By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Lost in the shuffle of controversy surrounding a vacant alderman seat and a proposed medical marijuana dispensary location, the Morris City Council approved other items Monday night.

Among the approvals was the purchase of a lot for additional parking in downtown Morris. The Finance and Administration Committee recommended the city enter a purchase contract for a parking lot at the northwest corner of Jackson and Franklin streets.

The purchase comes out of tax increment financing district funds and the city will pay $130,000 to the Wilson family, former owners and operators of Wilson Chevrolet, which once used the lot to show cars, Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday.

“It will benefit downtown retailers by providing additional parking, especially during a big event,” Kopczick said.

The city will add the lot to its parking ordinances regarding parking times and other uses.

On a recommendation by the Street and Alley Committee, the council unanimously authorized the city to seek bids for annual street maintenance, crack filling, striping and sidewalks projects.

Dates will be determined in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation.

City Engineer Guy Christensen said work will need to be approved after bids are gathered in order for improvements to begin.

• Shirley Carraro, 30, of Seneca, was arrested by LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies and taken to the LaSalle County Jail on Thursday on a charge of driving under the influence.

She also was cited for failure to signal and having no rear registration plate light.

• Kent H. Boe, 50, of Marseilles, was arrested by LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the LaSalle County Jail on Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for driving in the wrong lane and failure to dim headlights.

• Celso Sanchez, 22, of Minooka, was arrested by Minooka police Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence and unlawful use of a weapon. He also was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The same committee recommended, and the City Council approved, the purchase of a new street sweeper to replace the city’s current one, which is a 2001 model.

The cost is about $232,000 and will take 200 days to be delivered, as the company manufactures the sweepers as orders come.

This means the new street sweeper won’t be used until the weather breaks in 2016, Kopczick said.

Alderman Randy Larson said at the council meeting he wished he had time to research if there was a slightly used alternative at a lower cost.

The council also approved the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act Ordinance for fiscal 2015, which Kopczick said is required annually by state statute and keeps wage rates on a level playing field.

The Prevailing Wage Act governs the wages a contractor or subcontractor is required to pay to all laborers, workers and mechanics who perform work on public works projects.

They have sought out and started planning pilgrimages to holy sites in and around Illinois.

“We keep hearing younger ones say they have an interest in spirituality, but not organized religion,” the Rev. James Steele said. “So we started looking to perk something up.”

Steele, along with members Bob Carlson and Judy Adams, sat down with a map and started marking places to visit.

They looked at religious sites like Bishop Hill and Second Presbyterian Church in Chicago, and moved to the not-so-obvious locations like Brookfield Zoo, where they can share with children the spirituality of animals.

“Our main thoughts are we want to do something to involve the community, not just our church, no matter what faith,” Adams said.

Couple sues over fatal 2014 crash

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Channahon family has filed a lawsuit that alleges their daughter’s fatal May 2014 car crash was due to a major defect in the vehicle they purchased.

General Motors, D’Arcy Buick GMC Inc. of Joliet and Bolingbrook-based Manheim Remarketing Inc. have been named as defendants in the lawsuit, which was filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court.

In the lawsuit, the couple alleges Manheim, operating as Manheim Arena Illinois, did not properly install another part of the vehicle. General Motors was named in the suit as the car’s manufacturer and D’Arcy Buick because it is where the vehicle was purchased.

A little more than a week after graduating from Minooka Community High School, 18-year-old Madison Angus was driving a 2005 Pontiac G6 vehicle south near 23800 S. Canal Road in Channahon on May 26, 2014, when the car’s power steering assist failed, causing it to veer off the roadway and hit a tree, according to the lawsuit obtained through an attorney representing the family.

A month later, General Motors issued “Safety Recall 14116,” acknowledging a defect in the power steering assist, the lawsuit states.

“Madison was a beautiful 18-year-old girl,” said Robert Napleton, a Chicago attorney representing the family.

Bill could mean lower property taxes But will help elderly and veterans in Grundy County

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Assessor Stephanie Kennedy told the Grundy County Economic Development and Tax Committee on Wednesday that a bill has been approved by both the Senate and House that will affect what some veterans pay in property taxes.

“I received an email on Monday, June 1, about legislation,” Kennedy said. “I did research on it, and it is going to impact Grundy County.”

The Valuation of Accessibility Improvements; change in Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption, SB 0107 has been sent to the governor for signature.

The bill addresses both accessibility improvements for

persons with disabilities or elderly individuals, as well as exemptions for disabled veterans.

