Two arrested after a police pursuit led to a shootout near I-55 in Channahon

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS and BRIAN STANLEY Shaw Media CHANNAHON – Two Manhattan residents were in custody Wednesday afternoon after a police pursuit led to a shootout near Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road in Channahon which caused traffic backups along the northbound lanes.

Luke Bertolini, 23, and Kadi Craig, both of Manhattan, were later identified by Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold as the suspects of the shootout, as well as a possible second incident involving gunfire.

Both incidents occurred Wednesday afternoon. As of early Wednesday evening, Wold said charges were pending against the two.

Wold said authorities responded about 2 p.m. to the report of an armed robbery at the Big Fish Bar and Grill, 27425 S. Will Road in Wilmington. Wold later clarified that a witness assumed the establish-

John Mathias, owner of Big Fish, said a man came in to the establishment and made comments that alarmed the staff before he went back out to the Harbor Marina.

“He asked my bartender, ‘Can you fight?’ and went back outside [and] fired two or three shots in the marina,” Mathias said. “It looked like he was on something.”

vehicle to I-55 and Arsenal Road. Wold said one police officer, not a Channahon officer, exchanged gunfire with the male suspect.

“The suspects exchanged gunfire with police, but no one was struck before the confrontation ended,” Wold said.

There were no injuries from the incident.

Wold said Wednesday the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force would investigate both Bertolini’s alleged shooting outside the marina about 2 p.m. and the gunfight with police 25 minutes later.

“There are so many witnesses and evidence to collect it may be some time before the suspects are interviewed,” Wold said Wednesday night.

The incident caused major backups on I-55. One of the northbound lanes was shut down for some time as police investigated the incident, and drivers were encouraged to avoid the area if possible, according to Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera.

• Barry K. Delonocker, 34, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Sunday on charges of driving under the influence and endangering the life of a child. He was given an Aug. 24 court date.

• Peter Zouganelis, 53, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies on charges of driving under the influence, resisting, obstructing and aggravated assault. He was given an Aug. 24 court date.

• Dustin D. Arnold, 33, was arrested by Coal City police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on a charge of domestic battery.

• Shaun A. Cailey, 26, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Monday on three warrants: a Grundy County warrant on a charge of assault, a LaSalle County failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of assault, and an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant on a charge of a parole violation.

• Jose L. Ramirez, 22, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and taken to the Grundy County Jail on Tuesday on charges of driving under the influence and driving while license suspended. He also was cited for driving in the wrong lane.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Hailey Hoaglund reflected this week on her recent volunteer trip to Thailand.

While carrying loads of corn over her shoulder one day, Hoaglund encountered a single mother who slept under a roof held up by four poles and lived outside.

Hoagland is a 2015 Morris Community High School graduate. Although she is one month away from starting college at Purdue University in Indiana, she still thinks about her time spent in the other country.

“It was eye-opening,” Hoaglund said. “If you have a roof, toilet and bed there, you’re golden.”

Carrying loads of corn a quarter-mile each way all day was one of the most physically difficult things Hoaglund said she’s done. During her twoweek stay at the Elephant Nature Park – a reservation and sanctuary in northern Thailand for rescued elephants – she also bathed, fed and cleaned up after the animals.

The elephants are rescued from tourist camps and logging projects, and are usu-

appreciating life more, Hoaglund felt she grew as a leader on the trip. She said she encouraged others who carried corn with her to keep pushing forward.

Leadership skills are just the beginning of the training she will receive in joining the Marines.

Hoaglund is a recipient of a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps National Scholarship. Only 160 scholarships are granted nationwide each year and Hoaglund placed in the top eight out of more than 2,000 qualified applicants. The seven recipients ranked above her were men.

Hoaglund was recruited by Marine Corps. Sgt. Rafael Estrada, who encouraged her to pursue the rigorous application process.

“When we started talking I just noticed she’s very competitive,” Estrada said. “It’s one of those things where you feel a certain way. Most recruiters never have a person win this scholarship.”

MORRIS – A dispute over parking has the monthly Junk in the Trunk fundraiser flea market looking for a new location. Ken Willis, co-founder of JITT, was told Monday

by Robert Munch, who owns the parking lot JITT uses, that a neighboring business owner has threatened legal action if JITT continues to hold the market there.

Gene Funk, owner of Morris Liquors, said the flea market is taking up his customer parking.

“When this market is going on, my customers are unhappy that they have to park all of the way by the gas station when they want to come into the store. They want to get in and get their beer and get out,” Funk said.

“Our bean fields down by Dwight and north of Minooka were hurt worse with water damage,” Donna Jeschke said.

