MORRIS – Having been involved with Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice these past 30 years, I have seen it grow from the infancy stage to the vibrant agency it has become today.

I remember the first office located above the Grundy Bank. We occupied this space for three years, then we moved to Morris Business and Technology Center for 22 years.

We are now lucky enough to be located in our own building in the Canalport building on Illinois Avenue.

Let me take a step back and explain more about hospice.

Hospice is professionally directed care designed to enhance one’s quality of life as the end of life draws near. I’ve said this many times, and I’ll say it again: Our hospice volunteers are the “Hearts and

COMMUNITY PULSE Joan Sereno Hands” of the organization.

No task is too big or small for our volunteers.

The most important thing is to listen, to hold a hand, to offer a smile, or just be there for someone – and I believe that the volunteers are wonderful at all of these things.

I’ve heard the volunteers say many times that they feel they gain more than they give.

Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice is comprised of 12 volunteers, 15 board members and 23 auxiliary members. I always say “we are small but we are mighty.”

We have three support groups that meet monthly. The support groups are as follows:

the Bereavement Group, the Widow Group and the Cancer Group. Once a year, we offer a “Coping With Loss” class to become a hospice volunteer.

As a community agency, we rely heavily on our many community partnerships to raise money and awareness.

One of our biggest partnerships exists with United Way of Grundy County. In addition to our partnerships, we host two specific events twice per year.

In June, we host Morris Cruise Night, and in November, we host Draw Down.

Unfortunately, this year’s Cruise Night was rained out – but the 50-50 raffle winner did win $1,840. We are very lucky that our board members, the Hospice Auxiliary, and our volunteers help and support our Cruise Night event.

The money raised was used

to buy supplies and items needed by our patients. Cruise Night is always a fun evening.

The team at Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice is very lucky and privileged to be a part of a community that supports its agencies, as does Grundy County.

It is impossible for an organization to succeed without the support of the community and the people. We feel very blessed to be a part of Grundy County.

Kiwanis Club coming to Minooka, Channahon area If you go

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A sixth Kiwanis Club is coming to Division 24 of Kiwanis International, which serves Grundy and LaSalle counties.

Don McKinney, superintendent and principal at Nettle Creek School District 24, and Lt. Gov. of Division 24 for the Illinois Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis International, announced Wednesday plans for a new club that will serve the Minooka and Channahon communities.

Kiwanis International is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the Chanooka Kiwanis Club will be the first new Kiwanis Club in Division 24 in decades, according to a news release from the organization.

It will join the clubs in Morris, LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa,

The organizational meeting for Chanooka Kiwanis Club is set for 6 p.m. July 25 at Chapin’s East in Minooka. About 20 people have expressed an interest in being Charter Members, but McKinney said more are needed to help serve the

children of Channahon and Minooka areas, which have grown considerably in recent years.

Former Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Superintendent Al Gegenheimer, who retired June 5, said he’s been a Charter Member of the Shorewood Kiwanis Club, although he’s lived in Minooka for more than 40 years.

Gegenheimer said with the growth of Minooka and Channahon, there’s many new people who want to get involved in the community.

“We’re only as good as our next generation,” Gegenheimer said. “We have nothing but great kids in the area, just as good now as when I started in education years ago.”

Gegenheimer said he foresees Chanooka Kiwanis Club working to provide some help

for needy families and possibly establishing a scholarship for area high school students.

McKinney said one thing he sees the club doing is taking part in the club’s literacy program, where members visit schools to read to students four times a year.

Prospective members should be community- and service-minded, giving and caring, Gegenheimer said.

“It’s not about what the club does for a member, it’s about the public service you offer as a member,” he said.

“Generally, the more you give, the better you feel.”

Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said he’s in support of Kiwanis Clubs because they help children and the community grow.

“I’ll talk to them and help them as much as I can,” Brennan said. “We’ll help in whatever way we can.”

MORRIS – At the back of the Grundy County Agricultural District Fair, past the petting zoo, the corn dog and Philly cheese stands, the Tempest and the Gravitron and the grandstands, lies the heart of the fair: the cages and stalls where the animal judging takes place.

