SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – A 20-yearold Morris man was killed Wednesday morning when he was hit by a train in the city.

The incident occurred Wednesday shortly after 10 a.m., according to a news release from Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

Zachary Leo Johnston, 20, of Morris was walking west on the railroad tracks at the Liberty Street crossing when he was struck and killed by the train, according to the news release.

Juror pay, fees increase for civil litigation; jury sizes addressed

The Grundy County Board approved a resolution Tuesday night increasing the pay for grand and petit jurors from $15 to $25 for the first day, and $50 for each day following while serving on the jury.

A law that went into effect June 1 called for increased pay to jurors. The act also passes fees on to those filing civil cases in county courts, according to Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

for civil cases less than $50,000 a jury of six was used, and for cases more than $50,000 a jury of 12 is required. This act changes the number of jurors to six regardless of the amount being sought in the civil case.

He said the public act and county ordinance does not affect criminal trials.

“In a criminal case, they don’t pay a jury fee because it is their constitutional right to a jury trial,” Helland said.

He said criminal juries will remain at 12 jurors.

The fee for alternate jurors is not set by the public act; the county can set that fee.

New associate minister who began July 1 welcomed at Morris church

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – If you felt a breath of fresh air breeze into Morris recently, it might have been the First United Methodist Church’s new associate pastor.

Laura Wilson’s first day on the job was July 1, and the 27-year-old recent divinity school graduate brings a variety of experiences with her.

Wilson joins Senior Pastor Robert Sathuri, who was welcomed to the church about a year ago.

“Laura is a wonderful gift [whom] God has brought to Morris,” Sathuri said. “I’m excited about the person she is in Christ and the gifts that she brings.”

A Rockford native, Wilson felt a calling to minister to adults with mental illnesses when she spent a summer at the city’s Jubilee Center, a day program for homeless adults who have a chronic mental illness. It was an eye-opening

experience for her.

“A lot of what they needed was community,” she said.

“They were lonely. ... I really like working with people with mental illness. As Christians, I feel we’re missing out on the full extent of God if we’re not in touch with those who are different from us. People who don’t fit into society, they form a new kind of community, and I like being a part of that.”

Wilson got another opportunity to help those with mental health needs during a rotation at the Durham VA Medical Center during her years at Duke Divinity School in North Carolina.

Hospice was another rotation she did at the VA – an experience that was not easy, but one from which she said she learned a great deal.

“It was hard,” she said. “It was really hard on the nurses, too. Dying can be really awful, but it can be a really holy place, too. It gives you a chance Jeanne Millsap for Shaw Media

Republican committee again requests Hougas as alderman

MORRIS – The battle for a Morris 2nd Ward alderman seat continues. Grundy County Republican Central Committee Chairman Michael Mattingly has requested again, in a letter to the editor to the Morris Herald-News, that Mayor Richard Kopczick appoint Thomas Hougas to the seat.

Kopczick appointed on July 6 former Alderman Julian Houston, citing a state statute that allows him to make an appointment without council’s approval after two initial appointments are voted down.

The mayor then has the ability to appoint one of the two if he so chooses.

Kopczick tried to appoint Houston in June, and the council voted it down. He appointed Sid Nelson July 6 and was voted down again. He then appointed Houston, who was sworn in.

“The mayor followed the statute,” Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said. “This is not

county government. It’s governed by Illinois Municipal Code. Neither central committee, whether Democratic or Republican, has any input on the appointment. There is no requirement in the statute.”

Belt said there is no reference whatsoever in the state statute regarding an appointment from the same party.

But Mattingly said Wednesday he believes the statute suggests the mayor make appointments until council votes to approve one of them into the open seat.

In the letter, Mattingly stated Kopczick’s choice was discretionary, not required, and as an alternative, could have submitted one or more other nominations seeking approval by the council.

That’s where Hougas, who is the Republican Party’s recommendation for the position, comes in. When asked if the mayor disregarded the party’s input, Mattingly said he thinks Kopczick’s actions speak for themselves. Mattingly also said

the Republican Party is concerned it appears the mayor has not consulted with council prior to the appointments.

Alderman Doug Hayse said June 1, when the mayor first tried to appoint Houston, he wished he was made aware before the vote. Kopczick said Wednesday it’s surprising to him that Republicans on the City Council voted down two Republican appointments, in Houston and Nelson. Houston is set to serve out the remainder of former 2nd Ward Alderman’s Ken Sereno’s term, but Mattingly disagrees, saying the “temporary appointment” should end when the council votes to approve a candidate.

