The city of Morris Pool sits drained and cleaned waiting to be refilled for some summer fun.

Morris pool expected to be open Saturday Monday’s rain causes standing water in area

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris residents should be able to spend their Fourth of July swimming. The Morris Pool has been cleaned and is ready to refill as soon as a replacement part is added.

“We are waiting on parts,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday. “We would have been open if we had the right part.”

Jim Hitchcock, manager of the pool, said employees spent half a day cleaning the pool from the water brought in during the flooding of East Fork Nettle Creek behind the pool on June 13.

When they finished cleaning, they found a part needed to be replaced in order to fill the pool properly. The part was ordered, but the company sent the wrong part, slowing the opening.

“They are overnighting us the right part and we will

get that in and then we have to let it sit for 24 hours before we fill it,” Hitchcock said. “If it doesn’t rain we should be open

by Saturday.”

Hitchcock said refunds were being issued for June’s Swim Lessons, Little Fins, and Parent & Me classes that were canceled because of the flooding and the closing of the pool.

July swim lessons and Parent & Me classes will have signup during open swim hours when the pool opens Saturday for those who wish to attend.

Hitchcock said staff also are looking forward to having scuba diving lessons for the first time this year at Morris Pool and said the details are being worked out.

Kopczick said some areas of town are still seeing issues of standing water during heavy rainfall like the one inch that fell in about an hour Monday night.

The Illinois River at 2:45 p.m Tuesday afternoon was observed at 16.12 feet in Morris. The flood level is 16 feet, according to the National

Weather Service. By Wednesday evening, it was expected to drop below 16 feet.

“I saw on my rain gauge at home that we had 1.5 inches from Monday at 4 p.m. until this morning,” Kopczick said.

“One inch of that came down in an hour.”

He said the infrastructure was not designed to handle that volume in such a small time frame, which can cause water to stand on roads until it can drain away.

“Some of the infrastructure in this town is 100 years old,” he said. “We’ve been working on it and there is only so much money and so much time to get it all done.”

He said some residents experienced sewer backup during the heavy rainfalls and he’s hoping as the city continue to work on the infrastructure needs, it will help those residents.

He said the city just finished a $4 million upgrade and the city is about to start a $6 million upgrade to the sewer system, totaling $10 million in upgrades when the work is complete.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris was recently ranked the 19th on the Best Place to Start a Business in Illinois list, three months after being chosen as one of the 10 best cities to retire to in Illinois.

“It’s pretty neat,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said. “We work hard for it, and now people outside of Morris see it.”

The study, done by NerdWallet.com, analyzed 285 places in Illinois, each with a population of at least 5,000.

Analyst Jonathan Todd calculated the overall score for every location based on the city’s business climate and economic health using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, according to the study.

The methodology of the study weighted 65 percent of the score on business climate, divided into subcategories – average revenue of businesses (20 percent), percentage of businesses with paid employees (25 percent) and businesses per 100 people (20 percent).

The remaining 35 percent of the score was divided into the subcategories of median annual income (10 percent), median annual housing costs (10 percent) and unemployment rate

Joliet resident creates fundraiser for Coal City tornado relief Coal City native wants to provide others a way to help

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Courtney Kantor could not take off work to join volunteers in Coal City last Friday to help those affected by the June 22 tornado – but she wanted to do something for her hometown.

Coal City is where her family and friends live. Many of her friends lost their homes.

So Kantor, who lives in Joliet, created a T-shirt bearing the colors of the high school football team so she could sell them in an online fundraiser to help people affected by the tornado.

“I had to find a way to really help out. It’s a small community. When you’ve been there for so long, it’s like a family,” Kantor said.

As of Tuesday morning, 516 T-shirts were sold and $6,720 was raised. Money from the fundraiser is to be donated to the Community Foundation of Grundy County for the Coal City tornado disaster relief fund.

The green and yellow colors are based on the Coal City High School football team. Kantor said when people are in the area during the football season, those are the only colors people wear.

