Coal City: Let there be light Village orders temporary lighting to replace streetlights out from tornado

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – At least 40 streetlights remain inoperable in Coal City because of tornado damage, and of those, eight or nine are the responsibility of the village while the rest are owned by ComEd. Village President Terry Halliday told the Finance Committee on Monday the lights were a major concern for residents in the affected areas, and they wanted it addressed for safety reasons.

“It came out at the town hall meeting that we need to make the lights a priority,” Halliday said.

According to Halliday, the police department would like to see eight temporary lights

“If we rent eight on a monthly basis for three months, that’s $13,000.”

Matt Fritz Coal City village administrator rented to light specific areas that were severely damaged by the EF3 tornado that struck June 22.

Coal City Sgt. Tom Logan said after the meeting the areas of concern are near Spring and Mazon roads, south on Broadway Street, in Richard’s Crossing and areas south of Coal City High School.

Village Administrator Matt Fritz said he priced the cost of renting light equipment for

the areas and it could cost $550 per light a month.

“If we rent eight on a monthly basis for three months, that’s $13,000,” Fritz said at the regular village board meeting held later Monday.

Halliday said he felt the board agrees the lighting is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed.

“There are things we need to be doing,” Halliday said.

“So we need to do them.”

He said perhaps if the areas are better lit, the cost will be offset by being able to back off on police staffing required to do extra patrols of those ares as they have been doing since the tornado.

Trustee Neal Nelson asked Fritz to contact the insurance company to see if the village can be reimbursed for the cost of lighting those areas.

Fritz said Tuesday the lights have been ordered.

Minooka resident named 2015 Little Miss You Can Do It, overcoming paralysis More online

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Dani Smith, 8, of Minooka will be doing something for the first time this school year: she will walk the hallways of her school on her own, without the aid of her canes, for three classes.

Dani was born with Myelomeningocele, a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. The condition is a type of spina bifida.

After birth, surgery to repair the defect is usually recommended at an early age, for Dani it meant she would be left partially paralyzed.

“Dani has had four stem cell transplants and five intense physical therapy sessions,” her mother Cindy Smith said.

“She is now walking independently around the house.”

Before October 2010, when the Smith family traveled to Mexico to receive stem cells from her own cord blood that was saved at birth, Dani walked with the aid of a walker.

By November she was already getting sensation in her legs and feet that were previously not there according to her mother.

“We’ve set no boundaries for her,” Smith said. “We tell her she has to try everything, and if she can’t do it, that’s okay.”

Between 2010 and 2013 Dani had three more stem cell transplants, which has resulted in her being able to walk independently for periods of time at home and in therapy.

Before the stem cell transplants, Smith said her daughter couldn’t feel the whole lower part of her back. That’s where the scar is from the surgery that Dani had when she was little to close in her spine.

Morris children’s Grundy bridge work on track librarian terminated

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – After working 37 years with the Morris Area Public Library, Children’s Librarian Carol Hutchings was removed Monday afternoon by Director Lorene Kennard.

Kennard said she could not comment on the reason for the termination or make any comments about the matter, as it Carol involves person- Hutchings nel. The director said she already has posted the vacancy on the Reaching Across Illinois Library System jobs board. The decision was not the result of any cost-savings measure by the library, Kennard said, and the position will remain a full-time job.

Hutchings said she was not

able to comment on the matter at this time.

Library board Trustee Barb Boma said she and her fellow trustees received emails Monday regarding Hutchings’ termination and that she was uncomfortable discussing any of the particulars at this time.

Trustee Doug Pryor also declined to comment, but said he understood that board President Steven Larson had been consulted by Kennard regarding the dismissal.

“Hiring and terminations are the purview of the director,” Pryor added.

Kennard was hired by the library board in June 2014 to replace Kyla Waltermire, who resigned in August 2013.

Larson did not immediately return messages left Tuesday.

Pryor said the matter could come up in a closed session at the next library board meeting, which is at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10.

MORRIS – What has been reported as the wettest June in Illinois history has caused only minor delays to Grundy County road construction projects.

Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem said the county is constructing more bridges than in a typical year, but there hasn’t been a huge impact on the projects from weather or other factors.

