State Senate passes frack sand mining study bill MORRIS HERALD–NEWS SPRINGFIELD – The effect of frack sand mining operations coming online in and around LaSalle County will be studied by the state, under legislation sponsored by State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and carried in the House by State Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley. The legislation passed by a unanimous vote in the Senate on Thursday and now heads to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk, according to a news release from Rezin’s office.

“It’s very rare to have deposits of very high quality northern white sand that has the technical specifications most desirable for frack mining operations, yet this sand can be found in LaSalle County and areas around it,” Rezin said in a news release. “Because frack sand mining is a plus for our area due to the good-paying jobs it creates and the money it injects into local economies, we must make sure our roads and bridges can handle all the trucks and heavy equipment used for mining.

• Danielle P. Puerta, 27, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a failure-to-appear warrant for driving under the influence. She was given a June 15 court date.

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence. She also was cited for improper lane usage. She was given a June 22 court date.

• Edward J. Jones, 40, of Brookfield, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Thursday on a warrant for retail theft.

New Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor officially takes position

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Doug Pryor brought his financial experience to Grundy County on Monday when he started his new position as county administrator.

“It’s budget season, so I’ll be diving into the budget right away,” Pryor said Monday morning.

He sat at his new desk with piles of financial paperwork awaiting his time and vision.

“They gave me a list to start with,” he said. “There is a lot of learning involved with the county.”

Pryor was approved 14-1 last month by the County Board as the new administrator. The county has had four administrators since 2011.

While Pryor is new to a public position, he has a long-standing work history in the private sector, crunching numbers and working with budgets.

His most recent position was as vice president for the Grundy Economic Development Council, a local organization that works with businesses and government to bring more successful businesses to Grundy County.

A previous county administrator, Dan Duffy, also came from the GEDC. In his role at the GEDC, Pryor worked closely with municipalities and the county as they’ve worked together creating tax incentives to help businesses build and expand.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said Pryor’s work experience with the GEDC gives him the familiarity with the public sector and how it operates – which makes him confident of the board’s decision to hire Pryor.

“I feel confident that he will be able to walk into the role because he has worked with us before,” Welter said.

Prior to his position at GEDC, Pryor worked for Aux Sable Liquid Products, where he did financial modeling and forecasting.

He also teaches economics at Dominican University in River Forest.

“Until you walk through the doors day to day in the building, you don’t know everything that takes place. I look forward to learning,” Pryor said.

He said the learning curve is the biggest challenge he foresees as he learns not only how

the public sector functions, but also how it is allowed by law to function.

He said his strength is in the financial aspects and he would like to address the issues that have plagued the county’s audit for the past several years.

He believes current board

members have put forth a good effort in the forward thinking that is needed to accelerate the county, including the recent hiring of Human Resources Director Deborah Jankiewicz and IT Director Tim Doss.

“There is some good staff in the building and in new positions. The board has taken the steps to move forward,” Pryor said. “I’m excited to be part of that vision.”

Welter said Pryor is the final piece to an already great team.

“He’s going to be a great asset for department heads as well as board members,” Welter said. “He’s great at longterm thinking financially and with planning, which is where the county is heading. I’m sure he will bring innovative ideas to lay some issues to rest, including the audit findings that have shown up year after year.”

Welter said the board specifically set out to fill the positions with professionals rather than just filling the position with anyone.

Pryor is a graduate of Minooka Community High School and has been a resident of Morris for 16 years. He lives in Morris with his wife Jennifer, and his children, Evelyn and Ben.

Morris City Council gives voice to concerns Morris alderman seat remains open with no candidate chosen

Plans for proposed medical marijuana facility presented

MORRIS – The location of a medical marijuana dispensary in Morris remains undetermined.

As of press time, Morris City Council had heard a presentation by Greenhouse Group LLC requesting a Conditional Permitted Use to operate a medical marijuana dispensary at 2400 W. Route 6 in Morris, the former Rockwell Inn. The council meeting still was ongoing as of press time.

