Kopczick said if the council votes down his appointment in July, the meeting will move forward without the seat filled as it did Monday, and he would then make his appointment at a future meeting.

Valdivia said Tuesday he is disappointed he wasn’t appointed, but he understands the mayor was respecting Sereno’s wishes.

“I thought it was honorable for the mayor to take the suggestion of Ken Sereno. Ken was an alderman for as long as I’ve been alive,” Valdivia said. “I believe both Julian Houston and I would be good candidates.”

Mattingly said Houston was interviewed by the Republican caucus, but Valdivia received the party’s nomination. Messages left Tuesday for Houston were not immediately returned, and he did not comment at Monday’s meeting.

Brent Dite said Tuesday, just random minor damage to the vehicles. The investigation by patrol officers and detectives has identified the offender as a 15-year-old juvenile from Morris.

The matter was forwarded to the Grundy County Juvenile Probation Department, and charges are pending in Juvenile Court, according to the release.

“I don’t know about everybody else,” Hayse said about not being contacted about the appointment, “but I get off work about 2 p.m. I’m very available.”

According to Illinois Municipal Code 65 ILCS 5/3.1-1050, the mayor has 60 days to appoint someone to the seat, at which time the council has 30 days to vote on the appointment. If the appointment is voted down, the mayor has 30 days from the vote to appoint another alderman for vote by the council.

If the mayor’s next appointment also is voted down, he can make an appointment of either of the two appointees he put before the council, and that person will serve as alderman until the next election for the seat.

Morris MOPS group offers support for local mothers, participates in local events

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Carli Damato, a mother of two, moved from Crest Hill to Morris a little more than a year ago.

Postpartum depression followed the birth of each of her children, she said. But the move to Morris turned out to be helpful for at least one reason.

She found comfort in the Morris Mothers of Preschoolers chapter, which meets from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. the second and fourth Fridays of months September through May at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris.

The first meeting Damato attended, postpartum depression was discussed.

“It was dead-on,” she said.

“It helped me feel not alone.”

The group of about 20 mothers provide a positive atmosphere for Damato and other attendees.

“When you leave a meeting, you feel better,” Damato said.

The theme of this year’s meetings, as chosen by MOPS International, was to “Be You Bravely.” In the May 22 meeting, the group split into smaller groups and talked about brave women in the Bible, and

“We are open to all moms of preschoolers,” Shroba said.

“We welcome all.”

Having just concluded its second year of meetings, the

group hopes to grow. On average, 10 to 12 of the 20 registered members attend a meeting, Shroba said.

Dispensary proposal hears much opposition

MORRIS – Monday’s Morris City Council meeting lasted nearly four hours – so long that Mayor Richard Kopczick paused it to run for a third recording tape.

The council chambers were full, and 18 people signed up to speak. The vast majority of the people were against the prospective location of a medical marijuana dispensary at 2400 W. Route 6, the former Rockwell Inn. Greenhouse Group LLC applied for a conditional permitted use permit to open a dispensary in the former restaurant. The council voted 4-3 to postpone a decision until the council had its eighth alderman in place. An attempt to fill that position at the start of the meeting failed.

Aldermen Bill Martin, Duane Wolfe, Jeff Wachowski and Doug Hayse voted to table, while Don Hansen, Randy Larson and Don Matteson voted against.

Speakers opposed to the location represented Rockwell Estates, Heatherfield and Nettle Creek subdivisions, as well as Ambassadors for Christ Church.

Public comment was made after the council heard a presentation from Greenhouse Group partners Matt Darin and Mitch Khan, who said the facility would feel like a wellness center or spa, and medical marijuana would be in a safe.

“We’re trying to build a community aspect here,” Darin said.

The building could feature yoga, acupuncture, meditation classes, a cancer support group and other things, Darin said, adding that it’s a destination for people who are suffering medically – not a business with neon signs to attract customers.

Only about 2,500 people so far have been approved in the state to receive medical marijuana, state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, told the council.

As a former law enforcement officer, Hayse said he shared the public’s concerns about security.

Darin said the location will have more than 30 security cameras linked to the Illinois State Police, with 24-7 surveillance on file for 90 days.

