the Lions Club Volunteer of the Year award at this year’s Minooka Summerfest.

John Jun, general chairman of Minooka Summerfest, said Richie had the most votes by the Minooka Summerfest committee, out of three volunteers who were nominated.

“He is a good man who has been overlooked for too long,” said longtime friend Al Skwarczynski, who nominated Richie. “If you need help doing anything within our community, you only need to tell Jay when and where and he will be there.”

For the past 18 years, Richie and his wife of 52 years, Betty, have called Minooka their community. They moved from Downers Grove, where the two were high school sweethearts,

and Jay Richie immediately jumped into service by joining the local branches of the American Legion and Lions Clubs.

Recently, he has been named one of the deacons of Trinity Lutheran Church in Marseilles, where the couple lived for a short time, chaplain for the Minooka American Legion, and a member of the Minooka Police Pension Fund Board.

Over the years, both he and Betty have worked with the Grundy County Meals on Wheels program, set up bingo at the Minooka Village Hall, decorated Village Hall at Christmas, and helped out at Minooka Summerfest.

“People tell me that this should have been a couple’s award because Betty is out there wherever I go,” Richie said.

It’s that humble attitude and his Christian upbringing that led Jay to his love of community service.

“While I’m not the real outgoing guy who walks into a crowded room and talks to everyone, through community service organizations I can help my fellow citizens,” he

Davy is one of those first-generation students: he sent his three children to ICS and he said having DesLauriers there made the decision an easy one.

“Having him there played into it a great deal,” Davy said.

“With Mr. D., he’s not just an educator. His faith is what separates him.”

Davy said DesLauriers taught him in eighth grade that building a relationship with God was more important than anything.

“He instilled in me his faith and I wanted my kids to have

the same experience,” he said.

Despite the span of 35 years in the education field where advancing technologies have changed the way they communicate, keep records and teach the children, DesLauriers said one thing has remained the same: the student.

“I think students still just want to be loved, they want to be safe,” he said. “The religious atmosphere is still the same. Jesus is the reason for this school.”

DesLauriers will be 69 in November and said he used to think he would retire when he reached 67, but that thought has passed him by.

“I still like what I’m doing,” he said. “I still feel I am able to give, and I don’t want to sit home and watch television or play board games and cards.”

“On a Friday before Memorial Day, 475 volunteers put flags on 36,000 military graves in 27 minutes. We put our heels against the headstone and put the flag at the toe, so that they are all in a straight line. It was impressive,” Richie remembered.

His Minooka Lions Club membership began with Betty’s cousin getting him involved and Richie hasn’t looked back since.

He works on the 5K and takes IDs for the wristbands at Minooka Summerfest, as well as delivers meals to the community during the holidays.

“His presence on the Lions board is invaluable as well as his planning efforts,” Skwarczynski said. “He par-

ticipates in every activity and service event the Minooka Lion’s Club sponsors.”

Richie was surprised when his name was announced as Volunteer of the Year, with the information only being known by the board, his wife and two daughters and Skwarczynski.

Richie and Skwarczynski carried the flags during the parade up to the ceremony stage, where they would normally set down the flags, salute and exit the stage.

“I kept thinking it was strange that Al wanted to stand by the flags after we put them down. Then he said, ‘Let’s listen to [Minooka Village President Pat Brennan’s] speech,’ then he said, ‘Let’s wait longer until after the volunteer of the year is called,’ ” Richie recalled.

He said once he heard the nomination letter written by Skwarczynski, he thought, “I do all that?”

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Betty said of her husband. “He takes it all to heart and gets out there, he does it all.”

LyondellBasell fills We Care pantry MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – On June 26, LyondellBasell provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves at the We Care of Grundy County’s monthly Fill the Pantry.

“LyondellBasell and their employees have been very generous to We Care for a very long time now,” Lori Sandgren, operations manager for We Care, said in a news release. “It is such a blessing to have these hardworking folks ready and willing to help.”

