Morris keeping a watchful eye

MORRIS – As the area continues to get hit by rain, the city of Morris continues to watch rising rivers and creeks.

In Grundy County, the Illinois River near Morris stood at 19.03 feet as of 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Over the next 24 hours, the river levels are expected to reach 20 feet, considered a moderate flood level. Flood stage is 16 feet.

Kankakee River levels near Wilmington stood at 8.79 feet as of Tuesday afternoon – nearly one and a half feet higher than observed a week prior. Levels are expected to taper off later in the week, according to National Weather Service. Flood stage is 6.5 feet.

The Morris City Pool, located in a floodplain, continues to be closed because of off and on flooding, but the East Fork Nettle Creek has not overflowed into the actual pool yet, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday morning.

“We’re hoping it doesn’t, but the water is still going to keep coming,” he said.

Kopczick said there is water on some local roadways, but nothing in Morris is closed. The city also had some tree damage throughout, but no major damage from Monday’s storms.

Rivers closed

Local conservation officers are warning residents to stay off the region’s waterways as rivers remain at dangerous levels with floating debris and fast-moving currents.

This time of year is “prime time” for recreational boating, said Sgt. Mark Simon with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. But boaters should stay off the waterways at all times until water levels recede, he said.

“I know it’s summertime.

But it’s not safe right now,” Simon said.

cerns, conservation officers shut off the Mazon River in Grundy County Tuesday from recreational boating and public access. The Illinois River in Grundy County and the Kankakee River from the Indiana state line to the Kankakee County line was shut off from public access beginning Monday.

Law enforcement officers are typically out on the waterways monitoring conditions, but it’s too dangerous right now, Simon said.

“When rivers reach this high of stage, we’re not going to put our own law enforcement out there,” Simon said. “When even trained people like ourselves can’t safely navigate, then we have to consider closures.”

The Coal City tornado was a “highend” EF3 tornado – with winds up to 160 miles an hour, the National Weather Service confirmed late Tuesday afternoon. At least four tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in the region as the storm took its course Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS officials expected all along the tornado that ripped through Coal City caused more damage than the storms that passed through a section of the city and neighboring Diamond in November 2013. That was categorized as an EF2, said Ricky Castro, a meteorologist for the NWS. “We suspected already but [further surveying] confirms that is was [an EF3],” he said.

As the tornado whipped through West Daisy Place, two blocks south of Coal City High School, Halloran heard what sounded like a train rumbling through the neighborhood for 15 to 30 seconds.

“But the pressure is what got you,” Halloran said.

The group huddled in the basement with the home above them creaking, Copes said, their ears popping as if they were on an airplane. They felt a release of pressure in their ears when the tornado passed.

The tornado that ripped through portions of Coal City, Carbon Hill and Braidwood came through just minutes shy of 10 p.m. Monday, and moved southeast toward other neighborhoods before ending its path of destruction on Berta Road, where it damaged Coal City Fire Protection District Station 2.

Five people were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Lt. Nick Doerfler of the fire district said the second search was completed Tuesday with no new people found.

Grundy County Fair to feel state budget cuts

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The 111th Grundy County Agricultural District Fair begins July 1 – the same day Gov. Bruce Rauner’s June spending reforms are scheduled to go into effect.

Funding for county fairs across the state is suspended as part of the reform. Money toward fair prizes, competitions and rehabilitation projects, as well as funds for prizes at Illinois’ agricultural shows and agricultural education fairs, is suspended.

“I’m sad this is being done,” said Burdette Carter, Grundy County Fair board member.

“We’re not the only one. I suppose others could be sadder.”

Carter said county fairs statewide might not be able to reopen next year without state funding. As he looked at pictures in the Grundy County Fair office, he remembered how county fairs used to be the premier social event for miles.

Now, he said, as Grundy and other counties have moved away from being completely agricultural, farming has become big business. The days of a family having a 120acre farm are over, he said.

“We could be a victim of changing times,” Carter said. “If fairs die, it’d be a sad thing.”

“Where is that money going now?” Carter wondered.

Although the future of the fair is up in the air, it will go on as planned this year. The 2014 Grundy County Agricultural Fair had 3,477 vendor entries last year, Carter said, and it paid out $59,782 in premiums. Carter said he’s not sure how much the upcoming fair will pay in premiums until after the fair is over. Carter said he met Rauner last year and was impressed, which ended a streak of three Illinois governors who didn’t impress him.