Kantor said the fundraiser isn’t for her, but the people affected by the tornado, as well as to give others such as herself a way to help out.

fsarver@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Workers have swept away much of the debris caused by the Coal City tornado last week and village officials expect the rest to be done by the end of Wednesday.

Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said the village has more than 100 pieces of equipment active in 13 zones to clean up debris left over from the the EF3 tornado that destroyed or damaged more than 800 of properties in Coal City.

Halliday said teams Tuesday were checking off streets they cleared of debris. He anticipated 60 percent of the village would be clean of debris by the end of Tuesday and the village would be clear by the end of Wednesday. The debris does not include personal items, he said.

“The town is looking a lot better, and we made a big, big dent in our debris removal,” Halliday said.

Thousands of volunteers began work Friday in Coal City, and their efforts will continue the rest of the week under the coordination of Team Rubicon, an international nonprofit disaster response organization.

The organization routinely responds to tornado disaster emergencies.

• The Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, 909 N. Liberty St., Morris, is accepting items found blown into yards that may belong to residents affected by the tornado.

MORRIS – The Morris Planning Commission has recommended the City Council approve at its Monday meeting two requests from local property owners.

The commission last week positively recommended council change the form of structure of WC-Morris LLC, formerly Wakefield Communities-Morris LLC, located on Twilight Drive.

Under the proposed plan, residential units will become known as Deer Park Retirement Community and be separate from the existing assisted living business previously known as Walnut Grove Village.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said Tuesday that tenants were previously under an agreement similar to a lease, but they will now be able to own units. The units can be deeded over to the family in the case of a resident dying.

The community will have a homeowner’s association and fees that will pay for overall maintenance of the property.

One duplex, Cheshareck said, will be turned into a common area and the community will have a clubhouse type of area.

The commission also discussed an apartment located above a garage on Jefferson Street in Morris. Elizabeth Brownewell, of the 300 block of West Jefferson Street, applied

for a conditional permitted use permit for two units in a single family lot. A living unit above the garage has existed for more than 50 years, but Brownewell had elected not to rent the apartment in recent years.

In order to rent it again in the future, Cheshareck said Brownewell was required to renew the classification because the permit had expired.

The commission recommended council approve the permit, which would allow the unit to be legally rented upon reinstatement.

Waiver for vital, homeowner land records

Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson announced temporary waiver of fees for replacement of certified copies of vital records, as well as homeowner land records, for those affected by the tornado.

According to a news release, residents who lost records in the storm may obtain a replacement certified copy of birth, marriage or death certificates at the Clerk’s Office, Room 12 in the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington St., Morris.

The waiver will remain in effect through Sept. 30.

County officials said tornado victims should bring photo identification or other documents demonstrating their home address.

MORRIS – When Kelly Hitt was hired by the Grundy County Health Department as a volunteer coordinator in 2009, there were only five volunteers. Today, there are 50 volunteers as part of the Grundy County Medical Reserve Corps, an organization under the umbrella of the Health Department.

Hitt was honored recently for her hard work and dedication at the 2015 Integrated Public Health and Healthcare System Preparedness Summit, where she received the Local Leadership Award.

The award recognizes an individual, faculty or staff in Illinois who has made a significant impact in advocating for and preparing people for a local emergency.

“Kelly was ranked the No. 1 Medical Reserve Corps earlier this year,” Health Department Administrator Phil Jass said.

“At the summit you usually see larger health departments recognized because the smaller ones don’t have the time to write the nomination. We took the time to write it.”

Also winning an award was Donna Lee, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, for her creativity in creating an emergency Zombie Apocalypse drill. She won the Creative Drill or Exercises Award for her efforts.

The award recognizes a local health department, hospital or community-based organization that has been responsible for a unique and innovative emergency drill, which results in increased participation.

Lee said it wasn’t just her idea that lead to the award.

She was the manager of a team of co-workers who helped put the event together.

“I’m uncomfortable with it going to me because it was a group effort. It was the whole team,” Lee said. “I thought it was nice. The nomination meant more to me personally because it comes from my co-workers.”

