Coal City needs volunteers

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City is again looking for volunteers to help continued recovery efforts from the EF3 tornado that damaged 884 properties June 22.

Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz said a phone call went out Thursday evening to at least 2,000 volunteers who have registered and lent their time and effort since the storm hit.

Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at Coal City High School as early as 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Fritz said.

Among the list of calls is to Coal City School District. Fritz said the village is hoping to have school clubs and teams volunteer.

The village received help from at least 1,700 volunteers the first week of recovery, but the average has dipped to about 18 volunteers per day since then, Fritz said.

Those volunteers are then led by Team Rubicon and AmeriCorps, which are both leaving town within a couple weeks.

Fritz said teams Friday and Saturday will have two primary tasks – clearing fields of debris and raking through parkways.

“We hope to get both of those tasks completed by the end of the week,” Fritz said.

The city has seen a great deal of help from Team Rubicon, which arrived June 23 in Coal City.

The nonprofit organization is comprised of mostly military veterans and first responders, and uses the skills of its members to rapidly deploy emergency response teams during natural disasters such as tornadoes.

William Porter, Team Rubicon Incident Commander, said Wednesday the team will keep in touch with homeowners as much as it can until July 18, when it is scheduled to leave town. He said AmeriCorps is heading out Friday.

“The city needs volunteers for the next year or two years in order to get everything back to normal,” Porter said. “Just because cleanup is close to done, doesn’t mean the recovery is done.”

Coal City will need qualified electricians and other skilled people to help restore normalcy, Porter said.

“The typical response effort last seven days, the relief effort lasts 30 days, but the recovery is much longer,” Porter said.

For the long term, organizations like the United Way and church groups do a lot of the work, he said. That work can include anything from fencing to planting grass seed, he said.

“The type of work takes volunteers because no one has the budget for it,” Porter said.

“In normal life, we’re not allowed to shoot BB guns because parents are so overprotective,” he said Thursday.

The experience was so enjoyable to de la Hera, who said his family typically works in the medical field, that he’s made a career choice.

“I’ve always wanted to be a hockey player or cop,” he said.

“I’ve now decided to be a cop.”

He and about 100 other children from local schools registered for Junior Crime Fighters Day, which was split into two groups – one Thursday and one Friday.

The Junior Crime Fighters met and spoke with Grundy County Associate Judge Sheldon Sobol, saw a Grundy County K9 Unit demonstration, toured Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District’s firehouse, witnessed a traffic stop demonstration and more.

The role of judge was portrayed by Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan, while sheriff’s deputies Kevin Bogard and Chad Hrechko played the state’s attorney and defense lawyer.

Sgt. Tanya Paquette laid out the scenario for the jury and audience, which was about a young woman accused of stealing $65 worth of makeup from a department store. Roles of the accused and witnesses were played by members of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorers.

After a quick deliberation, the jury found the suspect guilty and she was taken to jail by a Junior Crime Fighter bailiff.

The bailiff also had to remove a disruptive audience member.

Board discusses civil emergency policy Coal City tornado recovery sparks discussion on rebuilding policies

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Policies were discussed Thursday at a meeting of the Coal City Village Board, in the wake of the EF3 tornado that struck town June 22.

Village Administrator Matt Fritz presented the board and Mayor Terry Halliday with proposed ordinances in the hopes of boosting the recovery effort.

The board will vote Monday on whether to waive the village’s $100 demolition fee in case of civil emergency.

“We’re attempting to streamline the building inspection process and get people back in their homes,” Fritz said.

Fritz said the village has not needed the fee, which is charged when a water and sewer line needs to be capped.

The vote would make it official going forward.

When it comes to rebuilding homes, most work will be going down to the stud, Fritz said. The village does not have time to go through architect drawings. Halliday said the architect route could take eight to 12 weeks to get construction rolling, and people are welcome to do so, but the village wants to get people back in their homes as soon as possible.

“There are different and varying levels of work that must be done,” Fritz said. “If a house isn’t a complete rebuild, the village will accept CAD

drawings.”

Building and zoning officials said they assessed 879 homes, and designated 37 for demolition but expect that number will exceed 100 once insurance companies assess homes again.

Halliday emphasized what the village says in regards to a property isn’t final, that’s up to engineers and insurance companies.

“We can’t say it’s a teardown, but we can say it looks like a tear-down,” Halliday said.