The bill changes the disability rating criteria for Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption, and will go into effect for the 2015 year if the governor signs it.

Kennedy said that previously, properties where veterans with a VA disability rating of 50 to 69 percent received a $2,500 homestead exemption unless the property had an EAV of $25,000 or more. With the new bill, those veterans will receive a $5,000 homestead exemption.

It also increased from a $5,000 exemption to a 100 percent exemption from property tax for those those with a disability rating of 70 to 100 percent, according to the VA, on properties of up to $250,000.

The bill also adds a new exemption for those with a disability rating of 30-49 percent who will now receive a $2,500

exemption.

“It’s great for the veterans,” board member Debra Warning said after the meeting.

Kennedy said in 2014, 61 households received the $5,000 exemption, which will now be the 100 percent exemption.

This could mean about $24,000 less to the county, and significantly greater losses to the schools.

“It will be a huge impact for the schools and I have concerns for them,” Warning said.

“I don’t have concerns for the county. We can make adjustments.”

The bill also provides that any accessibility improvements made to a residential property, such as ramps, widened doorways, and other changes to enhance the independence of persons with disabilities or elderly residents, would not increase the assessed valuation of the property for a period of seven years after the improvements are complete.

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS CHANNAHON – Six gymnasts from I & M Gymnastics in Channahon will represent the Central Division this month at the AAU National Gymnastics Championships.

Jordanna Cortes (Level 4), Mekhi Cortes (Level 6), Chloe DeMaso (Level 7), Gwen DeMaso (Level 6), Lexi Kronberger (Level 7), and Nic Strange (Level 5) will all be traveling along with their coaches, Tyler Yost, Izzy Broberg and Tera Smith to Las Vegas to compete in the national competition June 10 to 14, according to a news release from I & M Gymnastics.

Both the boys and girls’ teams had a successful year.

Between the six of them they have brought home numerous gold, silver and bronze individual awards as well as helping their team secure many first-, second- and third-place team awards.

The gymnasts recently competed in the state meet, where each placed within individual events and in the All-Around competition. Kronberger, Chloe DeMaso and Strange all took first in the All-Around for their age and level divisions.

The six will be competing for Team Central. This includes gymnasts from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa.

In the past few months, the gymnasts have participated in

various fundraisers throughout Channahon and neighboring communities.

The gymnasts are appreciative of the generosity provided by those who have contributed to help get the team to the national competition, and offer special thanks to Von Holton Eyecare for its donation, the team states in the release.

“During the Civil War young men went off and if they came back at all, they came back with new ideas,” Steele said. “Then the railroad came by and brought outside influence.”

The group said the first pilgrimage is designed to offer something for everyone, far more than a typical day trip

for shopping and dining.

“People can have a spiritual outing while having a good time,” Carlson said.

Additional dates are not set in stone, but group members intend a trip to Brookfield Zoo this summer. A speaker at the zoo will share how animals and spirituality work hand in hand.

In the fall, hopefully October depending on fall foliage, the group hopes to organize a trip to Nashotah House Theo-

logical Seminary in Wisconsin.

Nashotah House is a recognized seminary for the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church in North America, the Episcopal Missionary Church, and the North American Lutheran Church, among others.

Steele said it is the oldest degree college in Wisconsin and it is a great place to take a pilgrimage.

Many volunteers work together to bring Home for the Holidays to downtown Morris, and the committee encourages young people to volunteer as well, according to a news release from the Morris Downtown Development Partnership.

Each student was awarded $1,000, Nagel as a Grundy Area Vocational Center student and Wantland as a Morris Community High School student. These scholarships have been created to help young people who are involved in community service to continue their education after high school, according to the release.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DEERFIELD, Mass. – Irwin Rose, a biochemist who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering a way that cells destroy unwanted proteins – the basis for developing new therapies for diseases such as cervical cancer and cystic fibrosis – has died. He was 88.

Rose died in his sleep early Tuesday in Deerfield, Massachusetts, said spokeswoman Janet Wilson of the University of California, Irvine, where Rose had been a researcher.

Rose had a “formidable intellect and unwavering curiosity about fundamental biological and chemical processes that are the foundation for life,” UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman said in a university statement.

Each human cell contains about 100,000 different proteins, which carry out jobs such as speeding up chemical reactions and acting as signals.

Rose, along with Israelis Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko, won the Nobel for discovering how plant and animal cells marked old

Juntwait died in New York City after a decade-long battle with ovarian cancer, said Met spokesman Sam Neuman.