Senator Sue Rezin, R-Morris, spoke before Greenhouse Group began its presentation.

Rezin asked that the city consider other locations because she had received calls from people against the location.

“I ask that you find a location that works for all involved, and I don’t believe this is the one,” Rezin said.

The location is near two subdivisions that were represented at the meeting, but the portion dedicated to public input had not yet began.

“The dispensary is not open to the public,” Darin said.

Darin said the location would feature 24-7 surveillance with more than 30 security cameras that are linked to the Illinois State Police and remain on line for 90 days.

Darin acknowledged that there is a fear of the unknown when it comes to safety measures, but he said studies in California and Colorado show no correlation between boosted crime and medical marijuana dispensaries.

On Wednesday, the Morris Planning Commission voted 4-1 to recommend the council approve the CPU. More than 30 people attend-

ed that public hearing, the majority of whom represented opposition to the dispensary. But the vote expected Monday night by the council is only in regards to land use, not whether a dispensary would be allowed in Morris.

The state already made that possible.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded 52 licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois. The decisions were not controlled by local municipalities.

Greenhouse Group applied for a CPU permit once before, and withdrew its application in late April after a day care owner, along with employees and customers of a dance studio, submitted formal objection letters to the city. It was discovered the prospective facility was within 1,000 feet of the day care.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, day care centers or homes, or group day care homes.

MORRIS – The open alderman seat in the Morris Second Ward remains open.

With a 3-4 vote, Morris City Council declined Mayor Richard Kopczick’s appointment of former Second Ward Alderman Julian Houston to fill the council vacancy Monday night.

Kopczick said he appointed Houston on the wishes of former Second Ward Alderman Ken Sereno before Sereno Julian resigned May 4 Houston after 34 years of public service.

Aldermen Bill Martin, Duane Wolfe and Jeff Wachowski voted “Yes,” while D o u g H a y s e , David Randy Larson, Valdivia Don Hansen and Don Matteson voted “No.” A motion was made by Wolfe, and seconded by Wachowski.

Hayse said he was unaware of Kopczick’s intention to appoint Houston, but wished he was made aware.

“I don’t know about everybody else,” Hayse said, “but I get off work about 2 p.m. I’m very available.”

The Grundy County Republican Central Committee on May 18 nominated David Valdivia as the Republican Party’s nomination to finish Sereno’s term following a caucus. Like Sereno, both Houston and Valdivia are Republicans.

Kopczick said he wanted to honor Sereno’s request because he was the alderman with the most seniority when he left, and a staunch pillar of the community.

Kopczick said Houston’s experience is needed in the managing of a multi-million dollar budget, and cited Valdivia’s lack of having served on a government committee.

“Millions of dollars are going to be decided on,” Kopczick said. “I couldn’t see why not [appoint Houston]. So I put forth [former] Alderman Sereno’s request.”

Under state law, Kopczick and the City Council have 60 days from May 4 to appoint Sereno’s replacement, and were not required to select the Grundy County Republican Central Committee’s nomination of Valdivia or anyone else.

“It’s the mayor’s appointment, under state statute,” Kopczick said to the council.

“The council votes on my appointment.”

Under the law, the replacement could have no political allegiance or experience.

Larson asked if the Democratic Committee were able to make a nomination, would Kopczick follow that appointment.

Kopczick told the council he’s never received a nomination from the Democratic Committee, and he wouldn’t make an appointment based on a committee’s appointment, citing state law.

Annual dulcimer festival returns to Goold Park Festival begins Saturday in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Gebhard Woods Dulcimer and Traditional Music Festival is returning Saturday to Goold Park.

The festival changed venues last year because of flooding in April 2013, which caused extensive damage to Gebhard Woods State Park, forcing the festival to be canceled that year.

“Goold Park was a reasonably good solution for an alternative site,” Diane Ippel, one of the festival’s founding members, said Monday from her home in California. “It is a little more compact and not as spacious, but we were able to make it work.”

This will be the 26th year the festival has been hosted in Morris and will bring in talent from throughout the United States.

