Coal City holds public hearing Hearing concerns issuance of $7.5 million in bonds for repairs

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Village of Coal City finance committee discussed Monday night some of the amounts the municipality is looking to fund regarding infrastructure repairs because of the EF3 tornado that hit the area June 22.

To prepare for some of the needed expenditures the village held a public hearing before its regular board meeting Monday night.

“The quickest we can issue bonds would be Aug. 24 by holding the public meeting

tonight,” Village Administrator Matt Fritz said during the finance committee. “We’re not saying we have to issue them now. You need more information and numbers but this is the start of the conversation.”

The hearing was about a plan to issue up to $7.5 million in general obligation bonds.

Fritz said the Monday night hearing would give the public a chance to talk, and for the board to listen, to any issues they may have.

There was no public comment during the hearing.

“The proceeds of the bonds will be used to finance the costs

of the acquisition, construction, rehabilitation and equipping of certain infrastructure within the municipality and matters related thereto and including, but not limited to, certain working capital costs and costs related to the immediate response for public health and safety related to the aftermath of the tornadoes which affected the Village on June 22,” Mayor Terry Halliday read to the board and public.

The finance committee heard some initial estimated costs for infrastructure repair, including to roads and lighting.

Depending how many of the roads the village patches versus rebuilds, the project could cost the village anywhere from $3.5 million for minimum

patching and overlay costs to the most-needed roads, to $17.5 million for complete resurfacing and reconstruction of all roads including Broadway Street from Spring Road north to the treatment plant.

The village has not yet heard from its insurance provider to see what will be covered and what won’t.

Officials used the amount of just more than $9 million, which would include everything but Broadway Street repairs, for their report to Illinois Emergency Management Agency that seeks help from the state.

Fritz said the Broadway Street repair could not be added to the IEMA report because Broadway Street would be under federal guidelines.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The first day of class for the 2015-16 year at Morris Community High School is three weeks away, and teachers are readying their classrooms and lesson plans.

Dave Auwerda, chairman of the MCHS social studies department and instructional technology leader, said the department met in June and set a goal of maintaining test continuity to ensure students are given the best chance to be successful.

The department compared test data from different classes and plans to implement its most effective strategies throughout the department in an effort to get students to score better on tests. With that in mind, Auwerda said faculty is working to improve the freshman transition process. One goal set in hopes of smoothing the process is to better integrate reading and writing across the curriculum.

“Education is constantly evolving,” Auwerda said. “We want to prove what we’re doing is working.”

Supplying the community Back to School Expo to benefit Coal City families affected by June tornado

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Back to School Expo in Coal City is seeing a slight shift in focus for this year.

In light of the June 22 tornado that damaged 884 properties, Help for Hope, at 1630 S. Broadway St., Coal City, is hosting the event with the same structure as previous years but is encouraging families affected by the tornado to attend.

The expo is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and is sponsored by the Coal City Teachers’ Association, Coal City Food Pantry and Church of Christ Cherry Hill Disaster Relief.

It will provide free school

supplies, a mobile food pantry and a Help for Hope open house. Families in need, tornado victims and community members in general are encouraged to attend.

“We’ve invited a lot of local organizations that have been helping to come out and provide information to people,” Help for Hope director Cathy Milne said.

Church of Christ Cherry Hill, of New Lenox, reached out to Milne to help provide furniture and appliances to those who met the criteria.

Milne is waiting for the items to be picked up. Milne said the church’s headquarters in Tennessee reaches out to disaster areas and assess what service it can provide. “It was awesome,” she said.

Although there are services provided for families affected by the tornado, Milne said Help for Hope will still focus on many of the same people it has helped in recent years.

She said the organization strives to help those who struggle to make ends meet each year.

Help for Hope is a 24-7 help agency, Milne said. It provides necessities like cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products on a regular basis.

The office hours are 10 a.m. to noon Mondays and 4 to 6 p.m.

Tuesdays, but Milne wants people to know Help for Hope responds to those in emergency at all times of the day.

“Being voluntary will create a consumer choice,” Grundy County Farm Bureau Manager Tasha Bunting said.

“Consumers can purchase what they are comfortable with for their family.”