Public comments get heated

Ted Ergo of Nettle Creek said he’s concerned customers would leave the location, park in one of the subdivisions and roll a joint.

Bob Spiers, who lives on Taller Road, said he’d like to see more research done, and he hopes employees would have four-year degrees – not just learning from a training class.

Rosignal turned to the crowd and warned they shouldn’t want it near their neighborhoods. Kopczick told Rosignal he was getting out of line, and he ended his speech.

“I thought for the most part people were well-behaved,” Kopczick said Tuesday. “But a couple of people got out of line and were rude. You don’t have to be that way to get your point across.”

Channahon Village Board swears in Host as new trustee

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Chan nahon Planning and Zoning Commissioner Chantal Host was sworn in Monday evening as the village’s newest trustee.

Host’s appointment fills the vacant two-year term that was held by Village President Missey Schumacher for half a term before Schumacher won the president’s seat in April.

Schumacher chose Host for the position, and the board unanimously approved her appointment.

“I wanted someone who is fiscally conservative,” Schumacher said, “because we are good stewards of our tax dollars. ... Chantal has been on the Planning and Zoning Commission for several years, so she obviously has an interest in Channahon as a whole, and her family is also very much a part of this community.”

“I enjoy doing my work on the Planning and Zoning Commission,” Host said just before Monday’s board meeting. “This will give me the opportunity to have more of an impact on my community.”

From her years as a commissioner, Host said she is knowledgeable about important issues facing the village, such as the Interstate 55/ Route 6 interchange construction project set to begin this summer.

In her statement to the Village Board, Host wrote: “I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that our community has faced with recognizing our community identity and

MORRIS – Grundy County Legislative Committee members have questions about how people are chosen to sit on various committees and boards throughout the county, and are looking at a way to make the selections more transparent.

“The Grundy County Board is asked to fill positions on boards and commissions across the county based on recommendations from those boards,” Debra Warning, committee chairwoman, said. “We don’t know what their process is.”

The committee met Tuesday. Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said it’s an important issue because of the move toward transparency. The Legislative Committee will be sending out letters to the various boards and commissions asking what their process is for filling vacancies to see what is taking place.

Warning said not knowing the process makes it difficult to make the decision to approve the resolutions appointing these members.

She said they have looked at other counties including

DuPage and were able to see that positions are posted when they become open, allowing the public to apply with the knowledge of whether the position is a paid position or a volunteer position.

“I think taxpayers have the right to know who their officials are and if they are being paid,” she said.

She said some residents may feel they can’t call or don’t want to bother a water commissioner or a road commissioner if they think that person is volunteering their time. But if they knew the position was a paid position, they may reach out to ask for help with something that job is supposed to be taking care of. She said by making the positions more transparent, it also opens them to expand their network countywide.

Welter said it comes down to the fact that the county is voting to hire candidates without any knowledge like background checks or qualifications, which could ultimately fall back on the county if something goes wrong.

The committee will address the issue again at the next meeting once they’ve gotten responses from the various groups.

Bat tests positive for rabies in Grundy County MORRIS HERALD–NEWS A bat submitted by a homeowner to Grundy County Animal Control for testing has tested positive for rabies.

Bats are starting to become more active, which means possible exposure to rabies is increasing, according to a news release from the Grundy County Health Department.

Bats are the primary carrier of rabies in Illinois. Officials ask residents to never approach or catch a bat, or any wild animal found outside. Instead, call the local animal control agency for its recommendations on how to handle the animal.

The phone number for Grundy County Animal Control is 815-942-9214.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system. People can get rabies after being bitten by an infected animal. Rabies can also be contracted when saliva from a rabid animal gets directly into a person’s eyes, nose, mouth or a wound, according to the release.

If you find yourself in close proximity to a bat and are not sure if you were exposed, do not kill or release the bat before calling your doctor or local health department to help determine if you could have been exposed, according to officials.

If the bat is available for testing and results are negative, preventive treatment is not needed. Without treatment, rabies is typically fatal. If you have been bitten or have had direct contact with a bat, seek immediate medical attention.

Treatment with rabies immune globulin and a vaccine series must begin quickly, according to the release.