Building and zoning officials said some of the homes need to be torn down because homeowners either didn’t or weren’t able to cover and secure their home before more rain damage came over the past two weeks.

The village has been handing out notices for homes that are unsafe and need to be inspected by a structural engineer before moving forward.

The village is in the middle of hiring part-time and temporary staff.

Fritz said a part-time administrative assistant is in place with an office staff, and three building inspectors will be hired. One is already in place, assisting the current building inspector, Fritz said.

The village is working to line up town hall meetings July 16 and 18, where residents can discuss with village officials and organizations that participated in the Multi-Agency Resource Center their post-tornado experiences and plans going forward.

Although the dates and times aren’t official yet, residents will be able to go through some small-group exercises with representatives.

Fritz said a news release will be sent soon to notify affected residents.

Coal City school district discusses damage repairs

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Coal City Community Unit School District 1 is facing repairs to its property after an EF3 tornado struck the town June 22.

Chief school business official Jason Smith said early estimates are between $500,000 to $600,000 for damage to three district sites.

“The auxiliary gym, or south gym at the high school, has a hole in the roof that caused the floor to be compromised with water,” Smith told the school board Wednesday.

When repairs take place in a school the district is required to check for asbestos, and the gym tested positive.

That means an asbestos abatement must be completed before construction can continue on the gym, Smith said. The abatement is not covered by insurance.

said the district expects asbestos removal to cost about $79,000.

The gym, which is used as both a practice gym and a physical education gym, has traditional wood floors. The district is looking at replacing it with a synthetic floor to save on upkeep costs. The district hopes to have repairs started on the gym by July 29.

There also was roof and water damage in the seventh-grade wing of the middle school, where a portion of the roof needs to be replaced.

Smith said Thursday there also are miscellaneous window and water damage to the two buildings.

The district completed construction in December on the replacement of a shed damaged in the 2013 Diamond tornado on district-owned property on Spring Road.

The most significant damage was on the athletic fields and its press boxes. Work will need to start immediately in order for athletes to compete this fall, with other projects being slated to start later for sports that start in the spring.

The district recently put together a five-year plan to upgrade the football field, which wasn’t as affected by the storm.

“The area we were looking at didn’t get damaged. Other athletic spots did, including fence that needs to be replaced,” Bugg said.

The board discussed using this time to look at some of the

changes on the original plan, which would include creating one press box that can be utilized by both the football and softball fields. Officials will make sure nothing is replaced that will be torn down as the district moves forward with its five-year plan.

“The soccer field fence has to be done. They start in a couple of weeks,” Bugg said.

He said there also is work needed at the middle school for athletics, and a new scoreboard for the football field already has been ordered.

Bugg also announced the Chicago Bears have pledged $50,000 to help with rebuilding, but the team didn’t have a time frame for when that donation will take place.

Bugg said he hopes to have updates at the Committee of the Whole meeting in two weeks.

10 D-1 addresses busing issue

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – With between 90 and 100 Coal City Community Unit School District 1 families displaced by the June 22 tornado, the district needs to address how to get about 150 students to school.

The Coal City School District Board learned Wednesday night that despite the consolidation of transportation routes that were in the works before the EF3 tornado that damaged more than 800 structures in the town, the transportation costs for the upcoming school year will be higher. Officials are uncertain where the routes will need to be created because they haven’t heard from all of the families.

“We still have seven or eight families that don’t have housing,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said.

He said students have relocated to several area towns, including Lockport, Kankakee, Ottawa, Dwight, Joliet, Naperville, Gardner, Minooka and Morris. The district must provide transportation to get students displaced by the tornado, according to the Illinois Education for Homeless Children Act. According to Illinois State Board of Education policy, homeless students include those sharing housing with others “due to loss of housing, economic hardship or other similar reason.”

Jason Smith, chief school business official, said the district has spent the last week gathering information so student services can reach out and work on the transportation issue. The district where the student is living has to split the cost of transportation with Coal City, Smith said.

Board members asked if that meant students would have to be bused in from any distance, and if there could be a cost savings by transporting in smaller district-owned vehicles.

Bugg said a one-hour bus ride seems to be the rule of thumb, although there is no set law on the distance. He said children living in Naperville or Lockport may be pushing that one-hour limit, and it is something the district will need to look at. Smith said state law requires students be transported in a traditional yellow school

bus. A bus route costs the district an average of $38,000 a year, and even with the savings from the four routes that were lost when the district combined routes for this year, the transportation for students displaced will mean possibly five or six additional routes.