She said the labeling will give farmers a chance to go into another niche market, like organic farmers have done with the organic label.

The Illinois Farm Bureau is pleased with the passage of the act, according to a news release.

“The bill will help to bring greater clarity to food labeling for American consumers by removing the current patchwork system of wide-ranging and diverse state labels on foods,” IFB President Richard Guebert said in the news release.

He said in addition to the bill stopping states and local governments from imposing mandatory labels on food products that contain GMOs, it also defines the term “natural” in food labeling.

The bill is not law yet, as the U.S. Senate has not approved it yet. It was received in the Senate and read twice

before being referred Friday to the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. The bill also needs the president’s signature.

If the act becomes law, it will set up a USDA certification process and label for companies that wish to voluntarily label their products.

“We urge the Senate to follow the House’s lead and pass similar legislation which creates national labeling standards,” Guebert said.

The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association said in a news release that the legislation will establish a uniform, science-based labeling framework for foods made with genetically modified organisms while preventing the costly effects of a patchwork of state GMO labeling mandates.

“We believe that any labeling requirements should come from the FDA so that every company is operating under the same guidelines,” Mark Denzler, vice president and chief operating officer of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, said in the news release.

“Without a federal standard, states will be allowed to pursue their own state-bystate rules related to labeling requirements creating a huge burden for Illinois food manufacturers that sell products both in-state and out-of-state.

These production modification costs will trickle down to our grocery stores and ultimately the consumer.”

As the school moves toward a paperless classroom, Auwerda is one of the leaders in implementing various Google platforms at school in regards to how work is completed.

Some students come into Morris High School from a feeder school with a one-to-one technology ratio, he said, which means each student has access to a technology device for the purpose of doing schoolwork.

Others don’t have the same experience.

“We want to keep the classroom current,” Auwerda said.

Another teacher aiming to keep his classroom current is industrial tech teacher Mark Smith. With the help of several students, Smith installed a new spray room within his shop to apply paint, adhesives and stains to various projects.

“The old one was not designed to handle a modern learning environment,” Smith said.

In 2012, Smith started networking and gaining industry supporters. Since then, nearly $340,000 worth of supplies, services or monetary donations have been made to his program. This allowed for the shop’s new spray room and additional CNC router that will give the program a better foundation for its work.

The shop will continue to produce acoustic guitars, longboards and entertainment centers. In the future, Smith hopes to have students complete kitchen cabinets.

On the more musical side of things, Morris’ band director, Jeff Muraida, said he’s looking to switch up the sound of the band this school year.

“I’m all about that bass,” Muraida said.

He plans to incorporate more depth of sound, as well as use musical compositions that use more bass. He also wants to add more structure to rehearsals, by making sure each minute of time is used productively. Band camp is taking place the next two weeks, and Muraida hopes to continue strong performances at band competitions. The school has three scheduled for the fall.

True-crime author Ann Rule dies at 83

By DONNA GORDON BLANKINSHIP The Associated Press SEATTLE – True-crime writer Ann Rule, who wrote more than 30 books, including a profile of her former co-worker, serial killer Ted Bundy, has died at age 83.

Rule died at Highline Medical Center at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Scott Thompson, a spokesman for CHI Franciscan Health.

Rule’s daughter, Leslie Rule, said on Facebook that her mother had many health issues, including congestive heart failure.

“My mom died peacefully last night,” Leslie Rule wrote.

“She got to see all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

James White, screenwriter of ‘Ray’ movie, dies at age 67 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SANTA MONICA, California – James L. White, who wrote the screenplay for “Ray,” the 2004 movie about singer Ray Charles, has died in California. He was 67.

His attorney, Matthew Saver, said in a statement that White died Thursday from cancer at his home in Santa Monica.

“Ray” received a best-picture Oscar nomination. It was White’s only feature credit, although he worked on unproduced screenplays.

White told the Los Angeles Times he and Ray Charles bonded while he was working on the screenplay after the singer learned that they both had grown up in the rural, segregated South.

Both at one time also had been heroin addicts.

White is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and three children.

There will be no funeral services at White’s request.

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 251 families from its food pantry, according to a news release from the organization.

Channahon Mustang prepares next giant leap

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – The 10year old Channahon all-star baseball team already has had a measure of success that many teams have not.