Jass said he was glad to see Lee and Hitt recognized for their hard work and leadership.

“We have outstanding people throughout the Grundy County Health Department,”

work for both our community and the business owners.”

Businesses look at untapped markets and find one in Morris, Kopczick said. In one current instance, a nationwide company is looking to make a partnership with Morris, and capitalize on its potential.

Buffalo Wild Wings’ upcoming formal presentation of its plans for the former Aldi location in Morris, Kopczick said, is an example of meeting a demand. The nearest location is in Shorewood.

Filling gaps in demand isn’t only reserved for nationwide chains, however. Startup businesses often are opened by people who grew up in Morris or nearby, Kopczick said, as they recognize services and markets that aren’t covered in Morris.

One such example is Eric Peterson, of Peterson Computer Consulting, who’s been in business for nine years. The business provides computer advice and service for personal and commercial use.

He said being active in the community he grew up in is important to success.

“Whether it be a luncheon or golf outing, I always seem to find business [from going to them],” Peterson said.

Peterson, who served as a consultant for the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Joliet Junior College, was honored as the 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

There are great connections available with the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, Morris Downtown Development Partnership and by making time to work with nonprofits, such as the United Way of Grundy County, Peterson said.

Peterson said the first three years he was working another job and going to school, so IT help was done in his spare time. He worked out the bugs and realized what he was trying to accomplish, he said.

“From there I grew,” Peterson said.

“I have good relationships with other IT businesses,” Peterson said. “I don’t bad-mouth anyone. I want us all to grow.”

Donna Ramirez, owner of Sweet Tooth, a candy store on Liberty Street, said the smalltown environment is beneficial to new businesses because people know and support each other.

Ramirez said she moved to Morris in 1998 and eight years later took over ownership of Sweet Tooth, a pre-existing business. Sweet Tooth is open in the evenings and expanded weekend hours, which greatly improved sales, she said.

Local agencies brace for state shutdown

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – As Illinois lawmakers in Springfield continue the blame game over a budget impasse, leaders of local nonprofits and social service agencies are white-knuckled at the thought of an extended government shutdown.

The new fiscal year, which started at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, likely began without a budget in place for the year – unless a last-minute deal was reached late Tuesday night.

“Many will be operating on a very fragile belief that they can continue doing business for a limited time [without state funding],” said Frank Di Bartolomeo, president and CEO for Services Inc. of Will, Grundy and Kankakee Counties.

The local agency – also known as the Child and Family Connections – serves thousands of residents of those three counties by providing early intervention programs for children with disabilities and other services for adults with development disabilities.

Funded primarily through the Illinois Department of Human Services, such critical programs “will certainly” be shut down if a budget deal is not reached soon, Di Bartolomeo said.

Like many groups, the local agency will be operating on a line of credit and relying on cash reserves for as long as it can, Di Bartolomeo said.

But there’s no telling how long the banks will allow agencies to continue pulling from those lines, he said.

“And that means I’ll have to close my doors. And if I close my doors, 77 employees will get furloughed,” he said. “Parents are calling, asking ‘What do we do? Where do we go?’ ”

A stopgap solution

Republican lawmakers Tuesday pushed back hard against a Democratic-backed $2.3 billion stopgap spending plan designed to fund essential

services for one month while negotiations continue. A vote is possible Wednesday, but Gov. Bruce Rauner has repeatedly stated he would veto any short-term fixes.

House Speaker Michael Madigan said the $2.3 billion proposal would pay for state police protection, monitoring sex offenders, health care coverage for the poor and disabled, and more.

The Chicago Democrat said it’s “another opportunity” for Rauner to avoid a government shutdown.

But state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, called the move “another gimmick,” by the Democratic Party.

“This is a gimmick, just like the gimmicks that got us in this situation in the first place,” Rezin said.

Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, said she doesn’t see a reason to kick the can down the road.

“Why in the name of heaven would any of us look at a bill that continues with unsustainable spending? There’s no reason to play games anymore,” McDermed said. “That’s a distraction. Madigan’s bill is intended to distract people from the real issue. Don’t be fooled.”