Bugg said the district may have other options, including offering parents mileage reimbursement, that will be looked into. In addition to the transportation, students displaced by the tornado are eligible for free and reduced lunches and waived school fees. He said those income reductions, along with the reduced equalized assessed values for the homes damaged by the tornado, will affect the district’s budget in fiscal 2016 and 2017.

Robert Wendell Baker, age 86, of Sandwich, formerly of Yorkville, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich. He was born on Aug. 23, 1928, in Streator, the son of Alfred C. and Reva (Brierly) Baker.

Robert proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was formerly employed for many years by Lyon Metal Products INC in Montgomery, Illinois. Robert was a long time member of the Kendall County Farm Bureau.

He enjoyed several hobbies, including woodworking.

Robert was a loving son, brother, and cousin who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother, and loved to be home taking care of family. She helped her husband on their farm for over 50 years and also assisted Dale in his plumbing operation for over 20 years.

Former Saudi foreign minister dies

By ABDULLAH AL–HIHRI and LEE KEATH The Associated Press RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia’s Prince Saud al-Faisal, who was the world’s longest-serving foreign minister with 40 years in the post until his retirement this year, has died, the ministry spokesman said Friday. He was 75.

The tall, stately Prince Saud was a fixture of Mideast diplomacy, representing the oil-rich Gulf powerhouse as it wielded its influence in crisis after crisis shaking the region – from Lebanon’s civil war in the 1970s and 1980s, through multiple rounds of Arab-Israeli peace efforts, the 1990 Iraqi invasion of neighboring Kuwait and the subsequent Gulf War, al-Qaida’s Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq to the current day’s tensions between the Arab Gulf bloc and Iran, Arab Spring uprisings, Syria’s civil war and the spread of Islamic State group extremists.

The country’s government-owned media announced Saud’s death after midnight Friday. The official announcement, carried by state television, did not state the cause of death. The prince had under-

Word of his passing first emerged late Thursday when Saudi Foreign Ministry spokesman, Osama Nugali, wrote on his official Twitter feed, “The eye tears, the heart saddens. We all are saddened to be separated from you.”

The prince, who took the ministry post in 1975, retired on April 29, citing health reasons. At the time, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry hailed

him, saying he “has not just been the planet’s longest-serving foreign minister but also among the wisest.” He was succeeded in the post by Adel al-Jubeir, who before that was Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Washington.

Saud was the son of Saudi Arabia’s third king, Faisal, who ruled from 1964 until he was assassinated in 1975.

Prince Saud, who had a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University and had been deputy petroleum minister, was soon after appointed

to the foreign minister post, which his father had held during his reign. The young prince, fluent in English and French, brought an air of sophistication and charisma, whether in crisp suits or in the traditional Saudi white robe and gold-trimmed black cloak with a red-checkered head piece. Soft spoken, he often showed a sense of humor not often seen among the publicly stolid royal family.

He was father to six children, three boys and three girls. King Salman’s son, Prince Sultan, is married to one of Prince Saud’s daughters. The late prince’s brothers are also known as highly educated and eloquent, with Prince Khaled al-Faisal serving as the governor of Mecca and another brother, Prince Turki al-Faisal, heading a research center and think tank after decades as the head of intelligence.

Mamoun Fandy, author of Saudi Arabia and the Politics of Dissent, said his death marks the end of an era as the elder royals move to shift power to younger princes.

“The history of Saudi foreign policy is al-Faisal, both him and his father,” he said.

“It’s how the world knew Saudi Arabia, through al-Faisal.”

Longtime Bengals exec John Sawyer dies at age 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CINCINNATI – Former Cincinnati Bengals president and part owner John Sawyer has died. He was 90.

The Bengals said Sawyer died Thursday morning at a retirement home in Cincinnati after battling health problems for the past four years.

He was team president from 1968-93 and had served as a vice president since 1994.

He is considered to be one of the founders of the Bengals and had long been a key adviser to the Brown family, including Hall of Fame coach Paul Brown and his son Mike, now the team president.

Sawyer, a former World War II pilot, rarely missed a Bengals home or away game. He was a former part owner of the Cincinnati Reds and helped initiate construction of Riverfront Stadium, which was home to both franchises for more than 30 years.