Last year, as 9-year-olds, the members of the team reached the PONY Baseball World Series, played in Walnut, California.

This year’s World Series will be played in Youngsville, Louisiana, and the Channahon team took its first step in that direction over the weekend by winning the Channahon Region Tournament.

That allows it to play this week in the Zone Tournament in Lafayette, Indiana. They begin play at noon Thursday against WEA of Indiana. Other teams in the tournament include Herscher, Lafayette, Indiana; Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Tri-Valley, Michigan; and Grand Ledge, Michigan.

Channahon dominated the tournament on their home field, beating Dubuque, Iowa, 16-2, upending Berwyn, 142, and then beating Berwyn again for the title, 7-3. That’s a combined score of 37-7 in three games, and Channahon showed some resilience by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to Berwyn in the title game.

“We have a good, solid, allaround team,” said Channahon coach Fernando Rizo, who is assisted by Gabe Andreano and Michael Roberson II. “We have had a pretty good summer so far.”

As a part-time travel team that has played around 30 games together, the Channahon team has won the championship at the Channahon Fireworks Tournament, finished second at Whiteford and reached the semifinals in a tournament in Naperville.

“That Naperville tournament was all full-time travel teams,” Rizo said. “We just decided to enter it to see how we could do against that type of competition. For us to reach the semifinals as a part-time travel team is pretty good.”

Channahon, it’s hard to pick one or two star players.

“We are good up and down the lineup,” Rizo said. “We rotate the kids as far as starting games. Everyone is pretty equal, so we don’t really miss out on anything if someone is not in the game.

“The kids can play different positions on the field and a lot

of them pitch, too. We have a lot of depth everywhere and no one on our team is an easy out at the plate. We play with leadoffs all year, so these kids love to run the bases and get dirty.”

After the long trip to California last summer, the team is ready to load up the cars again and get on the road.

“The kids are real excited

about going to Lafayette this weekend,” Rizo said. “And, if we win that, we go to Youngsville, Louisiana. That will be another long drive, but we had a lot of fun on our trip to California last year. That’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The Channahon Mustang team now hopes to make it twice in a lifetime.

STAFF REPORTS As the laps ticked down in Friday’s late-model feature at Grundy County Speedway, the first warning from his spotter and father Joe Einhaus Jr. was scary enough for David Einhaus.

Dad made it simple for him: “Eddie’s coming.” As in Eddie Hoffman.

More warnings followed.

In the end, David Einhaus pulled through inn cool, but dramatic fashion.

A fraction of a second, 0.273, was the difference, as Einhaus scored his first career feature victory.

The Seneca native took the lead with a smooth move underneath Chris Cooling on lap 9. For most of the race, he enjoyed a comfortable lead.

But things got interesting after Hoffman cleared Cooling to take over second place with

just 11 laps remaining.

Hoffman made up a lot of ground in a hurry. But there were only two laps left when Hoffman pulled up on Einhaus’s bumper.

He could have forced the issue and caused havoc down low. But Hoffman took the high road – and the high side.

Cooling held on for third and fast qualifier Tony Scalpelli Jr. was fourth, ahead of Pat Kelly and Larry Schuler.

The special 40-lap street stock feature was a runaway for Jake Bradley, who claimed his fourth victory of the season by a 12.057 seconds over Seth Blommaert.

Cheryl Hryn and Christy Penrod, who were 1-2 in qualifying, ran together the whole race and finished third and fourth. Fifth went to Rita Fields, ahead of John Ventrello III. Tom Knippenberg made

a lap 21 pass of Joe Vinachi stand up to win his fourth Mid-American feature of the season and his fourth in a row. The difference between them at the finish was 1.102 seconds.

Third went to John Ventrello, while Luke Baldwin, Chuck Yuris and Matt Clemens completed the top six.

Michael Tobuch won his second 4-cylinder feature of the season.

Tobuch started outside second row and passed Danielle Dobczyk for the lead on lap 3.

He beat Mike Yuris at the finish by 0.492 seconds.

Dobczyk was third, ahead of Will Shepherd, Chris Mihalski and Alex Gay.

You want to add a great pitcher to help in the playoff push, but you don’t want to feel too much pain.