“I believe the mayor has an obligation to make nominations to City Council until one receives council’s consent,” he said.

Kopczick said he respects but disagrees with Mattingly’s opinion. He said nowhere in state statute does it say the mayor should continue appointing candidates for approval. In the

letter, Mattingly referenced the results of the February election between Houston and Hayse, when Hayse, a write-in candidate, defeated Houston with 62 percent of the vote.

“I think Houston is a good person. However, in an election he was soundly defeated,” Mattingly said. “I take it as, the 2nd Ward voters want change.

We’re not talking about a 51-49 defeat.”

Kopczick said a request by Mattingly and the Republican Party to appoint Hougas was submitted to the mayoral office again this week. Kopczick said he doesn’t understand the portion about Houston not being qualified for the position.

“Houston has already served as an alderman four years,” Kopczick said. “We’re talking about somebody [who] came to City Council meetings years before he ran for council.”

Mattingly said the Republican Committee asks that at least its recommendation of Hougas be presented to the

council for a vote.

“I don’t understand why the committee’s recommendation hasn’t been presented, on more than one occasion,” Mattingly said.

The county’s GOP originally recommended in May that David Valdivia be appointed.

Valdivia later removed his name from consideration.

Belt also pointed out that Hougas is chairman of the Grundy County Board of Review, and referenced the informal opinion of the Illinois Attorney General in 1995 in response to an inquiry from state Sen. Todd Sieben in regards to someone simultaneously holding the offices of city alderman and board of review.

Although not an official opinion of the attorney general, the Senior Assistant Attorney General Michael Duke commented that because a board of review has authority to revise assessments relating to municipal property, a conflict of duties can arise if the offices are held simultaneously.

MORRIS – The thought of cleaning up debris doesn’t appeal to most.

Then I remembered pieces of people’s lives were scattered across Coal City and surrounding municipalities and counties because of the 160 mph winds let loose in June 22’s EF3 tornado.

My mom and I volunteered Saturday in Coal City, cleaning up tornado debris.

A few months ago, I had never been to Coal City. Now, I’ve met people I never would have met.

Tornadoes and other natural disasters alter lives in many ways.

My mom and I were in a group of about 25 people who departed about 9:15 a.m.

Saturday from the Coal City High School parking lot after a briefing to be bused to Hunter’s Lane.

Upon arrival I noticed ComEd was still installing new power lines on its northsouth grid.

When we stepped off the bus, it was clear there was something for everyone to do.

With half our group, I started collecting shingles and putting them into garbage bags along a drainage creek that borders the subdivision.

The other half began clearing a thick tree line.

After filling several bags of shingles, I looked for something different to do. I began clearing as many dead branches and bushes as I could from a thick brush line along the creek and added to the pile.

In this digital age, I felt alive.

It wasn’t until two hours

into the cleanup that I noticed one property on Mallard Court was reduced to nothing but a cement foundation, an American Flag and old riding lawn mower.

I then examined the creek, which is anywhere from fourto eight-feet wide, and realized we were picking up pieces of at least one and a half homes from Mallard Court that were dropped in the creek and tree line.

Team Rubicon attached a chain to a Dodge Ram and pulled a large snow blower out of the creek. The wall of a shed was lodged in the muddy creek floor. Portions of walls and roofs were in the water, by this point so waterlogged

Team Rubicon sawed down damaged trees and other volunteers collected everything from compact discs to a refrigerator and washing machine.

A few weeks after the big news network vans, trucks and the governor left town, work in Coal City is nowhere near complete.

As Team Rubicon Incident Commander William Porter said to me recently, Coal City will need volunteer efforts of

varying kinds for one or two years.

If you are interested in helping the cleanup effort, but concerned about the type of work you can provide, don’t worry.

Team Rubicon leaders allow you to work at your own pace. You also can stop for a drink or snack whenever you want.

There are still many cases like the one along Hunter’s Lane. Even picking up the smallest of objects helps.

To help the city prioritize recovery efforts, the city is asking for residents to come to town hall meetings to work with city officials.

The meetings are this

week at 7 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at Diamond Banquet Hall.

With assistance from organizations that participated in the Multi-Agency Resource Center, the goal is to help the community band together and prioritize.

