Morris police investigating fires and broken windows

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Police responded to three trash fires started this weekend, as well as reports of windows broken at area schools.

“It’s possible [the incidents] are related. As typical when doing investigations like this, we investigate individually, however, we have to look at them collectively,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Monday.

Morris police were dispatched about 4 a.m. Sunday

to a fire in a Dumpster at Animal Care Hospital, 1410 Liberty St. Dite said the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was called to put out the fire.

Shortly after, police were called to a garbage can fire in the parking lot of Morris Hospital’s emergency room. A hospital employee was able to put out the fire, Dite said.

A third fire was reported in a Dumpster at the Wash N’ Dry Laundry Services, 531 Bedford Road. Officers attempted to put this fire out, Dite said, but the fire department had to be called. Some fencing at the es-

by Morris native and Train guitarist Jimmy Stafford. When

the Grammy Award-winner returned to MCHS as the keynote speaker at 2015 Honors Night Program, he signed one.

• Matthew S. Clower, 34, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on July 16 on a warrant charge of contempt of court.

• Jodi L. Hansen, 49, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies July 16 on a DuPage County warrant. She was given an Aug. 19 court date.

• Dean A. Floyd, 51, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Friday on a charge of domestic battery.

• Stephen D. Mattews, 24, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence.

A call was made to Shabbona School first, Dite said, and then officers went to the high school and GAVC, where additional broken windows were found. Also at the high school, portable toilets were found knocked over, Dite said.

Coal City Veterans of Foreign Wars celebrating 90 years of service, honor

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Charlie Brown, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars St. Juvin Post 1336, wasn’t aware for 38 years after he left the Navy that he was eligible to join the fraternal veteran organization.

Unlike some veterans’ organizations, the Veterans of Foreign Wars have a strict eligibility requirement.

You’re eligible to join if you received a campaign medal for overseas service, served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea or have received hostile fire or imminent danger pay.

“I typed in the name of the ship I served on and found out that I was eligible for a medal that allowed me to join,” Brown said. “I always assumed it was just combat vets.”

On March 21, 1925, the St. Juvin Post was created with 26 founding veterans from the Coal City area.

VFW posts typically are named for a service member, the town they are located or the battle where founding members served, Brown said. The Coal City post is no different.

State Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, presents St. Juvin Post Commander Charlie Brown with a resolution Friday that recognized 90 years of service to veterans in Coal City.

Between the small French villages of St. Georges and St. Juvin, which sit just a few miles apart in the Meuse-Ar-

gonne region, was a road that served as a front line for a short time in World War I. According to the U.S. Army

history website, on Oct. 11, 1918, the ridge southeast of St. Juvin had been consolidated and the town was transferred

to the zone of action of the 77th Division.

City awards bids for street maintenance program

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris awarded bids Monday night for its annual street maintenance program.

The City Council voted 7-0 to award a bid of $732,449.49 to “D” Construction of Coal City for the city’s annual street maintenance. Of that, the city of Morris portion will be $491,382.54 with the cost split – 70 percent out of the tax increment financing district and 30 percent out of the general fund.

The remainder is work for other organizations, such as Morris Community High

School and churches, among others.

“We get a better price when we buy in bulk,” Alderman Don Hansen said.

The City Council also voted 7-0 to approve a $348,148.33 bid from “D” Construction that will come out of the motor fuel tax fund. The estimated cost was $354,000, Morris city engineer Guy Christensen said.

The council then voted 7-0 to award a bid of $69,595.91 to AC Pavement Striping, nearly $8,000 less than estimated, for restriping and sealing services across the city.

Christensen said this year’s restriping plan is more extensive than past years, and

that Illinois Avenue and Gore Road will see improvements.

An estimated $19,000 of work will be done at schools and churches, and will be paid for by each entity.

All projects are expected to be completed by Sept. 19, before the start of the Grundy County Corn Festival, Christensen said.

In the Judiciary and License Committee meeting, a business license was granted to Pamela Szepelak, doing business as Jakin’s & Such Pretties – a retail home décor business – at 106 W. Washington St., as well as to Vera Boyd, of Spiritual Healing, 107 W. Benton Street to operate

a business offering spiritual healing, religious oils, candles, incense and Bibles.

