Grundy starts budget hearings

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee started hearings Monday evening that will lead the county to adopt a budget in November.

“Historically, the county has worked through the finances first and then looked at revenue,” County Administrator Doug Pryor told the committee members. “The revenue projections are significantly down. Unfortunately, we need to look at those first.”

Pryor said Tuesday the county will see almost $2 million in revenue lost. About $1.7 million of that comes from the loss of supplemental sales tax after the Regional Transportation Authority sued Morris and Channahon, as well as other municipalities in the state, for using taxing strategies enticing companies to open small purchasing offices in Grundy County to take advantage of low sales tax rates, also known as point of sale.

He noted property tax also is down by $120,000.

Moving forward, the county is facing about a $5 million to $7 million loss in equalized assessed values because of the Coal City tornado that hit the area June 22. The county will see the adverse affects of the property tax payments in 2016 when taxes are due, according to Pryor. The budget hearings are scheduled to take place over the next two months as each department’s budget is

presented.

On Monday, the committee looked at the county administrator, the county administration building, contingencies, the county board and human resources budgets.

County Board Chairman David Welter said in addition to the finance committee, board members Deb Warning and Kerry Courtright were invited to join so there was a continuity in people attending because of some finance committee members not being able to make every meeting.

Courtright questioned the travel expenditures for human resources, which saw an increase of about $800.

Human resources director Deborah Jankiewicz explained the additional costs in both the travel line and continuing education line were for a conference, which typically takes place in Galena, being moved to Tennessee.

Jankiewicz said with changes in the Affordable Care Act and exempt and nonexempt statuses, the continued education for her and her assistant was important. She said she would forgo the conference if the board found it was not financially feasible.

“For now I’m comfortable with them attending, especially as laws change,” Welter told the committee.

A budget hearing was scheduled for Tuesday evening and more are scheduled for 5 p.m. July 29 and 4:30 p.m.

MORRIS – One of the largest crowds in the 12-year history of the annual Price-less Days lined up to “shop” Tuesday at First Christian Church.

Rodney Springer of Morris and his wife were two of at least 350 people waiting in line, but were among the first five people through the doors when they opened at 5 p.m. It is the third consecutive year Springer has attended.

“We were in line at about 1:30 p.m.,” Springer said.

Although temperatures were in the 80s Tuesday afternoon, Springer said he and others who arrived first were able to wait in the shade.

Springer and his wife attended to look for odds and ends.

Springer, who enjoys thriftlike events, said if he gets in early, he can get the first pick at a particular table. But if he leaves the table, he might miss out on something.

“You can’t be in two places at once,” Springer said.

First Christian Church Minister Scott Zorn estimated more than 500 people attended the free shopping between 5 and 8 p.m. Church volunteers stopped counting at 350 because it was enough to fill the building. As people left, more were admitted in. Some made multiple trips to the car to drop off goods.

All items shoppers picked up were free because they were donated throughout the year. Among the items up for grabs were clothes for all ages and sizes, office supplies, toys, pet goods, housewares and sports equipment.

Seth Severson, of Dwight, said he found some nice clothes for college. He’ll be attending Bob Jones University in South Carolina. After his clothes search, Severson looked over the electronics table for a power cord.

Price-less Days Co-Director Tanya Keech said those affected received individual attention from volunteers to help fill their needs.

“Some people were really looking for the bare necessities, like bed sheets and school clothes,” Keech said.

One family presented a picture to Keech of their home, which was reduced to nothing.

They had to get tetanus shots because when they evacuated the home they didn’t have shoes.

“It was overwhelming,” Keech said. “Some of them really lost everything.”

Zorn said First Christian Church wants to help people in need, and he’s always amazed at the polite confusion that emerges when shoppers enter the church.

“No one pushes or shoves,” Zorn said. “And this year is most special because we were able to help replenish after the tornado.”

Saratoga will expand bus parking lot

MORRIS – Stopping already-approved improvement projects and high costs for a bus parking expansion were two hot topics Monday at the Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C Board meeting.