If you live north of the train tracks, the village asks that you attend Thursday.

Residents south of the tracks should attend Saturday afternoon, and those who cannot make either should attend Saturday morning.

Everyone is encouraged to come to the Morris Pool, located in Goold Park, to enjoy the recently reopened pool, which has been closed for cleaning and repairs, according to a news release from the Lions. Free swimming hours are noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Normal fees for Morris residents are $1 for children and $3 for adults.

The Morris Lions Club will cover the entrance fee for any Morris resident to enjoy a summer day at the city pool, according to the release.

Researches in the Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment Study, published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology,April 2009, randomly assigned 348 Jeffrey J. Blanco, O.D. people to it either surgery or eye drops for open angle glaucoma, which is the most common type of glaucoma. Five years later, 87% of the eyes had no change in the appearance of the optic nerve, 6% were judged worse, and 7% showed improvement.When comparing the surgery group to the eye drop group, surgery was not significantly different at preventing loss of vision function.

This study shows that both surgery and medication (eye drops) are effective for protecting visual function.

Deciding between the two treatments requires discussing all the risks and benefits of each treatment with your eye doctor. However, the vast majority of doctors will first treat glaucoma with drops and if that will not control the pressure, surgery is then pursued.

How do I get whiter teeth?

Most of us want that Hollywood white smile, or at least something whiter than what we have currently, but achieving those results can be difficult. Before discussing how to get teeth whiter, let’s start with what makes teeth darker. Smoking, red wine, dark soda, coffee, and tea are just some examples of substances that tend to stain teeth making them look darker. At the same time, certain medications can stain teeth as well. And the only way to remove those stains is by a dental professional cleaning. No amount of brushing will remove stain. Teeth that are stained will also not bleach well. There are different options for bleaching teeth. Any whitening toothpaste will give marginal results.The over the counter whitening strips work relatively well, but often do not stick well on the teeth. The most important factor in any whitening is how much hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is in the product.

The higher the percentage, the more teeth will bleach. But at the same time, the higher the percentage, the more likely that you will be sensitive. A dental professional typically has two methods of bleaching. The first way is through bleaching trays. Custom trays are fabricated that fit to your teeth and you are given strong bleach material to use in the trays. Typical results occur after two weeks.

The other method is in-office bleaching, where teeth are bleached in an hour. Patients go home with whiter teeth. Sensitivity is highest with the in-office bleaching. For the best results, a combination of the in-office bleaching and bleaching trays is the way to go.

Chinese reform politician Joseph Robinson Jr. dies of cancer Wan Li dies at age 99

The ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIJING – Wan Li, a Chinese politician known for his reform policies, died Wednesday at the age of 99, state media said.

The state-run digital publication The Paper, citing Wan’s son, said he died in Beijing.

State broadcaster CCTV also reported Wan’s death.

Wan was the chairman of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature, in 1989 when students gathered in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square for pro-democracy demonstrations. Wan’s stance on the protests was never made clear, though he never openly opposed the bloody military crackdown that ended them.

Wan, however, was a close

ally of the ruling Communist Party’s secretary general at the time, Zhao Ziyang, who was ousted for his support of the students and was under house arrest until his death in 2005.

Wan was best known for the reform policies that he began implementing in the late 1970s, especially in rural China.

When he was the party chief for the eastern province of Anhui, he became a pioneer for China’s rural reforms that would replace the commune system.

He also was one of the country’s first leaders to retire from his positions in the party and government, helping to end the practice by Chinese politicians of serving lifetime tenures.

NEW YORK – Joseph Robinson Jr., an executive at Sugarhill Records and a son of Sylvia Robinson, known as the Mother of Hip-Hop, died Saturday from cancer.

He was 53.

Family spokesman Greg Walker said Wednesday that Robinson, better known as Joey, died at his home in Tenafly, New Jersey.

Robinson’s mother founded Sugarhill Records.

She released the 1979 sem-

inal rap song, “Rapper’s Delight,” on her label. The song from the Sugarhill Gang became hip-hop’s first hit. It was released as hip-hop began to emerge as a genre, making its way into the Top 40 on the Billboard pop charts. She died in 2011.

Marlene Sanders, TV news reporter, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Marlene Sanders, a veteran television journalist for ABC and CBS News at a time that relatively few women did that job, has died of cancer. She was 84.

