A minivan sits along the northbound shoulder of Interstate 55 on Thursday after it was involved in a crash in Channahon Township. Four passengers were transported from the scene after the minivan struck the back of a semitrailer.

Crash closes Arsenal Road exit lane on I-55

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Four people were hospitalized when a minivan collided with a semitrailer Thursday afternoon on Interstate 55.

Illinois State Police Trooper DeAnn Falat said the crash occurred about 1:45 p.m. when the Kia minivan struck the

back of a flatbed trailer in the northbound lanes just south of Arsenal Road.

The exit lanes from I-55 to Arsenal were closed for more than an hour.

The driver and three passengers from the minivan were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, Falat said. The truck driver was not injured.

The exit lane was opened again at about 3 p.m.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Downtown Minooka was a mecca for local teens watching their peers battle it out for the title of Minooka Teen Music Fest champion.

Six bands from the area took the stage to compete against one another for prizes that included a $100 cash prize and the coveted headliner spot at next year’s fest. The event Thursday kicked off Minooka Summerfest.

The night began with an open mic session, inviting teens to show off acoustic abilities. Sisters Carmella and Nora Russell belted out a variety of music, with Carmella strumming the ukulele.

“We aren’t an organized group, we just like to sing as a family,” Carmella said.

The lead organizer of this event, Kyle McComb, said this year is different from years past because of the variety of music the bands are playing.

“We have bands that play anything from ’60s Beatles type music, to metal, classic rock, blues and reggae. I have a feeling that this was the best lineup since the festival started,” McComb said.

New to the festival, Nick Kemp-Bystrzycki, Tony Tessari and Luke Pope, of the band Fixed Emotion, caught the attention of teens and parents alike with their blues cover music. The group hopes to showcase their original work soon.

“We all three like to write.

We all collaborate by texting lines back and forth and by the end of the night, we have a song,” lead vocalist Kemp-Bystrzycki said.

Not new to the local band scene is group Wombo Combo, its members being Jackie Russell, Mike Potoniec, Jordan Nelson, Izzy Perez and Justin Weed. Russell screams the group’s original hard rock and metal lyrics, while bandmates

Weed said the music is all about the stories, stating one of the songs stemmed from stories about Nelson’s grandfather who was in the war.

McComb said this is the event’s fourth year, and this year a cash prize will be given to the band voted the best by the crowd. At the entrance, revelers received a ticket for voting purposes with their $5 admission.

The six bands featured were 2014 champions The Meandering Cranberries, The Monocle Project, How & Why, Wombo Combo, Fixed Emotion and Pessimist Prime.

This festival kicked off the weekend of festivities for Minooka Summerfest, sponsored by the Minooka Lions Club.

Summerfest is an annual event in downtown Minooka each June. The main street downtown, Mondamin, will be closed down Saturday so the community can enjoy a variety of activities.

Promoter Scott Lemke of the Minooka Lions Club said this year is full of fun for the entire family. Saturday kicks

off with a 5K race and a kids fun run, along with a kids parade.

On Mondamin and side streets, there will be booths of arts and crafts for sale, food vendors with homemade corn dogs and ice cold lemonade, as well as a kiddie game area with inflatables, climbing walls and games.

In the lower parking lot, the stage is set for a variety of talents such as a reptile show, and new this year is the Ron Swanson look-alike contest.

“We are really excited about the Ron Swanson lookalike contest. Registration can be done online or people can walk up at the event, fill out a form and enter right there,”

Lemke said.

Since Nick Offerman, who played Ron Swanson on the TV show “Parks and Recreation” is from Minooka, Lemke thought this would be a fun event for the community.

Water levels begin receding in Morris Relief may not last for long

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Area residents and businesses can breathe a sigh of relief as floodwaters recede in Morris.

After peaking at 19.68 feet, the Illinois River is on its way down, with the National Weather Service in Romeoville reporting river levels in Morris had fallen to 18.2 feet

by Thursday afternoon.

“Morris isn’t completely out of the woods,” Charles Mott with NWS said Thursday afternoon. “There is more rainfall falling and we’ll have to see what we get.”