An animal does not have to be aggressive or exhibit other symptoms to have rabies.

Changes in any animal’s normal behavior can be early signs of rabies.

The following tips can help prevent the spread of rabies: • Keep vaccinations up-todate for all dogs, cats and other animals you own.

• Seek immediate veteri-

nary assistance if your pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat.

• Call the local animal control agency about removing stray animals in your neighborhood.

• Do not touch, feed or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.

• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.

Do not try to nurse sick, wild animals to health. Call animal control or an animal rescue agency for assistance.

• Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.

• Maintain homes and other buildings so bats cannot get inside.

• If a bat is in your home, do not release the bat outdoors until speaking with animal control. If you can do it without putting yourself at risk, try to cover the bat with a large can or bucket, and close the door to the room.

Dick O’Regan, longtime AP reporter, dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN – Richard A. “Dick” O’Regan, who covered some of the biggest stories of the Cold War in a 39-year career as a reporter and executive for The Associated Press, has died. He was 95.

O’Regan died at a hospital in Geneva on Monday after suffering a heart attack, according to his son, Kevin.

Born in Boston on July 15, 1919, O’Regan launched his journalism career as a teenager working for newspapers in Britain.

As he recalled in a 2008 interview, he obtained his first reporting job in the United States by witnessing a tragedy: Early in World War II, O’Regan decided to move to the United States and en route saw a Nazi U-Boat torpedo a British Navy vessel.

O’Regan’s ship helped rescue some of the British sailors, and he wrote an eyewitness account – without any place to print it. Upon docking in Philadelphia, he ran into a reporter from the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper and offered him

O’Regan worked at that newspaper until 1942, when he took a job with the United Press in New York putting together the daily dispatches on the war in Europe. In March 1945, AP hired him away to do the same thing, and soon sent

him to Germany to cover the aftermath of the war. His first big story was the death of Gen. George S. Patton Jr., who less than a year earlier had helped lead the U.S. Third Army to victory.

He became the AP’s chief of bureau in Vienna in 1950 and was one of the few Western reporters allowed to visit Hungary and Romania in 1953 following the death of Soviet

dictator Josef Stalin.

In 1955, he returned to Frankfurt, where he served 11 years as chief of bureau, overseeing news and business in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. He expanded AP’s German language operations, making the German service among AP’s biggest news operations.

From his various posts, he helped cover the rebirth of Western Europe from the ruins of World War II, the Berlin airlift, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Hungarian revolution of 1956, and the confrontation between U.S. and Soviet troops at Checkpoint Charlie.

“It was a scary moment, I recall, when I stood at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, watching American and Russian tanks only yards apart leveling their guns at each other after the Russians had tried to bar Americans from entering the communist quarter,” he said in the 2008 interview. “It was a moment in the history of the Cold War that was almost as dangerous as the Cuban Missile Crisis a year later.”

Ex-Separatist Quebec premier dead at age 84 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MONTREAL – Jacques Parizeau, the blunt-talking former separatist Quebec premier who came close to taking the French-speaking province out of Canada, has died. He was 84.

Current Separatist Parti Quebecois Leader Pierre Karl Peladeau confirmed the death Tuesday and said the entire province is in mourning. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said Parizeau will have a

state funeral. Both Couillard and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed condolences. The blustery, mustachioed Parizeau was premier during the 1995 provincial referendum when Quebecois voted against separation by a slim margin in a referendum.

In career-ending comments on referendum night, Parizeau blamed “money and the ethnic vote” for the loss and was roundly criticized to the point that he resigned as premier a day later.

“We are beaten, it is true,” he said of the French in Quebec. “But by what, basically?

By money and ethnic votes.”

Many said the remarks were racist as he targeted and blamed immigrants and English speakers in Quebec for the loss. In an interview in October 2013, Parizeau insisted the infamous remark was not meant to target specific voters – just community organizations.

“The common front of the Italian, Greek and Jewish con-

gresses was politically active in an extraordinary way in the No camp and had formidable success,” Parizeau told a Montreal radio station. “It was very efficient.”