Still, Democrats and social service agency leaders often argue it’s Rauner who is holding state services hostage by using the budget crisis as leverage to pass his nonbudgetary Turnaround Agenda items.

Even Di Bartolomeo said he is uncertain about the benefits of a short-term fix.

“As much as it’s difficult for me to say this, I think that’s the wrong idea because all that does it help things cripple along [and] that doesn’t force the two sides to start negotiating seriously,” Di Bartolomeo said.

Other programs in jeopardy

The government shutdown has leaders from other nonprofits in the area – including Will County Center for Community Concerns – worried.

At stake is the state’s en-

ergy bill assistance program that is administered locally through the center, said Kris White, longtime executive director for WCCCC. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program – suspended earlier this year by the governor – provides supplemental funding for low-income renters and homeowners who can’t afford to pay their energy bill.

Without a state budget, the 63,000 people relying on financial assistance statewide will be dropped from the program, she said, and the next open enrollment period wouldn’t be until October. Exemptions are made for seniors and people with disabilities, but it’s

unclear whether funding for the program will ever come to fruition.

“Unfortunately, no, it’s not fair. For me, the sad part is, while we’re going through this, it’s our clients and our customers who are most impacted.”

White said she didn’t want to comment on how long WCCCC could survive with cash reserves and a line of credit.

But it won’t be easy, she said.

“We will do our best to keep an open line of communication with our customers,” White said. “We are going to try to keep our agency going.

Of course, it will all depend on how long government is shut down.”

As of late Tuesday, a budget deal had not been reached.

Meanwhile, the Illinois House took testimony in Springfield from more than a dozen key state agencies on how they intend to survive a shutdown.

Neal Waltmire, with the Responsible Budget Coalition, said a government shutdown puts nonprofits and social services agencies in “an absolutely unnecessary but terrible situation.”

“The problem is that some of this you just can’t repair.

She was known locally for her expertise in cake decorating and also for creating works of art using eggs.

Surviving are two children, Kenneth E. Jensen of Fisher, IL and Janet E. Fredericksen of Plainfield, IL; four grandchildren, Rudolph Jensen, Jillian Jensen, Julie Fredericksen, and Ann (John) Provencher; three

great grandchildren, Camilla and Josephine Provencher and Ian Parada; one brother, Ralph (Lela) Haldorson of Wilmington, IL; four sisters, Alice (late Elmer) Wills of Coal City, Lucille (late Royce) Quayle of Coal City, Betty (late Joseph) Panish of Morris, and June (LeRoy) Hedgecock of Momence; three sistersin-law, Betty Haldorson of Morris, Phyllis Haldorson of Wilmington, and Margaret Haldorson of Joliet, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Harold; seven brothers, Howard, Raymond, Charles, John, Clyde, Robert (Gen), and George Haldorson; and one sister, Elsie (Joe) Skubic.

Charles Pasqua dies at age 88 Jack Carter, brash comic, dies at 93 The ASSOCIATED PRESS

PARIS – Charles Pasqua, a French Resistance fighter who went on to become France’s top security chief and a powerful player on the French right, has died in Paris.

He was 88.

French President Francois Hollande confirmed the death in a communique Tuesday, calling him a “Gaullist” whose “whole personality enlivened French political life.”

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy – who became an ally of Pasqua after beating him out for a mayoral race in 1983 – said in a tweet that “France has lost one of its greatest servants.”

Pasqua faced multiple corruption trials and scandals, and was well known for hardline anti-terrorist and anti-immigration policies.

He was inspired by post World War II President Charles de Gaulle, a symbol of the French Resistance, who came to stand for a strong economy, strong leadership and French national unity.

LOS ANGELES – Jack Carter, whose brash, caustic comedy made him a star in early television and helped him sustain a career of more than a half-century in TV, n i g h t c l u b s , Jack Carter movies and on stage, died of respiratory failure at his Beverly Hills, California, home, a family spokesman said.

Carter turned 93 just four days before he died Sunday, Jeff Sanderson said.