In the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 236 families with its supplies. We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which is able to provide food, cleaning and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

Burt Shavitz, the Burt behind Burt’s Bees, dies at 80

By DAVID SHARP The Associated Press PORTLAND, Maine – The reclusive beekeeper who co-founded Burt’s Bees, and whose face and wild beard appeared on labels for the natural cosmetics, died on Sunday.

Burt Shavitz was 80.

A spokeswoman for Burt’s Bees said in an emailed statement Shavtiz died of respiratory complications in Bangor, Maine, surrounded by family and friends.

Shavitz was a hippie making a living by selling honey when his life was altered by a chance encounter with a hitchhiking Roxanne Quimby. She was a single mother

and a back-to-the-lander who impressed Shavitz with her ingenuity and self-sufficiency.

In the 1980s, she began making products from his beeswax, and they became partners.

The business partnership ended after Quimby moved the company to North Carolina in 1994.

The company continued to expand, but Shavitz moved back to Maine.

He has said he was forced out after having an affair with an employee. In 2007, Clorox purchased Burt’s Bees for $925 million.

“Burt was an enigma; my mentor and my muse. I am deeply saddened,” Quimby

Shavitz received an undisclosed settlement – and 37 acres in remote corner of Maine. He also continued to make appearances on behalf of the company.

“What I have in this situation is no regret,” he said last year while sitting in a rocking chair in his home in Parkman.

“The bottom line is she’s got her world and I’ve got mine, and we let it go at that.”

BUSINESS Morris Hospital honors volunteers for dedicated service MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers recently honored volunteers for their dedicated service during the annual volunteer recognition luncheon held at the Morris Country Club. In the past year, volunteers donated 54,980 hours of service to Morris Hospital, which is the equivalent of about 28 full-time employees.

Mark Steadham, president and CEO of Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers, said in a news release the contributions made by Morris Hospital volunteers are vast and monumental. The greatest number of volunteer hours were donated to the Morris Hospital Patient Transportation Service, which takes a team of about 100 volunteers who donated 27,000 hours of service to provide community members rides to more than 17,000 medical appointments.

Cleanup efforts ongoing at Coal City fields

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – On June 22, an EF3 tornado ripped through the town of Coal City.

It had its way with numerous homes and businesses, along with most of the athletic fields at Coal City High School.

Two weeks after the storm, Coal City High School athletic director Dan Hutchings, along with many others, surveyed the damage.

Now comes the hard part: rebuilding what was destroyed and getting the various fields back to usable status.

“Right now, the focus is what we need to get done to get ready for the fall season,” Hutchings said. “We are in the process this week of having a company come in and use a big vacuum on the fields to get any of the debris that is still there. We need to get them safe for the kids to go out on them.

“The toughest part is going out there and seeing something new. You think that something might not have been damaged, but you look and there is some damage.”

Hutchings said the cleanup and repair of the soccer and football fields are going well.

“We have our high school soccer camp next week and one for the younger kids the week after that,” he said “We think we are going to have the field ready. We are as close to on schedule as we can hope for. Once we get the fence guys out here for the baseball and softball fields, I think they will be able to get a lot done quickly.

“We have to just keep moving on. It will all take shape and we will play things as scheduled. We won’t be having to switch any games that are scheduled to be here.”

One thing Coal City isn’t lacking is help. The volunteer efforts have continued nonstop.

“I am overwhelmed by the support that people have given us,” Hutchings said. “The Morris football and soccer teams came over to help, the Wilmington football team came over. But, more than

One thing Hutchings has attributed to the outpouring of goodwill is social media.

“I think a lot of that is because the kids are so connected now. They play against each other, then they follow each other on social media and become friends. Just a little while ago, my son was playing a baseball game against a team from New Lenox. He got on base and was talking to the

first baseman. I asked him how he knew him, and he said that they played against each other last year and kept in touch through social media.”

Whatever the reason, the cleanup efforts continue in Coal City, and once the fall season starts, the Coalers will be playing on their own fields.

Newark High School to start track program

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@shawmedia.com Jim Still officially began his new role as the principal at Newark High School on July 1, but he’s already helped to bring a significant addition to Newark athletics with the approval of a boys and girls track and field program for the 2015-16 school year.