The father of two children – Isabelle, a lawyer, and Bernard, a doctor – Parzeau was married to Polish-born novelist Alice Poznanska, who died in 1990. In 1992, he married Lisette Lapointe, a former aide who went on to forge her own political career as a member of the Quebec national assembly.

Kentucky folksinger Jean Ritchie dies at 92

By LUQMAN ADENIYI The Associated Press NEW YORK – Jean Ritchie, the Kentucky-born folksinger who brought the centuries-old ballads she grew up with to a wide audience from the 1950s onward, died Monday evening. She was 92. Ritchie died in her home in Berea, Kentucky, with family around her, her niece Judy Hudson said.

The tall, red-haired Ritchie, who grew up in Kentucky’s Cumberland mountains, sang ballads Jean Ritchie with a clear soprano voice. She accompanied herself on the guitar, autoharp or the mountain dulcimer, a string instrument played while placed on the performer’s lap that Ritchie helped rescue from obscurity. Among the hundreds of songs she performed were “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” “Old Virginny,” “One Morning in May” and “Aunt Sal’s Song.”

Hudson said Ritchie suffered a stroke several years ago and moved back to Kentucky from the East Coast.

Last fall, Ritchie appeared on her last CD, “Dear Jean: Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie,” a two CD tribute that featured an old recording of Ritchie’s and another track that included a recording of her leading an audience before her stroke.

Shroba said uninterrupted conversation is cherished when one becomes a mother.

“People are also usually more comfortable opening up in a small group,” she said.

Total attendance is split into smaller groups during meetings, and although MOPS is new to Morris, and a small chapter, MOPS International has been in communities since the 1970s.

There are more than 3,900 MOPS chapters spread through 35 countries.

When it’s hot out and the garden is bountiful, everyone’s in the mood for a light and refreshing entree salad.

And what could be easier?

You just toss together a bunch of lettuce with some cooked protein, add an excellent dressing, and boom! You’re done. Or not. Turns out that if you pay a little more attention to the components of the salad, you won’t need to rely quite so much on the dressing to provide all the flavor. In fact, it’s easy to make something wonderful.

Here’s the basic formula per serving of salad: 2 cups of lettuce, a heaping 1⁄3 cup of halved cherry tomatoes, 1⁄3 cup of sliced cucumbers, a quarter of an avocado (cubed), and 1 tablespoon of dressing.

The key, though, is to season each and every part one at a

time, and to do so at just the right moment.

Let’s start with the cherry tomatoes. You’ll be amazed at how much more tomato-y they’ll taste after they’ve been salted and drained, preferably for 30 minutes. Cucumbers, likewise, become more cucumber-y with salting, though the salt also tenderizes them.

While the tomatoes and the cucumbers are draining, you should cut up the avocado, put it in the bottom of the salad bowl, season it, and toss it with the dressing. This last step prevents it from oxidizing and turning color. Pile on the additional ingredients as they become ready. Note: To remove the pit from an avocado safely, cut it into quarters.

After rinsing the lettuce, spin it dry or gently pat it dry with paper towels. Dressing will slide right off wet greens.

Keep in mind that a variety of lettuces is more enticing than just one kind, and mixing in

whole herb leaves with the greens makes a salad extra special.

Finally, after all of the components have been prepped and added to the bowl, sprinkle the greens with a little salt and pepper and toss the salad with your hands. Lettuce bruises easily. Your hands are exactly the right tool for this delicate job. Now that your basic salad is dressed and ready to go, top it off with grilled chicken, shrimp, beef, pork or tofu to turn it into a substantial summertime entree.

OPINION Days of ‘make believe’ Illinois budgets over?

SPRINGFIELD – There are three ways to “balance” a state budget: raise taxes, cut spending or play “make believe.”

At least, that’s the explanation a budget director for a former governor gave me years ago. The Illinois Constitution requires that the Legislature not budget to spend more money than it expects to take in the coming year.

In other words, it requires a balanced budget. For years, lawmakers have gotten around this requirement by playing ”make believe” with the numbers.

They’ll pretend the state’s anticipated revenues will be greater than any realistic projections show. The lawmakers then call the plan “balanced” and pass it into the law.

This legal fig leaf is responsible for the state racking up billions of dollars in deficits year after year.

