person killed Sunday on I-80

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawnews.com MORRIS – A Chicago woman was killed Sunday after being involved in a five-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 in Morris. Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan said his office is investigating the death of 66-year-old Linda Baines, who was involved in a crash at 1:22 p.m. Sunday on I-80 just east of the Route 47 interchange.

Baines was traveling east on I-80 when the crash occurred, according to a news release from Callahan’s office.

She was transported to the emergency room at Morris Hospital, where she was pro-

nounced dead at 1:53 p.m.

A 7-year-old boy who was a passenger in Baines’ car had no injuries, according to the Illinois State Police.

The preliminary investigation into the crash found that a Chevy Cruze driven by a 34-year-old Morris man was traveling east on I-80 in the right lane just east of Route 47.

The Chevy Cruze cut off the Jeep Liberty driven by Baines, according to a news release issued Monday by the Illinois State Police.

“The Jeep Liberty swerved to the left and drove off the roadway, through the center median ditch and went airborne into the westbound lanes of I-80,” the news re-

lease said. “The Jeep Liberty crashed into the following vehicles causing a chain reaction crash with the Dodge Ram, GMC Acadia, Nissan Versa and Buick Enclave.”

The driver of the Chevy Cruze was issued a citation for improper lane usages.

Besides Baines, three people traveling in the other vehicles were taken to area hospitals. The collision remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office.

The crash caused I-80 westbound near Route 47 to be shut down until after 5 p.m., according to Illinois State Police, and traffic eastbound was shut down intermittently.

Jerome “Jerry” Burns, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which happened about 5 a.m. on Route 47 south of Spring Road,

according to a news release from Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Monday afternoon the call came in at 5:27 a.m. that a pickup truck was involved in a crash with a semitrailer.

“The pickup truck veered into the northbound lane and hit the semi pretty much headon,” Sheriff Callahan said.

He said the accident is being investigated by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police, to

determine the cause.

“Contributing factors are still under investigation,” Sheriff Callahan said.

No other injuries were reported. The preliminary investigation indicates Burns was driving south on Route 47 when he crossed the center line and struck a semitrailer traveling north. Burns was ejected from his pickup truck, according to the coroner’s news release.

The highway was shut down from 5:30 a.m. until 8:50 a.m.

Grundy County Fair brings fun for all ages starting on Wednesday

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The 111th annual Grundy County Agricultural District Fair starts Wednesday and offers something for the whole family.

“We’ll have two fireworks shows this year. Because of the flooding, Morris has moved their fireworks here on Sunday. We have a free gate, free fireworks and free parking.

You can’t beat it,” said Burdette Carter, a Grundy County Fair board member.

The fair will open Wednesday at 8 a.m. with the judging of fine arts, needlework and hobbies, among other categories, followed by draft horse and draft pony judging.

The carnival will open at 4 p.m. as the night gets going with entertainment for children of all ages with Magic Matt’s Family Fun Show, Circus Boy and the return of The Banana Derby, where you can root for your favorite rescue dog and jockey – which happens to be a monkey.

This year also will give people an up-close look at an elephant in the Elephant Discovery Exhibit, which is new this year.

Crews head to Coal City to clean up storm debris

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Maintenance and nonprofit organization crews were at work Monday to clean up debris in Coal City from the tornado that hit the area last week.

Maintenance and public works crews from other villages and cities are helping out, as are Team Rubicon, AmeriCorps and the Illinois Department of Transportation. More than 70 trucks from IDOT, mutual aid communities, private companies and volunteers are expected to roll into the city.

More than 800 structures were damaged in Coal City when an EF3 tornado with winds up to 160 mph hit the village just before 10 p.m. June 22, leaving debris throughout the community of about 5,500 people.

Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said the situation is improving in the village, and in the next three days organizations plan to get as much storm debris out of town as possible.

“Obviously, we got a lot of work to do. … But certainly things are much better,” he said.

Thousands of volunteers have been helping since Friday with the cleanup effort, which has focused on ridding the village of storm debris to ensure streets are open for traffic, and so storm water systems can run unimpeded.