Still is no stranger to athletics. He spent the past 10 years in the Yorkville School District and was the head football coach for six years before taking an administrative position in the district. It’s no surprise Still dove right in on this project with Newark athletic director Carol Navarro before he officially started as principal.

“When I was in the transitional phase, I went to Millbrook (Junior High) and Lisbon Grade School and met with the building leaders and kids there, specifically the eighth graders who will be freshmen,” Still said. “One of the things I recognized right away and was curious about was that they have track at both of those feeder schools and they’re exceptionally good at it.

“There were many students who qualified for state and won medals while they were there, yet we didn’t have a high school track team. I asked Carol Navarro about that and I asked Amy Smith, our superintendent, about that. Everybody really seemed to be on board with trying to add track. Everybody has been very supportive and very excited. We’ve been busy, but we’re just trying to do what’s best for the kids. It’s a great opportunity.”

Navarro surveyed the students to get an idea of the level of interest in a track and field program. Currently, baseball and softball are the only spring sports offered at New-

ark.

“It really seemed like a no-brainer,” Still said. “We’re a smaller school and we’re very realistic. We don’t want to lose athletes from baseball and softball. We highly encourage kids to do both. We’re open to that.”

Still referred to a recent Yorkville graduate, MacKenzie Lee, who participated in both girls’ soccer and track and field during her time as a student athlete. She not only received a women’s soccer scholarship to Northern Illinois University, but she also was a track and field state qualifier in shot put.

“Here’s a kid who is a Division I soccer player who is participating in track. If you can do that at a bigger school, there’s no question we can do that here,” Still said of Lee. “We’re not going to ask kids to pick. Carol had done a great job putting together a schedule that tentatively doesn’t overlap with baseball and softball. We want to make it doable for our coaches and our kids. I asked MacKenzie how many meets she missed and she only missed three. Truly as long as you schedule it accordingly, there’s no reason kids can’t do both.”

“The sad part is that kids have been able to participate in middle school and then not have a program at high school.

We’re really excited. It gives kids an opportunity to tap into some of their strengths and to be able to continue that level of success they’re having in seventh and eighth grade.”

The Newark School Board approved the sport and budget at its June 25 meeting, and Navarro has already developed a 2016 schedule that includes six local track meets – meeting the requirements of the IHSA in order to participate in the state series meets.

“We’ve got teams like Seneca and Yorkville scheduled

and a few invites,” Navarro said. “Some of them are boys only and girls only, but most are co-ed. We have the minimum number to start with to compete at the state level and we can always add more when we see what our numbers are.

They’re excited about it. Some of the students got wind of this at the end of the school year and they’re really excited.”

The sport is also personal for Navarro, as her daughter is set to run track at Judson University.

“Track is fun to watch. I like it. It’ll be nice to see a little bit different venue that I’ve never seen in all the years I’ve been here,” said Navarro, who is in her 18th year at Newark.

“We’re going to give it a whirl and see how it goes. It’s a real-

ly neat environment to be at, watching my daughter run in high school.”

Based on the survey, Still estimates a team of 20 boys and 20 girls for the inaugural season. Now, work begins to purchase equipment, hire coaches and work out other details to kickstart the sport.

None of the Little Ten Conference members have their own track, and some have coop teams with other schools.

Newark used to co-op with Plano.

Newark does not have a track, but Still plans to pair the new high school coaches with the coaches at Millbrook and Lisbon to get training ideas. He does expect to have pits installed for events like high jump and long jump to

practice safely.

“The future certainly looks bright,” Still said. “We’re just going to have to take our show on the road. It’s expensive to build a track. Maybe one day. ... Right now we’re going to get creative.”

The popularity of track and field could also spark interest in creating a cross country team in the future – something that will be monitored by the athletic department in upcoming seasons.

The 2016 track and field season officially begins Jan. 18. The girls’ state meet will be held May 19 to 21, and the boys’ state meet May 26 to 28 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Newark’s first scheduled meet is March 31 at Plano.

Nutley captures first win of season at Grundy STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – Under normal conditions, John Nutley’s eyes would grow as big as saucers at the sight of pole position in the starting lineup.