The board accepted a bid to begin construction of a 45,000-square-foot asphalt parking lot to create more bus parking.

Saratoga Superintendent Kathy Perry said Saratoga, Morris Elementary District 54 and Morris Community High School have entered an agreement to share transportation services.

This means the buses used to transport the children in these districts are owned and operated by Saratoga, and are housed on the district’s property.

Perry brought the need for the expansion to the board

three times, only to have project bids arise over budget. She said she has been working with the city of Morris to piggyback its city construction project bids.

Perry came to the board Monday with a bid of $203,266, working through the city, with “D” Construction manning the construction projects. Financing for the project will be through a tax increment financing district (TIF).

“Back several years ago, the city of Morris and all school districts joined in a TIF intergovernmental agreement, and we can use revenue from the TIF district for capital projects,” Perry said.

The next lowest bid received was $217,580, she said.

“We need to bite the bullet and take the cheaper bid or keep the buses where they are.

It appears if we put this project off, it’s not going to get any cheaper,” Perry said.

Board member Mike Wright questioned the timing

of the project with the new school year approaching. Perry said the project will not begin until September and it will be an inconvenience, but a tolerable one.

“It’s better to spend the money today because we don’t see a huge increase in population coming and needing more room in the school building itself,” board member Tracy Lawyer said. “Plus, when there is an activity and people park in back or if we move the buses to the back, it’s a mess.”

Perry said the new bus parking will be an angled spot north and west of the current bus location, adding two rows of asphalt parking.

Also approved were a $10,000 resurfacing of the circle drive where the buses turn around and the repair of a curb in front of the school. Perry said the curb was redone three times with asphalt and it keeps crumbling. The bid aims to replace the high-traffic spot with a 6-inch concrete slab.

Members of the class recently completed high school, and many of them will be going away to college for the first time.

Guests will be treated to pizza and soft drinks.

They will have the opportunity

to visit and to view yearbooks, pictures and videos from their years at ICS. Each class member will receive a letter detailing the event.

Security software OK’d

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Elementary School District 54 board approved this week a software program it hopes will help educators keep students safe when visitors are at the school. School Gate Guardian, which would be purchased for no more than $5,500, is software that captures the name, address, date of birth and driver’s license or state ID number from any state-issued photo identification, as well as a photograph of the visitor, for badge purposes.

The system then compares the identity of the visitor to a national database of registered sex offenders, and if there is a positive match it will alert staff and give them more identifying information such as scars, marks or tattoos to ensure it is the same person. In addition to checking against sex offenders, the software will make sure the person picking up or visiting a child at school is on his or her approved list.

Board member Joannie Johnston said during Monday’s board meeting that she didn’t feel the purchase was warranted, given the financial state of the school. When the board discussed tabling the item, District Principal Chris Maier said he didn’t agree the purchase should be put off.

“My No. 1 priority is the safety of the students,” he said.

“We need to know those who are picking up the kids are supposed to.”

Maier said the district receives about one order of protection a week for students in the district, which prohibits someone from being near a specific child.

When asked if any child has ever been wrongfully released, Maier said there was one child released at Shabbona Middle School last year to someone not on the approved pick-up list.

After the meeting, Maier said while an unapproved family member picked up the student, there was no negative impact. Maier also said the district has had family members drop off items for children at White Oak School by estranged family members who are not allowed contact with the child.

Despite Johnston’s earlier objections, she changed her mind when it came up for a vote. The board voted, 6-0, to approve the purchase, with board member Patrick Stevens absent.

“One time is one time too many,” board member Sheryl Dzuryak said.

While several board members expressed sadness that software like School Gate Guardian is needed, they agreed it should be in place for the safety of the students.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – An attempt to revote on the medical marijuana dispensary coming to Morris failed at Monday’s Morris City Council meeting, .