“It’s the agricultural side that draws everybody in,” said Jim Hintze, of Mazon, the fair’s superintendent of poultry. “You can go to a carnival anywhere. This is about the heritage.”

Hintze, who started showing horses at age 7, said raising and taking care of animals teaches children responsibility. The Grundy County Fair’s show animals include beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats and horses.

The poultry barn houses bantams, chickens, roosters, rabbits, goats and pigeons.

“There’s people who’ve showed here for 30 years,” Hintze said.

Hintze is there to help the animals’ owners, feed and water the animals after their owners have gone, and make sure no one messes with them or the cages. For the most part, visitors mind themselves well, he said, although there was one instance of a cage door getting opened and an animal escaping. Hintze managed to chase it down and get the bird back in its cage – but it was a good chase, he said.

“I had to close the door, or he’d of been in the midway,” he said with a chuckle.

Brian Malone, of Kankakee, shows pigeons and brought 55 of his best birds to the fair.

“My dad had birds,” he said. “I was brought up with pigeons.”

Kids having fun at the County Fair MORRIS – The Grundy County Fair offered something for kids of all ages. From pageants to petting zoos, fireworks to farm animals, the fair provided a variety of venues for smiles to emerge.

Children are encouraged to enter the pageants and the talent show if they would like to participate in the fair’s entertainment.

Free shows and a petting zoo are always available to those children who would rather explore and meet animals while at the fair.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Months of debate on multiple fronts could reach resolution Monday night during the first Morris City Council meeting in three weeks.

Whether the weekend’s holiday fireworks carry over to the Morris Municipal Services Facility’s council chambers remains to be seen, but hot-button issues have packed the room with Morris residents in recent meetings.

The council is scheduled to discuss the Morris Planning Commission’s recommendation to approve an ordinance granting a conditional permitted use to Greenhouse Group LLC to open a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn at 2400 W. Route 6.

City council voted, 4-3, on June 1 to table discussion on the proposed location, after a presentation by Greenhouse Group was followed by more than two hours of debate and questions from the council and about 20 residents, directed toward Greenhouse Group COO Matt Darin and CEO Mitch Khan.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded 18 licenses to grow and 52 to sell medical marijuana in Illinois. The decisions were not controlled by

local municipalities. Greenhouse Group already has locations approved by officials in Mokena and Deerfield.

“We’re hopeful the board understands that we’re abiding by state law,” Kahn said when asked about his outlook toward Monday’s meeting.

“We hope the results come out similar to our previous two locations.”

What could complicate the matter, however, is the city’s vacant alderman seat. The dispensary discussion was tabled after Alderman Bill Martin motioned to allow time to fill the seat and for council to further research the factors involved in a medical marijuana dispensary.

Monday’s meeting agenda starts with Mayor Richard Kopczick’s appointment of a candidate to fill the open seat.

Kopczick’s first appointment – former Alderman Julian Houston on the wishes of 34year retired Alderman Ken Sereno – was voted down, 3-4.

The Grundy County Republican Central Committee has nominated Thomas Hougas for the seat.

Kopczick said if council decides Monday not to approve his appointment, it’s possible the dispensary location discussion would be tabled again.

Mormon leader Boyd K. Packer dies at 90 Diana

By BRADY McCOMBS The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY – Mormon leader Boyd K. Packer, president of the faith’s highest governing body, has died. He was 90.

Packer died Friday afternoon at his home in Salt Lake City from natural causes, church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement.

He was next in line to become president of the Salt Lake Citybased Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Packer was known for being a staunch advocate for a conservative form of Mormonism, making him an idol for like-minded, devout Latter-day Saints but also a target of frequent criticism from gay rights groups and more liberal Mormons.

He had been a member of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1970.

The group is modeled after Jesus Christ’s apostles and serves under the church president and his two counselors.

He is the second member of quorum to die in recent months. L. Tom Perry died on May 30 from cancer.

Quorum member Russell M. Nelson, 90, now becomes the leader who would take Mormon President Thomas S. Monson’s place because he is now the most tenured of the group. Monson is 87 years old, and church officials have said he’s feeling the effects of his age.