A Dwight Road bridge rebuild over Waupecan Creek was delayed three weeks because heavy rains washed away some elements of the construction, but the project is back in full swing and should be completed soon, Cassem said.

The $500,000 project includes a wider approach to the bridge and is designed to eliminate some flooding issues in the spring. Cassem said nearly 200 vehicles

Pilings made of wood that hold up the two-span bridge over Waupecan Creek showed signs of deterioration in March that moved the bridge to the front of the list for replacement this year. Despite heavy rains, Grundy County’s multiple bridge projects have only had slight delays. utilize that road each day, including grain trucks and tractor equipment as farmers move from field to field.

Delays weren’t significant in the rebuild of a North Prairie Drive bridge in Goose Lake Township, Cassem said.

The bridge has been closed since last year and should be completed soon.

Grundy reps to attend West Nile found in Ottawa mosquitoes drug abuse training MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Paula Goodwin from the No Tolerance Task Force and Anita Young from Chestnut Health Services in Joliet will join more than 1,500 substance abuse prevention specialists from across the country from Sunday to Aug. 6 at Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s 2015 Mid-Year Training Institute in Indianapolis. CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute offers more than 70 half-day and two-day courses geared toward helping participants find solutions to substance abuse problems, according to a news release from the Grundy County NTTF. Attendees participate in a variety of lecture and handson sessions to expand their knowledge in prevention science and improve their skills in implementing strategies to reduce drug and alcohol use.

This year’s training will feature keynote remarks by Michael Botticelli, director of the office of national drug control policy; Kana Enomoto, deputy principal administrator for the substance abuse and mental health services administration; and Karla Sneegas, branch chief for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s office of smoking and health.

CADCA’s training will cover a range of topics, including how to prevent prescription drug abuse and reduce heroin use to how to create tobacco-free environments, reduce impaired driving and develop policies to reduce marijuana use and underage drinking.

The coalition is working on educating the community, especially parents, guardians, families, schools and law enforcement about the increase of heroin addictions, prescription drug abuse, e-cigarettes.

OTTAWA – The LaSalle County Health Department has reported that mosquitoes collected in Ottawa last week tested positive for West Nile Virus.

This is the first documented WNV activity in LaSalle County this year, according to a news release from the LaSalle County Health Department.

In Grundy County, no mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus so far, Grundy County Health Department Administrator Phil Jass said Tuesday.

WNV is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird, according to the news release.

Common WNV symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

However, four out of five people infected with WNV will not show any symptoms, according to the news release.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death can occur. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from WNV. The best way to prevent the disease or any other mosquito-borne illness is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to take personal percautions to avoid mosquito bites. Precautions include practicing the three “Rs” – reduce, repel and report.

“You could see through it,” Cassem said. “It could get bigger, so we thought it best to close it.”

The Spring Road Bridge project will cost about $900,000.

The county typically does work on bridges in the $300,000 range, Cassem said.

About 80 percent of the cost is covered by federal funds the county and township applied for.

The state will pay for about $100,000 of the cost with its township bridge state program fund.

The rest of the cost is split between Maine Township and Grundy County.

“We’re just waiting on the signed agreement from the state,” Cassem said.

Cassem said the county is

hoping to get environmental assessment approval in the next few weeks to construct a new bridge bringing O’Malley Road over Hog Run near Seneca, and Nettle School Road over O’Brien Run in Morris.

If they are not approved soon, the projects have to be pushed back to next year, he said.

Work is set to begin Aug. 6 on Ridge Road in Minooka.

Cassem said a two-step process of sealing and then adding a microsurface made of asphalt, small stone and cement will bring more life to the road going forward.

“I have faith it [the state budget] will be fixed before we get to the point of sweating,” he said.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office announced this week the state does not have the authority to distribute video gambling money without a budget in place.

It was not clear why the state budget impasse affects video gambling money, and the state comptroller’s office is looking into the matter.

Kopczick said he had not heard of any similar hold-ups in sales taxes or other revenues distributed through state government.

Without a state budget in place, Illinois isn’t able to pay many of its new bills. However, some exceptions remain.