Third Ward Alderman Don Matteson requested the council reconsider the July 6 vote regarding a conditional use permit granted to Greenhouse Group LLC to operate a medical marijuana dispensary at 2400 W. Route 6. Second Ward Alderman Doug Hayse tried to second the motion.

But because it was not on the meeting agenda, it could not be voted on, according to state municipal code. Matteson then requested the matter be added to the agenda for the Aug. 3 meeting, but Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said the required timeframe had passed.

A request to reconsider the vote would have had to be formally made before the next City Council meeting after the original vote, which was Monday, Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday.

Belt said Tuesday a motion to reconsider the vote taken on the permit cannot be considered again at a later meeting.

Matteson wanted a re-vote because he abstained July 6 because of a conflict of interest later determined to be invalid.

When he abstained, Matteson stated he had a conflict of interest, but did not specify what it was. The ordinance passed, 5-2, with the abstention and with Alderman Bill Martin absent. Kopczick was called on to vote, and voted “Yes,” becoming the fifth

“Yes” vote.

“Because of the failure to specify the conflict of interest, it was interpreted that the mayor was required to vote,” Belt said Tuesday.

But it was determined in a July 16 meeting between Belt and Matteson that none of the five circumstances required to justify a conflict of interest were met. Conflicts of interest are governed by Section 3.155-10 of the Illinois Municipal Code.

Matteson told the council Monday his conflict of interest is that marijuana is illegal fed-

erally, which does not fit one of the five justified circumstances, according to the state code.

He was reminded by Belt that state lawmakers already determined medical marijuana will be cultivated and sold in Illinois, and the vote before the City Council was simply regarding land usage.

Belt took the opportunity Monday to remind the council the ordeal can be a learning tool and public officials have an obligation to define the scope of their conflict of interest when abstaining.

8 Morris man arrested on arson charges

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris police have arrested an 18-year-old Morris man in relation to recent trash fires at local businesses.

Morris police investigated Sunday various incidents throughout the city, which were determined to be arson and criminal damage to property, according to a news release from Morris police.

On Tuesday, Austin J.

Stump, 18, of the 100 block of east North Street, was arrested and booked into the Grundy County Jail on two counts of arson, a Class 2 felony, according to the news release.

Dite said additional felony criminal damage to property charges are expected against Stump, in regards to broken windows at Morris Community High School, Grundy Area Vocational Center, and Shabbona Middle School, as well as property damage at the Morris pool.

damaged at the city pool, Dite said, and an American flag that had been set on fire was found at the entrance of the pool. The flag did not come from the pool property, Dite said.

Fires were reported Sunday in dumpsters and garbage receptacles at Animal Care Hospital, 1410 Liberty St.; Morris Hospital, 150 W. High St.; and Wash ’N Dry Laundry Services, 531 Bedford Road.

The two arson counts are for the incidents at the animal hospital and the laundromat, according to court documents.

Family and friends were important to Martha as she hosted memorable meals in Morris. She very much liked entertaining and playing board games with her many friends in Morris. When she had to move to Davenport, Iowa she missed many special friendships she had established over the years. Martha enjoyed her God-given life to the fullest. She made the most of each and every day. She took nothing for granted.

Martha would say that she wanted to be remembered as a hard worker which all can agree is her legacy.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Holly in Elmhurst; son, Reinhold (Kathy) in Joliet; daughter-in-law, Arlene (Jim) in Morris and California; son, Manfred (Sandra) in Bettendorf, IA; as well as granddaughter, Kiesten (Russell) in Melbourne, Australia; granddaughter, Monica (Jim) in Morris; grandson, Nathan (Kelly) in Devils Lake, ND; grandson, Gerek in Arlington, TX; great grandchildren, Doug and Stephanie in Morris and Zachery in Melbourne.

Paul Flatau Smith, age 74, of Heber Springs, Arkansas (formerly of Dwight, IL) passed away on June 30, 2015, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Born May 18, 1941, in Copenhagen, Denmark, he was the son of the late Aage Hans Christian Schmidt and Emma Louisa Carla Flatau Peterson.

