MORRIS – Having been the principal and superintendent of schools and districts 20 times the size of Nettle Creek School, I will reiterate Pete Pasteris’ comments when he left Nettle Creek three years ago – bigger doesn’t always mean better.

What has been developed and nurtured over the years at Nettle Creek School is something the entire Morris community should take great pride in. It’s not just the amazing test scores that make Nettle Creek such a special place; it’s the family feel that permeates everything we do.

We started this school year with a back-to-school pig roast. Nearly all of the Nettle Creek families attended. It was a wonderful way to say “welcome back” to another great school year. We plan to continue that as a tradition.

Recently we held a parent volunteer luncheon where the staff and I provided a potluck lunch for all of the parent volunteers who have helped in and out of the classroom throughout the school year.

Grundy Sheriff comes out on top in annual Gus Macker free throw contest

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As the sun beat down on the basketball court at the corner of Washington and Liberty streets Saturday, more than temperatures were rising.

As part of Morris’ annual Gus Macker basketball tournament, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland took on Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan in the third annual free-throw contest.

As they took to the court, each had one previous win under their belts in the freethrow contest. Saturday’s meeting between the two was set to break the tie between the pair.

At the end of 10 shots each, Callahan came out on top, shooting 50 percent and beating Helland by one basket.

“I really haven’t touched a ball since last year’s freethrow contest,” Callahan said after accepting his trophy.

Helland was quick to point out that although Callahan won the match, the two are still tied when it comes to percentage of free throws made over the three years they have competed. Both have made 50 percent.

“If you look at percentage, we’re dead even,” Helland said as he accepted the challenge to meet on the same court next year.

Callahan, who played basketball in school, said he never was good at free throws, but he’d gladly return to decide who the percentage winner is.

“Next year I’m going to practice a lot more, instead of taking my daughter to Disney,” Helland said.

After some light-hearted teasing, Callahan took his second trophy home for the day.

The tradition of the carnival is close to Doerfler’s heart: he said when he was kid, Morris volunteer firefighters would blanket the entire town to sell tickets.

“It was a big deal to go to the carnival after a little League game,” Doerfler said.

“Now families say ‘Let’s go to Six Flags Great America for a couple days and get a hotel.’ ” The community has always been supportive, Doerfler said, and it’s nice to see people in a friendly environment rather than during rescues.

“It’s a good time, especially for the kids,” Doerfler said.

“It’s a good way to keep your money local, see neighbors, maybe some people you haven’t seen in a while.”

Doerfler hopes people come out for a snowcone, a lemon shake-up and a good time.

MORRIS – If he knew how many years the Morris Firefighters Association’s Annual Carnival has been held, Association President Mark Doerfler would tell you.

“It’s been going on at least 40 years,” Doerfler said Friday. “It’s our only fundraiser.”

When the service became the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District and moved away from a completely volunteer department, it became a taxing body.

But funds raised still get put to use, Doerfler said, on uniforms, equipment, pickups and brush trucks for the department, as well as local organizations such as We Care of Grundy County and Operation St. Nick.

The Morris Firefighters Association Carnival takes place June 16 to 20 at the Morris Community High School parking lot.

Association member and co-chairman of the carnival, Shane Sader, said the carnival will be open 6 to 10 p.m. June 16 to 19 and 1 to 10 p.m. June 20.

Valdivia wins hot dog crown in tie-breaker Newcomer wins annual eating contest after much preparation

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It came down to a tie-breaking eat-off, but a newcomer won Friday’s ninth annual Hot Dog Eating Contest sponsored by Grundy Bank and radio stations WCSJ/ WJDK. David Valdivia, eating on behalf of the Morris Community High School Soccer Booster Club, defeated Grundy County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Hrechko, who was eating on behalf of the Grundy County Explorers.

Both competitors scarfed down three hot dogs in the two-minute time frame, forcing overtime on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn.

Valdivia, the first to eat a fourth hot dog, was named the winner.

He watched YouTube videos of legendary competitive hot dog eaters and developed a winning strategy of eating the bun separate from the dog, and dunking the bun in water.

In the end, Valdivia held up the 2015 trophy with a model hot dog sitting atop it, along with a heavyweight championship belt.