In 1948, when network television was beginning, Carter starred in a series of variety shows on ABC. In 1950, Pat Weaver, the visionary NBC programmer who fostered the “Today” and “Tonight” shows and other innovations,

scheduled two hours of programming called “Saturday Night Revue.”

“The Jack Carter Show,” broadcast from Chicago, filled the first hour, and the comedian opened it with a standup routine that poked fun at the day’s news, a device latenight comics still use. From there, the show moved on to music and comedy skits. The second hour was taken up by “Your Show of Shows,” starring Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. Their sophisticated comedy became a sensation, and after “Saturday Night Revue’s” first season, “The Jack Carter Show” was canceled.

Although he would remain a popular guest star in television, Carter would never again headline his own network series.

Throughout his career, Carter remained the attacker, poking fun at members of the audience, disparaging politicians and celebrities.

By MELISSA D’ARABIAN The Associated Press The turkey burger has become the healthy default of grilling season. And that’s really not a bad call.

That’s because a 90 percent lean turkey burger (4 ounces) has only about 160 calories, yet still offers an impressive 20 grams of protein and just 9 grams of fat. Just don’t be tempted to buy leaner ground turkey.

It may be fine in other recipes, but when making burgers anything leaner than 10 percent fat will produce tough, dry patties.

Even 90 percent ground turkey requires some careful handling in order to ensure a juicy, tasty burger. I have two tricks that are game-changers for your turkey burgers.

First, use an instant-read thermometer. You can get one for under $10 almost anywhere. This is money

well spent, and not just for burgers. Unless you are very experienced with meat, use the thermometer to take the guesswork out of grilling.

It makes it easy to know exactly when the meat has hit the desired temperature.

A turkey burger needs to cook to 165 F, but don’t let it go one degree above that! In fact, I take mine off the grill a degree or two early because meat continues to cook a bit after it comes off the heat.

Second, flavor the burger – both in the patty and with a topping. Turkey burgers are almost always better when they have a little flavoring in the meat.

And then you also want to top them with something to add flavor and moisture, such as marinated summer peaches and goat cheese, which I stretched with some high-protein, low-fat Greek yogurt.

This is a turkey burger your guests will love this summer.

TURKEY BURGERS WITH GOAT CHEESE AND GRILLED PEACHES Start to Finish: 30 minutes Servings: 4

1 1⁄4 pounds 90 percent lean ground turkey 1 tablespoon hot sauce 1 medium shallot, minced, divided 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric Kosher salt and ground black pepper 3 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme, divided 1 1⁄2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar or white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 large peaches, sliced into 1⁄4inch rounds 4-ounce log fresh goat cheese 1⁄2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt Juice and zest of 1⁄2 lemon Vegetable oil, for brushing burgers

Morris’ Moore named Softball Player of the Year “I like throwing runners out and I like when someone bunts and I can go out there and get it and throw them out. I like being able to see the whole field in front of me.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com For a great many high school softball teams, the one player they could not afford to lose during the course of the season is the No. 1 pitcher.

So much of game is based on pitching that the loss of that one person would have a huge effect.

This spring, however, the Morris softball team had plenty of pitching. The player whom the Redskins could least afford to lose was catcher Emily Moore. Moore caught all but two of the Redskins’ 33 games, providing stability on both defense and offense. Moore delivered not only stability, but topnotch performance, whether behind the plate or at it. That is why she is named the Morris Herald-News Softball Player of the Year.

Moore, a junior, had a hit in all but five of the 33 games, and failed to reach base in some way in only two games.

She ended with a .371 batting average to go with 30 RBIs, 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs. At one point in the season, she had a 17-game hitting streak and helped lead the Redskins to a second straight Class 3A regional title.

“I thought we had a really good season,” she said.

“We really worked hard and bonded throughout the season and were able to win another regional. That was great. We never gave up on each other.”

But the offensive numbers, impressive in their own right, don’t tell the whole story of Moore’s value to the team. As a catcher, she is basically another coach on the field, and her coach couldn’t be happier about that.