“I think it’s a bad move,” Carter said. “I’m not ashamed to say I voted for him. But hopefully it helps people in the state who need help.”

The funding freeze is a result of the House and Senate’s budget, which fell $4 billion short of revenue projections, according to an email from Illinois Association of Agricultural Affairs Director Margaret Vaughn to Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs members. The email was provided to the Morris Herald-News by Carter.

A study by the University of Illinois Extension Department of Community and Economic Development released in February found county fairs bring $170 million in spending to the state’s economy.

BRIEF Forest Preserve District closes McKinley Woods

CHANNAHON – The Forest Preserve District of Will County closed several preserves Tuesday and canceled one program as the result of Monday night’s storm. McKinley Woods – Frederick’s Grove in Channahon is closed, as are Forked Creek Preserve – Ballou Road Access in Wilmington; Forked Creek Preserve – Forsythe Woods in Wilmington; and Evans-Judge Preserve in Wilmington.

All of the preserves are located in the county’s southwestern

section, which was hardest hit by the storm. The preserves will remain closed Tuesday, and conditions will be reassessed Wednesday, according to a news release from the district.

In addition, the “Reptiles of the Dunes” program scheduled for Thursday at Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Braidwood has been canceled.

Karin Evans attends last board meeting as school leader

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – State Sen. Pat McGuire dropped by the District 17 school board meeting Monday to congratulate Superintendent Karin Evans on her upcoming retirement and thank her for her service.

McGuire, D-Joliet, presented Evans with a certificate of Senate Recognition from the 99th General Assembly on behalf of himself and Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield.

McGuire said Evans has done an outstanding job for the Channahon district, even through “stiff challenges with decreases in state aid and a decreasing [equalized assessed

value] that eats away at the tax base.”

Monday was Evans’ last board meeting as she retires at the end of the month.

Later in the meeting, school board members wished Evans well and new Superintendent Nick Henkle was presented with a pair of Evans’ shoes by board member Joan Ferguson, representing the shoes he will have to fill in his position.

In district business, the board approved its tentative

budget for fiscal 2016. Revenues are likely to be 0.4 percent down from this year, Finance Director Mike Schroeder said.

The two big expenditures will be a technology upgrade of rewiring all four schools and installing a new HVAC system in Three Rivers School.

Those projects together with architectural designs for the cafeteria/multi-purpose room at N.B. Galloway will raise the Operations and Maintenance Fund expenditures 21.2 percent, Schroeder said. Without the projects, the fund’s expenditures would have gone down by 10 percent.

The Education Fund’s expenditures will be up a bit, Schroeder said, because of the technology upgrades.

But the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund expenditures will be down after the board instituted unfunded liability measures earlier this year.

Transportation expenses also

will be down next year, and debt services expenditures will decrease by $666,613 next year after the district makes its last payment on the bonds that were used to build Channahon Junior High School in 2001. The board also discussed ongoing problems with water damaging parts of the junior high’s terrazzo flooring.

Some of the flooring in the northwest hallway leading to the gymnasium was replaced last year and more effective

vapor barriers were added to prevent water from coming up and damaging the floor.

But more delamination has been noticed this year. About 120 square feet of terrazzo need replacement now, Schroeder said.

The board approved a $12,160 contract with Menconi Terrazzo for replacement and sealing.

The school board scheduled a work-study session at 5 p.m.

State disaster declaration given

Gov. Bruce Rauner, in town to see the damage firsthand, declared during a news conference around noon held at Coal City High School that Grundy County was a state disaster area. The governor offered state resources – mostly personnel – to affected communities.

He said federal aid is unlikely, but state officials won’t know until the damage is assessed over the next several days.

“Here in Coal City, the devastation has been widespread,” Rauner said. “We want to say thank you to the many volunteers, the state police have been terrific as always, thank you to the mayor here in Coal City. … This is what Illinois is all about: the community coming together and helping each other.”

Thankful to be alive

Halloran and Copes rose above ground to assess the damage in the dark of night with sheets of rain still falling. They smelled natural gas coming from a house across the street, and parts of that house had caved in.

The group walked and checked on neighbors. They were thankful to be alive, but amazed by the devastation, Halloran said.

“It wasn’t until we walked a few houses down and across the street, to the Rices’ home, that I looked back and realized our bedroom wall was gone,” Halloran said.

When Halloran was able to see the inside wall of the bedroom, he noticed a crucifix and rosary were somehow still on the other wall.