In other business, Frank Cortina of Cortina, Mueller & Frobish PC, presented to the Street and Alley Committee his renovation plans for the building he owns with Joe Mueller at the corner of Washington and Wauponsee streets.

Cortina requested to enclose the Wauponsee Street entryway of the building, which includes a handicap ramp.

The committee positively recommended the easement, which would be worked out

by Cortina and the Morris

City Attorney’s Office.

The interior of the building has been renovated and the architect has presented plans to the Morris Downtown Development Partnership. The building will feature cut chunks of limestone.

Cortina said the general contractor of the project is finishing plans and the goal is to complete the renovations by winter.

“We want to make it one of the better-looking buildings in town,” Cortina said.

Junk in the Trunk sale benefits local charities

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – With a determination to support the community, two Morris residents Sunday raised more than $500 for the American Cancer Society at the Junk in the Trunk seasonal flea market.

Co-founders Carol Posey and Ken Willis brainstormed the idea of a local flea market where people could come and sell their wares, and others could shop in one convenient location, all while raising funds for local charities.

“We want you to know that you are not forgotten,” Cloonen said to members present at the Coal City Library to receive the recognition. “Ninety years is a long time, and it should be celebrated.”

Anthony said knowing everything St. Juvin Post does in the community, he jumped on board as a sponsor of the measure. Especially in light of what happened last week in Chattanooga, with the killing of five service members, Anthony said it’s important that current and past service members are shown support.

Army, also is a member of the post. He feels all men and women who serve and served in the military, whether during peace time or in war, should be honored.

He is involved with the veterans memorial in Coal City, once called the Coal City War Memorial, which holds the names of all men and women who have served who are from Coal City or have lived in Coal City for at least five years.

“If you served from Coal City District 1 or have lived here for five years, your name belongs on the memorial,” Micetich said.

The memorial now has more than 200 engraved names of veterans who served outside of the dates of war.

Schafer had old military ammunition boxes for $15 each, which Posey was interested in for her own personal ammunition storage.

the two haggled back and forth over a $5 difference in opinion, and just when the sale seemed doomed, a fair price was reached and the two parted ways happy.

The mixture of the new and the old vendors keeps this market flourishing, according to Posey.

“We have a handful of people who come out every time, without fail, and then we have this constant rotation of new people, meaning shoppers have a variety every time,” she said.

Willis and Posey aim to have JITT a safe and unique environment both for the vendors and shoppers, by keeping strict rules. The two offer a copy via email and hard copy at the event, so the rules are clear.

“We have a list of what is allowed to be sold at JITT. I know that if good vendors show up to a flea market and they see clothes and shoes hanging from the booths, or tables of mass produced items, they will turn around and leave. They don’t want to waste time with a market like that,” Willis said.

“I want to keep it interesting to the everyday customer.”

“When they go to competitions, I want people to say, ‘Crap, Morris is here,’ ” Buck said.

It’s not the first time the guitars, which consist of Taylor Guitars’ designs and supplies, have gone to help a local cause.

Several of the guitars were auctioned off in April to benefit We Care of Grundy County, and several more remain, Smith said. The original plan was to auction the guitars to benefit the Industrial Tech program, he said.

“It kind of took on a life of its own,” Smith said. “We put some announcements out at school, and it grew.”

Founder of North American bird sanctuary dies

By JIM SUHR The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Walter “Stormy” Crawford Jr., whose founding of one of North America’s largest bird conservation and rehabilitation centers was fueled by a childhood spent in Venezuela fascinated by exotic jungle birds, has died in Missouri.

He was 70.

Crawford, executive director of the World Bird Sanctuary in suburban St. Louis, died at a hospital Friday after complications from a recent hip surgery, said Jeff Meshach, the sanctuary’s director. The sanctuary – spanning about 300 acres of hardwood forest – has rehabilitated and returned more than 800 raptors to the wild since Crawford founded it in the late 1970s.

“With his passing, it’s unbelievable how many emails we get, phone calls, people showing up here. Everybody is in shock,” Meshach told The Associated Press on Monday.

