Sereno happy to give back to community

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchampman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A new mural can be seen on the side of a Grundy County Sheriff’s Office building on Illinois Avenue in Morris.

Former Morris alderman Ken Sereno worked with and paid Midwest Signworks to create the mural, which is an update to a one before it, but also directs visitors to the Grundy County Historical Society, Christian Youth Center of Morris, Morris Theatre Guild, Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice and Community Foundation of Grundy

County – all located inside the Canalport Community Center.

“I was in business 48 years, that was my work, so I figured I have something to give back,” Sereno said.

Earlier this summer, Sereno resigned from the Morris City Council after 34 years as an alderman.

The mural depicts the “A. Lincoln” canal boat on the I&M Canal and has been in the works for about a year, Sereno said. The illustration depicts an actual canal boat that used to be based in Morris in 1861, he said.

“I thought it was appropriate along the canal,” Sereno said.

This is not the first project Sereno and his wife, Joan, have funded to help improve their city. In 2008, the couple purchased a steel arch over Canalport Park and added some steel structures at the Canalport Plaza, as well as helped with a mural on Cal’s Printing that even includes Sereno in the mural itself.

In addition to the mural being aesthetically pleasing, Mayor Richard Kopczick pointed out the practicality of the mural and how it directs visitors to where both the Canalport Park and Canalport Community Center are.

“It’s a great thing for our community,” Kopczick said.

“Ken and his lovely wife, Joanné, have always been so supportive of the city of Morris.”

• Michael I. Vazquez, 27, of Morris, was arrested

by Morris police Wednesday on two warrants on charges of possession of cannabis and retail theft.

• Amanda C. James, 22, of Minooka, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a charge of driving under the influence.

She also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding. She was given an Aug. 24 court date.

• Alan S. Becker, 32, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Wednesday on a charge of criminal trespass to property.

• Andrew Woodin, 31, of Marseilles, was arrested by Marseilles police Wednesday on charges of domestic battery and interfering with the report of domestic battery.

“I haven’t encountered a headache that I wasn’t able to provide relief from in less than six minutes,” certified clinical aromatherapist Dawn Duffy said.

Before a peppermint oil was passed around the room, Duffy asked the audience how they felt so she could select an oil that would help the group’s symptoms. Several replied they were tired, so Duffy chose peppermint because it energizes. In fact, she said, athletes have begun applying peppermint oils for energy in workouts.

“I rubbed it on my neck and could really feel the coolness of it, too,” John Kleinfeldt said.

Land Use Committee talks county cleanup

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A home at 855 E. Pine Bluff Road in rural Morris is an eyesore after burning down in 2013, according to Grundy County Land Use Director Heidi Miller, who on Wednesday asked the Land Use Committee to seek a demolition order for the home.

The house was owned by Jason and Rhonda Lawford at the time of the fire, which was ruled an arson by Illinois State Police, according to Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan.

Jason Lawford died in January 2014 just before he was supposed to go before a grand jury regarding an indictment related to the fire, Callahan said.

State police handled the case because Jason Lawford worked as a correctional officer for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, and Rhonda Lawford is a local dispatcher.

The property now is owned by Rhonda Lawford.

“We’ve gotten a lot of complaints from residents who are trying to sell or who feel the property is lowering the value of their homes,” Miller said.

She said the home couldn’t be demolished immediately following the fire because of the arson investigation, but Rhonda Lawford received a permit July 31, 2014, for demolition of the home.

“The permit is good for one year. After Friday, the permit will not be good,” Miller said.

Miller said it would cost the county $12,000 to demolish the home, and the funds would not be retrievable until the property is sold.

She also said if the county proceeds with demolition, the basement will be caved in, the septic tank crushed, and the well would be sealed.

“It’s a shame if she plans to rebuild that we have to knock it in,” board member Dick

Joyce said at Wednesday’s committee meeting.

All of those factors would be an added expense if the owner chose to rebuild at the Pine Bluff address.

“It is currently a court case, and the insurance is not paying on it,” Miller said. “The owner doesn’t have the money to demolish it.”

