Shabbona eighth-graders now required to do community service

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – As of this coming school year, Shabbona Middle School eighth-graders will be required to complete community service hours to graduate.

Five hours will be necessary for the 2015-16 class; 10 hours for eighth-graders the following year; and 15 hours for classes in future years.

It’s all a part of learning the lessons of life that can’t be taught in the classroom, District 54 Principal Chris Maier said.

“We recognize that a lot of life lessons are learned outside the walls of Morris Elementary,” Maier said.

Students can be taught about service, he explained, but it doesn’t quite hit home until they actually get out into the community and do the hands-on work.

Lending a hand with the Coal City tornado cleanup this summer will definitely count toward those service hours, Maier said, even though the program officially doesn’t start until the school year does.

“We have such great kids at Morris Elementary,” he said, “that I’m sure some of them have already been out there with their parents, helping.”

Maier said administrators and school board members have been discussing for a few years the idea of required community service.

A Clothesline Across Campus program was begun at both White Oak Elementary and Shabbona Middle School to help local families in need of clothing, and White Oak raises money for the American Cancer Society through Relay Recess. Above those projects, the school decided additional hours outside the schools would be good for the students and for the community.

Shabbona seventh-grader Jon Henson already does community service at his church every Sunday, as he helps with the video and sound for the first- through fifth-grade Sunday school class at First Christian Church. He also helped out at Vacation Bible School this year.

“I think it’s a good idea to encourage kids to get out there and do community service hours,” said Teresa, Jon’s mother.

Immaculate Conception School has had service requirements for more than 20 years, Principal Kim DesLauriers said, although the requirement is linked to confirmation and not directly to graduation. ICS students must perform 25 hours of community service in seventh grade and another 15 hours in eighth grade.

“We define community service as giving freely of your time to help someone else without monetary compensation,” DesLauriers said.

ing an elderly neighbor with mowing the lawn or shoveling snow and volunteering for such events as St. Vincent’s Table, the Hunger Walk, the ICS Octoberfest, and summer Bible School.

DesLauriers said time spent helping the Coal City tornado victims would certainly count for the requirement.

Saratoga School Principal Joe Zweeres said his school rewards community service with a trip to a Kane County Cougars baseball game each May for eighth-graders who have complete 40 hours of community service.

Channahon Junior High School Principal Chad Uphoff said there are no graduation service requirements for eighth-graders at District 17, but students who participate in the district’s service club, Beta Club, receive extra recognition at the graduation ceremony.

“I think it’s so important for our kids to learn that it’s good to think beyond yourself,” Uphoff said.

Cloonen hosting ‘Coffee with Kate’

KANKAKEE – State Rep. Kate Cloonen is hosting a “Coffee with Kate” discussion from 8 to 9 a.m. July 17 at the Gardner Restaurant, 425 W. Main St. in Gardner.

Cloonen will provide a legislative update and then have open discussion with constituents. Cloonen often hosts “Coffee with Kate” conversation sessions in towns throughout the 79th District.

“Coffee with Kate” events are open to the public.

“Community participation and feedback are critical to guiding my priorities in the State Capitol,” Cloonen said in a news release. “I encourage all local residents to attend, join me for coffee, and discuss what is happening in Springfield and in our communities.”

Hard work pays off as pigs enter the pen to be judged Thursday morning

MORRIS – Sam Batson of Wilmington has been working since early February to be ready for this – the week he would bring his pigs to the Grundy County Agricultural Fair.

Batson, who has been showing pigs in 4-H and at county and state fairs for five years, said it takes a lot of work to get an animal ready to show.

“It’s pretty hard,” he said.

“You have to wash them and rinse them every day, be careful what you feed them and walk them twice a day.”

Batson said he thought three of the 18 pigs he is raising this year were good enough to compete at the Grundy County Fair – and the judges agreed Thursday morning as they awarded him first in his class.

He stood in a holding pen as others continued to show their pigs so he could have his chance at grand champion, where his crossbred gilt, a young female pig, would go up against other first-place pigs.

“I do it for the experience,” he said.

Alena Luttrell, 9, of Cornell, rode with her family nearly an hour to get to the fair, where she was chosen Thursday evening to be an assistant in Magic Matt’s Family Fun Show.

“It felt great,” she said after the show of her experience in the show. “I don’t know how he did it.”

She said Magic Matt wasn’t giving up any of his magical secrets but she thinks she could pull off a few magic tricks of her own after assisting him.