Annette Lindsey will be returning with her husban,d David Lindsey, for the 21st time, performing as The Lindseys and offering the dulcimers her husband builds to those wishing to get a new instrument.

“It’s one of the better hammered dulcimer festivals,” Lindsey said from her home in Oklahoma. “It’s very well-attended and we enjoy the people who come. It’s like a family reunion.”

Lindsey said the festival is the perfect place to go for anyone interested in the music they perform.

“Even if they have never played a mountain or hammered dulcimer, there is everything from beginning instruction to those who have been playing for a while,” she said. “It also provides excellent entertainment; you don’t have to play to come and be entertained.”

The festival spans Saturday and Sunday and will offer entertainment on the main stage, as well as five workshops each hour on Saturday and Sunday.

An old-time dance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 516 E. Jackson St., Morris.

There will be a worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday on the main stage, and the festival will conclude once Bill Robinson and friends have sung “Safe Home” at 5 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to the dulcimers, there will be musicians who perform on other instruments like the guitar or the ukulele.

Vendors will be on-site, selling handmade instruments crafted by master builders, as well as food and beverages.

SPRINGFIELD – Last-minute Illinois budget deals are often the norm in Springfield – but not this year.

The failure on state lawmakers’ part to pass a balanced budget by the Sunday deadline sent a polarized Democrat-controlled Legislature and a Republican governor barreling toward an extended summer session – and with poor prospects for a compromise early on.

Unlike in past legislative sessions where lawmakers would suddenly pass an agreed-upon spending plan within hours of deadline, this year “had a different feeling,” said Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield.

“We had some momentum going there in May, and then things fell apart,” Bertino-Tarrant said Monday. “And we came to the realization that this wasn’t going to work out.”

The Illinois House is scheduled to return Thursday to Springfield. The Illinois Senate returns June 9.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain divided on how to approach negotiations concerning next year’s budget, which begins July 1.

“There are some serious, deep philosophical differences,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

“And [Republicans] never offered an alternative. They never pushed their own version of the budget forward.”

But Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said things fell apart quickly after Democrat-controlled legislative committees – the first step in vetting a bill before it reaches the House or Senate floor – voted down Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda items without batting an eye.

“Every vote for the governor’s items were along party lines,” Rezin said. “They had the votes. The debates were very long, very contentious, but they just stuck to rhetoric and talking points.”

Rezin said she hopes compromise comes soon, noting that the “pressure point” really begins in the middle of July – when the first paychecks must be issued.

“People will really start to notice when they’re not getting a paycheck,” Rezin said.

“Believe me, that’s not a point we want to get to.”

Morris districts continue to see savings

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Leadership from Morris community schools convened last week to update the public on the ongoing effort to find and explore the sharing of cost-effective services.

The Shared Services Committee meeting led to the formal announcement of an amendment to the shared transportation agreement between Morris Elementary District 54, Saratoga Community School District 60C and Morris Community High School District 101.

The agreement was approved by all three districts, signifying that regular and special education busing will be operated physically and financially out of Saratoga beginning in the fall.

“It helps streamline the busing process,” Saratoga Superintendent Kathy Perry said Monday.

The districts have shared for the past two years regular busing, but have now added special education busing to the agreement.

Morris Elementary’s busing personnel will be employed through Saratoga until the end of the 2014-15 school year, which is June 30. All busing vehicles and employment will be taken over July 1 by Saratoga, Perry said.

The service was thought of after it was discovered that a former busing service was picking up special education students in the same area and delivering them to the same school, and billing both school districts.

In the 2013-14 school year, Saratoga saved $380,000 over the previous year with shared busing, Perry said, and transferred $100,000 to the Educa-

Morris Community High School saved $85,000 with shared busing last year, over the previous agreement with Illinois Central, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Monday. MCHS buses fewer students, so the cost savings is less, he said.

District 54 Superintendent Teri Shaw did not immediately return a call for comment.

One of the biggest benefits of the agreement, Halloran said, is the ability to transfer surplus dollars from the transportation fund to another fund in need.

