New Morris High choral and musical director aims to build program

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In his own words, Ben Brown was an “awkward kid” who was picked on in middle school.

While attending Mundelein High School, basketball coaches hated that Brown and his brother, both about 6-foot-4, couldn’t make use of their height on the court. But Brown’s niche of singing and performing developed at the same time. He was in three musicals and two plays before graduating in 2007. Since then, he has grown out of his shell.

“I found something I was good at,” Brown said.

As the newly hired choral and musical director at Morris Community High School, Brown hopes to develop similar transformations in his students.

“I live for the kids who come in awkward,” Brown said. “I’ve seen the transformations firsthand.”

After graduating from Millikin University, where he studied vocal music education, Brown landed a job at Trico Community School District in Campbell Hill in southern Illinois. He taught from 2011 to 2014 in the roughly 900-student, kindergarten through 12th-grade district.

The first seven-student ensemble Brown taught was made up of six females and one male. The young man was shy, sat at the end of the row and kept to himself. By the end of the year, the young man had a solo and joked with classmates. By his senior year, he was outgoing, funny and an asset to the program.

“It was a great example of what fine arts can do for somebody,” Brown said.

A big challenge in fine arts, Brown said, is finding male participants. Morris High School just graduated a strong male class, and Brown will

In his time at Trico, the choir and musical program grew from 18 to 35 students by the second semester, and to 80 students when he left for the all-girl Queen of Peace High School in Burbank.

Brown said he wants to grow the Morris program from about 80 to the potential that a 1,000-student school can offer.

“We could have 200 students [in the program] in a school this size,” Brown said.

“The job was so attractive because it’s a tight community but there’s 1,000 students.”

Committee sends proposal to full board

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD MORRIS – A new animal shelter focused on saving cats will be on the August Grundy County Board agenda after the Land Use Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to send it to the full board for a vote.

Lois Dyer of Coal City applied to use a home on property she owns at 2625 Jugtown Road, Coal City to be converted to a shelter for up to 25 cats, who will be housed there until they can be adopted.

“It has been recommended that we can house 25 cats,” Dyer told the committee. “We had a shelter in Wilmington

for one year before the owner wanted his building back. We found good homes for most of the cats we had.”

Dyer said she originally organized the COPE Animal Shelter in 2003 in Joliet, where she focused on spaying and neutering feral cats, as well as caring for the feral cat population.

The organization has grown and changed, and before their shelter in Wilmington closed in February, they regularly housed about 15 cats and provided them care until they could get to adopted homes.

Coal City discusses water surcharges

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The village of Coal City has come across some policy issues in regards to the water and sewer surcharges that appear on homeowners’ bills to pay off existing Illinois Environmental Protection Agency loans.

The issues arise for the homes who no longer have water service due to the EF3 tornado that hit the area June 22, according to Village Administrator Matt Fritz.

“It has been reviewed, and from a legal perspective, once service is dormant, we can’t charge the surcharge,” Fritz said Monday during the village’s Finance Committee meeting. “From a legal perspective, we can’t, so we won’t.”

This brought up the issue of who will pay for water at sites where construction is being completed and when will the village consider an account no

longer dormant.

Village officials said construction water usage needs to be billed because of reports the village is required to make to the IEPA, which includes the amount of water wasted.

Fritz said the village doesn’t want those report numbers to rise while homes are being constructed.

“Someone has to pay for the water,” Village President Terry Halliday said at the meeting. “Otherwise, the resident will say it’s the contractor’s obligation and the contractor will say it’s the homeowner’s responsibility.”

At least 60 homes are unable to have water delivered, and after structural reviews are done, the village expects about 100 water accounts will be dormant.

Because the homes will be built at different times by dif-

ferent contractors, Fritz said he doesn’t expect any of those accounts with surcharges to be back up until at least nine months from now, with many more possibly taking longer.

The village now is forced to find a way to continue meeting IEPA loan payments.

The loans were used to update and replace water and sewer infrastructure in the early 2000s, village trustee Neal Nelson said Wednesday.

“The loans were in place before 2007 when I was elected,” Nelson said. “They are set to expire in a few years.”

Fritz said one option the village is looking into is contacting the IEPA to see if an option exists to make lower payments because those homes can’t use the water.

It’s an investment.

Earlier this year, JJC introduced the operations engineering and technician program that will begin this fall. The program is the result of partnership between the community college, several businesses and local elected officials to respond to the needs for more employees trained for jobs offered by industrial and energy companies.