The rain over the weekend and Monday has been a source of frustration with cleanup efforts, Halliday said. He said the goals for this week will not only be debris removal, but reduction of security perimeters – or checkpoints – to the point where the village’s own police department can manage them.

By the end of Monday or on Tuesday, crews might isolate the number of security perimeters to one subdivision, Halliday said. Coal City Police Sgt. Thomas Logan said Monday morning there were eight checkpoints and four roving patrols. Crews have focused

on cleaning Spring Road and Broadway Street, as that area is where vehicles can get in and out of the village quickly, he said.

Volunteer work was limited Monday because of the amount of equipment needed for use to clear out storm debris, Halliday said. He said there are 100 pieces of equipment – such as dump trucks and grapplers – that teams of crews are using in 13 areas zoned for work.

Residential trash collection will resume Tuesday and village officials coordinated with Waste Management to have additional trucks in operation.

“We’re trying to communicate with residents that storm debris is not personal items. … That needs to be handled by them personally, through their own insurance,” Halliday said. Coal City village partnered with Team Rubicon, an international nonprofit disaster response organization, to visit each property affected

by the tornado and offer assistance. The property owner is under no obligation to participate in the Team Rubicon program, village officials said.

Relief workers at Coal City Methodist Church are still feeding people three meals a day as well as helping them secure cleaning supplies and other items. The church will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but will be closed Saturday.

The church will reopen Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Church members plan to update the Facebook page every day with items needed.

Lori Cora, relief coordinator at the church, said if volunteers are interested in helping with kitchen work, unloading items or other work, they should call 815-634-8670 first.

Cora said families are starting to come into the church more after the initial shock of the storm. “Now they’re looking to take care of things,” she said.

• The Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, 909 N. Liberty St., Morris, is accepting items found blown into yards that may belong to residents affected by the tornado.

• Help for Hope, 630 S. Broadway St. in Coal City, is accepting monetary and item donations. It is in need of plastic totes for residents to pack belongings. Available at the center are cleaning supplies, food, water and other items.

Schlieper, of Wilmington, was one of 14 Girl and Boy Scouts who volunteered their time Monday at Sparkle Laundromat in Coal City to wash the clothes of residents who had no means to wash their own.

An EF3 tornado ripped through Coal City, and eastern Grundy County just before 10 p.m. June 22. Minor injuries were reported, but no fatalities occurred. More than 800 structures were damaged while several were destroyed.

Godley Park District Cub Scout Troop 459 Leader Ryan Deboard said the troop had washed nearly 50 loads of laundry by mid-afternoon Monday.

The laundromat donated $300 in quarters and several boxes of detergent to help

“They were really proud they could help the community in their own way,” Daisy Troop 71043 Leader Brandi Schlieper said.

Culver’s plans fundraiser for Special Olympics Tuesday MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Culver’s in Morris is partnering with Special Olympics Illinois for the inaugural “ButterBurgers & Badges” fundraising event from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

“ButterBurgers & Badges” will feature local law enforcement officers providing table service for guests dining inside and also delivering the chain’s famed burgers and fresh frozen custard desserts to those visiting the drive-through at the 1919 N. Division St. location, according to a news release from the restaurant.

The officers will collect tips for their service, which along with $1 for every purchase of any size concrete mixer, will benefit Special Olympics. In addition, local Special Olympics athletes will be on-hand to meet and greet guests and sign autographs.

“ButterBurgers & Badges” is part of a monthlong initiative by more than 45 Culver’s locations across the Chicago area that includes participating stores displaying “Change for Champions” donation canisters near counter areas, according to the release.

“Culver’s is proud to partner with Special Olympics Illinois,” Eric McCroskey, owner of Culver’s of Morris, said in the release. “Many of our restaurants currently employ team members who are also Special Olympic athletes, and that brings us an even closer connection to this great organization.”

Funds raised will help Special Olympics Illinois continue its programs that provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Culver’s will continue its support of Special Olympics as 15 athletes from Illinois head to Los Angeles for the World Games in July.

“We’re excited to partner with Culver’s this month on the ‘Change for Champions’ and ‘ButterBurgers & Badges’ event,” Dave Breen, Special Olympics Illinois President and CEO, said in the release.