Basically, you’d like to fool the Philadelphia Phillies into taking Castro in exchange for Hamels, who is under contract through 2018.

Unless the Phillies don’t have a scouting department or cable TV, that’s unlikely to happen.

VIEWS Rick Morrissey All-Star seasons, Starlin, and we once did have high hopes for you, Javy – but the truth is that many of them have moved on emotionally from these two infielders. Theo Epstein’s much-admired master plan has room for trading big-time prospects. It’s what The Plan (that’s trademarked, right?) was built for.

Play poorly for several seasons, stockpile high draft picks and build up “assets’’ you can use to acquire other players.

The question, of course, is when to activate that part of the strategy. Let me play devil’s advocate for a second.

What have you seen from Russell this season that makes

you believe he’ll be a star?

Don’t tell me how high he was drafted or where Baseball America ranks him or what his minor-league stats were.

Don’t bow down at the altars of Theo and Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, who drafted Russell.

What stands out about the kid? He’s a good fielder, certainly much more reliable than Castro is. But the hitting? We can’t know.

His .232 average doesn’t tell us a whole lot, other than he’s a rookie and baseball is hard.

Trade for Hamels and go for it now?

Or wait until next year, the Cubs’ eternal rallying cry?

Whatever your answer, be prepared to sacrifice.

By TONI GINNETTI For Sun-Times Media CHICAGO – The Cubs’ need for pitching depth showed all weekend against the lowly Philadelphia Phillies, who scored 21 runs on 40 hits in sweeping their first three game road series of the season.

It showed cynically – if not comically – in the nine inning when catcher David Ross “saved” the bullpen with a perfect inning – and followed it with his first home run in the bottom of the inning Sunday in the 11-5 loss.

It will show again Tuesday when manager Joe Maddon uses another fill-in for the troublesome fifth start-

er spot as the Friday trade deadline nears.

But the last three weeks have exposed the Cubs’ other problem – slumping bats in the heart of the order.

Cole Hamels’ no-hitter aside, the corps counted on most – Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Starlin Castro and Jorge Soler – have been on a collective slide for weeks.

“We have to get Anthony and KB going,” Maddon said.

“They didn’t get the full benefit of the [All Star] break [having been selected to the National League squad]. It’ll come back to them, but we have to get them freshened up a bit.

“If we get KB and Riz going, it’ll be very important for us.

“Starlin is part of the struggle too. They’re all [hitting] in that 3-for-29 range.”

Rizzo still leads the team with 16 home runs, but his last came July 7.

His average is at .282, but in the last 30 games he is hitting only .229 (24-105) with two home runs.

Bryant remains the team RBI leader with 56, but his average has dropped to .252.

He is hitting only .187 (20/107) in the last 30 games, with 43 strikeouts.

Shortstop Castro, a career .284 hitter, has dipped to .233.

He is hitting only .161 (18112) in the past 30 games with no home runs and six RBIs. Soler, who missed most of June with a sprained left ankle, has hit only .239 (17-71) since his return July 5.

“We have to get everyone going,” Maddon said. “There are a lot of runs being left on the table. Everyone is important, but we have to get those [core] guys going.”

The Phillies completed the three-game sweep behind rookie Aaron Nola (1-1), who was making only his second major league start.

Questions surround Bears before training camp On Wednesday, the Monsters of the Midway roll into Bourbonnais to open training camp and kick off their 2015 NFL season.

They will arrive seeking a fresh start and looking dramatically different than they did only 12 months ago when they were a popular playoff pick by many. The 2014 Bears struggled through a 5-11 campaign and this new group comes to town with a front office swept clean, a completely rebuilt coaching staff and Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs and Roberto Garza gone, making Robbie Gould the last remaining player from the 2006 Super Bowl team.

If the 2013 and ‘14 Bears were never truly Phil Emery’s and Marc Trestman’s Bears with the ghosts of Lovie Smith always lurking in their locker room, the new GM and head coach share no such concerns.

The Bears team arriving Wednesday will truly be Ryan Pace’s and John Fox’s team. For the most part only the quarterback remains the same.