He said there is temporary relief, since rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday didn’t amount to much, allowing floodwaters to recede before the threat of thunderstorms returns.

He said Friday mostly would be dry, but the rain would pick back up over the weekend. A chance of storms and rain will remain through next Thursday.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said the city will leave equipment that was evacuated from the public works garages along the river out on the street until the city is certain there is no threat.

“The garages face west and they drop much lower than the main public works building,” he said. “There is still water there, but it hasn’t entered the building.”

Kopczick said he is only aware of water entering the garages once during the April 2013 flood, which saw record-setting flood levels of 24.91 feet.

The mayor said the East Fork Nettle Creek, which runs behind the Morris Swimming Pool in Goold Park, has receded tremendously, but the city must wait for it to recede farther before draining and cleaning the pool.

“If you drain the pool now, while the creek is still up, it will cause issues in the pool by forcing it out of the ground,” Kopczick said.

“That is what happened to the previous pool years ago and there was nothing but problems after that, so we don’t want to do that to the new pool.”

Once it is safe to drain the pool, the mayor said it would be drained, cleaned and refilled before it reopens.

Because of heavy rains and flooding, the Morris City Pool was closed Sunday and was overflowing from floodwaters that covered the area. Although water levels are receding, the pool will remain closed until it can be drained.

GAVC student-built home has open house If you go

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For those in the market for a new home that gives back, Grundy Area Vocational Center will host an open house this weekend for the 22nd home just completed by students.

The four-bedroom, threebath, 2,039-square-foot home located in Fields of Saratoga in Morris received its finishing touches as instructors Bob Humbert and Matt Anderson and a couple of students completed the work.

“We had a couple of students volunteer to come back a couple of days this summer to help finish it,” Humbert said of his GAVC building trades students. “School was out June 2, and it was near completion.”

The home that basically doubled as a classroom for the past two years was built from the foundation up by students from the four feeder high schools: Morris Community High School, Minooka Community High School, Coal

“I’ve learned a lot of everything,” Rosak said. “If you pay attention, you can go far.”

Rosak will start his apprenticeship in the carpenter’s union as a result of the class.

“I wanted to know what to do when I own my own home,” he said. “I learned quick and had a lot of fun. I knew that this is what I wanted to do for a living.”

Rosak is not the first student to go into the carpenter’s union, according to Humbert, who said those students who took two years of building trades can start an apprenticeship without going to the pre-class offered by the union halls.

Although the home appears as perfect as the area’s other newly built homes, it wasn’t without flaws that were patiently corrected, which Humbert said is the class’s goal.

Students take two full school years to complete one home, learning and fixing as they go.

“Everything is new to them,” Humbert said. “The first time you do anything it’s difficult. They make mistakes and they fix them. They learn by doing.”

Murder trial: Man defending himself spars with mother

Born: Sept. 16, 1948; in Morris, IL Died: June 18, 2015; in Morris, IL Terry L. Gjerde, age 66, at rest Thursday, June 18, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born September 16, 1948 in Morris, to Harold and Charlotte (nee Hendrickson). He was a graduate of Lisbon Grade School, Newark High School (Class of 1966) and Illinois State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

He was a teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Morris, for 6 years, and he was also a security guard with Pinkerton. He retired in 2004 from Lyondellbasell Industries with 27 years of service.

Terry enjoyed playing poker, collecting fossils and computers.

Survived by his loving wife, Kathleen A. (nee Farrell) of 45 years, married on December 20, 1969 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris, IL; one son, Eric (Liz nee Bird) Gjerde; one daughter, Heidi (Nick) Burton; his mother, Charlotte; grandchildren, Reiter and Reece Bird; two brothers, Ronald

(Cathy), Richard (Allison); one sister, Linda Gjerde; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, Harold Gjerde.

Terry will be truly missed. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Ex-Mets owner, Nelson Doubleday Jr. dies

By TOM McELROY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Nelson Doubleday Jr., the publishing scion who bought the New York Mets and shepherded the team to a 1986 World Series title, has died. He was 81.