“It’s one of those freaky things,” Halloran said.

Past tornadoes and severe weather haven’t affected the neighborhood, he said. But as a precautionary measure in

In the coming days, Halloran and Copes will have professionals inspect their homes to find exactly what needs to be done. Halloran was on the phone Tuesday with home and car insurance representatives as Servpro employees boarded up his bedroom wall.

Three of the family’s cars were damaged. His son’s car parked a block over at a friend’s house was totaled.

Although it’s a relatively new neighborhood – Halloran said his family was one of the first four homeowners on the block 18 years ago – it’s one that sticks together.

Copes, Halloran and Coal City High School Principal Mitch Hamann were relieved no large objects were uplifted and thrown into homes. There are no above-ground electrical poles in the neighborhood, nor any uprooted decades-old trees as there were in older Coal City neighborhoods.

When Hamann walked through Coal City High School about 1 a.m., he found a band trailer had blown over and punctured a two-foot hole into an east wall of the building.

A hole in the gymnasium roof left rain on the gym floor, and there was window damage around the building, he said.

Copes, Halloran and Hamann said the first responders were phenomenal, going door to door to make sure everyone was all right. Homes in the neighborhood were spray-painted “OK” to signify that all occupants were safe and accounted for.

Estimating the damage

Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said officials won’t know the storm’s exact path until a full assessment has been completed. Teams from the Grundy County Emergency Management will be in the area this week to survey damage.

He said relief efforts started Monday night, while between 15 and 20 people sought

Community rallies to help each other amid survival Tornado damages motel, knocks down power lines in Braidwood

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – The storm that tore through Coal City also created some havoc at an Interstate 55 interchange in Braidwood where a motel and gas station were damaged, power lines were blown down onto the interstate, and three trucks rolled over.

One person was injured in the truck rollovers, according to state police. He was taken to Morris Hospital with minor injuries.

There were no other injuries reported, although 10 people and two dogs staying at the Sands Motel had to be relocated, according to Braidwood police. Three houses and a pole barn in the same area around the Reed Road interchange sustained some damage, said Harold Damron, director of the Will County Emergency Management Agency.

Damron said the Reed Road interchange with I-55 is the only area in Will County believed to be the hit by the same tornado that destroyed homes in Coal City. The damage in Braidwood was lighter.

The Sands Motel sustained roof damage, Damron said.

Braidwood police records clerk Lynda Miner said about 10 people and two dogs were moved out of the Sands Motel after it sustained damage.

“They were relocated here to our City Hall,” Miner said.

“From there, they went to the United Methodist Church in Coal City.”

The church was being used as a shelter for people displaced by the tornado.

Power lines were knocked down onto I-55 closing lanes in both directions about 10 p.m. in the area of the Reed Road interchange, state police said.

Within the next several minutes, three commercial trucks rolled over on the interstate, state police said. Two of the rollovers were listed as property damage only.

Daly St., Diamond ,at 9 a.m. Friday wearing boots and their own gloves, and be ready to work, Coal City Administrator Matt Fritz said Tuesday. A high-end EF3 tornado hit Coal City on Monday night, injuring five, causing damage and, in some cases, destroying people’s homes.

Nun who resumed Mother Teresa’s charity dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS KOLKATA, India – The Indian nun who replaced Mother Teresa as head of the Missionaries of Charity died Tuesday, the organization said.

Sister Nirmala Joshi was 81.

Her health had been declining in recent days, the charity said. It did not give more details about the cause of her death.

She was selected to lead the Roman Catholic charity six months before the death of its founder, Mother Teresa, in 1997.

She remained its leader, or superior general, until stepping down in 2009.

That year, she also received India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in honor of her service to the nation.

She was born to Hindu parents in 1934 in the northern Indian city of Ranchi, now the capital of the state of Jharkhand, before India gained independence from the British Empire.

Indian politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi praised her work for the poor in the eastern city of Kolkata, where the charity is based.

By MARK PRATT The Associated Press BOSTON – Don Featherstone was a classically trained painter, a talented sculptor and artist who became famous for creating the pink plastic lawn flamingo – the ultimate piece of American suburban kitsch.

And it didn’t bother him a bit.

Featherstone, who died Monday at 79, embraced the fame the invention brought him.