We may never know if Jay Cutler was in fact Pace’s and Fox’s first choice, but he is their final choice. How Cutler, Fox, new offensive coordinator Adam Gase and new quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains work together will be one of the biggest stories of this training camp.

Cutler’s body language, every smile, grimace, scowl, big throw, tipped ball and interception will be logged and discussed ad nauseam by media and fans alike, as Cutler continues to enjoy the fruits and lug the burden of his $54 million guaranteed contract.

The offense won’t look that different and is likely to have only two new starters from Opening Day last year with Brandon Marshall now burning out spotlights in New York, but behind the scenes there will be battles for playing time.

Matt Forte is still Cutler’s best weapon, but running

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush backs in their eighth season in the NFL are never ascending. Rookie Jeremy Langford may be the first real threat to Forte’s carries in years.

Langford must be watched closely.

As the seventh overall pick in the draft, Kevin White is expected to start and make an impact from day one, but how often do expectations match reality in the NFL? Is Alshon Jeffery ready to be a number one receiver?

What effect Eddie Royal can have on the offense from the slot? Can Marquess Wilson can claim some of White’s snaps early on?

At tight end, Martellus Bennett is the one sure thing on this offense, and the Bears seem set with Jermon Bushrod, Matt Slauson, Will Montgomery and Kyle Long on the offensive line. But whether or not Jordan Mills can earn the right tackle spot or just keep it because there is little talent in camp to push him, and how quickly rookie Hroniss Grasu can push Montgomery at center must also be watched.

The real fun in Bourbonnais will be monitoring the defense.

Unlike the offense, it is possible Jeremiah Ratliff, Ryan Mundy and Tim Jennings will be the only players to start Week One for the Bears for the second year in a row. Jennings’ spot is not guaranteed, and we don’t know if Lamarr Houston and/or Jared Allen will earn starting nods.

Many of these questions will take a full season to answer, but the seeds will all be sown in Bourbonnais.

It should be a fascinating camp to watch.

Last week, Gov. Bruce Rauner declared to reporters that if it wasn’t for House Speaker Michael Madigan, the budget impasse would’ve been resolved.

What the governor said was highly doubtful. It’s not like in the absence of Madigan that Senate President John Cullerton and his liberal Democratic caucus would’ve eagerly gone along with the harshly anti-union aspects of Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” in exchange for a budget deal and tax hike, as the governor is demanding.

The governor is demanding things that Democrats just won’t ever go along with, like all but eliminating collective bargaining rights for unions at the local government level, killing off the prevailing wage for construction workers, and doing away with the mostly “no fault” aspect of the workers’ compensation system.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is more conservative than Cullerton, and he’d like to see some changes to the workers’ comp system, but he also has taken the side of unions in this ideological war as well. Plus, let’s get real here. There is no “absence” of Mike Madigan. He is, love him or hate him (and, if the polls are right, most people hate him), a fact of Statehouse life.

It’s true that Madigan hasn’t been cooperative during the long overtime legislative session. He even intervened in the Senate to prevent Cullerton from passing a compromise bill on property taxes this month.

Cullerton’s measure received 32 “Yes” votes – four short of the three-fifths majority needed during an overtime session. Madigan also was opposed. If you check the roll call, Sen. Martin Sandoval, who is Madigan’s Senator, didn’t vote even though he was in the chamber during the roll call. Sen. Steve Landek, whom Madigan had appointed to the Senate four years ago, voted “Present.”

The Senate Democrats were aware that Madigan was working against the bill, but Cullerton went ahead with the roll call anyway. Cullerton believes he has the votes to pass the legislation when his chamber returns to town in August.

Enough with the excuses and the eliminationist fantasies. If the governor wants an agreement, then he has to step away from his far right economic agenda and find some practical solutions to this mess or we will never even get to talking about a budget.

Democrats (and a whole lot of Republicans) are simply not going to vote to eviscerate labor unions. Period. I agree with the governor that we need some economic reforms to spur some much-needed growth. But if this governor was serious about breaking the logjam, he’d find a way to do that in concert with a Democratic super-majority.

U.S. has an ecological deficit The U.S. is using more natural resources than can be regenerated within its borders, according to a new report by international think tank Global Footprint Network.