Board member Mike Onorato said his concern is if the ongoing litigation prohibits the county to demolish the structure.

Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Dearth said the county would have to look into the litigation to make sure there isn’t a hold on the destruction as a piece of evidence in the lawsuit.

He said the county also will have to do a title search to make sure there isn’t a lien on the property or other owners.

Demolition of the structure if owned by others could open the county to litigation.

A call Wednesday to Rhonda Lawford was not immediately returned.

Inoperable vehicles a concern

Attention also was brought to a Dwight Road residence where three inoperable vehicles are sitting, creating a potential hazard.

Miller said staff has addressed the removal of the vehicles with the owner of the property, who said he would have them moved, but he has yet to do so.

A 30-day notice was given in June, after the owner requested that amount of time to address the issue. It expired Monday.

The committee asked the state’s attorney’s office to look into what steps can be taken to legally remove the vehicles.

6 Coal City school board approves vacation time changes for tornado victims

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City Community Unit School District 1 held a special meeting Wednesday night before its monthly workshop to address days missed by staff due to the tornado. The board unanimously approved to pay or carryover vacation days for six staff members who had to miss work because of damage to their home or a family member’s home from the June 22 EF3 tornado.

“The issue is, by June 22, staff has either used their vacation time, or they were scheduled to take vacation before June 30,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said Thursday. “The way our policy is written, it is either use it or lose it. We don’t carryover vacation days or pay them out.”

The school’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, so for most staff vacation days are used long before June 22.

Bugg said 12-month employees, including administrative staff and maintenance staff, were the ones affected.

“I had staff who had vacation planned [whom] I had to ask not to take it because of the damage,” Bugg said.

Change permits receive positive recommendations; vote due next week

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Planning Commission positively recommended Wednesday two requests from property owners that are set to be considered Monday by the Morris City Council.

MKM Oil Inc., owners of the property at 150 Commercial St., home to a BP gas station, requested a minor subdivision of the already subdivided property. The purpose of the subdivision is to eliminate unnecessary easements on the property.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said Thursday the property already is subdivided into four lots with buildings, the gas station and car wash on two of them. But the property

commission sent a positive recommendation on it to the city council.

The sale of the property to Wessel and Ballard is contingent on the permit being approved, Cheshareck said.

Wessel, an architect whom Cheshareck said made wonderful additions to a property on nearby Fulton Street, plans to remodel the home.

The home has a one-bedroom apartment on the second floor and three bedrooms on the first floor. Cheshareck said it has an exterior staircase to the apartment, but it will be removed for an interior staircase.

8 Manhattan church to hold relief concert for Coal City residents

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – When Dan Hudson, pastor of Sanctuary Church in Manhattan, reached out to Peter Mayer and asked him to headline a disaster relief concert for the residents of Coal City, Mayer said he was happy to help.

Mayer, who has played with Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band and now performs with his own band – The Peter Mayer Group – has a natural heart for ministry and appreciates Hudson’s church outreach foundation.

“Dan is a really good friend of mine,” Mayer said, “and it gives our work and playing gravity when it serves to make a lot of good happen in a community.”

Mayer, who said he was born in India where his parents were missionaries, said his group will play a variety of folk/rock/pop originals, as well as several covers by artists such as The Beatles, James Taylor, and Simon and Garfunkel.

Several Manhattan business owners also have locations in Coal City, and Manhattan residents like to eat at Coal City restaurants, Hudson said, so many people feel a natural connection and desire to help.

The goal of the concert – called Coal City Strong – is to raise at least $10,000 that will directly benefit Coal City families, Hudson said. Any sponsorship that goes beyond the benefit’s expenses also will go into that relief fund.

An account – Coal City Relief Fund – is set up at Homestar Bank for that purpose, Hudson added.

“We’ve been working with the mayor of Coal City to find the best way to connect with local families,” Hudson said.

Hudson said he has heard heartrending stories from people faced with the reality of

putting their homes and lives back together – low-income families who can’t pay insurance deductibles as well as people struggling to put food back on the shelves.