Ashley Furniture pledges beds for displaced children

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A national furniture outlet is donating beds to help make tornado-displaced Coal City kids’ nights more comfortable.

Mitch Watson, a Coal City resident and sales associate at the Ashley Furniture store in Bolingbrook, said he contacted the company’s corporate office to ask if it could help after the June 22 tornado made the homes of potentially up to 200 families uninhabitable.

Ashley Furniture answered by dedicating at least 100 twinsize beds, risers and bedding sets to children in need.

“With the devastation that happened, I thought it was the right thing to do,” said Watson, whose house also was damaged by the tornado. “So many families were affected.

So it’s great the company can step up and help out.”

Pigs are scored on their market quality, which includes muscle, fat and body structure, along with qualities they must possess for their specific breed.

While some larger farm operations have many to choose from, others only raise a few for the sole purpose of showing them at the fair.

Molly Bernard of Newark has been showing pigs for eight years.

She has six pigs this year and she brought all of them to the 111th annual fair to see how they would do.

Bernard said it’s important to show animals at the fair to portray to the public what really goes on behind the scenes.

“These pigs are babied pretty darn much,” Bernard said.

“We get them in the spring and we have to practice with them until it’s time to show.”

She said with practice many of the pigs will listen and perform the way they need to in the ring; others have attitudes that don’t make the task easy.

Before the swine judging can begin, all the pigs must be weighed, and there is a strictly enforced weight limit.

They must weight between 170 and 285 pounds to be able to show.

Once the winners of each class are chosen, they will compete for individual breed champion and grand champion.

The individual breed champion barrow and gilt each receive $10 for each breed.

The grand champion barrow receives $50 and a trophy, the grand champion purebred and the grand champion crossbred breeding gilt receives $25 and a trophy.

The overall grand champion gilt receives $50 and a tray.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MEXICO CITY – Jacobo Zabludovsky, a journalist who for decades was seen as a symbol of the tight links between Mexico’s government and press, died Thursday at the age of 87.

Zabludovsky anchored Mexico’s most-viewed evening news program for almost three decades, until 1998, covering the nation’s tragedies but also reflecting a solidly pro-government political line while working for a the dominant Televisa network.

It all made him the face of the news, but also the face of a system that many considered repressive, but he later adopted a more independent stance in his second career as host of a radio news program.

“He will be more remembered for the stage when he

was a virtual spokesman for [governmental] power,” wrote Julio Hernandez Lopez, a columnist for the newspaper La Jornada.

The news manager for Zabludovsky’s radio program on Grupo Radio Centro, Arturo Corona, confirmed the death. Televisa said in a tweet he died of a stroke.

The rail-thin, e n e r g e t i c a n - Jacobo chor spent some Zabludovsky seven decades in broadcast and print journalism, interviewing figures such as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in his youth.

He perhaps was best known for his coverage of the country’s 1985 earthquake, which killed 9,500 people.

Equipped with an early ver-

sion of a mobile phone, Zabludovsky gave viewers a tour of the stunning damage in the city’s center.

But he was widely reviled, along with most of the rest of the country’s press, for downplaying the 1968 army massacre of students in Mexico City’s Tlatelolco square.

One of the darkest chapters of his professional history came in the 1988 presidential elections, which pitted leftist upstart Cuauhtemoc Cardenas against Carlos Salinas of the long-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, the PRI. Salinas eked out a narrow victory many claimed was the result of fraud.

Zabludovsky’s program, “24 Horas,” gave Salinas 141 minutes of total coverage over a 2 1⁄2-month period; the program gave Cardenas about nine minutes.

President Enrique Pena Nieto, who returned the PRI to power in the 2012 elections, wrote in a tweet: “I regret the death of the lawyer, chronicler and journalist, Jacobo Zabludovsky.”

In interviews in later years, Zabludovsky acknowledged the government had pressured journalists earlier in his career.

He revived his reputation among many with a brisk, folksy daily radio news broadcast in which he gave significant space to anti-government figures, and as a campaigner for cleaning up the historic center of Mexico City where he was born. Zabludovsky was to be buried at Mexico City’s Jewish cemetery.

He is survived by three children and his wife. His brother, noted architect Abraham Zabludovsky, died in 2003.

Sports writer Jack Disney dies at age 80 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ARCADIA, Calif. – Jack Disney, a longtime sports writer with the old Los Angeles Herald Examiner who later worked in publicity at two Southern California horse racing tracks, has died. He was 80.