This year, Halloran said Morris High School was able to transfer dollars to the Operations and Maintenance Fund.

Next year, it might be able to put it in the Education Fund.

“It just depends where the needs are in a particular year,” Halloran said.

The committee also discussed the possibility of moving medical insurance benefits to a cumulative pool rather than an insurance company, after a board member mentioned the idea.

It was decided that a $20,000 estimated cost for a study to find the feasibility of it for each district was too much of a cost to pursue the matter, Perry said. It would require an extensive amount of legal work, she added.

8 Shared Services Committee amends transportation deal

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House of Representatives voted unanimously last week to honor two Morris police officers killed in the line of duty by designating portions of Route 47 in their honor in separate measures sponsored

by State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield.

The officers are Marshal Enoch T. Hopkins, who was shot and killed in 1878 while trying to apprehend two men in downtown Morris; and Patrolman Clarence Roseland, who was shot and killed in 1935 after interrupting a robbery in progress at Gable’s Grocery Store on the 800 block of Liberty Street in Morris, according to a news release.

HJR 71 designates the portion of Route 47 over Interstate 80 from Romines Drive to Route 6 East as the Marshal Enoch T. Hopkins Memorial Road.

HJR 72 designates the

portion of Route 47 over the Illinois River bridge from Pine Bluff Road to Washington Street as the Patrolman Clarence Roseland Memorial Road.

Anthony’s legislation directs the Illinois Department of Transportation to erect appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the names designating each portion of Route 47 for the two officers.

The request to honor the men was made by Morris Police Chief Brent Dite, follow Anthony’s successful initiative earlier this spring to honor the late Morris Firefighter James Allen, killed in the line of duty in 1985, by designating a portion of Route 47 in his name.

“The men and women of our police and fire departments – past and present – deserve recognition for putting their lives on the line for us each and every day,” Anthony said in the release. “By designating a portion of Route 47 in

JEREMY SIMS CRYMES Born: Aug. 6, 2005 Died: Oct. 30, 2014

Jeremy Sims Crymes, also known as Enderslayer (self-given), is the middle child of Kevin and Sheri Crymes.

He was born August 6, 2005, dying October 30, 2014. He is the beloved brother of Hayden and

Olivia Crymes.

Jeremy was an avid nature lover, being especially fond of vampire bats, giant squids, and wolves, spending hours upon hours researching the most unique facts of each animal.

Also an avid video game player, Jeremy loved Halo and Minecraft, and recently beat Infamous.

Jeremy only had 9 years on this earth, but he lived every minute of every day to the fullest.

He was an amazing big brother,

an amazing little brother, and truly the best son a mother and father could ever hope for.

His smile alone could warm any heart and his presence on earth will be sorely missed.

John Petersen, former CEO and Pitt arena namesake, dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PITTSBURGH – John Petersen, a retired insurance executive whose gifts to the University of Pittsburgh included $10 million for a basketball arena named for himself and his wife, has died. He was 86.

Petersen died Saturday after battling cancer, university officials and his family said. He and his wife, Gertrude, were living with their daughter in Savannah, Georgia, at the time.

Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg said the gift that helped fund the $119 million John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen Events Center also helped invigorate the campus and was a magnet for other donations.

It opened in 2002.

“You can’t really say that there was a cause and effect, but there was a general change in the feeling of the institution that I think did have a role in the generation of that progress,” Nordenberg told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Petersen and his wife also donated money for scholarships, a nanoscience and engineering institute, and an Olympic sports complex at the school.

And his daughter, Joan Chalikian, of Savannah, said her father believed in giving back to communities where he lived and worked and, generally, investing in people.

Betsy Palmer dies at 88

By JOHN ROGERS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Betsy Palmer, the veteran character actress who achieved lasting, although not necessarily sought-after, fame as the murderous camp cook in the cheesy horror film “Friday the 13th,” has died at age 88.

Palmer died Friday of natural causes at a hospice care center in Connecticut, her longtime manager, Brad Betsy Palmer Lemack, told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Palmer had appeared in films, on Broadway and in

TV shows for decades before she took the role of Mrs. Voorhees in the campy 1980 movie in which young camp counselors suddenly begin meeting their bloody demise.