His son-in-law, John Havens, said Doubleday died of pneumonia at his home in Locust Valley, New York, on Wednesday.

Doubleday was the grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday, who founded the publishing company in 1896 and a descendent of Abner Doubleday, the mythical inventor of baseball.

After taking over the company from his father, Doubleday partnered with Fred Wilpon to become a majority owner of the last-place Mets in 1980.

Doubleday hired general manager Frank Cashen, who was the architect of the 1986 team that beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games.

The series is most famously known for Bill Buckner’s critical error at first base. He let Mookie Wilson’s slow grounder go through his legs and the Mets capped a two-out rally in Game 6 with a 6-5 victory in the 10th inning at Shea Stadium.

The Mets went on to win Game 7.

“His life is to be celebrated. He was a wonderful man.

He had a wonderful life,” former Mets star Keith Hernandez said of Doubleday on the team’s SNY broadcast Wednesday night.

When Doubleday & Co. was sold in 1986, the publisher sold its shares of the team for $80.75 million to Wilpon and Nelson Doubleday, who became 50-50 owners.

Wilpon bought out Doubleday in 2002 in an acrimonious split. They fought over the valuation of the team.

after the team was appraised at $391 million. Last spring, Forbes estimated the Mets were worth $858 million, third in baseball behind the New York Yankees ($1.6 billion) and the Boston Red Sox ($870 million).

The Mets released a statement saying, “Nelson had a love of baseball and the Mets” and they were saddened to hear the news of his death.

Ex-pitcher Ron Darling, also a Mets broadcaster, said: “It’s a big loss for Keith and I. A guy that we looked up to.”

NEW YORK – James “Jimmy” Lee, the JPMorgan Chase banker who helped arrange some of the biggest corporate deals for companies including General Motors, News Corp. and Facebook, died Wednesday. He was 62 years old.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced Lee’s death, saying he passed away “unexpectedly.” The bank did not give further details.

Lee was among the bestknown dealmakers on Wall Street. If a company wanted to go public, sell a business or merge with a competitor, Lee was often in the middle of it. The fact that Lee was advising on a deal was a stamp of credibility, in and of itself.

He co-led the deal to help Facebook go public in 2012.

JPMorgan was the lead bank on General Motors’ initial public offering in 2010, following its government-aided bankruptcy. GM’s $23 billion IPO was the largest in U.S. history.

Lee helped Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. buy Dow Jones in 2007 – stunning the media world at the time.

Lee was the lead investment banker behind United Airlines’ merger with Continental. He also helped General Electric sell off its NBC Universal division to Comcast.

In many ways, Lee epitomized the Wall Street. He wore pin-stripe suits, and

cuff links, slicking back his hair. He was all about making the deal – and he made dozens of them.

“Jimmy was a master of his craft, but he was so much more – he was an incomparable force of nature,” said JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.

Lee worked for various parts of JPMorgan Chase for nearly his entire career on Wall Street.

He started at Chemical Bank in the 1970s, which later became Chase. Lee was credited with creating what’s known as the loan-syndication market, which is when a group of banks come together to make a large loan to a company, with each of the banks taking on a different part of the risk. Loan syndications helped foster the growth of the private-equity industry, where teams of investors pool money together to buy up companies.

Business executives published tributes to Lee after his unexpected death was reported.

“Just got devastating news of my dear friend Jimmy Lee’s death. A great guy, businessman and family man. What a loss for so many,” said Jack Welch, the former chairman and CEO of GE, on Twitter.

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen called Lee a “friend and mentor to me and so many others.”

Lee is survived by his wife Elizabeth and three children.

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – About 157 families took part in We Care of Grundy County’s mobile food pantry June 10.

Originally set to take place at the Coal City Early Childhood Learning Center, the mobile food pantry was moved to the We Care building in Morris because of the possibility of inclement weather, according to a news release from We Care. A special thanks went out to the Seneca High School Youth Philanthropy group sponsored by the Community Foundation of Grundy County for sponsoring the event.