“It feels good to win,” he said. “I do not like to lose, but I’m actually glad it came to a tie. Any time I enter a new competitive arena, I study and prepare for it.”

Iron Dog Motorcycle Club fills the pantry MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County received 5,640 pounds of food and a dose of “street cred,” both provided by the Iron Dog Motorcycle Club.

The club donated $750 to help We Care purchase the food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves on May 22, according to a news release from the organization.

“This was the first time the Iron Dog Motorcycle Club sponsored a Fill the Pantry date,” then-executive director Denise Gaska said in the news release. “And they finished the work in record time. They were a fun bunch of guys with big hearts, and they already signed up to sponsor a Fill the Pantry next May, too.”

Gaska has since left We Care, and its new executive director is Eric Fisher.

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 270 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Coe College student Marissa Seamon, a 2012 graduate of Minooka High School, recently participated in Coe’s 15th Annual Student Research Symposium. Seamon is the daughter of Peter and Michelle Seamon. The symposium presentations, which range from academic research to artistic display and performance, are the culmination of work done by students over the past academic year. The featured work represented in the symposium is the result of honors projects, student participation in ongoing professional research programs and the cumulative product of an undergraduate career of achievement in the arts.

The symposium followed a format similar to that of a professional conference. There were panels in which students presented papers and a poster session where students displayed and discussed the results of their work.

In May 1957, Raymundo graduated from the ROTC program at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas and was commissioned a second lieutenant of the field artillery in the United States Army. Serving his beloved country proudly for 20 years, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1979. LTC Raymundo R. Luna was awarded two Bronze Stars after completing two tours of duty in Vietnam 1965 - 1966 with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) and 1971-1972 with the 54th General Support Group.

Other medals and commendations include Parachutist Badge, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

After Colonel Luna retired he spent time as an Equal Opportunity Specialist with a Federal Government Agency in Chicago. Then was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an Equal Opportunity Officer, and in 1985 became a lawyer after passing the Illinois State Bar Exam. Raymundo later joined the Illinois Department of Human Rights as Staff Attorney, climbing to the position of Chief Legal Counsel for a period of eight years and retiring in 2011 at the age of 78.

Having been deeply devoted to his family, his faith and his country, Raymundo will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfa-

ther as well as a loyal friend and neighbor. He will truly be missed by his family and the community in which he lived.

John Derr, longtime golf journalist, dies at age 97 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PINEHURST, N.C. – John Derr, who reported from the Masters a record 62 times and broadcast from the 15th green when it first was on TV, died of an apparent heart attack, his daughter said Sunday. He was 97.

Cricket Gentry said her father watched American Pharoah win the Belmont Stakes to capture the Triple Crown. She went to his house after the race Saturday eve-

ning and found him in his chair in front of the TV. “It was like he had stood up and said, ‘Hooray!’ and then fell over,” said Gentry, a paramedic for 40 years.

The manner of his death in some respects defined his life.

Derr was there for so many big moments, starting with his first Masters in 1935. His life spanned all 12 of the Triple Crown winners.

According to Golf Digest, he was a 17-year-old reporter for the Gaston Gazette when

he went to a college football game and sat next to O.B. Keeler, who suggested he attend a spring tournament at Augusta National hosted by Bobby Jones. Derr went to the 1935 Masters, the year Gene Sarazen made his famous albatross on the par-5 15th hole, a shot that put the Masters on the map. He was working for CBS Radio went he went to Carnoustie in 1953 as Ben Hogan won his only British Open to complete the Grand Slam.

Along the way, he forged re-

lationships with some of golf’s giants – Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson – along with running into the likes of Mahatma Ghandi, Albert Einstein and Henry Ford.

Derr was interviewed by Golf Digest four years ago when he told of seeing Einstein taking his daily walk along the golf course at Princeton.

He asked Einstein if he had ever played the game and the genius told him, “I tried once.

Too complicated.”

Derr was part of the CBS

team when the Masters was televised for the first time in 1956. He broadcast from the 15th green and kept that job through 1982.

His daughter said Derr suffered a major heart attack while working the Greater Greensboro Open in 1969, and then another heart attack while hospitalized.