Sanders also was the mother of CNN and New Yorker journalist Jeffrey Toobin, who announced that she died Tuesday on his Facebook page.

“A pioneering television journalist – the first network newswoman to report from Vietnam, among many other firsts – she informed and inspired a generation,” Toobin wrote. “Above all, though, she was a great mom.”

Sanders was a producer for the late Mike Wallace in the early stages of his career. She wrote, reported and produced news and documentaries for WNEW-TV in New York be-

fore joining ABC News in 1964.

She worked there for 14 years.

She was the first woman to anchor a network evening newscast in 1964 when she filled in for Ron Cochran. She reported from Vietnam in 1966 and later became the first woman to be a vice president at ABC News, where she was head of the network’s documentary unit.

The ministry was big on Duke’s priorities, she said.

“I had also taken a class on prayer in the prison,” she said. “Jesus said we should be with people who are in prison.”

Wilson said she taught Bible studies in the women’s prison and through the sessions, built relationships with the inmates. It was a great experience for her to cross those boundaries, to get to know fel-

low Christians. “[It was about] how to live a faithful life whether you’re inside or outside prison,” she said. “It was as much for us as it was for them. I learned so much from the women about faith and who God is.”

Wilson said she enjoyed experiencing Southern life and culture in North Carolina, but requested to return to Illinois for her ministerial position.

She said she was delighted when she was assigned

to Morris, a community she knew.

Her aunts, Barb and Pam Wilson, are former residents, as is her uncle, John Oltman.

“I think it’s a great town,” she said. “Everyone at the church has been so welcoming.”

She gave her first sermon at the First United Methodist Church last week on Paul and his admitted weaknesses.

The church is made up of people with various weak-

nesses and wounds as well, she said.

Church members Wally and Barb Hildy said they are happy to have Wilson on board.

“We were impressed just meeting her on Sunday [July 5],” Barb said. “I think we have a good team with the senior pastor and this fresh new pastor. She really listens.

Wally and I were impressed with her first sermon and look forward to more.”

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS OTTAWA – The I-80 Chapter of The American Business Clubs in Seneca put on an event designed to bring donors of funds in touch with the families they help.

In June at the Marquette Academy Elementary gym in Ottawa, six families received AmTrykes, according to a news release from AMBUCS. AmTrykes are therapeutic adaptive trykes that strengthen mobility and independence in the user.

The trykes were fitted to children by members of the I-80 chapter who are physical therapists.

Every year the group has fitted disabled children with the AmTrykes and built trykes to be presented by the chapter and the donors for a specific child.

This year, it took a turn for the better as donors were invited to help build the trykes with the families and the children.

Each donor was set up with a family to build for. Coach Brad McGill from Marquette Academy showed competitive spirit against members of the Starved Rock Cycling Association.

The Rotary worked with the Hafely family to give both a run for their money.

Special donations from two of I-80 AMBUCS past riders was the highlight with Team Maci as well as the Kofoid family donating so another child can have that same feeling of freedom.

Everyone had a good time, with mentions of “we want to be involved next year” heard throughout, according to the release.

I-80 AMBUCS is a nonprofit organization based in Seneca dedicated to providing mobility and independence to those with disabilities.

OPINION Freedom and its responsibilities Earlier this month, we celebrated the Declaration of Independence, which announced our freedom from Great Britain. What is freedom, anyway?

Our debates aren’t worth a dime without knowing what we’re seeking to protect.

Brad Thor, the best-selling novelist whose most recent book is “Code of Conduct,” tells me: “Freedom is the ability to make the choices that I believe are best for myself and my family without the coercion of the state. It is being able to stand for what I believe in without dreading a knock upon my door in the middle of the night. It is participating in the public square, along with its many competing voices, and competing in the intellectual combat of rigorous debate without fear of reprisal – especially when my speech seeks to limit/turn back the growth of government and shine the light on the encroaching darkness of tyranny. It is, in short, my control of my life, my fortune and my destiny.”

Fr. Thomas Joseph White, a Dominican priest, says: “Freedom has its root in our desire for happiness. It is the amazing capacity we have to seek the truth concerning what is genuinely good for ourselves and others, to distinguish it from what is harmful or evil, and to pursue what will make us happy with wisdom and effectiveness. Freedom is what allows us to love other persons, and to be loved by them, to love the truth above all things, and to broach the mystery of God, with both genuine questioning and joyful reverence.”