“We appreciate the support they’re providing for the Special Olympics athletes of Illinois, and we look forward to a very successful event and partnership with such a wonderful organization.”

Grundy County Fair schedule announced MORRIS HERALD–NEWS The Grundy County Agricultural Fair starts its 111th season on Wednesday.

The fair will run through Sunday and is located at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, on Route 47 one mile north of Interstate 80 in Morris.

Czech soccer great Josef Masopust dies at 84 Was best known for scoring 1st goal in ’62 world final

By KAREL JANICEK The Associated Press PRAGUE – Czech soccer great Josef Masopust, who led the national side to the final of the 1962 World Cup, has died aged 84.

The Club of Josef Masopust’s Friends, the organization that takes care of his legacy, said he died in his Prague home Monday morning.

No cause of death was given.

The Czech public television said he was battling a serious, long-term illness.

“It’s an irreplaceable loss,” said Miroslav Pelta, the head of the Czech football federation. “He was a unique personality on and off the field.”

Underdogs Czechoslovakia reached the knockout stage after drawing 0-0 against Brazil in one of their group matches before eliminating Hungary and Yugoslavia on the way to the final.

Pele sustained an injury in the group stage encounter but at that time, substitutes were not allowed. When he got the ball, Masopust didn’t challenge him and allowed him to pass.

“It was a gesture I will never forget,” Pele said.

Masopust’s moment in the final came in the 15th minute when he collected a through ball and scored with a onetouch low shot past goalkeeper Gilmar.

The same year, Masopust became the first Czech to win the Golden Ball award for the best footballer in Europe.

He was also on the Czech team that finished third at the European Championship in 1960.

Masopust, who made 63 international appearances, was named the best Czech footballer of the century in 2000.

Masopust also played for Molenbeek for two seasons at the end of his career.

After retiring as a player, he became a respected coach of clubs at home and abroad.

He was in charge of the Czechoslovakia national team from 1984-87.

Thursday will start the Fourth of July weekend with a bang as the grandstands open at 6:30 p.m. for a free concert followed immediately by fireworks by Madbomber.

This year’s performer is Johnny Rogers, a man who will showcase the history of rock ‘n’ roll with his Buddy Holly looks and classic rock music.

“Buddy Holly’s brother said this guy does Buddy Holly better than Buddy Holly did,” Carter said. “This will be a great free show.”

Friday night will host your typical Friday night Speedway racing with the July 4th Twin 25’s late model features.

Saturday is kids day. Children can see the farm animals as they are judged, listen to the local talent as the annual talent contest is held at noon, or can compete in the Kids Pedal Pull, where they will compete against others in their age class to pedal tractors with all their might to win and be invited to compete at the regionals level of competition.

The fair will wind down Sunday with a day filled with rabbit and pony show judging, shows, and racing before the city of Morris hosts its fireworks Sunday night to end the Fourth of July weekend.

The fireworks, which were originally scheduled to take place July 3 at Stratton Park, had to be moved due to flooding on the Illinois River.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said with the road construction this year on North Route 47, those attending the fair should provide plenty of time to get in and

out of the fairgrounds.

The south entrance, typically referred to as the barn entrance, is closed due to construction, leaving the main entrance and the pit entrance as the only ways in and out of the fair.

“We will have extra deputies there both nights of the fireworks providing traffic control, along with help from the Morris Police Department and the Illinois State Police,” Callahan said. “This year’s traffic will be worse with the construction.”

He asks residents who want to view the fireworks do so from outside the fairground and to remember to keep the roadways clear when choosing a location.

Morris Hospital April and May Fire Starters MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

MORRIS – A strong leader is critical to any team’s success. Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers recognizes this in its monthly Fire Starters of the Month.

For April, Health Information Management Specialist Judy Chapman of Mazon was the hospital’s Fire Starter and for May it was secretary in the Nutrition Services Department Linda Baker of Verona.

Chapman is described as someone with a calm, professional attitude who helps everyone in the department and Judy sets a good ex- Chapman ample.

