We’ve heard this phrase over and over again, on TV, in print in the newspaper.

Nothing hits home with this phrase more than spending a day with Gold Star Families, the families of soldiers killed in action.

On Saturday, I attended The Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial Dedication Ceremony held at the Grundy County Fairgrounds in Morris. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t prepared for the tears that would flow down my cheeks, or the sobs that I’d have to hold back as I spoke to them about their loved ones, apologizing as I tried to keep my emotions in check.

As I stood in the pavilion, where the ceremony would take place, I scanned the crowd with my camera. After all, I was there to capture images for the paper.

The first Gold Star Family I recognized was Jerry and Jeannie Terando of Morris, the parents of Army Sgt. Joshua A. Terando, who died Nov. 10, 2005, serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

I first met the Terando family when I had to photograph

It’s a meeting I’ve never forgotten, and likely never will.

As a journalist, there are stories and photographs that stay etched in my memory, and that will forever hold a place in my heart.

As I scanned the chairs filling with Gold Star Families – most who had their soldier’s name on patches, shirts, dolls and buttons – my gaze stopped. An entire row of family members donned in camouflage T-shirts sat awaiting the ceremony to begin.

A name adorned the front of those shirts, a name I had written one year ago, on Saturday, June 21, a name that was in a story that ran one year ago today, June 22.

The name of Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen.

Last June, I walked along the route that the hearse carrying Toppen’s remains would take as a motorcade brought him home. A motorcade that included the people sitting in

front of me Saturday. It’s a day I will never forget.

The urge overtook me and I had to speak to this family, a family I’ve never met before.

I introduced myself to Pam Toppen and her family, and explained I had covered the event, and while I could not, and would not interrupt then, I had to thank them now.

As I met and spoke to Gold Star Families from across the United States, I heard one thing repeated. They wanted to be at the event because they didn’t want anyone to forget their loved one. I was honored that they shared their love and their memories with me.

While I don’t have room to write about every Gold Star Family I want to share a few, so that our readers never forget. Debbie Brown, Gold Star Mom, came to honor her son, Stephen Snowberger III of Lexington, North Carolina.

He joined the Army at 17, and died at age 18, on May 11, 2006. His mom wants people to remember him as a man who still loved to come home and play with power rockets, and shoot paintball. A man who was called to serve after Sept.

11. A man who would give you the shirt off his back.

Bill and Gloria Collins, Gold Star Parents, made their first trip to the wall to honor their son, Specialist Scott Collins with the U.S. Army. They want people to know that the Army changed his life and he was proud to serve.

Lisa Otto, Gold Star Mom, was present to honor her son Specialist Norman Cain III, who died May 15, 2009, in Afghanistan. She wants people to know her son never considered himself a hero. He just did what he was called to do. She is proud of what he did, and proud of the family oriented man he was.

This Fourth of July, as I photograph the fireworks, I will see the rocket’s red glare, and I’ll remember the face of every Gold Star Family I met, and I will remember freedom isn’t free.

Morris Garden Walk 2015 takes a spiritual turn with visits to prayer gardens

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent In a shift from residential backyard hideaways, the Morris Garden Walk this year featured prayer gardens at five Morris churches and Morris Hospital.

This is the first time in the 19 years of the garden walk, the past 12 of which have been under the auspices of The Morris Garden Club, that home gardens have not been featured.

The idea worked out for club members as they grappled with what to do during an unusual gardening season.

“A lot of perennials froze this winter, and then it got warm too soon,” said club president Ginny Bellamy. “We couldn’t get enough people to volunteer their homes.”

The gardeners who were on the list for the walk bowed out after deciding their yards weren’t ready this year.

The garden walk was canceled last year because of a drought. Bellamy said members couldn’t stand the thought of canceling another year. That’s when someone considered using church gardens.

Morris Hospital is just a gem.”

The churches and hospital agreed to participate in the garden walk, each showing off their prayer, serenity or peace

gardens for the day. The walk was held Saturday thanks to sunny weather.

Sheri Cedzid, of Goose Lake, said she had no idea the gardens were not at homes this year until she saw a sign outside the First Presbyterian

Church’s gardens while visiting.

“I try to go every year,” she said. “It’s always nice to see all the work people put into their gardens.”

Cedzid said she thought the church’s gardens were beauti-

ful. Although First Presbyterian does not have an official “prayer garden,” its flowers and greenery wrap around the front, sides and back of the church.

Maris Rae Davidson and Marian Darlington, both of Morris, also said they enjoyed visiting the gardens. They saw many plants they liked and wished each one had a tag to identify it for them.

“It’s nice with the trees and the huge hostas,” Davidson said at the First Christian Church’s prayer garden. “I think they’ve got a very good variety for a smaller area. It’s very peaceful and serene.”

