MORRIS – It has been one year since Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity hired its first executive director, and I feel blessed to have found my way to Habitat since having ties to the organization as a college student.

The Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity board of directors knew if it wanted to grow the organization, it needed someone to help lead it going forward, and it began preparing for this stage even before a job description was created.

So much credit needs to be given to our board, which updated bylaws, researched hiring practices, readied our office space, and the list goes on before actually interviewing candidates.

Our board of directors is truly the definition of a “working board.” Each board member is either the chairperson or an integral committee member while also committing to their board duties, their career and

VIEWS Sarah Peterson family lives. We also have to give a lot of thanks to the Community Foundation of Grundy County for awarding us a $5,000 grant toward our administrative costs.

This grant frees up donations from other sources so those may be used for our building projects.

While you may not yet notice the impact having an executive director has had on our Habitat for Humanity affiliate, there has been a lot of internal work preparing us for our next step.

Next month, Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity will officially announce a new program called A Brush with Kindness.

A Brush with Kindness is an exterior home preservation program that offers painting, landscaping and

minor repair services to eligible homeowners so they can continue to live in safe, decent homes for years to come.

Since I began with Habitat last year, we have had many discussions on how to grow our affiliate.

It has become apparent in order to grow, we need to increase the number of families we serve. A Brush with Kindness will allow us to help more families without having large upfront costs like we have with building a new home.

The program also will allow us to serve current homeowners, which are ineligible for our new home program. Complete details of A Brush with Kindness will be released next month, but the program will be open to income eligible homeowners through an application process.

Annual 4-H fair continues at the Grundy County Fairgrounds over the weekend

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Dina Young has been riding horses since she was 7 years old, but the 13-year-old Channahon resident took to the ring Saturday to compete against other riders for her first time at the Grundy County 4-H Fair held at the Grundy County Fairgrounds.

After the first show, Young put on her safety helmet again, tightened the straps and, with a quick throw of the leg, she was back on her horse, Spark, to continue practicing for Sunday’s events.

“I thought 4-H would be a good start for a young horse,” Young said.

Her father, Phil Young, said they acquired Spark through a horse rescue and broke it in two years ago. He said the work his daughter has done with the horse has changed the horse completely and he was proud of her dedication to preparing it for the show.

Rescuing horses has become habit for the Young family. They rescued two from local farms, two from the Ellis House and Equestrian Center in Minooka and, most recently, two mares from Michigan,

“I want her to learn how to work with an animal,” Phil said. “I hope she can teach and project onto younger kids the benefits of working with large animals.”

na has been on a horse from the time she could sit up, often riding with her older cousins before she was ready to take the reins herself.

“I like to ride,” Kenney said as she sat outside the stall where her horse, Calvin, was

resting after a long morning of showing.

Kenney said it takes plenty of practice to prepare for showing the horse at the fair. She said pivoting was the hardest skill to teach Calvin.

Morris library elects, SHOPPING appoints new members FOR A MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

MORRIS – The Morris Area Public Library Board of Trustees recently elected two trustees and appointed two trustees.

Four trustees decided not to run for another term, according to a news release from the library. Michelle Pruim and Doug Pryor were elected to the board in the April election and were sworn in at the May meeting.

Because two seats were still open, the board put a call out to the community to fill the spots.

After reviewing several applications at the June board meeting, the board decided to appoint Barb Boma and Linda Jones.

New Board President Steve Larson said he thinks the new board members have a good variety of backgrounds that will enable the library to make solid decisions.

“It is my honor to serve as president of this institution.

Every year the library helps countless people explore and learn. I look forward to working with the trustees and staff to maintain a place that offers information and inspiration,” he said in the release.

Boma wanted to be on the library board because she’s an avid reader.

“I would like to be involved in keeping the library vital to the area and its residents.

I have worked at the library – which I enjoyed very much – and my great grandmother served on the board many years ago,” she said in the release.

According to Jones, “whether you want to escape into a good story, or want more information about the American Revolution, or just need access to a computer, the Morris Library is the place to go. As a board member, I can do my part to support and strengthen this essential resource, one that is as vital to the well-being of the community as its hospital or its schools.”

The Morris Area Public Library is open seven days a week and is located in historic downtown Morris, 604 Liberty St. The library owns about 63,000 books, DVDs, CDs and periodicals. Library patrons also have free access to almost 30,000 e-books and audiobooks.