Paul came to America by boat, with his parents and sister when he was 11 years old. After High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy as 3rd class Bosenmante aboard the U.S.S. San Pablo. He married Patricia Burkhart in 1966 and they were happily married for 49 years. They raised 3 children and were blessed with 7 grandchildren.

Paul was the owner of the Lake and River Inn in Heber Springs, AR for the past 26 years. They loved to play cards and games, and travel with family and friends, including several RV Campouts with the SugarLoaf Sams Club, which he eventually served as assistant state director of Arkansas. Paul was always involved in his community including the Countryside Men’s Club, the Danish Brotherhood of Dwight, founder of the Heber Springs A&P commission, skipper for the U.S.S. San Pablo yearly reunions, and a proud American Legion member.

Paul was known to always help people. He enjoyed carpentry work and was known as a jack of all trades. He renovated several local businesses and homes, making many friends along the way. He pro-

Stage and film star Theodore Bikel dies in LA at 91

By MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Theodore Bikel, the Tony- and Oscar-nominated actor and singer whose passions included folk music and political activism, died Tuesday morning of natural causes at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, said his agent Robert Malcolm. He was 91.

The Austrian-born Bikel was noted for the diversity of the roles he played, from a Scottish police officer to a Rus-

sian submarine skipper, Jewish refugee, Dutch sea captain and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. He sang in 21 languages.

“No one loved theater more, his union better or cherished actors like Theo did. He has left an indelible mark on generation of members past and generations of members to come,” Actors’ Equity Association, which Bikel led as president from 1973-1982, said in a statement.

He also appeared on numerous television shows, record-

ed books on tape, appeared in opera productions and issued more than 20 contemporary and folk music albums.

He received an Oscar nomination for his 1958 portrayal of a Southern sheriff in “The Defiant Ones,” the acclaimed drama about two prison escapees, one black and one white.

The following year, Bikel starred on Broadway as Capt.

Georg von Trapp in the original 1959 production of “The Sound of Music.”

But many viewers knew him best for his portrayal of

Tevye in stage productions of “Fiddler on the Roof.” Although he did not appear in the original 1964 Broadway version or the 1971 film, he played Tevye more than 2,000 times on stage from 1967 onward.

His latest film was a documentary about interpreting the work of Yiddish author and playwright Sholem Aleichem, who wrote “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Among his film roles, he played the grumpy Soviet submarine captain in the Os-

car-nominated 1966 Cold War comedy “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.” He played Kissinger in the TV movie “The Final Days.”

A prolific recording artist, Bikel also helped found the Newport Folk Festival in 1959, an event that has drawn hundreds of thousands of fans to Rhode Island over the decades and launched the careers of many notable musicians. He recorded 37 albums and sang with Pete Seeger and The Weavers.

Channahon adjusts for two events on same day

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon Police Department received a surprise this month when someone mentioned to the chief the village’s two largest events of the year will take place on the same day.

The department has known since last year that Three Rivers Festival – the village’s big community bash featuring bands, carnival rides, food vendors, a parade and fundraising events – will be held Aug. 12 to 16.

However, the popular international race and obstacle course known as Warrior Dash also will be Aug. 15.

This information was just dropped on the department, according to Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold.

The date for the dash is actually a makeup day: The dash was planned in June, but storms forced it to be rained out.

“We had to evacuate the participants,” Wold said.

“Dollinger Farm was just soaked.”

The dash, which normally caters to about 15,000 racers on its biggest day in Channahon, is held at Dollinger Family Farm on Hansel Road.

Three Rivers Festival is held at Channahon Park District’s Central Park and sees about 5,000 visitors on its Saturday date.

There is an almost 5-mile separation between the two venues, but the traffic in town is a concern, as is having enough police officers to man both events.

“We’re working out the details,” Wold told trustees at Monday’s Village Board meeting. “It won’t be easy, but we can do it. It’s in our best interest to do it.”

Wold said he normally schedules nine officers for the Warrior Dash – eight to work the venue and do traffic control at Ridge Road at Route 6 and one extra officer for relief.