“We will know more about the corn after pollination and yield checks in a few weeks.”

She said the concern for the corn crops is if there was still enough nitrogen in the field to help ear development on the stalks.

While the Jeschkes got all their fields in, they do have damaged areas that weren’t able to be replanted in time to get a crop.

Doug Bailey, chief program specialist with USDA Farm Service Agency in Springfield, said officials are seeking a secretarial disaster declaration to make farmers eligible for low-interest loans to help with flood-damaged crops.

He said damage differs across the state with some counties seeing little loss, to others seeing significant loss, because of the wettest June on record. The USDA’s field report for this week found more than half of Illinois’ soybean crop and 44 percent of the corn crop were in poor-to-fair condition.

– Grundy, Kendall and LaSalle – where it does business, they are seeing about 2 percent noplant claims from farmers who were unable to get their crops into the field.

She said crop insurance covers replant, but for many farmers there wasn’t a chance to get back into the field.

“In June, the rain seemed like it never quit, and farmers didn’t see much planted after the first week in June,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said although claims are up this year, they probably won’t know the full effect of the rains until the combines are in the field harvesting the surviving crops.

Even with insurance, farmers will face losses, as insurance only covers a percentage of the crops, and are based on a 10-year average yield.

Funk said he would allow the JITT people to continue using the lot if they would personally take care of the parking issue.

“I’m fine with it if they hire someone to stand there and tell people that these six or seven spots are for my liquor store parking only. But they are not smart enough to do that,” Funk said. “They are making money; pay some kid

to do it, and it will be fine.”

Willis said he can’t afford to pay anyone to do that because “if I started paying people to do things, then I don’t have money for the charities JITT supports.”

Willis charges a $10 per parking spot for his flea market, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to a designated charity each month. The flea market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every third Sunday, April through October.

“I understand what his idea is, but paying someone to sit and interrogate people on where they are going when they park in one of those spots Gene wants for his liquor store seems pretty invasive, and I’m sure we will make people upset over that way ,too,” Willis said.

He also commented that volunteers are scarce, so that option wasn’t going to work either.

Christmas in July Operation St. Nick fundraiser set Saturday for holiday giving program

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The spirit of Christmas is alive and well year-round in Morris with Operation St. Nick providing bikes to children for the summer, back-to-school supplies at the end of summer and hosting its annual Christmas in July fundraiser.

The proceeds from Saturday’s event – which will be held at Clayton’s Tap by owner’s Lois and Scott Darlington – will be used for the 12 Days of Christmas Giving program, which honors 12 active military or honorably discharged veterans who served at least two years in active duty.

“The 12 Days of Christmas Giving is a wonderful part of the seven projects we do,” Operation St. Nick founder Joe Schmitz said. “Lois picked up the event for the last three years and it’s been a blast.”

Schmitz said the organization grants wishes of veterans up to $2,500, and have covered everything from gifts for kids to paying rent.

Lois Darlington said there was no way they could turn down hosting the event with the wide-reaching help Operation St. Nick gives.

“I think Operation St. Nick is the most widespread group in the county that helps children and families,” Darlington said. “They have helped so many people we personally know.”

This year’s event will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday when raffle and silent auction items will open for bid. At 6:30 p.m., the live auction will start.

Schmitz said hosting the event throughout the day allows people to stop in and bid or buy a raffle ticket who otherwise would be unable to attend just an evening event.

Head of pension system visits Dwight Rotary Club

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – The head of the state’s Teachers Retirement System spoke Wednesday to the Rotary Club of Dwight, providing his answer to who’s to blame for the state’s money troubles.

It’s not Gov. Bruce Rauner, he said. “It’s not House Speaker Michael Madigan or Senate President John Cullerton.”

“The [underfunded pension liability] has gotten so big, I think everyone’s heads are exploding right now,” TRS Executive Director Dick Ingram said as he addressed a crowd at Wednesday’s Dwight Rotary luncheon.

“That’s where the problem is,” he said. “That’s why there’s a huge clash in the budget right now. Because we and the [other pension systems] have absorbed so much of the general revenue.”

The state’s pension contributions this year make up about $7 billion – or 20 percent of the state’s budget, he said.

Other states average closer to 4 to 7 percent.

The cash-strapped state of Illinois is grappling with a $111 billion deficit in what’s needed to cover its employee retirement obligations – all because of past administrations’ choices to skimp on decades of mandatory pension payments, he said.

The TRS group is among the largest in the nation with about 160,000 active teachers, 112,000 retirees and another 120,000 inactive members. It’s also one of the most underfunded – by about $60 billion.

“If we had been regularly

funded during the course of our history, the appropriation of TRS would be [fully funded],” he said.

