CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Two 21-year-olds were killed early Thursday when their car struck the back of a semitrailer on Interstate 55 in Channahon Township.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said the crash occurred at 1:01 a.m. in the northbound lanes near milepost 247 – between Route 6 and Bluff Road.

Tyler Fox, of Channahon, and Darcy Chobar, of Shorewood, were pronounced dead at the scene by a Will County deputy coroner about an hour after the crash, according to reports. The truck driver, Carlos Ward, 56, of Robbins, was not injured.

Rivera said the crash is under investigation, but Ward does not appear to have been at fault and was not cited.

“There are no initial indications drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash,” Rivera said. State police reports say Fox and Chobar were not wearing seat belts.

Sheriff’s police notified other agencies, and the car was spotted by Grundy County and Morris police. They pulled the brothers over and surrounded the car on Oakland Circle in Morris, guns drawn, and put them in the back of squad cars, according to an eyewitness.

Will County sheriff’s police met Grundy officers at Ridge Road and Route 6 to take the suspects into custody. The suspects’ car was towed to the Morris police station until it could be turned over to Will County investigators.

The Milashoski brothers, both of whom reside in the 500 block of Twilight Drive in Morris, were booked into the Will County jail on charges of robbery.

An acquaintance of Chobar’s family said Fox and Chobar were dating.

Fox’s Facebook page indicated he attended Illinois State University.

“He worked here until he left for college [about] three years ago and would return on [school] breaks,” an employee at Babe’s Hot Dogs in Joliet said Thursday. “He was very helpful. The owner loved him.”

Chobar’s Facebook page indicated she attended Minooka Community High School and DePaul University and worked at Stout Barrel House and Galley, a Chicago restaurant.

Rock and roll concert starts series of free gatherings outside courthouse in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Warm summer temperatures and the sounds of original rock and roll brought dozens of people to the courthouse lawn Thursday night for the opening night of the Morris Summer Concert Series.

The Neverly Brothers took listeners on a journey down musical memory lane as they took a self-described road trip from the rockabilly era of the 1950s to the 1960s British invasion.

“We’re so proud of what this has become,” said Delight Belt, who organized the original event with her husband, Jerry, before handing it over to the city of Morris. “People come because it takes you back to a different time.”

The lawn was filled with lawn chairs and blankets as people sat, feet bouncing and heads bopping as they listened to the music of their youth.

Rose Adams of Joliet sat in her chair singing along to Elvis as she closed her eyes.

“It takes me back to high school,” she said. “If I knew then how good it was, and how far we would come, I might not have been in such a rush to get through it.”

Adams said she found out about the concert through a friend who follows the Neverly Brothers to many of their shows. She couldn’t believe that the city would provide

on a trip from Memphis, Tennessee, to England and back as they sang songs by Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and the Beatles.

Pam and Bob Monkemeyer of Newark couldn’t stay in their chairs for long and they quickly turned the sidewalk leading to the courthouse into

their own personal dance floor as they twirled and laughed.

“We love it,” Pam Monkemeyer said of the summer concert series. “In the great summer weather, there is nothing better than enjoying a night out.”

The couple said they’ve been coming for the past couple of years after learning about the series at another Neverly Brothers show.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick welcomed the crowd to the beginning of the 15th season of live entertainment and thanked them for coming.

“It’s been a great event, it brings people to downtown

Morris and shows them all we have to offer,” Kopczick said.

“A lot of them stop at local restaurants and grab dinner and enjoy it while listening to the music.”

The event is free to the public. It is paid for by the city of Morris with the cooperation of the Grundy County Sheriff’s office, which allows the city to use the courthouse lawn.

Those planning on attending should bring lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather – be it rain, high heat or high humidity – Kopczick said the concert will be held in the auditorium at Morris Community High School.

Gus Macker will hit the streets this weekend

The streets of downtown Morris will be no exception this year when the 13th annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament takes place.

This year’s courts will find many local residents and agencies battling it out for bragging rights.

Battle of the Badges will pit Morris police against Grundy County sheriff’s deputies.

“My prediction is that it will be a fun and entertaining game,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said. “I can predict with two-to-one odds that we will either win or lose.”

Finance committee suggests renewing insurance plan

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – City of Morris employees are covered by an amazingly rich insurance plan that isn’t offered anymore, Blue Cross Blue Shield Account Executive Alex Edwards said to the Morris Finance and Administration Committee on Thursday.