This year, he said he would probably schedule one Channahon officer for the dash and may ask for assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies to cover the additional needs.

Officers working the dash likely will be paid by Red Frog, and the contract with the organizer and the village is expected to be ready for trustees at the Aug. 3 meeting.

Wold said he is planning to keep his Channahon officers and Channahon Police Cadet volunteers at the Three Rivers Festival.

He has scheduled 12 off-duty officers for the Friday and Saturday of the festival.

The usual numbers of officers will remain on duty with their regular assignments throughout the village.

Red Frog is considering relieving traffic congestion by busing Warrior Dash participants in from a remote location, Wold said, but that could negate the dollars brought into the community when racers visit local businesses such as restaurants.

Three Rivers Festival co-chairman Mike Rittof said he’s looking at the extra visitors as a boon.

Rittof said the dash racers may see the carnival rides as they drive by and decide to attend the festival on the way out of town.

“Any increase in revenue is going to help the community,” he said.

The primary beneficiaries of Three Rivers Festival are the Chanooka Braves, the Channahon Baseball League, Channahon Lions Club and the Channahon Fire Protection District’s volunteers, in addition to the other nonprofit organizations.

Alternatives to prison needed

SPRINGFIELD – “Ma’am I’ve got some good news for you. Your grandson is being released from prison.”

I made that phone call about 15 years ago after covering a session of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board and watching the board members vote to release a long-serving inmate.

The elated grandmother dropped the phone receiver and screamed, “Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!”

I could hear her feet thumping and relatives hollering with joy.

Cheers roared across the phone line.

And then there was silence.

The grandmother came back on the phone and whispered, “Which one of my grandsons is getting out?”

Our society has created a culture of incarceration that permeates impoverished neighborhoods throughout Illinois and the country.

No nation incarcerates more people, or a higher percentage of its citizenry, than the United States of America.

Not China. Not Russia. Not Iran.

The Land of the Free has become the Home of the Incarcerated.

Growing up on a farm in Galesburg, I would look out my bedroom window at night and see the eerie glow of prison lights just down the road.

I wondered why folks there were locked up.

They seemed to come from a world different than my own.

Many were there for drug crimes and other nonviolent offenses.

When it comes to drugs, wealthy and middle-class

Middle class people have “youthful indiscretions” while those from poor families have felonies.

It’s part of that pernicious concoction of race, class and hopelessness that perverts our justice system.

The Brookings Institute found blacks are far more likely to be arrested for selling or possessing drugs than whites, even though whites use drugs at the same rate.

And whites are actually more likely to sell drugs.

This mass incarceration for nonviolent offenses doesn’t serve our society well.

It perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

The Illinois Department of Corrections reports that 62 percent of inmates are parents.

Seldom is a family better off with a nonviolent mom or dad is behind bars.

Alternatives to prison must be deployed.

Prisons are taking a devastating toll on our state’s inner cities and escalating the financial burden on taxpayers who are forced to support a system that breeds poverty and destroys families.

Income gap needs dual focus One pressing national issue that presidential candidates in both parties agree on is the growing income inequality. The challenge is finding agreement on what the president or the federal government should do about it.

Candidates retreat to predictable camps: Democrats calling for taxing the rich and spending the proceeds on social programs, and Republicans pointing to federal regulations that stifle job growth. The conversation usually ends there. Presidential candidates have a 30,000-foot perspective of the issue, however, while economic inequality must be addressed at ground zero in every community. The president and Congress have a role to play, but it should be a supportive role, giving communities incentives and targeted resources.

The need for local action is clear from the recent work of Harvard Professor Robert Putnam. Putnam, known for his 2000 book, “Bowling Alone” about America’s unraveling social fabric, now is

trying to engage presidential aspirants in both parties on what he calls the “opportunity gap.”