Replacements for Packer and Perry will be chosen sometime in the coming months by Monson, considered the religion’s prophet.

Members of the faith believe those decisions are guided by inspiration from God. Some past quorum members have been moved up from another governing body, the Quorum of the Seventy, while others have come from leadership posts at church-run universities.

Packer was born Sept. 10, 1924 in Brigham City, Utah, and was a bomber pilot during World War II. He earned an undergraduate degree from Utah State University and a master’s in educational administration from Brigham

Young University.

During his 45 years as a member of the quorum, Packer became known as a fearless defender of the gospel and master teacher of church principles, the church said in a news release.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said in a statement that Packer was “unwavering in his devotion to his faith and the principles by which he lived his life.” Herbert added that Packer’s “strength and love were felt by church members throughout the world.”

Fellow church leaders called him a true apostle for the religion.

“From the crown of his head to the soles of his feet, he represented the savior of the

world,” said quorum member M. Russell Ballard in a news release.

Packer spent most of his adult life working for the church and earned a reputation of being a tenacious advocate for his orthodox views on Mormonism, said Patrick Mason, chairman of the religion department and professor of Mormon studies at Claremont Graduate University in California. Some called him a bulldog, but Packer preferred the biblical analogy of “watchman on the tower,” Mason said.

He was known for having a major influence within the church hierarchy and bureaucracy, having mentored at least one if not two generations of church leaders and bureaucrats, Mason said.

Packer is remembered for giving a speech in 1993 in which he warned that the religion faced the greatest threat from three groups: feminists, homosexuals and intellectuals.

In 2010, he denounced homosexual attraction as unnatural and immoral. His hostility toward homosexuality made him a target in recent years of gay rights advocates, said Armand Mauss, a Mormon scholar and retired professor of sociology and religious studies at Washington State University.

In 2013, a Utah gay-rights organization started a petition to protest the naming of a new Weber State University center after Packer.

Douglas dies at 92 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Diana Douglas, the first wife of Kirk Douglas and mother of Michael Douglas, died Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 92.

Douglas died of cancer at a motion picture industry retirement home in the Woodland Hills neighborhood, according to an obituary from Michael Douglas’s production company, Furthur Films. It cited Diana Douglas’s husband of fifteen years, Donald A. Webster of Washington, D.C. Born Diana Love Dill in Bermuda, where her family had lived for centuries and her father was the attorney general, Douglas later moved to New York and met Kirk Douglas while they were both studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

She later went to California on a $200-a-week contract with Warner Bros. against Douglas’s advice that she try for Broadway instead. She went on to have a six-decade as an actress and model, appearing in dozens of movies and TV episodes.

She also did stage roles, including some on Broadway.

Before the council meeting, the Judiciary and License Committee is scheduled to consider an application for a Class E liquor license from Bonnie Ferrari, doing business as Lili Mae’s, LLC, to operate a video gaming operation at 1828 N. Division St. It’s the second time in two months Ferrari has applied.

A Class E liquor license is required to sell beer and wine only, and the state requires a liquor license to open a video gaming business.

A motion died on the council floor in May, when Alderman Don Hansen said he was reluctantly making the motion, citing his desire to see how the city’s one video gaming business, Hook’s Hideaway, progresses.

Since Ferrari applied in May, a Class E license was granted to Holiday Inn Express and a Class D license to David Bzdill to operate a private club. Kopczick said Thursday it’s Ferrari’s right to apply again.

He only brought one of his Show Kings. The other he just discovered nesting on a fertile egg, so he left her at home.

“A baby is worth more to me than a blue ribbon,” he said.

Pigeons are not high-maintenance, he said.

“You just keep the floor dry,

never let them run out water, and have good ventilation, and anybody can raise pigeons,” Malone said.

Emily Lesko and her father Tim, of Naperville, brought eight pigeons to show. Emily said the hardest part of raising pigeons is catching them.

“Some of them are crazy,” she said with a giggle.