Pension payments are protected from the state budget impasse, he said, with pensions being one of the few continuing appropriations protected by the Illinois Constitution, along with debt service, human service programs tied to consent decrees and teacher health care costs.

Norma Hedges, a retired teacher from Morris, was among TRS members in attendance Wednesday. Hedges retired in 1993 from Morris Community High School.

She said the money lawmakers and past administrations diverted for decades from the TRS and other pension systems were unfair “subsidies for taxpayers,” she said.

Ingram said lawmakers are limited in choices on how to pay for the underfunded pension liability moving forward, noting the recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling declaring any changes to locked-in pension promises to be unconstitutional.

Since the fiscal year began July 1 without a budget, Rauner often has pointed fingers at Madigan and Cullerton, while the two Democratic caucus leaders have done the same to Rauner. But Ingram said the state’s pension problem is the true culprit when you put the political rhetoric aside.

“It’s unfortunate that in this state, as opposed to many others, we haven’t had the discipline at the state level forever to pay the costs that should have been paid,” he said. “So now we’re making up for it.”

Dick Nanninga, scorer in 1978 World Cup final, has died The ASSOCIATED PRESS AMSTERDAM – Dick Nanninga, a former Netherlands striker who scored in the 1978 World Cup final, has died, Dutch club Roda JC said. He was 66.

Nanninga made only 15 appearances for the Dutch national side, but he played in the 3-1 loss to Argentina in the 1978 final. Only three Netherlands teams have made it to a World Cup final, the others being in 1974 and 2010.

With the Netherlands trailing host Argentina 1-0 with eight minutes to play in Buenos Aires, Nanninga met a cross with power to level the score. The Dutch lost in extra time. The exact cause of death was not announced Tuesday, but Nanninga had already spent months in a coma in 2012 when a lower leg had to be amputated.

‘Ragtime’ author E.L. Doctorow dies in New York

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Few minds were as playful and as serious as E.L. Doctorow’s.

Conjurer of old-time gangsters and ragtime stars. Commentator on wars and presidents and the laws of the land.

Student of political and literary history and how they tell us who we are now.

Doctorow, who died Tuesday at age 84, was the rare American writer to move gracefully between lives as engaged citizen and solitary inventor.

“Underlying everything – the evocative flashes, the dogged working of language – is the writer’s belief in the story as a system of knowledge,” he wrote in the introduction to his essay collection “Creationists,” published in 2006.

“This belief is akin to the scientist’s faith in the scientific method as a way to truth.”

Doctorow was among the most honored authors of the past 40 years.

His prizes included the National Humanities Medal, the National Book Critics Circle award and both competitive and honorary National Book Awards.

He forged his reputation around a series of novels – most set in and around New York City – that carried readers from the 1800s to modern times. “His books taught me much,” Obama wrote.

“With each new president, the nation is conformed spiritually. He is the artificer of our malleable national soul,” he wrote in the liberal weekly The Nation, for which he was a frequent contributor.

“I would want a presidential temperament keen with a love of justice and with the capacity to recognize the honor of humbled and troubled people.”

“Fiction goes everywhere, inside, outside, it stops, it goes, its action can be mental. Nor is it time-driven,” Doctorow wrote in the novel “City of God,” published in 2000.

In high school she started weight lifting and practicing mixed martial arts because she didn’t like the way she looked. Because of her improved physical ability, friends approach her for fitness advice.

Hoaglund will major in engineering at Purdue and enter the Marines as an officer.

ton Street that would be ideal, but he is waiting to hear back from Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan on the matter, since the lot is Grundy County property.

“It meets all the criteria such as nearby bathrooms, places for people to go eat, and it is a good location with traffic,” Willis said. “It’s not as ideal as where we are now, but people can park all around the lot on the street, and we can make it work.

“However, I still just can’t see why this is such a big deal.

Beiswanger-Miller family holds reunion MORRIS HERALD–NEWS DWIGHT – The 44th annual Beiswanger-Miller family reunion was held June 28 at Renfrew Park in Dwight.

Included among the 85 members present were Marjorie Lauritzen of Dwight, who was the oldest at age 95, and Keegan Epperson of Washington, the youngest at 11 months.

Lorene and Chuck Branz from Loudon, Tennessee, traveled the farthest, and Jim Lauritzen from Dwight was the family member living closest.

Other family members came from Valparaiso, Indiana, and the towns of Rockford, Huntley, Streator, Washington, LeRoy, Emington, Aurora, Bloomington, Odell and Morris, according to a news release from the family.