“He had a near death experience,” she said. “They revived him and he told me, ‘I have no fear of death. I’ve been there and back, and it’s beautiful.’ ”

Despite rain, Macker delivers excitement

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Sunday morning, the rains were coming down.

That didn’t deter many basketball players from gathering in downtown Morris for the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Tournament. The play pressed on between downpours, and while it may not have been ideal conditions, the players still enjoyed themselves.

“It was a lot more fun today than yesterday,” said 8-yearold Griffin Zweeres of Morris, a member of the Runnin’ Renegades. “It was fun playing in the rain, and it wasn’t as hot.

The ball was slippery. That made it harder to play.”

The rules were tweaked, as the games went to 10 points instead of 15, and the next games started immediately after the previous ones rather than allowing any warmup time. If neither team got to 10, whichever team was leading at the end of 15 minutes was declared the winner.

As usual for Gus Macker events, normal field goals counted for one point and anything beyond what is usually the 3-point line counted for two points. On a shooting foul, the player could choose to attempt a two-point shot, and his or her team would get the ball.

Fans of area basketball this past winter were in for a treat, as reigning Morris Herald-News Players of the Year Austin Patterson and Julie Jurasits were playing, as well as plenty of other area standouts.

From last year’s Morris boys varsity team, Griffin Sobol, Jacob Brady, Evan Bjelland, Jordan Miracle, Jackson Shannon and Jake Jurasits were on hand, while Leona Burton, Mya Shannon, Jessica Ponce and Jessica Jurak were among the Morris girls players on the courts. Minooka’s Joe Butler and Jonny Butler went from playing in Saturday’s baseball sectional championship game to playing hoops in the streets on Sunday.

In the championship game for Court L, the team of Morris’ Patterson, Sobol and Chase Hansen took on a team of players from Dwight. Before that, however, Jacob Brady hit a two-pointer at the buzzer on

the neighboring court to send his team into the finals. Other members of that team were Robbie Meucci and Logan Ault. Dwight took a quick 1-0 lead in the Court L title game before Patterson tied it.

two baskets for Team Hansen to make it a tie game at 3 before Hansen gave his team a 4-3 lead. Dwight then rallied to take a 7-4 lead before Patterson hit two straight two-pointers to put Team Hansen ahead, 8-7. Dwight tied it at 8 before Patterson made it 9-8. Dwight missed a shot and Team Hansen got the rebound, needing just a basket to win.

With Dwight sending two of its defenders to Patterson, he found Hansen under the basket, who passed to a wide open Sobol, who put in the winning shot.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGTON – Two of the three phases for Minooka on Saturday were capable of a win, as the pitching of Joe Butler, Miguel Ruiz and Brad Van Asdlen was solid. The defense as a whole for the Indians kept them in the game as they turned a pair of double plays.

To win a baseball game and in postseason especially, all parts of the game – pitching, offense and defense – must be working together.

In some games a potent offense can overcome deficiencies in pitching and defense, in others a strong pitching performance can offset a weaker offensive. But when two evenly matched teams are pitted against each other, the team that can best combine the three will usually come out ahead.

Ironically it was the offense, which was the impetus behind Wednesday’s sectional semifinal win over Normal West, that fell short against O’Fallon.

After losing, 6-5, to the Indians Wednesday, Normal West coach Chris Hawkins called Minooka “probably the best hitting team we have faced all year.”

In that game he was probably right. The Indians got at least one hit in every inning and finished with 10 hits. Included were a pair of home runs by Jon Vesper, a triple

by Cristian Sanchez and a double by Tyler Paulsen. Not only were the Indians getting hits, they were getting extra bases. Plus, they only struck out once.

Those numbers turned around Saturday in a 6-0 loss to O’Fallon. Most of that was because of the performance of O’Fallon pitcher Brad Harrison. The big left-hander mixed an above-average fastball with a devastating slider that was nearly impossible to pick up.

On top of that, he had pinpoint control in never walking a batter.

Minooka, which finished with a 23-14 record and won 20 of its last 24 games, had several

Hayden Laczynski led off the first inning by reaching on an error and Jake Null took Harrison to a full count before flying out to right. Harrison struck out the next two hitters to get out of the inning.