Rauner’s office indicates his belief that video gambling payments won’t be among those exceptions. In the statement, the governor’s camp placed the blame for the state’s inability to pass a balanced

But Madigan believes Rauner caused the budget holdup and argues the governor could’ve avoided a partial state shutdown by making changes to the budget that Democratic lawmakers sent to him in May and leaving the rest alone.

“The person who had the singular authority to avoid all this was Gov. Rauner,” Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk is not shrugging off the roughly $40,000 a month in video gambling taxes that the city won’t get until the state approves a budget.

“Obviously, it’s income,” O’Dekirk said, and city officials are rimming the budget.

“Forty thousand a month is significant because we’re look-

ing at even smaller amounts.”

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said while he’s not worried about the $3,823 the village would lose, he did have harsh words for state government, which is now in its fourth week of a new fiscal year without a budget.

“I’m not surprised. This is typical for Illinois,” Baldermann said. “Local government is constantly under attack by the state, which is a shame.

We’re running things efficiently.”

He pointed to Rauner’s earlier budget proposal that would cut municipalities’ share of the state income tax in half as an example of the state relying on local governments to pick up the pieces.

Minooka Village President Pat Brennan said he’s not too concerned about the $3,890 the village stands to lose. He’s more worried about the state budget crisis and what that means moving forward.

“We’re still wondering about all the rest. The gambling, I’m not so worried about. But everything counts when you’re pinching pennies,” Brennan said.

Stallion leaves for another school; board to decide on 1-year replacement

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – N.B. Galloway Elementary School Principal Angela Stallion has resigned to accept a principal position at a Hinsdale elementary school.

Stallion had worked for the Channahon district for nine years, at one point as principal of both Galloway and Pioneer Path schools. The Channahon School District 17 school board accepted her resignation Monday.

“She brought a lot to us, especially with curriculum and data,” School Board President Joe Pope said. “Our teachers were really distraught at the news. She meant a lot to us and was definitely an asset.”

“We know we’re losing a good principal,” Superintendent Nick Henkle said.

Stallion is serving as principal at The Lane School, a Hinsdale kindergarten through fifth grade school.

She already started her new position and said she is enjoying Lane and at the same time missing Channahon.

“It was a really hard decision for me,” she said. “I will miss Channahon terribly – the people, the teachers and most of all the students. I have so much love and respect for that

community. It is a really special community.”

Stallion said she made the decision to accept the new job because of upcoming changes in her family, most importantly the transition of her oldest daughter from school to a center for adults with disabilities.

She said her family will continue to live in Channahon for at least a year while her son begins his senior year at Minooka Community High School.

With the beginning of school quickly approaching, the school board began its search for a new Galloway principal. Pope told the board Monday the district already has received 26 applications for the spot, which is being advertised as a one-year position, and should have a final candidate by Aug. 1.

The school board is in discussions as whether to close one of the district’s schools to compensate for decreasing student enrollment. The choice could be to close Pioneer Path, led by Principal Laura DuBois, and then send most of its students to Galloway.

If Pioneer Path is closed, it’s possible DuBois would be made principal of Galloway, or the newly appointed Galloway principal would continue in that position. With the issue of school closure undecided,

She said she loves pageants because she can wear pretty clothes and meet new friends while seeing old ones.

programs during August for individuals with diabetes and their families On Aug. 11, Morris Hospital dietitian Kara Corsiglia will present “My Plate” from 6 to 7 p.m. in Whitman Assembly Room 1 at Morris Hospital. “My Plate” is a way to learn to put together a healthy food plate using foods that are nutritious and in the right proportion.

On Aug. 13, Morris Hospital dietitian Liz Baker will offer a carbohydrate counting class for diabetes management from 5 to 6 p.m. in Whitman Assembly Room 1.

This class will explore how healthy eating and carbohydrate counting can improve blood sugar.

Both programs are free.

FAMILY TABLE Breakfast for dinner, with a bit of pasta

This is the ultimate breakfast-for-dinner dish: bacon, eggs and toast (in the form of buttery crumbs), combined with spaghetti.

Most of us fry our bacon in a skillet, but I prefer to lay it out on a rack set into a rimmed and parchment- or foil-lined baking sheet and bake it in the oven. That way the bacon cooks more evenly.