“I’m thankful we have Judy and the talents she brings,” Kahla Boe, director of Health Information Management, said in a news release. “She has a great smile and a warm personality that everyone responds to. She truly cares about Morris Hospital and her colleagues, and it shows in her day-to-day work activities.”

Early on in her 25-year career with Morris Hospital, Chapman started out in the Business Office and also worked registration in the Emergency Department on midnights. Within two to three years, she transferred to HIM, called Medical Records at the

time, where she focused on inpatient analysis.

As the department grew, Chapman took a lead position on afternoons and eventually switched to the lead position that she holds today on days.

In this role, Chapman and a team of six others are responsible for scanning and processing patient records to make sure all charts are complete.

If they detect any deficiencies, the chart goes back to the doctor for completion.

“Our goal is to make sure every patient record, by the time it’s completed, is a legal document,” Chapman said in the release. “We have a great bunch and have really developed good work flow and teamwork. We continue to progress with every change that comes through the department. I enjoy working with all of them.

They are a great group.”

Baker was selected as Fire Starter of the Month for May. She has been with the hospital for 10 years.

Morris has its hands full with work and play Usually in this job, the summer is a time that’s not quite so busy.

Last week was not a normal summer week. Between the tornado in Coal City and the 30th annual Morris Shootout, there was more on the table than I usually have during the summer.

I am not complaining. I didn’t have half the workload of our news staff, as Christina Chapman-Van Ypren, Heidi Litchfield and Mike Mallory all went way above and beyond the call with their efforts in bringing you coverage of both the tornado devastation and the cleanup efforts.

My tornado duties involved seeing how it affected Coaler athletics, and cleaning up the Dzuris Athletic Complex is going to be a chore. But, if what has happened in that town so far is any indication, it will come back stronger than it

was before.

Speaking of Coaler athletics, the basketball team was scheduled to play in the Morris Shootout. Coach Brad Boresi made the decision to not attend the shootout so that his players could do their part helping their families and friends.

He also lined up his own team’s replacement in the Morris Shootout, getting Peotone to take Coal City’s place. Kudos go to both Coach Boresi for his quick thinking and to Peotone coach Scott Maupin for stepping in to help. Stepping in to help has been a common theme in the wake of the storm.

The Morris football team went over Friday to lend its services, as I wrote about in Sunday’s paper.

On Saturday night, I got an email from Morris boys soccer coach David Valdivia telling

A total of 17 boys and girls soccer players from Morris, as well as two coaches, volunteered on Saturday.

“We volunteered at the Methodist Church,” Valdivia said. “It was a victory for us, as we were able to help off load donated items and load them to cars who needed them. We also did a whole truck where we transfered boxes from one truck to another in a chain of passing the boxes.

“It was awesome to see so many kids volunteer their time and how eager they were to help out.

This only brought us closer

as a team and I can’t wait to see how this will affect their lives.”

It’s funny how things change in the span of a few days. On Monday night and Tuesday morning, my heart was heavy after seeing the destruction. As the week ended, seeing the people of Coal City and the surrounding communities band together to help the town clean up and recover from the storm made my heart sing.

Meanwhile, the Morris Shootout rolled on as scheduled, with 92 games in two days at the MCHS gymnasium and fieldhouse. Galesburg emerged as the tournament champion, topping defending shootout champ Normal Community in the title game.

Defending Class 4A state champion Stevenson won the consolation title in the Gold bracket.

Both teams were in Morris’ pool on Wednesday. In the Maroon bracket, Bloomington Central Catholic came away as the champ, with Belleville West winning the consolaton title.

Both local entrants, Morris and Minooka, had a mixed bag as far as results go, with Morris going 1-4 and Minooka 2-3. Both teams had many players who got a lot of time on the court against teams and playing styles they might not see otherwise.

There are no shootouts on the schedule this week and, we hope, no more tornadoes.

Maybe we can shift into a more leisurely gear for a month or so before the high schools begin practice for their fall seasons.

OPINION Madigan sends a message to Chicago House Speaker Michael Madigan likes to send “messages.” He doesn’t often explain what those messages are, but last week’s surprising defeat of a bill to give the Chicago Public Schools a 40-day extension on its $634 million pension payment due June 30 was most surely a message to somebody.