Officials at Santa Anita Park said Wednesday that Disney died Monday at his home in Irvine after a long fight with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Disney started at the Herald Examiner at age 19 in 1954 and for the next 35 years he covered Southern California football and basketball, the Angels, Dodgers, Lakers, Raiders and boxing.

Tornado victims granted extension to file tax returns

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner announced Wednesday that residents affected by the June 22 tornado and severe weather that devastated parts of Grundy and Lee counties will now have until Dec. 31 to file tax returns that were due between June 22 and Dec. 31.

The extended deadline will provide relief for individuals and local businesses trying to file their returns or payments on time while recovering from the storms, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Stay safe this Fourth of July weekend The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our great country’s independence.

In Grundy County, across Illinois and the entire U.S., Americans will commemorate the anniversary of our independence with picnics, barbecues, ball games, swimming and, of course, fireworks.

Attending a community-sponsored display is the best – and the safest – way to enjoy fireworks.

They are put on by professionals, and area fire departments are on standby in case

there are any issues.

Of course, many residents will put on their own smaller fireworks displays, likely in your neighborhood.

Keep in mind that in Illinois, most fireworks – except for sparklers, snakes and other novelty items – are illegal.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of illegal commercial fireworks being set off around our area, things such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and other mini-explosives, or that local residents won’t be traveling to states where fireworks are legal.

Have a good time this Fourth of July, but be safe.

Here are some tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for individuals who plan to use fireworks this holiday season: • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign the fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.

• Always have an adult

supervise fireworks activities. Young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.

• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.

• Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

• After fireworks finish burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Pope Francis’ bully pulpit on climate Pope Francis, in his recent encyclical “Laudato Si,” aligned himself with the overwhelming scientific consensus on man-made climate change, affirming its reality and calling for immediate action to ease its effects.

His remarks underscore the need for world leaders to face up to this grave challenge and for all humans to be more responsible stewards of Earth.

In his strongly worded document, Pope Francis said the rich have polluted their way to prosperity at the expense of the poor.

Global warming, he noted, has been primarily driven by carbon emissions in high-income countries, while its consequences – extreme weather events, diminished food supplies and

political instability – will be felt most in poor countries.

Nations must develop a plan of action to address the problem, he said, and advance a “bold cultural revolution” to change how people interact with nature.

To Pope Francis, these ills are part of a “throwaway culture” that leaves people and the environment behind in the name of technological progress, unbridled consumerism and personal desires.

No one should expect Pope Francis, or any other individual, to have all the answers.

With this encyclical, he has brought greater attention to the danger that global warming poses to humanity and called on people to respect and sustain the planet they share.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

An early look at this fall’s football season VIEWS Rob Oesterle As hard as it is to believe, another school year is creeping up on us.

And, with the school year getting ready to emerge, you know what that means: Football.

The lllinois High School Association allows football teams across the state to begin their practices on Aug. 10, with the games starting on Aug. 28. That’s just more than a month before practice starts, and just shy of two months away for when the full pads are on and it’s time to see if the hard work put in since last year will bear fruit. The playoffs are to begin on the weekend of Oct. 30 to 31 and the state finals will be Nov. 27 to 28.

The IHSA has released the 2015 football schedules, so let’s take a look at what our four local teams – Morris, Minooka, Coal City and Seneca – will face this season.

The traditional season opener between Morris and Minooka is off the schedule, so the Redskins will open with a home game against Chicago Austin on Aug 28. The next two weeks put Morris on the road, visiting Washington on Sept. 4 and Dundee-Crown in Carpentersville on Sept. 11.

On Sept. 18, the Redskins return home to take on Sterling before traveling up Route 47 to visit Yorkville in the first of four straight Northern Illinois Big 12 East games.

You can bet the Morris players have those dates circled in red on their calendar, as Morris lost a one-point overtime decision to each of them last year.

After the game against Yorkville comes a two-week homestand, as DeKalb comes calling on Oct. 2 and Kaneland visits on Oct. 9. Morris ends the regular seasonwith two games on the road, traveling to Sycamore on Oct. 16 and ending the year at LaSalle-Peru on Oct. 23. Of the nine teams on Morris’ schedule,

Replacing Morris in Minooka’s season opener is a road game at Stagg on Aug. 28, with a home game against Lockport on Sept. 4. A home game against Romeoville on Sept. 11 starts the Southwest Prairie Conference schedule for the Indians, which lasts the rest of the year. On Sept. 18, Minooka visits Oswego before a Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) game at Plainfield Central on Sept. 26. A home game against Plainfield East is on Oct. 2 before the annual Battle of Ridge Road against Plainfield South takes place in Minooka on Oct. 9. The Indians travel to Oswego East on Oct. 16 before ending the regular season by hosting Plainfield North on Oct. 23.