Fr. James Schall put a different spin on things. He said that the question implied that freedom “can be a different thing for different people, a matter of opinion. If this is

If your freedom is the opposite of mine, with no objective criterion of truth and principle to resolve differences, then the only relation we can have is war and strife, not rational agreement. Freedom without truth does not exist.”

Pope Francis cautions: “(H) uman beings are not completely autonomous. Our freedom fades when it is handed over to the blind forces of the unconscious, of immediate needs, of self-interest, and of violence.

In this sense, we stand naked and exposed in the face of our ever-increasing power, lacking the wherewithal to control it.

We have certain superficial mechanisms, but we cannot claim to have a sound ethics, a culture and spirituality genuinely capable of setting limits and teaching clear-minded self-restraint.”

Freedom fades when we forget what it is and let ideology co-opt it, even with the best of intentions. Freedom fades when we abandon truth and our responsibility to uphold it.

Finding this in freedom will keep us free.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Houston appointment should be a temporary measure

To the Editor: This letter is in response to Mayor Richard Kopczick’s appointment of Julian Houston as 2nd Ward Alderman, without approval by the aldermen. Pursuant to statute, after the mayor’s second failed nomination was rejected by the aldermen, the mayor, without the advice and consent of the aldermen, had discretion to make a temporary appointment from his two failed nominations.

In particular, the statute suggests that, the mayor may make a temporary appointment from those persons who were nominated.

The mayor was not required to appoint either of his two failed nominees. Alternatively, he could have submitted additional nominations to the aldermen.

If the mayor elected to exercise his discretion to make a temporary appointment, the statute allows the mayor to make further nominations for alderman. The statute states that the person receiving the temporary appointment shall serve until another appointment has received the advice and consent of the aldermen and the appointee is qualified, or until a person has been elected and is qualified, whichever first occurs.

The mayor has the legal authority to continue to make nominations until a nominee is approved by the aldermen and the clear legislative intent is for the mayor to do so.

The appointment by the mayor of Mr. Houston without approval by the City Council is only a temporary appointment.

The Republican Party has been diligent, held a caucus and recommended to the mayor and aldermen two highly qualified people, David Valdivia and Thomas Hougas.

Mr. Valdivia has withdrawn his name from consideration, but Tom Hougas remains the Republican Party’s recommendation for the appointment. The Republican Party urges and requests the mayor nominate Tom Hougas for appointment as Second Ward Alderman.

The temporary appointee, Mr. Houston, seems like a nice person. However, the voters of the Second Ward deserve respect as to who they want to represent them. In the February 2015 election, the results were 38 percent for Houston, who was the incumbent alderman, and 62 percent for the write-in candidate, Doug Hayse. That indicates a strong voter desire for change in the 2nd Ward Alderman position.

The elected aldermen should also be extended respect from the mayor. They should be consulted for their advice and consent concerning the mayor’s aldermanic appointment.

I again urge the mayor to appoint Tom Hougas as 2nd Ward Alderman and that appointment be presented to the elected alderman for their consideration.

Minooka rushes past Lincoln-Way West

Hayden Laczynski, Brandon Rossiter and Joe Butler provided the thunder Wednesday afternoon as Minooka ousted Lincoln-Way West, 8-5, in a semifinal of the Lockport Regional in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic baseball series at Ed Flink Field.

The Indians’ reward is a 10 a.m. Thursday matchup against the winner of the Lincoln-Way Central vs. Lincoln-Way North game for the regional title and a berth in next week’s state tournament at North Central College and Benedictine University.

“A lot of the guys have confidence stepping into the box right now, and the good thing is, they aren’t necesarily the ones you most expect,” Indians coach Jeff Petrovic said of the Indians’ offense. “If those guys get going, watch out.”

Laczynski went 4 for 5 with two doubles, drove in a run and scored two.

Rossiter, coming off a 4-for4 effort in Minooka’s 11-6 quarterfinal win over Plainfield North, opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the second inning and contirbuted a two-run single with two outs in the fourth inning to provide a 5-3 lead the Indians (13-0) would not relinquish.

Butler smashed a two-run homer in a three-run fifth inning.

Nick Airola had two hits and drove in a run and Zach Earls added an RBI single.

“I absolutely want to be at the plate right now,” Rossiter said. “I am at a point where I expect myself to swing a hot bat, and the team to swing a hot bat together.”