“Defensively, we couldn’t afford to lose her,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “[No. 1 pitcher] Abby Burns was working on a drop ball this year, and Emily blocked a lot of pitches in the dirt. She really took more control of the game this year, and she basically stopped some teams from running at all. She gets the ball up and out so quickly that her throw doesn’t have to be right on line. It’s there so

quick that the fielder has time to adjust and make the tag. A lot of teams didn’t even try to run on her.

“She’s a leader. She’s not real vocal, but she can talk to our pitchers when things get out of hand. She can tell when the other team’s momentum needs to be broken. She helps our team stay calm and keeps things from getting out of hand. Even in some games that we might be winning by a lot and some girls might tend to get lackadaisical, Emily keeps the work ethic and effort at 100

percent and the other girls see that and do it, too. She’s quiet, but we have a lot of quiet girls on the team Emily is a leader by example and the girls respect what she does and do the same.”

Catcher is generally the hardest position on the field to fill. Not many players want to go behind the plate, and the gear they wear has been referred to as “the tools of ignorance.”

Don’t tell that to Moore, though.

“I love catching,” she said.

“When I was in rec ball, my coach asked me if I wanted to catch, so I said I would try it.

I started catching fulltime in travel ball, and I have loved it ever since. I like throwing runners out and I like when someone bunts and I can go out there and get it and throw them out. I like being able to see the whole field in front of me.

“Sometimes the coaches would tell me to go to the mound and talk to the pitcher, and sometimes I would just go out there on my own.

Usually, I can tell if a pitcher is strugging. Like, if they gave up a couple of hits in a row or walked a couple of hitters in a row, or if the bases are loaded.

I know the pitchers and I can tell by how they are acting if I need to go talk to them. I will just tell to relax, we’ve got this.

Let’s get out of this inning and then we will go in and hit.”

And when the Redskins did come in to hit, Moore was, more often than not, one of the catalysts for the offense.

“I worked on my hitting a lot with a personal trainer in Romeoville,” she said.

“I worked on my form and worked a lot on hitting outside pitches. I also worked on adjusting to slow pitches and

hitting those. I feel real good about the work I did.”

All that work presented more problems for the opposition.

“Emily was so important to us,” Lowery said. “She not only had only five games where she didn’t get a hit, but there were only two games where she wasn’t on base at least once. And she is something when she is on base. She has a lot of speed, and she is a smart base runner. She can anticipate things very well, and her speed makes her that much more dangerous.

“She was very consistent offensively. It was nice to be able to write her name in the third spot of the lineup and pretty much know what we were going to get. She makes the defense work, even when she makes outs. She hits the ball hard and she has a lot of speed.

For a defense, that’s scary. You know the ball is going to come at you hard, and if you bobble it just a little, she’s going to beat it out. And outfielders know they can’t let the ball get past them or else she will be on second or third. She’s just a solid all-around player. She did a lot of work in the off season, working on hitting inside and outside pitches.”

Lowery is also looking forward to another year with Moore in a Redskin uniform.

“We are only losing two seniors,” she said “Having Emily coming back will be huge.

It will be great to have her behind the plate again. She is a great example of work ethic and drive [who] the new kids coming up will be able to learn from.”

Racing double feature STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – The D’Arcy GMC Short Track Auto Racing Series will return Saturday at Grundy County Speedway during the 111th annual Grundy County Fair. Extra racing is planned because of the rain-shortened events of June 20. Pit gates will open at noon and the front gates at 3 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 4 p.m. and the first race at 4:30 p.m. The STARS events June 20 were halted by rain after only the Illini Racing Series feature was run. In that feature, defending Illini Racing Series champion and current points leader Patrick Bruns took first.

Saturday will be a double-feature night for the National Midgets, the Classic Modifieds (Dwarf), the Central States Region Minicups and the Legacy Midwest Racing Series.

In addition to the makeup feature for those four divisions, STARS will have a full night of events for all five divisions. Every division will have qualify-

ing, heat races and features.