Putnam cites research that points to a growing and solidifying divide: Children at the top have the greatest opportunity, thanks to two nurturing parents who guide them toward advanced education; children at the bottom face staggering obstacles to success. America has become a “hereditary aristocracy,” he said, not seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s.

Putnam is making the rounds in early presidential caucus and primary states in the hope of getting candidates to focus on closing that gap. Restoring a shared concern and expanding opportunity includes education from early childhood through high school and beyond.

Iowa has taken steps in that direction with investments in preschool, elementary and secondary education. Iowa’s community colleges offer a path to opportunity, but they have increasingly focused on making sure students finish

their education. Des Moines Area Community College, for example, requires every student to take a class on how to navigate the college system, and it has hired more advisers and navigators to keep students “stay on the rails,” as DMACC President Rob Denson puts it.

Community leaders in Iowa understand the need to target resources at those most vulnerable to falling through the cracks. The United Way of Central Iowa, for example, retooled its giving program in 2009 to measure how well its dollars are spent on three key goals: raising graduation rates, increasing the number of financially self-sufficient families and improving health.

The Iowa caucuses are an opportunity to address what the federal government can do to help all communities overcome the opportunity gap. The next president won’t close the income and opportunity gaps, but he or she can use the bully pulpit to lead the nation in directing resources toward the issue.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Coal City’s Verdun enjoys time as a pro

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Softball has always been a big part of Kirsten Verdun’s life.

When she attended Coal City High School, she led the Coalers to a third-place finish in Class 2A as a junior in 2009 and followed up with an undefeated season and state title in 2010.

In that year, she set an IHSA record for most pitching wins in a softball season (40) that still stands.

After her career at Coal City, she continued at DePaul University, where she wrote her name all over the record books.

She finished her four-year career with the Blue Demons ranking second in career wins (105), innings pitched (9242⁄3) and strikeouts (954).

She is first in games started (145) and fourth in saves (nine).

She’s more than just a pitcher, as she finished her career at DePaul with a .347 batting average and is second on the all-time home run list with 37.

When her career at DePaul was coming to an end, she figured it was the last year she woud be playing the game she loved.

Then something unexpected happened.

A DePaul assistant coach, Tammy Williams, also was playing professional softball for the Chicago Bandits.

Williams convinced Verdun to come to the Bandits’ open tryout before the 2014 season.

“I hadn’t thought about playing professionally at all,” Verduns said before the Bandits’ exhibition game against the Joliet Slammers at Silver Cross Field on Monday. “But our starting shortstop, Tammy Williams, was an assistant at DePaul. She told me the Bandits were having a tryout and she told the coaches that they should take a look at me. I tried out and made the team.

“It has been a lot of fun.

We always joke that we would rather play softball than go out and get a real job.”

She is a graduate assistant coach at University of Louisville, where she is completing her master’s degree in interpersonal communications.

“I would like to be a coach someday,” she said. “I think I would have a lot to offer, since I hit and pitch.”

During her first year with the Bandits, she went 1-0 with one save and 13 strikeouts.

This year she is 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA, helping the Bandits to a 22-10 record, landing them second place in the National Pro Fastpitch League behind the USSSA Pride.

Her versatility continues to shine because she sees time as the Bandits’ designated hitter. She is batting .167 with a double and five RBIs. In the 1-0 exhibition win over the Slammers, she had two of the Bandits’ four hits.

“I love to hit,” she said when asked about her preference. “It’s a lot different pitching against the pro teams. In college, you really only had to worry about the 1 to 5 hitters on most teams. Now, with only five teams in the pro league, almost every player, 1 to 9 in the lineup, were the No. 3 or 4 hitters on their college teams.

You definitely have to pitch to contact. The days of getting double-digit strikeouts in a game are over.

“When I hit, I think I have a little bit of an advantage because I can think along with the pitcher. Of course, you don’t want to think too much when you are hitting or you can get all screwed up. ‘Stew’ [Bandits coach Mike Steuerwald] says that I am anomaly because I do both. Usually when you get to this level, players have specialized.”