“As overwhelming as it might be, it’s just humbling and a good experience to know how many he touched around the country and world.”

Crawford – with support from legendary St. Louis Zoo director Marlin Perkins, the famed host of television’s “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” – founded in 1977 the Raptor Rehabilitation and Propagation Project. The site eventually became the World Bird Sanctuary next to St. Louis County’s Lone Elk Park, and Crawford left the zoo in 1982 to run the nonprofit sanctuary

fulltime.

The sanctuary’s hundreds of rehabilitated birds have included peregrine falcons, bald eagles and the American common barn owl, one of the most endangered raptors native to Missouri.

The sanctuary takes in injured or sick birds – often brought in by federal wildlife or customs agents – and nurses them back to health.

Those that cannot be returned to the wild are used in breeding or educational programs.

“Walter was a much-loved and respected public figure – acknowledged for his pioneering work in the field of raptor conservation and preservation,” John Kemper, the World Bird Sanctuary’s board president, said in a statement.

Kemper said the board, the sanctuary’s full-time staff of 16, and dozens of volunteers “are committed to continuing Walter’s legacy as one of the most innovative raptor centers in the world, and look forward to sharing this vision with our supporters in the next few weeks.”

A funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Italian ‘King of Jeans’ Fiorucci dies at age 80 The ASSOCIATED PRESS MILAN – Elio Fiorucci, founder of the Fiorucci brand that pioneered stretch jeans and exemplified the youthful, graphic ethos of the 1970s and 1980s, has died at age 80.

The news agency ANSA reported Monday that Fiorucci died of a sudden illness at his Milan home.

No one responded to calls at Fiorucci’s headquarters.

Fiorucci opened its first shop in Milan in 1967 with novelties from London’s Carnaby Street, expanding into a lifestyle brand and adopting the famed two angel logo a few years later.

The brand was linked with some of the biggest pop cultural moments of the 1970s and 1980s The Fiorucci team organized the grand opening of Studio 54 in 1977.

Keith Haring decorated the Milan flagship store in 1984.

In 2001, Fiorucci gave up his creative role.

STAFF REPORTS As lightning filled the sky, sparks began to fly Friday night when the Stars and Cars of the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment joined the best of the Chicagoland drivers. Eddie Hoffman took the checkered flag for his third Wayne Carter Classic victory.

Over the years, it almost is customary for the Midwest Tour races at Grundy County Speedway to be on the hottest day of the year. This year was no exception. Despite temperatures in the high 90s, heat index in the 100s, thick and heavy air and the threat of stormy weather, the show went on.

Touring stars Andrew Morrissey and James Swan led the 24-car field to the green flag of the 100-lap feature. Morrissey snagged the early lead as the rest the drivers tried to find their place. The first caution came out on lap one when Skylar Holzhausen spun in turn three. Rich Bickle also was involved, and the two took their restarting positions at the back of the field.

Morrissey once again took the lead as Jonathan Eilen fell in line in the second spot, but James Swan quickly took the spot back away from Eilen. Eilen got stuck on the outside as Austin Nason, Cardell Potter and Chris Weinkauf all passed him.

As a few more quick cautions fell, Morrissey became an expert on restarts in the hopes of a longer run to extend his lead. Last year’s Wayne Carter Classic winner, touring star Chris Weinkauf, also looked racy and was up to the fourth spot.

As the green flag dropped once again, Weinkauf made his way into third and quickly took second away from Swan.

With his sights set on Morrissey, he closed the gap and was pressuring him for the lead on Lap 15.

A few laps later, touring star Austin Nason was in the wall. Weinkauf started on the outside of Morrissey on the re-

start and was able to take the lead and gained a small lead.

Meanwhile, eventual winner Eddie Hoffman ran the high line most of the night and powered his way into third.

Chris Weinkauf couldn’t keep up, eventually slowing in turn four before heading to the pits.

As lightning started to surround the track, Morrissey once again assumed the lead, but it didn’t take Hoffman long before he took the top spot away and started to pull away from the rest of the field. Morrissey started to drift back, coming home in 10th.

While the action was taking place up front, one driver was powering his way through the field almost unnoticed. Skylar Holzhausen, who spun on lap one, and was three laps down at one point, was moving into the top five.

