Donations flow in for tornado victims

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Clothing, food and monetary donations continue to flow in for Coal City tornado victims.

Cathy Milne, with Help For Hope at 630 S. Broadway St. in Coal City, hopes to have a truckload arrive by Thursday filled with food, clothing and other supplies for tornado victims. The food is hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, where the the disaster relief nonprofit, Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., is based, Milne said.

“Our goal is to help people in their time of need. No one will be turned away,” Milne said. “There’s a reason if they’re coming here for help.

I know how hard it is to ask for help.”

Julie Buck, executive director for Community Foundation of Grundy County, said the local organization is estimated to have raised almost $10,000 for victims as of Wednesday afternoon through its online donation site.

She said her cellphone – which notifies her via email each time the foundation receives a new donation – continually went off Wednesday.

“It’s been nice and steady,” said Buck, who first posted a call for donations to social media about 11 p.m. Monday.

While donations are mostly flowing in from the Chicago area, Buck said there are others coming from Indiana and as far as Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.

While individual checks were handed out in 2013 who lost homes in the Diamond tornado, Buck said it’s unclear at this time how the money will be spent this year.

Coal City tornado most powerful to hit area since 1990 Plainfield twister

and LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A bathtub, bicycle and living room chair were just a few of the items lifted from destructed homes in the Richards Crossing subdivision of Coal City, and dropped 50 to 100 yards south in an open field across the street.

Homeowners and their helpers tiptoed Wednesday through the bed of debris – equal parts mud and wood, sprinkled with nails and insulation – scattered across 20 acres of land, with a hope of salvaging anything at all.

Abbie Norris, 19, said she was just trying to find things she could keep. Her parents moved the family in their home eight years ago. Now, the two above-ground floors of the Norris home are a pile of rubble.

Packing 160-mile-per-hour winds, the tornado that struck Coal City about 10 p.m. Monday was the most powerful to hit the region since the August 1990 tornado in Plainfield, according to the National Weather Service.

DAY ONE OF THEIR NEW JOURNEY Kent Bugg and his family face rebuilding their home while fighting cancer

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – On Jan. 2, Kent Bugg started sharing on a blog the story of his daughter Megan’s fight with stage 4 cancer.

There is no way Bugg, superintendent of Coal City Community Unit School District #1, could have known that on day 172 of her journey, he would be writing about a tornado that would rip through the family’s home.

“It made her cry just looking at it,” he said of Megan’s first look at the damage as she, her mother and her sister came up from the basement after an EF3 tornado hit Coal City Monday night. “It’s hard to not to be able to come home to her sanctuary.”

Readers have come to know through the daily blog posts the Bugg family in a way most wouldn’t. They’ve read about Megan’s fight against alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, her stays in the hospital as she received numerous chemotherapy treatments, and as she battled illness caused by the medicines given to save her life.

And they learned that throughout the difficult times

and treatments, Megan found comfort in going home.

Bugg and his wife, Deb, spent Monday taking Megan, 13, from one appointment to the next as she received the first of 20 proton radiation treatments to the left side of her head and radiation treatment 11 of 28 on her left forearm.

They were thankful to be home and awaited the return of their oldest daughter, Kenzie, who had a volleyball match in Kankakee.

Bugg said Kenzie, 16, had returned from her match, where she won all four games, and soon the weather alerts started. They took shelter in the bathroom in the basement to ride out the storm.

Two minutes later, after pressure made their ears pop and furniture could be heard shifting above, it was suddenly silent again. Bugg was optimistic as he went upstairs to check on the damage – until he reached the second story.

“Kenzie’s room was pretty bad. We lost the wall in both our bedroom and hers,” he said. “The important thing is all of us are together, all four of us, no matter what.”

Bugg said Hayden was one of the first to arrive Monday night to help, and was back at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to continue the work.

“They’ve all been here for me,” Hayden said of the Bugg family.