Coal City, a Class 4A semifinalist last year, starts its season with a pair of neighboring rivals, hosting Reed-Custer to start the season on Aug.

A little trick for your topwater fishing I sat down for a little break the other day and picked up the latest issue of National Geographic. One of the feature articles talked about orcas. I flipped through the story and stopped on a spread explaining how the orcas feed.

They work together to ball up massive schools of herring.

Once the herring are gathered up, the orcas then push the ball toward the surface of the ocean.

They use the waters surface as a boundary. Escape is difficult.

Once in position, the orcas turn and smack the ball of herring with their tails. The resulting trauma to the herring either results in death or being stunned into motionless floating.

The orcas then turn and eat the helpless herring until full. While reading this I couldn’t help but laugh.

When I first cut my teeth on topwater fishing, I experienced something just like this. Only at the time, I didn’t know it until an older or more experienced angler explained to me what was happening.

The learning experience took place on Oneida Lake in central New York. Everyone I had talked to about the lake said it is one of the best in the country. In fact, the most recent issue of Bassmaster magazine lists this Empire State gem as No. 40 on their list of

100 best fishing locations.

Most of those who bragged about the lake talked specifically about the amazing topwater fishing. That’s all I needed to hear.

The first day I blasted about 12 miles across open water to a nice big flat covered in lush vegetation.

A couple of small streams poured into the area providing fresh water and some current. If hungry smallmouth existed, I was confident I would find them here.

In only a couple of casts my topwater lure exploded. I ripped back on a solid hookset only to swing and miss.

No fish. A few twitches later and the same thing. Over the next hour, I came up empty on countless strikes. Frustration set in and I couldn’t

Another angler shared this same flat with me. He parked his boat a good 50 yards from mine, but I could still tell he was enjoying a lot more catching then I was. After a while, he trolled up beside me. He noticed my escapades and offered a little advice.

He held up one rod with a soft jerkbait and his more traditional topwater lure on a second rod.

He proceeded to explain how Oneida Lake smallmouth tend to hit first and

then eat the baitfish as they fall, stunned, to the bottom.

He used a topwater to locate some hungry predators and then would follow up with a slower soft plastic that worked just below the surface. He taught me how he rarely needed to even twitch the follow-up bait. Once it started to sink, the fish would practically set the hook themselves.

That was the first time I had run across that particular situation. It was a great learning opportunity that has stuck with me to this day.

I am so thankful that local angler took the time to help me out. He didn’t have to. But he did.

I’ve fished numerous locations since that outing and employed the follow up

strategy on more than one occasion.

Summer is here.

Topwater fishing is a summer evening staple. If you run across this same situation, take a couple of minutes and rig a follow-up lure.

Any type of soft plastic that imitates the local baitfish will work.

Once you have quickly retrieved you surface lure, toss that other offering right to the same location.

Let it sink, like a stunned baitfish. Hang on, because I’m guessing a hungry monster just might be lurking out of sight.

At the bridge table, make each deal count by setting the specific goal of making or breaking the contract, then putting every effort into achieving that target. There is no need to work hard for an overtrick or an extra undertrick (unless you are playing in a pair event).

In yesterday’s deal, East had to find five defensive tricks. Today, South must come up with 10 offensive winners. How should he plan the play in four spades after West cashes his two top hearts, then shifts to the club king?

In the auction, note East’s twoheart advance. After an opening bid, a takeout double and a redouble (showing 10-plus points), East was marked with next to nothing. But he should pass only with no marked preference among the unbid suits. Here he much preferred hearts to diamonds and clubs, so bid that suit. North’s threespade rebid showed game-invitational values with exactly three-card spade support, which South should have passed out.

Can you see 10 tricks? They have to be five spades, four diamonds and one club. This might require taking three diamond finesses, and if so, speed is of the essence. At trick four, South must play a diamond to dummy’s 10. When it wins, he cashes the spade queen, leads a spade to his king, and repeats the diamond finesse.

Then he returns to the spade ace (drawing East’s last trump), takes a third diamond finesse, and claims.