The National Midget division feature will be the STARS fifth annual Freedom 50-lap event. The night will include the Hamilton brothers, Kyle and Nick, from Indianapolis making their return to STARS. They will be challenging current points leader Billy Hulbert of Channahon, who currently leads Brad Greenup, also of Channahon, by nine points. The top five in points is rounded out

by Mario Clouser, Ryan Probst and Tyler Baran.

In the Classic Modifieds (Dwarf) division, Darren Ihrke leads by 44 points over Ed Ensor. Ihrke increased his lead by setting a fast time and winning his heat race on June 20.

After setting fast time in qualifications and finishing second in her heat race on June 20, 14-year-old Amanda Bohn leads the CSR Minicups. In the Legacy Midwest Racing division, Nathan Bertino of Lockport leads Jordan Caskey by three points.

Labor showdown looms in capital SPRINGFIELD – The way Illinois handles negotiations with the largest union representing state workers always has been political.

When the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees flexes it political muscle in Springfield, politicians quake.

Between 2002 and 2014, AFSCME has poured $5.8 million into the campaign coffers of state politicians.

And then the union officials who doled out the dough ended up sitting across the negotiating table from the very pols they helped elect.

Perhaps not surprisingly, those politicians got more generous with our tax dollars and ladled out cash and promises to union bosses as if tomorrow didn’t matter.

Of course, in politics, it’s the next election – not tomorrow – that matters. Look no further than September 2010.

In the midst of a campaign – three days after receiving an AFSCME endorsement – thenGov. Pat Quinn signed a deal with the union pledging none of its employees would be laid off for the following two years.

Two months later, Quinn was elected governor.

Considering his razor-thin victory that year over state Sen. Bill Brady, it’s almost certain Quinn would not have prevailed in that election without AFSCME’s support.

And the governor’s office alone is responsible for negotiating with AFSCME. In fact, in past years, even when the Legislature has refused to appropriate money for pay raises, the courts have ruled taxpayers are still on the hook if the governor promised them in negotiations. Between 2002 and 2014, government-worker unions combined pumped $47.5 million in the war chests of

And politicians kept upping their promises to these political contributors. It was more than the state could afford.

That’s one of the reasons why the state has a $111 billion unfunded pension liability.

But a strange thing happened last year. A candidate ran on a platform of taking on “union bosses.” The candidate, of course, was Bruce Rauner.

And now, he is in office. AFSCME leaders don’t like that.

The state is hurting, and Rauner wants state workers to pay more for their health insurance and make other concessions. It’s a common predicament in the private sector. When an employer’s revenues are down, employees share in the sacrifice.

On July 1, the union’s contract runs out. Most of the terms of the contract have been extended temporarily for one month. But the labor showdown is coming to a head.

Some sort of labor work stoppage may well be in the Prairie State’s future. In past administrations, Big Labor benefited from the power of governors to cut deals on their own.

With Rauner in office, that gubernatorial power doesn’t favor AFSCME. The union’s answer? Change the rules.

Now it wants an unelected outsider to have the final say.

Coming crisis of spending, national debt

A report released in June puts front and center an issue that few politicians – including presidential candidates – are discussing. Yet this issue dwarfs the significance of anything else that has overtaken the national conversation. We’re talking about federal spending and the national debt, which is now at $18 trillion.

Currently, the debt held by the public is at 74 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product. That is money borrowed on the open market from domestic and foreign investors and is owed back.

The rest of the national debt is internal debt, meaning it is money our government has borrowed from itself, such as when it raids Social Security’s trust fund. But that, too, is money collected from the public in the form of taxes with the promise that it will be there when needed.

Unless something changes, the national debt will exceed the gross domestic product by 2040, according to projections from the Con-

gressional Budget Office.

That may sound a long way off, but given that it has taken us decades to get into this mess, 25 years is a short time frame to make a difference.

One-third of that time – eight years – could be consumed by the next person elected president.