That’s what makes Peter Mayer an ideal choice to headline the entertainment.

“He grew up on the mission field,” Hudson said. “He’s just an active Christian guy who likes to help wherever he can.”

The same is true for members of Sanctuary. Some went so far as to form the nonprofit Manhattan Friendship Garden, a 3-acre vegetable plot where all the produce is donated to local food pantries.

“Every year, they give away over 20,000 pounds of food,” Hudson said.

Other features of Coal City Strong include inflatable toys, bean bag toss games, food vendors, a performance by the Sanctuary Band and three raffles: an inflatable rental, a Blackhawks special-edition bean bag game set and a Peter Mayer signed guitar.

Kleinfeldt, of Morris, was the only male in attendance by joining his daughter at the workshop. He mixed epsom and sea salt with lemon grass oil and grapefruit for what he

called a relaxing combination.

He appeared to enjoy the peppermint, but is in the market for something calming. He told Duffy probiotic Arm & Hammer deodorant produced poor results.

“I’m getting to the point where I’m allergic to some commercial products, so I thought coming to this might be the answer,” he said.

Sarah Fisher was also looking for a calming body scrub and chose lavender oil. She said when her daughter was born 14 years ago at Morris Hospital, healing oils had just started gaining popularity.

The nurses placed lavender oils in her hospital room.

“It’s been lavender in our house ever since,” she said.

Fisher, who also works at Morris Area Public Library, said the library aims to have three free adult events each month.

On Aug. 6, the library is hosting an ancestry.com workshop where everyone can research their family history without paying because the library has a subscription. The lecture and workshop will be led by library director Lorene Kennard and spaces are already reserved.

Mary C. Larkin (nee Whitmer), age 68, passed away July 26, 2015, at Morris Hospital surrounded by her loving children.

She is survived by two daughters, Katie (Ken) Nelson of Joliet, Colleen (Art) Arias of Diamond; and one son, Robert W. Larkin of Morris. Mary was the much-loved and adored Grandma to seven grandchildren, Nicolas Arias, Ezequiel Arias, Junior Arias, Maxwell Arias, Alexia Arias, Amanda Nelson and Molly Nelson.

Mary was born on April 27, 1947 to the late Harry and Lois (Singletary) Whitmer in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was a graduate of St. Patrick Grade School and St. Francis Academy, Class of 1965.

On Oct. 16, 1965, Mary married Robert E. “Bob” Larkin at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Joliet. While married for nearly fifty years, they raised their family in Joliet before moving to the homestead they loved in Morris. Together they established their farming business throughout the Joliet, Minooka and Morris areas.

Mary worked as a telephone supervisor at Illinois Bell. As she and Bob started a family, her greatest joy became being a homemaker and devoted mother. The love for her family she exhibited every day through her nurturing, attentiveness and laughter.

Also surviving are two sisters, Jane (Joseph) Riggs of Joliet and Beth (Theodore) Poplawski of Shorewood; one brother, William (Mary) Whitmer of Joliet; one brother-in-law, Donald (Jo Beth) Larkin of Minooka; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob (November 8, 2014); brothers-in-law, Bernard (the late Mary) Larkin, Ronald Larkin; and step-mother, Jean (Kaffer) Whitmer.

Mary was a long time parishioner of the Church of St. Jude.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Mary’s oncology team at JOHA in Morris, especially her two outstanding nurses, Shannon and Lisa.

COAL CITY – Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 E. McArdle Road, Coal City, invites the community to its “Hallelujah” Pork Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m.

Lafond takes over Morris volleyball reins

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When she was a standout athlete at Morris Community High School in the early 2000s, Taylor Lafond, who was Taylor Tesdal back then, never thought she would return to MCHS as a coach.

In fact, after graduating from Eastern Illinois University, she got a job teaching in Virginia Beach, Taylor Virginia.

But the lure Lafond of her hometown was strong, and eventually she moved back.