But now, the fig leaf is gone and House Speaker Mike Madigan is baring it all.

Last week, he announced he would push through a budget that spends $3 billion more than he believes the state will collect in taxes. (The actual number may be closer to $4 billion; but, hey, what’s an extra $1 billion?)

Regardless, the speaker of the House stood in front of room full of reporters and announced he was going to work to send an unbalanced budget to Gov. Bruce Rauner.

And that is what he did.

And not a single reporter thought to ask, “Gee, Mr. Speaker, isn’t that like, you know, unconstitutional?”

Madigan is trying to force Rauner and Republican lawmakers to support a tax increase by passing a spending plan first. It would be like if your spouse headed to the mall with your credit card

Madigan started out his news conference saying he believes Rauner was “reckless” for introducing a budget in February he believes had a $2 billion hole in it.

Madigan’s solution?

Introduce his own budget with a $4 billion hole in it.

What does that make him?

Super-duper reckless?

But more importantly, doesn’t his conduct violate the constitution he swore to uphold?

Sadly, those questions aren’t getting asked. But they set the stage for what likely will be the biggest political battle in Illinois history.

Rauner has vowed to veto any unbalanced budget, and he said he won’t support a tax hike until there is substantial reform of the state’s business and political climate.

Madigan has balked at some of the political reforms because they threaten his entrenched power.

So both sides are now preparing for political war.

And Rauner is determined to get his message out.

That portends for a brutal summer.

But, at least, no one is playing “make believe” anymore.

Secrets of a former House speaker Penn State had to repaint a mural. A law enforcement complex in South Carolina had to change its name. And what was once called the Nixon Freeway is now known as the Marina Freeway to California commuters.

Jerry Sandusky, James Metts and Richard Nixon are examples of why nothing should be named after a living person. You just never know when someone will morph from good example to cautionary tale, as former House Speaker Dennis Hastert reminded the nation last week.

Mr. Hastert, the longest-serving Republican speaker, resigned from his lobbyist job Thursday after a damning federal grand-jury indictment was made public.

The former high school teacher and wrestling coach is accused of making illegal withdrawals from his bank accounts and lying to federal investigators about them.

The bombshell, however, was not those actions, but the alleged scandal surrounding them: the charge that Mr. Hastert was withdrawing the money to pay $3.5 million to an unnamed person in exchange for keeping “past misconduct” secret.

The New York Times reported that, according to sources familiar with evidence gathered by the FBI, the payments allegedly went to a man sexually abused decades ago by Mr. Hastert when he was a high school teacher and wrestling coach.

Whatever transpires, the

indictment mars a previously unblemished political career spanning nearly three decades.

In December 1998, a month before Mr. Hastert became House speaker, the executive director of the Illinois GOP told The Washington Post, “There is not a breath of scandal associated with Denny.”

Meanwhile, plans for a $500,000 statue of Mr. Hastert at the Illinois Capitol are now on hold. No word on what will become of the wrestling tournament known as the Denny Hastert Yorktown Invitational.

Note to naming committees everywhere: Reputations take years to build, but only days to crumble.

JCA ends Morris’ softball season in sectional

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On Tuesday, a day after winning the Class 3A Ottawa Regional championship with a 2-1 victory over LaSalle-Peru, the Redskins opened play in the Morris Sectional against Joliet Catholic Academy. The Angels had won the Kankakee Regional the previous day with a 2-1 win over Lincoln-Way West.

Much like the day before, the semifinal game was close throughout. Unfortunately for Morris, the Angels came away with a 3-2 victory and advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. sectional championship against the winner of Wednesday’s Oak Forest-Peotone game.

Errors cost the Redskins in the top of the third inning.

JCA leadoff hitter Reilly Jo Swanson hit a foul popup down the third-base line, but it was dropped. Swanson then singled to right before Brenna Garland hit an infield single to short. Winning pitcher Alyssa Callans then doubled to left-center, scoring Swanson with the game’s first run. Josie Henderson then grounded to third, but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, loading the bases. A grounder to short by Meghan Harrison was booted for an error, bringing home Garland. Alivia Phelps hit into a fielder’s choice to short, with Callans forced out at the plate for the first out.