First, the pasta is toasted in oil in the skillet. Then the liquid is added and the pasta is simmered until it is al dente. Why bother with this method? Because the pasta picks up more flavor this way.

You add the eggs when the pasta is just about finished.

They need to be cooked over medium-low heat, stirred constantly, and pulled off the heat the minute they’re done so they don’t overcook and get tough. The breadcrumbs are the finishing touch; half are mixed into the pasta and eggs, half are sprinkled on top.

BREAKFAST-FOR-DINNER SPAGHETTI Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (40 minutes active) Servings: 6

8 ounces bacon 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 2 cups fresh breadcrumbs (made by pulsing homemade-style white bread in a food processor; you will need about 4 slices) Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 cups thinly sliced yellow onion 2 teaspoons minced garlic 12 ounces spaghetti, broken in half 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1½ cups water 6 large eggs, lightly beaten with a tablespoon of water and a pinch of salt Heat the oven to 375 F.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with kitchen parchment or foil, then set a wire rack over it.

Arrange the bacon in a single layer on the rack and bake on the oven’s middle shelf until crispy, about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the bacon from the oven and set aside to cool.

Crumble the bacon.

While the bacon is cooking, in a large nonstick or stick-resistant skillet, heat 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium. Add the breadcrumbs

and cook, stirring constantly, until they are golden and crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl and toss with a hefty pinch each of salt and pepper. Set aside.

Wipe out the skillet and set over medium, then add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and the onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 10 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. Add the pasta to the

skillet and toast over medium heat, stirring often, until light golden, 6 to 8 minutes.

Add the stock, water and ½ teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil and cook at a vigorous simmer, stirring often, until the pasta is tender, about 10 minutes (the liquid will reduce by about two-thirds).

Make a well in the center of the skillet, add the eggs and cook over medium-low, stirring constantly, until the eggs are just scrambled.

Remove from the heat, return the onions and half of the breadcrumbs to the skillet and toss well. Season with salt and pepper, then divide among 6 serving plates.

Top each portion with some of the remaining crumbs and the bacon.

Serve immediately.

Seneca’s Pihl making waves at DePaul

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com SENECA – After having a successful freshman season for DePaul University a year ago, former Seneca softball standout Nicole Pihl wanted to do even better.

Pihl recently finished her sophomore season for the Blue Demons with a .293 batting average.

Among her 34 hits were six doubles, one triple and 11 home runs, a total that was second on the team and was critical to the club setting a new school record for home runs in a season.

She also had 34 RBIs and had a .647 slugging percentage, both of which were second highest on the team.

After spending most of her freshman season as a designated hitter, Pihl earned the starting job at first base this season.

In 323 chances, which included a team-leading 311 putouts, she made only one error for a .997 fielding percentage.

She did not make an error during Big East Conference games.

Pihl got off to a hot start, as she was named Big East Player of the Week on Feb. 23.

In four games at the University of Texas Arlington Invitational, Pihl hit .583 with seven hits and 10 RBI. She also recorded 21 putouts in the twoday tournament.

Pihl found a power surge in Texas by making team-best three times. No hit was bigger that weekend than the grand slam Pihl smacked to power DePaul to a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over host UT Arlington.

She had a career-high five RBIs. Pihl’s other two long balls in that tournament came in wins against Missouri-Kansas City and Prairie View A&M. As exciting as that was for her, what stood out for her from the season was a trip the Blue Demons took to Hawaii.

“The trip that stands out the most for me is the trip to Hawaii that we took,” she said.

STAFF REPORTS With so many 7-on-7 football competitions this summer, most of the focus has been on skill positions.

Irish will hold its travel softball tryouts at 10 a.m. Aug. 9 for 12U and 14U, and at noon for 16U/18U at the Seneca High School softball complex.

Hawks’ Kruger holding out, seeking a long-term contract

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com As is everyone else, Marcus Kruger is waiting to see how Stan Bowman is going to make this all work.

Kruger, a restricted free agent, did not receive any offer sheets and did not file for arbitration, so he’s almost certain to return to the Blackhawks in the fall. But he has yet to re-sign, because the Hawks have yet to resolve their salary-cap situation.