Locally written play to be presented at festival Liberty Arts Festival begins Thursday

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Abigail Strong was an independent woman who raised her child in one of the poorest areas of Morris between the I&M Canal and the Illinois River, where Stratton Park sits today.

The first and oldest Daughter of the American Revolution in Morris will be portrayed this week by Judy Miller as the Morris Theatre Guild puts on the production of “Spirits of Evergreen,” which was written by local historian Debbie Steffes based on historical data of Morris residents.

The play debuts during the Liberty Arts Festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday in downtown Morris.

“Abigail Strong’s claim to fame was that her father was a drummer in the Revolutionary War, which made her the first and oldest DAR,” Miller said. “She couldn’t read or write and she smoked a pipe.”

Eight other “spirits” will be presented by the actors including Edward Lyons, a Civil War soldier, George Kiersted and his wife, who is only referred to as Mrs. Kiersted, and Chief Shabbona.

The characters are all historical figures in Morris whose graves can be found at Evergreen Cemetery.

DesLauriers said he became involved in the play after his wife, Trudy, was asked to play Mrs. Kiersted, a doting wife who talks about how proud she is of her husband George Kiersted, played by Morris Theatre Guild actor Randy Lowery.

“I think it’s interesting to find the connections to 2015,” Kim DesLauriers said. “I ride my bike down Kiersted Street.”

The Morris Theatre Guild will offer three performances during the Liberty Arts Festival. Many activities for the young and old are happening throughout the festival.

The Grundy County Historical Society Museum will be featuring local art and photography. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SURVIVING THE STORM

One Coal City man trapped beneath his house was rescued by neighbor

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – As the storms rolled into Coal City on Monday night, Kenny Berger sent his family to a neighbor’s house while he sat at home with his Shih Tzu, Zola. As the weather got more dangerous and sirens alerted residents of the possibility of a tornado, he decided he should join them.

“By the time I decided to go, the house started pulsating and I knew I was in trouble,” Berger said. “I went to get in the crawl space and it was over.”

An EF3 tornado – with winds up to 160 miles an hour – hit Coal City just before 10 p.m. Monday. Officials said Wednesday morning they believe more than 50 buildings were damaged, but it could be more than 100.

Berger said it took just seconds for his home to fall in on top of him. “It was three seconds of terror,” he said.

Then came the silence – and the realization he was trapped underneath the house once his shelter from the elements.

“The quiet was the scary part, after it collapsed,” Berger said.

Four wall pieces fell on Berger and Zola pinning them together, bruising his body, and hurting his ankle, which was later treated at the hospital. It wasn’t long until he could smell natural gas permeating the air.

Bill Nicklas and Phil Montgomery, DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corporation’s president and vice president respectively, drove more than 90 miles Wednesday from Fairdale to Morris carrying boxes of supplies for Coal City residents affected by the EF3 tornado that tore through town late Monday night.

The DeKalb County organization was established to meet the short- and long-term needs of families impacted by the tornado that struck Fairdale and rural DeKalb County on April 9.

“We felt at this point, we’re about 2∏ months since our tornado came through, we’re continuing to meet the temporary needs as well as building for long-term needs. … We’re in a better position now to judge what we can spare,” Nicklas said.

What they spared was boxes of toiletries, paper towels, garbage bags, hand sanitizers and bleach, dropping off the items late Wednesday afternoon at We Care of Grundy County, Inc. in Morris. The nonprofit organization has served as a distribution hub for supplies needed for Coal City after the tornado struck Monday.

“The outpouring during something like this has been amazing,” We Care Executive Director Eric Fisher said.

“People are so eager to help and donate.”

Fisher said the biggest demand for supplies at Coal City are cleaning supplies such as paper towels, rubber gloves and bleach to kill mold growth. The warehouse area of We Care was full of pallets of cleaning supplies that were gone by the afternoon.

People also have needed flashlights to search for items in their damaged homes, he said.

Brennan said during the Village Board meeting he had been receiving emails from residents who are upset that Minooka gas prices are much higher than neighboring towns, sometimes by as much as 30 cents.