Ten family members who brought recipes from the family cookbook, which was

“We were at one, blood to blood, as no other kind of union could make us,” the English essayist Malcolm Muggeridge wrote, recalling giving his wife his own blood during a critical medical moment.

“To give life,” he continued, “this was what love was for; to give it in all circumstances and eventualities, whether God creating the universe, or a male and female creating another human being; whereas to destroy life, be it in a fertilized ovum one second after conception, or in some octogenarian or sufferer from a fatal illness, was the denial of life and so the antithesis of love.”

President Obama has made clear that any critics of the pro-abortion health group are enemies of women, saying such critics want to “turn back the clock to policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st century. Sexual revolutionary ideology can’t be our lodestar.

Harvesting the organs of innocents who were sacrificed on the altar of choice is where it gets us. Recognizing this can be a moment that revivifies, like the gift that Muggeridge gave his wife.

E-cycling gets a boost in Illinois As the speed at which household electronics – computers, televisions and cellphones, for example – become obsolete continues to accelerate, consumers, manufacturers and communities face a greater responsibility to ensure such items are properly recycled and don’t end up harming the environment.

Think about all of the new and obsolete electronics that occupy space in an average home: multiple TVs of varying ages and the accompanying remote controls; forgotten video game consoles and games; landline phones replaced by cellphones replaced by smartphones; VHS, DVD and Blu-ray players; hulking desktop computers made obsolete by lightning-fast laptop computers; portable music devices; piles of cables, keyboards, mice, routers, batteries and chargers; and small kitchen appliances, from more traditional blenders and coffeemakers to that bread machine that was a wedding gift and the quesadilla maker that collects dust on a shelf.

Indeed, we live in a digital age, and we enjoy our gadgets.

But while manufacturers are happy to rapidly churn out newer and faster electronics for consumers to purchase, on the whole they haven’t been quite as eager to encourage consumers to recycle their old electronics. There’s a reason for that: Recycling electronics is expensive.

Comparatively speaking, recycling newspaper and aluminum cans is a breeze. But electronics, which contain glass, metals and plastics, are a different story. Some of the components, although scarce or expensive to produce, require greater effort to retrieve from the devices they were used in. Disassembly can take time, and toxic substances may be encountered.

Cellphones, for example, contain valuable copper, silver, gold and palladium.

Other electronics, such as older TVs and monitors, may contain potentially hazardous heavy metals or lead.

That means resources and events designed to encourage recycling of these items can be hard to come by in some areas. And in the absence of an alternative, consumers

may be tempted to dump unwanted electronics in the garbage or simply allow them to collect dust in the basement. Locally, there’s good news on the electronics recycling front. Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed legislation that makes electronics manufacturers more accountable for encouraging consumers and communities to recycle products, prohibits them from charging local governments for the collection of recyclable electronics, and ups Illinois’ electronics recycling goal.

These changes were needed to help ensure expensive electronics recycling – or “e-cycling” – does not become cost prohibitive for communities, causing collection efforts to go the way of console TVs and rotary phones.

Meanwhile, it is hoped the state’s updated e-cycling law encourages more Illinois communities to offer collection events and helps consumers come to realize the importance of recycling in a world where electronics are designed for obsolescence.

Burling’s leadership pushes her to top honor

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com Even though the 2015 girls soccer season didn’t end how Emily Burling and her Morris teammates would have liked, it was still a good year.

Burling, who led the team with 15 goals and was named all-conference in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, earned the honor of Morris Herald-News Player of the Year.

“We wanted to win another regional and get a win in the sectional this year,” Burling said. “But it didn’t work out that way. We still had a good year, though.”

The Redskins’ season ended with a 5-1 loss to Joliet Catholic Academy in the Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Regional semifinal. Along the way, however, Morris put up a solid 8-8-1 record.

“We had a pretty good year,” said Burling, who was one of the four team captains, along with senior Katherine Gallick, and juniors Amanda Grant and Emma Dingbaum.

“We had a real cohesive bunch of girls and we had a lot of fun together.

“One of the biggest things for us this year was that we always felt we could win every time we played.”

One game that stood out for Burling during the season was the Redskins’ 7-0 win over Yorkville on senior night. Morris defeated the Foxes the previous two years in tight games for the regional championship, and an earlier game between the two teams at Yorkville during the season ended in a 2-all tie.

Everything seemed to click that senior night, however.

“That Yorkville game really sticks out,” Burling said.

“If you ask anyone on the team which game was our best, they will say that one. We have played tight games with [Yorkville] throughout my career, so we knew going in that it was going to be a tough game and we would have to play hard.

“We played our best game of the year. No way did we think that we would win 7-0 like that, but we did.”