The back story was that she was the mother of Jason Voorhees, who had died at the camp years before. He would come to life in several sequels that Palmer passed on. She would say in later years that she only took the role in that first film because she wanted the money to buy a new car.

Palmer had appeared in numerous TV shows dating to the early 1950s Golden Age of Television. Among them were such classic dramas as “Kraft Theatre,” “Playhouse 90” and “Studio One.”

Jo Botting, a British Film Institute curator and friend, said Harris died Saturday at a London hospital after Julie Harris suffering from a chest infection.

Harris played a major role in capturing the look of 1960s “Swinging London” on film.

She dressed The Beatles for both “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help!” — saying later, “I

must be one of the few people who can claim they have seen John, Paul, George and Ringo naked.”

She won an Oscar for “Darling,” a style-setting film about London models and media types starring Dirk Bogarde and Julie Christie, and a British film award, the BAFTA, for the 1966 Michael Caine comedy “The Wrong Box.” Harris worked on the James Bond spoof “Casino Royale” in 1967, and created costumes for Roger Moore’s first outing as 007, “Live and Let Die,” in 1973.

Recipients from Marquette Academy, Ottawa Township Seneca and Serena high schools were nominated by guidance counselors at their respective schools based on their indicated interest in a health-related field.

The annual event serves to both honor students for their achievements as well as to give them an opportunity to interact with a panel of health care professionals who have worked within their respective fields.

Students were encouraged to ask questions and tour various areas of the hospital upon completion of the luncheon, according to a news release.

“Our Foundation believes in the potential of our young people and has chosen to invest in them by awarding scholarships over the years,” Karen Brodbeck, the hospital’s marketing and communications director, said in the release. “We’ve given away more than $100,000 so far. Morris secures regional, walk-off style

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com OTTAWA — In her first atbat in Monday’s Class 3A Ottawa Regional championship game, Morris softball player Melissa Benson hit the ball hard off LaSalle-Peru pitcher Taylor Naumann, but the end result was a flyout to center to end the inning.

In her final at-bat, in the bottom of the seventh, Benson didn’t hit it quite as hard, and the ball went to right field instead of center. The end result this time, however, ended the game as Leah Lines tagged up from third and scored, giving Morris a 2-1 win and its second straight regional championship.

“When I came up, coach [Jen] Bamonte told me to just hit her exactly like I did my first time up,” Benson said.

“With runners on first and third and only one out, I was just hoping to not strike out.

I knew if I put the ball in play that something would happen.”

Lines, one of two seniors in the starting lineup, began the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. She was bunted to second by winning pitcher Abby Burns, the first successful sacrifice attempt by either team, and senior Taya Torkelson singled to right to put runners on first and third, bringing up Benson.

“I was super excited to be coming up to bat in the last inning,” Lines said. “I was just thinking about my four years of softball here at Morris, and I didn’t want it to be over.

“It’s nice that we won the regional at home last year and now we get to play the sectional at home this year.

We’re just taking it one game at a time and hope we can get a win [Tuesday] against Joliet Catholic.”

The Redskins play Tuesday at 4:30 in the semifinals of the Morris Regional against Joliet Catholic Academy, which beat Lincoln-Way West, 2-1, on Monday. The game had begun Saturday, and LaSalle-Peru grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Morris had runners on second and third with one out and a 2-0 count on cleanup hitter Ashley Phelps when the game was called, and that’s where it resumed Monday.

Phelps popped out to first for the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch scored Jasmine Cook to tie the game at 1.

“It was good that we tied it back up when we started back today,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “That made it even and we could go from there.”

Burns made sure L-P didn’t make it uneven again, as she did not allow a hit Monday.

She gave up just one on Saturday, and so finished with a one-hitter. She struck out six and walked seven, two of those on Saturday.

“It felt good to have a new game when I went back out there,” Burns said. “I knew if I could hold them, that our offense would come through.