One resident Brennan spoke to said she buys gas out of town and would rather support local businesses.

“I agree with these people,” Brennan said.

Brennan said gas was 10 cents cheaper in Joliet than in Minooka on Tuesday. Trustee Dick Parrish said it was 14 cents cheaper in Morris that day.

Brennan reached out to a local gas station for answers Wednesday, but was not able to reach anyone. He will try again Thursday, he said.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the first of what may be more employee reductions was approved. Trustees unanimously approved a voluntary separation agreement and release for one village employee in the Public Works Department as a result of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed reduction in local government’s share of state income tax.

According to the agreement, one year of insurance on sewer lines would cost $82 and water lines would be $58 annually. Composer James Horner dead at 61

By ANDREW DALTON and SANDY COHEN The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – From the swelling-sea songs of “Titanic” to the space symphonies of “Apollo 13” to the bagpipes of “Braveheart,” James Horner’s singular sound graced some of the biggest moments in the history of movies.

It showed in the two Oscars he won and the 10 he was nominated for, and in the status of the Hollywood luminaries who were mourning his death in a California plane crash.

Agents Michael Gorfaine and Sam Schwartz issued a statement Tuesday saying Horner was the pilot killed in the single-engine plane that crashed in a remote area about 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles, although official confirmation could take several days while the Ventura County coroner works to identify the remains.

People who fueled the plane at an airport in Camarillo confirmed it was Horner who had taken off in the aircraft Monday morning, said Horner’s attorney, Jay Cooper.

James Cameron, who directed “Titanic,” the 1997 best picture that earned Horner his two Oscars, used terms from another of his Horner collaborations, “Avatar,” to describe the composer’s work.

“James’ music was the air under the banshees’ wings, the ancient song of the forest,” Cameron said in a joint statement with producing partner Jon Landau. “James’ music affected the heart because his heart was so big, it infused every cue with deep emotional resonance, whether soaring in majesty through the floating mountains, or crying for the loss of nature’s innocence under bulldozer treads.”

“To me, writing and composing are much more like painting, about colors and brushes,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 2009. “I don’t use a computer when I write and I don’t use a piano. I’m at a desk writing and it’s very broad strokes and notes as colors on a palette. I think very abstractly when I’m writing.

Then as the project moves on it becomes more like sculpting.”

Horner was known for including passages from his earlier compositions and from other composers in his work.

Horner’s other collaborators included George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone.

He also wrote the score for the forthcoming “Southpaw,” a boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal that comes out July 24.

Horner worked many times with Cameron, with whom he often discussed the role of music in film.

“My job ... is to make sure at every turn of the film it’s something the audience can feel with their heart,” Horner said in 2009. “When we lose a character, when somebody wins, when somebody loses, when someone disappears – at all times I’m keeping track, constantly, of what the heart is supposed to be feeling.”

Pollack, last original employee of NBA, dies

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Harvey Pollack, the last original employee of the NBA’s inaugural season to still be working in the league, has died. He was 93.

Pollack died on Tuesday.

Pollack worked for the Philadelphia 76ers at the time of his death, spending the past 28 years as the team’s director of statistical information.

In 1946, Pollack began his career with the Philadelphia Warriors of the Basketball Association of America, which later merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association, as the team’s assistant publicity director.

He sat courtside on March 6, 1962, when Warriors center Wilt Chamberlain scored a record 100 points against the New York Knicks. When the game was over, Pollack stuffed the ball in Chamberlain’s duffel bag and organized a famed photo.

Pollack wrote “100” on a piece of paper and gave it to Chamberlain to hold for the classic black-and-white snapshot.

“He may never have laced up his sneakers, but few have done more to advance the game, in the NBA or Philadelphia basketball, than Harvey,” Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil said. “He did what he loved until the end, and shared that love of statistics and basketball with his family, who we remember at this difficult time.”

the Overton home is no longer a mainstay in Richards Crossing. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, the most prized possessions Overton had found were game balls from his 14- and 11-year-old sons’ Little League games. He found a rain-soaked baseball glove his grandparents gave him when he was a boy.