Continued from page 3 Tyler Hansen, a senior at Morris Community High School and member of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorers, was one of several from the club to help out Thursday. Hansen has been involved with the Explorers program since 2013 and wants to be in law enforcement.

The Explorers are ages 14 to 20 and have an interest in law enforcement. Through the

program, they receive handson educational training on the purposes, mission and objectives of law enforcement.

Callahan said Paquette came up with the idea to create a Junior Crime Fighters Day to raise interest in law enforcement.

Paquette has been a driving force in creating law enforcement interest among young people, Callahan said.

“We want to spark interest in our Explorers program and give the kids some goals to shoot for,” Callahan said.

OPINION Triumphant day for Episcopal Church When Bishop William White of Philadelphia became a bishop in 1787, he was No. 2 in the Episcopal Church’s chain of apostolic succession.

When Bishop V. Gene Robinson was consecrated in 2003 – the first openly gay, noncelibate Episcopal bishop – he was No. 993. This fact was more than a trivia-game answer during a recent sermon that represented a triumphant moment both for Robinson and his church’s liberal establishment. Standing on White’s grave before the altar of historic Christ Church, the former New Hampshire bishop quipped that he did “feel a little rumble” when he referenced the recent Episcopal votes to approve same-sex marriage rites.

After a “week of blessings” – the Supreme Court win for same-sex marriage, as well as the long-awaited shift by Episcopalians – Robinson said it was now time to seek global change. It’s crucial to prove there is more to this cause than “white gay men” struggling to decide “where to have brunch on Sunday,” he said.

Robinson had a very personal reason to celebrate.

During General Convention meetings in Salt Lake City, Episcopal bishops, clergy and lay leaders approved rites for same-sex couples seeking to be married in church. The convention also edited gender-neutral language into its marriage laws, substituting “couple” for “man and woman.”

The canon changes passed in the House of Bishops with 129 in favor, 26 against and five abstaining. At the time of Robinson’s consecration, 48 diocesan bishops backed a statement defending traditional doctrines on marriage and sex. After the Utah votes, only 20 bishops signed a public statement of dissent.

VIEWS Terry Mattingly Robinson stressed that he grew up in rural Kentucky hearing conservatives quote the Bible in ways that left him confused and hurt. Today, this kind of oppression threatens people around the world, he said. But pain can become power. Gay people know what it’s like to be told they have “an affliction” and, thus, cannot go inside sanctuary doors, he said. They know what it means to be told “our sin makes us unworthy to be inside of the temple, that we are never going to be worthy in God’s eyes.”

Now America has entered an age in which Pandora’s box has been opened, he said, revealing that “we’re coming to the place where there are as many sexualities – plural – as there are human beings, because no two of us have the same experience.”

Americans need to see this as a kind of spiritual journey toward new revelations, the bishop said. Gay believers have already been there and done that.

“You can’t survive being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender unless you ask spiritual questions. ‘Who am I? Why am I here? What am I supposed to do? And does God love me?’ Those are the ultimate questions, and we’ve got some experience asking and answering them. We might even be able to help some of you straight people.”

No budget, no pay is necessary Illinois could learn a thing or two from the Brits.

The U.K.’s monarch has the ultimate nuclear option should Parliament fail to pass a budget. Queen Elizabeth can simply oust every minister and call an election to replace them.

Even the chief executive, the prime minister, is vulnerable should lawmakers undergo the ultimate dereliction of duty. Not only is a missed paycheck or two on the line for British lawmakers. Entire careers could end.

Surprise: The budget is always on time.

There’s no such punishment for incompetence in Illinois, where budget brinkmanship is the state pastime. The General Assembly and Gov. Bruce Rauner have spent weeks lobbing grenades while offering only political lip service. July 1 came and went.

And now, Illinois can’t fund many of its operations.

But, unlike in Britain, everyone gets paid. The General Assembly even had the gall this spring to try and give itself a pay raise. Rauner

rightly vetoed that bit of absurd self-indulgence.

What an embarrassment.

State lawmakers, fueled by a Democrat supermajority, approved cynical, self-serving legislation in the last days of the 2014 spring session assuring they get paid one way or another.

State parks might close. But, at least, the do-nothing set won’t go without. Pro-Rauner conservative think tanks were quick to go on attack July 1, the day the state officially entered a new fiscal year without a budget.