Gold Star Families MORRIS – On Saturday hundreds of motorcycles rode into Morris to honor those who have their names carved into the The Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial in Marseilles.

They also paid honor to those left behind, the Gold Star Families, many of them present to hear the reading of the 53 names added to the wall. Gold Star families are survivors of soldiers killed in combat.

MORRIS – As the eighth grade class of 1990 graduated from Immaculate Conception School they left a piece of themselves behind, letters in a plastic milk jug they would open 25 years later.

On Saturday, about nine of the class of more than 20 gathered in front of their school, anxious to see what they’d find as they dug up the time capsule.

“It was the 100th class to graduate from ICS and we wanted to do something,” their eighth-grade teacher Janine Petric said. “We used a milk jug because we had studied ecology and knew the plastic wouldn’t degrade.”

Indeed, the milk jug was still there, in dirt so deep that Chris Danek, Class of 1990, stood in a hole up to his knees as he dug around for it earlier in the week to make sure it was the right location before everyone showed up to open it.

Principal Kim DesLauriers, who was principal at the time the capsule was buried, said he had completely forgotten about it until he was approached by Danek and Paige Cherven.

He joked with the students that if he realized he’d still be at the school, he would have taken better notes about its location.

Using a photograph that ran in the Morris Daily Herald at the time, they deciphered that it was buried right in front of the flagpole – the only

different location.

Danek said over the years more dirt was piled on top of the time capsule making it even harder to locate, but he didn’t give up until he found it.

On Saturday it had been replaced in front of the new flag pole and the students along with their teachers, Petric and Loreen Vlk pulled the muddy, smashed container from the earth and proceeded to cut it open with scissors to find the treasured letters inside.

Vlk and Petric stood laughing as they read Danek’s prediction for 2015. His prediction led off with the line “If the world is still here” and included lines like fire and brimstone, and he predicted the Catholic Church would be fighting. He said his prediction wasn’t all accurate, but some parts were “kind of true”.

Elizabeth Talarico read her prediction and laughed with her former classmates when she realized her prediction was pretty accurate.

“My prediction was I could do great things, but I would probably be a regular attorney,” she said.

Letters prove to be a link to the past Best Price Bankruptcy 7

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The construction of a private corporate jet hangar at Morris Municipal Airport is inching closer to takeoff after a productive meeting Friday. The Morris Airport Committee met with Rolf Helland, president of Illinois Truck and Equipment Rentals, and partner Vlado Lenoch, who wants to build an 80-by-100 foot private hangar just south of the airport’s existing corporate hangar. Helland said he’d like to have the hangar constructed by winter. The Morris Airport Layout Plan, most recently updated in 2007, had the area designated for a hangar sometime in the future, airport manager Jeff Vogen said. There’s already gravel in place where the structure would be built.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said the construction of a private corporate hangar would streamline the process of potentially adding more in the future, because this project would lay the framework for others. Committee members want the project to move forward because it will free up space in the Morris public corporate hangar and allow things to run smoother when executives fly into Morris.

It’s the second private hanger in Morris Airport history, Vogen said. The first hangar’s lease was defaulted on and became Morris’ public hangar.

The meeting Friday mostly discussed the hangar’s proposed location and everything required of it. It would be about 30 feet tall and have 10 feet of space around all four sides that are included in the

land lease. Morris Fire Marshal Bob Coleman informed Helland and Lenoch of fire protection requirements.

The water, sewer, electric and gas would hook up to the airport’s utilities for a fee. Parties agreed there would be minimal use, so no major additions are needed. Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said the utilities portion of deals such as this usually don’t go so smoothly.

The committee was unable to give Helland and Lenoch price estimates for the land lease because there’s a lack of recent comparisons from area airports. The next step will be getting the property appraised.

The city will then try to reach an agreement with Helland and Lenoch. The parties spoke of a 20-year land lease with an option for a 10-year extension after the 20 years is up, but nothing is close to final.

Helland and Lenoch wondered how long the 10-year extensions could continue. Vogen said the Federal Aviation Authority typically approves 20-year corporate hangar land leases with no problem, and after that, 10-year extensions can continue if there’s mutual interest. Belt said it’s important to agree on a final number of possible extensions, because the hangar will be there long after all involved have left their roles.

“An agreement to agree in the future, legally, means nothing,” Belt said. “We can put provisions in the agreement to agree again in the future, but it has to have some kind of end date.”

When the agreement ends, the city can do what it wants with the hangar and the land.