Paige Callans then singled to center to score Henderson for a 3-0 JCA lead. Kayla Bennett grounded to short, with Harrison forced out at home, before Caitlyn Spreitzer popped to the catcher to end the inning.

“One bad inning,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We haven’t had one of those in a while. They were a problem for us at the beginning of the year, and, unfortunately, it came back to bite us in a big game.

“But, being in the situation we were in, it could have been a lot worse. The girls buckled down and relaxed and kept the game within our grasp. Janelle made a couple of nice plays at short to cut down a couple of runs.”

Morris countered in the bottom of the fourth. Ashley Phelps led off with a single and Bailey Doss ran for her. After a flyout, a grounder back to the circle moved Doss to second. Taya Torkelson singled to right, scoring Doss to make it 3-1. After Torkelson stole second, Melissa Benson doubled to right, scoring Torkelson to cut the lead to 3-2. A passed ball moved Benson to third, but Callans got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Morris had a runner on second in both the sixth and seventh innings, but each inning ended with a line drive back to Callans.

“I struggled a little bit early,” Callans said. “My curve and my riseball were my best pitches today. It was a good day. Our hitting was pretty good and we took advantage of some errors.

“We’ve kind of grown together as a team as the year has gone on. We kind of like being the underdog. There’s nothing to lose and we can just be relaxed and play our best.”

The Angels had chances to add to the lead, but stranded runners on second and third in the fifth and left one on third in the seventh.

“We have hit the ball pretty well the last couple weeks,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said.

“We hit the ball hard, and their shortstop made a couple of good plays or we could have had some more runs. Alyssa did a nice job pitching and our defense made the plays they should have.”

One play that stood out

was a running catch deep in left-center by Garland on a ball hit by Burns in the sixth. Garland was a step from the fence when she hauled in the drive, which came when Morris had a runner on first.

“Brenna made a great catch there,” Douglas said. “Earlier in the year, when we were struggling, that play didn’t get made. We had so many injuries and illnesses early on that we didn’t know day to day what the lineup would be. Now, we have been able to settle into a nice little groove.”

“A couple more feet or a quarter of an inch on the bat on the ball Abby hit and it’s a different game,” Lowery said.

“But, their left fielder made a great play.

“That inning again, it was the two seniors (Leah Lines and Torkelson each singled).

It’s going to be sad to see them go. They’ve been up on the varsity for four years, so those will be some big shoes to fill.

The good thing is that we have a lot of talent coming back and a lot of talent on the lower levels. We’re pretty optimistic about the future. As far as this year, it’s disappointing to lose, but from where we started, to finish 24-9 and a second straight regional title is very good. Our mental game improved and the girls grew a lot, both as individual players and as a team.”

Stanley Cup: the circle is now complete

“I could have been drafted by any other team in the league,” the Blackhawks defenseman said. “The coming here at the exact time with Tazer and Kaner [Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane] when everything started turning around.

“I still have no idea of how it was before, when it was half-empty in the United Center. It’s almost like I can’t believe that it was actually like that. You’re so used to playing in front of a crazy, sell-out crowd every game.”

When Hjalmarsson was drafted in the fourth round in 2005, the Hawks were in the

midst of an embarrassing dry spell.

An organization that had qualified for the playoffs in 37 of 38 seasons from 1959 to ’97, missed the playoffs 10 times in 11 seasons from 1998 to 2008.

They had not won the Stanley Cup since 1961.

Now Hjalmarsson, Kane, Toews, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa and Bryan Bickell are going for their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons when they open the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night at Amalie Arena.

Toews, Kane, Keith and the rest of the Hawks core have fueled the Hawks’ rise to prominence. But it all starts at the top, with Rocky Wirtz, who became the Hawks chairman in 2007. Everything fell into place

from there.

“All this started … when Rocky took over the franchise,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said. “The changes he made gave us some momentum and excitement.

“We had a good year leading into that year. But Rocky came on board and sort of changed the whole mentality of the organization. From that point on, we felt like we were getting closer and closer. Obviously, the 2010 season [when the Hawks won their first Stanley Cup in 49 years] was when we finally broke through.”