It’s wholly unjust that, should the impasse continue, rank-and-file state employees could pay the price. Rauner claims he can pay the 65,000 employees stuck in the middle of partisan squabbling.

State Attorney General Lisa Madigan – Speaker Mike Madigan’s daughter – says otherwise.

It’s shameful that the poor and elderly would bear the brunt of shuttered services.

It’s unfair the taxpayer will keep paying into an unsustainable government that bleeds cash and protects the

entrenched interests.

Everyone but those running the show stand to lose something.

For his part, Rauner has hinted that he won’t take a paycheck until a new funding plan is in place. Of course, the multimillionaire can afford it. Few if any state Department of Transportation employees are in the same boat. Rauner shouldn’t have the option. No budget, no pay.

Maybe because of pride or a mutual authoritarian streak, neither Rauner nor Madigan has offered much good faith at the negotiating table.

All the while, backbench lawmakers on both sides of the aisle remain loyal to strategies that will ultimately injure constituents and embarrass the state. No revolts here. Publicly questioning leadership is risky businesses in a system that prefers party to governance.

Loyal partisans have nothing to lose.

Consequences get results.

Area athletes post strong college seasons

VIEWS Rob Oesterle One of the nice things about having a successful sports area is that many local players continue their careers in college. Today we take a look at some area athletes who have performed well on the next level.

Former Seneca softball standout Nicole Pihl recently finished her sophomore season for DePaul University.

Pihl hit .293 for the Blue Demons Among her 34 hits were six doubles, one triple and 11 home runs, a sum critical to the team in setting a new school record for home runs in a season.

Minooka graduate Mitch Vogrin was 1-0 with a 5.29 ERA in 14 relief appearances during his freshman season for Illinois State University.

In 17 innings, Vogrin struck out 12 and walked 11. He had the best ERA of any pitcher on the team that appeared only in relief.

Morris grad Haleigh Knapp, a three-time state high jump champion, continued her success at Eastern Illinois University. Knapp was named first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference during the indoor season after she won the high jump in the indoor conference meet, clearing 5-6. During the outdoor season, Knapp cleared 5-feet-7 at the OVC meet, earning second place and second-team all-conference honors. Her jump

currently ranks eighth on the all-time EIU list.

Minooka graduate T.J. Condon was named the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year as he helped lead Joliet Junior College to a national runner-up finish in baseball.

Fellow Minooka grads Brennan Polcyn and Trevor Maly were also on the Wolves’ team this spring.

At the University of St. Francis, Morris grad Kjeld Torkelson hit .250 with eight doubles, a triple and 19 RBIs for the Saints. He started 33 games for USF, which finished 27-28. Coal City’s Dan Darling was a relief pitcher for USF, finishing 3-4 with four saves and a 1.79 ERA. On the football team, Minooka’s Mitch Brozovich completed 24 of 58 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns and also ran 47 times for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Morris graduate Greg Struck hit .297 for Elmhurst College, collecting eight doubles, one triple and a team-leading five home runs.

He also had 22 RBIs and stole four bases in five attempts.

Also at Elmhurst, Minooka’s Mitch Morris went 20-11 at 174 pounds for the Bluejays’ wrestling team. He won seven matches by pin and was only pinned once.

At Lewis University, Minooka’s Neal Tyrell had a stellar freshman season, hitting .319 with 14 doubles, one triple and 16 RBIs to go with nine stolen bases in 10 attempts.

Valley Conferenece team in men’s track and field. He was also named the GLVC Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 55-meter dash at the Lewis Open in January. Fellow Minooka grad Dan Lentz was also named Academic All-GLVC. He finished third at the Herschell Neil Decathlon with 6,343 points and was second in the 110-meter hurdles at the Benedictine Twilight Invitational.

The St. Ambrose University football team had a local feel to it, as Seneca’s Tyler Hovious was the Bees’ second-leading rusher with 400 yards and one touchdown in 80 attempts. He also caught eight passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Luke Stovall, a Minooka grad, caught four passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, one of them covering 95 yards.

Morris graduate Trevor Lines hit .167 for Bellarmine University’s baseball team this spring, while former Redskins teammate Tim Smyk hit .200 for Illinois Wesleyan.

Summer is blasting by.