“Due to the last-minute change in sponsorships, we had to recruit volunteers from a wide variety of organizations. We thank everyone who came to help despite the bad weather predictions and change of location,” Eric Fisher, We Care’s executive director, said in a news release, “It was fun having a chance to break in our new building for the mobile pantry. Yet another use for this wonderful, large new space.”

DEVOTIONS Witnesses’ convention series begins on weekend

ROMEOVILLE – Jehovah’s Witnesses will discuss the keys to family happiness during their 2015 “Imitate Jesus!” convention at the Romeoville Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 800 N. Schmidt Road, Romeoville.

The Witnesses’ three-day convention series will demonstrate how Jesus’ example can give parents and children the tools to build stronger and more united families.

The program also will include a stimulating examination of Jesus’ famed sermon on the mount.

“Jesus’ sermon on the mount offers timeless advice that can help parents to better use their time and resources to build a more secure and loving family environment,” Kevin Jones, spokesman for the convention, said in a news release.

Jehovah’s Witnesses invite people of all ages to attend.The first day of the convention is today. Sessions begin at 9:20 a.m.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is free.

Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary donations.

MORRIS – Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris, 202 W. Jefferson St., will have vacation bible school from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday through June 26.

Children from preschool through fifth grade are invited. This year’s theme is “Camp Discovery: Jesus at Work Through Us.” During the program, children will explore five Bible stories that show how God works in His people to save them and how He works through His people to serve others.

Friends in Christ to start vacation bible school

MORRIS – Lace up those hiking shoes and get ready for vacation bible school at Friends in Christ Lutheran Church, 1228 Clay St. in Morris, the former Grundy County Home building.

Donations sought for ‘Price-less Day’ sale

MORRIS – First Christian Church will hold its 12th annual “Priceless Day” on July 21.

In preparation for the free garage sale, the church is asking for donations of unwanted items.

Last year, donations were down but the needs of the community remained. Donated items will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

July 19 or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20.

Items cannot be accepted after the following Monday.

Park on the west side of the church near the “drop-off” banner and tent. Someone will be there to unload cars – donors may stay in their cars. The church will not take any items that require more than one person to move. For safety reasons, it also will not accept cribs, windows, carpet, knives, paint, tires, saws or construction materials. Also, this year it is not accepting computers,

heavy TVs or VHS tapes.

All items must be safe, clean, usable, in good working order and free from odors or stains. Please sort like items and mark bags: “kitchen,” “lines,” “Women’s Large” or “Boys 3T,” etc.

Our players from both the sophomore and varsity teams ran the scorers’ tables and the books and the scoreboards and did a good job with that. Our freshman coach, Amy Carr, ran the consessions and hospitality room. She and the girls from the freshman team were busy, but they did a great job, too.

One aspect of the tourmaG r u n dy C ment that nearly all the coachr o te es liked is it was held during the week instead of on a weekend.

“I have had a lot of coaches tell me that as long as we are still in the middle of the week, they are coming back,” Carey said. “A lot of the coaches, myde self included, like to keep the w r s’ weekends open. We don’t do eA C c i h o any summer basketball on the weekends. That way, if they are in other sports, they can do those on the weekends, or they can have some time to just be kids during the summer.

“I have already gotten some emails from coaches thanking me for having the shootout and that they appreciated what we do. It’s nice to get that feedback.”

The proceeds from the shootout go to the Morris girls basketball program for such purposes as new uniforms or equipment.

“We are going to be getting new uniforms this winter,” Carey said. “The funding for those comes from this shootout.”

After two days and 96 games, the 2015 edition of the Morris Ladies Shootout is in the books.

Annawan was the overall champion, defeating Lincoln-Way East in the title game.

Last year’s champion, Canton, finished third when it beat Lincoln-Way West.

Morris had the best finish among area teams, as one of the two Redskins teams that played finished third in the Gold bracket, beating Minooka in the third-place game.

The other Morris team took eighth in that bracket, falling to Plainfield North in the seventh-place game. Coal City, meanwhille, went 0-3 in pool play, but won two games in the Maroon bracket to earn a spot in the title game against Erie.