Aldermen Duane Wolfe and Bill Martin, City Clerk Carol Adair, Deputy Treasurer and Human Resources Administrator Daria Lynes and Mayor Richard Kopczick attended the meeting with Edwards.

Because the coverage plan was grandfathered in, the committee is recommending to the City Council that it approve a one-year renewal of the insurance plan, which would include a 5 percent increase on the premium.

“I think as long as we can afford it, we should do it,” Martin said.

The coverage is even more precious, as the Affordable

Care Act’s “Cadillac Tax” waits in the wings.

“Imagine what this plan would look like if the Cadillac Tax comes to pass,” Edwards said to the committee.

“It hasn’t hit people yet, the widespread problems it could create.”

For taxable years beginning in 2018, the ACA imposes a 40 percent excise tax on high-cost group health coverage.

This tax is intended to encourage companies to choose lower-cost health plans for their employees, according to National Insurance Services Inc. “The ACA is the biggest gorilla in the room, with so many variables,” Kopczick said. “We do not want to end up triggering the Cadillac Tax in a few years.”

The Cadillac Tax provision taxes the amount, if any, by which the monthly cost of an employee’s applicable employer-sponsored health coverage exceeds the annual limitation.

The amount of the tax for each employee’s coverage will be calculated by the employer and paid by the coverage provider that supplies the coverage, according to National Insurance Services.

“The insurance industry is changing,” Kopczick said.

“We will have to change as the ACA kicks in.”

In the meantime, Kopczick said the city will continue to pursue the best affordable plan for its employees, but it will not pay the 40 percent Cadillac Tax. “Once you lose this plan, it’s gone,” Edwards said.

In other business, the committee recommended approval of a contract to hire CPA William Crawford as a third-party independent auditor for the fiscal 2014-15 budget. The Morris City Council will vote on it June 15.

The committee also recommended the council approve a contract with ACE Pyro to perform the city’s annual July 3 fireworks display.

8 Construction on Route 6 to begin soon 3-on-3 competition raises

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Those using the Route 6 interchange at Interstate 55 in Channahon should expect some delays in the coming months, as a major construction project is expected to begin within the next two weeks. Residents, business owners and others who use the exchange took advantage of an Illinois Department of Transportation open house Wednesday at Channahon Village Hall to learn more about the project and what they can expect of the construction congestion.

The two-and-a-half year construction project will involve replacement of the Route 6 overpass bridge deck and eventually a reconfiguration of three of the four frontage roads at the interchange. The bridge construction should be completed by November 2016, IDOT engineer Sami Daniel said.

The frontage roads project is expected to begin in the spring and be completed by October 2017. Congestion and backups are expected for a while, but Village President Missey Schumacher said the upgrades are needed.

“It’s a safety issue,” she said.

“The structure of that bridge is in very bad repair. It will also be widened and have longer lanes for truck stacking.”

Another reason for the construction is research found the traffic volume at the exchange is expected to increase by 42 percent by 2040.

“The traffic volumes far exceed the two lanes we have now,” Channahon’s Director of Public Works Ed Dolezal said.

One lane will be left open for traffic during the construction, Dolezal said, which likely will lead to some bottlenecks.

Village officials hope the frontage road re-route will address traffic problems at the Pilot Travel Center on Route 6 just east of the interstate.

Truck drivers are not allowed to turn left from the station to return to the interstate, a measure enacted after traffic jams at the site. Residents complained that trucks would snake out onto Route 6 from the station and block traffic. When the southeast frontage road is re-aligned, it will run along the east side of the Pilot station and have a signal at Route 6.

house to discuss the traffic flow changes around his restaurant.

“I think it’s overall a good thing,” he said. “My concern is that I want to make sure my entrance stays open.”

Carnagio said he was assured it would and when the project is complete, his southwest frontage road will align with the northwest frontage road and have a traffic signal.

Minooka resident George Rydman said he regularly enters I-55 from Channahon, but he has been going a little out of his way to use the Bluff Road entrance, south of Route 6, because of the traffic backups.

“It looks OK,” he said of the construction plans. “Nothing unexpected as far as configurations. ... I’m going to stay away.”

Schumacher said the changes will provide a more welcoming “front door” for Channahon and easier access to the community for residents and visitors.

“It will be congested, and people may need to consider alternative routes for a while,” she said. “I can’t sugarcoat that in any way. But we ask that our residents be patient and keep their eye on the prize because it will vastly improve this area.”

Francis also scored 116 points against Kentucky’s Ashland Junior College in 1953, a record that was retroactively erased after the NCAA announced it would only recognize games played against four-year, degree-granting institutions.