The report, “State of the States: A New Perspective on the Wealth of Our Nation,” said the nation is using twice the renewable natural resources than are available within its borders.

“With domestic and global pressure increasing on natural resources, it’s more important than ever to manage them carefully,” GFN president Mathis Wackernagel said.

Which states need to start managing their ecological budgets? All of them.

“Although the United States is one of the richest nations in the world in terms of natural capital, it is running an ecological deficit,” the report stated.

“U.S. citizens demand twice the renewable natural resources and services that are available within our nation’s borders. Yet the economic vitality of our nation depends on these valuable ecological

assets.”

The U.S. has the second-largest share of the world’s overall ecological footprint, trailing only China, whose population is more than four times that of our great country. The total footprint of the U.S. also is nearly twice that of India, although nearly four times as many people live in India.

The GFN found the states with the largest per-person ecological footprints are Virginia, Maryland and Delaware; the states with the smallest are New York, Idaho and Arkansas.

The ecological footprint measures a population’s demand for plant-based food and fiber products, livestock and fish products, timber and other forest products, space for urban infrastructure, and forest to absorb its carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels.

Louisiana is about in the middle. The Bayou State’s natural resources include varied ecosystems and environments, from oak forest to cypress swamp. We have extremely fertile soil and a long growing season con-

ducive to agriculture. Our state is rich in wetlands and has sizable reserves of oil, natural gas, salt and sulfur.

Because Louisiana values natural capital – such as the benefits of wetlands for buffering hurricanes, providing water, reducing floods and increasing fish – GFN said the state is on the right track in developing solutions to the ecological deficit.

“Cities, states and nations shape this future every time they spend taxpayer money, particularly on longer-term projects such as energy and water infrastructure, transportation networks, housing, flood protection and land conservation,” the report stated. “Tools that recognize the value of ecological assets in the same way that we value infrastructure are needed to guide leaders at all levels of government.”

We need to create a resilient future for our children and grandchildren and do our part now.

That’s the only way to ensure Sportsman’s Paradise will continue to exist.

This week, we are looking at redoubles. The most common is by responder after partner opens with one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double. What does responder’s redouble mean?

First, that he has at least ten highcard points (or a super nine). Second, that he lacks four-card support if partner opened in a major. If partner opened in a minor, responder probably does not have five-card support.

So, this redouble announces that the opening side has the balance of power. Here are the two key points: After a responder’s redouble, either the opening side buys the contract, or the opponents play in something doubled for penalties.

All doubles by the opening side are for penalties and all passes below game are forcing.

In this deal, South had a perfectly normal takeout double, but was killed. West redoubled (yes, with a minimum), then doubled everything thereafter.

Against two diamonds doubled, West led the spade queen. East won with his ace and returned the four, his lowest card being a suit-preference signal for clubs.

West ruffed and shifted to the club seven. East won with his jack and led the spade nine.

South was in an unenviable position. If he discarded a club, East would have just led another spade. But when declarer ruffed, West overruffed and played another club.

South ended up losing one spade, one heart, four diamonds (East scored his diamond six via a trump promotion) and three clubs to go down four, minus 800.

I know times have changed since I was a new mom, but the restrictions my daughter has put on visiting her and my new grandson are unrealistic.

Since his birth three weeks ago, I have seen him only once -- at the hospital. She has taken him on two outings: one

where there were 10 people and another where there were more than 100. (My grandson has not yet received any of his childhood vaccinations.)

My daughter now says that when I visit, I must change into freshly washed clothes before entering her house.

She’s afraid that the secondhand smoke will harm him.

I’m not unintelligent. I have bought disinfectants to spray on myself, as well as breath strips. I also wash my hands, arms and face before I hold him. Am I unrealistic in thinking she’s asking too much, or should I say something to her and let her know how much she has hurt me? –

Crying Day and Night Dear Crying: I do think you

should talk to your daughter.

What she may be trying to do is encourage you to quit smoking. I doubt that she’s doing it to be hurtful.

Her motivation may be that she knows how unhealthy smoking is and would like you to be around until your grandchild is well into adulthood.

The odds of that happening will be higher if you can find a way to give up tobacco. And when you do, consider putting all the money you save – and it will be plenty – into an education fund for your grandson.