He died at an elder care facility in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, after a long battle with

“He was the nicest guy in the world,” Nancy Featherstone said. “He didn’t have a selfish bone in his body. He

was funny and had a wonderful sense of humor and he made me so happy for 40 years.”

Featherstone, who studied art at the Worcester Art Museum, created the ornamental flamingo in 1957 for plastics company Union Products Inc., of Leominster, modeling it after photos of the birds he saw in National Geographic.

Featherstone worked at Union for 43 years, inventing hundreds of products in that time and rising to the position of president before his retirement in 1999.

“People say they’re tacky, but all great art began as

tacky,” Featherstone said in a 1997 interview.

He was forever humble about the flamingo, and in fact, his wife often brought it up in conversations with people they would meet, bringing a sheepish smile from her husband, she said.

The flamingo even made an appearance on the silver screen.

A pink flamingo, dubbed Featherstone of course, was a major character in the 2011 animated movie “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

“The thing that thrilled him the most was that movie,” Nancy Featherstone said.

Former ballet star Albert Evans dead at age 46

By JOCELYN NOVECK The Associated Press NEW YORK – Albert Evans, a former New York City Ballet principal dancer and one of the most prominent African-Americans in classical dance, has died at age 46. Evans died at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital on Monday night “following a short illness,” said Rob Daniels, a spokesman for the ballet company. He did not have further details.

Evans was one of only two African-American principal dancers in New York City Ballet’s 67-year history.

The first was Arthur Mitchell, who is now 81.

As a principal, Evans danced a huge variety of roles in the City Ballet repertoire, from classical to modern, from George Balanchine to Jerome Robbins to Christopher Wheeldon.

He joined the company in 1988 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a soloist in 1991 and a principal in 1995. Evans retired during the spring 2010 season with an emotional farewell performance, and had been serving since then as a ballet master at the company.

“The entire New York City Ballet family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Albert Evans,” said Peter Martins, the company’s ballet master in chief, in a statement. “Kind, warm, generous, and always a joy to be with, Albert is quite simply irreplaceable.”

Friends and colleagues in the dance world took to social media on Tuesday to praise Evans.

A one-pan approach to dinner done fast

By SARA MOULTON The Associated Press As kitchen wisdom goes, I often think the best tricks are the simplest. One-pan cooking, for example.

We start by seasoning all the parts individually at the beginning of the cooking process, not the end. If you wait until the end, the salt won’t do its job, which isn’t only to contribute saltiness, but to enhance the flavor of the ingredient to which it’s added.

First in the oven is the asparagus so that it can be properly cooked and lightly browned all by itself and without crowding. Any time you want to brown a vegetable in the oven, you must make sure to spread it out across the pan in a single layer. Then the asparagus takes a break and the potatoes go in.

Finally the fish comes into play. Lay it right on top of the now-browned potatoes and

bake it until tender on the oven’s middle shelf.

How do you know when the fish is done? When a knife slides in with little resistance, the fish is good to go.

Butter and herbs are this recipe’s crowning touch. The hot fish melts the butter, creating a kind of instant sauce.

Simple, right? Delicious, too.

And just one pan to clean up.

Now that’s my kind of meal.

BAKED STEELHEAD TROUT WITH ASPARAGUS, POTATOES AND HERBS Start to finish: 50 minutes (30 minutes active) Servings: 4

11⁄2 bunches asparagus (about 1 ⁄2 pounds), tough ends discarded and stems peeled if thicker than 1⁄3 inch 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided Salt and ground black pepper 1

11⁄4 pounds Yukon Gold or large boiling potatoes, sliced crosswise 1⁄4 inch thick (leave the skins on) 11⁄2 pounds skinned steelhead trout, divided into 4 portions 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into thin slices 1 ⁄4 cup chopped fresh herbs, such as dill, chives, tarragon, basil or a mix Heat the oven to 450 F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.

On the prepared baking sheet, toss the asparagus with 2 teaspoons of the oil and a generous pinch each of salt and pepper.

Spread the asparagus in an even layer. Bake on the oven’s top rack until starting to brown and are crisp-tender, about 7 minutes for thicker asparagus, 3 minutes for thin asparagus. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

On the baking sheet, toss the potatoes with another 2 teaspoons of the oil and a generous pinch

each of salt and pepper. Spread the potatoes in an even layer. Bake on the oven’s top rack until barely golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and reduce the temperature to 400 F. Arrange the fish pieces in one layer on top of the potatoes, sprinkle them with the lemon juice, drizzle with the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil, then season with salt and pepper. Set the pan on the oven’s middle shelf and bake for 5 minutes.