TransCanada gave JJC $10,000 on Wednesday to pay for industrial maintenance and technology equipment for the new degree program.

Jaskoski said because the company has a Tinley Park office that manages daily regional operations for two big pipelines, this donation was an investment in a future workforce.

“We view this as an opportunity to become part of the Joliet community and help it grow for generations to come,” he said. “For employees to come to school here, get the skills and the expertise needed to go out and fill these positions that are becoming available, energy is something that’s not going away.”

He said even though energy industries are “more or less impervious to economic ups and downs,” employees

Hearing from local industry and energy leaders about potential waves of retirement was what led to state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, to speak with JJC officials about creating a new degree program to meet the need for more skilled employees.

She said Grundy County was 20 times as many energy jobs and five times as many chemical jobs as similar markets.

“I always call and consider this area the energy and chemical corridor of America,” she said.

The jobs students will go for in petrochemical, nuclear and manufacturing industries are expected to be lucrative. Rezin said the earning potential for operation engineers ranges between $65,000 to $95,000 a year.

The growth for those jobs, as well as operation technicians, is expected to grow at an estimated 15 percent or more in several years, she said.

JJC technical department faculty provided a tour of several classrooms to local elected officials, TransCanada representatives and Illinois Secretary of Education Elizabeth Purvis, in order to show how students can be trained for jobs.

One of the classrooms they took a peek at featured a water pump lab.

Jeff Bradford, an industrial maintenance technology program lead instructor, said he was excited about the donation from TransCanada, saying those contributions help educate the students.

“It’s always a struggle with the college’s budgeting and state funding. To have a company write a check allows us to get stuff like this,” he said, referring to the water pump lab.

When Purvis took on the role as state education secretary, she said Gov. Bruce Rauner told her he wanted to see more students in the state graduate from schools to become citizens with rewarding and meaningful careers. The

She said this program will keep the “best and brightest” in Illinois and could be copied statewide.

“We want to create what we would call ‘accelerator zones,’

where we take programs like this and say ‘We want to learn from the community. How have you done this?’ And my job would be take it to other places in the state to make sure it’s replicated,” Purvis said.

State fees paid in protest

For the first time in years, Trustee Houchens voted to approved payment to the state for national pollution discharge permits, but not before he was clear that they would be paid under protest.

For 17 years the fees have annually been paid in protest because village officials believe they are a way for the state to balance its budget by passing costs down to taxpayers.

Houchens, who has been more verbal about the issue in the past, voted in favor. Trustee Dick Parrish voted against two of the three bills, which cost the village $18,500 this year. The measure passed 4-1.

William R. White, former Tuskegee Airman, dies at 88 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SMITHFIELD, Virginia – William R. White, a former member of the famed squadron of African-American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, has died. He was 88.

White was a humble family man who rarely talked about his war experiences, family members said Wednesday.

White died July 24 at his home in Smithfield, his son Brandon White told The Associated Press.

Brandon White and his sister Inetha Holmes said they did not learn that their father was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II until a couple of years ago.

As children, they would ask him about an Army Air Corps photo that he had, but

he would not say much about it.

“He wouldn’t go into detail about anything,” Brandon White said. “He was very humble, humble to a fault.”

William White, a Smithfield native, was drafted into the Army Infantry in 1945.

He transferred to the Army Air Corps, and then was assigned to the 99th Pursuit Squadron and 332nd Fighter Group.

He said during a 2013 talk at the Isle of Wight County Museum that he serviced the unit’s planes to keep them in the air, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the U.S. military’s first African-American aviators.

The group went on to take part in more than 1,500 com-

bat missions, earning more 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses.

In a 2013 interview with WVEC-TV, William White said he and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen had to fight two wars, one with the enemy and the other with racism.

“Everything we did we had to fight for it,” he said. “And they wanted us to fail, but they forgot one thing. We, as blacks, we were very gifted.

And gifts come from whom?

Brandon White said his father did what he felt he had to do in regards to serving in the war.

“He would always say that, ‘America was the only home I know,’ ” he said.

Funeral services will be held Thursday.

On Oct. 16, 1965, Mary married Robert E. “Bob” Larkin at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Joliet. While married for nearly fifty years, they raised their family in Joliet before moving to the homestead they loved in Morris. Together they established their farming business throughout the Joliet, Minooka and Morris areas.