JOLIET – NAMI Will-Grundy, the local NAMI Affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer its free NAMI basics education course for parents and caregivers of children and teens with emotional and behavioral difficulties, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Joliet.

Registration is required.

Trained teachers who are themselves the parents or other caregivers of individuals who developed emotional and behavioral difficulties before the age of 13 lead the course.

The two and a half hour classes are offered once a week for six weeks. The course gives parents and other caregivers basic information necessary to take the best care possible of their child, as well as the rest of their family and themselves.

NAMI basics provides tools for the parent and family caregiver to use even after completing the program that will assist them in making the best decisions possible for the care of the child.

When paying bills, explain the options of paying by writing a check, using electronic systems, or the telephone. “Discuss how each method of bill pay deducts money from your account.”

Cadot emphasizes, “Make sure to cover late penalties, and the importance and value of paying bills on time.”

She continues, “Explain credit cards, and how they are loans that need to be repaid.

Share how each month a credit card statement comes in the mail with a bill. Discuss features of credit, debit, and ATM cards.”

OPINION (Murder) mysteries in Amish country The new guy in the town of Millersburg, Ohio, one David Hawkins, wasn’t just a U.S. Army veteran, but a skilled sniper and Special Forces operative.

Then his only daughter was murdered by an ex-con, followed by another murder clearly linked to the case.

Obviously, the sheriff had to investigate whether the shattered father was planning his revenge before the ex-con’s trial.

That’s the setup for “Broken English,” one of nine murder mysteries – so far – by author P.L. Gaus. But there’s a twist, because these stories unfold in Holmes County, Ohio – in Amish country.

The Hawkins character has vowed to live as a pacifist, while preparing to marry an Amish woman and embrace her faith.

In these books – the latest, “Whiskers of the Lion,” arrived this spring – the fine points of Amish doctrine and culture provide more than colorful frames around the plots; they also add crucial details that complicate them.

To be blunt: The Amish believe it’s spiritually dangerous to mix with “English” locals, even if that means not cooperating with authorities investigating crimes in which their loved ones are the victims, stressed Gaus.

What if the state’s idea of justice is little more than sinful human vengeance?

Amish life is further complicated by myriad internal splits over the centuries.

One Gaus character notes: “At the simplest level ... we have the most conservative Old Order Amish, what you might call House Amish, then Beachy Amish, Church Amish, Swiss Mennonites, Old Mennonites, Wisler

New schisms keep happening. There are Amish who use pins to fasten their clothing, while rejecting those who accept buttons. Some hide cellphones, while others have telephone lines to sheds outside their houses.

Splits may form over issues as innocent as glass windows in horse-drawn buggies or as serious as whether to seek professional help for genetic disorders or mental illness.

The modern world keeps crossing their borders. In one Gaus mystery, Amish girls are forced – using death threats against family members – to carry suitcases of cocaine while traveling on buses from Florida.

In another, a prodigal who fled his Amish family repents and begins the return journey, only to be murdered in sight of home by someone linked to the sins of his wild years.

In another, an Amish entrepreneur schemes to sell land to greedy mega-mansion developers, with tragic results. The “English” are seeking peace – for sale. It seems, explained Gaus, that they “think visiting Amish country allows them to have a connection to that simplicity of life they want to believe is somewhere in their past.

Preparing for nursing shortage A nurse’s role is never really appreciated until you or a loved one needs one. And everyone needs one sooner or later, usually more than once.

Which is why it is a little alarming to read a nursing shortage is looming. According to the 2014 Illinois Registered Nurse Survey, of the nearly 53,000 nurses surveyed, 40 percent were age 55 or older. Of that group, one-third intend to retire within the next five years, leaving voids in specialties such as psychiatric, school, home health and community care, according to the state agency.

Need a job? Can’t decide what to do after high school?

Looks like a nursing career could be lucrative and secure.

The good news is that

it appears health care and education leaders locally are prepared to educate and train a new crop of nurses as experienced ones leave.

Ensuring there are enough nurses to meet the state’s health care needs is a priority for Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, hospital spokeswoman Janet Long said.

The Morris hospital remains aware of specialties at the hospital – critical care and surgery – where there’s a significant percentage of nurses nearing retirement age. And the hospital has historically offered scholarships, not only to students pursuing nursing degrees, but to those entering the health care industry in general, Long added.

“We try to encourage more people into this field,”

she said.

Jane Trainor, assistant professor and coordinator of one of Lewis University’s accelerated nursing degree programs, said Lewis offers a wide range of options for nursing degrees, with rolling enrollment.