But not before Friday’s first of two 25-lap late-model features at Grundy County Speedway.

His qualifying time was not what he would have wanted, but after some changes to his car, the result was a rocket that led the race from start to finish.

There was nary a yellow, and nary a challenge, as Nutley kept a steady pace ahead of second-place Brandon Clubb.

It was the Nutley’s first win of the season.

Clubb ran a strong second ahead of a pack of battling veterans. Larry Schuler, Brett Sontag and Ricky Baker were bumper to bumper for several laps.

Disaster almost struck at

the midway point when Schuler’s car developed a sudden handling problem. All three cars came together in Turn 2, but nobody spun, and the race continued.

Schuler eventually faded, while Eddie Hoffman came on strong late to take third, ahead of Sontag, Baker and James Gregait.

Schuler had no bobbles in the second feature, taking the lead from Scott Koerner on Lap 7 and racing away from the pack for his third victory.

Schuler beat Ricky Baker by 0.321 seconds.

Third went to Paul Shafer Jr., who was followed by Sontag, Chris Cooling and Clubb.

Two-time defending Mid-American champion Tommy Knippenberg ended a season-long dry spell in the most dramatic fashion possible to win the 25-lap main event.

Knippenberg went from third to first in the final five laps, passing John Ventrello

in the final turn to claim the victory.

Ventrello settled for second ahead of Kevin Gentile, Kenny Benson, Geoff VeZain and Chuck Yuris.

Tim Stewart took the lead on Lap 5 of the street stock feature, but would receive a lengthy and intense challenge from Christy Penrod before hanging on at the finish to claim his second victory.

Third went to Seth Blommaert, ahead of Bill Serviss, Zach Sontag and Paul Polarek.

Quick qualifier Derek Vertheen took over on Lap 3 and won his first four-cylinder feature of the season in a runaway over Michael Tobuch and Bryce Leake. Danielle Dobczyk, Dan Schmeissing and Alex Gay completed the top six.

On Sunday, Chris Woodall won the street stock feature, along with having the fast time of 17.729. Cheryl Hyrn took second in the feature

and also won the trophy dash.

Seth Blommaert was third in the feature, followed by Christy Penrod, Zach Sontag, Rita Fields, Ken Benson, Bradley Stewart and Darrell Gay. Spencer Leake won the first heat race, with Tim Stewart taking the second.

In four-cylinder action Sunday, Michael Tobuch won the feature, followed by Chris Mihalski, Ricky Wilson, Kyle Royster, Dylan Marshall, Jim Gross, Rich Dearborn, Dan Schmeissing, Jacob Theissen and Eric Boudreau. Gross (19.952) had the fast time, with Schmeissing winning the trophy dash. Heat race winners were Royster, Derek Vertheen and Mihalski.

STARS series: The Short Track Auto Racing Series ran at Grundy on Saturday, with two weeks worth of action, making up for June 20’s rainout.

In the first National Midget feature, Brad Greenup took

first place, followed by Tyler Baran and Mario Clauser.

Darren Ihrke won the Classic Modified race, with Greg Wills taking second and Scott Ihrke placing third. Tyler Brown captured the checkered in the Legacy race, followed by Nathan Bertino and Kyle Voss, while Jamie Domski took first in the Mini Cup, with Amanda Bohn second and Maggie Struthers third.

In the regularly scheduled card, the National Midget title went to Clauser, followed by Tyler Baran and Nick Baran.

In the IRS race, Erica Ensor won, with Travis Mahoney second and Pat Bruns third.

Rauner diverting blame for state woes Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is proving to be quite adept at skirting responsibility for the current statehouse impasse and impending government shutdown.

He relentlessly has painted himself as the good guy, even to the point of blatantly abandoning his previous stances.

For instance, Rauner righteously has slammed the Democrats’ “unconstitutional” unbalanced budget, even though his own proposed budget also was billions of dollars out of balance.

Rauner trashed that Democratic budget even after he signed the part that funded schools, thereby ensuring he avoided blame if schools didn’t open on time.