A lifelong Coal City resident, Overton has no plans of moving when the insurance money comes in. Although his wife mentioned moving to a tornado-safe area of the country, he’s thankful for the family and friends nearby willing to lend a helping hand.

“When stuff like this happens, [being from Coal City] sure comes in handy,” Overton said.

“It’s just how I deal with things,” Norris said. “We’re glad everyone is OK.” She and her father didn’t cry, but Norris said her two younger sisters did because they were scared by the destruction. Norris said her mother cried when she saw the devastation as she looked back at the home from the street in the middle of the night.

Brad Overton, the Norris’ next-door neighbor, had everything but his basement pulverized in a minute’s time.

As he sat in the basement before the tornado touched down with his wife and two sons, Overton heard a whistling come through the vents.

The house began to shake above them. He grabbed everyone and huddled under the basement stairway before the house crashed to pieces.

“Then you just hear rain,” Overton said.

OPINION Pope gets into the ecology discussion What business does the pope have getting involved in politics and science? That’s a question that has come up in recent days surrounding the release of Pope Francis’ much-anticipated encyclical, or letter, on ecology. “Laudato Si” presents a comprehensive vision of creation and our responsibilities toward it.

“The church has the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel,” is what a document from the Second Vatican Council said about just this kind of thing.

“In ‘Laudato Si,’ Pope Francis is applying the teachings of the church to one of the most important and also meaningful controversies of our time,” said Matthew Bunson, senior correspondent for Our Sunday Visitor and editor of The Catholic Almanac.

“In doing so,” Bunson said, “he builds his encyclical on the legacy of Catholic social teaching. Like his predecessors in their social encyclicals, Francis is not concerned with settling some scientific dispute, nor does he claim competence to do so. Rather, he reminds the world that the church has the task of guiding discussions toward the deeper realities of issues and crises and to offer prudent and timely advice.

“To deny the right of the church to speak on such matters is to suggest that Pope Leo XIII should not have waded into the question of labor, that Paul VI should not have interfered with the scientists who had perfected contraception and that the church should remain silent on cloning and embryonic research.” In each of these cases, papal encyclicals have served to further conversation, prompted controversy and informed consciences.

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez Chad Pecknold, associate professor of theology at the Catholic University of America, told me a friend recently asked him the same question about what the church has to do with politics and science, et al. His reply? In the Catholic tradition, “all policy recommendations should be carefully considered, and in an encyclical such as this, such recommendations should inform Catholic conscience.”

But, he said, “as the Holy Father says, no particular policy recommendation ‘binds the conscience’ of a Catholic engaged in concrete recommendations particular to his or her own context. This falls under positive precepts of the natural law, in which case there can be legitimate disagreement about solutions and policies. This does not mean that when teaching touches policy considerations, it can thus be dismissed by any Catholic outright. It still must inform the conscience.”

As a philosopher-type put it to me: Pope Francis in his new encyclical “underscores vividly that the human person is not an aberration or threat to the environment but the center of visible creation.”

From that center, good can come, should we choose to be good stewards, directing our attention to gratitude.

Federal rules a burden on states We often see reports about how much government regulations cost businesses and individuals, but a new analysis from the American Action Forum, a center-right think tank headed by former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas HoltzEakin, illustrates another aspect of federal regulations: how much these unfunded mandates affect state and local governments.

Last month, these pages reported on the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s latest “Ten Thousand Commandments” report, which estimated the total federal regulatory burden, or “hidden tax,” at $1.9 billion in 2014. Federal agencies issued 3,554 regulations last year, at an average cost of about $15,000 per household and about $10,000 per employee for businesses.

But the regulatory burden is not limited to the private sector. “Regulation of industries or businesses tends to receive a majority of the coverage, but the mandates placed on cash-strapped states and local governments can result in far more profound impacts,” the AAF report states. “Since President Obama took office, his regulations have added $35 billion in unfunded regulatory costs and at least 75 million paperwork burden hours on state and local governments.”