It was a lot like last year’s regional title game. I knew I had to get the bunt down in the last inning. We had to move the runners up, especially in a tie game.

“I didn’t even know I hadn’t given up a hit today until my dad told me after the game. I just tried to throw strikes and let my awesome defense do its job.”

In the top of the third, Burns walked two batters, but got

out of the inning when Ryan Friend snared a line drive at third. She then retired the next nine hitter before walking the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh. An attempted bunt was popped to the catcher and Burns struck out the next hitter. The next batter walked before Janelle Brehm caught a liner at short to end the inning and bring Morris up in the bottom of the seventh.

On the other side, Morris managed just five hits off of Naumann, Cook singled Saturday, while Phelps, Emily Moore, Lines and Torkelson had singles Monday.

“This was just a good game,” Lowery said. “L-P had a good program, and we knew it would be a nail-biter. It was good to see the two seniors come through in the last inning. We did a good job of executing in the last inning.”

Minooka (22-13) will play Normal Community West at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Bloomington High Sectional at Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Cougars (24-11) came into the regional final having scored 26 runs in their two previous regional games. Plainfield South threatened in the top of the first when Austin Male singled to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicholas Mayerhofer.

Marco Escobar then singled to right, and Male raced for the plate, only to be cut down by a throw from Minooka right fielder Tyler Paulsen.

“That play was huge. He’s got a great arm. He’s got a lot of tools out there, and he’s an awfully talented kid,” said Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic of Paulsen. “You know it’s go-

Petrovic watched that play and the game from outside the playing area, as he had to sit out the regional final because he was ejected in a semifinal game against Joliet West.

Cougars coach Phil Bodine had no regrets about sending Male home on the play.

“We had our chances early.

The kid made a great throw to the plate. I know he’s got a strong arm, but a lot of things have to happen for you to throw somebody out,” Bodine said.

Sanchez helped his own cause in the bottom of the first inning when his RBI ground out to second scored Hayden Laczynski from third base. He led off the inning with a double

to left and moved to third on Jacob Null’s bunt single.

Cougars’ starter Shane Ritter retired the next two Minooka batters and settled into a groove. The senior righthander, who will pitch for Iowa next year, held the Indians scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. Null led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second. Ritter retired the next two hitters before Paulsen doubled down the left-field line to score Null with an insurance run. Ritter gave up six hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

“I knew before the game it was going to be a close game,” Ritter said. “I thought with our offense the last couple of games – I think we scored 26 runs the past two playoff games – I told them give me three runs and we’ll win this game, but we came up short.”

Sanchez, a senior righthander, pitched a complete game shutout, scattering five hits along the way. He struck out six and walked one. The Cougars only advanced one runner to second base after the first inning.

“I knew coming in that we were facing a really good pitcher. He’s going D-1 to Iowa, and I knew that if we were going to beat him that we would have to keep their runs low and we would try to have to find a way to score off Ritter. It wasn’t how we drew it up. We didn’t get the big hits, but one run was good enough. As long as I have defense and I can trust my guys to get the outs, I’m going to go do my part on the mound, and we came out with the win,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez pitched Minooka to an earlier, 5-1 Southwest Prairie Conference win over Plainfield South, going 3-for-4 in the process. On Monday, he did a good job of locating his fastball, allowing it to set up his breaking ball.

“I had my fastball. I was able to locate it. I’m not a guy who is going to overpower people with my fastball. What I can do is throw at the corners, and once you can get the corners and get them guessing, you can comeback with that breaking ball.

When you move in and out on the corners, you can open up the strike zone,” Sanchez said.

Schuler wins late-model feature at Grundy STAFF REPORTS Throughout the early part of the 2015 season, Larry Schuler has been talking about getting better.

In Friday’s late-model feature at Grundy County Speedway, he was the best.

The Minooka native took the lead via the high side from Scott Koerner and ran away from the field.

Koerner, who earlier in the night won a heat race, commanded the front of the field for the first eight laps.