This is the first year the Leskos have brought pigeons to the show. They enjoy the hobby of raising and showing them. “It’s an activity we can do together,” Tim said.

Cody Anderson, 11, of Tonica, attended the fair Saturday morning to show his hogs. He ended up taking first place in his class for showmanship with his champion gilt, Snow White. In the category of showmanship, owners try to steer their pigs close to the judge.

Anderson said he did it by working with his pig a lot.

CHANNAHON – There’s no substitute for putting the ball in play.

Just ask the Minooka 12U Mudslingers after they beat the Somonauk RedHawks, 155, on Sunday to win the championship of the Channahon Fireworks Tournament.

Minooka, which earned a berth in the title game with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Whiteford in the semifinals earlier in the day, struck out only three times in its four innings at bat. And that’s part of the plan, co-coach Brent Barnes said.

“We’ve been working on our hitting,” Barnes said.

“The top seven or so in our lineup can really crush the ball. We’ve been working on having the guys at the bottom put the ball in play so we can turn the lineup back over to the top, and they did a good job of that.

“We have some speedsters all up and down the order, so if they just put it in play, there’s a good chance they will get on. And, once we’re on base, we keep running.”

Minooka saw Somonauk take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that didn’t last long. The Mudslingers got five hits and stole 10 bases in the bottom of the first en route to eight runs.

Jake Formenti, who pitched the first three innings, led off with a single up the middle, then stole second and third.

Catcher Bryce Barnes then walked and stole second before Jonathon Forneris singled to right to score Formenti and move Barnes to third.

A steal of second by Forneris put runners on second and third, and Brandon Moore beat out an infield hit to second, scoring Barnes.

Moore stole second before a wild pitch brought in Forneris. Tyler Standord walked, then stole second, and Moore scored when Tre Sangiacomo grounded to third and Moore beat the throw at home.

A historic pitching match with Chris Sale

By TONY GINNETTI For the Sun-Times CHICAGO – Chris Sale will be named Monday to the American League All-Star team, his fourth consecutive honor in a season that is becoming historic for the 26-year-old lefty.

And Monday night, he will attempt to become the first pitcher ever to record nine consecutive games of 10 or more strikeouts.

His mound opponent for Toronto will be another former Sox lefty who already has a treasure chest of baseball history to his name and a likely Hall of Fame plaque in his future, Mark Buehrle.

Baseball’s spotlight will relish the match-up.

“We didn’t do it for that,” Sox manager Robin Ventura

said of moving back Sale’s scheduled Sunday start. “We did it more for Chris, but it ends up being a nice game that our fans should enjoy.”

“Mark should be celebrated for everything that he’s done here,” Ventura said. “He’s meant a lot to Chris and a lot of these guys who are here in mentor fashion, the guy who can show you how to grab the ball and pitch and get it done.”

Infielder Gordon Beckham has played behind both and knows what sets them apart.

“Part of being in the big leagues is learning from guys who have been in the big leagues,” he said of their clubhouse influence. “As pitchers, they both work so fast, but they’re different. They go out and throw the ball over the plate and whatever happens,

happens.”

The man who arguably has had the best perspective of both careers is Sox pitching coach Don Cooper.

“They are two different styles, but any style can be dominant if you do one thing – throw your stuff in the [strike] zone,” he said. “No matter what your stuff is – curve, slider, all of it – throw it in the zone, and Sale and Buehrle do that.”

Command of the strike zone has been Buehrle’s “greatest asset,” Cooper said.

“That transition of when he was throwing 91 and then maybe 88 [mph] was seamless because he never relied on speed, so he could still dominate games,” he said.

In that sense, Buehrle is not unlike Hall of Famer Greg

Maddux, who mastered control and worked the corners of the strike zone as velocity declined.

“They had similarities to just grab it and throw it,” Ventura said. “The movement, taking a little off, just their ability to locate exactly where they want to and move it back and forth.”

Sale still has tremendous velocity in his arsenal, and a buggy-whip delivery that adds to a batter’s woes.

But he shares with Buehrle the mindset of what Cooper said is key for any pitcher.