Donna Baker in 1972 and together they raised two children. He owned Pooches Standard Station in Seneca for many years. He also worked for Pfeifer trucking in Mazon and also had a wrecker service. During the winter months Pooch and Donna spent time in Arizona where he enjoyed hiking, playing music, and enjoy life. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his wife. He loved woodworking and dancing. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. He was the most giving and thoughtful person; he put everyone else’s needs before his own. He was a very loving husband and father.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna; two children, Sean (Josephine) Poyner of Seneca and Shannon (Tim) Stiles of Seneca; five grandchildren, Taylor (Jess Miller) Poyner of Seneca, Alyson Poyner of Seneca, Chad Moyer of Streator, Malorie Poyner of Seneca, and Callen Poyner of Seneca; four siblings, Oval (Norma) Poyner of London, KY, Everet (Ruth) Poyner of Pittsfield, IL, Ronnie (Trudy) Poyner of Mazon, and Lonnie Poyner of Morris; and several nieces and nephews. Billie Joe Tincher, 71, of Morris, passed away Thursday morning, June 18, 2015, with his family by his side.

Born July 24, 1943, in East Chicago, Indiana, he was the son of the late Joe and Druscilla (Butcher) Tincher.

Billie was a graduate of Oblong High School with the class of 1960. On November 25, 1963, he married Evelyn (Mefford) Leads. On July 8, 1969, he married Barbara A. Black whom preceded him in death. He enjoyed spending time camping, tinkering in his garage and anything motorcycles.

He loved attending baseball and basketball practices and games that his grandchildren were part of. He loved visiting with his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid member of the Moose Lodge.

Delphine worked for Walmart in Morris for many years after retirement. She had a passion for art with her artistic skills dating back to WWII and creating commercial art for war bonds.

Survived by one son, Craig Zeedyk of Evansville, IN; and one daughter, Pam (Robert) Gehrke of Libertyville, IL; four grandchildren, Zachary and Kallen Zeedyk, Sarah (Heath) Rosten and Mark (Eileen) Bush; three great-grandchildren, Ellianah Rosten and Nicolas and Alivia Bush. Preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her parents and one sister, Dolores Murrach.

Church members hope gardens can provide peace to visitors • GARDENS

Continued from page 3 “I think it’s inviting,” Darlington said. “I love it. It reminds me of the song, ‘In the Garden.’ ” First Christian Church’s Karen Gronski said church member Kristine Simon designed the church’s recessed prayer garden in 2005 from unused space.

It’s located off the main building entrance and follows the natural dip of the landscape.

“It’s a good place to go for quiet and beauty and a place to sit and pray,” Gronski said.

Gardens and nature are great places to feel the presence of God, she added.

“You cannot look at this beauty and creativity in nature and not know a creator had a hand in it,” she said.

The First United Methodist Church’s peace garden wraps around the church and extends to its parsonages.

Member Diane Sprole said

it began more than 20 years ago and includes several memorials.

She wishes it to be place of peace and spirituality in the heart of downtown.

Sprole said she often sees people in the gardens walking around or sitting on the shaded bench under the crabapple trees.

Judy Stemen and Beth Hobby maintain the Living Waters Prayer Garden at Peace Lutheran Church.

Stemen said its garden also is open to the public and is accessible from Lisbon Road.

“It offers visitors a special measure of peace and solitude in an outdoor location,” she said.

The Garden Walk’s base was at the south Morris Area Public Library garden, where garden club members also held a raffle and their annual flower show.

Ginny Bellamy won Best of Show for her mauve clematis.

Immaculate Conception Church also participated in this year’s garden walk.

There was Minooka, which reached a Class 4A sectional title game after starting the season 3-10.

Coal City rolled through the regular season and won the Interstate Eight Conference title, only to run into a red-hot Herscher team in the Class 2A regional title game.

M o r r i s , S e n e c a , G a r dner-South Wilmington and Newark also lost in the regional, but all had players who stood out.

That said, here is the Morris Herald-News All-Area Baseball Team for 2015, in alphabetical order.

For Hillary, a new Iraq War trap President Barack Obama’s decision to send 450 more American troops to Iraq has put Hillary Clinton in a tough spot. What will she say about the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria?

The answer, beyond a few boilerplate remarks, is nothing. There is no topic more radioactive in the Clintonworld psyche than Iraq. Look for her to avoid taking any clear, decisive position, at least for now.

No, it wouldn’t be hard for Clinton to stand against Republicans who have denounced Obama’s move as an ineffective half-measure – a “duct tape approach,” in the words of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Clinton can accuse them of wanting yet another war in Iraq.