With 21 players on the roster and a $750,000 bonus overage carried over from last season, the Hawks are right at the $71.4-million salary cap.

In order to sign Kruger, who likely will command about $2 million to $2.5 million per season, Bowman must shed more salary. The Hawks have tried

to move Bryan Bickell ($4 million salary) and Kris Versteeg ($2.2 million), according to sources, but haven’t found any takers.

Kruger’s camp is holding out hope for a long-term contract, but might have no choice but to settle on a shortterm deal if it takes the Hawks all the way until October to get cap-compliant, as it did last season.

“Our preference is longer-term negotiation,” Kruger’s agent, J.P. Barry, said in an email. “There may be some scenarios where we could discuss a shorter term, but that would depend on the situation. We will stay patient and let the team sort through its cap issues.”

Kruger, 25, had seven goals and 10 assists in 81 games last season, and has proven

invaluable as a penalty-killer and shutdown center on the fourth line. Bowman said July 17 that he’d like to have Kruger signed before camp opens Sept. 18, and Kruger has made it clear he wants to stay. But for now, all he can do is wait.

“We have had regular contact with Chicago and we know they would like to pro-

ceed, but can’t at this juncture,” Barry said. “Hopefully, something changes that soon.”

Junior achievement: Chicago was named one of five finalists to host the World Junior Championship, one of the biggest hockey tournaments in the world, in 2018. USA Hockey will choose between

Chicago, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Tampa to host the tournament, which is contested in late December and early January, and features 10 countries and the best players in the world younger than age 20.

USA Hockey expects to narrow down the field over the next two months.

OPINION Illinois’ manufacturing base continues declining SPRINGFIELD – When I first began covering Illinois state government, a Mitsubishi sports car could be seen sitting in the governor’s parking spot at the Capitol.

The year was 1988, and the governor was James R. Thompson. Thompson drove the sports car as a point of state pride; it was made in Illinois in the then-new auto plant in Normal – a plant that Thompson helped land for Illinois. Well, that mark of state manufacturing prowess is disappearing. Mitsubishi announced last week that it is closing the plant.

Some of the factories, like the Mitsubishi plant, closed because their wares couldn’t grab a sufficient market share. But others plants are leaving because of the state’s oppressive business climate.

For example, South Holland-based T&B Tube announced this year it will invest $5.6 million to build a new plant in Gary, Indiana.

Jack Jones, president of T&B Tube, has publicly cited Illinois’ high worker’s compensation rates as a reason for making the move to Indiana.

U.S. Steel Corp. also announced this year that it would be halting operations in Granite City, giving pink slips to 2,080 workers. But the company has maintained operations in Michigan, Indiana, Alabama and Pennsylvania.

Romeoville-based American Stair Corp. Inc., a manufacturer of steel stairs and railings, also announced this year that it will move to a new plant in Hammond, Indiana, by the end of the year. During the last two decades, Illinois has seen many factories close and jobs disappear. We are hemorrhaging jobs to places like Indiana, Texas and Tennessee.

That’s 311,000 places on assembly lines that have vanished. Some of those jobs have been lost to international competition and greater automation. But many jobs have simply migrated to other states. Illinois has a lousy business climate.

“There really isn’t anything that we haven’t talked about over and over,” said Kim Clarke Maisch, president of the Illinois chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

“What I hear from my members is that the cost of worker’s compensation is just way too high in Illinois. Sure there were some reforms in 2011 but the state is nowhere near where it needs to be to be competitive,” she said.

Just consider: The workers compensation insurance premium in Illinois is 12.9 percent of payroll for carmakers.

That’s compared to 3.9 percent in Indiana and 3 percent in Michigan.

Is it any wonder automakers would think twice about doing business here? Illinois’ right-to-work status also plays against its ability to attract and retain industry. Like it or not, manufacturers often prefer to do business in rightto-work states.

Twenty-five states, Illinois among them, allow for such compulsory worker payments to unions and 25 don’t.

Understanding the impact of the ADA Imagine not being able to ride a city bus because you use a wheelchair. Imagine being deaf, going to the doctor, and not being unable to understand what he said.