Spirit of charity proves contagious throughout auction, raffle, events MORRIS – The spirit of St. Nick was alive and well at the annual Operation St. Nick Christmas in July fundraiser.

Tim and Cindy Harrison, who held the event at Brandt’s Tavern for five years before it was moved to Clayton’s Tap, where owners Scott and Lois Darlington, along with friends Karen Looper and Jan Close, started hosting it three years ago, said they are amazed at how the event has grown.

“We said, ‘Why can’t we have Christmas in July? More people are out and about in the summer and at Christmas they are spending money on their own families.’ ” Cindy Harrison said.

From that moment on, area residents have flocked into town for one Saturday in July to give to area children and veterans.

Joe Schmitz, founder of Operation St. Nick, said the July

event gives average working people a chance to contribute at a level that makes them comfortable.

This Saturday, they gave and then gave some more.

The live auction started at 6:30 p.m. in the back room at Clayton’s, where supporters gathered around the room and awaited bidding.

As each auction item was described, those intending to bid would whisper to the person next to them, anticipation glowing in their eyes.

When volunteer auctioneers Richard and Eric Olson, from Richard A. Olson and Associates, called out an amount, hands went up, heads nodded and the bids rose.

A popular item was a package including 16 tickets to Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville, with tube rental, lunch and a bus to transport children there. As the bids rose to $500, more people started dropping out, until Andy Fraine was left standing to win

The autographed Blackhawks jersey, which was donated back to go up for auction a second time, went home with Morris resident Ryan Bernickus despite the fact he never bid once. the package.

Fraine went to Schmitz and said something that brought tears to Schmitz’s eyes. Fraine donated the trip to a fun-filled day of water and sun to 16 kids of Schmitz’s choosing.

“He just donated this to 16 kids or families,” Schmitz said. “We’ll find 16 kids from Coal City who were affected by the tornado to go.”

“Oh, come on guys. You’re killing me,” Schmitz said over the microphone as the jersey went back out to bid.

This time the jersey sold for $2,000 to a group of bidders.

Because these bidders didn’t want the jersey, either, it was given to a young man who was there with his family to support Operation St. Nick.

That young man was Ryan Bernickus. Bernickus, a Morris resident with osteosarcoma, a cancer that starts in the bones, is a longtime Blackhawks fan.

He also received two tickets to the Blackhawks courtesy of Doug Punke. Later, the winner of the 50-50 raffle donated the $594 she won to him.

The organization raised a total of $44,579.20 after expenses, with more than $33,000 coming from the live auction alone. The money will go to 12 Days of Christmas Giving program, which is open to any Grundy County family that includes active duty officers or those who were honorably discharged.

Retired hospital VPs return as volunteers MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Less than a year after retiring from their long careers as vice presidents at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, Dennis Mahoney and Tom Meyer have returned as volunteers for the hospital’s patient transportation service.

Working together as a team, Mahoney and Meyer donate their time two full days a month, driving patients to medical appointments all over the community.

“We really enjoy it,” Mahoney said in a news release.

“On our very first day, the two patients that we took to Seneca were so thankful. They said they wouldn’t have had a way to get to their appointment if it weren’t for the patient transportation service.”

Mahoney and Meyer aren’t the first retired Morris Hospital vice presidents to give their time back to the organization.

Carol Harrington, retired vice president of patient care services since 2008, serves on the Morris Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and her successor, Carol Havel, who

“Volunteering makes it easier to stay in touch with people at the hospital,” Mahoney said in the release. “Plus, it feels good to be helping out.”

Owen Chadwick, Christianity historian, dies at 99 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Scholar and priest Owen Chadwick, whose works explored the history of Christianity over two millennia, has died at the age of 99.

He went on to hold professorships in both ecclesiastical and modern history, a relatively unusual feat.

Chadwick’s first book, “John Cassian: A Study in Primitive Monasticism,” looked at the early centuries of Christianity, but much of his work focused on the post-Reformation period.

His many books included “A History of Christianity,” “The Reformation,” “The Vic-

Russian film director Vasily Pichul dies at 54 The ASSOCIATED PRESS MOSCOW – Russian news agencies say film director Vasily Pichul, whose gritty perestroika-era movie “Little Vera” attracted international attention, has died at age 54.