Laczynski, the regular varsity shortstop last spring as a freshman, has done a yeoman’s job setting the table from the leadoff spot.

West scored twice in the third inning to force a 3-all tie because of the wildness from Minooka starter Tyler Talbot.

But the Indians’ bullpen – senior right-handers Tyler Fitzgerald and David Scott – took care of the final 41⁄3 innings.

“Our two senior pitchers came in and cleaned up nice,” Petrovic said.

The Minooka defense backed up the pitching. Second baseman Butler and Laczynski both made good plays, and Rossiter delivered the play of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Noah Hibler had led off for West with the first of his two doubles.

Rossiter, playing left field, moved toward the line and grabbed Matt Monahan’s line drive. He fired to second and doubled off Hibler to take the Warriors out of an early threat.

“That’s what happens when you move a good infielder to the outfield,” Petrovic said.

“Did you see how quickly Brandon got rid of the ball?

He didn’t wait to see what the runner was going to do. That’s a play where most outfielders would wait and not get the double play.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Most of the high school football during the summer takes place in the form of a 7-on-7 competition, which ulitizes backs and receivers on offense, and linebackers and defensive backs on defense. The linemen spend most of their time in the weight room.

On Wednesday, however, the big fellows took center stage at the Bolingbrook Linemen Challenge.

Morris had three separate teams of five taking part in the challenge, which consisted of six events.

The group known as Morris 1 consisted of seniors Jackson Shannon, Ryan Niewinski, Michael Galifos and Will Ringer and junior Keagan Sobol.

Morris 2 was made up of juniors Michael Hernandez, Zach Hipes, Jared Aiken and Bobby Stubinger and sophomore Nathan Korte.

Morris 3 was all sophomores, made up of Nolan Feeney, Brennan Goff, Alonzo Enriquez, Avery Hoffman and Joey Lyle.

The events each group competed in were bench press, 40-yard dash, obstacle course, shuttle race, medicine ball throw, five-man sled and tug of war.

In the bench press, each participant pressed 185 pounds as many times as he could.

In the medicine ball throw, a player took a 15-pound medicine ball and threw it from a seated position.

The shuttle race had the team split up into groups 20 yards apart. They carried a blocking dummy and handed it to a teammate, who did the same until all five players had their turn.

In the obstacle course, each player began by hurdling four blocking dummies, then went around another dummy before bear-crawling through four more. They turned another corner and went backward and forward through four more dummies. They then hit the ground, got up and sprinted to the finish line.

The tug of war pitted teams against each other and was decided when one team pulled another a certain distance.

The Morris teams performed well in most of the events, but the results weren’t the main focus.

“This was a lot of fun,” Shannon said. “It gives us linemen a chance to have something. The backs and receivers have the 7-on-7. We’ve been working hard all summer,

since March, really. It’s nice to get out of the weight room.

We like to call this the ‘Fat Kid Olympics.’

“I think the tug of war is my favorite event here. It’s fun to do and it’s fun to watch all the other teams do it, too.”

Morris line coach John Wodziak likes the fun aspect of it, too, but also sees other benefits.

“We spend so much time in the weight room with each other,” he said. “These kids have worked extremely hard and it’s good to get the out and have fun. But the competition is good, too. We like them to get used to competition, no matter what the environment is. And, it gets them to work as a unit.

“We also like to bring some

of the younger guys here so that they have something to try to improve on for next year.”

Morris coach Alan Thorson liked what he saw out of all three groups.

“It’s fun for the linemen,” he said. “They get to see how they compete with other linemen out there. And there are some big schools here. Bolingbrook, Oswego East, Downers Grove South. It gives our guys some perspective as to where they’re at.

“The tug of war gets us every year. The big things that I look at are the bench press and the sled drive. I was happy with our bench press results and I know that we had at least two of our teams near the top in the sled drive. Our line coaches, John Wodziak and Keith Anderson, do a good job with these guys. Every year, the line has its own personality and this competition helps them come together as a group.”

There is a preference signal in bridge that sometimes makes a player feel like he is flailing in a heavy surf.

This week we are showing him how to swim safely ashore. Sometimes, though, two good plays are required -- as in today’s deal.

Note finally that even if West unexpectedly holds the diamond king, declarer would win a trick-four diamond switch with his ace, draw trumps, and discard his diamond losers on dummy’s spade winners.