Imagine having a visual impairment and not being able to access information on your computer. Imagine having all of the necessary qualifications for a job and being denied that job because you have a disability.

Although it might be difficult to fathom these situations today, these practices were common before July 26, 1990. That is the date that the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush.

For centuries, people with disabilities experienced segregation. Many people with disabilities were placed in horrid institutions. Children with disabilities were not allowed to attend school.

People who used assistive walking devices were often unable to enter restaurants, theaters, and countless other public places. It was legal to ask a job applicant if he or she had a disability. When the answer was “yes”, that person was usually denied

the job, even if he or she was the best qualified. Thus, our nation lost the talents of many people with disabilities due to this unfair practice.

In the 1970s, people with disabilities began raising their voices to say that this kind of blatant discrimination was simply wrong. Centers for Independent Living were created during that time. These organizations were, and remain, governed and staffed by people with various disabilities. As the disability rights movement grew, Centers for Independent Living were often the focal points for people with disabilities in the communities in which they were located. People associated with Centers for Independent Living joined with other disability rights advocates and worked tirelessly to make sure that a federal civil rights bill for people with disabilities was passed.

Because of the ADA, progress to support people with disabilities continues to be made at all institutions across the nation. At Joliet Junior College, building renovations and construction is completed with the idea of

accessibility for all. Instructors and professors are able to access information on how best to support students in the classroom who need special accommodations.

In light of the 25th anniversary of the ADA, we encourage individuals to become more aware of their rights afforded by this law.

Take ibuprofen, baby aspirin at different times Dear Dr. K: I take ibuprofen every morning for my arthritis. My doctor wants me to take low-dose aspirin every day to reduce my heart attack risk.

Ibuprofen and aspirin are both NSAIDs, right? So will the ibuprofen help my arthritis and my heart? Or should I take both?

Dear Reader: When joints ache, many people turn to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief.

Aspirin is a type of NSAID. So are ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn). NSAIDs are widely used because they perform double duty. They relieve pain and also reduce inflammation.

But aspirin and other NSAIDs are not equal when it comes to heart disease risk.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Daily, low-dose (“baby”) aspirin reduces the risk of further heart trouble in people with known heart disease, and in people at high risk for developing heart disease.

In contrast, other NSAID drugs somewhat increase heart disease risk. Doctors first recognized this risk when a new type of NSAID drug, called COX-2 drugs, came on the market. One of them was called Vioxx. Vioxx and one other COX-2 drug were taken off the market because people who used them had a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart

trouble.

Subsequently, research revealed that several of the older types of NSAIDs (perhaps not including naproxen) slightly increased heart risks.

In my opinion, this is so slight that most people don’t need to worry.

Why do some NSAIDs pose a risk to the cardiovascular system? First, they reduce the ability of aspirin to inhibit blood clots.

A blood clot can block a narrowed artery in the heart, triggering a heart attack.

Second, they cause the kidneys to retain more salt and water.

That triggers blood pressure to rise, boosting the risk of a stroke.

High blood pressure also makes people more prone to

atrial fibrillation – a rapid, quivering motion of the heart’s upper chambers that also increases stroke risk. Finally, they probably increase the tendency of the arteries that feed the heart to narrow.

Aspirin helps prevent heart attack and stroke by making the blood less likely to clot.

Aspirin attaches to blood cells called platelets to make them less sticky. This decreases the risk of blood clots forming in heart arteries. Aspirin also decreases the tendency of the arteries that feed the heart to narrow.

You take both ibuprofen and aspirin. You need to know that taking ibuprofen can reduce the heart-protective effect of aspirin. The reason is that ibuprofen latches on

to platelets in the blood at the same spots where aspirin attaches to platelets, thereby decreasing the anti-clotting effects of aspirin.

If you need to take both, take the baby aspirin first, in the morning with breakfast.

Then wait at least an hour (preferably two) before taking ibuprofen. You can also try to use non-drug therapies to treat your arthritis pain.

Heating pads, ice or physical therapy, if appropriate, may help. Even if these approaches don’t eliminate your pain, they may let you take a lower dose of ibuprofen.