Until Dec. 31, her last broadcast, her home studio was nestled behind the Met’s Family Circle seats under the golden ceiling, in a space the size of an

Politics and the art of hope

A recent New Yorker magazine cover portrays Hillary Clinton looking in on a locker room full of Republican presidential candidates looking very white and very male. It obviously omits some of the contenders and some of their differences.

Blinkered by partisan ideology, it misses the point completely. It is also a stark contrast with a contemporaneous cover of The Economist.

With the tag line “The Weaker Sex,” the cover showed an image of a man in blue jeans and boots – as if ready to work – sitting and looking despondent. Carly Fiorina, missing from The New Yorker cover, is, as you may have heard, running for president. She’s made it her strategy to shadow Clinton, presenting herself as a contrast, and more than that, a different vision. In her recent book, “Rising to the Challenge,” she writes about the death of her stepdaughter, Lori, and the addiction and despair that led to it.

“Lori’s potential was never fulfilled, but death is not the only thing that crushes potential,” Fiorina writes.

“Too many people lose hope for themselves. Too many lack the opportunity to use their God-given gifts. Like Lori, every person has far more potential than they realize. Every person has the capacity to live a life of meaning, dignity, and purpose.”

It’s a vision that conjures up images of the immigrant past of my hometown of New York City, the storied history of hopes and hardship, struggles and faith. Occasionally before or after a morning Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, I think of what wisdom those strivers might impart to us now.

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez has stopped for many in America, and another presidential season of false narratives and misleading rhetorical attacks isn’t going to help people hear the music of “life, liberty and happiness” that has been our – albeit imperfect – drumbeat.

As Wilcox has written: “The fragility of contemporary religious life in working-class and poor communities in America is rooted not only in the ‘economic hammer blows’ dealt to communities by the new economy, but also in the technological and cultural changes that have undercut the virtues, values and institutions that sustain churches, synagogues and mosques – including strong and stable marriages and families.”

Articulating policies that encourage, not hinder, these buttresses at the heart of American democracy must be the task of a presidential election season. Everything else is a harmful distraction.

Politics isn’t a savior; it isn’t the dispenser of hope. But a campaign season can revive dreams, it can help hope float to the surface of our public discourse by highlighting what works and showing how political leadership can help the process. It might even make for an uplifting magazine cover, for a change.

Appreciate Blackhawks’ success Hockey is not a mainstream sport in the U.S. It’s not football. It’s not basketball. It’s not even baseball.

It’s Canada’s sport after all, although no Canadian team has won hockey’s ultimate prize – the Stanley Cup – since 1993. Hockey is still considered a niche sport, even in Chicago.

Because of that, you might be missing what’s going on in Chicago.

The Blackhawks opened Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday night in Tampa, Florida. They are four wins away from their third Stanley Cup in six seasons. They have played in the Western Conference final in five of the past seven seasons.

They have two of the best young stars in hockey –

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. They have one of the best defensemen in the NHL – Duncan Keith. They have one of the best leaders in sports – Toews. They have the third-winningest coach in NHL history – Joel Quenneville.

Some hockey observers have suggested they have a dynasty.

Indeed, it is a special time for Chicago hockey.

That wasn’t always the case, however. Success and the Hawks haven’t gone hand in hand. Sure, the Hawks had a 28-season stretch of qualifying for the playoffs from 1970 to 1997. But before winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, the Hawks hadn’t won it since 1961.

After that playoff stretch ended, the Hawks qualified

for the playoffs once in 10 seasons. Nobody went to games. Nobody could watch home games on TV. Nobody cared about the Hawks.

That all changed when Rocky Wirtz became chairman of the franchise in 2007 and then hired John McDonough to be the team president.

Since then, the Hawks have become a model franchise and have worked to grow hockey in Chicago by increasing exposure, catering to youth players and, of course, winning.

Regardless of sport, what the Hawks are doing is special. So whether you are a hardcore Hawks fan or a relative newcomer to hockey, take a moment to appreciate this run of success by the Blackhawks.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGTON – After starting the season with a very uncharacteristic 3-10 record, the Minooka baseball team rebounded in a big way. The Indians put up a much more Minooka-like 19-3 record in their past 22 games heading into Wednesday’s Class 4A Illinois Wesleyan University Sectional against Normal Community West at IWU’s Jack Horenberger Field. Included in the stretch was Monday’s 2-0 win over Plainfield South to win the title of the Joliet West Regional.