Even these figures are likely understated, as the federal government often claims regulations impose no unfunded mandates on states – even when they clearly do – and only regulatory paperwork burdens that exceeded 1 million hours were included in the AAF report.

The 86 unfunded man-

dates imposed on state and local governments in 2010, primarily the result of the passage of both the Affordable Care Act and the Dodd-Frank financial reform law that year, were “easily a modern record,” the AAF analysis notes.

All these regulations require state and local governments to “employ a small army’s worth of compliance personnel just to handle the paperwork, to say nothing of other capital costs,” AAF contends.

It pains us to think of all the productive things taxpayers would have done with those billions of dollars and millions of hours, had governments not forced them to spend their money navigating red tape and pushing paper.

Redskins struggle in tough shootout

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Heading into Wednesday’s pool play at the 30th annual Morris Boys Shootout, Morris basketball coach Joe Blumberg knew his team would face some stiff challenges with games against defending Class 4A state champion Stevenson, Galesburg and Joliet West.

He was right, as the Redskins went 0-3, falling to Stevenson 56-22, losing to Galesburg 53-32 and suffering a 64-35 loss to Joliet West.

“I don’t know how much of it was our own limitations, or how much of it was how athletic and talented those three teams are,” Blumberg said. “It was a combination of both, but this was a very tough pool.

“Poor Joliet West. They are

a very good team, and they have to go play in the Maroon bracket because of the tiebreaker, and by one point.”

Galesburg, Stevenson and Joliet West all finished 2-1 in the pool, and the three-way tiebreaker was points allowed.

Stevenson got the top seed from the pool, allowing 122 points in their three games.

Galesburg allowed 132 and Joliet West 133.

Morris started the Galesburg game with a lineup of Jackson Shannon, Matt Walker, Jake Webb, Ben Larson and Jordan Miracle. By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Despite not having the lineup it plans for the winter months, the Minooka boys basketball team came away with a 1-2 record Wednesday during pool play at the 30th annual Morris Shootout.

The Indians dropped their first game, 55-30, to Burlington Central, rallied late to beat Oak Forest, 53-51, and then lost, 64-50, to defending Shootout champion Normal Community. That showing earned them a berth in the Maroon bracket Thursday, tipping off at 8 a.m. in the main gym. When the regular season rolls around, Minooka coach Scott Tanaka expects to have starters Joe Butler, Jonny Butler and Blake Parzych returning to the Indians’ lineup with hopes of improving on last year’s 15-15 record.

During the shootout, however, none of those three were available because of other commitments, and the only returning starter on the floor was Larry Roberts. Other players taking the court during the shootout were Kyle Graebner, Blaine Meadows, Jon Lamas, Hunter Hofmann, Keegan Graebner, Zach Schultz, Austin Pille, Antonio Milazzo, Adrian Paige and Torren Thomas.

In the win over Oak Forest, Minooka trailed, 47-42, with less than two minutes remaining. Kyle Graebner started the comeback by draining a 3-pointer, then Roberts got a steal and a layup. He was fouled on the shot and made his free throw, giving the Indians a 48-47 lead with 1:17 to play.

Oak Forest’s Frank Rollins then scored with a minute left and teammate Lance Stewart made a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to put the Bengals ahead, 51-48. With 10 seconds left, Keegan Graebner scored on a putback for Minooka to cut the lead to 51-50. After the Indians forced a turnover, Lamas hit a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer to give Minooka the win.

The Indians had some trouble getting out of the gate against Normal Community,

falling behind, 11-0, before Roberts made a basket and a 3-pointer to make it 11-5.