Before we know it, July will be past the halfway point and August will be squarely in our sights. I don’t know about you, but my list of things I wanted to accomplish this summer is not getting crossed off. For the avid deer hunter, it is also time to seriously think about getting those food plots ready for a fall planting.

Most of the time we think of spring as the opportune moment to plant. We’ve grown up with that mentality and see it all around us. Yes, planting food plots in the spring works and lots of people do. With that said, I prefer to plant in the fall.

Time is at a premium. If we actually carve out part of a day to work the soil and plant a plot, it is unlikely that we will be as diligent with maintaining that plot through the summer. Weeds are a deer hunter’s worst enemy when talking about healthy plots.

This particular year has been worse than most. The constant rain has provided an abundance of opportunities for weeds of all types to not only take hold, but spread rapidly. Many plots that were

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers planted in April or May now look like an out of control patch of grass. Fall planting virtually eliminates the weed problem. I know the month of August can historically be dry, but usually enough rain does fall to establish a late summer plot.

The variety of food plot products on the market now can be tailored to your particular climate type and soil conditions. The advances made in agronomy help the plot to take root fast and get a jump on other competitive species.

Planting your plot in August also allows for it to fully mature and establish itself before the opening day on Oct. 1. This is important if you plan to hold deer on your property or reroute them so they pass by your stand on the way to the plot.

Once your plot is up and lush, it won’t take long for the deer to find and utilize it.

The maintenance on a plot planted at this time should be

minimal. In years past, I have had to mow it once, or if I’m lucky, nothing at all. A fresh mowing a week or two before the season opens up is always a good thing to do. The fresh cutting spurs new growth that the deer will find quite appealing. As far as the types of products available, I am a big fan of clover. I have had amazing success with Imperial Whitetail Clover and have planted it in many soil types throughout our area.

Having the plot started in the fall will give it a head start over the weeds the following spring. If you have the time, make sure and plant a plot this August.

It will be worth the time and effort. Seeing more wildlife activity is always a plus, whether you plan on hunting or not. Just be sure to take a soil sample first. Odds are you will need to put down some lime and possibly other fertilizers.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and keep dreaming about the fall.

team wins tourney title MORRIS HERALD–NEWS After finishing in first place during the regular season of the Southwest Suburban Softball 14U division with a 15-2 record, the 13U Minooka Magic won the Southwest Suburban Softball 14U Travel Tournament on Wednesday.

The Magic defeated the 14U Lockport Prowl, 7-1, in the championship game.

The Magic offense was led

by Desiree Anderson’s single, triple, and three RBIs, along with two hits and two RBIs from Brooke Sulima.

Kynsey Cryder had an RBI double to extend the Magic lead in the sixth inning, while Morgan Garcia added two hits, Lauren Smith had a double, and Nicole Lovato had a single and two runs

scored.

Sammy Norman secured the defense with several catches in center field, while Amber Zilinger and Allie Vandergrift played a flawless second base and Faith Cunning held down right field.

Lauren Smith pitched the complete-game victory, allowing only one run on four hits, Coach Cindy Norman led the Magic to a 27-7 record, including the regular-season Southwest Suburban Softball league championship, the tournament championship in the Southwest Suburban Softball League 14U division, and a third-place finish in a Peoria NSA qualifier tournament. Assistant coaches included Chris Norman, Art Vandergrift and Allison Anderson.

When you play bridge, keeping some statistics is not a bad idea. For example, in a duplicate (or during a social game) note how many times your opponents went down two or more. If several, you did not double enough.

How often do you find the best opening lead? Treat each one with care, though, because the “right” opening lead will not always turn out to be best in a given deal.

After South opened one no-trump, North used Stayman. When South rebid two hearts, North’s slightly aggressive jump to three no-trump announced a four-card spade holding and asked South to retreat to game in that suit if he also held four. Here, of course, South passed out three no-trump.

What should West lead?

The books tell you to lead the top of three touching honors against a notrump contract. However, here, how are the spades distributed?

North is known to have four, and South has two or three. This leaves East with two or one. If East has a singleton, the suit will be useless.

West should hope that his partner has a doubleton, preferably honor-doubleton. And not to block the suit, West must lead the seven, fourth-highest from his longest and strongest.

Here, East should win with his ace and return the suit, which defeats the contract. The defenders must get four spades and one heart. Even if South wins with dummy’s spade king and runs diamonds, finessing through East, West can discard two hearts.