Despite his spokesman saying the day before that Madigan was “prepared to be supportive,” it’s clear that Madigan did not work to pass the bill, which was being pushed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. His staff did not urge members to vote for it during the roll call.

Madigan himself said he did not ask the Republicans for a specific number of votes for a structured roll call, which is another indication that he wasn’t ready to move the ball forward.

Madigan’s Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang presided over the proceeding. A newspaper reported that Lang voted “No” in order to file a motion to reconsider the vote that would keep it alive. OK, but if you watch the roll call, Lang pushed his red button right after the voting was opened.

House Democrats don’t have to be told what to do at moments like these. As we’ve seen time and again, when Madigan doesn’t actively push a bill, his members automatically assume that things aren’t soup yet and they can vote however they want.

So, when Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office sent out a statement saying: “The only reason the Speaker’s Chicago caucus would vote against the mayor’s bill is because Madigan wanted to kill it,” Madigan could deny to reporters with a straight face that he said that to anybody. But whether the

VIEWS Rich Miller governor’s office is right or if Madigan simply stepped aside and allowed the bill to go down on its own, the end result is still the same. The bill failed.

“This complicates things,” a high level Rauner administration official cryptically said.

Yep. That’s how he said it. He refused to elaborate further.

Despite the dark humor, the Rauner folks were in no mood for the usual Springfield parlor game of guessing what Madigan was actually trying to say without actually saying it.

They thought they had a deal, they trusted Madigan to hold up his end, and instead the bill went down in flames. Their anger was palpable.

Most likely, he was sending a message to Emanuel that if he wanted to cut deals with Rauner and Senate President John Cullerton, then he’d have to work his caucus to find the votes – or come to him and ask that he do it. And he also likely wants Rauner to “own” this steaming pile of kick the can.

Insiders have long said that Madigan has believed from the beginning that those three men would attempt to triangulate him. Mayor Emanuel lives in Cullerton’s district and he has a long-standing professional, political and personal friendship with Rauner.

It’s always been the obvious play: Line up the mayor, the governor, the Senate Democrats and the two House GOP caucuses against the House Speaker.

Wanted: Scout with keen pencil Illinois Auditor General William Holland is retiring Dec. 31, and we – the residents of Illinois – all likely owe him a card and maybe flowers.

His job, simply stated, is to keep those in state government honest by employing integrity, a hard nose and a team of accountants.

He is the guy who took aim at the state’s workers’ compensation system after the News-Democrat’s investigation of 230 Menard Correctional Center employees, mostly guards, who got $10 million by claiming ailments including wrist ouchies from turning cell door locks.

He is the guy who audited

former Gov. Pat Quinn’s use of the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative and showed the money was going to questionable sources and sprinkling dollars where votes were needed. The revelations of that audit were a big part of why we now have a new governor.

This is the guy who uncovered more than $546,650 in tax dollar abuses by convicted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who used the state’s purchasing system to wine, dine and pay for parking at Bulls games.

The Blagojevich audit in 2005 led to the biggest confrontation and pushback of Holland’s 23 years leading

the auditor’s office. Blags called the findings illogical, but they all proved to be true.

If you judge a man by the enemies he makes, “Hot Rod” Blagojevich alone renders Holland as worthy.

So the low-key defender of your tax dollar recently called his second press conference since he took office in 1992 – the first was to defend the Blagojevich findings.

At age 63, he wants to spend more time with family.

We wish him well. We offer our sincere thanks to a true servant of the public good. We hope the new person is as upright as Holland.

At first glance, that requires a 2-2 split, but there is one other possibility.

best friends, “Edna,” to wish her a happy birthday. It was her 101st. When I asked her about her family, she spent some time sobbing over the recent news that her eldest son has cancer.

My first thought – and that of several others – was, why was she told?! Edna is frail and in poor health. She has seen her share of tragedies and losses in her long life, and I think she should have been spared this devastating news.

Hearing her sob on her birthday broke my heart.

However, a couple of my friends disagreed with me.