Now in his 16th season and last contract year with the Blue Jays, Buehrle boasts a World Series ring, two no-hitters, five All-Star appearances, four Gold Gloves and a lifetime 208-156 record so far. But Coo-

per counts Buehrle’s durability as equally remarkable.

“When you see a guy who pitches 200 innings [in a season] for four or five years, that’s something. But to do it for 15 years [as Buehrle has] you’re a stud, no matter what style you have. That’s a tremendous athlete. When you can pencil in a guy for six or seven innings in a game, at the end of the year, that’s such a valuable commodity. That’s another thing about Buehrle – that he can last and be so good.”

Cooper understandably is fond of both pitchers.

“I appreciate the hard work that no one sees,” he said.

“Sale is probably the most talented guy I’ve ever had, but he still has time to go to reach where Buehrle is.”

Cubs offense might be coming around on pitching gains

By BRIAN SANDALOW For the Sun-Times CHICAGO – Joe Maddon once again stressed he believes in magic. He also stressed he believes the Cubs offense will come around.

For some reason, those felt related after the Cubs beat the Miami Marlins, 2-0, on Sunday despite grinding out only three hits.

“We did well. I am not concerned about the offense. I know it’s going to show up,” Maddon said. “Like I said, as long as you can pull some of this stuff out, this magical stuff out while you’re waiting for the offense to come, I’ll take it.”

Whether or not the Cubs are winning with magic is up for debate.

They also got their second 2-0 win in a week, to go along with a 1-0 victory.

“The pitching staff, we’ve been doing our job,” Kyle Hendricks said. “We’ve been keeping the runs off the board as of late and offense has been providing enough, and the defense has been there. Just playing good baseball.”

That’s true but the Cubs’ offense will have show up as Maddon promised, especially for this week’s four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Playing without the resting Anthony Rizzo, the Cubs only had three hits Sunday, following Saturday’s game when they scored seven runs but none after the second inning.

So, is this how the Cubs will have to win?

“We’ll take it. That’s how

this game ebbs and flows and that’s what my point is.

You’ve got to pitch,” Maddon said. “I mean, the game could have been called ‘pitching’ as opposed to baseball, I really believe that. So when you do that and you catch the ball and you do good things on the basepaths and play the entire game of baseball then you have a chance to win under these circumstances.”

At least the Cubs should be getting some help from within.

Jorge Soler was activated from the disabled list before Sunday’s game and went 0 for 3, but could add an extra dimension to the lineup if he begins to produce.

Actually, Maddon said it makes the lineup “thicker.”

“It lengthens out the lineup,” Maddon said of Soler’s return. “Of course, you don’t have (Rizzo) in there today but everybody’s out there now and you get all the guys cooking a little bit better. It makes a dif-

ference.”

Based on how the Cubs offense has been recently, they could use that difference. On Sunday, Mat Latos held the Cubs to one hit and one run, turning another game into a tight, tense day that could have flipped on one error.

But Chris Denorfia, who scored after his pinch-double in the eighth was the Cubs’ first hit since the first inning, said that could be a positive going forward.

GOP searches for counter to Obama Republicans have tried to pin the lame duck label on President Obama for quite a while now. But for a lame duck, Obama is doing pretty well.

He won on Obamacare. He won on gay marriage. He won on trade. His party was even able to leverage a horrendous crime – the killings in Charleston – to put Republicans on the defensive over the Confederate flag.

A president’s approval rating, and his general image of success or failure, affect the candidate of his party seeking to succeed him. From that perspective, Obama’s victories are a gift to Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

Indeed, Clinton was quick to embrace the Supreme Court Affordable Care Act decision. “Yes!” she tweeted just minutes after the news broke.

“SCOTUS affirms what we know is true in our hearts & under the law: Health insurance should be affordable & available to all.”

A short time after Clinton’s statement, I sent notes to several Republican operatives, some working on presidential campaigns and some unaffiliated. How do GOP candidates deal with a president on a winning streak? How does it affect the campaign? Does it give Clinton a stronger hand?

The answers that came back showed a party struggling to figure out exactly how to deal with the Democrats’ recent run.