Rauner warned in April the state had no money to bail out Chicago, then offered $200 million a year in “found money” for the Chicago Public Schools to keep it from going belly up.

He’s a clever dude, that one.

He’ll say just about anything to shift the focus off him and onto the Democrats.

Rauner said last week via an email to state employees he hadn’t heard any response to his newly proposed compromises on his nonbudget demands, which he wants resolved before he’ll even talk about the budget. But Senate President John Cullerton had been working with the governor on workers’ comp, property taxes and other issues, and many of Rauner’s “new” compromises weren’t new at all.

The Democrats have responded by pushing a proposal they hope will help give them an edge on the governor. The Senate Democrats last week used their large veto-proof majority to pass a bill to fund a few “essential” state operations for one month, at a cost of $2.26 billion.

VIEWS Rich Miller The legislation includes funding for things such as sex offender GPS tracking, community care programs for the elderly, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency’s monitoring of nuclear sites and its natural disaster response, along with operational funding for veterans’ homes, the Illinois State Police, the Illinois School for the Deaf, the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, the Illinois National Guard and DCFS group homes, foster homes and protective services.

House Speaker Michael Madigan told reporters he’d heard at least two House Republicans were willing to vote to keep the government from totally shutting down.

But the House GOP leadership said the governor had placed a very large “brick” on the bill, and the Republicans complied with his wishes, as they pretty much always have since Rauner’s inauguration.

A revolt from below is highly unlikely, however. Rauner is Illinois’ first Republican governor in a dozen years, so Republican lawmakers truly want to help him succeed.

Plus, the governor is sitting on an unlimited supply of campaign money, and they want that cash for next year’s elections – and they don’t want any of it used against them.

Even so, it wouldn’t hurt if the more reasonable Republican lawmakers finally find the courage to suggest a way out of this mess.

Motorcycle safety a priority At first glance, the Illinois Fatal Crash Summary for the first half of 2015 appears to be trending the wrong way.

After the Fourth of July weekend, 438 people had lost their lives on state roadways, according to statistics compiled by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

That’s 11 more traffic deaths than last year on the same date.

In 2014, 16 percent of the fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday in Illinois – three out of 18 deaths – were alcohol-related, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Within the statistics, however, a positive trend can be seen in one sector: motorcycle fatalities.

Of the 438 total fatalities, 44 were motorcycle related.

That translates to 10 percent of all fatalities connected to motorcycles. (Forty-one vic-

tims were drivers, three were passengers.)

That percentage happens to be the lowest this decade.

In 2010, motorcycle fatalities accounted for 13.9 percent of traffic fatalities.

In 2011, they were 15.7 percent of the total.

In 2012, the rate was 15.4 percent; in 2013, 15.2 percent; and in 2014, 12.8 percent.

The decline to 10 percent is a step in the right direction.

Credit must be given to motorcycle riders, first of all, for exercising care every time they take to the road.

Automobile and truck drivers also are a factor in the improved motorcycle safety statistic. IDOT’s “Start Seeing Motorcycles” public safety campaign appears to be bearing fruit.

IDOT’s acting secretary, Randy Blankenhorn, said in a news release in May

that more than 12,000 “Start Seeing Motorcycles” banners and yard signs had been distributed during the past four years.

The campaign also urges motorcycle riders to follow the rules of the road, wear proper gear and make themselves visible.

Blankenhorn noted that nationally, motorcycle accidents account for almost 15 percent of all vehicle fatalities, even though motorcycles comprise only about 3 percent of total vehicle registrations. Sometimes it is not readily apparent whether public safety campaigns are working.

But if the reduced motorcycle fatality rate remains low, it will mark a break from recent higher rates in Illinois, and it will represent a significant reduction compared to the national rate of nearly 15 percent.

On a given bridge deal, sometimes declarer or the defenders reach perfection, finding the winning line or defense – as in this deal. It was played by four of my students, who (unusually) requested anonymity.

How did the defense go against four spades following West’s diamond-10 lead?