Trainor said the university offers an accelerated bachelor’s-to-BSN program designed for students with a bachelor’s degree considering a career change.

Students can obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing in as little as 18 months, Trainor said.

A nursing career won’t be for everyone. But it is a need, and the profession can be rewarding. There’s a path locally to enter the field, and we encourage those who are considering it to take that next step.

Changes power Minooka hot streak

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com In April, if anyone made a list of high school baseball teams they thought would be playing for a sectional championship in June, Minooka most likely would not have been the top choice.

The Indians sputtered out of the gate and were the not-soproud owners of a 3-10 record.

There were injuries, illnesses and the team had not played as a unit.

Since then, injuries have healed, tweaks to the lineup have been made and, most importantly, the team concept has taken hold. Since that uncharacteristic start, Minooka has won 20 of its past 23 games, including 13 in a row heading into Saturday’s Class 4A Illinois Wesleyan Sectional championship game at 11 a.m. against O’Fallon.

Wednesday’s 6-5 win over Normal Community West in the sectional semifinal was a model example. Yes, most of the accolades go to Jon Vesper, who hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam and drove in five of the six runs.

But the Indians weren’t just waiting for Vesper to come to bat and save them. They had at least one hit in every inning and with a little luck could have had a bigger lead in the early innings.

In the top of the first, Hayden Laczynski led off the game with a grounder to short. The throw was high and went out of play, allowing Laczynski to reach second.

Jake Null laid down a bunt to third and beat it out. The throw was low and bounced away from the Normal West first baseman. Laczynski, who had rounded third aggressively, took off for home, but was called out on a close play. On the play at home, Null went to second. That brought up Georgetown-bound Cristian Sanchez, a line drive-hitting machine. Sanchez didn’t disappoint and smoked a liner up the middle that appeared destined to drive in Null. However, the Normal West second baseman had been holding Null on second and was in the

“That first inning, we were a few inches from a couple of runs,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “I thought Hayden got under the tag at home, and then Cristian hits a laser up the middle, but their second baseman was still there from holding the runner on.”

With one out in the second, Tyler Paulsen doubled to left-center and went to third when the left fielder had trouble picking up the ball at the base of the fence. He was stranded there, however, because the precedent had been set. Minooka was going to hit.

“That’s as good a hitting team as we faced all year,” Normal West coach Chris Hawkins said.

Minooka finally broke the ice in the third. With two outs, Null was hit by a pitch and came around to score when Sanchez tripled to left-center.

The fourth-inning rally came after Vesper led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer. In his first at-bat, he turned a little too quickly on a Peyton Dillingham offering and sent it well beyond the leftfield fence, but in foul territory. Early in his fourth-inning at-bat, he did the same thing.

He changed his approach a bit and sent one over the fence in fair territory to pull the Indians to within 3-2.

After Normal West went up 5-2, Vesper and the Indians struck again. With one out in the top of the fifth, Sanchez started things with a line drive single to left. Nick Petrak fol-

lowed with a single to right and Paulsen singled hard to left to load the bases. That ended Dillingham’s day and brought in Nick Bronson. Vesper gave Bronson an unwelcome greeting by hitting a 1-2 pitch over the 355-foot sign in left-center.

“After those two long fouls, I was just trying to hit the ball to right,” Vepser said. “Our coaches preach hitting it the other way, so that’s what I tried to do. I got lucky and put two perfect swings on them.

“We were 3-10 and strug-

gling, but then everyone decided to play as a team. At the beginning of the year, it was all Cristian, Cristian, Cristian, and we were waiting for him to do something. Now, everyone in the lineup, one through nine, is coming through for us.

At this time of the year, that’s what we need.”

Armed with the lead, Ruiz, who improved to 9-3, got West out in order in the bottom of the fifth. He hit the leadoff batter to lead off the sixth, and Joe Butler came on to pitch. A bunt and a grounder to third moved the runner to third and the next batter was hit by a pitch and stole second. Butler struck out the next batter, then fanned the side in the seventh to preserve the win.

“Joe was hurt at the start of the year, and he hasn’t pitched much for us,” Petrovic said. “It speaks volumes for what we feel about his guts, his competitiveness and his athleticism.

He’s a guy you trust, for sure.

“At the beginning of the year, we would find a way to lose a game like this. Now, we are finding ways to win them.

It’s an attitude, and it’s infectious.”

Things change. Fads come and go. Every industry across this land witnesses trends born from nowhere, take charge, and then seemingly vanish into history. The fishing industry has seen numerous changes over the past century, especially within the highly competitive lure manufacturing business.