“Yes, he can claim some victories, but few of his own making and mostly due to other actors, for their own reasons, making things happen,” said Dave Carney, the New Hampshire-based strategist who advised Rick Perry in the last election. “He has become the Forrest Gump of presi-

Others saw Obama’s wins as mainly the work of a Washington establishment out of touch with economic suffering going on beyond the Beltway.

“President Obama and America’s elites are winning, winning, winning,” said Alex Castellanos, a longtime GOP strategist who is not affiliated with any campaign this time around. “Let the peasants eat cake, Obamacare and unemployment. A lot of steam is building up in the populist pressure cooker. In 2016, some very angry peasants are going to storm Washington with torches and pitchforks.”

One could spend a long time searching those statements for a single, fully coherent strategy to counter the president and neutralize the benefit his victories might confer on Hillary Clinton.

That’s not really a surprise, given that there are currently 13 declared candidates, with three more likely to come, in the race for the Republican nomination. But whichever course they choose, Republicans will have to connect with the people who lose when Obama wins.

But what’s going on now is bigger than simply Obamacare. The president is on a roll at the moment, and the Democrat who hopes to follow him to the White House is looking to roll along. Republicans need a focused strategy to stop that momentum. So far, the GOP is still looking.

At the bridge table, a player’s height is unimportant, but it is important to know what bids and plays you can trust – especially if that player is your partner.

In this deal, South was in four spades after a natural auction. It would have been best for South to discard a heart or club. Then, if East had persisted with a fourth diamond, declarer could have ruffed in the dummy, drawn trumps, and claimed. However, South ruffed the diamond and cashed a trump to get the bad news. She now went down, although she could have made the contract with excellent guesswork. The curious may work it out.

Arch supports usually are enough to treat flatfeet Dear Dr. K: At my son’s 12-year well-child visit, his doctor said that he may have flexible flatfeet.

What does that mean? Is it something that needs to be treated?

Dear Reader: A person is said to be flat-footed when the foot loses the gently curving arch on the inner side of the sole.

That’s why flatfeet sometimes are called “fallen arches.”

If the arch is flattened only when standing and returns when the foot is lifted off the ground, the condition is called flexible flatfoot. If the arch is never present, the condition is called rigid flatfoot. (I’ve put an illustration of flatfoot on my website, askdoctork.com.)

A fairly simple way to get an idea is to find a flat surface that looks different when it’s wet, like a concrete floor or walkway. Get your child’s feet wet. Then have the child stand on that concrete surface. If you can see the entire bottom of his foot in wet outline, the feet probably are flat.

Flexible flatfeet are considered normal in young children. The arch may not form fully until sometime between ages 7 and 10.

Even in adulthood, up to 25 percent of people have flexible flatfeet. In many of these adults, the missing arch is an inherited condition related to loose ligaments, fibrous tissues that connect bones to one another.

Most children and adults with flexible flatfeet never have symptoms.

However, their toes may point outward as they walk. A person who develops symptoms usually complains of tired, aching feet, especially after prolonged standing or walking.

A foot specialist will examine your son’s shoes to check for signs of excessive wear.

Worn shoes often provide valuable clues to poor bone alignment and problems with gait. (Gait describes how your

feet and legs move when you walk.)

The doctor will ask your son to walk barefoot to evaluate his arches, to check for out-toeing and to look for other signs of poor foot mechanics.

The doctor will also examine his feet for flexibility and range of motion and feel for tenderness or bony abnormalities.

When flatfoot does not cause symptoms, no treatment is needed. For mild pain or aching, over-the-counter pain relievers may be effective.

If your son does have symptoms, doctors have several treatments to offer.

The easiest (and least expensive) are store-bought arch supports.

These are enough for many people. If the doctor thinks your son needs more support, he or she may prescribe a customized, therapeutic shoe insert made from a mold of your son’s foot, or a corrective shoe.

These devices support the arch and correct any imbalance in the mechanics of the foot.

This not only helps to relieve pain, but also prevents foot and joint damage.

Surgery to improve foot alignment is typically a last resort for people with significant pain that does not respond to other therapies.