Coal City athletic fields heavily damaged

That is definitely the case for the Coal City boys basketball team, which was scheduled to take part in the Morris Shootout starting Wednesday morning.

“We are not coming to the Morris Shootout,” Coal City basketball coach Brad Boresi said. “I actually was contacted

by Joe Blumberg, the Morris

basketball coach, right away this morning and he told me he understood if we didn’t come.

We had three or four players whose homes were damaged. I think this is the right decision.

The guys can do more here than they can playing five basketball games in two days in Morris.

COAL CITY – Coal City High School underwent a major expansion in 2010. Along with adding a new gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium to the existing school, the athletic complex was renovated as well.

Brand new soccer and softball fields were put in, as well as upgrades made to the existing tennis courts, football field and baseball diamond.

In the span of a few moments Monday night, the masterpiece that was the Dzuris Athletic Complex was reduced to a battered canvas.

The tornado that hit Coal City seemed to have a particular distaste for press boxes.

Those at the soccer field, baseball field and softball field were all destroyed, their remains strewn among the other debris on site. Fences didn’t fare much better, as a bulk of the fences that once surrounded the baseball and softball fields are now a memory. The bleachers at the baseball field look like they would be right at home in a Salvador Dali painting, and one section of bleachers from the softball field was blown a good 100 feet into the parking lot while another ended up in the retention pond of the neighboring subdivision. The dugout on the first-base line at the baseball field, although a solid cinder block structure, had only one wall remaining. The football field had just had a new scoreboard installed, but that is a twisted shell. Just before last season started, a sign commemorating all of the Coalers’ past playoff appearances was put up next to the scoreboard.

It’s gone.

All of this, however, is secondary. The focus of concern lies with Coal City’s residents.

“I rode through town last night, but it was dark so I didn’t really see much,” Coal City athletic director Dan Hutchings said. “I really have no valid information, but I know that a lot of stuff on the west side of the campus is destroyed. Right now, we are more concerned with the people that were affected. Sports is pretty much an afterthought right now.”

Although most of the damage was limited to the surrounding structures, the high school itself did suffer some as well.

“The south gym has some holes in the roof,” Coal City Principal Mitch Hamann said.

“We are getting some water leaking onto the floor in there.

About 90 percent of the fences at the baseball and softball fields are destroyed. We had just put in a new four-seasons room out by the football field.

Most of the windows in that were blown out, but the structure is fine.”

Perhaps Carrie Onsen, the wife of Coal City football coach Lenny Onsen, said it best.

“The new scoreboard at the football field is gone, the new playoff board is demolished,” she said as her husband was out helping others clean up.

“The football trailer that gets taken to away games was blown away. The dugouts and press boxes from the baseball and softball fields are gone.

Cabrera unfazed by difficult start

Adam Eaton is having a better month at the plate, but the Sox dug themselves a hole while he was hitting .192 in April, and his defense hasn’t been as good as it was last year when he played like a Gold Glove finalist in center field.

Adam LaRoche drove in a pair of runs with a single in the Sox’s loss Monday to the Twins, but those were only his fourth and fifth RBI of the month and his first multiple-RBI game since May 28. The Sox needed more than the 30 RBI LaRoche has produced in their first 69 games.

All of them got new money during the offseason, Cabrera a three-year, $42 million deal and LaRoche a two-year, $25 million deal in free agency to man the vital second and fourth spots in the lineup. Eaton, the leadoff man, got a $23 million extension.

“We’ve all been through difficult times,” Cabrera said Monday before the Sox opened a tough nine-game road trip

that continues in Detroit and St. Louis. “The expectations before the season were very high.”

Management declared the team a playoff contender because of additions like Cabrera, LaRoche, Jeff Samardzija and David Robertson to a roster built around Chris Sale and Jose Abreu. But no one saw this underachieving by so many in one three-month stretch.

The Sox’s pitching has been decent and came into Monday’s loss with a 2.52 ERA over the past six games. Having Sale will do that for you. But John Danks, who came in with a 3-8 record and 6.72 ERA in 15 starts at Minnesota, gave up homers to Joe Mauer, Eduardo Nunez and Kennys Vargas and nine runs altogether.