Many of us own dozens of baits that sit at the bottom of our tackle box, frozen in time, patiently waiting for the next opportunity to be used.

Some have waited for decades, crying out, and begging to be tied on. Their finish is faded, the colors are out-of-date, and that eye-catching sparkle is gone. Yet each of them hold something in common, they still catch fish.

One of my favorite lures from my childhood is the Arbogast Jitterbug. I know that many of you reading this are smiling at this very moment.

Ahh, yes, the Jitterbug. This gangly, wide-mouthed, oddity had a knack for catching fish.

Lots of them. I remember the first time I saw my dad cast and retrieve one of these lures. It rippled across the lake, mesmerizing me.

Fred Arbogast was a lure carver from Akron, Ohio.

While employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, he started to carve out lures for himself and his friends. Before long, local tackle shops were asking him for lures to sell in their stores.

Arbogast soon realized he was on to something. In 1926, he resigned from Goodyear and began creating a niche in the fishing industry.

Two years later he founded the Fred Arbogast Company.

His first offering, believe it or not, wast not a wooden lure, but a metal creation he called the Spin-tail Kicker.

It became a success. Another major innovation that can be accredited to Arbogast was the idea to put a skirt on a bait.

The Hawaiian culture was quite the rage at the time this fledgling business was trying to get established. Arbogast put “hula” type skirts on some of his creations. I’m sure some of your brains are clicking right now thinking about the famous Hula Popper lure. The rest, as they say, is history.

You still can buy Arbogast lures today, such as the Jitterbug and the Hula Popper, but the company is owned by one of the giants in the lure industry, Pradco. Some of the product lines under the

Pradco umbrella include such other industry heavyweights as Bomber, Cotton Cordell, Heddon, Lindy and Rebel.

Each of these names recall images and industry changing products that still produce.

So then, why do these reliable lures take a backseat to the newer and flashier offerings?

There are many logical theories and reasons, but it really comes down to one thing. Money. To stay competitive, manufacturers across every industry need to pump out new products to entice consumers to buy them. Sure, these fishing companies are proud that you have a favorite lure in your tackle box, but they really need you buy a new one to keep their business doors open.

With so many anglers focusing on what is new, these traditional lures can offer something different the fish on your home water might not

have seen any time recently.

Different is good. The same sound, same motion, same wiggle, these all are things fish become conditioned to.

Your dog knows the sound of your car when it pulls into the driveway. I would sure think it would be logical to assume fish become conditioned to stimuli in their environment as well.

Why not throw their senses a curveball and pull out the old Jitterbug? Summertime is a great time to watch that crazy critter crawl across the calm surface of a lake.

With any luck, some hungry giant lurking in the depths will come and blast it. And if the paint gets chipped, go by another Arbogast creation and keep the wheels of fishing innovation turning forward.

Minooka 11U Rivercats win St. Charles tourney title STAFF REPORTS The Minooka 11U Rivercats baseball team won the championship of the Rumble at the East Side Tournament in St. Charles last weekend.

In the championship game, the Rivercats scored a 14-0 win over Joliet Victory, scoring eight runs in the first inning and six in the second.

In addition, the Rivercats pitching shut out a Victory team that had been averaging 11 runs a game.

Caleb Parker went 3 for 3 to lead the offense for Minooka, while Zac Monnett, Ivan Dahlbreg, Logan Crowther, Ryan Norman and Matthew Dailey all had two hits.

On the mound, starter Dahlberg pitching three innings, allowing only two hits and striking out five. Norman followed with a scoreless fourth as the Rivercats won the game by the run rule.

In the semifinals, the Rivercats upended Tinley Park, 13-5, scoring nine runs in the third and fourth innings.

Ethan Hocking went 3 for 3

with three RBIs for Minooka, while Parker and Dailey had two hits each.

One of Dailey’s was an RBI triple in the third inning.

Logan Crowther had an RBI double and scored three runs.

Catcher Dahlberg threw out two Tinley Park runners in the last inning.

Minooka opened pool play with a 6-2 win over the Glenview Diamond Dogs. Crowther pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing just three hits.

Parker led the offense wtih three hits and three runs scored. In pool play Friday, the Rivercats lost, 10-7, to the Plainfield 66ers.

Frankie Hummel was 3 for 3 to lead the offense for Minooka, while Monnett had two hits and three stolen bases. Tonny Kuhel had an RBI double, while Dahlberg had a two-run triple.