“I had heard that Mrs. [former Morris pyhsical edu-

cation teacher Jane] Vahle’s job would be coming open,” Lafond said. “So I thought I would go for it. I actually got hired a year before Mrs. Vahle retired. It’s true what they say.

Redskin pride never dies.”

From then on, Lafond began teaching physical education and health, as well as coaching the same three sports she had played as a Redskin – volleyball, basketball and softball.

She gave up coaching basketball two years ago when her son, Tate, was born.

Eight months ago, she and her husband, Morris teacher and golf coach Matt Lafond, had another baby boy, Ty. On July 13, the Morris school board approved her as the Redskins’ new varsity vol-

leyball coach after the resignation of Jackie Litwiller.

“That was kind of a surprise,” Lafond said of Litwiller’s departure. “We were sitting at lunch during one of our summer camps and she came in and said that she got a new position.”

Litwiller guided the Redskins to an 18-15 record last year and has left Lafond with a well-stocked roster.

“There are still some big shoes to fill from last year’s team, but we do have some nice bulding blocks to start with,” Lafond said. “We have three starters back from last year.

“I am very thankful to Jackie that she had everything together and organized.

That will definitely help. The

timing is a little close to the season, but Jackie has been very helpful. She has helped with a lot of the little things that I never had to do before, but now that I am in charge of the whole program, I have to.”

The familiarity between Lafond and the players will be key in making the transition as smooth as possible.

“The girls have been very good,” Lafond said. “They have a lot of passion. They have been coming to open gyms and working hard in the offseason. Especially with a coaching change, that’s good to see. I think it has helped that I have coached most of the girls before on the JV level.

Some of them I have coached since junior high when I was a coach at Shabbona.

“It’s going to be different coaching on the varsity level, but it’s nice to know that I will know the girls and what they can do and how they work with each other.”

Lafond felt that Litwiller had the program headed in the right direction, so she doesn’t see herself changing much.

“My notes section on my iPad is just full of random thoughts right now,” she said.

“I really don’t want to change much of what Jackie was doing. I would like to keep us at that competitive level.”

Practice officially starts for the Morris volleyball team Aug. 12.

The Redskins open the season Aug. 24 at home against Lincoln-Way North before hosting Coal City on Aug. 27.

Most of us remember studying butterflies in school.

Science teachers in my own building have bought kits that allow students to watch these amazing creatures make their metamorphosis and emerge as the winged insect we are fascinated with.

It is always a big deal on the release day to watch these creatures take flight and make their way in the world.

Several months ago I wrote an article depicting the plight on the monarch butterfly in North America. This month’s National Geographic has an interesting page on the topic and provides some ways in which each of us can help restore the black and orange insect to its pre-decline numbers. I thought it would be appropriate to write a follow up story.

Most scientists are under the common belief the rapid fall of monarch numbers directly relates to loss of habitat. The butterfly relies

on the milkweed as a place to lay its eggs. I know I have spent time as a kid pulling apart milkweed pods in total awe of its fluffy innards. The monarch is impressed with these plants as well. So much so, without it, survival is difficult.

The prevalent use of herbicides has eradicated many of the milkweed plants the monarchs need to continue their life cycle.

In the early 1990s, the population was estimated to be somewhere around one billion individuals. Currently, that number is thought to be around 50 million butterflies. No matter how we look at it, that is a steep reduction in numbers. So how can we help?

Dan Ashe, of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, said we can turn this trend around with a little strategic gardening.

He said the biggest challenge is to make sure local

This is a project individual homeowners can participate in as well as larger organizations such as schools, municipal buildings, and even state and federal parks. The range of the monarch includes all of North America and milkweed populations need to be available to them in all 48 lower states, in addition to Mexico and Canada.

Ashe was asked if the monarch population could be turned around. “It’s hard to tell,” he said. “Species are resilient, but there can be a tipping point, and we don’t know where that is with

monarchs.”

The Fish and Wildlife Service has created a website that gives valuable information on how individuals can help.