With the series of cautions early on, Holzhausen recovered his laps, eventually sneaking back into the lead lap. Holzhausen moved into second and was starting to catch up to the leader, but didn’t have enough time.

The 2013 winner of the event, Eilen, also had a strong run, holding his own in the top five most of the night and came home in third.

Tom Knippenberg took the Mid-American feature and also had the fast time. Kevin Gentile finished second, followed by Matt Clemens, Jeremy Spoonmore and Joe Vinachi.

In four-cylinder action, Zach Sontag was the feature winner, with Jom Gross, Kyle Royster, Chris Mihalski and Alex Gay nabbing the rest of the top-five spots.

OPINION The times sure have changed for Illinois Democrats House Speaker Michael Madigan told reporters earlier this month that he’d had a “frank discussion” with Gov. Bruce Rauner, “and I gave him good, solid advice.”

Word is, that advice had two parts.

First, the governor needs to find a way to get himself out of this long overtime session, no state budget mess. Second, if the governor thinks he can get himself out of this mess by somehow breaking the speaker’s will, he’s mistaken.

But the governor isn’t giving up. In fact, he has doubled down. Rauner has made it clear there will be no budget talks until the Democrats give in on his “Turnaround Agenda,” including his anti-union demands.

Several days after receiving Madigan’s “advice,” the governor started sending some negative direct mail pieces into some Democratic-controlled legislative districts.

The mailer features an ominous photo of Madigan above and behind a picture of a smiling state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, who won her race by 3 percentage points last year.

“Chicago political boss Mike Madigan wants your Rep. Michelle Mussman to kill the reforms you voted for,” claims the mailer, which displays her district office number and asks recipients to “Call Michelle Mussman now and tell her to side with taxpayers, not with Mike Madigan’s Chicago political machine.”

“Michelle Mussman should work for you, not Mike Madigan,” claims the other side of the mailer. “Tell Madigan & Mussman: No property tax hikes!” the mailer exhorts.

“Illinoisans already pay the second highest property taxes in the country, but Mike Madigan wants to use his powerful political machine and

Michelle Mussman to help him block Governor Rauner’s tax freeze reforms which benefit Illinois’ working families,” the somewhat wordy mailer claims, without, of course, noting Rauner also wants to essentially eliminate collective bargaining rights for many heads of “working families” in that reform.

“Tell Madigan & Mussman you demand term limits!” the mailer continues. “Political puppetmaster Mike Madigan has blocked reform for 44 years, protecting the status quo that put him in power.

Illinois needs Michelle Mussman to stand up to Madigan to break the cycle of corruption and restore the integrity to the legislature by supporting term limits.”

“Call Michelle Mussman Right Now” the mailer commands, displaying her phone number in large letters at the bottom of the page. The goal here is probably twofold.

First, put so much heat on Madigan’s members they beg him to cut a deal with Rauner.

I don’t see that happening as long as the governor sticks by his anti-union demands.

Madigan isn’t going to abandon the literal backbone of the Democratic Party because a few members are skittish. The second part is likely to soften these members up for next year’s campaign, when they’ll be attacked again with the same sort of message.

That may work, but pretty much all political science studies have shown that when ad campaigns end, they tend to lose almost all of their punch.

If nothing else, the mailers are a stark reminder Rauner has a huge financial advantage over the Democrats.

Madigan’s three campaign committees reported raising a grand total of $618,000 in the second quarter, according to filings with the State Board of Elections. Madigan’s committees had $1.99 million sitting in the bank at the end of June 30, according to the filings.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton’s two committees raised $592,000 and had just shy of $1.3 million on hand at the end of the quarter.

That wouldn’t be bad at all for the second quarter of an off year, but Rauner’s main campaign fund was sitting on $19.7 million at the end of the quarter. Rauner’s Turnaround Illinois PAC had another $2.7 million. The governor also has a “dark money” fund, but we don’t know how much is in it.

Enjoy summer fun – safely This summer has been relatively mild for Chicago standards. July is half over, and we’ve had fewer than a handful of days with temperatures that reached or approached 90 degrees.