The 1988 movie caused a sensation at home for sex scenes that were unusually revealing for generally prudish Soviet cinema. It also was straightforwardly critical of Soviet society and provincial mores. Vera is both the lead character’s name and the Russian word for faith.

Channahon rolls its way to Mustang title

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – It’s one of the oldest sayings in the coach’s handbook: Keep hitting the ball hard and it will find a hole.

Coaches generally use that line when their team has hardhit balls go right at opposing defenders for outs.

Channahon Mustang coach Frenando Rizo used it after the second inning Sunday in the championship game of the Mustang (10U) Region after his team had hit balls hard in their first two at-bats, but had nothing to show for it as Berwyn defenders seemed to be right in line with everything Channahon hit.

“I told them after the second inning that we were hitting the ball hard,” Rizo said.

“I told them that if they keep doing that, the hits are going to fall in.

“Sometimes it’s easy for kids this age to get discouraged, but they didn’t and they kept hitting it hard and we got some runs.”

The team listened and the hits finally started to drop. By the time the third inning was over, Channahon had erased a 2-0 deficit and turned it into a 6-2 lead en route to a 7-3 victory and a trip to next weekend’s North Zone Tournament in Lafayette, Indiana.

Berwyn had scored a run in each of the first two innings, both times when a runner stole third and the throw got away and allowed the runner to score.

In the bottom of the third, however, the Channahon offense sprang to life.

Dominic Cioni led off the inning with a hard-hit ball to short that the shortstop couldn’t handle and he was safe at first. Cioni then stole second and third before Gabe Knowles singled to right to bring him home. With Knowles running on the pitch, Jeremy Morrero doubled to left-center, with Knowles coming all the way home with the tying run.

That was all Gessner needed, as he set down Berwyn in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings, striking out two in the fourth and all three in the fifth. He went the full six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine.

“Once we got the lead, I didn’t want to let them get it back,” Gessner said.

The defense was solid all day for Channahon, especially with Roberson at third. He contained first-inning damage with a nice backhand play on a ball down the line and threw the runner out. He also recorded assists in the third and fourth innings.

“Our defense was real good,” Rizo said. “I was just

telling Michael [Roberson] that he was a vacuum cleaner over there today. And, Carter seemed to get stronger as the game went on. He struggled a litte bit early, but he really got in a groove and was strong at the end.

“This is a fun team to be around. They love to play and they love to get dirty. They run the bases well and everyone, up and down the lineup, hits well. They are real excited to go to Indiana next week for the Zone tournament.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The summer tradition of football teams playing 7-on-7 competitions against one another continued Friday morming, as Plainfield South visited Morris.

The two teams played three 20-minute periods with a running clock, and the rules were similar to regular football, minus the hitting. The offense started on its own 20 and tried to move down the field. If the defense intercepted a pass, the offense got the ball at the point of the interception.

Morris had scored three touchdowns to Plainfield South’s one through two periods, and the Redskin offense also had an interception by junior Michael Cryder.

The day served to solidify the season’s bright outlook for the Redskins.

“The kids are really coming together on both offense and defense,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “That’s been nice to see this summer.”

During the first period, Morris’ defense limited what Plainfield South could do on its deeper routes, as the defensive backs had the Cougar receivers well covered.

In the second period, South ran a lot of short routes for completions and was able to methodically move down the field.

But that wasn’t a bad thing according to Thorson.

“When an offense does that against us, it gives us a chance to work on converging on the ball,” he said. “We had them covered deep, so our guys did a real good job of converging when someone caught a short pass and stopping them before they could get too far.”

While many of the starting offensive spots are still up for grabs, Thorson has a pretty good idea what the defense will look like. The players who have been the starting group this summer – Payton Bruyn and Jake Webb at cornerback and Nathan Guth and Michael Cryder as safeties – have had their work cut out for them.

Watch out when Going on Rodon warms up cation?

CLEVELAND – When Jose Quintana was shutting out the Indians on Friday, the White Sox pitching coach went over to rookie left-hander Carlos Rodon and pointed to Quintana’s 2-to-1 stikes-to-walks ratio.