Ironically, the team’s leading scorer did not score in the big win, but Burling was always more about the team than her own stats. In fact, another game she recalls was a loss.

“It was our first game against Geneseo,” she said. “In the first half, we had a lot of problems. But after halftime in that game, we really started to play well. We realized we needed to step up our game and we played great in the second half.

“Even though we lost that game, that was when we showed how good we can be.”

As a captain, it was up to Burling to make sure the team reached that level.

“Katherine [Gallick] and I had been captains our junior year, but this year was different,” Burling said. “We talked about how we wanted the season to go. The team was a little

more laid-back our junior year, and this year, we wanted to be more intense. We talked to the girls about having loyalty to the team and that effort is everything.

“We knew we needed to do that to lead and motivate the team.”

It was something that Burling had learned from playing basketball during the winter season.

“We only had four seniors on the basketball team,” she said. “We decided we wanted this season to be the best it could be, so we had to keep everybody’s energy up. Even on the bus to away games, we got the girls ready to play, and we ended up having a real good season. That experience definitely helped when it came to soccer season. I knew I could be a leader.”

Burling has been playing soccer most of her life, and the experience she gained from being on the field certainly helped her this season.

“I have been playing for 13 years,” she said. “I was always a striker when I was young, but my sophomore and junior years, I played outside midfield. When I moved back to striker this year, I knew more about where the ball was going to be coming from.

“We also really worked as a team. If it wasn’t for the defense getting the ball back or the passers getting me the ball, I wouldn’t have scored. There’s 11 people on the field for a reason. You can’t play one against 11. If you don’t play as a team, then you just have no chance to win.”

Burling plans to use that knowledge in the future, as she

will study elementary education at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with the aim of becoming a teacher and coach.

“There is a soccer club team that I might join down there,” she said. “I just decided that varsity soccer is a lot of time that I would rather commit to my academics. But I’m not going to give up soccer. I’ve been playing it so long, it’s a part of me now.

“One thing I will take away from my time on the soccer team here is the friendships.

You get so close to the girls on the team. You have to be friends off the field, too, and care about them as people, not just teammates. We will all stay in touch and I look forward to coming back from college and going to games and cheering on the girls.”

Greenup, a former Bob Tattersall Hard Charger award recipient, started inside the front row after Erica Ensor elected to start at the tail. Greenup led all 30 laps but it wasn’t easy win.

On the initial start, Greenup and Kyle O’Gara went two-wide for the first five laps before a caution flew. Greenup held off Ryan Probst before an extra push at the conclusion of lap 27 from Probst found himself facing the opposite way on the front stretch after spinning out of turn four. Greenup breezed the final three laps.

O’Gara, making his first appearance of the season at the Grundy County Speedway, finished second. Tyler Baran rounded out the podium, finishing third. Probst came back to finish fourth and Nick Baran finished fifth. Patrick Bruns picked up another win in the Illini Racing Series division.

Teammate Max Pozsgai finished second. Travis Mahoney, Erica Ensor and Mike Anderson rounded out the top five.

Ed Ensor, the 2011 Classic Modified champion, cruised to a win over Darren Ihrke and defending modified champion Greg Wills. Jordan Caskey won for the second time this year in the Midwest Legacy Series.

In today’s deal, look at the North and East hands. South is in three no-trump. After West leads the club queen, how should East try to stay happy?

North was a trick too strong for his three-diamond rebid, but nothing else was better.

East should stop to consider the alternatives. In no-trump, far more often than not, if third hand wins the first trick, he returns his partner’s suit.

But if East does that here, how many tricks can declarer cash? At least 10: two hearts, seven diamonds (even if South has a void) and one club.

After taking the first trick with East’s club ace, the defenders must find four spade winners immediately.

The best chance to do that is for East to lead the spade 10 or queen.

With this layout, the defenders do take four spade tricks and defeat the contract.

Note that here, shifting to a low spade at trick two is no good. Declarer just plays low from his hand.

The only time it is better to lead the spade two is when West has the spade ace-king-jack-tripleton and thinks of winning the first spade trick with his king, not with the jack.

In this situation, if you need two spade tricks, lead low; if you need three or four tricks, lead high.

Dear Abby: I never used to be a supporter of same-sex marriage. During the 2008 presidential elections, I posted my opinions about it on social media. Since then, I have changed my mind. The most significant reason is that I worked closely with a gay woman for four years. After I got to know her, her wife and two children, I realized they are the same as any other happy family.

I feel I may have offended some friends when I posted those views -- specifically, my best friend from childhood, who has come out as gay. I’d like to send her a message letting her know my opinion has changed and that I support her.