Mary worked as a telephone supervisor at Illinois Bell. As she and Bob started a family, her greatest joy became being a homemaker and devoted mother. The love for her family she exhibited every day through her nurturing, attentiveness and laughter.

Also surviving are two sisters, Jane (Joseph) Riggs of Joliet and Beth (Theodore) Poplawski of Shorewood; one brother, William (Mary) Whitmer of Joliet; one brother-in-law, Donald (Jo Beth) Larkin of Minooka; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob (November 8, 2014); brothers-in-law, Bernard (the late Mary) Larkin, Ronald Larkin; and step-mother, Jean (Kaffer) Whitmer.

Mary was a long-time parishioner of the Church of St. Jude.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Mary’s oncology team at JOHA in Morris, especially her two outstanding nurses, Shannon and Lisa.

Pioneer of Poland’s richest CPR technique businessman, Jan Kulczyk, dies at age 87 The ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI – Dr. James Jude, one of the experts credited with pioneering life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, has died. He was 87.

Peter Jude says his father died early Tuesday in Coral Gables after an extended illness.

Jude says his father always wanted to help people, noting CPR has saved countless lives.

In the late 1950s, the doctor and two electrical engineers, William Kouwenhoven and Guy Knickerbocker, did research which led to their development of chest compression in 1960. This was later combined with work by others on artificial respiration to become CPR. He maintained a private practice from 1971 until 2000.

He was 65.

Poland’s former president, Lech Walesa, said that Kulczyk was irreplaceable.

“It will be hard to organize some things without him.”

Kulczyk donated generously to culture and history. His donation of some 20 million zlotys ($5.3 million) helped finish the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

“He has a great rapport with the students,” Goetting said. “He understands them and gets things out of them that other teachers don’t.”

Goetting believes Brown will carry those qualities over to Morris, where Brown takes over for friend and fellow Millikin graduate Alyssa Napolitano, who resigned after the 2014-15 year.

Brown recalled when he visited Napolitano at Morris High School and was amazed that she had assistance from others in productions, which is something Brown is looking forward to.

Classes begin at 7:55 a.m. and dismissal will be at 11 a.m.

Pannaralla completed an intensive, eight-week program which included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physi-

cal fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Softball stars help make summer training fun

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com SENECA – For the past six years, Seneca softball coach Dan Stecken has been conducting a softball camp for girls from second through eighth grade.

This year, his camp, which was held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, had around 50 players attend to get instruction from not only him, but also former Irish stars Nicole Pihl, who plays for DePaul University, and Sarah Radtke, who plays for Illinois Valley Community College.

Former Seneca standouts Alanna Viken, who recently graduated from Quincy University, and Madi Shanks from Illinois Valley Community College, have been instructors at the camp in the past, but work obligations prevented them from being there this year.

“It’s nice to have the girls come back and help out,” Stecken said. “A lot of these younger girls have looked up to players like Nicole and Sarah, so to be taught by them is a lot of fun.”

Along with the former players, current Seneca team members Abby Klicker, Karlie Cade, Lyda Robinson and Rachel Sangston were on hand to offer their help, as well as Seneca Junior High softball assistant coach Jenn Zelko, a Morris High School graduate.

After warming up Wednesday, the campers broke off into position drills with different teachers.

Radtke grouped with the third basemen, Robinson with the shortstops, Cade with the second basemen, Pihl with the first basemen, Klicker with the catchers and Zelko with the outfielders.

While in the smaller groups, players worked on the finer points of playing that position. For example, third basemen practice backhanding a ball down the line and then charging and barehanding a bunt. The shortstops work on balls in the hole, covering second on a steal and turning a double play. Second basemen work on turning a double play,

“These girls are the future of Seneca softball. That was a big and important part of my life, and I want to help make it a big part of their lives, too. We have a lot of fun here, and we try to break up into smaller groups so the kids don’t get bored.”

After the individual position training, campers broke off into two groups and held a simulated scrimmage against live pitching.

On Tuesday, camp organizers added some fun to the drills.

A piece of plastic was made slick with a hose and the players practiced sliding into bases and diving for balls. In the batting cage, fruits such as apples, kiwis, pears and mangoes were thrown and the players

tried to hit them.

“The girls have a lot of fun with those drills,” Stecken said. “And, they serve a purpose. Some of the younger girls don’t know how to slide properly yet and some are a little afraid to dive after a ball.