Before the exhibition game Monday, the Bandits spent time with a multitude of local youth softball teams that had held fundraisers to earn their way on the field. Verdun spent most of her time with the Dwight Rebels.

“I have known the Kodat family from Dwight for a long time,” she said. “I gave some of their daughters lessons. It’s fun to be out here with the young players, and it was nice to be here since it is so close to home. I have a few people come up to The ballpark in Rosemont [the Bandits’ home field] once in a while.

“My parents live in Coal City, but during the season I live in Rosemont. When school starts, I will be back in Louisville. We like playing against the guys. It’s fun watching them try to throw the bigger ball, and when they are on base, they think they can lead off. But they are athletes and competitors and they catch on.

Hopefully it’s too late by the time they do, though.”

When you are a bridge defender, you hope to get declarer under your control. Then you will probably be able to defeat the contract.

Sometimes, it must be admitted, it will be more important to get partner under control, either by signaling clearly or by getting on play to make the lethal lead.

Which applies in today’s deal?

South is in three no-trump, and West leads the club jack.

North, knowing of a combined 2528 points, was right to raise to three no-trump.

West’s opening lead marks South with the club queen. So, if East takes the first trick with his club ace and returns the suit, declarer will take at least nine tricks: one club, six diamonds and two spades. If South needs the spade finesse, East knows it will succeed.

The defenders must win the first five tricks. And the only way to do that is with one club and four hearts. But to which heart should East shift at trick two?

If East leads a low heart and South plays low, the contract makes. Instead, East should switch to his heart jack.

This is called a surrounding play because East has dummy’s top heart, the 10, surrounded by his jack and nine, and he has another, higher, nontouching heart honor in the king.

Then South has no answer; he must lose those five tricks.

Woman with Type 2 diabetes can achieve healthy pregnancy Dear Dr.K: I have Type 2 diabetes, and I would like to get pregnant. What can I do to increase my chances of having a healthy baby?

Dear Reader: Like you, some women already have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes before they become pregnant.

There also is a kind of temporary diabetes that develops during pregnancy called gestational diabetes. It goes away after the baby is born.

You’re right to be concerned. Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes all cause high blood sugar and can cause pregnancy complications. But for this column, I’ll focus on pregnancy and Type 2 diabetes.

Consistently high-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff er-than-normal blood sugar during pregnancy puts your baby’s health at risk. It increases the chances of having a miscarriage or going into premature labor. It may also cause your growing baby’s organs to form abnormally.

Women with diabetes are also more likely to have large babies. This can make delivery difficult, and cesarean sections more likely.

So, keeping blood sugar under control early in pregnancy is crucial to your baby’s health. In fact, it is also

important to achieve good blood sugar control before you become pregnant. That means keeping your HbA1c levels less than 7 percent. (HbA1c levels indicate your average blood sugar over the past three months.)

Many women with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. Try to lose weight by eating fewer calories and exercising regularly if you are trying to become pregnant.

This should help reduce your blood sugar levels before and even during the pregnancy.

If lifestyle changes aren’t enough to drop or keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range, you may need to begin medication. If you’re already taking a medicine, you may

need to increase the dose or switch the kind.

Unfortunately, studies have not yet shown whether it is safe to take oral diabetes medications during pregnancy.

Your doctor may recommend two pills that appear to be safe: metformin or acarbose. Alternatively, doctors often recommend starting or switching to insulin. This is an injectable hormone that lowers blood sugar.

Your diet during pregnancy is different from your diet before pregnancy because you’re eating for two. That means taking in enough calories for the two of you, and also eating the types of food that are healthiest for both you and the baby.

For that reason, you will

likely work with a dietitian during your pregnancy.

He or she will adjust your diet to ensure that your baby receives proper nutrition, but that you do not consume too many calories. Finally, you will have more frequent HbA1c tests during pregnancy. And you will have more frequent ultrasound tests to monitor your baby’s growth and development.

With good prenatal care and by keeping your blood sugar under control, you can look forward to a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.