All in all, with the exception of Deerfield not showing up, the tournament ran smoothly, according to Morris coach and event coordinator Kate Carey.

“I thought it all went very well,” Carey said. “Aside from the team that didn’t show up, we had one team show up a little late for the first game of the afternoon session Thursday. It was recorded as a forfeit, but they were there soon enough to play, so the two teams got to play each other. The games ran well and everything was right on time.”

As usual, there were plenty of college coaches there to scout the players. Representitives from Augustana College, Kankakee Community College, Lake Forest College, Aurora University, Benedictine University, Dominican University, Loras College, Clarke College, Carthage College, North Park University, Elmhurst College, Millikin University, North Central College, Olivet Nazarene University and University of St. Francis were on hand.

An event that hosts 32-teams doesn’t happen without a lot of sponsors and work behind the scenes. The main sponsor was the city of Morris, while other partners were Casey’s, Turtle’s Tap and Corleone’s.

The key to being successful in the outdoors involves the ability to adapt. Take what nature gives you and change your strategy so you have success. Often, it is a mindset that leads to positive outcomes, but it can be hard to harness.

All of this rain reminded me of three different times I was forced to fish competitively in horrendous floodwater conditions.

First, let me say, never fish a flooded river when it is high and fast. The dangers are real, and disaster can happen in an instant. The three stories I am about to tell you all happened on flood control reservoirs with some current, but not the raging dangers of an out-of-the-banks river. Big difference.

The first time I faced flood conditions was on Truman Lake in central Missouri.

The week of practice brought intense downpours, which

raised the lake level considerably in a few days. The marina staff kept pulling the docks up and farther out of the water every time I launched.

By competition day, the rain had stopped. The lake resembled coffee with creamer. Muddy, cold water is an angler’s nightmare. Right there, I was defeated before I cast a single line. I tried and ran from one place to another. I caught a few little ones, but the winner of the event smashed a giant sack full of fish.

Instead of dreading the floodwater, he cherished it. Talking to him later, I realized that he knew exactly where and how to fish. He focused on bluff banks where the fish could only go up or down and not spread out. His reward? About $20,000.

The next event was on Beaver Lake near Rogers, Arkansas. Same situation.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers Only this time we fished in the downpour for three days.

My bilge pumps never shut off and several times I could barely see my partner in the back of the boat.

Mentally, I was defeated again. The water was so high in this lake I fished around picnic tables, gas grills and swing sets. Crazy. What did I learn from this one? A $200 rain suit is not a rip-off. In fact, it is a worthwhile investment.

Fast-forward several years. I now found myself in the middle of an event on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. I knew the area, like the others, had suffered from major downpours the previous week. The lake was real high.

Rain forced cancellation of racing last Saturday. This week will have the D’Arcy GMC National Midgets leading the way, followed by the STARS Classic Modifieds (Dwarf), Illini Racing Series Sportsman Midgets, CSR Super Cups and Legacy Midwest Racing Series.

The pits will open at 2 p.m. and the front gate at 4:30 p.m.

The first race will begin at 6 p.m.

Admission cost is $12. Children ages 5 to 12 are $2 and children 4 and younger are free.

eral years ago, Mike Foltynewicz graduated from Minooka and became a first-round draft pick of the Houston Astros.

Last offseason, he was a key figure in the trade that brought slugger Evan Gattis to Houston from Atlanta.

Early this season, he was promoted to the parent Braves and made his major league debut.

But as often happens with young pitchers, Foltynewicz ran into a rough patch. He struggled in his past three starts, posting an 8.04 ERA in 15 1 ⁄3 innings. In nine starts overall, he is 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 17 walks.

The Braves decided Wednesday that it was time for Foltynewicz to go back down to Triple-A Gwinnett, where he began the season.

I idled through it. I cringed as my boat plowed through all the trash like a barge.

Eventually, I made it to the other side. My reward? Acres of crystal clear water.

As the floodwaters receded, the feeder rivers and creeks filled the lake back up with normal, clear water. I quickly found several quality spots and anxiously awaited the first day of competition.