In the second, Cole Thompson singled with two outs, but Harrison ended the inning with strikeout.

The best chance for Minooka came in the third, when Jonny Butler led off with an opposite-field double to left-center. After a strikeout, Null bounced a ball in front of the plate and the O’Fallon catcher could not pick it up, putting runners on first and third with one out. A Harrison pitch went in the dirt, allowing Null to reach second, but Harrison got a strikeout and a comebacker to get out of the inning.

Unfortunately for Minooka, that was their last baserunner, as Harrison struck out the next six Indians in the fourth and fifth innings. A ground

out and two fly outs comprised the sixth and a comebacker, a strikeout and a fly to right finished the Indians off in the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Minooka pitching and defense kept the game close. In the third inning, O’Fallon started off with two straight hits, but a grounder up the middle turned into a double play when shortstop Laczynski fielded the grounder, stepped on second and threw the batter out at first.

In the sixth, a Minooka error

and a wild pitch put a runner at third with one out.

The next batter flew to Paulsen in right, and the strong-armed senior threw out the runner trying to score for another double play.

“In high school baseball, you try to eliminate giving up extra bases and strikeouts,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “We gave away too many extra bases on defense today, and we had way too many strikeouts (12). This was not a Minooka-looking game. We

were able to turn a couple of nice double plays, though.

Hayden made a good play up the middle and Tyler threw the kid out at the plate.

“For a long time, we kind of expected to be here. We’ve been on a two-year hiatus, so these kids haven’t felt that pressure. The good thing is that the ones that are coming back know what it feels like now, both to get here and to lose. Hopefully, that will make them want to get here next year that much more.”

Schuler wins second straight late-model feature STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – On Friday night at Grundy County Speedway, Larry Schuler wore a broad smile after winning his second consecutive late-model feature.

Schuler took the lead from Scott Koerner on lap 16 of the 30-lap event, and checked out on the 16-car field. He beat David Einhaus to the finish line by 1.791 seconds.

The win is pending a midweek ruling by track officials on the legality of his manifold.

Koerner was looking in good shape until a yellow flag on Lap 9 tightened the field.

That allowed Schuler to gain

spots for the double-file restart, and it didn’t take long before he was able to draw up to the leader.

His passing lane of choice was the bottom, and he executed smoothly in Turn 1.

The biggest mover in the race was Einhaus, who came from the middle of the pack to take second place away from Koerner on lap 21. He wasn’t catching Schuler, but that didn’t erase the smile he had on his face after his best finish in a late-model race.

Well behind Einhaus, John Nutley captured third by a close margin over Eddie Hoffman. Koerner was fifth, followed by Brandon Clubb,

Chris Cooling, Nathan Kelly, Jim Weber and James Gregait.

In the Mid-American feature, Kevin Gentile caught leader John Ventrello quickly, but took a handful of laps before making his move. Once he did, he was gone.

Ventrello held on for second, while Chuck Yuris, Joe Vinachi, Jeff Olson and Matt Clemens completed the top six.

Seth Blommaert was a firsttime winner in the street stock class, taking the lead from Darrell Gay on Lap 7 and holding off points leader Christy Penrod at the finish. Jake Bradley was third, followed by Rita Fields, Tim Stewart and Cheryl Hryn.

The Hawks’ thin defensive corps has created an over-anticipation of the rookie’s return to the lineup since he re-joined the team on May 22.

The 23-year-old van Riemsdyk played only 18 games with the Hawks when he suffered a knee injury on Nov. 16.

But with David Rundblad (7:48) and Kyle Cumiskey (5:08) combining for 12:56 of ice-time in Game 2, even a rusty van Riemsdyk might be worth a shot. He averaged 16:07 of ice time in his final seven games before he suffered the knee injury.

If she is president, who makes Hillary obey law?

Last year, before Hillary Clinton’s secret email system became publicly known, Congress passed a law to keep presidents from trying the same trick. If Clinton wins the White House, the law could well be put to the test.

The statute is the Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014. It recognizes that government officials sometimes (or in Clinton’s case, all the time) want to use private email accounts – in the words of the law, “non-official electronic messaging accounts” – to conduct government business.