Powered by a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, by senior first baseman Jon Vesper, the Indians defeated Normal West, 6-5, and advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. sectional championship against O’Fallon.

Vesper, who already had slugged a pair of balls well over the fence but in foul territory, drove a solo homer to left in the top of the fourth inning to cut a 3-1 Normal West lead to 3-2. In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Vepser was the first Indian to face new Normal West pitcher

Owen Danielson. He greeted him with a grand slam that put Minooka ahead 6-5.

“After I hit those first two foul balls, I was just trying to put the ball in play to right field,” Vesper said. “The second home run, I thought was just going to be a double, to be honest. I was digging hard for two, and then coach (Jim) Lamping started screaming, so I knew it went out.

“Early in the year, we were playing a lot of individual baseball. As the year’s gone on, we are playing more as a team and that’s been the difference.”

Minooka scored first in the top of the third. With two outs, Jake Null was hit by a pitch and Georgetown-bound Cristian Sanchez tripled to left-center to bring him home.

Normal West countered with three runs in the bottom of the third before Vepser hit his first homer in the top of the fourth. Normal West then put across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half to take a 5-2 lead into the fifth.

Hawks to use Riemdsyk in final series

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com TAMPA, Fla. – Trevor van Riemdsyk has played a grand total of 18 NHL games. None since Nov. 16. Since then, he’s endured two surgeries – one to repair a fractured left kneecap, one to repair his right wrist – and has played only eight games in the American Hockey League.

But Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville won’t hesitate to put the rookie on the ice in the Stanley Cup Final. In fact, Quenneville said Wednesday that van Riemdsyk – who did not play in Game 1 against the Lightning – is likely to play at some point in the series.

That’s just how much of an impression he left with his early season success.

“We saw him first-hand, what he was able to do this year when he came into training camp,” Quenneville said.

“He surprised us all by how well he played, and how well he thought the game, and how effective and efficient he is.”

Van Riemsdyk practiced with the team Tuesday and again at Wednesday’s morning skate. Quenneville said he asked the rookie if he could play in Game 1, but that van Riemsdyk only said he was “close.” Quenneville has always been wary of young players, particularly on the blue line. But with Michal Rozsival injured and the Hawks leaning heavily on their top four defensemen, Quenneville is confident that van Riemdsyk can step right in on the sport’s biggest stage.

“We’ve been watching, we’ve been skating him in practice every day,” Quenneville said. “And one of his strengths is his reads, [being] positionally aware, decision-making with the puck.

He’s got a lot of attributes that can help our team. I think he came on the scene rather fast for us, and I think we’ve got a lot of confidence and trust in him.”

In today’s deal, how should South play in six spades after West leads the heart queen? What would declarer do if his club 10 were the club nine?

In the auction, there is no need for South to gallop skyward; his two-spade rebid is forcing. North’s jump to four spades promises at least four-card support, but requires no points and denies a first- or second-round control (no ace, void, king or singleton). Then, South’s final bid is a gamble, but who would do less?

The simple line is to take two club finesses, a line with a 76 percent probability of success. Declarer has two dummy entries with the spade nine and a heart ruff. However, it is better to have a 100 percent line available.

South wins with his heart ace, draws trumps, cashes his top diamonds and heart king, and ruffs his last heart in the dummy. Then declarer plays a club to his 10 (or queen). Here, West wins with his jack (or king), but what does he do next?

West is endplayed. If he returns a club, it is into South’s tenace. Or, if West leads a heart or a diamond, declarer ruffs in the dummy and discards a club from his hand.

Finally, note that the same play works with the club nine instead of the 10. South covers East’s first club as cheaply as possible. ******

Helicopter mom can’t stop keeping tabs on teen Dear Abby: I’m having a hard time letting my almost 17-year-old daughter out of my sight. When she walks home from school, I call to make sure she’s OK, then call her again minutes later when I estimate she’s home. The whole time I worry.

Men and women handle signs of aging in different ways. Fortunes have been spent on beauty products,

with varying degrees of success, although hope-in-a-jar springs eternal. Board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons can minimize the signs of aging with fillers, Botox, lasers and surgery, but they can be expensive. Others accept beauty comes from within and opt to do nothing to change their appearance.

Talking to people in their 70s, 80s or 90s about the changes they have experienced and the lessons they have learned as they grew older is a good idea. I’m sure you’ll receive some enlightening input. But if it doesn’t change your feelings, talk to a doctor because a good one can work miracles.