“Look up on the board, Rodon, look at the strikes to balls, it’s 2-to-1,” Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said. “If you ever get 2-to-1, you’ll kill. You’ll kill.”

Command seems to be the only thing standing between Rodon and long-term, sustained excellence, and when he brings it along with his top-shelf slider and mid-90s fastball as he did in the Sox’ 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians Sunday to complete a fourgame sweep, look out. Rodon, who leads the Sox in walks with 44, did not walk a batter, completing an entire cycle by the starting rotation without a walk, the first time Sox pitchers have strung together five starts without a walk since 1972.

Rodon threw 111 pitches, 73 for strikes, over a career-high 62⁄3 innings. He struck out nine and gave up five hits.

The gem for the Sox’ first round 2014 draft pick (third overall) follows a four-inning start against the Cardinals at U.S. Cellular Field in which Rodon walked three and gave up seven runs in four innings.

In his previous three starts, he had 14 walks.

“There has to be a certain amount of patience for a guy who was pitching against Appalachian State [a year ago] and the hitters were 5-foot-6,” Cooper said. “And he’s doing all right. How many starting pitchers come to the big leagues that just grab that brass ring the first time around and go on to superstardom? Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson did not, and they are Hall of Famers.

“This kid just had his first spring training and everything he’s doing this year is new and different – everything.”

With only Carlos Sanchez’ homer against Danny Salazar in the third inning – the rookie second baseman’s second in two games and the second of his career – and the red-hot Melky Cabrera’s RBI single in the seventh providing his only run support, Rodon looked like a seasoned veteran leading the Sox to their first four-game sweep on the road since 2007 at Tampa Bay. The result hiked the Sox’s record to 46-50 going into a four-game series against the Red Sox in Boston.

“Just keep playing,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said, using his standard answer to questions about the possibility of trading Jeff Samardzija just when the right-hander is peaking and the Sox are playing their best of the season in all three phases.

Rodon worked out of a second-third no-outs jam in the third when first baseman Jose Abreu cut down Brandon Moss at home, and shortstop Alexei Ramirez started a double play with a barehand grab. If Rodon eased up on his fastball just a tad and had better control as catcher Tyler Flowers noted, perhaps the rookie is figuring things out. Figuring out the Sox’ chances of creeping into wild card contention with five teams ahead in the loss column leaves the Sox knowing the challenge is significant.

But they’re feeling good about themselves.

“Why not us?” Rodon said.

“That’s the mentality we’ve got to have. Why not us? Why can’t we do it? So just keep on winning, keep on plugging away, and this brand of baseball we’ve been playing this weekend should keep it going.”

Include everyone in Republican debates “INCLUDE them all!”

That’s the call from Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, regarding the number of Republican presidential candidates who should be part of the televised debate process.

Donald Trump’s continuing misadventures give credence to Sabato’s suggestion.

Trump’s derogatory remarks about Mexicans during his campaign kickoff announcement resulted in NBC cutting ties with The Donald, but didn’t hurt his candidacy. The king of bombast has remained at or near the top of various polls tracking Republican voters’ preferences in the crowded field.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who won the Republican nomination for president in 2008, said last week that Trump had stirred up the “crazies” during an earlier appearance in Phoenix. The two went backand-forth a few times after that, with Trump ultimately saying during an appearance in Iowa that McCain was “not a war hero.”

Of course, McCain absolutely is a war hero, having survived 5 ½ years of torture and maltreatment in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp after his Navy jet was shot down in 1967. The physical toll from that experience lingers with McCain today.

Trump sniffed that, “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Cute.

Yet given the rules in place for upcoming GOP debates, Trump is almost guaranteed a spot on stage while more serious and viable candidates will be left out. That’s because only the top 10 candidates in recent national polls will be included in the Fox News debate on Aug. 6 and the CNN debate on Sept.

16. Sabato noted that those who fall outside the top 10 “will attend separate debates guaranteed to have a fraction of the viewership and a fraction of the potential payoff.”

The GOP field stands at 16 after the announcement Tuesday by Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Writing last week at politico.com, Sabato made the point that the margin of error in surveys “is so large that it is statistically impossible to determine who should fill the last two or three spots in the top 10.”

The 10-person cutoff was made with convenience in mind. It’s easier to manage a group that size than it would be to manage 16 or 17 people.