The Hawks renaissance is built around great players and a coach with a knack for maximizing that talent in Joel Quenneville. But the players know it takes more than just talent to win championships.

“It’s the training staff. It’s

coaches. It’s the organization,” said Sharp, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2005. “Right now we’re focused on playing a good game against Tampa Bay. We certainly do take a moment every once in a while to appreciate how lucky we are to play for a great organization and play with each other in that locker room. There are a lot of great players, a lot of great guys. It’s a special team to be a part of.”

From Hull and Mikita to Toews and Kane, Chicago has always adored its star players.

But with the exception of Michael Jeffery Jordan, championships stem from leadership at the top.

The Bears were in the early stages of post-Halas dysfunction when they won just one Super Bowl with a loaded ros-

ter in the Ditka era and haven’t won since.

The Cubs, the biggest losers in the history of American sports, are only now coming out of the funk of ownership ineptitude. The Bulls just fired one of the best coaches in team history.

The White Sox have won one playoff game in nine seasons since winning the World Series.

And the Hawks? In an NHL era designed for winners to come and go, they are going for their third championship in six seasons. It starts at the top.

“I feel very fortunate,” Sharp said, recalling his trade to the Hawks after losing in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final in 2005. “It was a tough move at the time. But it certainly worked out for the best.”

South is well worth game after North raises spades.

Declarer can see three losers: one spade and two hearts. But he also has a potential diamond loser.

An inexperienced player would bank everything on the diamond finesse, but a better player would see that he does not need it to win.

After taking the third trick, South cashes his second high trump, plays off dummy’s club winners, and ruffs a club in his hand. Let’s assume West discards a heart. Now declarer exits with a trump.

West wins, but is endplayed. If he leads a diamond, it is away from the queen. If he plays a heart, South ruffs in one hand and sluffs his diamond loser from the other.

Cold sores caused by dormant virus that suddenly awakes Dear Doctor K: I get painful cold sores in my mouth every couple of weeks. Why do I get them? And what can I do to make them go away faster?

Dear Reader: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) Types 1 and 2. HSV Type 1 is the most common cause of cold sores.

Type 2 more often causes genital herpes, but it can also produce cold sores.

HSV spreads easily from person to person; at least half of all adults are infected with the virus. Once you are infected with HSV, you have the infection permanently.

The virus lies “sleeping” inside the nerves, causing no symptoms most of the time.

In some people, the virus

Cold sores most often occur on the edge of the mouth, usually in the same place every time. That’s because the virus lives in the nerves that lead to that spot on the skin.

A cold sore usually begins with a slight tenderness or tingling. It develops into a painful, swollen red lump.

During this time, the virus in the sore is highly contagious.

After a day or two, the area blisters, bursts and

crusts over. Then the yellow crust peels away and secretes a clear liquid.

It can take up to two weeks for the sore to heal.

The following conditions or circumstances seem to cause cold sores to reappear: anxiety, stress, sunburn, hormonal changes and physical exhaustion. Cold sores also often develop when you have a fever, which is why people sometimes call cold sores “fever blisters.”

Cold sores go away by themselves and most of the time don’t need treatment.

There are two types of treatment. There are pills and ointments or solutions to put on the sore when it first appears, in order to make it go

away faster. There also are pills to keep cold sores from coming back as often, for people who get them frequently.

The treatments (pills or ointments) to make cold sores go away faster have to be started at the very first sign -- the tingling or unpleasant feeling I noted earlier -- before the skin starts to change. Even when treatment is begun early, studies find that it shaves off less than a day from what would have been the natural resolution of the sore. The pills I generally recommend are one of two antiviral drugs, taken just for one day: famciclovir and valacyclovir.

The liquids that you put directly on the sore include

acyclovir, penciclovir, benzalkonium chloride and docosanol. The latter two are available over-the-counter.

Over-the-counter anesthetics like benzocaine can numb the skin and help relieve pain and discomfort.

Applying ice at the first sign of a cold sore may also help shorten the duration or avert a full-blown sore.

Finally, when you do have a cold sore, keep your hands away from your eyes. HSV infection of the eye is rare, but it can be serious if it occurs.