After Normal Community hit a 3-pointer for a 14-5 lead, Minooka got a 3 from Lamas and two from Pille to pull within 18-14. Normal Community went ahead 22-16 before Roberts hit a 3-pointer to make it 22-19. After a Normal basket, Hofmann hit a 3 to pull Minooka to within 24-22. Normal scored two straight buckets to go ahead 28-22, but Roberts

drained a 3 to make it 28-25. After the Ironmen went ahead 3025, Roberts hit a 3, then another basket to tie it at 30. Normal closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 37-30 lead at halftime.

Pille started the second half with a 3-pointer for Minooka, and Thomas later scored underneath to make it 39-37.

Normal took over from there, going on a 21-2 run to take a 60-39 lead. Thomas scored Minooka’s next eight points before Milazzo capped the Indians’ scoring with a three-point

Against Galesburg, the Redskins fell behind early, 7-0, before Shannon scored their first basket. Larson converted a three-point play, and a 3-pointer by Miracle, followed by a basket by Shaw, brought Morris to within 15-10.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, Morris got baskets from Halcomb, Jurasits, Shannon and Walker and a 3-pointer by Larson to trail 2821 at halftime.

Morris went the first eight minutes of the second half without a point until Lain scored to make it 42-23.

Halcomb converted a threepoint play and the team got a steal and a layup to make it 4928 late in the game.

Against Joliet West, the Redskins kept it tight early, trailing 10-7 after the first three minutes. Joliet West then went on a 17-4 run to take a 27-11 lead, which turned into 43-15 by halftime.

Stutzki had a pair of baskets and a 3-pointer in the second half for the Redskins, while Shannon had a pair of baskets and Lain and Olson each added one.

“When so many things were going poorly for us, it was hard to focus on just one,” Blumberg said. “It was a rough day for us. But, we are more interested in how the kids will respond to adversity than the size of the losses themselves.

“We want improvement from game to game, but we were so outmatched today that it was hard to tell.

“Maybe playing in the Maroon bracket tomorrow and getting some games where the possessions late in the game mean something will show us how we have improved.”

Because of the tornado in Coal City, the Coaler team that was scheduled to appear at the shootout did not. Peotone served as a last-minute replacement.

Burden of supporting family keeps teen under mom’s roof Dear Abby: I’m almost 20.

I have a well-paying job and live with my mother in a small town. My issue is I don’t know how to break away from her.

My older siblings still live here, too. They don’t help pay rent, utilities, groceries or anything. Mom and I pay for everything in a house of six people. My boyfriend and I have discussed living together, but I don’t know how I will ever be able to leave. No one else helps Mom, and I don’t want her to lose the house.

I know the solution is “everyone will have to pay their way.” But they don’t, and Mom won’t enforce it. I want to help her because she’s my mother, but I have my own life and I can’t stay here forever.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips How should I approach this with her? I don’t want there to be bad feelings. I don’t know if I’m selfish wanting to move in with my boyfriend, but I want a life of my own. – Stuck in the West Dear Stuck: If your mother can’t keep her house on her own, there are serious problems ahead for her. If she doesn’t have the income to afford it, she may have to find a job or sell it.

It should not be your responsibility to support the family. Your siblings aren’t

contributing to the household because your mother has been enabling them to avoid it.

Have a private conversation with her. Tell her you plan to move out, so you are giving her plenty of notice and a departure date.

I caution you, however, against moving in with your boyfriend if it’s because of a desire to escape this unfair situation. It would be better for you to be economically independent and have experienced living on your own before moving in with anyone. That way, you will be less vulnerable should the romance not work out as envisioned, because not all of them do.

Dear Abby: One of my friends who I work with is

getting married this summer.

She recently asked me for my address and, since we also went to school together, asked me to give her a few other friends’ addresses as well. So imagine my surprise when my friends all received invitations to her wedding in the mail and I did not.

I think it’s possible that my invitation legitimately was lost in the mail or it may have been an honest oversight. However, I realize it’s also possible that she wants to keep her wedding small and decided against inviting me.

How do I politely ask if I’m invited to her wedding? I’ve tried bringing up the subject in conversation at work, but I’m afraid it would be rude to

directly ask if I’m still invited.