Doing it on the slip-and-slide teaches them to do it and they won’t get hurt. The fruit drill improves their hand-eye coordination because the fruit is smaller than a softball. They hit the fruit, then when they

see a softball, it’s so much bigger and a lot easier to hit.

“Plus, it’s just fun to hit fruit with a bat and play on a slip-and-slide.”

Radtke, who was recovering from shoulder surgery this spring at IVCC and didn’t play as much as she would have liked, enjoys coming back to her home to help.

“It was exciting to be asked to come back,” she said.

“These girls are the future of Seneca softball. That was a big and important part of my life, and I want to help make it a big part of their lives, too. We have a lot of fun here, and we try to break up into smaller groups so the kids don’t get bored.

‘Illinois Valley has a good program, but nothing beats Mr. Stecken. It was a lot different this year. The practices were only an hour or so. It wasn’t as intense or as fun as it was here.”

During the summer, Radtke has been helping coach the Illinois Irish travel team, along with Pihl.

No NFL team’s training camp is officially open until the head coach and general manager greet the media, dodge as many of their questions as they can and lay out a general outline of what they hope to accomplish in the coming days and weeks.

As camp openers go, Ryan Pace’s and John Fox’s were both a B to a B-minus.

The good news Wednesday is that these guys seem pretty normal as NFL types go, a welcome relief after spending the last couple of early Augusts quizzing Dr. Strangelove and Mr. Peabody. Please don’t misunderstand – Phil Emery and Marc Trestman are two of the nicer guys I’ve been fortunate to cover in my years on the beat, but it never really felt as if we were talking football with football guys.

Pace is the rising young star, buzzing with enthusiasm and a literal gleam in his eyes in answer to almost every question. After last season, the lockerroom and team chemistry are going to be an ongoing topic for this group until it forms its own identity.

Pace thinks he’ll know when they’ve got it right.

“I think you just feel it. I think a tough, physical camp, and we’ll try to create that as much as we can with the new CBA rules, but I think you can just feel that forming over time. Both of us have been around successful teams, and you know when that is occurring.”

Fox, on the other hand, is the been there, done that guy, able to answer almost every question by relating to something in his past experience.

“Leadership is a key element in any group dynamic. The more you can enable players to accept those responsibilities and the accountability that comes with that, the more growth you can have in a group dynamic.”

When asked if he was ever in a camp with the Saints where so many starting jobs were up for grabs, Pace made

an interesting analogy.

“For us in New Orleans, it was probably in 2006. There were a lot of unknown factors, and I think we might have gotten two or three starters off the final cuts of the preseason that weren’t even with us

during training camp. So it kind of tells you where that roster was.”

That team was coming off a 3-13 2005 season and went 10-6.

Does Pace expect the same of this group? Asked about a reasonable expectation for

the season, Fox replied, “You know – to get better every day.

“I’ve never put wins or losses on it, I have no idea, but I know if you get better every day, when you look up, things are usually pretty good. So it’ll be more the process and

not really the results. If you can focus on the process every day, the results take care of themselves.”

Mourning and second chances “This pain will come as a thief in the night. It will take away your peace if you let it; it will drag you into the harsh darkness of the misery of loss,” Maria Grizzetti writes about the pain of losing a child. As undercover investigatory videos have surfaced revealing some of what goes on behind the scenes of the abortion industry, a lot of people are suffering, reliving choices made and thinking about the care and support they wish they’d had.

News about and political debates on these intimate issues can pour salt into wounds.

But this is the opportunity for something better. We can help women and men mourn and together build a civilization that is more hospitable to life.

“The reality of abortion is harsh, and the sorrow people who have been involved with abortion carry is often hidden,” Grizzetti tells me. “The videos reveal the hidden tragedy of each abortion. This is reason for greater compassion.

As a nation we must be more truly compassionate. We must not hide behind euphemisms to cover the harsh realities.

The more we know, the more we can do for those who suffer in silence.”

“We mourn with you,” said Serrin Foster, executive director of Feminist for Life. “We love you unconditionally.” She offers an additional word of welcome, on behalf of the prolife movement: “Later, when you are in a better place, you are welcome to help us move forward to systematically eliminate the reasons that drive women to abortion through resources and support.”

We don’t have to be the pro-life movement and the pro-choice movement. We can be generous Americans helping one another flourish,

And one other thing: If you are pregnant right now and need help, there are people who will help you. Visit a Women’s Care Center or similar organization. When I dropped by one in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ann Manion and Anne Koehl emphasized to me their agenda: They are there for what a woman needs.