After East’s opening bid and South’s overcall, West made a negative double. That showed four hearts, but she might have held five hearts in a hand too weak for a two-heart response. Then, North was overly exuberant. She should have settled for a game-invitational sequence. (This could have been via an old-fashioned jump to three spades or a modern three-diamond cue-bid raise.) But with a surge of adrenaline, she bid four spades, hoping either that the contract would sneak home or that her opponents would make an indiscreet foray at the five-level. East was tempted with her strong hand, but allowed her quasi-balanced pattern to dissuade her from going higher.

East won the first trick with her diamond ace and accurately shifted to the heart six. Now West, correctly judging that this was not a singleton, put in her jack.

South won with dummy’s queen and led a trump, but East dashed in with her ace and played her second heart. West won with her ace and returned the suit, which East ruffed to defeat the contract. Perfection!

In 99 percent of the cases it would be OK. But in light of what we see in the news, it’s your job as a mother to err on the side of caution, and I don’t recommend it.

Now that they earn lots of money, it’s like we’re not worthy of their company. I

Qualifications: Candidate must be an RN with a current IL Nursing License. Candidates must have a minimum of two years nursing experience in Illinois, one of which within a hospice, long term care facility, or medical surgical unit caring for the elderly or chronically ill. The candidate must have current successful completion of the IDPH certification "Train the Trainer" and CPR Certification or ability to successfully complete both before 08/2015.

Duties: Candidate will supervise the advanced student clinical experience in the hospital setting and assist lead instructor in clinical supervision of first year students in the long term care facility setting. Candidate will assess student progress in 21 manual skills, assist in recording clinical grades, and assist with classroom management.

PUBLIC NOTICE BIDDING AND CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS Notice To Bidders Sealed bids for the 2015 Mechanical Renovation Work Grundy Area Vocational Center Morris, Illinois, will be received by the Board of Control, Grundy Area Vocational Center, at their 1002 Union Street, Morris, Grundy County, Illinois, until 2:00 P.M. prevailing time on the 20 day of July, 2015. Bids will be opened and read aloud at that time.

The work is to be performed in accordance with the proposed Contract Documents as prepared by Healy, Bender & Associates, Inc., Architects-Planners, 4040 Helene Avenue, Naperville, Illinois. The proposed Contract Documents may be obtained by request to the Architect.

Upon receipt of a completed Registered Plan Holder Record form and a Bidding Documents License Agreement, prospective bidders will become registered plan holders.

During the bidding period, the office of the Architect will send project addenda, clarifications, and other project information to registered plan holders via the email address (es) listed on the Registered Plan Holder Record on file at the Architect's office.

These proposed Contract Documents may be studied at the office of the Architect or at the following locations: Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties Plan Room 233 N. Springfield Avenue, Joliet, Illinois These documents may also be viewed online at the McGraw-Hill Construction - Dodge internet site at www.dodge.construction.com.

Bids will be received on General Contract Work, including all trades.

BIDDER RESPONSIBILITY Each Bidder must satisfactorily complete the Bidder Responsibility process described in Section 01000, Bidder Responsibility Criteria of the Project Manual by providing the required Documents.

In the case of a joint venture or partnership, each joint venturer or partner must independently meet each of the requirements set forth in Paragraphs 1.02, 1.03, 1.04 and 1.05 in Section 01000 - Bidder Responsibility Criteria.

The required Documents must be delivered along with the bidder's sealed bid at the same place and time required for the bid. Contents of each bidder's Responsibility Criteria Documents will be available for public review.

The Bidder Responsibility Documents will be reviewed by the Owner and Architect to determine the lowest responsible Bidder.

Each bid must be accompanied by a Bid Guarantee in the form of a Bid Bond, Certified Check or Bank Draft in an amount equal to not less than five percent (5%), of the bid and made payable to Grundy Area Vocational Center, 1002 Union Street, Morris, Illinois. No bid shall be withdrawn for a period of thirty (30) days after the bids opening date without the consent of the Owner. Checks or drafts of unsuccessful bidders will be returned as soon as practical after opening and checking the bids.

Successful bidder must provide a Performance Bond and a Labor and Material Payment Bond in the full amount of the Contract, acceptable to the Owner.

The Owner reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to waive any informalities in bidding.