I cashed a check and went home a happy angler. My mindset changed from all my bad experiences fishing in flood conditions. Yes, high water is daunting and can ruin a fishing trip.

It can be conquered, however. Just stay off the rivers and be safe.

I also knew fishing bluff banks was out because this reservoir was more of a lowland type with rolling shorelines, very different than the canyon-like appearance of Truman Lake.

I did know, however, the dam operators were pulling water and had been for a couple of days to lower the levels.

I had a plan. In practice, I launched on Smith Mountain Lake and ran up river. Once again, the water resembled doctored up coffee. Many anglers putted around, looked for fish, and in general were frustrated. I kept running up the main river channel that fed the giant impoundment.

After about 20 miles, I came off plane. A mass of debris floated toward me. Trees, garbage, plastic, you name it.

All kinds of disgusting stuff that had been washed off the shorelines now moved en mass down lake toward the dam.

Forte forsees himself in future offense

By PATRICK FINLEY pfinley@suntimes.com Matt Forte knows what people would have said had he not spent the past seven weeks as part of the Bears’ offseason program.

“If I don’t show up (to voluntary organized team activities), everybody’s on me: ‘Oh, you’re selfish. You’re this.

You’re that. Honor your contract,’ ” he said Thursday at Halas Hall.

“But then if, say, I didn’t perform last year and (the Bears) wanted to cut me or cut my pay, they can do that. They can get rid of you. So nobody says nothing to the team about that.

“It’s a hypocritical league.

That’s what it’s about. As a player, all I can do is go out there and perform.”

Forte has one year and a base $7.05 million left on his four-year contract, and wants an extension. After missing the Brian Piccolo Award presentation in April, however, he attended OTAs and the three-day mandatory minicamp, which ended Thursday.

He will be at training camp starting July 29, too, he said.

“We learned that last year,” Forte said. “We definitely didn’t run the ball nearly enough last year, and it hurt, and as evidence, we were 5-11.

“So the running game is going to be really good, to open up the passing game and also to keep us with confidence in the offensive line. We got some big guys up there that know how to block. They want to run the ball.”

He ran 266 times for 1,038 yards last season. His 102 catches – the most ever for

Schwarber briefly boosts lineup

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com CLEVELAND – Kyle Schwarber has done nothing but prove he can hit in big leagues – in a big way – since the Cubs called him up from Class AA for his debut Tuesday.

“We’re a better team with him in our lineup,” catcher David Ross said. “He belongs here.”

“No,” manager Joe Maddon said flatly. “Unless we move to the American League.”

Schwarber, who followed the four-hit game with another multihit game Thursday in the Cubs’ game in Cleveland, can blame himself for his quick return to the minors after Sunday’s final game as a DH. And he knows it. And he almost sounds happy about it.

“Definitely,” he said. “It’s something that I want to do personally, and if it takes more time, it takes more time.”

That “something” is catching – a grueling, intensive position he all but demanded to keep playing after being drafted fourth overall out of Indiana University barely a year ago. The Cubs accepted his challenge – against the projections of a large number of evaluators who believe he’ll never be a major-league caliber catcher – in large part because of a fierce desire and work ethic.

If Schwarber had just quietly accepted, say, left field, he might be spending more than six days in the big leagues on this tour.

Forte has no interest in repeating his receiving record, but prides himself on his multifaceted ability to run, catch and block.

He described Gase’s offense the same way.

“The more versatile you are, the more ways you have to get the ball, the more stress you can put on a defense, the more valuable you are as a player,” he said. “If you can put stress on the defense, that opens up other players, everything.”

His teammates have become comfortable with the scheme and, he said, will keep studying during the 40-day break to avoid wasting time on refreshers in Bourbonnais.

“We just got a lot of leeway to do different things and not be in a system, but in a system that accentuates the player and his best assets,” Forte said. “We’re not going to run a play if someone’s not good at doing something.

“We’re going to run the plays that we’re good at.”

He’ll be practicing that on the field in Bourbonnais, walkyear contract and all.

“I’ll be there,” he said. “It’s just one of those things. Like I said before, there’s nothing I can really do.”