They are there to help. Not to lecture. Not to proselytize. Not to judge. Don’t feel ashamed or be afraid. With that approach, they’ve gone from handing out diapers to saving lives.

Eleanor McCullen has been going to Planned Parenthood in Boston for 15 years. She stands outside with a grandmother’s smile. She’s there to say that is another choice. She offers her number and help, as well, to the women who walk out, having left something precious behind. “We’re a generous country,” she once told me. “But we’re not generous to the child in the womb” who is often “the poorest of the poor.”

With these latest videos, and the pain they expose, there is an opportunity to give what has been denied by law and culture: Hope, love and mercy.

There is freedom in being hidden no more. And there is a future for life.

Leave protection to the pros The shooting rampage that left four Marines and a sailor dead in Chattanooga last week should prompt the Pentagon to revisit restrictions on firearms at U.S. military centers, including recruitment centers such as the one the shooter fired on before his fatal attack at the Navy support center.

Existing gun regulations don’t seem sufficient to keep deadly weapons from the hands of individuals intent on committing evil acts, so it makes sense to allow military personnel – professionally and properly trained – to carry weapons.

It also is far preferable to what’s emerged in the wake of the rampage: self-appointed security forces camping outside recruitment centers, including at Glenbrook Commons. Stars and Stripes,

a news service covering military issues, reports the armed “guards” aren’t welcome.

“I’m sure the citizens mean well, but we cannot assume this in every case and we do not want to advocate this behavior,” according to an Army Command Operations Center-Security Division letter, Stars and Stripes reported.

The letter went on to say, “If questioned by these alleged concerned citizens, be polite, professional and terminate the conversation immediately” and tell authorities of the exchange.

The Army Recruiting Command letter expressed concern that the civilian forces were making applicants nervous and “disrupting our recruiting operations,” according to the

Houston Chronicle. Americans “are free to their right of assembly wherever it’s lawful,” said Brian Lepley of the Army Recruiting Command, but police had asked some volunteers “to stow their weapons.”

In Lancaster, Ohio, one of the guards accidentally fired an assault rifle at the ground.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

The guards are responding to a call from Oath Keepers, a loosely organized group of so-called patriots, to “Protect the Protectors.”

When the military politely asks its self-appointed protectors to stand down, they should. We’ll trust our military leaders to do what’s right to protect the men and women who serve.

In today’s deal, North redoubled to show 10-plus points with fewer than four spades. After West ran to two clubs, North rebid three spades to show game-forcing values with exactly three-card spade support. Now South used Blackwood before bidding seven spades.

West led the heart king. How should South have planned the play?

Note that over North’s redouble, South did not need to do anything – one spade redoubled was game, and overtricks would have been worth 400 points each.

South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, one heart, one diamond and three clubs. He has to do something with his club three.

It looks easy to draw trumps and ruff that low club in the dummy. But when South sees the 3-0 spade break, he must immediately turn to clubs.

He cashes his club ace-king and ruffs the club three with dummy’s spade ace – as long as he was careful to start trumps with a winner from his hand, not the ace on the board.

Note that if declarer cashes dummy’s spade ace at trick two, he goes down because East overruffs the dummy.

PUBLIC NOTICE SENECA FIRE PROTECTION & AMBULANCE DISTRICT LASALLE AND GRUNDY COUNTIES, ILLINOIS ANNUAL BUDGET AND APPROPRIATION ORDINANCE FOR THE FISCAL YEAR BEGINNING MAY 1, 2015 & ENDING APRIL 30, 2016 WHEREAS, there has been prepared in tentative form a Budget and Appropriation Ordinance for the SENECA FIRE PROTECTION & AMBULANCE DISTRICT for the fiscal year commencing on the 1st day of May, 2015 and ending on the last day of April, 2016, and the Secretary of said District has made the tentative Budget and Appropriation Ordinance conveniently available for public inspection for at least (30) days prior to final action thereupon; and WHEREAS, a public hearing was held as to such Budget and Appropriation Ordinance on July 9, 2015 at 8:00 p.m., at the Seneca Fire & Emergency Service Building at 121 W. Armour Street in the Village of Seneca, Illinois, notice of which was given at least thirty (30) days prior thereto, by publication as required by law, and all other legal requirements have been complied with.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE SENECA FIRE PROTECTION & AMBULANCE DISTRICT: Section 1: The fiscal year of the Fire Protection District be and the same is hereby fixed and declared to be from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2016.