It’s Clinton’s fellow Democrats who are the problem. On the one hand, the White House presents the new deployment of troops as part of an ongoing “train, advise and assist” mission that will help Iraqis fight the Islamic State without the presence of a large number of U.S. ground troops. On the other hand, some Democrats are increasingly worried about “mission creep” in Iraq and will not support Obama’s policy.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy is urging Congress to constrain Obama’s ability to wage war in Iraq. “I support the president’s mission to try to assist in the training of the Iraqi forces, but I’d be much more comfortable in supporting that mission if I knew what the limits of if were,” Murphy said on MSNBC. “Congress has to vote next week on a prohibition on the large scale deployment of ground troops, so that that creeping number of hundredsat-a-time doesn’t become a sec-

When Clinton is asked about Iraq – and that might not be for a while, given her avoidance of media and unscreened voters – it’s not hard to imagine her answering that the president is looking at all the intelligence, that he’s making a judgment based on that intelligence, and that she would have to know more to make an informed judgment herself. That won’t satisfy anyone. But Clinton might well decide that suffering a little bad press would be better than taking a strong position and having it blow up in her face.

Clinton’s Democratic opponents won’t be so cautious.

Both Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley opposed the invasion of Iraq back in 2003. They can both say Clinton was wrong then and is wrong now. The reason Clinton does not have to respond, at least quickly, is that she enjoys a 47.5-point lead over Sanders, and a 56.7-point lead over O’Malley in the RealClearPolitics average of national polls.

Anyone who thinks Clinton won’t, or can’t, stay away from the subject should ask this question: What is her position on the giant Pacific trade deal being negotiated by the Obama administration, a deal about which many Democrats have passionate feelings? She hasn’t said.

A good bridge player is a like a sorceress who dispenses happiness to her side and unhappiness to her opponents.

How would an enchantress play today’s deal in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond, and South takes the first trick with her nine?

There’s that boring auction again! It is the most common not only in newspaper columns but also at the tables.

Declarer starts with only seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond (trick one) and two clubs. But she can gain at least two more winners from the clubs, even if she loses a trick to the queen. What, though, is the danger?

Trick one made it clear that West has the diamond ace-queen hovering over South’s king-jack. So, if East gains the lead, he will push a diamond through declarer and West will run some -- perhaps too many -- winners.

East is the danger hand who must be kept off play.

To achieve this, declarer plays a spade to dummy’s king, then magically runs specifically the club jack. When it wins, she plays a club to her 10, cashes the club ace, and claims an overtrick.

There is one last important point.

At trick one, East should play his diamond deuce, not cover dummy’s six with his eight.

When one cannot play a nine or higher, give count. Here, East’s lowest shows an odd number of cards in that suit.

Use of vitamin D supplements controversial subject Dear Dr. K: My doctor advised me to take a vitamin D supplement. Why do I need vitamin D? Also, my pharmacy sells vitamin D in two forms: D2 and D3. What is the difference, and which one should I take?

Dear Reader: This is an area full of controversy because not enough research has been done. I typically recommend getting vitamins from food, but vitamin D is found naturally in only a few foods.

Fatty fish is the main dietary source, and milk, many juices and breakfast cereals are fortified with it.

We get most of our vitamin D from the sun: When sunlight strikes the skin, skin cells make vitamin D. But these

Other factors also affect how much vitamin D your body makes. For example, how far you live from the equator, the season and the time of day all affect how much sunlight reaches your skin. Your age, skin color, how much skin you expose and your sunscreen use also influence your production of vitamin D. The amount of vitamin D in your body is reflected by the levels of the vitamin in your blood. These levels can

be divided into the following categories: clearly low, possibly low, on the low side of normal and on the high side of normal. Here’s what we know: People with clearly low levels of vitamin D are at greatly increased risk for osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease, and should take vitamin D supplements. That’s not controversial.

Here’s where the controversy starts. Many studies also show that people with possibly low blood levels of vitamin D, or levels on the low side of normal, are at greater risk for several major diseases, compared to people with levels on the high side of normal. Those diseases include high blood pressure, heart disease, multi-

ple sclerosis, Type 1 diabetes, depression and colon cancer.

What’s controversial is this question: If your blood level of vitamin D is possibly low or on the low side of normal, does taking vitamin D supplements reduce your risk of developing these major diseases? My own view is that we just don’t know. Fortunately, research is underway to answer that question.

Until the answer is in, what should we do? A committee of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine recommends: (1) people below the age of 70 should take 600 international units (IU) per day of vitamin D, and (2) people age 70 and older should take 800 IU per day. If you can’t get enough

from foods and modest sun exposure, it makes sense to consider a daily supplement.

Vitamin D comes in two forms: D3 and D2. D3 is the form made naturally by the body. It is also the form most often used to fortify milk and other foods.

D2 is made from plant material. The Institute of Medicine has said that D2 is just as effective as D3. Other experts recommend D3 because it is the form most easily absorbed and used by the body. I agree with them.