The flip side is that impressive candidates like Carly Fiorina and Chris Christie could very well fall outside the top 10, which would hurt their chances of staying in the race, while Trump gets the opportunity to further his sensational, shock-jock cause. Sabato suggests that all candidates with at least 1 percent in the polling averages, or who are current or former governors or senators, be invited to the first two prime-time debates. Make them back-to-back 90-minute debates, with a lottery to determine who’s in the first debate (the remainder would appear in the second debate).

“If both Fox and CNN adopt this arrangement, the selection process would almost certainly produce four different combinations of candidates going head-to-head in August and September events,” Sabato said. “Or perhaps the CNN face-off could switch up the candidates in some reasonable fashion to ensure variety and feature very different combos from the earlier Fox debate.”

At the bridge table, redoubles often double the grief of less experienced players. This week, let’s look at the various meanings for redouble.

First, the rarest redouble, which means: “Help, partner, we are in big trouble.”

Look at the North hand. East opened one diamond, South overcalled one heart, and West passed. Now North was not strong enough to act, so he passed. East reopened with a takeout double, which West passed, turning his partner’s takeout double into a penalty double, announcing long hearts.

North, anticipating that this was not his side’s best spot, made an SOS redouble. (If he had been happy with one heart doubled, he would have had to pass.)

South ran to one spade, which East doubled for penalty. North made his second rescue redouble, which resulted in South’s playing in two clubs doubled – after an auction lasting 24 calls!

West correctly led his club, attempting to cut down on declarer’s trump tricks.

East won with his king and returned a trump. South won with his 10 and led his diamond queen. East took that with his ace and led another trump, which resulted in down one.

East had to shift to his spade queen when in with the diamond ace to get the contract down two, which was tough to find. The curious may work it out. ******

Standard lifestyle changes help treat silent ischemia Dear Dr. K: The results of a recent stress test showed that I have “silent ischemia.”

I haven’t felt any pain or discomfort. I wouldn’t even have known about it if not for the stress test. Does it need to be treated if it’s not causing any symptoms?

Dear Reader: The word “ischemia” comes from a Latin term that means “stopping blood.” If a stress test shows you have cardiac ischemia, blood flow to a part of your heart muscle is less than the heart muscle needs when you exercise. The most likely culprit is a coronary artery narrowed by cholesterol-laden plaque.

A bout of ischemia can happen when your heart is made to work harder, such as during exercise, anger

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff or emotional stress. The resulting shortfall in oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle can cause the chest discomfort known as angina.

This pain may spread to your shoulders, arms, neck or jaw.

But here’s a little-known fact: Sometimes ischemia causes no symptoms. You might not feel anything at all.

This so-called silent ischemia is surprisingly common. Approximately 2 to 4 percent of middle-aged U.S. men are estimated to have it. And about 10 percent of middle-aged U.S. men who have cardiac risk factors – such as obesity,

smoking, high cholesterol and uncontrolled high blood pressure – may have silent ischemia.

In people with diabetes, the risk may be higher. That’s because diabetes increases the risk of having heart disease, and because diabetes injures the nerves that feel heart pain, making it silent.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Peter Stone, director of the vascular profiling research group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He said that people with heart disease may have five to 10 times as many episodes of silent ischemia as angina.

Silent ischemia is exactly like angina, except that you don’t feel it.

Some people have only angina and others have only

silent episodes. But most people with narrowed arteries have both types.

Having ischemia – whether it’s painful or not – makes you more prone to having a heart attack or to develop a dangerous heart rhythm that can cause sudden death. (Sudden death can occur without a heart attack, and many heart attacks do not lead to sudden death).

That’s why it’s important to treat ischemia, even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms. Your risk of heart attack or sudden death is particularly high if you have other factors that raise your risk of heart disease.

Treatment begins with lifestyle changes. Follow the standard heart-protecting habits: eat right, get regular

exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Also, keep blood pressure and cholesterol down – with medications if necessary.

Ischemia may also be treated with drugs, including: • beta blockers, which lower the heart’s workload; • calcium-channel blockers and nitrates, which widen blood vessels; • ranolazine (Ranexa), a drug that appears to increase blood flow to areas of the heart affected by ischemia.

If your ischemia is severe, you may need an artery-opening procedure called angioplasty.