The weather heated up this past weekend, however. The National Weather Service forecasted temperatures to be at or around 90 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – and that’s what we got. It was humid, and heat index values reached between 100 degrees and 110 degrees.

We urge residents to take caution in the heat. What can you do?

First, avoid strenuous activities outdoors, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If you need to exercise,

do yard work, or some other outdoor activity, try to do it in the early morning or in the evening. Of course, stay in air conditioning as much as possible.

Also, drink plenty of water.

You need to keep your body hydrated all the time, but especially during extreme heat.

If you have children, make sure outdoor surfaces – car seats, picnic tables, playground equipment, etc. – aren’t too hot before kids come in contact with them.

Never leave your child or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows open. Check on older family members, friends and neighbors to make sure they’re coping OK. Enjoy the warm weather, but stay safe doing so.

This week, we are studying deals in which the defenders must exercise control to defeat the contract. Today, look at all 52 cards in the diagram.

South is in four diamonds. After West leads the spade queen, how can the contract be defeated?

West’s three-spade response indicated a weak hand with four-card support. (If he had held game-invitational values, he would have responded two no-trump, a bid not needed in a natural sense, because responder would have redoubled to indicate 10 points or more.)

North’s double was responsive, typically showing a decent hand with at least 4-4 in the minors. Yesterday, South settled for four clubs; today, he chose four diamonds.

South has only three top losers: two spades and one club. But the 4-1 trump split puts his contract in jeopardy. Let’s suppose that the defenders cash their two spade tricks, then shift to hearts. (Yes, playing a third round of spades is good defense.) Declarer wins and starts to draw trumps, but when he sees the bad break, he must stop and drive out the club ace. (If he pulls all of the trumps, the defenders can cash spade tricks when in with the club ace.)

Now East must show control. He must not take the first club trick. He must take the second and note that his partner has signaled high-low with his doubleton. Then East gives West a club ruff to defeat the contract.

Hospital worker violated law by reading husband’s records Dear Abby: “Concerned in Massachusetts” (Feb. 20) used her status as a hospital employee to access her husband’s medical records and found a history of STDs. I’m a registered nurse with 40 years’ experience.

Every healthcare organization I know of teaches all their employees about HIPAA violations and that accessing private patient medical information is a criminal offense. It is essential that patients know they can trust us to protect their privacy.

We have specific policies against using one’s employee status to access a relative’s medical information.

You are not the only reader who was appalled at what “Concerned” had done. Read on: Dear Abby: Like “Concerned’s” husband, I, too, am labeled as high risk for STDs based on a medical survey I completed, although I have had a monogamous 30-year marriage and do not do drugs of any kind.

In that survey, they asked how many partners I had in my lifetime. Those few other partners were before I met my wife.

“Concerned” indicated that her husband had been treated twice for STDs “some years back.” What does that mean?

Were they married then? If not, is he labeled high risk due to his previous behavior? Perhaps there is something deeper in the relationship that needs addressing – such as why there are weeks between sexual contact with her husband.

It’s ironic that she’s bent out of shape over infidelity concerns, but thinks it acceptable to betray the privacy and ethics rules governing medical professionals. – Vincent in West

Virginia Dear Abby: “Young at Heart in Texas” (Feb. 9) could have

written my story. I am also a 70-year-old man who is sexually dysfunctional. I, too, was lonely, having outlived two of my brides. However, I did find someone who appreciates holding hands and whispering sweet words without more physical contact.

Abby, you said: “Not only do I think you can (find companionship), I suspect you may need police protection to control the crowd of applicants.

Years ago, my aunt, the late Ann Landers, polled her female readers asking if they would prefer ‘holding and cuddling’ to actually doing ‘the deed.’ The majority of them answered in the affirmative.”

My first wife died of a heart attack after 30 years of marriage. My second wife died after eight years of marriage, of kidney cancer. At 71, I married my

third wife, a wonderful woman just as you both describe. She was my next-door neighbor. We have been married three years and nine months. (The Bible says, “Love thy neighbor,” so I married her!) We also enjoy cuddling, even without doing “the deed.”

So I say to “Young at Heart in Texas”: YES, you can find a woman such as you and Abby describe. And when you do, I suggest you rub her back often.