But once Schuler caught him, he wasted no time sliding up to the high side and making a move. Schuler beat Eddie Hoffman to the checkered flag by 2.639 seconds. Baker was third, followed by John Nut-

ley, David Einhaus and Brandon Clubb.

A special 30-lap feature for the 4-cylinders saw Kyle Royster prevail in a cloud of smoke.

The smoke came from the exhaust of Royster’s No. 51, in varying degrees from light with 10 laps remaining to heavy at the finish.

Dan Schmeissing, who led the race from laps 11 through 16, was a car length behind at the finish.

Third went to Ricky Wilson, followed by Jim Gross, Jacob Theissen and Will Shepherd.

Defending track champion Tom Knippenberg overtook Joe Vinachi on lap 18 of the 25-lap event and went on to take the checkered flag, but a postrace inspection turned up

a fuel cell height violation.

The win was awarded to Vinachi, with Luke Baldwin second and Kevin Gentile third.

Fifth-place finisher Kenny Benson was also disqualified for the same violation that eliminated Knippenberg.

In the street stock feature, Tim Stewart held off a ferocious challenge by Christy Penrod to claim his first feature win of the season.

Stewart took the lead from Seth Blommaert on lap 16. Penrod, who had fast qualifying time, took over second place on lap 22, and chased Stewart down.

Third went to Rita Fields, while Cheryl Hryn, Paul Polarek and Butch Kolbe completed the top six.

OPINION Overlord lobbyist ban is turnabout Forget about the budget, forget about Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda,” forget about the almost unprecedented animosity during the spring legislative session between Democrats and Republicans. The agency directors received an order from the Rauner administration last Wednesday demanding that they and their staffs not meet or talk with any lobbyists unless the governor’s Policy Office had first approved the communications. The directors also were told to inform agency “stakeholders” that they didn’t really need to hire lobbyists anyway.

“We have continued concern about outside interests’ attempts to influence the use of state resources and state policy,” wrote Rauner’s Deputy Governor Trey Childress last week.

“As an extension of our efforts to curb the influence of these interests, we want to send a message loud and clear that constituents and stakeholders need not employ a lobbyist to voice their concerns or needs directly,” he continued.

“Until further notice, please coordinate with your department’s contact on the Governor’s policy team in advance of any meeting between your senior team members and registered lobbyists.”

When most people think of lobbyists, they think of them lobbying elected officials, particularly legislators.

But quite a few lobbyists have built careers exclusively lobbying state agencies. And many, many others regularly reach out to agencies on behalf of their clients or association members occasionally or even regularly.

So, adding a layer to this age-old process has the potential to really muck things up. It

And most folks don’t have the ability or the time to deal with our vast government bureaucracy. That’s why they hired lobbyists and/or joined statewide associations in the first place.

But there’s another angle here. The Democratic Party controlled both legislative chambers and the governor’s office for 12 straight years.

Rauner’s people obviously don’t want Democrats having contacts with their agency folks without them knowing about it. Controlling the bureaucracy is a very difficult task. But it will also mean that the governor’s office, which is thickly populated by former Republican campaign workers, will be able to lock out any Democrats they want.

Most lobbyists were shocked at the governor’s order, but some almost immediately came up with a plan to get around it.

Instead of contacting the agencies directly, they’ll ask their favorite legislators to make the calls.

The Democrats fully exploited “the spoils of war” when they were running everything. The Republican governor is now doing the same, but in a particularly Raunerish way. Legislative Republicans already are bending over backwards whenever he commands. He’s now extending his power over much of the rest of the Statehouse crowd.

Illinois needs change now When Gov. Bruce Rauner took office, it only took him a few weeks to realize that Illinois’ financial problems were worse than he realized.

Now after a few months of working with legislature, he understands the state’s political obstacles to progress are even more formidable than he imagined.

Rauner thought the Democratic majority in the House and Senate wanted to reach a permanent solution to the state’s pension and budget crises and to open doors to business.

He’s finding out that their first priority is to protect the special interests and the status quo. They would rather

take the easy route of raising taxes on all state residents than make any changes that hurt their staunchest supporters: state employees, union leaders and trial lawyers.