True evangelical left emerges One moment defined oldschool evangelicalism more than any other: The altar-call ritual in which the Rev. Billy Graham urged sinners to come forward and repent, accept God’s forgiveness and be born again.

For decades, crusade choirs sang “Just As I Am,” which proclaims: “Just as I am, and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.”

So evangelical activist Tony Campolo knew he was grabbing heartstrings as he referenced this gospel hymn when announcing that he had changed his beliefs on marriage and homosexuality.

“As a social scientist, I have concluded that sexual orientation is almost never a choice,” said the 80-year-old Campolo, for decades an influential voice on Christian campuses.

“As a Christian, my responsibility is not to condemn or reject gay people, but rather to love and embrace them, and to endeavor to draw them into the fellowship of the church.”

Campolo underlined crucial questions in heated debates linked to the emerging evangelical left: Since the movement called “evangelicalism” lacks a common structure and hierarchy, who decides what the Bible says about repentance and forgiveness?

Who decides when acts cease being sinful and become blessed?

For example, “Just As I Am” has always called sinners to seek forgiveness, stressed Mark Tooley, president of the Institute of Religion and Democracy. Now, Campolo has interpreted it as an “affirmation of the moral status quo” – omitting a call for repentance, since he has evolved on key

Tooley and other critics have noted Campolo’s affirmation that he remains a “staunch evangelical” who salutes the “doctrines of the Apostles’ Creed,” while believing the Bible’s authors were “inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit.” However, Campolo also said, “People of good will can and do read the scriptures very differently when it comes to controversial issues.”

“Whatever he says about the Bible, what Campolo has done is change his stance on the issue that is the flashpoint between faith and culture in our age,” which is whether sex outside of marriage is sin, stressed Tooley, an evangelical in the United Methodist Church.

The surprise was when his decision drew praise from David Neff, who from 1993 to 2012 was editor of Christianity Today, founded in 1956 by Graham and theologian Carl F.H. Henry.

In Facebook statements, Neff first said: “God bless Tony Campolo. He is acting in good faith and is, I think, on the right track.”

Later, he confirmed his doctrinal shift in an exchange with a Christianity Today writer: “I have come to read the relevant passages differently ...and have come along a similar path” as Campolo.

With Charleston, we mourn again So now we mourn.

We mourn for nine men and women killed Wednesday during a prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

We mourn for their husbands and wives, their children and their families, including Charlotte’s Malcolm Graham, a former North Carolina senator whose sister was among the nine victims.

We mourn like we did with Sandy Hook, with Aurora, with too many other killings that tie us together in sorrow.

Now we ask the questions.

Who was Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old who sat among the bowed heads for an hour before deciding the time was

right to kill? Why did he pick these people, this place? And, of course: Where did his gun come from?

We debate such things regularly on these pages.

We write about the easy availability of weapons, even for the mentally unfit, and we lament the unwillingness of lawmakers here and in Washington to do simple things like toughen background checks.

We write about race and the toxic conversations we have about it, and we worry where those conversations lead people.

But we don’t know yet what role either may have played in this shooting.

We don’t know that any tougher law or any better conversation on race would

have stopped it from happening.

We do know that it is entirely and disturbingly possible that the killer was simply someone so consumed by hate or debilitated by mental illness that our boundaries, legal and otherwise, did not apply to his behavior.

So now we pray.

That we will do more to get help to those with mental illness. That we will do less to make it easier for them to kill. That even if these things wouldn’t have prevented this tragedy, that they might stop another.

And now we mourn. For nine people killed. For families that face a cold, concrete path ahead. For ourselves.

Again.

Instead, West should hope that his partner has the diamond ace.

At trick four, West shifts to the diamond deuce. East wins with his ace, but how does he know whether to return a heart (as was required in yesterday’s deal) or a diamond (as is necessary here)?

It is West’s card that gives the answer. The lowest diamond says, “Partner, I have at least one honor in this suit, and I am trying to win tricks in this suit.” So East should lead back his diamond five, and the defenders take five tricks in a row for down one.