The address is www.fws. gov/savethemonarch. The site talks about funding that is available for projects, including schoolyard butterfly gardens. There is information on monarch migration and links to numerous articles describing milkweed restoration efforts all over the country.

Conservation is critical. It doesn’t matter where you lie on the broad spectrum of outdoor enthusiasts. Taking care of nature is our responsibility. This monarch program is an excellent way to introduce children to the outdoors and teach them how important it is to take an active role in conservation.

Imagine the smiles on their faces if they see monarchs using the milkweeds

they helped to plant.

Hopefully, with education and a united effort throughout North America, we can reverse the troubling trend of the declining monarch population. Seeing the massive migrations move through the area is something everyone should have the opportunity to experience.

It will be interesting to keep tabs on this topic as it unfolds. This nation has witnessed conservation triumphs far and wide.

There have been species that slipped through our fingers before we were able to help stem the tide.

Let’s catch this population decline before things reach the tipping point. Until then, look up the Fish and Wildlife Service website and plant a milkweed garden to help those monarchs.

Prosek to keep Minooka success

Greenup aims for STARS elite

When Carrie Prosek left the Minooka boys program for maternity leave, her family knew she would make her way back to coaching high school.

There was one requirement, however.

“I would never leave Minooka. I love teaching at Minooka,” Prosek said. “... I love the sports, the program, the community involvement. I would never leave.”

Waiting for the right position has paid finally off. Prosek was named Minooka’s new girls varsity volleyball coach. Unlike many coaches who start working with a new team, Prosek won’t really need time to adjust to new surroundings. She is a physical education teacher and an athletic conditioning coach,

On top of that, Prosek has watched the Minooka teams and knows how Chris Hoelscher ran the program. “[Hoelscher] ran a very good program,” Prosek said.

“She was a very good coach, and we’re similar, kind of. I watched her coach through the years, and I’ve had several good conversations with her. I highly respect how she ran the program. I’m walking in where it’s already developed. I don’t have to restart the program because she did a good job.”

Because she doesn’t have to change the program, Prosek just has to add to it.

Before her new position

at Minooka, Prosek coached UNO Volleyball Club’s 14 Elite girls team and 17 Elite boys team, was the graduate assistant at Missouri-Kansas City, and was the club director for Adrenaline Volleyball Club.

Before she began coaching, she played at Charleston Southern University as an outside hitter and a middle blocker.

Most hitting positions aren’t known for their defense, but Prosek holds the school record for digs.

Now it’s her time to shine as Minooka’s girls head coach. She’s taking it one moment at a time, however.

“I’m very excited,” Prosek said. “It was perfect timing. I wasn’t looking for the job to open. I applied when it did.

[Hoelscher] left me with a nice program, a very young program, but they had a phenomenal freshman team last year and, obviously, a phenomenal varsity team.”

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – As July comes to a close, D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget points leader Brad Greenup looks to continue his hot from the first four races.

On Saturday at Grundy County Speedway, Greenup looks to become the fourth driver in STARS history to win four or more races in one season.

That feat is held by defending champion Austin Prock, three-time champion Jim Anderson and all-time wins leader Kyle Hamilton.

“I have always looked up to Jimmy since I first got in the seat of a national midget,” Greenup said. “I tried to model myself after him on and off the track. I feel he is one of the best drivers I have raced against and to have my name on any list next to him would be an honor.

“Jimmy, Kyle and Austin, you knew would be the ones you would have to hold off or pass to get a win so to accom-

plish something only those three have done would be a great achievement for me.”

Greenup currently holds a 28 point lead over Tyler Baran heading into Saturday’s halfway point.

“I’m lucky to be only 28 points behind,” Baran said. “I feel like we are close and have the speed to win any night, just need lady luck to come to our side.

“The tough part about this season is that each night there are contenders up and down the pits that can win on any given night. To win the championship will be a survival of the fittest and consistency will be more important than ever. We can’t afford a bad night,” The second half of the STARS season kicks off Saturday, with the gates opening at 4:30 p.m.

The first race will take place at 6 p.m.