A recent Concord Coalition analysis determined: “Achieving the same level of debt relative to the economy by 2040 as we have now would require a $210 billion cut in spending or increase in revenues – about $1,450 per person – every year for 25 years from the levels assumed in current projections. To reduce the debt to its 50-year average (38 percent of GDP) would require a $480 billion cut in spending or increase in taxes every year.”

• By the end of the next president’s second term – should he or she have one – “the major health and retirement programs, along with interest on the debt, will account for over two-thirds

of total spending – up from 58 percent of spending in 2017.”

• “In 2017, when the next president takes office – the nation will spend $331 billion just in interest payments on that debt, an amount that grows to more than $800 billion by the end of the next president’s possible second term.”

Just so you know, the interest payment on all that debt will be more than the current federal spending on defense, education, transportation and medical research combined.

No matter where the candidates stand on other issues, none of it really will matter unless they can stand up to runaway federal spending. In the end, it’s even less about the candidate than it is about each of us. What choices, commitments and sacrifices are we willing to make in order to avoid the coming national debt crisis? Are we willing to demand that our next president make spending and debt the top priority?

North’s response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing at least four trumps and game-going values.

South employed Blackwood and jumped to seven spades when he knew that they had all of the aces and kings.

This was a tad aggressive because there could have been a late diamond loser.

At first, South would have his eye on these 13 tricks: five spades, two hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and one diamond ruff on the board. But after he wins the first trick with the heart ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand) and cashes the spade king, West’s discard makes that line much too dangerous – and it fails here.

Instead, declarer should cash his club king and play a club to dummy’s ace. When East follows suit, South is home.

He ruffs a club in his hand, plays a trump to the dummy, ruffs the last club, overtakes his final spade with the ace on the board, and draws East’s remaining trump, discarding one of his low diamonds.

Declarer takes four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and the two club ruffs in his hand. It is a textbook dummy reversal.

Mom’s health in pregnancy affects child’s health as adult Dear Dr. K: My husband and I are planning on having our first baby. I’ve been told that what I eat, and how much stress I have while I’m carrying the baby, could affect the baby’s health decades later.

That seems hard to believe. Is there any truth to it?

Dear Reader: It makes sense that a child’s nutrition and exercise during childhood might affect the child’s health as an adult. But it’s harder to imagine that your behavior and your health while you are pregnant could affect your child’s health for decades to come.

But over the past 35 years, many studies have found that a mother’s diet and stress levels can shape her child’s

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff health in middle age. The first discovery of this type was that children with low-normal birth weight were much more likely to die of heart disease when they became adults.

They also were more likely to get Type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. This seems counterintuitive: These diseases are normally associated with higher-than-normal weight.

But a mother’s poor nutrition during the pregnancy can cause low birth weight.

And it may lead to changes

in the baby’s development in the womb. For example, in mothers with poor nutrition during a pregnancy, even if the baby has a normal birth weight, the baby’s heart, kidneys and pancreas have fewer cells than those of most babies. Decades later, when those organs start to feel the stress of having worked hard for a long time, they may get sick easier.

Some experts believe that a mother’s nutritional status even in the years before she becomes pregnant may affect the future health of her child.

That’s because a woman’s eggs are formed many years before the ovary releases an egg to be fertilized.

How could a mother’s

nutrition, exercise and stress during her pregnancy leave a “mark” on her baby that causes an effect only decades later, when her child is an adult?

It’s not that these mother’s experiences cause harmful changes in some of her baby’s genes. Instead, these experiences can affect the tendency of the baby’s genes to be properly turned on and off. The effect on the child’s health takes decades to become obvious.

My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Matthew Gillman says a mother’s behavior during pregnancy, and in the months after the baby is born, can affect whether the child will be obese as an adult.

A child is much more likely to become obese as an

adult if the child’s mother smokes or gains excessive weight during pregnancy; breast feeds for fewer than 12 weeks; or if the child sleeps less than 12 hours per day during infancy.

The chance of a child being obese as an adult is seven times greater if all of these conditions are true, compared with if none of them are true.

So, hard as it may be to believe, your activities before and during the pregnancy, and in the months following birth, can affect your child’s health decades later.