Ventura cited Cabrera for not letting the poor start offensively – he has nine extra-base hits after getting 54 for the Blue Jays last season – affect his defense. Cabrera was charged with an error he didn’t deserve when he hit Torii Hunter on the chest with a throw from near the left field line. Hunter bluffed tagging up and Ramirez, the cutoff man, spun out of the way as the ball hit Hunter in the chest.

Winds cannot sweep away generosity of community Mother Nature can be cruel in her unbiased ferocity when she chooses to unleash it.

We’ve been here before: The physical structures of a community torn apart because of powerful winds brought by a tornado. It was only November 2013 when Diamond was hit by an EF2 tornado that left more than 220 homes and businesses damaged and several people injured.

Monday night, another tornado stormed into the area and hit Coal City, right next to the area hit just a year and a half ago.

It was classified Tuesday as a preliminary EF2 tornado, which means it packed winds of up to 135 mph. It also caused damage in Braidwood and Carbon Hill. Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc, who had to deal with a tornado recovery of her own in 2013, said Coal City helped Diamond out in its time of need, and Diamond will do the same.

“We’re a tight-knit, strong community, all of the municipalities in this area,” Kernc said. “[Coal City was] here every day. And we’ll be here, too.”

We know cleanup will take months. We realize homes can be rebuilt, but the loss of so much is devastating for residents who may no longer have a roof over their heads.

But it is the attitude so perfectly expressed by Kernc that is being exhibited again by thousands in our area that defines our communities.

The prayers, assistance and generosity offered when it is needed most cannot be swept away, no matter how strong the winds.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton want to raise taxes. Gov. Bruce Rauner says he won’t support a tax hike until Illinois adopts fundamental political and economic reforms.

And legislative Democrats are finding Rauner’s “tough medicine” hard to swallow.

Some of the reforms Rauner has called for include: • Changing workers’ com-

• Place a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would eliminate political gerrymandering.

• Allow voters to vote on another constitutional amend-

Not surprisingly, these ideas are about as popular as tooth decay among the majority Democrats in both chambers.

Neither Madigan, Cullerton nor Rauner appear ready to budge. And they have passed budgets that are $3 billion to $4 billion out of whack.

So far, Rauner has unveiled more than $800 million in temporary cuts that will begin if a budget deal isn’t reached

by July 1.

Lets just hope the sacrifices lead to a stronger, healthier state.

Three-drug regimen works best for treating heart failure Dear Readers: Yesterday, I answered a question about treatments for heart failure.

It’s a big topic, and so today I’m talking about the medicines that are typically used to treat heart failure.

As we discussed, heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood. As a result, tissues and organs throughout the body don’t get enough oxygen. Also, fluid builds up in the lungs and other body tissues.

Taking heart failure medicines as prescribed is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to feel better and live longer. The medicines available today are dramatically more potent than the medicines that were available

Most people with heart failure need a three-drug regimen. This includes a diuretic, a beta blocker, and an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB).

Diuretics are also called water pills. They help the kidneys eliminate the excess sodium and water that builds up because of heart failure.

This reduces blood volume, blood pressure, swelling and congestion.

Beta blockers reduce the heart’s workload. At times of

stress and during exercise, nerve cells release hormones that stimulate the heart. One such hormone is adrenaline.

At first, these hormones cause the heart to pump both faster and more forcefully, giving a brief boost to the performance of a failing heart. But when persistently high levels of adrenaline keep “whipping” the heart muscle to work harder, the muscle becomes exhausted. Beta blockers reduce the stimulation of the heart, slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and decrease the heart’s workload.

When the heart is not being constantly whipped to pump faster and harder, it pumps more efficiently.

ACE inhibitors and ARBs relax blood vessels. They work on the renin-angiotensin-al-

dosterone system. This is an intricate system that links the brain, heart and kidneys via hormones in the blood. (These hormones are different from adrenaline.) The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system regulates blood pressure.

In a person with heart failure, the heart’s weak pumping activates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This raises the amount of fluid and sodium in the blood and blood pressure, creating extra work for the already weakened heart. ACE inhibitors and ARBs calm down the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, relaxing blood vessels and relieving high blood pressure.

Two other types of medicines are sometimes used to treat heart failure: aldosterone blockers and digoxin. Aldosterone blockers are another class of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Digoxin boosts the strength of the heart’s contractions. It used to be the main drug used to treat heart failure, but it was not as potent as the newer drugs and had more serious possible side effects.

In addition, research is developing exciting possible new treatments, particularly a drug called an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor.