The legislative session has ended and there are still miles to go on what Rauner hoped to accomplish. The budget hole has yet to be filled, and it’s uncertain whether his key issues like workers’ comp reform will happen. He has already backed down on his right-towork proposal.

Now that the Supreme Court has nixed the pension reforms intended to save millions of dollars, some sort

of tax increase is probably going to be necessary. But Rauner is right to refuse to even discuss that possibility until lawmakers agree to some fundamental changes.

Rauner wrote in a column published in the State Journal-Register: “Budget deadline or no budget deadline, I will not ask the people of Illinois to put more of their money into a broken system.”

We’re counting on him to hold firm on that promise.

And we’re counting on voters to remember who is refusing to take steps to fix this broken state.

If a bridge player knows about endplays (this week’s theme), he will not labor long over today’s deal. How should South play in four spades after West leads the diamond jack?

Some players with that North hand would respond four spades.

They would mention the Law of Total Tricks, saying it recommends that with a 10-card fit, bid to the 10-trick level.

But that applies when your side cannot have the normal high-card values for game or when it is a competitive auction. Here, South could have 19 or 20 points, and the auction is not competitive.

Also, North has a balanced hand with a lot of losers. I think two spades is the correct response.

If West had led a club (unthinkable from his actual holding), the defenders could have taken three tricks in the suit and gotten off play with a spade or diamond.

Then declarer would have had to find the heart queen. But now he does not need to guess its location.

He wins with his diamond ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand), draws trumps, cashes his diamond king, and exits with a club.

The defenders take three tricks in that suit, but what can the one on lead do next?

If he chooses a heart, declarer plays second hand low and cannot lose a trick in the suit. If that defender returns a diamond or club, South ruffs in one hand and discards his heart loser from the other hand. Cool!

Parents welcome daughter’s boyfriend into the family Dear Abby: We have two lovely daughters in their 20s.

The older one lives with her boyfriend. They are expecting a baby soon. Our younger daughter lives with us, and she’s planning on moving in with her boyfriend.

We’re an old married couple, and we’re not sure how to treat our daughters’ boyfriends. However, “Gerald” is the father of our new grandchild, and we think of him as family. “Joel” is a great guy who is in love with our younger daughter and vice versa, so we think of him as family, too.

We stumbled through the holidays not knowing if we should get gifts for them. Joel is having a birthday soon.

in my cooking class named “Ethan.” He’s a year older, but I decided to make the first move. We went on a few dates and he was quiet, reserved and respectful. Overall, he’s a nice guy.

At first the fact that he’s only an inch taller than I am bothered me. But then he told me about a foot deformity he has.

He said two of his toes on each foot are attached and he calls them “webbed.” When he sent me a photo one day to prove it, I realized his toes were almost entirely attached and I freaked out. I don’t know how to feel. Am I being shallow? – Nervious in New Jersey Dear Nervous: No, I think you’re being foolish. Ethan’s toes are HIS issue, and you appear to be making it yours.

You say he’s a nice guy. Try to remember you are not dating his feet, you are dating the person to which they are appended, and a person’s toes are not the measure of his character.

P.S. This is an excellent example of why it’s unwise to send photos of one’s anatomy.

Dear Abby: My daughter is being married for the second time. Some of the guests were invited to her first wedding and will be invited to her second one as well.

As her mother, I don’t feel right about expecting certain guests who have already given her one wedding gift to give her another at the second wedding. How would you suggest we convey to this “select group” that a gift is not expected from them? Would it be proper to state something

such as “Your presence is our present”? – Mother of the Bride, Again Dear Mother of the Bride: NO mention of gifts should be made in your daughter’s wedding invitation. I agree that guests who gave your daughter gifts for her first wedding should not feel compelled to buy her anything more than a token gift for this one.

This goes for ANY guest who attended the first wedding, not just “select” guests, whatever that means.

Any discussion regarding gifts should be done verbally by you if you are hosting the wedding.