“The President, the Vice President, or a covered employee may not create or send a Presidential or Vice Presidential record using a non-official electronic message account unless the President, Vice President, or covered employee (1) copies an official electronic messaging account of the President, Vice President, or covered employee in the original creation or transmission of the Presidential record or Vice Presidential record; or (2) forwards a complete copy of the Presidential or Vice Presidential record to an official electronic messaging account of the President, Vice President, or covered employee not later than 20 days after the original creation or transmission of the Presidential or Vice Presidential record.”

That’s pretty clear. All presidential communications must be preserved in a timely fashion. The next paragraph of the law stipulates that federal employees who intentionally violate the Presidential Records Act are subject to “disciplinary action” as determined by the “appropriate supervisor.” Such punishments can include suspensions and cuts in pay and rank. None of that, of course, applies to the

As far as the chief executive is concerned, there’s no enforcement mechanism in the law.

The Records Act gives the president entirely appropriate discretion to control the disposition of his or her records not only in the White House but for a number of years after.

There are plenty of areas – personnel decisions, for example – in which a former president might not want sensitive documents released for a long time. Within limits, it is the president who makes those decisions. But that’s assuming records are kept at all in some way that federal officials have access to them. The lesson of the Clinton email affair is that Hillary Clinton is inclined to set up secret, tightly limited and carefully controlled systems that are outside the reach of federal officials.

When Congress expressed an interest in examining Clinton’s server, her personal attorney told lawmakers to forget about it – the whole thing, backups included, had been erased. What would happen in an entirely plausible scenario in which Clinton did something similar in the White House? After all, a President Hillary Clinton would have far more power to set up a secretive system of communications than a Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Compliance with the Presidential Records Act is not exactly the most critical issue facing voters in 2016. But as far as Hillary Clinton is concerned, it could be a harbinger of bigger problems to come.

Here, the king appears, so South draws trumps, crosses to dummy’s club ace, and discards his second club on the diamond queen. But if the diamond king does not drop, declarer runs his trumps, planning to fall back on the club finesse.

Yes, a club shift at trick four by West would have been fatal, but that was not obvious.

Raising blood pressure first priority in treating shock Dear Dr. K: What does it mean when someone “goes into shock”?

Dear Reader: Shock occurs when there is not enough blood flowing through the body to supply the oxygen and nutrients your cells need to survive.

People who go into shock can develop organ damage – or even die – if the condition is not treated promptly.

Shock results from extremely low blood pressure, which can result from many different causes.

Low blood pressure may be brought on by a heart problem.

A serious heart rhythm abnormality, for example, keeps the heart from forcefully pumping enough oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. So can a

Low blood pressure also can be caused by severe dehydration, which may result from prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or by not drinking enough fluids. This lessens the amount of fluid in the blood, which affects blood pressure.

Another cause of low blood pressure is heavy bleeding.

Blood loss significant enough to cause shock can follow a severe injury, or it may be the result of bleeding from the stomach or intestines.

However it happens, just as with severe dehydration, the amount of fluid in the blood vessels drops – and with it, blood pressure.

Shock quickly can develop from chemicals produced by severe infections or a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

The chemicals cause blood vessel walls to become leaky; fluid leaves the blood to go elsewhere in the body. With less fluid, blood pressure drops.

A person is considered to be in shock when he or she has low blood pressure and certain symptoms.

These symptoms indicate there is not enough blood flowing through the body to supply the brain and other

organs. Symptoms of shock can include: • Mental confusion • Anxiety or agitation/restlessness • Bluish lips and fingernails • Chest pain • Dizziness, lightheadedness or faintness • Pale, cool, clammy skin • Low or no urine output • Profuse sweating, moist skin • Rapid but weak pulse • Shallow breathing • Unconsciousness Shock requires emergency medical treatment.

The first priority is to get blood pressure back up to normal. This may be done by giving blood and fluids through a vein.

Blood-pressure-raising medicines may be administered.

They work by narrowing the small arteries or by strengthening the pumping action of the heart.

Anti-shock trousers can help.

They squeeze blood from the legs into the heart. Doctors also will give extra oxygen through a mask.

Once blood pressure is back to normal, doctors will shift their focus to treating whatever led to shock in the first place.
